2009-10-03 Thread Jahanzeb
thanks for sharing.

BIG SURPRISES. first, i was expecting more classic type of music in Raavan.
second, song is only okay, nothing special. i was expecting "blown away" type
of music for Raavan. third, this voice doesn't sound like Aishwariya's. next,
voice is okay but nothing special. some other singer could have done better
justice. wonder why boss thought she should sing it.

You don't have to reply to every tom, dick & harry who says something negative
about AR or his music. Some people never learn or understand or change... so
sometimes it's best to just ignore them & move on.

If someone puts their thoughts in sensible enough way, then you can reply to
those coz you at least know that they are serious enough to gather their
thoughts & put it here properly. But about these "one line mailers", I think
it's best to press Delete button & move on...

What is the option? We can't really let someone saying bad things about boss'

Aishwarya does NOT have a twitter profile, it is a fake that merely reposts the
latest news related to Aish on the profile in the guise of 'real life' tweets.
Aishwarya herself has confirmed this.

This should put an end to any doubts regarding authenticity of ARR related
news/songs posted on that profile.

What is the option? We can't really let someone saying bad things about boss'

When are we going to learn to neglect these "one line negative mail attention

trying to knock some senses into him/her, trying to explain the same stuff

So just try to think about this next time...

Gayathri,

You hit it spot on! Exactly my thoughts too. ARR moves forward, not
backwards. It's ok to have your favorites, but we must not confuse nostalgia
with quality either.

Kawaali in Kahna hi kya vs Chaand Sifarish (Re: [arr] Re: Blue and some recent albums of ARR lacking soul)

2009-10-03 Thread V S Rawat
"I feel that this quality of ARR's i.e bringing in different flavour to his
songs and thinking out of the box is what sets him apart from others."

Well said, ma'm.

Indeed. That is the essence of ARR. I still remember the goose pimples I used
to get from Bombay's Kahna Hi kya heaing the kawaali used in such an innovative
soothing way. And that was the beginning. Boss has given many such new combo.

Btw, kawaali as a background mix brings "Chaand Sifarish" of Fanaa to my mind,
that was a recent song by Jatin Lalit that has similar kawaali type of effect
in that subhan allaah. The song is indeed pleasant but it wouldn't match even a
bit of the magic that ARR had created in Kahna hi kya, so it has been some
13-14 years after Kahna Hi kya that no other MD has been able to match what ARR
did then.

very true. i was also reluctant before but then i grabbed all his tamil
discography (yep i downloaded it. how else would i have got it here in
Denmark?) and learned how incomplete i was without listening to his tamil
albums. language isn't a barrier at all when it comes to music. i don't
understand a word but enjoyed it 100% and in some cases even felt that tamil
words gels even better with the music and also they sound too good too.

2009-10-03 Thread ravi

Some post of this kind is seen often which in turn are without soul and it
takes several posts to find the sole meaning.

If spoken spiritually, Soul is in everybody, its the mindset that decides to be
good or bad.
To expect Symphonic and melodic or a methodical music on a just commercial
music is not correct. Or had the director asked for such a song AR would have
never left any stone unturned to do it.
And dont tell that there isn't any such song in Blue either. Listen to the song
sung by Javed Ali.

Re: [arr] [semi ARR] Song Location of Snehidhane...

2009-10-03 Thread ravi
I think this was shot in Orisa some shots make me remember the shots from the
location where the Euphoria (Indian Band) Song Dhoom Pichak was picturized. The
temple which has the steps submerged in water. I may be wrong though.
Adding to this MR has an obsession to the place Melukote near Mandya/Mysore
(Karnataka) where atleast one song will have a shot of the 2 vertical stone
towers remember rasiyya kaiyya thattu (Thalapathi, though shot ), Veerapandi
kottayile (Thiruda Thiruda), Barso re again has the same place and many songs
as well. I don't know why MR is always uses this place though for a single
glimpse. But its surprising as well.
Coming to Athirapally the same location was used by MR in Oru daiva thanda
poove (male version) in Kannattil Muttamittal, featuring it as Sri Lanka.

[arr] Rahman, SRK, Sania to be ’10 Games star cas t?

2009-10-03 Thread Sreekrishnan R
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/ET-Cetera/Rahman-SRK-Sania-to-be-10-Games-star-cast/articleshow/5084171.cms

NEW DELHI: With the countdown for the Commonwealth Games-2010 having
begun, the organisers are trying to rope in celebrities from different
walks of life to promote the mega event.

The star cast has been drawn by the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth
Games. Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan
,
Preity Zinta, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif are set to be
approached by the Organising Committee (OC) to showcase the
international event to be held in the Capital in October next year.

Others
on the list include Oscar winning musician A R Rahman, actors Rahul
Bose, Nana Patekar and John Abraham, lyricist Javed Akhtar, classical
instrumental musician Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and tabla maestro Zakir
Hussain. The stars may bring some cheer to the OC, which is under fire
from the Commonwealth Games Federation chief who has questioned its
capability to manage the prestigious event.

Sports personalities—Sania Mirza, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Saina
Nehwal , Vijender Kumar, Abhinav Bindra, Raghvendra Rathore, Dhanraj
Pillai, Jeev Milkha Singh and Baichung Bhutia — have also been
shortlisted as the likely brand ambassadors for the sporting event.

Interestingly,
present day cricketers are missing from the list, but sources said
former cricketers have been approached to promote the event.

Sources
said that the OC has already sent letters to some of the prominent
sportspersons , actors, musicians and media personalities requesting
them to promote the event.

In the media category, the organizers
have shortlisted Bennett, Coleman & Company Ltd managing director
Vineet Jain, chairperson and editorial director of HT Media Shobhana
Bhartia, president and chairman of NDTV group Prannoy Roy, admen
Prasoon Joshi and Piyush Pandey and wildlife filmmaker Mike Pandey.

OC
sources said the brand ambassadors will promote the event but will not
be paid anything for doing so. They will participate in the opening and
closing ceremonies in addition to promoting the event in the run-up to
the Games. Officials , however, pointed out that the list is yet to be

"the media coverage, specially that from outside India"

That was unheard of earlier. Now, foreign media is reviewing bollywood music
albums - our man's SDM milestone has made that possible.

So, I would not worry even if the initial reviews by foreign media are adverse,
at least they are talking about Indian music now.

Haha.very true, Ravi, it's just a repeating pattern, nothing else! If
Blue's music is not celebrated now, it will be over time minus hype and

Re: [arr] Blue and some recent albums of ARR lacking soul

2009-10-03 Thread ravikirana
Are we not quite used to the negative comments when an album is released?

Out of curiosity, I googled old reviews of albums like Saathiya, Guru, Rang De
Basanti, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, (all these films have received filmfare awards
for best music)... and no surprises at the kind of reviews they got at that
time! In fact some reviewers have given 2/5 rating for JTYJN! Critics have gone
to the extent of stating that there are only 2 songs worth listening in RDB
(lol)

Why just critics - even if we search old messages on this group when an album
is released, the result is no different...

A few months down the line, we all will be in absolute love with these
allegedly "soul-less" albums.

In fact, a couple of weeks back, I picked up the CD of Mangal Pandey, and
started listening to it... and discovered that its a musical genius!!! So am
not worried at all...

Ravi.

Re: [arr] Re: Blue and some recent albums of ARR lacking soul

2009-10-03 Thread Gayathri Chandrakasan
I remember watching an interview of ARR with actor Vivek...it was just after
the Oscars. ARR in answering one of the questions posed to him, said that he
loves to compose songs using a particular raaga but the problem he faces is
that the particular song ends up sounding similar to a song composed
earlier. To avoid that, he began to use ragas that are not usually used to
compose for a particular situation...he gave Hai Raama of Rangeela as an
example by which a seductive song was composed using a classical carnatic
raaga.

Probably for the same reasons, ARR has decided to opt for hindustani and ghazal
in tamil songs as opposed to the carnatic raagas used by most MDs here. In
fact, I feel that this quality of ARR's i.e bringing in different flavour to
his songs and thinking out of the box is what sets him apart from others.

But whatever said and done, the usage of Northern classical does not mean that
ARR has lost his 90's touches. He never lost his touches...he has only
developed his music to a new level. When most MDs sit and compose a song in a
customary manner, ARR doesn't even stick to what he created. He keeps creating
new genres in music and moves forward.

But the problem here is that some listeners (his fans included) only tend to
think his 90's songs as magical and amazing...hence the uses of words such as
"he lost his touch", "there's no longer soul in his songs" etc. But come to
think of it, how long do you want him to sit and compose songs like Kadhal
rojave and Minnale? Don't get me wrong, I love these songs. I truly believe
these songs are amazing and stunning numbers, but so do songs like Munbe Vaa
and Newyork Nagaram.

It's kinda distressing that after all the development and changes ARR has
painfully brought to the Indian music, there are still some who want him to
stay to where he was 17 years ago.

lately, in the hub i chat often, i had an opportunity to chat this gentleman
who knows carnatic music. i always had a doubt that these days A.R.Rahman
doesnt use carnatic raag and such like those days during 90s annd he too
confirmed it. He said nowdays ARR hardly uses carnatic tunes/raagams and such.
It could be this that nowdays some fans say he has lost his 90s touch coz he
hardly uses carnatic tunes. He used to use carnatic flavors for his Hindi
tracks as well. He said Marudhani and Sahana had heavy North flavors. Maybe
some music experts here like swaps can double confirm with us? I guess thats
why some fans here say his songs doenst have soul becoz of this?

Re: [arr] any 'Audiophiles' on this group?

2009-10-03 Thread niyant_dalal
wiredbeats, thanks, that was v detailed. What I liked the most was the
10 reference tracks. This could infact be a separate thread -- digging
out AR's reference tracks (and other composer's in B'wood).
kaissiom, thanks. I'd like to add the AKG K700 to your list. They're
rated as the 'god' of reference headphones. you busted another myth --
about Monster Cable. Do you know of any other cable company that offers
good value?
suresh, you've got a nice setup there. you didn't mention what receivers
run your JBLs. also what's your source - Cd / ipod, etc?
your "speakers #1" -- you're not slamming Bose again, are you ;)
does any one use a lossless Ipod transport like the Wadia dock
? This one's damn expensive for what it does -- but it does
something very interesting (click the link to read more about it).
(audiohilics forums is what i also usually go to)

audio stuff expensive does not mean good!..there are some basic ipod
headphones for even 1000 rupees by sennheiser that are damn cool, esply
the bass response. Try it or try 'JBL reference' headphones i think it
costs 2500 rupees, an absolute stunner.

Farce. Just take any 850RMS above home theatre with auto/manual
calibration. Use manual calibration for rear right and rear left and
notch it by say 1.5 dB. treble sounds crispper then. Works for ALL
RAHMAN DISCS.
> Don't go by the size of the woofer. As long as its in a wooden box its
fine. However, don't ever push the woofer into a corner of the room. It
booms and the bass reproduction is wrong. You are looking for a rumble
not windows rattling. Move your woofer about half feet away from walls.
Test it by playing Maula Maula track from Delhi 6 ( a suble bass line
that sounds so great!!)

But the sonic range is usually very rich and if you just change your
seat it might sound better.

> I sometimes think standlone systems sound way better. When you buy a
HiFI or a mini HiFi, try and locate one with a manual EQ. This feature
is becoming quite rare and i hate it. I found a pair from Wharfedale
quite stunning. But then don't break your head!, but any neat wooden
bookshelf speakers with system of about 150 RMS will be just fine for a
small room. Like a Hostel room.

> Firstly, throw your iPOD headphones into the trash. The device works
fine, but pathetic headphones. For your regular use like running,GYMing
etc buy the Sennheiser that comes in a green box ( don't know the model
number). Costs about 1500 rupees. It takes your iPOD audio to a
different level. However, i found HD 595 Senheisser the awesomest one!
Bose also works, but dont pay that much seriously. MP3 is MP3, you wont
get some magic extra sounds and most of today's bollywood music is
compressed and fedility is missing ( this included BLUE also, sorry ...).
Blue sounds bad even in good headphones. Seriously, whats with that?

lot on listening ambiance. Mostly we live in apartments with lot of
world noises and volume issues. With this we only end up under utilizing

money in those.

[arr] Hollywood director Michael Gracey is shooting the songs for 1-800 Love - Abbas Tyrewala | Semi ARR

2009-10-03 Thread Sreekrishnan R
http://www.musicmaza.com/news-detail/Bollywood_News/-%22Hollywood-director-Michael-Gracey-is-shooting-the-songs-for-1_800-Love%22-_-Abbas-Tyrewala.html

Abbas Tyrewala is back from London after a long 40-day schedule of
1-800 Love. But the cast and crew will once again be going back to the
Queen's Land to shoot the songs with Hollywood director Michael Gracey.
Abbas is currently shooting some portions of the film in Mumbai. He
says, "After a hectic schedule in London, we started shooting in
Mumbai, with a two day break in between. The shoot in Mumbai will go on
till mid -October. We will then probably go back as soon as I get the
dates in place. The entire movie is based in London city and we have
shot one song and two are still remaining." He continues, "The song was
choreographed by Hollywood director Michael Gracey. He is superb with
his work and always wanted to do a Bollywood film. He has done an
amazing job with the songs and I am looking forward to shoot the other
remaining songs with him." Speaking about a song, he adds, "It will
have the lead pair of John and Pakhi, along with the ensemble cast
which makes it 8 of them. It has a different get up in connection to
the character. Everyone wants to see John as a hunk, but in this song
he will be in a different avatar with relation to his character." Abbas
Tyrewala has also penned the lyrics for his movie, having music of
Oscar winner music director A R Rahman. The director has also done the
lyrics for the upcoming film Blue.

[arr] Re: Blue and some recent albums of ARR lacking soul

2009-10-03 Thread Din, D, Nesh
when A.R.Rahman composed Rangeela back in those days, he didnt know a single
Hindi word. Being an ARR fan, please do not do this mistake by not listening to
his songs which is in a language u dun understand. Missing out his South Indian
albums are like missing out what built his career. Im sorry u never heard
Sangamam, Boys, Ratchagan, Iruvar, Kangalal Kaithi Sei, Parthale Paravasam,
Uzhavan, Kizhakke Cheemayile, Karuthamma, Pudhiya Mannargal, En Swase Katrea,
Thenali, Kadhal Virus, Kannathil Muttamittal, New, Ah Aah, Sivaji, Sillunu Oru
Kadhal, Ennaku 20 Unnake 18, Udhaya, Azhagiya Tamizh Magan, Pavithra,
Andhimanthirai, Kandukoindain Kandukoindain, Rhythm, Varalaaru
(Godfather),Baba, Padaiyappa and such.

Wow, missing out these albums are a big minus point in one ARR fan's life. Note
that all these albums doesnt have a Hindi dubbed. So imagine what have u
missed. Infact i recomend u to listen to the Original of the dubbed Hindi once
in Tamil like "Kadhalan, Duet, Kadhalar Dinam, Thiruda Thiruda, Muthu, Love
Birds, Minsara Kanavu, Mr. Romeo, Kadhal Desam, May Madham, Pudhiya Mugam,
Gentleman, Roja, Bombay, Indira, Jeans, Indian, Mudhalvan, Alaipayuthey, and
more. These album reflects sheer and unique magic in Tamil as it originally
composed for Tamil movies in mind.

My sincere request, Please break the language barrier! - to all the ARR fans
who only listen to one language.

2009-10-03 Thread Niven
I understand clearly your point as myself dont see CW up to level of rahman
masterpieces because its meant for a fun dance song.

My point is about the media coverage, specially that from outside India which
first priority was to target that song specifically as it was the most talked
about track in our group after the release of Blue. I will not be surprised if
they come up to criticize the sound quality of the cd too LOL ;-)

Cheers...

Anish, if you haven't listen to tamil tracks of Rahman, its not sumthing that
you missed but 75% of the magic of Boss. and if I follow your logic that dont
speaking a language means not listening to it, i wonder how Jai Ho would be as
successful as it is.

Friend, do urself a favour and as you said grab as much tamil soundtracks from
Boss as you can ASAP ;-)
