[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68

2012-01-04 Thread Stephen E. Belter
John,

Alan Kung, BA1DU and CEO of CAMSAT was one of the speakers at the Dayton AMSAT
Forum. He reported that HO-68 is suffering from a bad relay or relay driver
that is used to switch from the beacon to the transponder. The likelihood of
recovery is low, but not zero.

Here is the explanation from Alan's slide. These are exact quotes, not my
interpretation:

-- The current situation is the transponders will be difficult to switch the RF
PA from beacon mode to transponder mode

-- The RF relay or its drive circuit is failing, it is a stick relay.
Probability of success of switch is probably a few tenth

-- On the other hand, up to now the both solar and lithium-ion batteries are in
very nice condition

-- The exhibitions of the thermal-control, onboard flight computer and TTC are
also excellent.

Hi all...

I am wondering with the lack of Operational Satellites up at the
moment.what is actually wrong with HO-68...

All I could find out is that it had a scheduling problem, so what does this
mean...its hardware or software...?

With the limited life of these birds I would think they would implement
something to at least get part of it working...if at all possible.

... Is there a webpage that shows the current on/off times for HO68? The

Just to be absolutely clear and accurate, the AMSAT page refers us to the
official page of the project. It is the HO-68 project team's non-updating that
is to be faulted, and by no means AMSAT's.

I mean, if the actual project's site isn't being maintained ... we cannot fault

So, I've been trying to use SO-67 and HO-68 for a few days now, and I
have had no luck.

For equipment, I've been using a Yaesu FT-60R programmed with the
primary frequencies and two secondaries programmed on either side for
Doppler shift. My antenna is an ELK 2m/440cm.

Now, I know SO-67 has been down, but all the passes I've tried have
been after that satellite was supposedly repaired and back on
schedule. Nada. Not even quieting in the receiver.

HO-68 has been a similar bust. I checked the schedule posted from Alan
and highlighted the ones that were supposedly on for FM/PACSAT over NA
and heard nothing. The latest pass I tried was at 17:58 UTC 89 degrees
straight overhead, but still I heard nothing and it was supposed to be
on.

I know my receiver is working, because I checked all my programmed
frequencies, and I have been able to work AO-27 and AO-51 in the past
few days, and I heard the ISS Packet beacon several times as well.

Now that I think of it, I haven't heard SO-50 either.

Any thoughts?

I've had better luck on the weaker sats with my mobile and a short
whip than I have with this ELK antenna. What gives?

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 comments.

2011-01-05 Thread Mike Rupprecht
Hi Domenico,

The approach is excellent, but you forget the first link in the chain.
HO-68 was built and funded all alone by the Chinese. So they can also decide
alone whether and how long they offer a service for other radio amateurs.

Each transponder operates on a schedule will omit any region in the world.
This is quite the same way with satellites which have an low inclination
orbit.

We are not entitled to the transponder but should be happy and grateful that
we can use it regularly. Unfortunately, the reality shows - if it is active
- it is far from optimal use

Once again, I note the whinging about HO-68's orbit not being suitable for
a particular station ... or two.

I'd like to remind the gentlemen concerned that HO-68's on time is NOT
designed to favour one particular area. Please remember, it's a Chinese
satellite and we should abide by and respect their decision of when to
activate the transponder.

For my own use,the HO-68 late afternoon GMT 'on' times are optimum.

Conversly, I 'could' complain about the ISS orbit - (but I don't) -only
'seeing it at max 6 degrees for 90 seconds every 2 days - (read: unworkable
from my QTH), dirro SO-50, AO-27 and VO-52.

What may be poor for one operator could be optimum for another.

Please remember, the world consists of more than The United States Of
America and Southern Europe.

 73 John. la2...@amsat.org

Hi John, LA2QAA

I don't agree with you because there are many and many HO-68 orbits with the
satellite transponder OFF despite the elevation is very hight for South
Europe and North Europe i.e. for you and for me as well for South USA and
North USA

The problem is that in the above orbits HO-68 cannot be very well monitored
by the only one command station in China and they prefere to switch OFF the
transponder.

The pobleme is that the Chinese HO-68 should have more control stations
around the the world instead of only one in China. The roule is that many
control station are needed for a LEO satellites and only two or maximum tree
for a HEO satellite.

Same problem arise with JAMSAT with only one control station in Japan for
FO-29

AMSAT China and AMSAT Japan don't like to share the command of their
satellites with AMSAT's command stations in different continents.

Conversly you should remember that in the early 1974 AMSAT had control
stations for OSCAR-6 in USA ,in North Africa (Algeria) and Australia
so that the satellite was continuously monitored and during all orbits it
was operational.

I abandoned HO-68 for the better and reliable as well in all orbits
available transponder of VO-52

2011-01-04 Thread w4upd
I resent being called a whinger! An observation was given and I
concurred. I have no problem with them doing what they want since it is
their satellite and I think everyone else feels the same. I stated a
fact, and may help others hoping to hear certain areas of the country on
the bird and not understand why they are not hearing them. We have many
other satellites to use and I endeavor to use them when I can.

Same thing happens here in Florida (South East USA) The only passes are
usually low and difficult with omni antennas. As a result we have also
chose not to try and work HO-68 during the lower passes. All of the good
passes, the satellite is not active for our area.

Hi Nader,
thanks for your kind words. Yes, this was our idea. But it's only the first
step.
Henk and me thought also about other solutions (different satellites, fixed
frequencies, SDR etc.)
But you're right - if we can setup a worldwide network of streaming stations
it's possible to listen a satellite around the globe.
I think there are many other ideas and maybe we can collect and share them.

I finally got an opportunity to try and work HO-68 again on the weekend.
Very tough during the week due to work schedule. I had a 65 deg at peak
pass
over FN20un but was unable to hear the satellite at all during the entire
pass. Often I have a high 70cm noise level here so I figured it was
operator
tracking error (Arrow on a tripod) and the high noise level. I went to
http://oscar.dcarr.org to see if anyone had heard the pass and
unfortunately
there were no reports either way. What I did find was a bit confusing
unless
the past work week took a real toll on me...LOL!...

There were 4 reports out of Europe earlier in the day of the satellite
being
heard. When I had checked the schedule on http://www.camsat.cn I thought I
understood the satellite to be off between 1:51 and 14:20 UTC. The pass I
was trying to catch was at 14:39 UTC but the reported heard times were in
the OFF period for HO-68. Am I reading this all wrong? I was hoping to
perhaps catch a European station or two on that pass and also work others
 here in the US.

Thanks in advance and maybe it¹s just a tough morning for me!

Of course there are other websites where to report :-)

Anyway, I found HO68 in the first part of the 19:00utc pass rather weak.
Then it turned strong like always. Lot's of packet radio traffic.
FM repeater worked fine. LA, EA, IK, PA, 9A stations.

Mind the polarization !
For me: I need to change throughout the pass many times.
(Left vs Right HCP). Wrong polarization: noise.

Hope this helps !

Hi Alan, BA1DU

The HO-68 schedule- 13-20 June 2010 is very bad for South
Europe because in the Mediterranean area only two orbits
are useful with an elevation with no more than 45 degrees.

19:05...Turn On and 19:50...Turn Off

17 June 2010
18:50...Turn On and 19:35...Turn Off

All orbits overhead for Europe HO-68 is not scheduled and
the transponder is Turned-Off

2010-06-04 Thread Ron Overdrive
Those settings look correct to me. I made my first sat contact on HO-68
using just a Yaesu VX-7R ht and an Arrow II handheld yagi. So long as you're
homebrew antenna was constructed correctly, you're aiming for a realistic
max elevation (I usually aim for 30 degrees or higher), you're tuning your
downlink to compensate for the Doppler, and the sat is turned On during the
pass you should be able to establish a QSO. My biggest problem with HO-68 is
the scheduling. For me the sat is usually turned off during the good passes
I can use. If I'm lucky I may get 1 good pass with it turned on a week.

Betreff: [amsat-bb] HO-68 Schedule - 14-21 Mar 2010

Hello all,

I got a lot of responses about problem of digital mode
through HO-68. The main problem is that Packet communication
is often interrupted by voice. We are trying a new schedule
in this week, voice and packet operations will be separated
by the schedule, of course, this just depends on the hams'own
discipline. If you have any comment and suggestion, please
let me know.

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 and FO-29 common uplink

2010-02-22 Thread Greg D.

Hmmm... Interesting. That means that we all need to check both satellites
before using either one, to be sure the orbits and modes are compatible, and
avoid the passes that aren't (no matter how tempting). Dual-bird SSB/CW ops
may be confusing, but accidentally running high power FM into FO-29 could be
far worse. That bird is too delicate and precious to abuse.

There was a fair amount of confusion as the two satellites passed each
other over the US tonight. It might be good practice to mention which
satellite you are listening to while calling CQ, etc.

The FM uplink for 68 is outside of the uplink passband for 29, so it
just makes for confusing SSB/CW ops.

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 pass for 2/19 @ 2000 Hawaii

2010-02-19 Thread w6zkh
Hi Robert, and yes, that was me asking if that was you, as just caught the last
of your call before the bird shut off. It had a cutoff time of 2015 utc, so it
hadnt gotten over the top of you yet. The HO-68 crew put in next weeks schedule
for the bird, but it is all Linear SSB/CW modes, no FM. What I have to do here,
is print out my SAT32PC WinAOS printout for 7 days, and then compare their
schedule with what my printout says so I can determine when it will be active..
But at least I did hear you for a second, so maybe next time. The bird as great
footprint, it's just they always turn it off (by software) when it is good for
us here in the West. Also on board today was VA6BMJ, WC7V, N7HYN and myself.
Maybe next time?? 73 de John

Hi Ed,

Were you in SSB or FM mode? I was on the earlier pass (20:00z) today, and at
least for that pass the bird was in SSB/CW mode. Had my first contact on
HO-68, a nice chat with Kerry, WC7V, in Montana. It was quite loud, like S5
when most birds barely move the needle. Really easy to copy. Great job,

 that temp
was 21C . FM and DIGITAL was active normal for 13 mins 23 sec after switch
 on. There after
beacon still on and reported xponder on but silent and temp was now 25 and

Wonder if this was a tempreture output shutdown ?

Mr. Kung,

It is heartbreaking to watch the HO-68 schedule, and see the satellite

seconds before the footprint reaches KH6 land. We are not asking to amend an
existing and

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 Tracking

2010-01-26 Thread Erich Eichmann
Peter,
what is your location (locator, longitude, latitude), what are your entries
for HO-68 in Doppler.SQF and what were the predicted AOS and LOS times for
the pass you mean?

You can check that with the Preview function or the list programs WinAOS or
WinListen.

I never heard that the predictions of NOVA and SatPC32 were different,
provided the data are the same for both programs.

 Greetings to all.

I have 2 satellite prediction programs, NOVA for Windows and of course
 SatPC32. Since the two

do not match in prediction, I tried to find out which one is correct.
 Anyone wonders about the outcome?

Erich, you can relax, your SatPC32 program is superior! But.. Setup:
 IC-706MKII, outside Arrow antenna

mounted on photo tripod at ground level. Computer time adjusted to WWV and
newest Keps loaded via internet. HO-68 orbit 547 was an almost overhead
pass (here in Hawaii). When I finally picked up HO-68's

beacon, the indicated CAT frequency of the SatPC32 program and the
 MANUALLY tuned frequency of the

IC-706MKII did not match, and were far off. By observation, the satellite
 was lagging the prediction program.

When the the CAT window showed a beacon frequency of 435790 KHz I timed
this with a stop watch, and

waited till the radio dial showed the same. The difference was about 7
 minutes! and SatPC32 showed HO-68

almost out of the foot print whilst it should have been overhead at the
 closest distance to me. Something

is absolutely wrong. A 7 minute time difference is not acceptable. Next I
 loaded HO-68's Online Satellite

Pass Predictions from AMSAT NA. Surprise, the AMSAT predictions accurately
 mirror the SatPC32 predictions,

or vice versa. But are wrong! as measured by the actual event. Any help
 out there?

 Hi Pedro, EB4DKA

I have seen that between 24-31 jan we have 12 orbits scheduled for Europe
 on HO-68

By the way actually I got not the time to see on PC the best suitable
 orbits
for both of us in Europe

If you chouse the best convenient orbit for you I will be very happy to
 try
again as we did via FO-29 using your CJU or IO-IO antennas and see the
 difference.

The orbits with high elevations are preferred because those with very low
elevation are full of QRO stations equipped for 2 meters tropo but
 hopefully
 without elevation.

 Waiting for your news.

Anyone know how to load HO-68 qsos to LOTW?  I keep

You may need to e-mail ARRL (lotw @ arrl.org) and ask them

SO-67 is also not on that list.

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 Schedule Jan 17-24

2010-01-15 Thread Bruce Robertson
I've often thought that it would make sense for us as a community to
work toward the following:
1. Predictable mode changes based on simple parameters that extend
forward in time. These would include 'every other week' (as below), or
'all even days', or 'when above 40 deg. N'.
2. Scripting 'hooks' for our tracking programs, whereby the mode of a
satellite could be programmed by a scripting language such as Lua,
Ruby, etc.

Then, as as community we could write the scripts that automate the
selection of modes based on #1 published by the satellite groups, and
we'd have a slightly more automatic process: SatPC32 would, for
instance, not automatically go to AO-27 when in auto mode unless it
were in an operational mode. I recognize that this isn't going to work
well with commissioning or with the testing mode that FO-29 is in
right now, but it's worth a thought.

Hi Alan, BA1DU

The path: South America,NA,North Asia of the above orbit 12 Jan 2010
of HO-68 linear transponder is wrong because the satellite covers instead
Africa and Europe.

This is why a lot of users following your schedule missed a very interesting
orbit with very high elevation over Europe.

I suggest you to remove the path of the satellite over the continents and
live only the time and the mode of operation as follows:

12 Jan. 2010
Linear Tansponder
19:20...Turn On
20:05...Turn Off

Doing this way every one will be obliged to check every orbit and see
if it covers it's foot print or not.

In addition I suggest to schedule HO-68 one week only FM and Digital
Transponder and one week only Linear Transponder.

This will simplify the job for you and for all satellite users giving to
everyone the maximum capability to work every possible orbit in the
preferred mode.

In the mean time and for the future I will not take any more in account
the path of HO-68 that you states over the continents because it is already
two time that I found it to be in mistake.

The last time the following orbit was also in mistake because I found that
it was not covering Europe.

07 Jan. 2010
HO-68 Linear Tansponder
21:45...Turn On
South Africa,Europe,Middle East Asia,NA,North
Pole,North Asia
22:30...Turn Off

Tank you for your cooperation.

Hi Andrew,

Theoretically, yes. Realistically, probably not.

If the server software is available, and be made to run on typical
PC CPUs, the answer is yes. I can't recall if the satellite/server
side of the software is available or not...search around. The client
side software was called PB and PG, so search for those. Also, you can
search for pacsat protocol. There is a *nix version of these out
there, too. I think the source code is posted. But for the satellite
side (server)--not sure.

Different CPUs on different spacecraft, mostly running a custom
spacecraft operating system (SCOS). Google 'bektek' and 'pacsats'
and you can find lots of information about the satellites--old and
new.

For eample:

http://www.amsat.org/amsat/sats/nk6k/msatmain.html

There is CPU and memory information there about the original microsats...

Tons of information out there, really.

2010-01-08 Thread Tim Tuck
Hi Alan,

I have some questions regarding HO-68..

Would it be possible to reschedule HO-68 for Australia and New Zealand
at more appropriate times around the 22:00UTC passes ?

Its currently not operating , in our corner of the world, around the
22:00UTC timeframe, that is morning for us, and it would be nice to be
able to use it during daylight hours. The current times are near 10pm at
night for us or midnight+ for New Zealand !

Also, why does it need a schedule, is there not enough power to operate
24/7 ?

thanks

Tim

2010-01-03 Thread i8cvs
Hi Alan, BA1DU

The schedule HO-68 Jan 04-10 for linear transponder is no good
for South of Europe because the elevation of the satellite is very
low and the acquisition time is too short for Italy

If it is possible I suggest you to make a new schedule for the future
with the HO-68 linear transponder ON all possible orbits for one
week and the HO-68 FM and Digital Transponder ON all possible
orbits for the following week.

I checked all possible orbits of HO-68 linear transponder suitable
for Italy between Jan 04-10 but unfortunately only four orbits are
possible with very low elevation and short time of operation.

In addition I found that the following orbit of your schedule is not
covering Europe.

HO-68 Linear Tansponder
21:45...Turn On
South Africa,Europe,Middle East Asia,NA,North

Hi Mike, when I work satellites from mobile (mode J-V/U) I only compensate
the doppler on the receiver (also a SSB handheld receiver). You can see what
I'm talking about in this video working the FO-29 (similar to the HO-68):

I'm a relative satellite newbie, and hence I don't have a base station set

MHz, as well as an Arrow antenna. With that in mind, does anyone have any
tips for making contacts via the linear transponder on HO-68? Other than
keeping my antenna pointed in the direction of the bird/rotated to avoid
fades, how much do I need to compensate for doppler on the transmit and
receive rigs?If I only tweak the RX rig, is that acceptable? Also,
how much power should I use? Thanks for any advice this list might have!

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 Linear Transponder - Newbie Questions

2009-12-29 Thread George Henry
With your 2-radio setup, you should definitely leave your uplink frequency
fixed, and tune only the downlink. Unless you have full computer control
for doppler, this is the One True Rule anyway: tune only the higher of
the two frequencies, where the doppler shift is greatest (about 9 kHz at
435). (If you ever get on VO-52, note that it has a VHF downlink and a UHF
uplink, so you would tune the uplink there instead.)

Remember that the transponder is INVERTING: you must uplink on LSB, and
listen to the downlink on USB. Also, the higher your downlink frequency is
in the passband, the LOWER your uplink frequency will be. CW is generally
found in the lower half of the passband (435.715 - 435.740) and voice in the
upper half (435.740 - 435.765). Therefore, you should pick a downlink
frequency above .740, and set your uplink radio to the corresponding
frequency (the same amount DOWN from 145.950, the center of the uplink
passband, as your downlink frequency is ABOVE 435.740, ie, an uplink of
145.940 for a downlink of 435.750) Pick a clear frequency, but don't go too
high up, as most voice activity tends to stay pretty close to the center.
For convenience, you might want to make up a little nomograph or chart that
has the downlink frequencies on one line/column, and their corresponding
uplink frequencies on another.

As far as power goes, the general rule has always been that your downlink
should be no stronger than the beacon. That way, you're not tripping the
AGC knocking down someone else's signal. The FCC rule is, the minimum
power necessary. Others have reported that 5 watts to an Arrow is
sufficient.

Transmit either a slow voice count or a string of CW dits or V's while
tuning your receiver around the predicted downlink frequency until you hear
yourself. Early in a pass, while the bird is coming toward you, it'll be
higher, and drift downward as the pass progresses. Call CQ, and listen for
someone coming back. They probably won't be right on your downlink
frequency, as doppler shift will be different at their location than at
yours, so you'll have to tune your downlink to them. Hopefully, they will
tune theirs to match yours. You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Good luck, hope to hear you on the birds!

George, KA3HSW

fades, how much do I need to compensate for doppler on the transmit and
receive rigs?If I only tweak the RX rig, is that acceptable? Also,
how much power should I use? Thanks for any advice this list might have!

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 Schedule Dec27--28

2009-12-27 Thread George Henry
First, thank you to CAMSAT for this wonderful satellite!!!

Alan: would it be possible to schedule the satellite for passes over North
America in FM mode, but with tone access turned off? It would be very
interesting to see if it is easier to access without the tone requirement.

Thank you.

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 145.825 uplink

2009-12-27 Thread Jeff KB2M
Also, the interfering packet(I'm assuming you're talking about packet's
attempting to get digi'd by ISS and PCSAT) won't get acknowledged(or
processed as a packet) by HO-68 as the digi(BBS) callsign is incorrect. So,
these would only effect someone in the immediate area of the offending
unattended station, On the uplink only. On the other hand, I myself would of
chose a different uplink frequency.
I also agree it still looks like an overuse, and PL issue. When the newness
wears off, HO-68 in FM mode will work just fine, except on FD :)

Subject: [amsat-bb] HO-68 145.825 uplink

Yesterday afternoon, Mark, N8MH and myself ran a little experiment on
AO-51. We linked the SQRX receiver, listening on 145.825, to the 435.150
transmitter for several minutes over the eastern US. I wanted to see how
congested the 145.825 uplink was with unattended packet beacons. We
heard about a dozen packets, about two per minute. Most of them were not
very strong.

The implication here is that HO-68 may be impacted by these unattended
beacons while in FM/Packet mode, but not very much. Most users would
have much stronger signals, and the interference is typically very short
in duration. PL issues, and interference between the Voice and Packet
system over densely populated areas is a separate issue.

Six stations, plus myself, accessed Hope-1 (HO-68) on its
first FM pass over Australia starting at 11:00 UTC (27 Dec)

 - VK2ZAZ, VK2TJU, VK2CMP. VK7HRX, VK4ZQ, VK2WEL

Downlink signal at my location reached -98dBm but I did
experience several very deep fades which took the signal
from full quieting to full noise. The fades were very sudden
and lasted from just a few seconds to up to half a minute each
time. Some signal dropouts were experienced.
However, maximum elevation here was just 15 degrees.
Antennas here were RHC for 70cm receive and LHC on 2 mtr TX.

Some distortion in the received audio was evident indicating that the
satellite's receiver might be a little off frequency or that it
 prefers narrow deviation.

Hopefully we will have more opportunities to test the bird further
before it is commissioned for normal use.

An audio recording of the HO-68 pass over the far western
USA 24Dec2009 1807z is on my webserver:

 http://www.papays.com/HO-68_24Dec2009_180656z.mp3

The same scenario continues with packet competing with the voice
repeater. How the two work together is not obvious but it does
seem that the packet shuts down the voice repeater for a period of
time. What makes the voice repeater start up again is not clear.

That's what i suspected at my first try. As soon as a packet signal is
detected the TX shut off to restart with the ACK or command answer.
There is a weird capture effect involved if an analog signal overwhelmed the
digital one the digital retry sequences start until an ACK is
received.

I cannot find any sources to confirm how things behave could be a commanding
station can enlighten us?

 Dear friends,
HO-68 over Europe is a reality, but with some degree of frustation. I
heard the bird at 10 degrees (loc KM17), I called and I made two QSO's
with RZ6MB and Nikolay, UR5BFX, with excellent signals. May be these are
the first QSOs over Europe with the new chinese bird.

sorry we were faster :)
http://www.enduro.idl.pl/audio_sat/first_qso_xw1_18_12_2009_europe.mp3

But when the satellite reached an elevation of 30 degrees, I was not able to
enter the uplink channel. I heard some calls from Nikolay, and a couple of
minutes later I heard HB9OAB calling and calling through the wlole pass, but
I was not able to enter the repeater. I suspect that many station were
trying to enter, but the only station heard was HB9OAB with a strong signal.
Do you have any explanation?
Any way I thank our chinese colleagues for this Chrismas present and I
hope to enjoy the next passes,

I looks like lower sensitivity of the sat receiver or very big troposferic
scatter of transmitted signals in 2m band (?)

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 first QSO over Europe

2009-12-22 Thread ?. ?afet??p?????
Hi Matt and all

Thank you for your reply and correction of my 'arrogant' post.
I do not think that was a problem of tropospheric scatter, since HB9OAB was
heard during the whole pass. May be, as OZ1MY has pointed out, there were
100's of station trying to enter and the receiver could not demodulate any
of them. At low elevation, when in the footprint were only Greece, Italy and
Ucraine, QSOs were made easily and with strong signals.

We look forward for the next passes to understand the problem.

Marry Christmas to all and my best wishes for a happy and fruitful new year.

 Hello,

On the weekend, during one of the XW-1/HO-68 passes schedulle for change
the beacon/TLM only to beacon/TLM + FM repeater mode, It was clear
the temporarily interruption of TLM data flow for their quickly return
from the beggining of the TLM frame with new status, exactly on the time
combined. So CE3RR was well heard in FM downlink.

My neophyte question is: The satellite was over Chile that time. Do we
need an earth ground station in South America, inside the footprint of
the satellite, to send the operational changing command to the bird for
HO-68 real time answer to the request or only the Chinese controler sent
the command, for satellite store the information and, at appropriated
time, far way from Asian footprint, HO-68 active the ordered?
