Sangamam songs are out of the world. I think its a project which AR did for
expressing his passion for Classical Folk Music, and this also proved to the
world that he can do Classical Folk Music.

My favourites are

1. Mazhai Thulai
2. Varaha Nadigarrai

and all the songs.

The BGMs also rock.

Thanks Chord, and do write more about his Tamil AlbumsI love these posts

I had shared this earlier here...

When i was in chennai back in 2005, i met an american lady that came down to
train us "Global communication skills".
She had a bunch of ARR songs and said that "Varaga nadhikara Oram" is her
morning wake up tune that she gets so fresh in the morning waking up to that
song...

Hearing this, i gave her a long list of AR albums and address to music world
in spencer plaza :-)

There are lots of brilliant songs that AR has never used in concerts.
but I think Yuhin Chala was a perfect one for Concerts.
You have 2 male singers singing , lots of Guitar, Bass.
High energy song.. It would have been wonderful if this song was used in any of
his concerts.
Just my opinion.

This is one album more than any other which makes me wish that AR does more
of carnatic classical based compositions in the future.
Each song, each note in this album is par excellence.

My personal favorites would be both Varaaga and Mazhai Thuli (MSV,
Hariharan)the beats as you said are truly infectious and make for an
absolute joyride ...

has added more confusion in people's mind. Refer only the original website of
Rahman, other sources are just fake. Its not only with Tasveer even Ashutosh
Gowriker's next "What's your Rashee?" has included Rahman has MD but in
reality he is not. TASVEER has been composed by PRITAM.

Nope, its not Rahman. Cant you distinguish between Bohemia and 'your' ARR's
composition? lol (jk)

8x10's music is by Bohemia, Salim Sulaiman & Neeraj Sridhar.

[arr] Varaaga Nadhikarai

2009-03-16 Thread Chord
I have been really concentrating more on Rahman's Tamil works of late and have
been so enjoying revisiting soundtracks I haven't heard in a while.

I need to express my feelings about this song from Sangamam, which really
impresses both intellectually and emotionally. The way Shankar M has sung this
song is absolutely divine. The infectious dholak rhythm with the Mast Qalandar
like melody (not at all copied) makes this song my very favorite from Sangamam.

I love it when the second interlude adds this incredibly infectious ghungru
rhythm, very similar in pattern to the Taal Se Taal mila, Hai Na, Chale Chalo
Mitwa ghungru tracks, taken away, then back again for the final portion of the
song. Just pure magic.

I truly with Shankar M would sing for ARR again.

Heard that ARR said that Mani's next would be kind of similar to the style of
Sangamam (folk, semi classical), so we can really look forward to that.

Am curious to know what everyone's favorite song from Sangamam is.

very rightly said. Rasiya is absolutely awesome. one of my all time favorites.
what a wonderful melody and great vocals by Richa. it alone makes MP a great
album.

though i did not like Vari vari. Kavita has always been my favorite but here
there is too much shrillness in her voice.

Hey Anish,

I respect your opinions. We don't have to agree about our favorites. Rahman's
collection of albums are as varied as the colors and hues on a rainbow. We
will each have our favorite color and hue or shade and that's fine. It's what
makes life excitingto have different viewpoints and opinions. I say, let's
just agree to disagree! It's not worth warring over different opinions and
nobody is going to succeed in changing someone's opinions. Good to hear from
you!

You are entitiled to your opinion. But as music lovers, we suggest
that give time to this album.let it grow on you.
Yes this is not an album that you like on the first go and that is why
it is not so successful commercially, but it is a masterpiece!!

Anthems in this album

Sengaathi -- A rustic Folk singer T.K.Kala has rendered a heart wrenching patho
song!! An equally loveable track!!!

Eachi Elamicchhhi is having one of  the ARR's career best instrumentation with
haunting rendition!!!

One of ARR's most beautiful albums. Just oozing with melody and soul and with
good experimentation too. My favorites are Senkatte, Karisal Tharisil, Chotta
Chotta, Oru Poiyavathu, and Eechi Elumichi (mayo mayojust awesome!).

A.R. Rahman features in Akon's music video 'Beautiful' [image: Click here to

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, March 16, 2009 - 16:36 IST [image: A R
Rahman] Double Oscar winner A.R.Rahman is known to be a very shy and
introvert kind of a person. Hence, it took us by surprise when we saw Rahman
feature in a video of American hip-hop singer Akon.

The video called '*Beautiful*' features Rahman for just a couple of seconds.
The Music Maestro is seen posing with a bevy of models and smiling in his
trademark coy way. The video also features American pop singer Colby O'Donis
and Canadian hip hop artist Kardinal Offishall

After the double Oscar triumph, one must say Rahman is indeed making his
presence felt on the international music arena slowly and steadily.

Using a bass guitar in this genre was the most innovative idea!!

Its the first time i guess, when some one has thought about using a Bass Guitar
in a Mujra!

It makes the song peppy..and the composition is a classic!!!

Loved the way how ARR has used the voice of Reena Bhardwaj as chorus..Kavitha
krishnamurthy is at her best too...

The other song which is a gem in this album is "Rasiya"... It
transports me to a different world! I wonder if anyone else in this universe
can sing the same song as Richa Sharma sang!!!
I just love the attitude of this song..
Sarangi notes are divine...sets a perfect stage for the stanza to start...and
stanza doesnt dissapoint either!!!

hi guys..

This is just an observation i made to myself.. i dont know how many of you have
done this...

Whenever i read a review of songs of Rahman, or any article about rahman
songs.. i suddenly open my itunes and start listening to that song while
reading about it.. ( in case my itunes is not open, which is rare... hehe )

It happened with me all times.. whenever a soundtract comes and people review
it song by song.. i just open itunes and listen or just automatically switch to
that song if i am listening some other songs...

Did any of you guys is having this syndrome.. ? hehe.. well

Well i am a rahmaniac.. well does it mean i am become totally rahmaniac.. ? :)
beyond the point of no return.. :) if yes.. then i like it.

[arr] Rashid Ali's lucky break

2009-03-16 Thread Vithur
*Rashid Ali's lucky break*

Rashid Ali, of 'Aditi' fame, wasn't even supposed to sing the song that's
made him a big star today.

In an interview to a local website, he said that he was only supposed to
play guitar on the song. He said, "I was initially just supposed to play the
guitar portions of the song. Then Rahman asked me to record the vocals and I
just sang it. It all got done in one evening in Chennai couple of years
back. I didn't even hear the end product for a long while."

Ali says that Rahman's decision to get him to sing the song was quite
instant. He says, "I've known A.R. Rahman for the past 7 years now. I've
done a few concerts with him. I was in India when A.R. thought why not get
Rashid to sing this song. Rahman is a guy who makes decisions on impulse and
I must add that he has an amazing gut feel about things.” Rashid Ali can now
be heard on the soundtracks of Blue and Jaane Kahan Se Aayee Hai.

Well, ARR is unique, no one can compare to him. If you think that Doli Saja Ke
Rakhna is a disaster, how can you explain my astonishment on him at the first
time I listened to Ta Ram Pum from Doli Saja Ke Rakhna? Once I listened to
that, my heart said, this guy (the composer) is very much different... here's
ARR, he is different. And about One 2 Ka 4, the two are gorgeous, Sona Nahin Na
Sahih and Khamoshiya Gunguna Ne Lagi... and also Mangal Pandey, it is
awesome... and with greatest singers also. But people can have their opinion.
So, AR is the greatest...

first i would also like to add that though my father did not find it special
(in one hearing), it was/is the absolute favorite of my whole family, including
my mother, wife and younger siblings. so i must say there is something in it
which most of the people are liking. i can agree that part of the reason may be
that "muslim connection" you mentioned, but only PART of the reason not THE
reason. and about "weightage due to ARR composition", i don't agree as like my
family most of the people i have seen loving it don't have much to do with
music or ARR.

> Firstly, the song has some 1:20 initial alaaps that are quire boring to say
> and kill the entire beauty of song that comes after that.

for me those initial parts are absolute integral to the song, the very beauty
of the song. also i truly love when he keeps singing "khawaja jee, kawaja
jee..." in the beginning and also at the end of song.

> Those "ya khwaja ji, moinuddin, gareeb nawaz" are without any lyrical or

same as above.

> But then the song starts with lovely music BUT, BUT BUT poor lyrics.

absolutely agree with you. lyrics are one of the biggest culprits in this case
(but only in some places, not all) other being the pronunciation (sadly by our
man).

i have to disagree big time. i found them very meaningful, devotional and
effective. there is certain beauty in these simple but very meaningful words.

> pronunciations are also not clear. that bebaso ki taqdeer tu ne hai sanwari,

rightly said. and especially "taqdeer" sounds like "takhti" (slate) or taqdi.
ARR should have emphasized more on pronunciation.

> And then "Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha" has noor pronounced

i fully agree.

i don't agree. i must say these lines carry much weight and importance. this is
just a way to express how much respected he is. and btw how we learn to respect
someone in the first place? i think we learn it by knowing the respected person
(what he did that he should be respected) as well as by seeing other respected
persons respecting that person.

> and then "tu hai khwaja - rutaba hai pyara" chahne se tujhko mustafa ko

i fully agree here. this was the most difficult part. it was not clear to me
what he says until i read the lyrics on booklet.

> and lastly that "hai mere peer ka sadqa, tera daman hai thama," tali hai bala
> hamari, chhaya hai khumar tera

especially "tali har bala" was never clear to me, never, until i read the
lyrics. boss pronounced it very poorly.

> I don't get what exactly is the concept. No rhyming, no poetry, just some

can only agree about the lyrics and pronunciation. besides that for me rhyming
is perfect and singing by ARR is full of soul and spirituality.

> I would say that ARR's voice is also not as sweet enough as he is famed for,
> there is a rare shrillness, a hollow in ARR's voice

i think his voice suited very well to the song and in fact to all of songs he
has sing. i don't feel any shrillness in his voice.

sorry but i lost you here. did not get how it sounds as "personal" or "poor

GM seems to be starting new projects every week. Now he started another film

VTV sometime soon. Whats happening with him? So many projects at the same

I guess that ARR will not be part of those future projects of GM as he is doing
more quickies now a days.

[arr] 100 Best of Rahman - Compilation rules ! Please add !

>From all the Rahman songs I have, I regularly prepare a Play-List /
>compilation of BEST of RAHMAN for my car MP3 player. Normally one VCD stores
>around 110 to 120 songs assuming a 640MB storage capacity.

I do the play-lists based on following rule, Those who are interested to expand
the thread, can add a few practical parameters to refine the final selection of
songs.

Rules >
1. Minimum one song from each movie has to be included > Fiza has only one
song, but a good one, so no harm in taking it in each compilation.
2. Since ROJA was ARR's first movie and within that "Dil Hai Chotaa Sa" ( or
Chinna Chinna Aasai - in Tamil ) was the first song to be heard in that movie,
hence this HAS to be part of every compilation !
3. Movies first released in Tamil should get preference in Tamil compilation (
Jeans, Minsar Kannavu, Kadhalan etc ). After selecting original scores in that
language, then only the dubbed versions can be included next( Desam, Taalam
etc ).
4. Instrumental versions can be made into independent play-list so don't add
these into vocal play-list. Same goes for Non-Film albums.
5. Max number of songs per play-list = 100 !

AR can sue them, but I don't think he wishes to do so, he can may be send a
message across to the producers, just to let them know of what's happening.

But, do they use these BGM's with their own music changes/inputs or is it a
blatant copy+paste?!

I was having doubt on date, because the concert manager Mr. Deepak himself says
that Kerala Concert is scheduled on May to Indian Express, but venue change is
a big surprise.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is ‘Jai Ho... Kozhikode’. The mother of all live shows,
A.R. Rahman Live, the maestro’s first live programme after winning double
Oscars at the 81st Academy awards, will now be staged not at the
Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium here as was earlier planned, but at the
Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode.

The programme has also been postponed from April 14 to May 3. Since April 14
was just two days prior to the polling day in the State, there was a
realisation that it would have been difficult for the police to provide
adequate security cover for the country’s most popular musician. The show is
organised by Keraleeyam - Global Kerala Initiative to raise funds for
HIV-affected children.

For Thiruvananthapuram, however, the euphoria has been punctured.

Expectations had reached a crescendo when a two-member team in charge of the
technical and production aspects of the Rahman show landed in the city in the
middle of February on a one-day recce mission.

The team visited the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, the main stage where Rahman
was supposed to perform live. They had inspected the venue, the ground and the
natural acoustics and were generally satisfied.

It is the capacity of the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium that has now blasted
the capital city’s chances to host the show. Its total capacity, gallery and
the chairs included, is not more than 35,000. In the case of the Corporation
Stadium in Kozhikode, it is nearly 70,000. What’s more, the Corporation Stadium
is fully covered and has efficient flood lights.

To make up for the low capacity of Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, the
organisers had even thought of arranging live digital projection of the show in
two other stadiums in the city. Even the combined capacity, it is said, could
not have matched that of Kozhikode.

But the crucial factor that led to the choice of Kozhikode over
Thiruvananthapuram was the former’s proximity to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. If
the show is held in Kozhikode, the audience can have a mix of people from most
of the South Indian states. Kozhikode is easily accessible to those in big
cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, Bangalore and Mangalore.

A.R. Rahman, it is learnt, wants his show to be accessible to the largest
number of people. The show is said to be the Madras Mozart’s only show in the
country before the start of his second world tour. This means he will not be
able to perform in any of the Indian cities for at least five years.

The team that had visited the city in February had given an inkling of the
kind of show A.R. Rahman Live would be. ``We don’t know what Rahman has in
mind, this is the first show after the Oscars. He would definitely want to give
this show a completely new feel, something that has never been experienced
before. He might even have a unique theme for the show. It’s Rahman, anything
is possible,’’ Shailesh, who was in charge of production, said.

``Normally, a Rahman show will have ten big singers and 40-odd musicians.
However, for this show, we feel it might be bigger. We will get a clear idea
after we meet the man himself,’’ he added.

Very true on Rasiya. Richa Sharma's vocals are so intoxicating and Rahman
wisely lets her lead with minimal orchestration.
