[arr] "I've always admired Rahman's music " - Vivek Oberoi

2009-03-08 Thread Vithur
*After a streak of bad luck at the box office, one-time Bollywood hearthrob
Vivek Oberoi hopes to make a mark again with his much-awaited*

Asked about his reaction on the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Oberoi says
it's a great honour for Indian talent, especially for A R Rahman. "It feels
good to be recognised and when that recognition comes at the level of the
Oscars, it's a different feeling altogether. I've always admired Rahman's
music and he's given some absolutely fantastic music in some of my films as
well. Kudos to him!"

[arr] Felicitation of A.R.Rahman By The Cine Music Union

2009-03-08 Thread krishnaraj
Hi,
Has anyone recorded the program that was aired in Sun TV today?. This is the
BEST award function that A.R.Rahman could ever get. Ilaiyaraaja, MSV, Harris,
Yuvan shankar and more talking about our ARR! WOW! what a show!

When ARR spoke in the end he referred to the 'web people' (which I suppose is
us) requesting not to abuse other music directors.

2009-03-08 Thread Praveen Namburi
Hi Vishwesh,
The following are my observations,
Jai Ho at 1:56th second, suddenly the high energy of the song drops to the
lyrics of chorus.
Rehna Tu ( Delhi 6 ) from 1:31st second the lovely emotion which makes us
transform into a different world, is suddenly dropped at the specified time
line.
The same is the case with following and many more.
Sakhi ( alay payuthe in tamil ) - Snehithunda at the time line of 2:12
second( Sadhana Sargan,Srinivas )Merupukalalu ( minsare kanav in tamil ,
Prabhudeva and Kajol ) - Ooh lala... 5:10 second ( unni menon,chitra )

Thnx,

[arr] ARR got emotional during the felicitation by Cine Music Union

2009-03-08 Thread Mohamed Amin
It was a rare sight to see the stalwarts of tamil music fraternity to come on
one stage. The highlight of the show is the felicitation of Bala Murali
Krishna, MSV and Ilayaraja.

Harris Jayaraj also spoke during the felicitation in which he said that he
started to play keyboard after seeing our ARR.

One thing in the show that all musicians came down to show the solidarity and
they openly praised ARR from bottom of their heart. Many emotional speeches.
During the speech by legendary singer S. Janaki in which she mentioned about
ARR's dad. During the moment, it was first time to see ARR got emotional and he
bowed down to wipe out the tears. MSV and Ilayaraja patted him. It was like
parents patting their child. Wonderful sight. I think lot of people in the
audience also got emotional. I am sure many of the people who were watching the
show also wold have got emotional.

Carnatic Maestro Bala Murali Krishna told that he feels like a father and ARR
as his son and felt so happy within himself. It was heartening to see the
purist of carnatic music praising ARR.

Totally unmatched felicitation show and I guess no other show can be like this
in felicitating ARR.

tks with regards,
Mohamed Amin

In their maestro’s FOOTSTEPS

This group of AR Rahman fans feeds the poor every Sunday

Lakshmi Kumaraswami | TNN

For the past one year, a group of people on motorbikes have been
congregating at Kodambakkam
every Sunday. Laden with food packets, they hop off their bikes and distribute
it to anyone who
looks like they need a meal — rag pickers, sewage workers and beggars. These
good Samaritans
have one thing in common: they are all diehard fans of music maestro AR Rahman.

Last March, after meeting on an online group, some of the members — Vithur,
Uma Shankar,
Rakesh, Rasol Hanifaa and Somu — decided to do their bit for society. “Usually,
we post a
message on the site saying we’re going to meet and distribute food to the poor.
Subsequently,
many people turn up,” says Vithur. The group assembles at Shri Mahaganapathy
fast foods in
Kodambakkam and buys packed food — usually tomato or brinjal rice along with an
appalam — for
Rs 300 to Rs 500. Then they drive around the area, handing out food to the
underprivileged. “We
initially started out in Annanagar, but then decided to focus on Kodambakkam.
As Rahman lives
in the area, we feel like we’re doing a service and staying close to our
mentor,” says Uma
Shankar. Vithur adds that the students of KM Conservatory also often help out
and they end up
feeding at least 40 people.
The group is united by their love for Rahman and inspired by the AR Rahman
Fo u n d at i o n
, which works towards eradicating poverty and hunger. “His humility pushes us
to do something
good for society. This is our small contribution to a cause he supports,” says
Rakesh. On
special days like Independence Day or Rahman’s birthday, the group visits
orphanages and
distributes a special meal. They organised a similar meal on Rahman’s return to
the city after
his triumphant run at the Oscars. “Usually, when we distribute food, we don’t
mention Rahman’s
name. But this time as we gave away special sweets and food, we said ‘Ellam
pugazhum
irraivanake’ as a tribute to him,” says Vithur. He adds that the BlaaZe joined
the group when
they distributed free meals after H Sridhar, Rahman’s sound engineer, passed
away.
The group plans to continue this service as long as possible. “We would like
to expand but
with our hectic schedules this is the only way we can do it regularly,” says
Uma Shankar.
Rakesh adds that there isn’t a better feeling than seeing the happiness of the
people they
feed. “It would probably be their only meal that day. Sometimes I leave the
packets by their
side while they are asleep and when they wake up, nothing can match the look on
their faces,”
he says.

Bro Jemsheed

According to me, this is what we should be avoiding, as AR was also
stressing that in the web, there are a lot of unwanted discussions about
other MDs etc etc

Ir was talking his heart and he too was very emotional. His speech sounded
very matured like that of an elderly musician, more to say, he was
addressing AR like his very own son.

The full show was an very emotional one and I dont think anyone had any ill
feelings ( apparently no )

( This is my personal opinion, and I dont say you accept with me. This
is what I felt )

The Sun TV program was a very memorable one, as it united all musicians, and
lets keep the same vibes now and lets not get disturbed.

Thanks

[arr] "The number is a mix of Western and Punjabi bhangra, hence turning out to be a great mix"

2009-03-08 Thread Vithur
*Kylie's great, but working with Akshay nostalgic: Farah Khan*

Mumbai (IANS): Director-choreographer Farah Khan says Australian singer
Kylie Minogue was "a dream to work with" in forthcoming film "Blue", but she
was even more excited to work with Akshay Kumar after a year's gap.

The two had last come together for Farah's directorial venture "Om Shanti
Om", where Akshay was seen in a cameo as 'Khiladi Kumar'. And she didn't
miss the opportunity to work with him in the much-hyped song featuring Kylie
in director Anthony D'Souza's "Blue".

"I enjoy working with Akshay and have always had great fun shooting with
him. In 'Om Shanti Om' he was a riot and sporting enough to have consented
to do a cameo. We were in splits throughout when he came back in his
'Khiladi Kumar' image. This was a year and a half back and when we shot
again in 'Blue', it was quite nostalgic," Farah told IANS.

The ace choreographer bonded quite well with Kylie even though they were
working together for the first time.

"That's right, we hadn't interacted earlier but knew about each other's
work. She had seen 'Om Shanti Om' and was also aware about my musical
'Bombay Dreams'. Once we started working together for the 'Blue' song, we
gelled well quite quickly. She is a dream to work with," Farah said.

Farah has now become very choosy when it comes to taking up choreography
assignments ever since she donned the director's hat for "Main Hoon Na" in
2004. But she has made exceptions.

In fact, one of the songs she decided to choreograph earlier also featured
Akshay. The number was "Mast Kalandar" from the film "Heyy Babyy", which was
directed by her brother Sajid Khan. Of course, the song had her favourite
actor friend Shah Rukh kahan making an appearance too.

"It's always a great experience to work with Akshay since he is a fun-loving
guy. Moreover, he is very professional and very punctual. There were many
factors that contributed to me agreeing to work on the song and Akshay being
a part of it only helped," Farah said about accepting "Blue".

Apart from Kylie and Akshay, the much-awaited song also features Zayed Khan,
Lara Dutta and Sanjay Dutt. Composed by Oscar-winning musician A.R. Rahman,
the number has been sung by Kylie and Sonu Nigam.

"The number is a mix of Western and Punjabi bhangra, hence turning out to be
a great mix. Rahman has come up with a great tune again. To begin with,
while Kylie sings her own portion in English, Sonu Nigam brings on a Punjabi
element in the second half of the song," she explained.

"Blue" is set to release in the latter half of 2009.

Re: [arr] Bose

2009-03-08 Thread Reformed Sinner
hey anish

nice reading your thoughts on Rahman's music. I've been a member of this
group since 2004. When I joined, this group was mainly discussing the music
of Swades. I remember reading a lot of mails on the music of Bose in 2005,
about how it was badly promoted, about how the songs were badly utilized in
the movie and so on.

i suggest you should try listening to some of Rahman's Tamil numbers if
possible. There are some gems which you can hear only in Tamil (bcos they
were not reused in Hindi)

Kandukondein Kandukondein
Sangamam
Iruvar
Kizhakku Cheemayile
Duet
En Swasa Katre

and so on

and help get a repeat audience.

Shankar has a story board for his songs and normally sits with his music
director,
lyricwriter,
cameraman and art director discussing the song in detail.

This includes details like camera angle and colour of the costumes worn by
the lead artistes to match the background! In every Shankar film, there is a
signature number which is a dream song showcasing a lot of splendor, glamour
and glitz. The director has had classic hit numbers like Maya... in Indian,
Randakka... in Anniyan or Vaaji Vaaji... in Sivaji. Something similar in
style, with much more richness and grandeur, is being planned by the ace
director for Endhiran where the lead pair (Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai)
will be accompanied by nearly 1000 junior artistes, all of them wearing
silvercoloured ‘Robo’ costumes with thongs.
The song, which was recorded recently by AR Rahman, was sung by Madhushree
who also sang the popular Vaaji song in Sivaji. The song will soon be shot
on a set created by art
directorSabu

Has A R Rahman been overdoing it?

A R Rahman More Pics

The past year which spawned about a dozen Hindi and Tamil soundracks, and
the whirlwind Slumdog Millionaire experience and its culmination with the
Oscars, has taken its toll on the music
maverick
from Madras’ genius’ health. According to close friends of the composer,
since his return home after the Oscars, Rahman has been very unwell, so much
so that he had to cancel a scheduled trip to London last Friday night.

Work back home has also been suffering. Rahman was not able to complete the
song that was filmed on Sanjay Dutt
,
Kylie Minogue, Akshay Kumar and Zayed Khan in Film City for Blue. And,
reportedly, a scratch recording is being used for the shooting. Confirming
these developments, director Anthony D’Souza said, “It’s true. But what a
song! Even a scratch recording by Rahman is worth far more than the final
recording of many other composers.”

Rahman fell ill and was bed-ridden this week, thereby further putting behind
his pending assignments. “I’ve returned from LA to complete three film
assignments — Mani Ratnam’s film, Shankar’s Robot and Blue. And then I’ve to
go back to
Hollywood,”
said Rahman. He admitted that the song that Kylie Minogue danced to in
Mumbai with Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar and the rest of the cast for Blue was
actually a rough cut. “I’ll finish it soon,” he said. “I’m in Chennai for
two weeks. Then I return to LA.” The question is, what happens to the
pending assignments back home?

[arr] Cine Musicians felicitation function

2009-03-08 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
This program telecasted today in sun tv...was just amazing..the best one..It
was really an emotional one..I am sure Rahman would agree that there is no
bigger honour or pride than your own people honouring and showing their love
for you...It's things like these that give a greatest sense of
satisfaction..Rahman's speech at the end was a perfect tribute to the senior
musicans of the Industry, such is his humility, he said that getting all these
awards were not his achievements alone, but god's decision to collect them on
their behalf..

>From a fan's perspective..We couldn’t have asked for a better show than this..

In their maestro’s FOOTSTEPS

This group of AR Rahman fans feeds the poor every Sunday

Lakshmi Kumaraswami | TNN

For the past one year, a group of people on motorbikes have been congregating
at Kodambakkam
every Sunday. Laden with food packets, they hop off their bikes and distribute
it to anyone who
looks like they need a meal — rag pickers, sewage workers and beggars. These
good Samaritans
have one thing in common: they are all diehard fans of music maestro AR Rahman.

Last March, after meeting on an online group, some of the members — Vithur, Uma
Shankar,
Rakesh, Rasol Hanifaa and Somu — decided to do their bit for society. “Usually,
we post a
message on the site saying we’re going to meet and distribute food to the poor.
The group is united by their love for Rahman and inspired by the AR Rahman Fo u
n d at i o n
, which works towards eradicating poverty and hunger. “His humility pushes us
to do something
good for society. This is our small contribution to a cause he supports,” says
Rakesh. On
special days like Independence Day or Rahman’s birthday, the group visits
orphanages and
distributes a special meal. They organised a similar meal on Rahman’s return to
the city after
his triumphant run at the Oscars. “Usually, when we distribute food, we don’t
mention Rahman’s
name. But this time as we gave away special sweets and food, we said ‘Ellam
pugazhum
irraivanake’ as a tribute to him,” says Vithur. He adds that the BlaaZe joined
the group when
they distributed free meals after H Sridhar, Rahman’s sound engineer, passed
away.
The group plans to continue this service as long as possible. “We would like to
expand but
with our hectic schedules this is the only way we can do it regularly,” says
Uma Shankar.
Rakesh adds that there isn’t a better feeling than seeing the happiness of the
people they
feed. “It would probably be their only meal that day. Sometimes I leave the
packets by their
side while they are asleep and when they wake up, nothing can match the look on
their faces,”
he says.

[arr] Couldn't control my tears seeing ARR's reaction

2009-03-08 Thread Sath Murthy
Wow.. It was great function. Thanks to SA Rajkumar and other officials from the
cine music artist union.

When S Janaki spoke about ARR's father Mr. Sekhar, camera panned to ARR and we
all can clearly see that ARR wiping his tears of his eyes.. I couldn't control
my tears too. I felt very heavy at my heart as if something like a ball got
struck at my throat.I know for sure that will be the case for each and everyone
who watched the telecast.

Everyone heaped praises on ARR IR speech was good, but it was too confusing
and i had a feeling that he was not open about a lot of things (same like
Kamal). He mentioned that "what awards will do without composers?" What does he
really mean by that? I felt that he talked more about Balamuralikrishna than
ARR

But overall it was an excellent function.

I want to abide by those words of ARR "Don't abuse anyone". So i rest my case
here.

Thanks
Sath Murthy.

Vijay / Gopal,

Can this message be passed on to the concerned, Please?

I came across all the songs of connections by ARR in youtube. The quality is
excellent. I also found few sites carrying those online to listen or download.

It is better to release Connections Album in CD format officially so that the
piracy can be controlled. We all fans will buy the original for sure, instead
of listening them through other sources. Not everyone will have or having the
new Nokia phones that carry those songs exclusively.

Thanks

[arr] If it’s the dance floor, it better be Jai H o

2009-03-08 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1090309/jsp/calcutta/story_10644213.jsp

If it’s the dance floor, it better be Jai Ho- City’s party crowd hooked to
Slumdog anthem after string of awards abroad

POULOMI BANERJEE

A still from the Jai Ho number in Slumdog Millionaire
Slumdog anthem Jai Ho may be the Congress’ prized poll property — and CPM
candidate Md Salim’s chosen words for wall graffiti — but its rightful owner is
the dance floor, according to Calcutta’s hottest DJs.
The party crowd hasn’t stopped jiving to Jai Ho ever since the A.R. Rahman tune
scored a hat-trick of victories at the Golden Globes, Bafta and the Oscars. “I
was playing Jai Ho at a party on the night of the Oscars and the crowd was so
much into it that you could have thought it was the national anthem,” recalls
DJ Ravi.
Hardcore Rahman fans might argue that the soft-spoken composer has created far
better tracks, but Jai Ho is hard to beat on current form. “You can’t argue
with its success. Jai Ho first became popular abroad but it is now the hottest
dance floor track everywhere. We play it a couple of times every night on
request,” says DJ Vishal of the Park Street nightspot Tantra.
So, does Jai Ho owe its popularity on the dance floor to the accolades it has
earned abroad rather than musical merit?
“There is no doubt that the Oscar victory has fuelled the demand for Jai Ho but
Rahman has always been hugely popular and anything he creates is a potential
winner,” says DJ Girish of Shisha, the lounge bar on Camac Street.
The disc spinner thinks Jai Ho will remain the tune of the season, including
the Holi week.
“I usually play Bollywood tracks with a folksy feel during Holi. Rang Barse
(from Silsila) is the all-time favourite. Party people prefer tracks with
energy and Jai Ho fits the bill both in terms of vibrancy and mood,” explains
DJ Girish. DJ Vicky, who will be playing at a private party on Holi, agrees.
“Jai Ho is one of the most-requested songs and I am sure people would want to
hear it on Holi, too,” he says.
Some DJs have come up with remixed versions of the song. “The original song
does not quite suit the dance floor. So I have done a remixed version,” says
Ravi.
But Vishal will blare it out just the way it is. “I agree it is not the perfect
tune for the dance floor but I am against remixing this track,” he says.
Apart from Oscar mania, what has worked for Jai Ho is its theme. “The song is
all about the victory of right over wrong, of overcoming the odds. The youth
can identify with this, though I must say that the song’s popularity cuts
across all age groups,” says Ravi.
If Jai Ho has any competition, it is from other Rahman favourites like
Masakalli from the Delhi-6 soundtrack. “Genda phool is also popular and will be
good for Holi,” says Girish

At your door I bow, I perish, I flourish,
Repair my fortunes, oh my Lord
Whoever came to your door, and bow to you,

By raising my head, I had many things in desire
A lot of dreams and attempts to fulfill
But when you appear face to face
I wasn't able to look you in the eye

> *Are the press reports true - that you did not go to the ceremony because
> there were procedural glitches in your travel plans?*
> Well, the real reason was my shoulder - I injured it while swinging my arm
> during tennis and I am still under treatment. I have just returned from a
> session with my physiotherapist (the interview happened three days after the
> Academy Awards). It was terribly painful, and though I may have managed with
> medicines I thought that if I go there I should be in top health.
> Yes, I am terribly sorry and am upset especially for my daughter Meghna and
> son-in-law Govind who were really looking forward to being there that
> evening. Rahman himself is pretty upset - he complained, “I am left alone!”
> so let me say “Sorry” to him through the columns of Screen! And I agree that
> the best thing about this award is that it is for a song composed by him. I
> would even say that this award was possible only because of Rahman.
>
> *We would like to know how Jai ho was conceived and created.*
> We made Jai ho like any other song, in the way Rahman works every time. He
> usually offers one or two compositions for each situation, with ideas and
> suggstions thrown across on the angles of the situation. It was a song of
> victory after a struggle - the struggle of romance and love. So as usual, I
> wrote the words and phrases starting with the obvious phase Jai ho. Then
> Sukhwinder Singh, who was present, sang the line I wrote and it was he and
> his exquisite voice that actually created the magic. Rahman and I have won
> the Oscar but Sukhwinder truly deserves mention for the song as it has
> finally turned out.
>
> *Despite being for a foreign film, did you imagine the song reaching this
> far?*
> How could I? (Smiles) Rahman never told me that it was for a non-Indian
> film. When I asked him, he was very vague and that did make me very
> suspicious. But that’s something I think about when I look back. Because we
> made it in the same normal way in which we have been working all these
> years. Only this time the director wasn’t around.
>
> *Rahman isn’t conversant with much Hindi and Urdu. So could you describe
> this way of working?*
> Rahman’s compositions are a challenge - because he is innovative and
> unconventional. His music talks to you and work becomes easy. In the past
> too, I have written my songs after fixing key phrases first, like Chal
> chhaiyya chhaiyya (Dil Se...) and O humdum suniyo re (Saathiya). Besides
> inspiring me with his composition, Rahman is such a good soul that I never
> feel that I am at work. The atmosphere is very conducive to creativity with
> ideas being bounced across. There is so much give-and-take and actual
> exchanges of thoughts and images. And Rahman is making a lot of effort at
> his Hindi now and is improving - like he sent me this message after getting
> his awards that said, “Shukriya, huzoor!”
>
> *Do you recollect your first meeting with Rahman?*
> It’s been 11 years since Dil Se...happened. I first met him at his old
> studio and whether there or at his current studio, the atmosphere is very
> pious. You have seen how Bal Krishna looks - dark and with long tresses and
> Rahman reminded me in those days of some chhota bhagwan with that child-like
> innocence. Now of course he keeps his hair short, but the inn
