[arr] KM Music Conservatory

2008-01-11 Thread Vithur
AR Rahman to set up music conservatory
--
By Businessofcinema.com Team
   8 January 2008, 07:53 PM

MUMBAI: Music director AR Rahman is planning to set up a state-of-the-art
music conservatory called KM Music Conservatory in Chennai to create a
'world-class orchestra' that could score music for Indian composers and to
train students in vocal as well as instrumental music.

Announcing the KM Music Conservatory and KM Music Symphony Orchestra
Synthesizers, Rahman said, Electronic sounds played a significant role in
the evolution of music in the 80s and 90s. As this fresh sound captivated
listeners, they began to lose appreciation and interest in live classical
compositions. Should this continue, future generations will be deprived of
the joy that is live classical music.

The KM Music Conservatory is an attempt to recreate a world-class orchestra
for the enjoyment of India's people. Currently, Indian composers have to go
abroad to find orchestras to record. KM Music Conservatory aims to eliminate
this obstacle and provide orchestra in India.

I feel, as a modern classical musician, having the knowledge of both music
performance and music technology is invaluable. Only having the skill to
perform an instrument may not necessarily be lucrative, however having that
skill as well as excellent music production capabilities will ensure many
more career opportunities and financial security. That way they learn to use
the best of both worlds, added Rahman.

The KM Music Conservatory and Audio Media Education, India 's first Apple
authorized training centre located in Chennai, will be offering a program in
music and music technology. The conservatory faculty will include Indian and
international professors and musicians who will educate students in Indian
and western classical music.

The school will currently be auditioning and accepting singers and students
who play flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone, violin,
viola, cello, double bass, and percussion. Courses will include western
vocal and instrumental performance, Indian classical vocal, western and
Indian music theory, music appreciation, ear training, piano, audio
engineering, an Apple certified course in Logic Pro, and a Digidesign
certified course in Pro Tools.

Scholarships will be offered to deserving students from the A R Rahman
Foundation. Students can also audition for the professional KM Music
Symphony Orchestra upon completion of the program.

Good music should have no language barriers and that's exactly what
Rahman (always) does. These songs are so beautiful that I feel the need
to learn hindi to grasp full bliss although I must stress that even
though I don't understand the lyrics, the song is soul stirring. Simply
 amazing.

P.S: I was a bit surprised when a member (Chord, I think) thought that
Taare Zameen Par was better than some recent Rahman compositions.
Probably because he understands hindi perhaps? I felt the TZP songs are
appealing mainly due to the emotions brought about by the lyrics (of
course along with the music but the lyrics play a large(r) role). I
heard Maa and couldn't understand why ppl were raving about the song
and then checked out the lyrics and I could appreciate the song after
that. With Rahman, I don't need to understand the lyrics because the
music brings the emotions;the full package. I didn't understand a word
of Yeh Jo Desh when I heard it first but remember how I felt. It was
soul stirring. Didn't have to know what the lyrics meant to appreciate
the songs. That's why Rahman rocks for me!

[arr] Singer Dr. Narayanan experiences with ARR

2008-01-11 Thread Vithur
Dear Rahmaniacs, ( ALL WOULD DERIVE MORE JOY, WHEN LISTENING TO MP3s, which
will be circulated soon )

Today was a wonderful interview of Dr. Narayan with Raihana in Rahmania show
( AahaFM 91.9 ) .

*Brief Introduction :-* Dr. Narayan is an upcoming singer , who has been
singing hummings for ARR, and a practising Homeopathy Doctor. he is a BHMS;
Bachelor of Homepathy Surgery, just like allopathy medicine . Proper
College for 5 1/2 yrs. Practising along with his wife. She also sings, but
more a critic. Learnt Carnatic Music from his mother right from the age of 5
. At a point he got Central Govt Scholarship in Vocal . he started learning
for 14 or 15 yrs under the tutelage of Prof. S. Rajam , a close associate of
Veena Balachander. He is an expert member in Music Commitee. It was he who
made my voice suitable for Carnatic as well as Film Songs. He made me have a
thorough practice in all raagas, which enabled me to acquire Swara knowledge
. My first Arangetram was in front of Dr. Balamuralikrishna in 1997 , in
Narada Gana Sabha .

*ARR s Meeting :-* My first meeting was for the film Kandukonden
Kandukonden. 1999. he went and gave devotional cassettes that he had
recorded to ARR. Immediately, he got a call from ARR 's studio. He went and
listened to the flute piece of the song Kandukondein Kandukondein. I started
practising the swaras,a nd next day, mr. Rajeev Menon took him to ARR
studios . The cassette was first given to ARR. That was given at a common
place, where he gave it to ARR. when he got the call from ARR studio, he was
having butterflies in his stomach, and was with so much of anxiety, because
it was the first time he was entering ARR Studio.

ARR was present and he was smiling. He summoned Dr. to sing . ARR gave many
improvisations.Dr.'s piece was considered to be a track. . ARR spontaneously
gave note phrases. Before the song , ARR asked him What is the Alapana for
Raaga Nalinaganti? ( unexpectadly ) . he gave the answer. Then ARR was
asking his name, for which he replied I am Sriram Narayanan. But ARR
always used to call him as Doctor. ARR always used to sing the song hello
Doctor; Heart Touch aache ( Kadhal Desam song with wordings changed
specially for Dr. Narayan )

Now also, recently, during their trip to San Francisco, both stayed in the
same hotel. whenever ARR meets Dr., he used to sing Hello Doctor.. How do
you do Doctor. Raihana says that ARR used to love Dr. so much, that he has
never cut jokes with anybody else other than Dr. Its because of Dr. 's
innocence. At times of chorus also, ARR used to talk so much about Dr.
Suddenly, between recordings, ARR used to ask Where is Dr ?. where is Dr
?. Dr. needs to ake homeopathy pills. When anybody used to feel sick, ARR
used to ask Where is our fake Doctor .

*SINGAPORE TRIP :-*
while in the flight, Air Hostess was calling for any doctors, and for the
first time, in the presence of ARR, Dr. went and attended the patient. The
patient had some mild indigestion problem. So he advised some first aid.

Medicines for maintaining Voice :- No medicines. There are very good
medicines for maintaining voice in Homeopathy. Many singers used to take
medicines from him.

*FIRST SONG WITH ARR :-* Suthi Suthi Vandeega ( Humming Version in Re-
recording ) .
In Pukar, Solo bit - Kismat Se Tum . dr. did it in Humming version.

Raihana says Dr. is very helpful, down to earth, and he tells the swaras for
Mustafa song ( then and there ) .

BOYS re- recording :- Manam Virubuthe bit ( when hero heroine go to a
resort, and its like their mind sings )

on the spot, ARR composed the song while doing re- recording. After some
takes, immediate voice mixing was done by ARR. The end result was very
husky, excellent. ( he sings the same song as Madurai Somu , some imitations
etc )

K. Balachander introduced Dr. in the Tv serial Sahana, which was a great
hit, and also a film Poi. Also in ennavale, Palli koodam etc . In telugu,
Dasari Narayan Rao introduced him. Also some albums , which are yet to be
released.

*Most Favoutite Song of Dr. :-* Kadhal Ennum Thervezhii - KADHALAR DHINAM ,
Ennavalle ( Kadhalan )

*During Concerts :-* TAAL Song . There is a Jadi originally sung by
Sukhwinder Singh. ARR used to ask Dr. to sing that jadi. ( it comes in
between in Taal se Taal mila song )

Listened to a lot of Hindustani songs etc . Dr. can improvise on any song.
Dr. can finish a song within 40 minutes. Dr. immediately, writes notes for
his songs. and then he starts singing .

*FAVOURITE RAAGA :-* When they went to Australia, the song ' Sandhana
Thendralai ( KK ) . He noticed a spark, a magic. There is a flute bit in
between after the first stanza. That is in keeravani raaga . A beautiful mix
. Real music. So much of soul and energy in this music. Even Incurable
diseases can be cured listening to this . This flute bit has thearauptc use.
Any tune that is melodiuous has the ability to cure . Raihana 's depression
was elevated by Chinna Chinna Aasai ( Roja ) . All ARR

I agree Gomzy, that there was a lot of innocence in the tracks but
they were fairly simple compositions. Little or no layers to the
music and I don't want to take anything away from SEL for that
because that was probably what Aamir asked them for - simple innocent
music. I think the simplicity of the tunes and the storyline along
with the lyrics apealed to ppl's emotions. In contrast to Rahman's
music where the music does 90% of the soul stirring (it certainly
does for me at least). If SEL used the same tunes in a different
movie with a different story line etc, I don't think it would have
made an impact. I don't want to make this a bash-Taare-Zameen-Par
thread cos it's not a bad soundtrack at all but I was only trying to
give my personal opinion on the difference between Rahman's music and
everyone else's. The music talks for itself. He could reuse all his
tunes in a completely different movie (and in a different context)
and people will still fall in love with them just like they were
hearing it for the first time.

class. I think a few would disagree with this. K.S.Ravikumar and ARR
combination rarely let us down. So I hope to hear the news from ARR camp
itself.Gopal maybe can verify this news...

[ARR] Jodha Akbar : A Tale of love and war

2008-01-11 Thread Gomzy
(Video also)

http://timesnow.tv/Newsdtls.aspx?NewsID=5366

Ashutosh Gowariker's much-awaited 'Jodha Akbar' is a film, which has been
making everyone drool over exotic visuals and the sizzling starcast. The
magnum opus is all set to be released in January-end.

The film is all set to showcase Ash-Hrithik pair amidst the magnificent sets
depicting a sixteenth century tale of true love and war. The Ash Hrithik
chemistry is still clearly alive with both the actors looking like picture
perfect pieces of history. The duo were earlier seen in 'Dhoom 2'. However,
it will be interesting to see their chemistry in the movie. Interestingly,
'Jodha Akbar' is Ash's first film after marriage.

The trailers of the film have already caught the imagination of the
audience, which showcases the sheer magnificence and the authenticity of the
sets. Director of the movie -- Ashutosh Gowariker -- has clearly loosened
his purse strings to ensure that every detail on the sets was as authentic
as it gets. 'Jodha Akbar' is Gowariker's most expensive production till
date. The moot question is will 'Jodha Akbar' manage to enthrall the
audience, if the sneak peeks are anything to go by, all we can say is a
resounding yes.

[arr] Translations of Jodha Akbar songs please

2008-01-11 Thread mayahgr
Could someone who's heard the full version of Jashn-e-Bahaara please
provide us with a translation of the song. It's magical and so is In
Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein (from the little I've heard). Btw, what does
this mean ? (ie Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein)

You guys got to be kidding..

I am one of the biggest fans of ARR..
but Bharata Ratna ?. He is not there yet.
I am sure he would agree.

Lata Mangeshkar, Bismillah Khan, Ravi Shankar, and M.S.Subbulakshmi
are the only Bharata Ratnas from the music field.

Of course there are a lot of non-sensical political awardees..

But I think it's way too early for ARR.
Padma Bhushan.. ? yes, I would vote for that.

[arr] Canada news reports on ARR's music school

2008-01-11 Thread Thulasi Ram
Indian composer A.R. Rahman opens music school
http://www.cbc.ca/arts/music/story/2008/01/08/rahman-music-school.html

Well-known Indian composer A.R. Rahman has opened a school to train
promising musicians in the southern Indian city of Chennai, a newspaper
reported Tuesday.

Rahman said he felt the need for a school to teach talented musicians
production and technology skills.

[image: A.R. Rahman, here attending the opening night after party for
Broadway's version of Bombay Dreams in 2004, is one of India's best known
composers.]*A.R. Rahman, here attending the opening night after party for
Broadway's version of Bombay Dreams in 2004, is one of India's best known
composers.*
*(Evan Agostini/Getty) *

I have finally opened my music conservatory, he told the Mumbai Mirror
newspaper. In the coming months we will have students and singers training
in performances and production.

One of India's leading composers, Rahman produced the music for the stage
musical version of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy *The Lord of the Rings*, which
premiered in Toronto, for Andrew Lloyd Webber's *Bombay Dreams* and songs
for more than 120 movies, including Canadian director Deepa Mehta's
elements trilogy: *Fire*, *Earth* and *Water*.

Having the knowledge of both music performances and music technology is
invaluable, Rahman was quoted as saying. The skill to perform
an instrument combined with production capabilities will ensure many more
career opportunities.

He said he also hopes the school will nurture gifted musicians who could be
part of an orchestra that he dreams of starting.

Indian composers usually travel abroad to record with orchestras. My vision
is to provide an orchestra in India, Rahman said.

Kailasa has been a wondrous blend of Sufi and folk music with a contemporary
twist to it since its inception in 2006 and Kailash Kher has been the face of
it. But now the long-maned, beads-wearing, guitar-strumming trio are all set to
go the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy way, calling themselves Kailash-Paresh-Naresh as they
enter Bollywood.
“We have composed music for two films and their sounds are different from the
Kailasa sound,” says Kher. While one of the films is Chandni Chowk to China,
directed by Nikhil Advani and starring Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone, the
other is Allah Ke Bande directed by Farooque Kabir. “We are doing a track in
each film and both are in the anthem format,” says Kher. While the track in
Chandni Chowk... is power-packed, AR Rahman will sing the title track of Allah
Ke Bande “which is like a prayer to God”. But their music doesn’t stop there.
Kailasa are working on their third album that will be released in mid-2008.
“This album is going to be intense and will have a strong ballad feel to it
with a high emotional quotient,” says Kher, who, in all probability, will be
singing with rock group Pearl Jam’s singer Eddie Vedder by the end of the year
in a concert that will be a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Vedder had
collaborated with Khan for a track in Dead Man Walking.
Amid the busy tour schedules and recordings, Kher has taken up social causes
as well. As a participant in the reality show Mission Ustaad, Kher is singing
about UN’s Millennium Development Goals. “I don’t want my music to cater to
entertainment alone but also create awareness among people,” says Kher, who,
along with the other participants, composed songs on 11 issues, including human
trafficking and poverty. The compilation will be released in April.

What can bring you peace? His many songs...

ARR is not a warrior, he is quite certainly a God. He is a simple man.
But history has proved that many simple man have done great deeds. Not for
themselves, but for the benefit of others...
ARR, likewise, has been amongst the 1st to come forward in support of various
causes...
'Taj Anthem' in more than 8 languages
'Tsunami' song... listen to it u can feel the pain suffering..
'Banyan Theme' giving hope to those who have lost it..
and above all

Vande Mataram... many generations will come go... but this album with stay
FOREVER.

u don't have to sacrifice ur life, and prove that u deserve a Bharat Ratna.

I believe every soul that can bring peace to one's heart... deserves
recognition... be that in any form.

ARR is not the GOD of MUSIC... MUSIC is a GOD for ARR.

BharataRatna is the highest honour and it really

Meanwhile let ARR start with couple of Oscars, Grammies and

[arr] ARR Reference on SaReGaMa Lil Champs - Mayya Mayya

2008-01-11 Thread Chord
Just saw the latest episode of SaReGaMa Lil Champs and the theme of
this episode was around Arabic and Arabic sounding songs. A girl named
Anamika sang the song Mayya Mayya from Guru and I was totally blown
away by her renditon of the song. Totally flawless and with easeto
me as good or if not better than the original. Both Sonu Nigam and
Suresh Wadkar as judges gave a standing ovation. Sailm-Suleiman,
guests for this show mentioned that Rahman would have been very proud
and impressed if he heard her sing this song. She was really amazing
in her singing.

Recommend someone please pass the message to Rahman to watch this
episode, esp. this song.

Good one!

[arr] Re: AR Rahman will sing for Kailash Kher ! WHY NOT ?

2008-01-11 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
I find that some Rahmaniacs have voiced concern over Rahman singing
Kailash Kher's song or for Kailash Kher, or something like that. I
think, as a musician and singer, Rahman would be happy to explore his
talent outside his own sphere of creation. There are numerous
instances where two artists collaborate on a song or album and it is
always has a unknown feeling about such joint efforts. And if
Kailash Kher can sing for Rahman, then Rahman singing for Kailash
Kher should be equally welcomed.

Those who have seen Mission Ustaad, can remember the words Rahman has
used on the skills and the earthy flavour of Kailash Kher's singing.
I think, they both admire each other a lot.

Dear ARR, Go for it !

What a function. It is null and void without ARR. Dir Shankar quoted on ARR
saying I am very pleased and happy to work like Big Shaktis like ARR (
meaning Powerful energies ) .

A.R.Rahman , the name itself shows how powerful it is. Well i am not talking
about his name, but about his contribution to the Indian music industry.
A.R.Rahman, the man who changed the whole concept of music in Indian cinema
.The reformer of the Indian music. The man whose first album itself was a huge
success . He was the first Indian music composer to work in any Hollywood
movie. His album such as Bombay Dreams had topped the charts in UK and ofcourse
who can forget Vandemataram, WOHE and many others. The man who after serving
the music industry for almost 15 years is still the number 1. The man who won
National Awards 4 times,19 times Filmfare Awards,9 times Cine Awards,7 times
IIFA Awards,7 times Screen Awards and many other awards. He was given
Padmashree in 2000 . I think its high time for him to be given BHARAT RATNA .
Your thoughts on this .
