[arr] Ghajini was a difficult album to write: Prasoon Joshi

2008-12-10 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Ghajini was a difficult album to write: Prasoon Joshi

Ace lyricist Prasoon Joshi is the man behind the soulful romantic lyrics of
Guzarish from Ghajini. He talks about Ghajini, working with legends like Aamir
and Rahman and the recent terror attacks in Bombay.

Tell us something about Ghajini's music.

All the songs are different from each other. Every single song is very good and
close to my heart. There is a love song, a fight song, a sad song and a fun
song. I guess Rahman has done a wonderful job again. It's completely different
from our previous projects like Rang De Basanti and it was rather hard to make
also.

Ghajini is a remake of a South Indian film, does the music also sound like the
music of that film?

No, not at all! The music is totally different from the original film and has
nothing to do with it.

Which is your favorite Ghajini song?

'Behka' is my favorite because none of the lyricists whom Rahman had approached
were ready to write the song. It was quite difficult to write it so it is close
to my heart.

You have been in Aamir Khan's camp since a long time. So do you choose the
projects because of Aamir or do you read the scripts?

To a certain extent, it is because of Aamir and it is a mix of both
professionalism and friendship. He is a perfectionist and chooses good movies
and good scripts so we have a lot of faith in him.

How was it working with A.R.Rahman? What have you learnt from him?

Rahman is a chilled out friend. We have worked in many films together. Now the
dosti has become so strong that sometimes I write the lyrics first and he
composes a tune after that or he composes a tune and I fit in the lyrics. We
cannot meet daily but we share a great rapport and mutual understanding. I feel
at home while working with Rahman.

You have written a beautiful poem called Iss Baar Nahin on the Mumbai blasts.
Where were you and what was going through your mind at the time the blasts took
place?

I was in Chennai when the blasts happened. When I saw it first, I thought some
gang-wars were taking place. But later on we came to know that it was a terror
attack. On the very next day I took a flight back to Mumbai and was deeply
saddened by what was happening. Some people come inside our country and damage
our historical monument and kill our people. I mean the security was so bad.

Do you think the media should boycott Pakistani artists now?

No, why should we punish non-criminals? What have they done? Terror attacks
have happened in Pakistan also and people have died there too. It is not
Pakistani civilians who killed our Indians. It's the terrorist who did it. We
should tighten our security, that's it. We need some strict laws against
terrorists.

[arr] Oscar songs long list coming soon

2008-12-10 Thread Vinod Raju
2008 Oscars long list for "Original Song" category will be out
anytime.

"Jai Ho" is sure to be in the list. Will any other ARR song figure in
the list? I would love to see "Dreams on Fire" and "Oh Saya" too on
the list.

PS: For the uninitiated, Oscar long list for songs is officially
published in the second week of Dec, which will have 50+ songs.
ARR had 3 songs in the long list for 2006 ("Chan Chan" from Water,
"Khalbali" and "Luka Chuppi" from Rang de Basanti).

Re: [arr] Re: ARR first indian composer at oscars 2009

2008-12-10 Thread Aakarsh
Thats true..and for that matter..even SDM would not be considered as Indian
Entry...because it was not produced by any production house in India.

Regarding ARR being the first composer...it is false...because Pt.Ravi Shankar
was once nominated (for Gandhi) and if i am not wrong, another classical
musician (could be Ustad Ali Akbar Khan or Ustad Vilayat Khan) was also
nominated for some film made in 60s. I am not sure though.

One addition,

Vidhu Vinod Chopra was nominated in 1979 in the Documentary Short Subject
category for 'An Encounter with Faces'

Also, technically, Water is not an Indian film. It was produced by a Canadian
company and was Canada's official entry to the Oscars.

[arr] Getting in tune with Oscar

Todd Martens
December 11, 2008

Easy pickings ... three songs from Enchanted were nominated in the
2008 Academy Awards.

FINDING music worthy of an original song nomination
wasn't much of a challenge in the past two years. As evidence, three
selections from Enchanted were nominated in 2008 and three from
Dreamgirls in 2007. But in June, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences altered the rules, allowing only two songs per film to
be nominated, thereby ensuring that voters will have to dig - at
least a little. And that might be harder than it sounds. This year
hasn't produced an Eddie Vedder-penned soundtrack (Into The Wild) or
a bevy of light pop tunes from singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche (Dan
In Real Life). That's not to say some front-runners haven't emerged.
Here is a look at some of 2008's notable film songs.

THE FAVOURITE

Bruce Springsteen's The Wrestler. Already a critical sensation in the
US (it opens in Australia on January 15), Darren Aronofsky's The
Wrestler scored, perhaps, the ultimate music coup. There is no
doubting Springsteen's appeal to academy voters - he won for Streets
Of Philadelphia in 1993. With The Wrestler, Springsteen contrasts
plaintive guitar strumming with prideful, street-tough lyrics. It's
full of simple but evocative imagery - one-legged dogs and broken
bones illustrate the survival tale.

THE POP STAR

Mariah Carey's Right To Dream. In need of a guitarist for Right To
Dream, Carey aimed high, going straight to country legend Willie
Nelson. Written for Tennessee, in which Carey plays an aspiring
singer, Right To Dream is restrained elegance, with some light,
finger-picked guitar flourishes and a dash of late-night soul. "I was
humming different melodies while I was on the set and stuff," Carey
says. "I was just thinking that Willie Nelson would be somebody
fabulous to collaborate with. I reached out to him, and we met after
one of his concerts."

THE ONE WITH BUZZ

M.I.A. and A. R. Rahman's O … Saya. Early in Danny Boyle's Slumdog
Millionaire (opening on Boxing Day), O … Saya sets the tone, its
kinetic rhythms giving way to a more traditional Eastern chant - a
chant that soon becomes digitally enhanced. Random urban noises
become part of the music, and electronic effects skitter around the
beats. When the vocals from M.I.A. arrive, she sings soft and fast -
the sound of someone on the run, but not wanting to attract too much
attention. "A.R. was the most amazing producer," M.I.A. says of the
collaboration. "He works with 100-people orchestras, and his sound is
huge. Then on the other end of the room was me, making music on [a
laptop], just playing Danny really gritty, badly recorded MP3s."

THE CROWD PLEASER

Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman's Down To Earth. The spacey sound
effects of this Wall-E cut were lifted directly from Newman's score.
That was director Andrew Stanton's directive, Newman says. "Andrew
was interested in having me bring some of the music I had used in the
movie to Peter, so it wouldn't appear to just be a left turn," he
says. But the futuristic sheen that underlies the cut received a
wallop of warmth from Gabriel's vocals, as well as the grand, gospel
finale, courtesy of South Africa's Soweto Gospel Choir. It's largely
a pair of keyboards that comprise the instrumentals, but the textures
are deep enough for an orchestra. It's all a bit out of this world.

[arr] My Wish

2008-12-10 Thread bipin shenoy
Hi All,

I was on my way to office by the MRTS train in chennai. Was listening
to Ringa Ringa for the 5 time of the day (at 7 am). I wonder why do we
get hooked on to certain songs that we keep on humming them again and
again. Why is that it is always an arr song for me? At times I wonder
if I am being biased in listening to only arr songs. But I dont want to
change myself. Arr's music creates magic within me as it does for many
of you. I wonder why hasnt he become the most popular musician yet (I
want every human to know him... :)). I want him to win the Bharat Ratna
somewhere down the career. This morning I felt may be slumdog
millionaire can start things off not that he has done a very good job.
But because this movie has released outside India and is catering to a
foreign audience and with the buzz of a Oscar like never before. I am
keeping my fingers crossed. I pray this magician  gets what he deserves
and what we all rejoice in our man's achievements.

Thanks,

Bipin

P.S: I will surely buy an original audio cd of SDM once it releases in
chennai. Just that I couldnt wait till then to listen to the songs.

[arr] Best Instrumental Song of the Year 2008

2008-12-10 Thread rivjot
Since we didnt have theme music this year, chose your fav instrumental
songs of the year -

1. Jashan-E-Bahaara (flute) - JA
2. Khwaja Mere Khwaja (oboe) - JA
3. Meharbaan (guitar) - Ada
4. Kaise Mujhe (guitar & flute) - Ghajini

I didnt mention slumdog in there since it more of background piece.
connection probably has few instrumental pieces as well, but that is
different genre (talking about hindi OSTs here only)

anyways, my pick has to Khwaja Mere Khwaja instrumental..

[arr] Lagaan & Slumdog

2008-12-10 Thread Vithur
The first Bollywood movie I ever saw was Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in
India.
After seeing that movie I fell in love with Indian film and popular music.
 But Lagaan's soundtrack, by A.R.
Rahmanis still my favorite.
Last week his new movie Slumdog
Millionaire (from the director who brought us Trainspotting and 28 Days
Later) was released in the United States, the soundtrack also features
M.I.A.'s Grammy 2009 nominated single "Paper Planes."
TIME magazine declared Rahman the "Mozart of Madras" and he is among the 25
highest selling music artist of all
time.
He has composed over one hundred film scores in the last 25 years and is
also involved in various charitable causes.

Watch this clip from the 2002 Oscar nominated film
Lagaan,
staring the fabulous Aamir Khan .
The film takes place in Victorian colonial India. During a draught the
English colonizers have called for a double tax (lagaan) on the local Indian
farmers. Feeling the injustice of the situation, Bhuvan, Khan's character,
bets the English Captain that he and his farmer friends will beat the
English in a game of cricket (a game that Bhuvan has never played before).
If the farmers win, they will never have to pay lagaan again, if they lose,
they must pay triple lagaan.

In this clip, Bhuvan and his friend Gauri, must convince their friends and
fellow villagers that while the task might seem impossible, the earth and
the sky belong to them and are worth fighting for.

Listen, O my friend,
What is this fear you have?

The earth is ours
And so is the sky.

The song is called "Mitwa."

This is just one of the several fantastic songs and dance sequences from
this movie. If you are interested at all in Bollywood (and good foreign
flicks in general), I highly recommend
Lagaan.
It's long though, as are most Bollywood films, but I wouldn't be ashamed in
you if you wanted to fast forward through much of, what seems like a 45
minute cricket game toward the end of the movie.

Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman's new
release, is the story of the impoverished teen Jamal Malik who becomes a
contestant on the Hindi version of "Who wants to be a Millionaire." The
film jumps back and forth through time presenting the viewer with life tales
that lead Jamal to possess the answer to every question.

interesting!!!

and, silent invocation?!  SILENT? what kinda music and what kinda instruments
would ARR hav used in this? very soft strings, flutes is my guess!!

And, how can i forget Mylapore Blues!! I'm expecting a wonderful fusion, with
tamil/sanskrit chants!

Connections will be a wonderful treat to end 2008, I believe!!!

Congrats ARR!
Looks like the movie's popularity is just causing it to sweep all related

That show was brilliant!!!  No, wait.. it was more than that it was
heavenly, out-of-the-world!!!

And, as Indmov Buff has mentioned, I was there in the audience, cheering for
Vijay Narain, our group member, who is now among the top 8 contestants in the
show! :D

I was transported to another world that day, watching and hearing it live!! :)
Stephen truly rocks!

I know he has worked with ARR, but can anyone confirm for which songs/movies
has he worked with ARR?

Cheers,

er, no actually. 2 (or probably 3) of his songs were part of the
shortlist last year but none of them was finally nominated. By all
accounts, "Jai Ho" stands a good chance to be nominated though.

RE: [arr] Who Will Be Nominated For Best Score And Best Original Song At The Oscars ?

2008-12-10 Thread shafaq Ishaan

i think ARR should be nominated for the oscars 2009, and he deserves it.
well i didn`t see the film yet, but on the scores of the soundtrack i can say
that the music is too strong to
compare with the others. check out, mausam & escape;latika`s theme.
the dark knight score is okay, quantum of solace score is an average, nothing
new, the changeling is odd, wall-E is a hit. so let`s see rahman or elfman.
but this year is for rahman, and he will be the first indian composer to
recieve an oscar.

I think ARR has a very strong chance for the best song category but I doubt if
he even gets nominated for the best score (I'd love to be proved wrong
though). The reason being there was not much material/scope for the score as
ARR himself mentioned that Danny Boyle wanted the songs themselves to be the
score. I also think that the academy is heavily biased towards string
heavy/orchestral scores which SDM is anything but.

Re: [arr] Confusion about Connections!

2008-12-10 Thread Arun KB Ganesh
With all due respect : I certainly don't appreciate the idea behind
releasing songs exclusively on Nokia phones... As a person buying ARR CDs on
the 1st day, these 'exclusive releases' deprives me the pleasure of
listening to an ARR album on CD... There are many fans out here who probably
cannot afford to buy Nokia phones...

It was the same in case of PFMB.. And by the time the actual PFMB CD came
out, the MP3s had flooded the internet...

It is initially a Nokia-only release. A CD release will likely follow in the

Re: [arr] Who Will Be Nominated For Best Score And Best Original Song At The Oscars ?

2008-12-10 Thread Prasad Varma
I think ARR has a very strong chance for the best song category but I doubt if
he even gets nominated for the best score (I'd love to be proved wrong though).

The reason being there was not much material/scope for the score as ARR
himself mentioned that Danny Boyle wanted the songs themselves to be the score.

I also think that the academy is heavily biased towards string heavy/orchestral
scores which SDM is anything but.

[arr] Ghajini was shot in sync sound - Asin ( SEMI ARR )

2008-12-10 Thread Vithur
 Hot property

Southern import Asin comes clean on controversial reports about her equation
with Ghajini hero Aamir Khan.

*What kind of response have you been getting after the promos of Ghajini?*
The responses have been very good. People are now waiting for the film to
release. A debut opposite Aamir Khan is an absolute dream-come-true. Though
I have done many films down South, this is like a baby step for me. Not only
the film is my first venture with a superstar, it is being directed by
Murugadoss and has music is by A R Rahman. It is a dream team.

*How comfortable are you with Hindi?*
Quite comfortable. Though I have been born and brought up in Kerala, I have
gone to a Naval Indian school where I have been exposed to Hindi. Many of my
teachers were North Indians, so since childhood I have been speaking the
language. Ghajini was shot in sync sound, and thankfully my Hindi was good,
I had no problems.

*A heroine of an Aamir starrer isn't left with much to do in the film. What
is your take on that?*
But as Aamir's heroine I am sure I will get fabulous exposure both
nationally and internationally.

*There were reports that before filming a romantic scene, Aamir went on long
walks with you.*
(Cuts in) I don't know from where such reports originate. I was comfortable
doing all types of scenes with him.

*Weren't you upset with your hero for not letting you speak to the press?*
That's absolutely untrue. I was completely shocked when I read this report.

*Didn't you want to clarify your stance then?*
As I said, initially I was surprised. After that I laughed it off.

*So, how was it working with the perfectionist Aamir?*
Oh, he's a very supportive and encouraging co-star. The media refers to him
as a perfectionist in the negative sense, but I find him absolutely
dedicated, passionate and focussed on his work. At the same time, he is
extremely down-to-earth without any airs about him. He lets the director be
the captain of the ship.

*Having been part of the Tamil version of Ghajini, what difference do you
find between the two heroes? *
Both of them have brought their own techniques to the role. Surya has
portrayed it in a different way. However, I think we should wait for the
film to release before discussing this further.

*Did you feel a sense of deja vu while performing as you had been there,
done that?*
Character-wise, there isn't anything different between the two. In both the
versions, my name is Kalpana, a girl from a lower-middle class family. She
is a struggler in an ad firm, one of the model types who to wants to make it
big in the ad industry. Though the character is the same, shooting for the
film was a new experience because we have made a few changes in the climax,
tweaked it a bit and added new action scenes. Also, except for the director,
the entire technical crew was new for me.

*Kalpana doesn't seem glamourous...*
No, she is not at all glamourous. A girl-next-door type, she is completely a
non-Bollywood kind of a heroine. But the role is so good that I didn't think
twice about doing it.

*You star in London Dreams opposite Salman Khan. What would you say is the
difference between the two Khans?*
On the contrary, I find a lot of similarities between the two. Both of them
are cool to work with, only Salman is more spontaneous. Even Ajay Devgan is
a pucca professional. He is quite a prankster and the three of us had a
great time. In fact, it was one of my best outdoor shoots.

*We heard you had signed a film with Akshay Kumar?*
No. Right now, I have only London Dreams.

*Are you doing any South films or are you looking at establishing yourself
in Bollywood first?*
I would like to do films that excite me. Language is not a barrier. Right
now, I haven't signed any films in the South, though. My immediate
commitment is to London Dreams, for which we will be shooting in Mumbai. A
major portion of the film has already been shot and only a few scenes and
songs are remaining.

*You are endorsing many brands from Colgate to Tanishq?*
Yes, so far I have endorsed around 60 brands. I started my career with ads.
And films were a natural progression. Besides the Colgate commercial, which
I have shot with Saif Ali Khan, I had done the Miranda ad with Zayed Khan.
Soon, I will be shooting for a Tata Sky ad too.

*With Aamir Khan?*
(Laughs) I don't know.

[arr] Bollywood - Top contenders for the Best Music Awards in 2008

2008-12-10 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Top contenders for the Best Music Awards in 2008
December 10th, 2008

We have assembled the top contenders for the best music awards for the year
2008.  The films that stand a strong chance are Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Bachna Ae
haseeno, Rock On, Fashion, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Jodha Akbar. This is our
list as per the popularity of the music of each and every film.
The music of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is the most awaited one of the year 2008.
Salim Suleiman are the music directors of the film and seem to have done a good
job. Even before the movie could release the music has taken off real well. The
song Haule Haule sung by Sukhwinder seems to be on the lips of everyone, be it
young or old. And the song Tujh mein rab dikhta hai is also following it in
popularity,it’s a song sung by Roop Kumar Rathod. The others are not that great
but overall a good attempt and the song Haule Haule itself makes the album
worth the money.
Then comes the hit music of Bachana Ae haseeeno  and the music directors for
this film are Vishaal and Shekhar. The song Khuda Jaane overnight hit. The song
Ahista Ahista is a treat for Lucky Ali fans. The songs small town girl and jogi
maahi have a Punjabi style to it with the dhol beats.last but not the least
Bachna Ae Haseeno’ rocks too! They’ve incorporated the original Kishore parts
really well and Sumit Kumar (Kishore’s son) sings the rest of it. You can’t
compare him to the great Kishore but he’s done very well to keep up and doesn’t
let you down. This is song is throughly enjoyable. Khuda Jane and the title
track are the ones which might help this album to go ahead in the race. Vishaal
and Shekhar have once again proved they are a hit pair.
Rock on-complete rock song experience. Strong guitar riffs, energetic rhythm,
crisp drumming, simple tunes, Farhaan sounds great in songs likeSocha Hai and
Pichle Saat Dino Mein .Music directors Shankar Ehsaan and Loy have done a great
job. The song Ye Tumhari Meri Baatein’ is so soothing. The voice of the new
singer Dominique Cerejo has good presence and character. The other songs like
Rock On, Pichle Saat Dino Mein, Sindbad the Sailor and Zehreelay are all
typical rock songs. And finally the song Tum ho to a case of excellent
composition. Definitely a welcome change from the regular bhangra and disco.
Shankar Ehsaan and Loy have shown their versatility once again.
Fashion-the music of this film is given by Salim-Sulaiman. The song Mar Jaava
is an ever-cherishing melody that will keep you haunting over the times. The
husky voice of Shruthi pathak is mesmerizing. Then we have another soft number
Kuch khaas Hai which is sung by Mohit Chauhan and Neha Bhasin. A typical
romantic song with soft music. The songs Ashiyana and Fashion ka jalwa are
songs with foot tapping music with rhythmic beats. Overall an excellent effort
by Salim Suleiman the music seemed to have topped the charts every week.
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane na- The music director for this film is A.R.Rahman. The song
Kabhie Kabhie did really well,a funloving romantic song and enjoyable song. The
song pappu cant dance had also topped the charts. That was basically made for
listeners who enjoyed funny lyrics and funny songs. The other numbers like
jaane tu mera kya hai, tu boli and nazre milana though not outstanding still
managed to pull the crowd. But one of the best songs in this film was khin to
hogi wo, sung by Rashid and Vasundhara Das. A soft number very soothting to the
ears. Overall an excellent package of fast peppy and soft romantic numbers and
nevertheless when Rahman is around things just can’t go wrong.
Jodha Akbar-last but not the least another piece of art by the mucic maestro
A.R.Rahman.  The music is magical, spectacular, bracing, pleasant and different
from the tunes and beats of the contemporary style of music. The tracks are
rustic, earthy and definitely pulsating. The track Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah is
a wild song with so many different instruments and singers together, one of
Rahman’s best. The romantic track Jashn-e-bahaara is enticing. Pure
unadulterated music. Then comes Khawaja Mere Khawja  a fabulous qawaali based
song sung by Rahman himself. After praises for the emperor you are taken to the
world of two lovers with In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein another soft and soothing
number. Finally the mind-blowing bhajan Manmohana is another soft track.
Overall every track of this film is a masterpiece in itself, and definitely a
very strong contender for the awards.
Even though 2008 was not a great year in terms of great music still we have
managed to anaylise the best compositions and the composers. From the entire
selection we think Jodhas Akbar stands the highest possibility of receiving the
awards because of  A.R.Rahman’s  outstanding performance. Followed by Fashion,
Rock on, Rab Ne, Bachna Ae Haseeno and then Jaane tu.  But Kudos to all the
other as well for putting their best foot forward in the process.

[arr] Sakkarakatti - Film Posters in Chennai

2008-12-10 Thread Vithur
Dear All,

Everywhere around Chennai city, we can see Posters of Sakkarakatti movie
having ARR's smiling snap blown up in a very big size, that it almost covers
the entire poster, and on the other corner, see Shantanu Bagyaraj's image
from the movie. The caption is about TAXI TAXI song, and the records that
it had created.

The special part is that Shantanu's portion in that poster has been torn in
many places by people who have been fed up with his acting, and by the movie
( I guess) , and ARR's portion remains intact.

I observed this at slum areas too, where usually, the film heroes have a lot
of registered fan associations.

ARR's smiling face now decorates almost all places in Chennai, be it be slum
areas, water tanks and everywhere

Heartening, Very glad to see this... I hope and wish he comes out of his
painful moments and be happy as always. God Bless.

Thanks

Rahman triumphs at LA Awards

Arthur J Pais

December 10, 2008 14:38 IST
Last Updated: December 10, 2008 15:32 IST

With the nominations for the Golden Globes around the corner, the influential
Los Angeles Film Critics Association awards have been just announced, with
plenty of surprises for the perennially nominated Meryl Streep [Images] and
well regarded star Kate Winslett.

While the animated hit Wall-E ($490 million worldwide and counting) walked away
with the best picture nod, Danny Boyle took the best director award for Slumdog
Millioniare beating fellow Brit Christopher Nolan, the maker of the highest
grossing film (about $996 million worldwide) The Black Knight.

A R Rahman was named the best composer for his work in Slumdog. Among the high
profiled scores this year are in the films Quantum of Solace [Images], Mamma
Mia [Images]! and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Los Angeles Film Critics Association is not particularly known for hailing big
Hollywood hits and this year's choice could raise a few eyebrows. But then the
association promptly hugged the underdog by giving the best director award to
Boyle. Slumdog, which had no distributor five months ago when Warner
Independent folded, was then picked up Fox Searchlight. The distributor, which
has released smash hits such as Juno, has been lucky with India themed films --
the Oscar nominated Deepa Mehta film Water as well as Mira Nair's The Namesake
[Images]. It also distributed the arthouse hit, Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling
Limited.

Los Angeles Times said Slumdog, which got the third highest votes following
Wall-E and The Black Knight, created a controversy among the 43 voters.

Though the film has received the highest praise from publications across the
country including Time, The New Yorker, USA Today and The Chicago Tribune, some
of the voters in Los Angeles dismissed it outright.

'Its scrum of detractors said they wouldn't vote for it under any
circumstances,' wrote LA Times, 'with some critics claiming it was too
derivative, coming off like an amped-up Satyajit Ray [Images] film.'

The film, in its fourth week of limited release, has grossed a healthy $5.5
million in 27 days of release in North America. It was named top film earlier
this month by the National Board of Review and the Washington, DC, Area Film
Critics Assn.

While Sean Penn [Images] winning the best actor award for his vivid portrayal
of a real life politician, who was openly gay and was gunned in San Francisco
over two decades ago, in Milk, the supporting role award went to Heath Ledger
for his rousing work as the villain in The Dark Knight [Images].

Penelope Cruz [Images], who has just about 15 minutes (out of 100) in Woody
Allen's [Images] arthouse hit Vicki Cristina Barcelona nabbed the best
supporting actress nod, for her work in the smaller success, Elegy.

There were plenty of snubs: For instance, Kate Winslet [Images] who has two
films in release this month, Revolutionary Road and The Reader.

Also Read: Dev Patl talks about Slumdog Millionaire
Streep was seen in two films, too. While the smash hit musical Mamma Mia!
(which has taken about $560 million worldwide) was not considered award-worthy,
her performance as a dogmatic nun in Doubt has enchanted some critics and
infuriated some who think it is too loud and one-dimensional.

The best actress nod went to Sally Hawkins in the little seen Happy-Go-Lucky.

But some of the films that were snubbed, especially Frost/Nixon, may get a
boost when the Golden Globe nominations come out on Thursday. The Globes, which
are televised and are reportedly watched by over 50 million worldwide, has
nominations in two categories, drama and musicals/comedy. The Oscar nominations
will be announced on January 22.

Hi Fameeb,

I am booked for the show on the 18th in DFC Grand Cinema as I found the the
prices for the gala screening a bit high for my liking. May be we can meet up
some other time. BTW, if anyone’s attending on the 18th at 7 pm lemme know as
we can meet up. You probably have a good chance to bump into Boyle or ARR if
they attend. Good luck.

"Maa" from Taare Zameen Par. Other examples from his own
collection are Vellai Pookal and Khamosh Raat. Would love to hear ARR
compose a very mellow, melodious, slow, acoustic guitar dominated
track. He hasn't done something like this in a long time. Elay and
Ra Bau Ru were very acoustic, but also very fast. Hoping to hear
something slow and enchanting.

The song "Maa" by SEL captured people's heart, also due to tremendous
lyrics. WAiting for a song from ARR that will also totally capture
people's hearts, bring them to tears with great lyrical value. No
doubt, ARR's recent works have moved people through inspiration,
romance, etc.

WOW! That was really good talk show for 1 hr 30 min. It felt good when
they talked about this group in later part of the convo.
Rahman said he leaving US within a day or so.. that means back to work
when he comes back? that was really short time off..
Good to know that Ravana music is almost complete

Rahman's Puli – redefining deals

December 09, 2008

  As
it seems the Madras Maestro Rahman
is redefining music right deals in
Tollywood. His latest soundtrack
album
for the movie Puli in Telugu has
been
sold for an enviable sum of 2.5
crores
to Sony Corporation. This is said
to be a record quite unseen in the
history of music deals in
Tollywood.
Puli stars Pavan Kalyan in the lead
and is

directed by S J Surya. Puli's music is
expected
to be out soon.

With this deal, Sony will have exclusive
access
to the release and publicity of the
soundtrack
of the movie. This deal also includes
access
to a handsome profit obtained from selling
caller tunes and dialer tunes supported by
cellphone network providers.

Re: [arr] Akon to colloborate with A.R.Rahman - MTV Asia.com

2008-12-10 Thread pratap

Akon Says 'You're Welcome' For Singing-Rapper Trend And Hopes It Continues To
Grow

By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting Todd Brown (MTV.com)

Akon is totally digging the current trend of rappers becoming singers. He told
MTV News
he thinks it's cool that artists like Lil Wayne and Kanye West are
embracing melodies, and he isn't shy about taking some credit for the
movement, having crossed back and forth over the singer/rapper divide
for years and helped popularize the heavy use of Auto-Tune along with
his "Bartender" collaborator T-Pain.

"As an artist, depending on who you are, you should never be in a
situation where you feel threatened by another artist," he said. "If
anything, I embrace the fact that they're doing it. Music changes every
year. I'm just happy [about] the fact that people are jumping on what
we're already doing. I look at it like a tribute to what we're already
doing, and I look at it like a compliment, really.

"I say 'you're welcome' every time I hear [rappers singing]," said Akon, who
just released his new album, Freedom.
"A melody has a way of describing [words], 'cause of the emotions that
come with melody. Melody brings it out better than a bland vocal. It's
easier to relate."

'Kon also doesn't see the singing-rapper trend dying in 2009. In fact,
with so many artists jumping on the bandwagon, he thinks it will get
bigger over time. "I definitely think it will continue and grow.
Hip-hop grew out of its element; it's literally a lifestyle now."

Akon said he appreciates the recent efforts put out by rappers like
West. "With Kanye, you never know what to expect. He's not afraid to
experiment. He's always had that open mind. That's how you have to be
as an artist."

In order to push his own musical boundaries, the Senegalese singer has
recently been collaborating with Indian composer A.R. Rahman. "When you
have two people of two different cultures, it's like making Kool-Aid,"
he said. "Think of it like the best of both worlds at the end of the
day. You never even think certain things can be done like that. It's
always juggling back and forth."

Meanwhile, he hasn't pinned down a free moment to hook up with another
Indian composer, Aadesh Shrivastava, but he promises the two busy
artists will make time for each other. "Actually, me and Aadesh have
been talking. My schedule is so crazy hectic ... and he's moving
heavily too. ... But you can definitely look forward to the
collaboration in the future."

Akon has also been busy in the studio with American icons Michael
Jackson and Whitney Houston, and he noted that his collaboration with
the latter will "shock a lot of people."

"I can't speak too much on Mike's project," he added of his work with
Jackson. "Mike is a perfectionist. He's probably the most brilliant
person I've sat across from. A humble, cool cat."

And working with a legend like Jackson has taught Akon a thing or two.
"I'm on a whole 'nother level now," he said. "It's all about the
presentation. It has to be big, it has to be right."

[arr] 'Ghajini' to arrive earlier

2008-12-10 Thread Sreekrishnan R
'Ghajini' to arrive earlier

Post
26/11, film business has been hit hard. Most cineplexes are running to
negligible occupancy and in some instances, the management has been
forced to call off shows due to lack of audiences. Perhaps this may've
prompted people to assume that Aamir Khan's keenly anticipated
‘Ghajini’, which is confirmed for Thursday, 25th December, might get
pushed to the New Year. But it's not true!

On
the contrary, ‘Ghajini’ producer Madhu Mantena says that the film will
arrive earlier. Till now, the film was slated for release on Thursday,
25th December, but the makers have decided to release it on Wednesday,
24th December night. "We're organising paid previews across the country
on Wednesday night, which means we're releasing ‘Ghajini’ a day
earlier," Madhu tells me.

Sure, the release date of ‘Ghajini’ has been altered. It's Wednesday, not
Thursday!!

2008-12-10 Thread Gomzy™
Dark Knight is good but has hangovers of Hans Zimmer's previous works in The
Da Vinci Code
and The last Samurai. Its cuz of Newton Howard that the music has some life
in it. Else it does not offer
anything new.

Wall E should be one helluva competition for SDM. Again havent heard BB yet.
