dictionary for old Catalan, which IIRC, was ported to Apertium format 
from the old InterNOSTRUM format. Does anyone know where I can find it?

[Apertium-stuff] Trouble with apertium-python

I may have sent this message to the wrong list, or twice. Apologies if 
you receive it more than once.


Following up on Adam Bittlingmayer's Telegram message and this comment 
on StackOverflow,

 I tried installing apertium on a python virtual environment:

conda create -m apertium python=3

conda activate apertium

pip install apertium

I wonder why it asked me for root permissions I would expect this to be 
different in a virtual environment (where it would have to install all 
of apertium!). I went on, and then, in a python shell, I executed his 
sequence of commands

apertium.installer.install_module("deu") 
apertium.installer.install_module("eng-deu")|


I was surprised to see that the system asked me again for my root 
password, probably for monolingual or bilingual modules not installed.


Then I ran

|r = apertium.Translator('eng', 'deu') print(r.translate('cats'))|

and sure, the first time it failed, saying something about the module 
not installed, but restarting the shell it worked!


But then it segfaulted and dumped the core on a longer sentence (did not 
with other).

Any idea what may be going on?

(1) why does it need to install apertium things with root privileges 
when ran from a virtual env?


(2) why does it say the module is not installed unless I restart the shell?

[Apertium-stuff] Interested in a PhD on Microdiachronic study of endangered languages?

microdiachronic study of endangered languages (Griko, LSC)*

The LSC Lab (Laboratori de llengua de signes catalana, 
https://www.upf.edu/web/lsc-lab), part of the Formal Linguistics Group 
(GLiF, https://www.upf.edu/web/glif) at Pompeu Fabra University in 
Barcelona, is searching for possible PhD candidates interested in 
joining the project “Microdiachrony in endangered languages across 
modalities (MICRODIAC(H)RO)”, funded by Spanish Ministry of Science and 
Innovation (PID2020-119041GB-I00). The co-PIs are Gemma Barberà and 
Josep Quer.


This project focuses on two endangered languages in different 
modalities: Catalan Sign Language (LSC, Catalonia) and Griko 
(Italiot-Greek variety of Salento, Southern Italy). Change in 
morphosyntactic properties within such languages has received very 
little attention so far. The project attempts at making a novel 
contribution to fill this gap in research from a cross-modal perspective 
on two fronts: (a) exploring how diachronic grammatical change in a 
relatively small time span can be detected, described and accounted for 
(microdiachrony), and (b) creating research resources in the form of two 
corpora of LSC and Griko that include transcribed and annotated data to 
make the study of grammatical change feasible.


We are searching for two interested and motivated candidates that would 
like to carry out their PhD projects in connection with this research 
agenda. The Agency for Management of University and Research Grants of 
the Government of Catalonia (AGAUR) has just opened a call for PhD 
positions (FI 2022), and the interested candidates should apply for such 
a position themselves directly to the funding body (AGAUR), after having 
received endorsement by a Faculty member. The two co-PIs are able to 
endorse one application each and need to select two candidates out of 
those having expressed their interest in such a position (see below).


If the candidates obtain the scholarship, they will become members of 
the above mentioned project, as well as of the LSC Lab and GLiF, where 
they will be hosted. They will also enroll in the PhD program in 
Translation and Language Sciences of Pompeu Fabra University

<https://www.upf.edu/web/phd-tradlangsci>_).


Interested candidates must *first submit their expression of interest* 
to Gemma Barberà (gemma.barb...@upf.edu) and Josep Quer

The candidates are expected to match the following qualifications and 
skills:


 * A Master's degree (or equivalent) with excellent grade records in
   formal linguistics with a strong background in either sign language
   research or in Greek morphosyntax
 * Firm background knowledge in grammar theory and (a) linguistic
   typology, (b) language contact or (c) diachronic grammar
 * Proficiency in either (a) Catalan Sign Language (or another sign
   language) and in English, or (b) in Greek and in English. In the
   latter case, knowledge of Italian will be considered a valuable
   additional asset.
 * Excellent research skills.
 * Excellent academic writing and presentation skills.
 * Excellent communication, social and organizational skills.
 * Experience of working with language consultants and with corpus data.

soc usuari des de fa molts anys dels serveis d'Apertium i n'hi ha
un problema amb el qual he de lidiar diàriament. Quan
tradueixes de castellà a valencià el terme "Universidad de
Alicante" si que obtens "Universitat d'Alacant" però a la inversa
no ho fa, manté "Universitat d'Alacant".

En la meua tasca de traducció de textos i notícies és un mal de
cap constant, perquè la nostra universitat té una denominació
oficial en castellà, i per tindre una correcta traducció de
valencià a castellà he de substituir manualment en quantitat
d'ocasions aquesta denominació. Múltiples aparicions per text,
múltiples textos al dia.

Ho considere una incorrecció, veig que altres universitats del
mateix àmbit com la de València tampoc no es tradueixen. Quina és
la raó d'això? No seria més correcte traduir especialment si hi ha
un nom oficial?

As to contributing to the eng-fra language pair, you would have to

(a) learn how to install Apertium as needed for language pair 
development 
(https://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/Installation#For_those_who_want_to_install_Apertium_locally.2C_and_developers).


(b) learn how dictionary entries look like (a lot can be learn by 
imitating existing entries), make them, and try them locally.


(c) get access to GitHub (and learn to use git, etc.)

(d) submit pull requests with your changes

You can get a lot of guidance from fellow developers at our IRC channel

[Apertium-stuff] Help evaluating bidix entries

Dear Apertiumers:

Shashwat Goel is one of our GSoC students this year. He is working 
(under the mentorship of Jorge Gracia, CCed, and of myself) on software 
that generates bilingual dictionary (bidix) entries for a language pair 
by inferring them from the relations found in other bilingual dictionaries.


His program has a number of hyperparameters that need to be optimized so 
that the output is maximally usable. Currently he generates 
lemma/PoS–lemma/PoS entries (no grammatical info yet, just part of speech).


He has generated random samples from predicted output for a number of 
language pairs. The samples contain 150 bilingual dictionary entries to 
be classified as correct or incorrect (The question is: "would this 
translation be correct (in some context)?"). We would like to have 3 
evaluators per language pair so that we can deal with ties.


The language pairs are en-ca, en-es, eo-en, fr-ca, oc-ca and oc-fr.

We would be really greatful for Apertiumers to contact Shashwat 
(shashwat.g...@research.iiit.ac.in), copying me (m...@ua.es), offering 
half an hour of their time to evaluate 150 entries.

Dear PMC, dear developers:

There has recently been some debate in our list as to whether we should 
augment the information passed along the Apertium pipeline, and how.


We believe the issue is hard to discuss via e-mail threads.

We have decided that it is very convenient to organize a workshop, which 
would comprise two separate two-hour discussions online using a tool 
such as Google Meet. The Universitat d'Alacant has a corporate account; 
Mikel will provide the link(s) later.


These discussions would be primed by short (10-slide, 10-minute) 
presentations by proponents and opponents of changes during the first 
two-hour segment.


The second segment will try to come with one or more clear proposals to

Samuel, thanks for the heads-up.

A replacement for Google Code-In, Apertium Code-In, would be hard to 
organize for an already quite overworked community. No matter how much 
we complained about Melange, Google provided invaluable support to run 
it which would be quite hard to duplicate. And most of the money we have 
left comes from Google Code-In donations (We have quite a lot of money 
which we could spend, BTW, around ~40 k€).


On the other hand, reaching out to young developers so that they join 
our community is absolutely necessary for the survival of Apertium.

Folks:

A quick round of  comments  after the responses by Tino, Xavi, Tanmai, 
and Fran. Did I miss anyone?


(00) I cannot claim to have thoroughly considered all of the details of 
the proposal. Therefore, I can change my mind.


(0) No change should be made without proper regression testing. I think 
we all agree on that!


(1) I still believe that the functionality should be proven without 
rewriting the (critical) format parsing portions in Apertium's modules. 
In particular, finite-state lexical-processing modules written in C++. 
I'd like to hear (for instance) from Sergio first.  There is always the 
possibility of having a complete series of modules that allow for 
"extended" formats, one per current module, so that each pair works with 
what it needs.


(2) Extending *is* changing. The payload associated to each lexical unit 
would be heavier and will be running down the pipe, where it is 
necessary and where it isn't (but see (4)). This does not come without a 
computational burden. It is just a matter of comparing it with the 
burden of working around the current modules. I would not not 
underestimate the speed of Unix utilities, pipes, etc. This is code that 
has been around for 40 years. [1]


(3) I was not suggesting external forking. Branches inside Apertium are 
fine.


(4) I like Tino's idea of a reduced reference payload and a common 
storage which is referred to.


(99) What's the driving force behind avoiding trimming? I confess I 
don't quite get it.

If the new thing works, Apertium could bless the fork and merge it
(depending on how the fork handles provisions for legacy Apertium
workflows). But, as I said, this seems premature to me. But I am
usually very conservative.

I can't imagine why information on case should be added to
every English word (not much that, say, information about
belonging, which is common for Turkic languages). Should this
kind of unnecessary information for everybody, or almost

needed to add the surface form of the word. This seems quite

This doesn't mess with the current stream format too much.
The number of tags is already arbitrary so that helps. The
secondary tags contain a ":" that would help distinguish
them from primary tags.

To implement this a modification would still be needed to
all the parsers but the benefits far outweigh the amount
of work needed to pull this off.

Since this would be a major fundamental change to
Apertium, I request you all to contribute with your views,
any pros, cons, suggestions - to the idea, to the syntax,
anything.

The Project Page shows that more mentors are to be added and if anyone 
is interested in being a mentor alongside with Mikel ? The Last time 
(2018) when this project was in development
Francis(Spectie) was a mentor for the same alongside with Mikel. If 
anyone is interested please let me know so that we can continue with 
the project, and if not, then give me advice on what

 to do in such situations.

run the full election anyway, I'll contest the presidency.

Alternatively, given how the world is shutting down from Covid-19, maybe we
should just postpone the election until things have settled down for
everyone.

Well, if there is exactly the needed number of PMC candidates for having each
of them elected and only one volonteer for president, no problem if the actual
PMCs or the actual president or the election board or both of them decides to
declare the results without running the election, I would not find it stupid.

But using the pretext of the Covid-19 to postpone the election, I find that
very strange.

In different countries of the world, at least in Europe. People are called to
stay at home instead of moving somewhere to work and going back home later
every working day. For some ot them, the reason is just to keep at home children
who don't go to school.

Staying at home, gives free time that we don't have when working.

In France, from next Monday, from mother school to university, pupils and
students will have to stay at home, but in different schools teachers are
called th stay in contact with then, and to use internet to give them some
work.

For persons working in enterprises, when it is possible, they are called to
stay at home and to use a computer with Internet for working.

So, this illness may be an occasion for some people who move each day for
working or studing to stay at home and to go on working or studing (certainly
in a less intensive way) using a computer and Internet.

For a free software developer, using a computer and Internet is nothing new.

Participating to the PMC election, for people who just vote, that will mean
receiving 2 or 3 emails, and sending one email for voting.

That is not a big work and doing that when moving every day to the working
ou studing place or when staying at home will not change a lot.

And as I said earlier, having to stay at home may even give more free time.

If there was hundred of million peoples in the world ill due to covid-19
at the same time (5 % of the world population or more), that would be a
valuable reason to postpone this election. But we are very very far from
it, and in an Apertium PMC election, there are generally only around 30
persons voting.


I will attest that in my case, I have *less* free time in many ways.
Young children home from school adds much more in the way of
distractions and interruptions from work.  The second that any of us
start getting symptoms will make work even harder, of course.

should be known to the PMC; they cannot expect to receive a ballot if

Actually, though, admin access to the manage the apertium-stuff 
mailing list has been lost, iirc, so that might be problematic too.  
We could potentially work something out with sourceforge to regain 
access though?

It is defined in the by-laws!

Article 5. "Committers are developers who have write access to the 
project's source repositories."


Article 4 says: "*A developer that makes sustained, welcomed 
contributions to the project may be invited to become a committer*, 
though the exact timing of such invitations depends on many factors"

Dear all,

(1) According to our by-laws  [http://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/Bylaws], 
article 8, "The Assembly of Committers elects the Project Management 
Committee of Apertium every two years or whenever a vacancy occurs". The 
last election occurred in December 2017. We are therefore late.


(2) According to article 23a, "An Election Board of 3 committers (with 
one substitute each) will run the election.". We need to appoint this 
board, preferrably made up of people who are not running for the 
election. I would appreciate it very much if six committers volunteered 
to run it and one of them led the process.


(3) I announce will not run for president this time (I haven't decided 
about running for a position in the PMC yet). My role in Apertium in the 
last year has been testimonial and I believe it is time for someone else 
who is more active to chair the PMC.


(4) As I am the only one who is able to operate the Apertium account(s), 
one of the first things we would have to do is for the new PMC to open a 
new account to which I would transfer the balance after updating the 
reporting I keep, which is outdated by about 4 months [1].

Hi, Sakine and all.
I have played a bit with ELAN before.
It may be useful if your data have specific tier (was this the name?) 
where you provide an Apertium-style morphological analysis for each 
lexical item. But this would probably be just a (nice) start, as we 
would have to define morphological paradigms so that all forms of each 
word are analysed.
It would help if you could export that part of your ELAN files for 
Apertiumers to see.

use apertium kmr for my data of Kurmanji Kurdish and do POS and
morphological tagging of the data. Will you please help me to upload

I'm sure we would be happy to help you, if we could understand exactly
what you are looking for.

I personally have not used ELAN before, but probably using apertium-apy
it should not be too difficult to integrate the two.

If you could give us more details (e.g. what kind of input you want to 
send, what
kind of transport you want to use and what kind of output you want to 
receive)

probably we would be able to help you better.

Thanks, I think it looks good. I added todonotes package so I usually
write my work-in-progress notes using \todo{} blokcs. My idea is that we

[Apertium-stuff] African languages

Dear Apertiumers:

our research group at the Universitat d'Alacant is currently 
participating in an European project, "GoURMET: Global Under-Resourced 
Media Translation" (http://gourmet-project.eu). Some of the languages 
involved are African languages such as Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Afaan 
Oromoo, Somali, Tigrinya or Amharic.  We would need native speakers to 
assist in the evaluation of corpora and machine translation. So, if you 
are, or you know someone who is, a native speaker of one of these who 
can assist us (we'd have to agree on a possible compensation), please

I am not sure how I can help.

Migrating to another server, updating, and making everything work sounds 
OK to me. I would just have to redirect the DNS when it's ready. I think 
Apertium could pay for this job.


But we need something short term. Students are using apertium.org and 
the apertium web service and they get errors when trying to translate 
with their projects.


Remember that we do have an apertium server hosted by Bytemark.

Please let me know how to proceed at this end.

I can also ask my Department to see if I can make Apertium.org 
accessible from outside.

Thanks for your email! :D

You're right that it isn't pure segmentation. There is some good news
and some bad news.

The good news is that getting the 'pure' segmentation is definitely 
possible

and without too much effort.

Essentially the problem is that the way the
phonological rules are defined, some of them depend on 0 (empty) symbols
on the surface side of the string. The morpheme boundary currently always
goes to empty, so if we set it to not go to empty, then some of those
rules will break.

Fixing that means editting the rules to change the relevant contexts 
to ask for

0 aside from the morpheme boundary on the surface. This shouldn't take
too long.

The bad news is that it isn't done yet, but given the fact that
it Kazakh is in WMT this year, it is definitely something we are planning
to implement. Hopefully in the next couple of days.

Apertium, who improve it massively, and it brings money to our account 
(as mentors usually decide to donate their pay). This money is then 
available to pay for servers, or to send people to conferences to 
present their Apertium work.


But to put together the application we need *mentors* and *ideas.*

The page has also an interesting discussion attached (click on the 
discussion tab).


Those of you who are considering to *mentor* Google Summer of Code 
students this spring/summer, please read the ideas page and:


(1) see if there is an idea that you would like to be a mentor for, or

(2) think of a new idea (complete description, coding challenge,etc.) 
which you would like to mentor and write it up.


And write to us.

I believe any experienced Apertium developer can help.

Ideas without mentors will be removed at application time.

Where is apertium-omegat now (the java one)? My students need it. I will
update the wiki when all three are available.

Why is the Android app deprecated? Are there any plans to provide an
Android offline app? Remember that we have very cool user scenarios (
https://www.google.com/search?client=ubuntu&channel=fs&q=apertium+twb+kurmanji&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8)
for the offline Apertium apps.

It should also be propagated to the Play Store. We have an Android app with
lots of downloads that has stopped working because of searching languages
in the wrong path. This is because SF has made the original path illegal.

page.

This is probably an unexpected consequence of migration but we should
provide a patch until people download new versions.

I have no idea of what needs to be done, but it needs to be done fast. This
is important!

[Apertium-stuff] apertium-spa does not compile

Dear all,

I have just tried to compile one of the language pairs migrated to 
GitHub (by the way, thanks a million everyone who migrated things! Lots 
of hard work!).


Apertium-spa does not compile because someone called a="GVA" added 
entries in error.


Now that we are in GitHub, there is no excuse whatsoever for pushing 
content that does not compile. One can always locally commit and only 
push when things nicely compile.

Versió nova:

La nébuleuse du Crabe (aussi connue comme M1, *NGC 1952, *Taurus À et 
*Taurus X-1) est un restant de supernova résultante de l'explosion 
d'une supernova dans le 1054 (*SN 1054). Située à une distance 
d'environ 6.300 années lumière (1.930 *pc[2]) de la Terre, à la 
constellation de *Taure, la nébuleuse a un radius de six années 
lumière (1,84 *pc) et sa vitesse d'expansion est de 1.500 km/s.


Le centre de la nébuleuse contient un *púlsar, appelé *PSR0531+121, 
qui tourne enveloppe lui-même à trente révolutions par seconde, 
en émettant aussi *polsos de radiation qu'ils vont depuis les rayons 
gamme aux vagues de radio. La découverte de la nébuleuse a été la 
première évidence qu'il indique que les explosions de supernova 
produisent *púlsars.


La nébuleuse est une source de radiation utile pour étudier des corps 
célestes que le dérobent. Pendant les décennies du 1950 et le 1960, la 
couronne solaire a été *cartografiada grâce à l'observation des vagues 
de radio produites par la nébuleuse du Crabe qu'ils passaient à 
travers le Soleil. Plus récemment, l'épaisseur de l'atmosphère du 
satellite de Saturne Titan a été mesurée en remarquant la façon dans 
laquelle bloquait les rayons X/rayons x produits par la nébuleuse.

[Apertium-stuff] GSoC, Apertium, Wikimedia.

Dear Apertiumers,

As I said in my earlier message, I travelled to Olot to attend a 
Wikimedia prehackathon organized by Amical Wikimedia a Catalan 
pro-Wikimedia organization. As you know, Apertium is one of the MT 
systems used in their Content Translation  facility, which is used to 
translate Wikipedia articles.


Discussions there gave rise to two possible projects:

1. Using the database of post-edited machine translations in Content 
Translation. I have revived an old GSoC idea and I have added it to 
http://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/Ideas_for_Google_Summer_of_Code 
("Improving language pairs mining Mediawiki Content Translation 
postedits"). I have also dug out some code I had and created a GitHub 
repository. I would love having feedback and additional mentors for this 
idea.


2. Mediawiki is creating a lexical database called Lexeme: 
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikibaseLexeme . The data there 
is expected to have a CC0 license and will be wiki-edited. This means 
that we would be able to use their data to improve Apertium language 
pairs (which are GPL) (this means that Apertium data could not be 
uploaded to Lexeme unless all authors agreed in releasing it as CC0 
too). People there may be open to patterning Lexeme entries so that they 
contain all the information needed in Apertium. In the horizon, the idea 
of using a wiki way to generate Apertium dictionaries is attractive. Not 
a mature GSoC idea yet, but I would like to see if there would be 
interest, and I would then turn it into a more detailed idea (after 
talking to people in Wikimedia Foundation such as Amir Aharoni and Laura 
Pintscher). There is already a ticket in their web:

[Apertium-stuff] Release often

Dear Apertiumers,

During the last weekend I travelled to Olot to attend a Wikimedia 
prehackathon organized by Amical Wikimedia [1], a Catalan pro-Wikimedia 
organization. As you know, Apertium is one of the MT systems used in 
their Content Translation [2] facility, which is used to translate 
Wikipedia articles.


Wikimedia can only use released language pairs. This is just to remind 
developers how important it is to release as often as possible Apertium 
language-pair data, so that they can use our best possible data in 
Content Translation.


There were other Wikimedia–Apertium connections that were discussed. I 
will write separate email messages regarding them.

The European Association for Machine Translation (hereafter EAMT), on 
behalf of the International Association for Machine Translation 
(hereafter IAMT), invites anyone in the public to submit a tender in 
relation to the provision of the following services for the IAMT.


Description of services: Vendors are required to provide the following 
services:


LOT 1: Conversion of the information currently available

the EAMT to assess this capability, the tenderer should attach a 
declaration providing any information they deem appropriate about their 
qualifications and previous experience in a brief 1-page document 
attached to the letter. Any decision taken by the EAMT about the 
eligibility of a tenderer will be final.


Submission of Tender: Tenderers have to prepare a letter including the 
following information:


 * The name and full contact address of the person responsible for the
   tender.
 * The service lot(s) for which tenders are offered.
 * The date in which the tenderer will be able to start offering the
   service.
 * A technical description (complete but no longer than 2 pages) of how

(T) Translators' track

The use of machine translation by professional translators has an important 
social and economic impact due to the multilinguality of globalized societies. 
They deal with MT output in a wide variety of modalities (inside or outside CAT 
tools, post-editing it and interacting with it in some way or just as 
inspiration, as freelancers or as in-plant personnel, etc) and, quite often,  
the decision to use MT or not, and how to use it, is not taken by them or 
discussed with them in advance.

The machine translation community needs to hear the translators' voice in a 
fresh and unfiltered way, and learn from their insights on issues such as the 
following:

* How do objective measurements of productivity impact the decision of MT 
adoption? How do these affect the translator’s work?
* Which are the psycho-social aspects of MT adoption, how are they influenced 
by translator attitudes and (pre-)conceptions?
* Are there different tasks in postediting which are more acceptable for 
translators than others?
* What are the reasons for some translators' dislike of MT / post-editing?
* Are there particular types of MT errors which influence towards 
acceptance/rejection?
* What is the role of professional translators in MT development? Are they 
really key stakeholders in the MT research agenda?

Abstract submissions (1 page) are invited to report professional translators' 
experiences with MT. We encourage professional translators to speak out freely, 
sincerely and in a proactive way, contributing to the debate with a challenging 
voice.

[Apertium-stuff] Possible GCI idea

Dear Apertiumers:

¿would it make sense to have a web interface in Apertium.org for 
monolingual data? An interface where one would paste text in a language 
and would be processed by the current version of that language in the 
/languages branch. I believe this could be turned into GCI work, maybe 
by breaking it into smaller tasks. The current interface of Apertium.org 
could be leveraged massively.

thanks for your interest in Apertium English–Spanish.
Yes, whenever you add an entry to apertium-en-es.en-es.dix, you have to 
make sure the corresponding monolingual entries are in 
apertium.en-es.en.dix and apertium.en-es.es.dix.
One thing that has to be taken into account is that apertium-en-es is an 
"old-style" langauge pair in that it contains its own monolingual 
dictionaries. Some language pairs are being migrated to "new-style" 
language pairs that contain only bilingual data and depend on 
monolingual packages. They are usually identifiable because they use 
three-letter codes. If you are going to massively add entries to the 
monolingual dictionaries, it might be interesting to see if you could 
also enrich the existing standalone monolingual dictionaries in 
svn://svn.code.sf.net/p/apertium/svn/languages .
I am not so knowledgeable about adding supplementary files. I will let 
someone else in the list reply.
As regards becoming a committer, I am forwarding your request to the

Hello all,

I have noticed that there is a Romanian-Catalan pair in the
nursery that has not been updated for some time. From what I have
guessed from SVN history, it was based on the released
Romanian-Spanish pair and probably took advantage of crossdics.
While the pair has around 100 rules, it only works from Romanian
to Catalan, there are no rules for the other direction, and it is
full of generation errors. It is also self-contained, it does not
make use of standalone language modules.

Even though I am currently working on English-Catalan to release
an update as soon as possible, I think it would be great to work
on this pair to bring it up to date. Given that Romanian and
Catalan are both Romance languages with lots of similarities, that
there is a good amount of documentation about Romanian in the
Apertium wiki (even transfer rules) and that I have studied
Romanian and can speak it to a certain extent, it should not be a
difficult task and we could get a very decent language pair.

This is a basic idea with no further planning, and depending on my
spare time it may not become real until next year's GSoC, but it
would be great to hear about your thoughts or even meet someone
interested or who took part in the development of the
Romanian-Spanish pair.

Public Tender Invitation

October 31, 2017

The European Association for Machine Translation (hereafter EAMT), on 
behalf of the International Association for Machine Translation 
(hereafter IAMT), invites anyone in the public to submit a tender in 
relation to the provision of the following services for the IAMT.


Description of services: Vendors are required to provide the following 
services:


LOT 1: Conversion of the information currently available 
inwww.mt-archive.info

a database format allowing easy maintenance of the information, and 
setting up of a new server offering at least the same functionality as

the public through that database. Please refer to Appendix 1 for

LOT 2: Annual maintenance of the new MT Archive server, including 
hosting and name services. Please refer to Appendix 2 for detailed 
specifications.


Tenders for LOT2 are subject to submission of a tender for LOT1.

Validity: The tender shall be valid for at least 6 months from the date 
of the tender.


Eligibility Requirements: Any individual or company capable to provide 
the above services is eligible for consideration of their tender. For 
the EAMT to assess this capability, the tenderer should attach a 
declaration providing any information they deem appropriate about their 
qualifications and previous experience in a brief 1-page document 
attached to the letter. Any decision taken by the EAMT about the 
eligibility of a tenderer will be final.


Submission of Tender: Tenderers have to prepare a letter including the 
following information:


 * The name and full contact address of the person responsible for the
   tender.
 * The service lot(s) for which tenders are offered.
 * The date in which the tenderer will be able to start offering the
   service.
 * A technical description (complete but no longer than 2 pages) of how
   each service lot tendered for will be implemented.
 * The total price in US$ for each lot.
 * A 1-page declaration of capability as described above.

These documents should be submitted as scanned, signed, PDF documents in 
an e-mail message to EAMT Secretary Lucia Specia

source of papers about machine translation, with emphasis on historical 
MT papers.


The tenderer is requested to offer the followingservices:

2. Mirroring, parsing and ingesting the largest possible fraction of

[Apertium-stuff] Election of a new Apertium Project Management Committee

Dear Apertiumers:

the current Project Management Committee has been in office longer than 
two years. According to our by-laws [1], an election should have been 
called long ago. An election is long due.


We need three volunteers for an Election Board to run the election. They 
have to be Apertium committers that are not intending to run for a 
position in the project management committee. They will have the support 
of the current Project Management Committee in all matters related to 
running the election (see article 23 of the by-laws), and I am sure they 
will also have the support of past Election Boards.


The first thing is to put together a census. This is done by contacting 
all Apertium committers (in SourceForge) and asking them if they want to 
be part of it. The activity corresponding to previous elections is here:

Please reply to the list or either just come back to me as soon as 
possible, ideally before 23.59 UTC tomorrow Wednesday the 18th.
