[arr] Re: Front Runner for National Awards 2010?

2010-08-03 Thread Subramanian
well, i really don't know what's the criteria for National Award for Best Music
direction. If VTV deserves a national award, then I am sure Delhi-6 deserved it
last year and Rang De Basanti deserved it the year before. There couldn't have
been a better album than Delhi-6 . In fact, I was predicting a national award
for it 100% more so because AR brought home the oscars, so as a token of
appreciation i thought the committee would give the award to him. Sadly, it did
not bag the award. The award went to a more classical music oriented album. If
classical music is what the committee is looking for, then I see no reason why
Minsaara Kanavu bagged the award and Taal failed to bag it.

but I wonder how "Irumbile Oru Idhayam" isn't catchy for some (or many)..

I've gone gaga over this song.. the last time I went crazy for a Rahman sung
funky song was 'Khalbali'.. got into a 7 time consecutive yesterday... .
listening to it as i write.. awesome.

btw, if you have an excellent sound system, this song is one to test it.

[arr] Endhiran Spellbinding Indeed....But takes time to grow!

2010-08-03 Thread yeshrao81
Whoa what a turn of things When Endhiran released, I was not impressed at
all thinking it was too much noise and no tune whatsoever...but now everything
seems to be perfectly woven and the magic is starting to slowly show up...

Ranking of songs from endhiran:

1)Pudhiya Manidha
2)Kadhal Anukkal
3)Irumbile oru
4)Kilimanjaro
5)Arima
6)Boom Boom
7)Chitti Dance

There are flashes of brilliance in each song and one cannot but get bowled over
by them...

I am loving this song. As of now, only Irumbile is still the least played

Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya- for its unbounded experimentation
Jodhaa Akbar- it had a more low-key approach then i expected (except Azeem O
Shan)
Endhiran- again, like VTV didn't expect the level of experimentation that was
there
Boys- rare for an album at that time to have so much rap..also during that
period one of the only full "youth-oriented" ARR soundtracks
Lagaan-the album took all of us back in time to the past...heard it before
knowing about the movie so was caught off guard

I , for one, (not a Rajini fan , but definitely love him) can not imagine a
Rajinikanth Movie with songs like these

- Aaromale (when Rajini's character decides to create a new business
venture)
- Fanaa (Intro song for Rajini as a playboy)
- Tu Bin Bataaye (an intimate romantic song set as Rajini finally proposes
to the heroine)

Endhiran is just perfect the way it is :-) Rahman knows best.

[arr] For those who are bashing Enthiran's music....

2010-08-03 Thread AJ
...I have a question for you (maybe this does not include anyone in this group)

Given the type of film that this is, the director, Rajinikant fans, etc., how
else would you have liked the music to have turned out? Now, I'm not asking
this question to those who have specific and intelligent criticisms of points
in this album (like sound, lyrics, etc.), but for those who are calling this
album a complete washout.

Please give us your suggestions as to how Rahman should have scored differently
given the type of movie in mind. Did you want soulful, soft, melodious numbers
like in Zubeidaa? Sufi music? Kathak music?

Please enlighten us!

My point is that if want to bash a music album completely that's tied to a
film, maybe you should direct some of your ire towards the type of movie and
the director who extracts the music from the MD and has a say as to which songs
would be allowed and not allowed. For Enthiran, Rahman had so score a type of
music that was apt for the film at hand, just like all his film albums. If the
music is not your cup of tea, say, "this music is not my taste, but maybe
others will like it", but please stop the bashing and accusing Rahman of this,
that, and everything else! He's not making private albums!!!

[arr] About my reviews...

2010-08-03 Thread AJ
Thanks everyone for reading my reviews and your kind comments. I write reviews
not expecting praise or attention...it's a hobby for me and I do it for my own
self expression and satisfaction. If anyone is patient enough to read my
reviews and write a kind comment, that is bonus to me.

My reviews tend to be long and verbose, I know that. I like to be very
descriptive about the songs, explaining what I like and why I like it, pointing
out a lot of details. I'm sorry if my reviews are not the most reader
friendly! I simply don't have time to go back and edit them and make them more
concise. Please forgive me for this.

[arr] Irumbile - To Like or not to Like?

2010-08-03 Thread AJ
This song seems to be polarizing us into two campslike its and not like
its. Some are raving about it saying it's the best song in the album. I can
see why this song is so popular simply because it's so groove oriented and
because ARR is singing it in a robotic voice. Hif ARR wasn't singing
it, would it still be as liked?

I wonder why ARR choose this song to sing. Maybe for diversity...wanted to try
his voice on another techno track besides Fannah?

Anyway, to me, the song is catchy, but that's it. Maybe if I were a teenager,
I would like it more! Us oldies (in my 30s) like more variety in a track!

dilse is already trying to be matched by other composers. [Eg: Mithoon's
song 'Mein Kaun Hoon' from Lamhaa]. And ARR is not trying to match it, coz he

it might get released in this series...

Michael Jackson's first of several posthumous albums to be released
Published: Tuesday, Aug 3, 2010, 12:39 IST

The late legendary pop singer Michael Jackson

Legendary pop singer Michael Jackson's first of the several new albums are
due for release in November 2010, almost a year and a half after the singer
died in June 2009.

The late King of Pop's posthumous album features 10 never-before-heard songs
from the King of Pop.

The album will be the first in a 10-project, seven-year deal worth 250
million dollars that Jackson estate executors signed with Sony Music bosses
in March, a spokesperson for the estate confirmed.

Jackson left behind hard drives filled with previously unreleased music,
with his former manager Frank DiLeo estimating Jackson's vaults contain more
than 100 completed and unreleased songs, including collaborations with Akon,
Will.I.Am and Ne-Yo, reports *The Daily Telegraph.*

The tracks are expected to be included in the forthcoming release, alongside
songs Jackson recorded at the peak of his career in the 1980s.

"There are a couple of songs we recorded for the Bad album that we had to
cut that are just sensational," DiLeo told *RollingStone.com.*

Re: [arr] what is mixing, mastering?

2010-08-03 Thread wiredbeats
mixing is putting all stems ( tracks like voicem, bass, synth, drums etc etc)
together so they make a coherent song and each layer dont fight for space.
Mastering is adding the final touches by taking care of the dynamics, limiters
etc

mastering also takes care of volume levels for all songs in CD compilation as
per red book standards

this is just simply put

many great engineers say a good mix of a song does not require mastering..

I beg to differ with your view points on Irumbile Oru Idhayam. Its not a
masterpiece and its not my favourite in the soundtrack, yes but it is
definitely
not noisy or weak. In my opinion, its a typical AR techno song like Yaakai
Thiri
or Shano Shano and I like the feel of it.

Trust me I hated both Yaakai Thiri and Shano Shano when I first listened to
them. Though Shano Shano just managed to become a song I liked in the
album,
Yaakai Thiri became my favourite in Aayitha Ezhuthu. Just listen to
Irumbile Oru
Idhayam a few more times. I am sure it'll grow on u.

And looks like AR has created this to satisfy one major portion of the
Rajini
fan following- Kids. I am sure kids would get addicted to this song..

Jai Ho!

Re: [arr] My notes on enthiran

2010-08-03 Thread wiredbeats
Ya. I am not saying its a bad track. Its just too ordinary. Such arrangements
were seen in the 90s by bands like 2-unlimited, Snap and few more. Later some
teen pop bands like Aqua, Abba Teens etc retained the same style with newer
sounding patterns and sequence.

May be its the scripts requirement or perhaps ( and this is what i think...)
that if rahman and his team provided a more advanced arrangement, the masses
wont understand it and give a thumbs down.

I think this because, the track NaNa from Couple's Retreat was just awesome.
The
arrangements and feel was truly global. Sounded like bands - inner circle or
Bob
Marley.

anywaysfor now i will stop with Puthiya Manitha and Kilimanjaro..

wow! nice read wiredbeats. I may have some of remixes from your website!!we
need
experts pov for Rahman album!something to learn and enjoy! btw..I cudnt get
why
you call Irumbile oru idhyam or even Fanaa a flat track. I remember shankar
saying in the audio launch that he wanted a song for bringing the emotions in
the robot. Rahman tried 3 to 4 times and came up with this finally loved by
Shankar. as you said, teh flow is being interrupted. I believe thefirst 3 tunes
might have satified music lovers but then, it doesnt works that way I guess. I
dont know its fair to compare a techno-trance album with Rahman's situational
song in endhiran. after repeated listening, Im hooked to this song, it brings a
little south music taste in it..."Kaaadhal ahzaikudho"!!. I guess I get what
you
are saying..Rahman not changing the rhythm, the whole song, knowing Rahman who
is the best bringing different moods uin the samme song! I believe there will
be
a reason for this vision in the oscar winner's mind! ;)

"I robo un kadhil I love u sollata" !!! nice. Rahman cud have avoided the
keisha
like rap in between!! but then it sounds good too!

but I wonder how "Irumbile Oru Idhayam" isn't catchy for some (or many)..

I've gone gaga over this song.. the last time I went crazy for a Rahman sung
funky song was 'Khalbali'.. got into a 7 time consecutive yesterday... .
listening to it as i write.. awesome.

btw, if you have an excellent sound system, this song is one to test it.

Dear Gopal & co,

I was wondering how these 5 songs from Raavanan will be come available.
Will this be

- In mp3 cd collections like how Shauk Hai and Tere Bina sung by Qadir ji
were released, which sadly for Europe based people like me, might be only
available in India I guess...?
- or would there be a new cd release?
- or an addition of these 5 songs onto Raavanan's album on iTunes store?

Thanks for the info, if available,
Prabhu

so many people are close with ARR and all people who worked with ARR are good,
that will not mean that he has to give them chances in every film of his..i
only
told that Blaaze has been over used by ARR, and he needs a break..If ARR uses
blaaze after 5-6 albums, it will sound fresh..from baba rap he is there with
ARR, and it has become monotnous and iritating at times with his voice. So,
ARR,
please DO NOT use blaaze for some more albums of yours...try with new ppl.so
many rappers are there in the world..we all know arr is good in exprementing
with new voices..pls, do this..

I beg to differ with your view points on Irumbile Oru Idhayam. Its not a
masterpiece and its not my favourite in the soundtrack, yes but it is
definitely not noisy or weak. In my opinion, its a typical AR techno song
like Yaakai Thiri or Shano Shano and I like the feel of it.
Trust me I hated both Yaakai Thiri and Shano Shano when I first listened
to them. Though Shano Shano just managed to become a song I liked in the
album, Yaakai Thiri became my favourite in Aayitha Ezhuthu. Just listen to
Irumbile Oru Idhayam a few more times. I am sure it'll grow on u.
And looks like AR has created this to satisfy one major portion of the
Rajini fan following- Kids. I am sure kids would get addicted to this
 song..

Re: [arr] Re: semi arr - what is your favorite quote by a musician (including AR)

2010-08-03 Thread Madhavan Rajan
That's a great collection of quotes!!! It's so nice to go back and read each
one of them...Truly appreciate your efforts...

I feel this one quote needs a special mention here -

Everything depends on your
attitude.If
you treat a jingle composition as joke, it is going to sound like one.
But if you take it seriously and work on it, concentrating on every second
of the 60 seconds, it is going to last.

I take the same attitude when composing a song. I concentrate on each
section of the song. It can be a burden, but it also brings joy when people
notice the little surprises in each song. They may hear it 10 times over and
yet discover new things in it.

Enthiran Music Review

I decided to write this review sooner than I thought due to the songs having a
more instant impact and having listened to the whole album at least 15 times
since it came out. Further time is not going to change my opinions. My comments
are only on the music, not the lyrics.

I wonder if we really understand and appreciate the difficulty of Rahman's job,
no matter how musically brilliant he is. He is human after all, and not a
robot. He has to keep in mind so many expectations and demands, esp. when you
have a leading film-maker and superstar with his own fan following….Rajinikant.
Post Oscars, the expectations for Rahman have only grown and I truly wonder how
he manages to rise to the occasion each time, whether we ourselves like an
album or not. With Shankar and Rajinikant at hand, boy, Rahman must try to keep
a lot of people happy all at once, yet creating music fitting for the movie
that's supposed to have sci fi, robo themes! If there's anyone who can do
justice to these demands, it's Rahman. The hype around the music release of
this album is one of the biggest I've seen in a while…..touted as one of the
finest films, most expensive films, etc.

Pudiya Manidha whisks us away to a land of robos and futuristic sci fi, and
man, does it ever leave a mark! One of the sleekest masterpieces Rahman has
ever come out with in my opinion, this song oozes with etherealness, groove,
punch, mystery, intrigue, and trance. This track takes me to another world
truly with Rahman's sweet touches….crystal, progressive synth sound effects,
warm ambiance, loopy synths, and the ever soothing and captivating string
arrangements. Post Khatija Rahman's soulful singing and bleating goat sounds,
the song picks up speed with rhythms and SPB's spritely singing. Notice how the
strings mimic the synth loop melody, only adding depth and character to an
already richly bestowed track. Based loosely on raaga Bhimpalas, the song takes
a soaring route during the heavenly string interlude. Beautiful choral
additions are appreciated, adding a stark spirituality and sonic texture along
with SPB's split octave singing, creating a very
balanced and satisfying bass/treble aural experience on all frequencies. This
track will likely go down as one of my favorites in ARR's entire repertoire for
the reasons outlined above and for reasons I just can't put into words, but can
only feel and experience. For a techno/trance number, it's very spiritual in
feel! A complete masterpiece from start to finish, what a way to kick off

A contrasting, more acoustic, upbeat and happier track follows as Shreya and
Vijay Prakash please us with lilting singing and joy in Kaadhal Annukal.
Rahman's use of rhythm acoustic guitar layered with the sweet accordion and
mouth organ/harmonica is extremely appealing aurally with incredible sweetness!
Beautiful interludes highlight this earthy and charming song with a
Scottish/Irish style using piccolo and accordion in the first, and a very
unconventional, out of the box mysterious and ambient synth section in the
second, showcasing ARR's brilliant creativity and craft. The second interlude
is truly outstanding as it gravitates away from the usual flowery mood and
organic sound and serves us something more electronic and spacey, but never
distracts the groove and momentum of the whole track! I just love how ARR uses
the strings so tastefully and craftily throughout the song creating a very lush
aural landscape, esp. in the end when Shreya's counter
melodic line joins in. A really sparkling track from start to finish for me
and this song just radiates freshness and innovativeness for an Indian film
song. The melody itself is very sweet with many hooks, though unconventional
for an Indian duet film song and at times hard to remember, but with repeated
exposures, I can't get this song out of me!! The whole song is beautifully
supported by a fresh, rhythmic groove that mostly unwavers alongside haunting
and unique chords and chord progressions.

Following the very techno and synth heavy first track, how beautifully
contrasting we hear a very earthy and acoustic one in the second…..truly
showcasing ARR's versatility and genius in the first 2 tracks alone!!!

The third track, Irumbile Oru, is techno to the core, but sounding like an
ordinary remix to me! Marked by some sexy grooves and female rapping along with
ARR's metallic tinged voice, this track has not yet impressed me much
musically. Maybe if I understood the lyrics, I would appreciate it more, but I
did notice how the lyrics and words seem t

but I wonder how "Irumbile Oru Idhayam" isn't catchy for some (or many)..

I've gone gaga over this song.. the last time I went crazy for a Rahman sung
funky song was 'Khalbali'.. got into a 7 time consecutive yesterday... .
listening to it as i write.. awesome.

btw, if you have an excellent sound system, this song is one to test it.

Aug 03, 2010 - 12:00 PM Sound Warriors [ 0 ]

*Top 10 People in Music*

*[image: AR Rahman]1.A R Rahman *
*Rank 2008: 1*
*What He Did:* If God ever decide to make a musical, he would hire Rahman as
the composer. So it’s a no-brainer that he’s been the numero uno in this
list for so long. In 2009, he stamped his supremacy with the fabulous score
of Delhi 6, which took us on the wings of pigeons, away from our daily hopes
and heartaches.
*Future Projects:* Shankar’s Endhiran, Abbas Tyrewala’s 1-800 Love, Imtiaz
Ali’s Rockstar and Shekhar Kapur’s Paani are on the cards as of now.
*Filmfare Tip:* We would love to hear you more, sir. Please take on more
playback assignments.
*Filmfare Awards:* 25 (14 for Hindi films)

*[image: Pritam]2.Pritam*
*Rank 2008: 4*
*What He Did: *Pritam is like a long-distance runner, someone who doesn’t
care for milestones but revels only in his running. He continued his bull
run in films like Love Aaj Kal, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Aa Dekhe Zara,
De Dana Dan, New York and Tum Mile.
*Future Projects:* Pritam remains the busiest music director in 2010 too,
with projects like Mohit Suri’s Crook, Abbas-Mustan’s Race 2, Pankaj Kapur’s
Mausam and Anees Bazmee’s No Problem in his kitty.
*Filmfare Tip:* You’ve started repeating yourself and that’s not a good
thing. Think out of the box and bring more zing to your work now.
*Filmfare Awards:* None

*[image: SEL]3.Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy*
*Rank 2008:* 2
*What They Did: *S-E-L inclusion in this list is a testimony to the fact
that you can thrive as a team despite having different styles and taste in
music. They continued to experiment with each film. Instead of going for a
signature sound, they are going for a project-oriented feel to the music.
Wake Up Sid is a case in point – good music and different from the other in
appeal and texture. Karthik Calling Karthik and London Dreams were other
highlights of 2009.
*Future Projects:* Abinay Deo’s Delhi Belly, Anees Bazmee’s It’s My Life,
Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House, Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2 and Siddharth
Malhotra’s We Are Family are some of the films they are working on.
*Filmfare Tip: *What can we say, except don’t give up experimenting and try
to be more eccentric than you guys currently are.
*Filmfare Awards:* 3

*[image: Vishal-Shekhar]4.Vishal - Shekhar*
*Rank 2008: *3
*What They Did:* They may have taken a hiatus doing TV shows but they didn’t
fade away from public memory. They kept a firm balance on the surfboard of
perception despite having only a dud Aladin to their credit in 2009. The
film’s music didn’t do justice to their talent but thankfully, the fact
didn't go unnoticed.
*Future Projects:* They might have lost their way a bit but have already
made a wham bam comeback with the pulsating music of I Hate Luv Storys. They
also have Anubhav Sinha’s Ra.One, Ram Gopal Varma’s Rakta Charitra,
Siddharth Anand’s Anjaana Anjaani, Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan and Dansih
Aslam’s Break Ke Baad in 2010. So they may well improve on the numbers game
next year.
*Filmfare Tip:* Maybe you guys should form a band together with S-E-L and
jolt the music industry out of its complacency.
*Filmfare Awards:* 1

*[image: Gulzar]5.Gulzar*
*Rank 2008: *None
*What They Did:* Gulzar has been making us fall in love with poetry since he
wrote Mora gora ang lai le for Bandini in the 50s. No wonder he is a contant
fixture in the power list. He made us go back to our first love in Dil to
bachcha hai ji (Ishqiya) and earlier made us taste some acid in Aaja aaja
dil nichode (Kaminey) …these two examples are enough to prove that Gulzar’s
poetry is more in sync with times than his years.
*Future Projects:* He is busy weaving his magic for Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat
Khoon Maaf.
*Filmfare Tip:* Don’t change, ever!
*Filmfare Awards:* 19

*Rank 2008:* 7
*What They Did:* The musical duo have been making waves as prolific
composers since last few years and stamped their entry in the power list
this year with films like Kurbaan, Luck, Teen Patti etc in their kitty.
*Future Projects:* They have Walt Disney’s live action-animation film Yodha
in the pipeline.
*Filmfare Tip:* Okay, you guys, the football season is over. Now get over
the euphoria of composing the FIFA anthem and get cracking on new film
projects.

*What He Did:* One of our most respected writers, Javed saab’s verses have
become part of our mindscape. The wordsmith forged new ditties in films like
Karthik Calling Karthik, Luck By Chance and Wake Up Sid among others. Peppy,
zany, in tune with the times lyrics continue to flow from the lyricist’s
pen.
*Future Projects: *Son Farhan’s Don 2, Ashutosh Gowariker’s Khelenge Hum Jee
Jaan Sey, and daughter Zoya’s Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara are some of the films
he’s working on.

Bleating goat..! Wow...for me it sounds as if some girl is in danger and

Excellent words, Chord! I loved the way you wrote on Kadhal Anukkal!!! This
just makes me to love this song much more than I did...I bet this song is
providing a very good contrast to the previous 'Rajini' melody in Sivaji -
Sahana...If AR had given a similar melody, people would have complained it
as just another 'Sahana' !!!

I hope some members would help in translating the lyrics soon...'Irumbile'
has got some very interesting lyrics considering the duet between a robot
and a woman...Haven't heard such amusing lyrics in Tamil for a long time...

[arr] Yogi b - a good change over Blaaze...

2010-08-03 Thread live for arr Live
Enthiran is rocking. esp puthiya manitha, arima , pudihya anikkal and
kilimanjaro. Yogi b's voice is good and a definite change over Blaaze's vocals.
I feel that Blaaze has been overused by ARR and it needs a change. Blaaze -
please take some time off. I hope ARR continus his future raps with yogi B and
others.

[arr] A glimpse of Rahman’s concerts

2010-08-03 Thread Bivin Chandra
AR Rahman’s Jai Ho-Journey Home world tour started in May, but preparations
began six months prior to that, at Los Angeles’ famous Centre Stage Auditorium,
where Michael Jackson had rehearsed for his This Is It tour. Shows have been
held in New York, Washington DC, Chicago, New Jersey, London and Birmingham.

Says Shweta Pandit, lead female vocalist of the tour, “Singing at the O2 Arena,
where Michael Jackson was to perform last year was touching and humbling. The
audience’s reaction was so special that I felt like I had magical powers!

“This feeling is rare. I have dedicated my first-ever performance at O2 Arena
to the memory of MJ.” Future concerts are scheduled in San Fransisco, Detroit,
Raleigh, Dallas, Houston, Paris, Zurich and Vancouver. She states, “The
response has been incredible, possibly the most fulfilling experiences for me
as a vocalist.”

Shweta was first seen on TV in the 9X show, Mission Ustaad, in 2008 where
Rahman and Javed Akhtar appeared as the judges. Shweta reveals, “It was a show
on playback singers composing music. That's when Rahman sir heard me sing. I
have been touring with him for more than a year since." Shweta has previously
worked with Rahman at concerts in Hyderabad, Muscat, and in Australia, at the
Sydney Festival 2010.

Coming back to the Rahman tour, Shweta recollects some memorable experiences in
LA. She recalls, “While practising at Centre Stage, we had Janet Jackson,
Jermaine Jackson, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus and Pussycat Dolls, rehearsing just
next door. They had amazing things to say about Indian music. I got a chance to
speak to Jermaine and he mentioned how Indian music has become a rage, thanks
to Slumdog Millionaire’s soundtrack.”

I Think Endhiran is The Best Soundtrack . its Science Fiction Film and
Rahman gives what that movie wants . the Robot Can't Sing  Aaromale ,
Mannipaaya or Usure Pogudhey  kinds of Songs . So In My View Endhiran is the
Big Science Fiction Fantasy Music never heard before . please Stop Comparing to
other albums and Listen To Endhiran Song and Enjoy the Music

Thanks for this excellent review ichord! I tend to agree with the different
comments you have made on your review. However, we need to keep in mind that
the movie is not set in the future as a result A.R.Rahman might have opted for
this "clichéd, stereotyped robotic sound" in "Chitti Dance Showcase" in order
to keep it realistic?

Re: [arr] Enthiran Music Review - A 4 Point Masterpiece Only

2010-08-03 Thread kishore parayath
Hey chord..
Even, I had the same opinion... The robotic sounds date pretty much back to
the 80's. But if u remember Ilayaraja's title song from the Kamal Haasan
starrer Vikram, which was completely arranged and programmed by ARR, u can't
certainly deny that ARR had such ideas during those times too.

The symphonic strings in Arima Arima, are indeed very addictive, but ARR
unusually, does not impress us with the progressions; which fail to be
purely orchestral. Irumbile Oru idhayam, too being conceptually old, our
expectations for a futuristic album become shattered.
Despite all these, the sonic experimentation and periodical transitions
within tracks places Endhiran way ahead of any other Tamil soundtrack
released in the past 5 years.

Dunno if Enthiran will grow even more on me and surpass Raavanan to become the
best ARR album of the year!
