[arr] I Don’t Know Himesh Reshammiya at All: A R Rahman

2009-02-16 Thread Roshan
February 17th, 2009

A R RahmanWe read about how Himesh Reshammiya has refused to sing for
A R Rahman. But Rahman says he has never met Reshammiya.

Laughs the soft spoken maestro sarcastically, "Our communication has
been only through the press. He told the press he wanted to sing for
me. I told the press I had composed a song that would suit his voice.
To this he replied again through the press that he didn't want to sing
for me. We've not met. We haven't exchanged a call or an sms."

Rahman finds it strange that after hounding him for so long Reshammiya
changed his mind. "For the past two years I had been reading about how
he wanted to sing for me. As a gesture returning his compliment I
thought this song would be perfect. I didn't know he would sing for me
only when I compose for a film starring him. I don't know if I can do
that," say Rahman who turns 41 in January.

"2008 was my most productive year in Hindi cinema in the last ten
years. I had 7 soundtracks in the North and South. And I'm happy with
all of them. God has been kind. I haven't planned anything big for
2008. But my music school in Chennai is my biggest dream come true.
The whole of 2008 the school gave me a high."

Rahman has just composed his first ever song for an international
opera-on-film that's directed by Shekhar Kapoor. "I thank Shekhar for
trusting me with something so unusual. The singer Kavita Baliga is a
teacher at my music school. Though she's Indian she comes from LA.
It's a great team that we have at music school. Right now I've 110
students. They come from India, Singapore and Malaysia. I want to
cultivate musicians who don't know just about classical music but also
new-age sounds. Today's complete musician has to be clued into world
music. And that's what we're trying to inculcate at my school."

Eventually Rahman wants a music orchestra coming out of his school.
"And I also want to produce new voices for films."

Rahman regrets the fact that music and harmony have gone out of our
music. "In the course of time listeners have lost patience with
melody. All the tracks have to be super-racy. As a composer I'd
definitely prefer melody. But if people want to come to movies just to
have a good time then I'll give them racy songs. I don't want to lose
out on the young audience. However filmmakers need to understand the
value of melody. It's not as though people have not liked the melodies
in Yuvraaj. I've to give it to Mr Ghai for taking film music away from
the predictable. I'm very proud of Yuvraaj. There are two kinds of
music, the one to draw audiences in like Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na or the
one that propels the plot forward like Yuvraaj."

Speaking of his very special rapport with Aamir Khan Rahman says,
"Whatever goes to Aamir is a very high-profile and filtered project.
So my music has to automatically match up."

The year has been plush with projects for Rahman. "I've worked with
three generations of directors, and in as many continents. I can tell
what they like and not like. Working with Abbas Tyrewala in Jaane
Tu…Ya Jaane Na was a rewarding experience. Yes, I'll be doing Abbas'
next.I'm as proud of Pappu can't dance sala as Tu muskura. Now after
Ghajini, I've Delhi 6 and Adaa coming up one after another."

An unfulfilled dream? "All my private album projects have been
neglected because of my movie commitments. All my colleagues at my
private music-label are crying about this. I want to complete these
non-film projects." -Subhash K Jha / Sampurn Media

Hi ppl,

In Hello FM (106.4 FM, Chennai), this week's gonna be ARR special, with many
interviews of celebs and also interviews of ARR... The program is called
"Rahmaayanam"...
I think it started at 9 pm.. It's still going on..
I didnt know about this, and missed most part of the show...

I caught ARR saying about Tom Cruise gifting him a bottle of Champagne. (I
think this is what he mentioned in Kalaignar TV interview also.. Remember? he
mentioned that someone gave him a bottle of some expensive alcoholic drinks,
and he returned it saying he doesnt drink must be this incident!)

Later, actor Parthiban spoke.. he said that he is totally in love with Rahman,
and adores him. The film Yelelo for which 4 songs were recorded, brought them
together. The film was shelved, but still, their relationship continues!

The show is still going on.. dono for how long!

Anyone caught the show?? I guess, I missed more than 1 hour of the show! :( :(

This is one stacked week, as the talkies have seemingly upped their game for
Conan O'Brien's final week hosting Late Night. Leno, as if anticipating his
replacement, has booked a very Conan-like music lineup for the week,
procuring Andrew Bird, Oscar lock A.R. Rahman and Monday night's starting off
point, Lily Allen.

The UK star just hit number one in her home country for both song ("The Fear")
and album (It's Not Me, It's You) while also making headlines for advising
parents to let their kids try drugs. BesidesLeno, the spunky Allen will also be
on Ellen (Tuesday) and look for her to be a little more tight-lipped with US
audiences (see her chat with Matt Lauer last week). For instance, don't expect
her to goflashing us her third nipple.

While the Lily Allen stateside onslaught is already in progress,A.R. Rahman's
is about to begin. Already the biggest pop star in India, Rahman's work
for Slumdog Millionaire is almost guaranteed to win him an Oscar -- likely two
-- and place him on a bigger stage here in the US. He'll be performing one of
his two nominated songs --"Jai Ho" with singer Sukhwinder Singh --
on Leno Thursday, and then an abbreviated version of it and "O Saya" for the
Oscar telecast. And by "abbreviated" I mean part of a medley of all three
nominated songs, limited to 65 seconds each. This new limitation is what
led Peter Gabriel (the other nominated artist) to pull out of performing as a
protest. His song for Wall-E, "Down to Earth," (which normally runs 6 minutes)
will now likely be performed by the Soweto Gospel Choir. Meanwhile, M.I.A.,
Rahman's other collaborator, just had her baby this past Wednesday and it's
probably too soon to expect her to make it
back to the stage. I guess stranger things have happened -- like performing at
the Grammys with contractions on her due date.

Finally, it's the final week for Late Night Conan O'Brien before Jimmy Fallon
steps in and Conan disappears for a couple months getting ready for the Tonight
Showgig. To send him off, White Stripesare playing their first public
performance since the summer of 2007. They have a history with O'Brien, going
back to even before appearances on the show (they played five nights in a row
back in 2003). Conan has known Meg and Jack White since before they were even
The White Stripes, which goes a long ways explaining Conan's appearance in
their Michel Gondry directed video for "Denial Twist."

Wow ... all that and no mention of Letterman's stellar first half of the week.
He's got Willie Nelson with Asleep at the Wheel on Monday, M. Ward on Tuesday,
and Antony and the Johnsons stopping by on Wednesday. Any other week, those
would be the leads, my friends.

[arr] The battle for Oscar’s top tune

2009-02-16 Thread Vinod Raju
The battle for Oscar's top tune
BRYAN BORZYKOWSKI, FOR METRO CANADA
February 17, 2009 12:25

Most people tune into the Academy Awards for the glitz, glamour and
the best picture trophy, but for music lovers the real show is all
about best original song.

This year's battle for Oscar is a little less fierce than in past
years — two songs penned by Indian-born songwriter A.R. Rahman for
Slumdog Millionare are up against a tune by Peter Gabriel from Wall-
E — but the songs might be the most interesting to vie for the prize
yet.

That's thanks to Rahman, whose songs O Saya, which features Sri
Lankan songstress M.I.A. on vocals, and Jai Ho brilliantly fuse
American-electro sounds with traditional Indian melodies, a musical
combination that's never graced an Academy Award stage.

While it's a good bet one of Rahman's tunes will win, Peter
Gabriel's Down To Earth — a fun, but relatively laid-back affair —
has history on its side. Some of the more recent winners haven't
been boisterous over-the-top tunes like Slumdog's are, but rather
quiet, introspective singer-songwriter sounds.

Last year's winner Falling Slowly was a passionate duet by The
Frames' Glen Hansard and Czech songstress Markéta Irglová. It was a
victory for indie rock fans, but not so much for outside of the box
artists.

Melissa Ethridge, Jorge Dexler, Bob Dylan and Phil Collins have all
taken home a trophy too, and while the songs were award-worthy, they
all fit a similar singer-songwriter mold.

If it's not guys or gals with guitars (or, in the '80s, pianos),
it's ensemble musical numbers. Songs from the Little Mermaid, Fame,
Mary Poppins and Dirty Dancing have all won Oscars; the most
nominations and wins belongs to Sammy Cahn, a Broadway lyricist.

Despite the fact that plenty of the music world's most acclaimed
tunes have won best original song (Take My Breath Away, I Just
Called to Say I Love you, Que Sera Sera have all been victorious),
some of the most memorable winners have come from unlikely artists.

It's hard to forget Three Six Mafia's thrilling 2005 performance of
Hustle and Flow's It's Hard Out There For a Pimp — and their even
more stunning win, becoming the first African-American music group
to ever take home an Oscar. And, although they didn't snag the main
prize, Beyoncé's pitch perfect, '60s-style pairing with Jennifer
Hudson on Dreamgirls' Listen was easily one of Oscars' most
memorable duets ever.

So while Peter Gabriel could follow in the footsteps of many other
big name solo artists — Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Carly
Simon, Neil Young and Elton John have all been up for the award —
Rahman's brilliant fusion of multi-cultural musical styles, and the
fact that he's somehow not up against Springsteen's remarkable track
for The Wrestler, likely means his name will be called on Sunday.

Even if one of his tunes is triumphant, though, it's doubtful we'll
see an influx of cross-cultural sounds in the future. But, unlike
the Grammy's, this will be one night where the best song will win.

Re: [arr] Re: Colours CD

2009-02-16 Thread Anil Nair
I own a cassette of Colors. I had no clue until I read about the Dilip on
this album being ARR until quite recently :-). Thats the magic about this
group. Each day you get to know new stuff :-)
I have been a big fusion fan (indian classical/western stuff) and thats how
this cassette found its way into my collection. Its indeed a great album to
have ...if u like fusion music and even more if u like KV and Zakir

True that ARR did not have much share in this CD but this
is an attractive and interesting CD for collectors for reasons..
1. Recorded when ARR was Dilip
2. Classical Music Album
3. Along with Stalwarts Zakir Hussain and Vaidhyanathan.

Re: [arr] Colours CD

2009-02-16 Thread Aakarsh
I first heard this album in 1995. The album was released much earlier.
The album had credits to musicians and keyboards was credited to Dileep. I just
had a hunch (but was not sure) that this Dileep could be Dileep KUmar who
became A.R.Rahman and people were talking about the score of Bombay. it was
just a fleeting thought and i didnt bother about it much. Later, my hunch
proved to be right.

Coming to the album, ARR fans need not expect much Rahman-ism out of this
album. The album showcases the talents of Late Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan and
Ustad Zakir Hussain primarily and the music arrangement capabilities of
Jeyasekhar, who arranged and conducted the music. It is a brilliant album for
sure. But to be frank, contribution from Rahman is very minimal and limited to
just 1-2 tracks(i think maximum usage of keyboards was only in 'Evolution'
track). Thats because most of the tracks are pure classical and not fusion. The
fusion, in some Indian classical tracks, is non-electronic and involves string
orchestra playing tunes in western classical style.

Bottomline: Buy it if you like Indian Classical Music, Instrumental Music,
Carnatic Violin-Tabla stuff. If you are strictly looking for ARR stuff, forget
it.

SDM music is western music (Re: [arr] Re: SDM=Roja)

2009-02-16 Thread Chord
Out of everything you've said, I agree with you most on this point you
mentioned:

"Of course, I concede that there are limits on how much freedom a film
producer/ director or a composer can take. I am sure that with this
recognition, our man would get further offers in which he would be
allowed more freedom to give "Indian" music for Western audience."

For me, Bombay Dreams was ARR getting his foot in the door to the
Western audience. Elizabeth and LOTR made the door a bit wider. SDM
has flung the door completely wide open and ARR has stepped inside.
And I do feel that SDM has some pretty important Indian ethnic
components to it. But, before ARR can go completely inside and lie on
the couch, he will still need to do a few more "Western" oriented
music scores before he can go completely ethnic Indian. Of course, he
could go completely ethnic Indian now, but I would be a bit nervous
about his acceptability at this early stage, despite accolades right
now. Let him go further inside, lie on the couch, get comfy, then do
a completely ethnic Indian score.

[arr] Another review of D6 the movie

2009-02-16 Thread Chord
Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art served as the glamorous venue for
last night's world premiere of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's much
anticipated Bollywood spectacular Delhi 6, starring Abhishek Bachchan
and Sonam Kapoor. In addition to the director and composer A.R. Rahman
(who is currently being showered with awards for his score for Slumdog
Millionaire), the luminous stars were on hand to greet the crowd.
Though the film is a love letter to the Chandni Chowk area of Old
Delhi, New York City was chosen for the premiere because Delhi 6 opens
on the Brooklyn Bridge, and one of its best sequences is set in a
Delhi-fied Times Square of the mind.

But the story of Delhi 6 moves east swiftly: when his beloved Grandma
(veteran actress Waheeda Rehman) resolves to return to India, the
amiable Rochan (Bachchan) decides to go with her. His homecoming to
Delhi's zip code 6 is an opportunity for a colorful portrait of both
the area and its inhabitants: Rochan discovers an extended family with
competitive uncles and prankster kids, neighbors separated by thin
walls, the local town idiot, the money lender, the lower-caste
prostitute, the abusive police chef, the mad fakir — and a mysterious
threat known only as "the black monkey."

And of course, there's the girl. Lovely Bittu is played by newcomer
Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil Kapoor (whom you may know as the game
show host in Slumdog Millionaire.) With dreams of appearing on Indian
Idol and an arranged marriage in the works, Bittu likes to escape to
the roof, where she occasionally performs song-and-dance numbers with
the pigeons. All ten songs by Golden Globe and BAFTA winner and Oscar
nominee A.R. Rahman are joyful and diverse, partaking from a wider
number of styles than his Slumdog soundtrack.
Whimsy and a generally warm mood inform most of the character sketches
and handsomely shot vignettes of local life during Delhi 6's first
half: reverse-culture-shock jokes, a lavish production of the story of
Ram and Sita, a visit to the Taj Mahal, and a cow giving birth in the
street. In the film's final hour, more serious themes — unwelcome
traditions and smoldering religious hatred — come bubbling to the
surface and erupt into a Do the Right Thing climax that took me by
surprise.

Maybe the runaway success of Slumdog Millionaire will inspire western
audiences to sample more authentic Bollywood fare; with its first-rate
music, world-class stars, and postcard-ready views of India (not to
mention the relatively reasonable running time), Delhi 6 presents an
especially welcoming option.

[arr] First review of D6 the movie

2009-02-16 Thread Chord
http://www.naachgaana.com/2009/02/16/delhi-6-review/

Abhishek, Sonam charm New York

One may have seen Bollywood stars dancing amidst the tulip fields in
Holland or singing a song at New York's Time Square. But do you
remember seeing an auto rickshaw or Delhi shops at Times Square? Well,
in writer-director Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra's briskly-paced and often
hilarious film Delhi-6, the make-believe world springs up suddenly
amidst real-life like stories firmly set in Old Delhi.

In an utterly beguiling scene, the character of Waheeda Rehman
suddenly takes ill, and has to be transported to the hospital in an
auto rickshaw from her home in a narrow alley in Old Delhi. But a
large reverential crowd gathered to see a cow deliver in the middle of
a busy street stalls the auto. By the time Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan)
disperses the crowd, he cannot find his grandmother. You guessed it —
she has not only recovered but has also been inching towards the cow
to have the darshan of the holy delivery.

The fertile imagination Mehra and writer-lyricist Prasoon Joshi fill
the film with a number of unforgettable incidents. And with an
admirable ensemble cast that offers fine performances from Vijay Raaz,
the self-important and corrupt police officer, Divya Dutta as the
sensuous outcaste and Rishi Kapoor as a lost lover who offers Roshan a
few life lessons, Mehra still extracts engaging performances from
Abhishek and Sonam Kapoor.

Add to the cast hundreds of pigeons, especially Masakali, that
symbolizes the spirit of Bittu (Sonam), and the kala bandar (black
monkey) that not only creates havoc and allows religious bigots to
rile against the Muslims in the locality but also, ironically, unites
the warring Hindus and Muslims in the end.

The ending is a tad prolonged and too wordy but in the final
reckoning, Delhi-6 demands repeat viewing.

On February 20, the first award-worthy film of the year will open in
1,200 theatres across India and some 300 outside India. Bring out the
box of mithai.

FAN REVIEW FROM NYC[/b]

The movie is great.
Music is fantastic…the WHOLE cast did a phenomenal job.
IMO Abhishek did AWESOME…he really did well with his character Roshan.
Sonam…she has really improved!
Loved her in the movie (I also liked her in Saawariya). She did justice
to the role of Bittu.
The rest of the cast, Rishi, Divya great job wink.gif.
The movie mostly revolves around Abhishek's character, Roshan.
IMO Sonam's role wasn't that big but she does play important role in
the movie in a way.
The movie had comedy, action, and all that jazz that GOOD movies need.
I cried towards the ending of the movie…

But yeah…the movie is a must watch!!!
It was made nicely

Thanks a lot dude! Excellent collection and excellent quality!

[arr] a bit on ARR in this month's FSM issue

2009-02-16 Thread Ramesh R
Film Score Monthly doesn't have much nice things to say about SdM. They goof
around a bit in the latest issue with the editorial beginning as-

"With A.R. Rahman marching toward his inevitable Best Score Oscar, I thought it
might be fun to pretend Slumdog Millionaire didn’t exist and instead consider
the other four nominees...
Now all four will have the privilege of simultaneously losing
yet again."

"In fact, if Slumdog Millionaire were to lose Best Score to any of the other
four nominees,
it would arguably be the greatest surprise/upset in the history of the category.
I’m not sure how or why that makes any sense, but it does. (*If Slumdog
Millionaire does not win the Best Score Oscar, I promise not to criticize the
Academy Music Branch in any way shape or form for three years.)"

There's also a round-up of the Oscar nominees by Cary Wong who says on SdM-

"...this is the movie, like its titular hero, that has captured the imagination
of Post-Barack Obama America...
Overrated movie and score, in my opinion. Only the song, “Jai Ho” stood out as
worthy for any musical nomination, since it ended the film in a memorable way"

"The music is infectious and buoys the movie along, but with only about 13
minutes of actual score, and songs dominating the most of movie, it may be
Babel over again, with the Academy giving the award to Best Score to memorable
moments that were neither original nor underscore. But, there is a minor
problem that could prevent Slumdog from winning Best Song as well: there are
two nominees, and the votes may be split"

Lattoo/Bachchu? I think these 2 songs were okish to average, which
kinda makes Jodhaa Akbar/Jaane Tu/Yuvvraaj better album than Ghajini

SDM music is western music (Re: [arr] Re: SDM=Roja)

2009-02-16 Thread V S Rawat
The recognition SDM is bringing to our man in international arena is
indeed good for him and for our country and for other artists in our
country.

Still, SDM music is not Indian music, me think.

Our man followed the style and trend and methods of West in SDM to give
a music that west is used to listen to, of course with differences.
Indian instruments, Indian ragas, Indian insistence on finer emotion in
music, Indian outspoken-ness, Indian lack-of-subtlety in expressing,
Indian prominence for melodrama, Indian poetry styles and many other
typical and characteristic "Indian" things are not apparent in SDM music.

I would say that in the entire album, choli ke peeche - ringa ringa
sounds much more Indian than Jai Ho sounding Indian.

So, SDM music would not open a window in West for "Indian" music.

SDM music is western music composed by an Indian.

I am still not able to understand why our man chose to make Jai Ho a
love song that made it such a personal song for the lead pair. He could
have given a survivors' Jai Ho song in that exact situation which is a
much higher value and which would have appealed to every human being
even at a much deeper and important level.

--

Of course, I concede that there are limits on how much freedom a film
producer/ director or a composer can take. I am sure that with this
recognition, our man would get further offers in which he would be
allowed more freedom to give "Indian" music for Western audience.

Good thoughj I would say. . He will go to different league altogether by
giving up these (at least Filmfare) awards. . Well he has been in a

he wins in spite of a fresh new music by others, worthy of awards, there
will be so much comments all over again. There's nothing much left for
Rahman to conquer in India. Infact promoting new talents would decrease the
pressure on him.

But it is up to him. . .

[arr] Recent ARR tracks that Westerners might really like

2009-02-16 Thread Chord
There's a lot from ARR's repertoire that I think Westerners would
enjoy, but most recently, here are my picks to sell to a Western
audience (keeping in mind songs that would not sound too foreign or
exotic for Western ears, even though there are better songs).

Tu Bole
Meherbaan
Ishq Ada male
Rehna Tu
Taxi Taxi
Dil Gira Dafatan
Masakali
Dil Ka Rishta
Mastam Mastam
Shano
Bekha
New York Nagaram
Guzarish
Nazrein Milana
Kabhi Aditi
Jaane Kyun (female)
Kahin To
Ru Ba Ru
Khoon Chala
Jaage
Pray for me Brother

[arr] Illayaraja Vs A.R.Rahman

2009-02-16 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
http://ursmusically.blogspot.com/2009/02/illayaraja-vs-arrahman.html

I was reading this beautiful piece written by Vignesh on Illayaraja’s ‘Maarugo
Maarugo’ song from Vetri Vizha and I headed to comment section and this is what
I read as one of the comments,

Dear Vicky,

Long time ago, I used to play the flute in light music troupes in chennai,
though I have been fully focussed on practising carnatic music lately.

I wanted to listen to the music of the movie "Slumdog Millionaire" today to see
why it's being talked about so much. I searched and listened to it online.

It left me with a bad aftertaste. I just felt like cleansing my ears, body and
soul by listening to some Raaja music and landed in your blog.

Thanks for the wonderful analysis, sound clips. You (and Raaja) made my day.

with love,
srikanth.

I really haven’t taken such comments that have no constructive purpose
seriously and till this date I have never read or been in a single constructive
argument or debate when it comes to Raaja vs. Rahman. I don’t understand the
mind of some people, who call them to be an Illayaraja fan and who talk more
about A.R.Rahman and how bad his music is than about how great Illayaraja’s
music is. I don’t understand what is their real problem with Rahman, is it the
music itself, or its popularity.

Irrespective of who is the composer, Music has one single purpose. Is it so
difficult to understand the oneness of music? And who can better teach you the
oneness of music than Illayaraja, who has covered every possible genre of music
in his repertoire and yet makes us feel that it is all music, just Raaja’s
music? I guess if you are a fan of Illayaraja, and if you have really
understood his music and its purpose, it is so simple to accept and appreciate
anybody else’s music. If not, then you fail Illayaraja, his music hasn’t
educated you enough. (In this particular case I am so devastated that he who
commented about the music doesn’t know what background score in a movie is
meant for, and he calls himself Raaja fan)

I get as exhilarated by that worldly interlude in ‘Dil Gira Daftan’ from
Rahman’s Delhi-6 as I get in the thundering coda of ‘Om Shivo hum’ from Raaja’s
‘Naan Kadavul’. The kind of music in the songs that I compare here has nothing
in common in its sound and yet the purpose is the same. Illayaraja is a way and
A.R.Rahman is another way to attain a musical Nirvana. Everybody has the right
to choose his own way but the one who foul talk about the other ways is no
different from those extremists who in the name of religion, do things which
their religion itself doesn’t preach.

I don’t believe in religion but I believe in a God and in the same way I
believe in music and I take the best of both to pave my own way to reach its
purpose. I am both a devotee of Illayaraja and a Rahmaniac and I find it
perfectly normal and rational to be so. And some call it incomprehensible and
eccentric? I don’t know how to answer them because they never really explained
to me why they feel so.

When A.R.Rahman wave was spreading all over India, everyone told that
A.R.Rahman’s popularity is not because he is a genius or he has any talent but
because he borrows heavily from western music but it is the westerners who now
say that they have never heard a music score like that of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’
before. And so where did Rahman borrow all this long? Nobody seems to be
talking about this.

And what is this cry about Illayaraja deserving many International Awards and
not A.R.Rahman? These are utterly ridiculous arguments. Oscar or Golden Globe
is not given to greatest music composed by the greatest music composer of all
time from a country. Why can’t we be practical and realistic about these
awards? Raaja is contended in whatever he does in Indian films and if he gets a
chance he will definitely do it right in an international movie too, I believe
in it more than any other so called Raaja fan. And do you mean you want
Illayaraja to win an Oscar for his background score in ‘Naan Kadavul’ to prove
that he is the best background score composer in, the country? An Illayaraja
doesn’t want that because he has no intention to go global or is in no
contention with any Rahmans out there to prove his genius. Now if both
Illayaraja and A.R.Rahman were nominated for their respective scores in ‘Naan
Kadavul’ (though Raaja has slightly
overdone it in Naan Kadavul) and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, and if I say
A.R.Rahman deserves it, then I can be crucified. But that is not the case here.
I feel Illayaraja is one of the best in the world when it comes to composing
background score. When I wrote this, I was just trying to understand the impact
of the music in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and explain it to others who are
interested and who otherwise would easily oversee it. I was trying to
illustrate the life that Rahman’s vibrant music brought to a movie like
‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

[arr] What is AR Rahman's choice for the Oscar's night?

2009-02-16 Thread Vithur
What is AR Rahman's choice for the Oscar's night?

*A R Rahman has finally packed his bags for the big night. We hear that the
ace musical composer had a variety of options that his stylist Vijayeta
Kumarsuggested
him and his wife Saira to wear. Besides a Rohit
Baloutfit,
sources also claim that his bag carries a Lanvin and an Armani
Tuxand
perhaps a Sabyasachi Mukherjee creation too.
*
**
Bal has given a lean silhouette to Rahman by opting for a tapered bandhgala
and slim pants in black. To give it a red-carpet touch, Bal has made the
collar and cuffs ornate with tonal beads.

According to sources, fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has also made a
set of clothes for both Rahman and Saira. Apparently, the Kolkata-based
designer has made a Kashmiri-kantha black tone-on-tone kurta and Aligarhi
pyjamas for Rahman and a bodycon (body- contoured) kurta and an antique
dupatta for Saira.

All eyes are trained on A R Rahman's Oscar fever...will he do India proud in
a Gudda or a Sabya creation or would he reach out to a Lanvin or an Armani
Tux?

And you thought last year’s Oscar TV ratings were weak. Wait until you see this
year’s after next Sunday. Believe me, it won’t be the movies’ fault. Unlike
2007, there are actually some 2008 contenders that are
certifiable, card-carrying crowd-pleasers (“Slumdog Millionaire,” the
near-certain winner for Best Picture is beloved in a way that such
extraordinary 2007 contenders as “There Will Be Blood” and “No Country for Old
Men” could never dream of being.) But the minute the Oscar producers named Hugh
Jackman this year’s Oscar host, a unanimous cry of “what the @!*%?” was heard
from Maine to Manitoba, Nome to Naragansett.
But hey, a marginally good time may actually be in the offing. Near-certain
winner Danny Boyle
–director of “Slumdog Millionaire” –is a guy liable to say anything at any
given time, and it will be fun to watch if he does.
No matter who wins of the two major Best Actor contenders (Sean Penn, Mickey
Rourke), something unusual may be said. These, to put it mildly, are two-fisted
noncomformists.
These, to be sure, are the Underdog Oscars. Most of those with the best chances
are underdog candidates writ large. If it isn’t an audience favorite of a movie
about the bottom dogs of Mumbai, India, it’s an actor (Mickey Rourke) whose
career had already received last rites – or one whose movie (“Milk”)
represented such an underdog cause – gay America –that one of its issues was on
the losing side of the ballot in the last California election.
This annual Oscar tip sheet is now in its 36th year of fun and frivolity, which
means that there are major contenders this year (Anne Hathaway, the late Heath
Ledger) who weren’t even born when it started. Count on my usual percentage
going between .500 and .750, but bettors and Oscar pool-swimmers looking for
help, be forewarned: This year will probably be lower. I’m taking a few flyers
against all odds and logic.
Best Picture: The nomination of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” instead
of “WALL-E” or “The Dark Knight” is both an appalling tribute to the industrial
power of Paramount and Dreamworks studios and how absurd Oscar
business-as-usual can be (Jon Stewart said it most succinctly about “Benjamin
Button”: “equal parts ‘Forrest Gump’ and … his head falls to his chest with
eyes closed and he begins to snore loudly).”
No matter. The category is a neargimme. If the winner isn’t “Slumdog
Millionaire,” the ultimate crowd-pleasing underdog favorite (an oxymoron
“Slumdog” has achieved with splendid ease), it will be proof that the whole
town has gone nuts and ought to be quarantined.
Unless, of course, the surprise winner is “Milk,” which would make matters
feistily political and inflammatory and make up for passing up all those Oscars
they could have pitched at “Brokeback Mountain.”
In the year of the feel-good presidential election, “Slumdog” is the feel-good
movie candidate.
Best Actor: Everyone in it is good (even Brad Pitt was unusually subtle and
gentle in “Benjamin Button”) but it’s a two-man race: Sean Penn vs. Mickey
Rourke. Rourke would be my personal preference for “The Wrestler,” but I can’t
imagine that Hollywood disgust for the anti-gay marriage Prop 8 won’t team up
with admiration for the sudden wit and charm that the frequently charmless Sean
Penn is exhibiting at award shows to indicate anything but Penn. Pitt, Frank
Langella and Richard Jenkins, worthy as they are, are lucky to be in the
category.
Best Actress: OK, Meryl Streep won the Screen Actors Guild award for “Doubt.”
Case closed, right?
Maybe not. I can’t believe that the older-skewing Motion Picture Academy won’t
overrule SAG and opt instead for smart money choice Kate Winslet or even Anne
Hathaway, the extreme long shot. I’m taking a total flyer here and guessing
Hathaway, who was amazing in “Rachel Getting Married” and whose personal story
–a con-man boyfriend now behind bars –will win her a lot of pity votes from
older, wiser Academy types who know a thing or two about women who mate
foolishly.
Best Supporting Actor: Here is the Oscar that provides the dramatic reason for
the entire show. While it’s not 100 percent impossible Robert Downey Jr. could
overthrow Heath Ledger’s ghost, it’s certainly 99.7 percent. A posthumous Oscar
for Ledger i

I Must Say... U Discoverd The Exact Word To Express ARR's Work

He Is trendsetter ... He Create Ways... Others Just Folowed .. No One Is
creative Enough To Make Their Own Path Like ARR

"Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Industry A Guy From Chennai
Came...And Changed The Way Music Is Ever Been Made Or Been Think Of
... The Way Music Is Been Made Now...That Is His Way Of making Music..."""

This Is Going To B A Story What US ppl Is Going To tell After 20-30 Years

Hail Rahman :X

Should ARR withdraw from local awards now? (Re: [arr] Triple Filmfare nomination

2009-02-16 Thread A.R.Rajib
truly Saying ... From Many Years i Really Think ARR Doesnt Deserve To
Be Nominated In Any Category In Bolly World... The Awrads Authority
Must Give Him All The Awards At First

Best BGM

Best MD

Best Singer ( If He Sings A Single Track That year..be Sure That Is A
Legendry Song.. )

And They Can Give ARR A Lifetime Achievement Award Every Year ...As he
( Only He)..Took Bolly In World Stage... Winning Major Awards In World
Arena With Bollywoody Job... And Rocking The Whole World with Total
Bolly Number " Jai Ho"...

I Really Think ARR Should Not Be Nominated...As Every Artist's Work Is
Just nothing In Front Of His ... So It's Looks Odd If He Wins And
other Artists Just Sit At The Award Ceremony Silently...And Clapping
Their Hands For Him Evrytime ...

... Then They can Announce Who Give Good Fight With Him I Mean Who
Is The Second Prize Winner ...And that Will Be a Very Honourable Award
To Get 2nd Prize Competing With ARR... But At First They Must Give All
The Awards To Him No Artist Can Even Do Magic Like ARR So Y
Nominating ARR With These Guys...

These Guys Busy In making Money ...Not Music...Busy In Coping Others
Creativity.

If Any Other Guy Wins Inspite Of Rahman Sir... Then Just Think ...
They R Not Matured Enough To Judge ARR Works ... ARR's Work Doesnot
Make U Crazy In The First Time... It's A Slow Poison ...It Will Hunt u
For Years..

Shankar-ehsann-loy Do A Preety Decent Job In Their Every Album... But
Inspite Of Them . I Dont see Any promising Artist

What Do U Say Guys ??? :)

I got it delivered in USA itself.
I am guessing that the CD is available in India,
check some popular music stores..
The CD is primarily of Zakir Hussain and Vaidhyanathan.
In the credits, it has -Keyboards-Dilip.
Anyway, I wanted to get it for the Maestros
Zakir Hussain and Vaidhyanathan too..

Interestingly, The CD says -

Made in India, Packed 07/2008 , Price Rs. 150 only.

Looks like it is a rerelease and must be available in India easily.

Bottom line is that- cheaper or expensive, Colours CDs

are available in the market.

My Simple Valentines Gift to all A.R.Rahman Fans... - Jeans OST

Hi Guys, first of all, i would like to wish all of you a very Happy

Valentines Day. You must be wondering why did i ripped this OST, when

it has been released before. Well, i was watching the movie yesterday,

and i couldnt but be amazed by A.R.Rahman's BGM in that film, and sad

thing it was not in the previous relased Jeans OST.

I have ripped 80 Tracks in 256 VBR. Yes 80, im sorry for riping so

many because i had no heart to exclude any bits, eventhough it was

repeated 2 -3 times.

Im blown by few tracks, and i would recommend u guys to listen to the

Track 54, and a special surprise to all of you. A.R.Rahman has lent

his voice in one of the BGM, in Track 74.

A.R.Rahman has give many beautiful BGMs in this movie, which was

hidden by dialogues, esp that Track 54. Its a mind blowing BGM. And

Track 44, which has great BGM using the veenai. Do not miss it guys. A

full 80 tracks, uploaded in 2 rar. files, 40 tracks in Each.

And Oh yeah, want to share with u the movie version of Anbe Anbe and

Poovukul songs. You must be aware that Poovukul song in the movie had

" Ajooba" word sung in the lines " Poovukul Olintherukkum Panikutham

Athisayam... ". It was not there in the audio.

And the Anbe Anbe had a powerful interludes, some extra instruments

and clappings which was not in the audio version as well. Loved this

version allot, the energy in those interludes simply WILL make u move

along to it !

[arr] Karger’s Final Oscar Predictions

2009-02-16 Thread pratap

Karger’s Final Predictions
Author: Sasha Stone

12
Feb

Karger has to put out his predictions
now, before ballots have been turned in (thanks to the industrious
commenters for pointing it out).  He goes with:
Picture: Slumdog Millionaire

Director, Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire

Actor: Sean Penn, Milk

Actress: Kate Winslet, The Reader

Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight

Supporting Actress: Penélope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Original Screenplay: Dustin Lance Black, Milk

Adapted Screenplay: Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire

Animated Film: Wall-E

Foreign-Language Film: The Class

Documentary: Man On Wire

Editing: Slumdog Millionaire

Cinematography: Slumdog Millionaire

Art Direction: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Costume Design: The Duchess

Makeup: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Score: Slumdog Millionaire

Song: “Jai Ho,” Slumdog Millionaire

Visual Effects: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Sound: The Dark Knight

Sound Mixing: The Dark Knight

Short: Spielzugland (Toyland)

Animated Short: Presto

Documentary Short: The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306
As I already wrote in the comments, Karger is good, overall, with
predictions but he has to play it safe.  His role as a predictor is
simply too important to fly off in risky directions.  The only thing I
can see here that might be risky is Sean Penn v. Mickey Rourke.  Buzz
seems to be with Rourke right now.  Penn won the SAG (but was expected
to).  Buzz for The Wrestler just gets stronger.  It’s a toss up — not
unlike Julie Christie versus Marion Cotillard last year.  Cotillard won
the BAFTA, Rourke won the BAFTA.

[arr] Oscar Reflections: Original Score

2009-02-16 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Film compositions differ from other musical genres in that they are responsible
not only for evoking mood and feeling in listeners but for doing so in the
extra dimension of the moving image. If cinema can be considered a marriage
between sight and sound, then music is all the more crucial to its success;
history provides powerful examples. Take away “Lara’s Theme” and watch “Doctor
Zhivago” stripped of its sentimental beauty; omit Ennio Morricone’s score and
watch “Once Upon a Time in the West” stripped of its operatic magnificence.
This year’s Academy Award nominees elevated the human spirit in fascinating
ways. Just as James Newton Howard’s orchestral tribute to humanity in the face
of war matched its stirring subject matter in “Defiance”, so Danny Elfman’s
elegiac ode to the indefatigable human spirit did wonders for “Milk”. The
haunting allure of Alexandre Desplat’s contribution to “The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button” contrasted splendidly with A. R. Rahman’s breathless and
buoyant soundtrack for “Slumdog Millionaire”. But none of these created as
indelible of an impression on me than the score for “WALL·E”, composed by the
brilliant Thomas Newman. More than any other score this year, “WALL·E” blurred
the distinction between music and moving pictures in such a way that it proved
even space-age animation can withhold as much power as films did before the
advent of dialogue.
If there’s anything that could mute my enthusiasm for this year’s nominees,
it’s a single glaring omission. I admit that I’m still flabbergasted by “The
Dark Knight” being skipped over; of all the major film scores of 2008, Hans
Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s symphony of escalation was by far the most
interesting. It’s essentially a brilliant variation of their work on “Batman
Begins”, replete with a deep, thunderous bass and rumbling strings mimicking
unearthly sounds of anxiety and chaos. By snubbing the most boldly avant-garde
score ever written for a blockbuster film, the Academy has unfortunately played
things safe this year. Was it ever a crime for a superhero movie to have
crossover appeal? In the case of “The Dark Knight”, apparently so.
David’s Pick: “WALL·E”
Oscar Prediction: “Slumdog Millionaire”
Best Film(s) Not Nominated: “The Dark Knight”, “Speed Racer”, ”Frost/Nixon”

Today, AR Rahman is being celebrated the world over. Born Dilip Kumar, the
music great is being hailed not only nationally, but also internationally.

Millionaire, AR Rahman is now being featured in Vijay TV's Ella Pugazum Oruvan
Oruvanukae, a programme to celebrate living legends and their achievements.

The show will be a biography of the 'Mozart of Madras'. starting from his

[arr] Rahman's giant line-up

2009-02-16 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

Rahman's giant line-up

Invites international and Indian music legends to his school in Chennai

Soumyadipta Banerjee and Prithwish Ganguly

Maestros Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Amjad Ali Khan,
Shivkumar Sharma,
Kenny G and Yanni are some of the legends who, sources say, have been invited by
Oscar-nominated music composer AR Rahman to pay a visit to his music school —
the KM Music
Conservatory in Chennai. Apparently, talks are also on to try and bring down
Andrew Lloyd
Webber, who produced Rahman's musical Bombay Dreams in 2002.
An inside source says, "The programme will be held for the initiation of the
second batch of
students to the school, which was formally launched on March 12 last year. The
programme may
also mark the announcement of the school moving to a quieter environment, a
lush green
five-acre campus on the outskirts of Chennai. Right now, the school operates
from Rahman's
studio. The new campus will have spacious class rooms, a concert hall, a
recording studio and
residential accommodation for the faculty and students. The campus should be
ready by next
year-end."
Another source adds, "The aim is to get the students to interact with the
legends, so that they
get to learn something from these giants. Rahman wants all his students to have
a sound base in
music, and wants them to know different genres of music. These esteemed guests
might also
become a part of the visiting faculty of the school. They will individually
spend time with
each student and help them out with their queries," the source adds.
