[arr] Rahman promises to go beyond ‘Waka Waka’ with CWG theme song

2010-08-16 Thread Bivin Chandra
It will be another 10 days before the Commonwealth Games theme song is
officially launched but Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman on Monday promised
it would be worth the wait as his ‘Yaaro India bula liya’ would be unlike
anything that has happened before.Rahman said the song would go beyond
Shakira’s chart-buster for this year’s soccer World Cup ‘Waka Waka’Rahman said
the launch of the song will have to wait some more because he is still giving
some final touches.“I have been working on the song for the past six months. It
is in my voice with a chorus and I promise that it will be a big part of the
celebration and will be unlike anything that has happened before in India,” the
celebrated musician told reporters.Rahman, however, refused to give details
about the song beyond the opening line ‘Yaaro India bula liya’, saying it would
be better if it is launched properly.“I can’t reveal much because I have to
tweak the lyrics a bit
and add some sound elements. But the song is about India, about energy,
winning and not giving up. We want the crowd to sing along with us at the
opening ceremony. It is simple but not simplistic,” he said. When asked whether
the song will manage to overshadow Shakira’s popular football World Cup anthem
‘Waka Waka’, Rahman said it is “exactly no” Waka Waka’“It is not ‘Waka Waka’ We
wanted to go beyond it. It is complex, difficult to explain but I am sure you
will like it when you hear it,” he added.Rahman has also planned an orchestra
and a dedication to the country’s cultural heritage and Mahatma Gandhi.“I have
cancelled all my prior engagements to prepare this theme so you can understand
how serious I am about this,” he added.Rahman said that he was initially
apprehensive whether the GoM will like the song but they liked the song.“I was
a little bit apprehensive if they will like it because the Group of Minister
consist of
aged people but they all liked and approved it,” he said.Organising committee
chairman Suresh Kalmadi said the theme will make every Indian proud.“The GOM
gave us their consent in the 26th meeting yesterday and I am sure Rahman’s song
will make every Indian happy and it will spread awareness,” he said. The opening
ceremony will have Rahman performing live.Filmmaker Shyam Benegal, who heads
the CWG cultural committee, was also present along with noted dancer Shovana
Narayan, creative head of the committee Bharat Bala and director of Wizcraft
International Entertainment, Viraf Sarkari.

I heard Mr Jaipal Reddy, Minister announcing that the theme song will be
released in 10 days.

And I sincerely hope that atleast "THIS DEADLINE" will be met by the CWG
organising committee. So far they have only talked... talked. talked and
the entire Games planning is in a mess.

I hope atleast ARR's theme song is released on time ! :-)

beautifully summarized, Buff.

I concede that ARR is independent of his fans. He can take our
feedbacks or choose to ignore them.

Fans didn't create ARR. ARR came first and then we became his fans
because we liked his work. Fans will stop being fans when they
conclude that they don't like any of ARR's work for quite some time.

ARR should continue creating the music the way he likes.

Re: [arr] Re: THE RAHMAN TODAY

2010-08-16 Thread V S Rawat
I personally don't find any problem even if ARR uses others' loops or
gets part of music or BGM done by others (I don't know whether he does
or doesn't).

ultimately ARR is responsible for the overall quality of music, so he
listens to those "others'" work, he must be changing that if he felt
it lacking in any way, and then he must be including it in any song or
album of his.

What we get in the final product is ARR approved sounds. For me it
doesn't matter if other persons worked on those sounds.

Hasn't it been always the case. It is like various people playing
various instruments in recording of any song anywhere in the world,
not just bolly or holly film music but even symphonies, operas. The
main composer is responsible for the overall music. Of course he can't
play 100 instruments all by himself for each song.

It is like lyrics, we know that ARR himself has never written lyrics,
he is officially having someone to write lyrics for each song, still,
ARR is responsible for the lyrics in his songs. What problem can
anyone have with it?

It was a bit odd to see an opera singer at this contest but that was great
stuff. Her Italian does sound anglicized much like Sarah Brightman. She should
aim at bigger things though. At some point, shows like these are less about the
music and more about popularity/ personality.

I wish such shows stop the gimmickry. There's no need for the accordion music
to
make fun of her entry on stage.

And yes, Vishal asked about KMMC for the benefit of those who didn't know about
it.

I loved the way she performed the opera number and how gracefully she switched
to the O rey chori track. She was just phenomenal!

About Vishal asking about KMMC...I don't think he asked the question out of
ignorance, then again, it was not rudeness either. Probably he wanted Mughda to
say it out aloud herself. There were many people out there who have no idea
what
KMMC is, including my mom. In fact, I was watching the show with my mom last
week and both of us were amazed with Mughda's performance. The moment Mughda
mentioned that she's a student of KMMC, I couldn't help myself but to exclaim
with a big "WOW!". My mom on the other hand, had no clue why I was so excited
and kept asking me what KMMC is...til' Mughda provided the answer.

And what do you say about reviewers criticizing ARR's music just
because it is by ARR whereas they would have appreciated it if it were
by anyone else.

There are all sort of people. We have to live with them. That's why

current music (of 80s) and used to hear only old songs of 60s. Then,
Anand Milind, Nadeem Shravan, jatin lalit, ARR brought me back to
current music in 80s-90s. Now I like several songs of 80s also that I
hated then.

I am in terms with my personal tastes so I don't feel bad when I don't
like any occasional ARR album or song, or I don't feel odd in liking
any non-ARR song.

you are an ARR fan for 20 years, I can feel for you how much you are
torturing yourself when you don't like current songs of ARR. you have
all the absolute rights to your likings. I don't like members telling
wrong things about you. Nobody can force anybody to like or dislike a
song or album.

So, do keep posting your frank opinions whether you like an album/
song or whether you dislike it. We being a fan group doesn't mean for
me that we are bound to like everything nor are we bound to praise
everything. But we are indeed bound to keep sharing and keep
expressing our honest opinions.

I appreciate your courage that you kept on posting when so many people
write unjustified things in response to your posts. Don't let that
make you stop posting ever. You are here for ARR's love, we co-members
are just incidental.

2010-08-16 Thread Vinayakam Murugan
I think it was a deliberate attempt to copy the incident which happened on
one of those international Idol shows. I forgot the name of the lady. She
was middle aged and a bit on the plumpier side. The judges were skeptical on
her entry but then were blown away by her music.

This seems to be an attempt to "copy" this as is. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa is nowadays
famous for its gimmicks, which is unfortunate because it was one of the
pioneering talent hunt shows in India.

Shai,

is this the same guy who thought Raavan was a "my god" album! You even said
that it was better than VTV and a masterpiece. What happened? And don't worry,
Mani Ratnam is not going Harris Jeyeraj's way. And to answer your question

"wat international commitments have made him today...nothing..."

Have you forgotten the "international commitment" that brought AR two
significant Oscars along with many other reputed music awards bestowed on an
Indian for the first time! Come on Shai. Please try not to use phrases like "
it makes me sic". AR is not our property. He is not our slave for him to do
"something for us because we are his fans". He should be and is a slave to
music and only music-that's why we are here.  I think he deserves respect for
that and enjoy what we can. Not all his albums may please you but remember that
it pleases someone else out there. That's life. "Like a box of chocolates! "

Hi friends,

The Rahman today is more dependent on his brand name than on the strength of
his music
or his tunes may be with the exception of a  VTV or a RAVAN cos when i was
listening to
Endiran ( it was really a good album) but the fact was the music arrangement
was not anything we could associate with Rahman. I was listening to Endiran as
it was composed
by Rahman only and if it had been by any other composer the critics would hav

it to pieces.

I understand that Rahman is busy with his international assignments and he his

tamil projects as they are forced on him.

Dear sir don't take up any tamil projects and if you do,  we need nothing short
of a RAHMAN  ALBUM meeting all the criteria associated with you.I feel this is

[AR Rahman] NEW DELHI: It will be another 10 days before the
Commonwealth Games
theme song is officially launched but Oscar-winning composerAR
Rahman on
Monday promised it would be worth the wait as his 'Yaaro India
  bula liya' would be
unlike anything that has happened before.

Rahman said the song would go beyond Shakira's chart-buster for this
year's soccer World Cup

'Waka Waka'.

Rahman said the launch of the song will have to wait some more because
he is still giving some final touches.

"I have been working on the song for the past six months. It is in my
voice with a chorus and I promise that it will be a big part of the
celebration and will be unlike anything that has happened before in
India," the celebrated musician told reporters.

Rahman, however, refused to give details about the song beyond the
opening line 'Yaaro India bula liya', saying it would be better if it is
launched properly.

"I can't reveal much because I have to tweak the lyrics a bit and add
some sound elements. But the song is about India, about energy, winning
and not giving up. We want the crowd to sing along with us at the
opening ceremony. It is simple but not simplistic," he said.

When asked whether the song will manage to overshadow Shakira's popular
football World Cup

anthem 'Waka Waka', Rahman said it is "exactly no" Waka Waka'.

"It is not 'Waka Waka'. We wanted to go beyond it. It is complex,
difficult to explain but I am sure you will like it when you hear it,"
he added.

Rahman has also planned an orchestra and a dedication to the country's
cultural heritage and Mahatma Gandhi.

"I have cancelled all my prior engagements to prepare this theme so you
can understand how serious I am about this," he added.

Rahman said that he was initially apprehensive whether the GoM will like
the song but they liked the song.

"I was a little bit apprehensive if they will like it because the Group
  of Minister
consist of aged people but they all liked and approved it," he said.

Organising committee

chairman Suresh Kalmadi said the theme will make every Indian proud.

"The GOM gave us their consent in the 26th meeting yesterday and I am
sure Rahman's song will make every Indian happy and it will spread
awareness," he said.

The opening ceremony will have Rahman performing live. Filmmaker Shyam
Benegal, who heads the CWG
  cultural
committee, was also present along with noted dancer Shovana Narayan,
creative head of the committee Bharat Bala and director of Wizcraft
International Entertainment, Viraf Sarkari.

Re: [arr] THE RAHMAN TODAY---doesnt look good--

2010-08-16 Thread wiredbeats
I have a big point to make but first...

Listen to this story.

When Mettalica released their album Death metalic, few sections of the devoted
fans blasted the sound quality. While most of them loved the album in it
totality. The minority of fans who disliked the album found another strange
thing.

Few select tracks from the album were included in the popular console game
guitar hero and the versions in guitar hero was far more clear as against the
heavily compressed and noisy tracks in the CD.

Soon, the fans made such a noise that they forced the recording company to send
the entire album for re-mastering. The minority of fans who started the noise
that the album sucks, became a potent force for metallica band to relook at the
way their albums are recorded and engineered.

I know the whole story and its very interesing on how few fans, moved the
metallica band and their recording company. But thats for later.

To me...this is the true fan base. This what an accomplished artist requires. A
brutal fan base, which does not dilute reviews and certianly does not worship
everything thats churned out.

We as Rahman fan group are evolving and we will get there in terms of maturity.
As such, already we together comprise the most intelligent and organised fan
group any indian artist has.

So lets give people some room to be critical and even harsh at times. No
problem. Not liking an song or album is as normal as liking.
you gotta be kidding if you say, i like all of rahman's tracks. Even he himself
may not be liking all!

I didn't think it was constructive criticism at all.
I agree that a brutal fan base could contribute to the artists's growth but
the
above and few of the other mails that have been circulating these days contains
comments like "his music has been crap since 2000. anyone who likes his music
in
recent times (except for Delhi 6) is lying to himself" etc.
that's unwarranted and unnecessary. Not liking an album is fine (I don't like
Endhiran- not my cup of tea) but trying to impose that view on everyone else in
this group and also implying that people who think otherwise are being
dishonest
isn't healthy and is in no comparison to the Metallica analogy. Demanding
better
sound quality of an album and outrightly stating that whatever that's been
churned out in the last 10 years is rubbish are two different things. Because
if
it's been that long, then I guess you may no longer be a fan of his music
because at the end of the day change is the only constant thing in the world.
And music is no exception to that.

[arr] Re: Speechless/Mind blowing/Amazing BGM never heard before

2010-08-16 Thread dass

Srinivas, thanks for posting this! It deserves all superlatives!

I am time transported to 1999 when I am listening to this clip. Then we
(teenage friends) were so mad of this album. Golden days of ARR! Watched the
movie twice in big screen only for the songs and the bgm as they elevated the
mood of the romantic scenes so well!!!

This film's music is one of the best/finest works of ARR till now!

'En swase kaatrae - title song', 'Theendai', 'Oru thuli', 'Thirakaatha' - You
will feel the heaven after listening to these songs!!!

I would say these are still fresh.

Though ARR music has no barriers, if you know the language of the lyrics, then
you will enjoy them thoroughly!

Thanks again!

1990-  1995 - ARR is CITY STAR (popular in chennai) for chennaities kadalan,
bombay, tiruda..
1995 - 2000 - ARR is TAMIL STAR (popular in tamilnadu) for giving movies like
karuthamma,tajmahal, padayappa, sangamam..
2000 - 2005 - ARR is INDIAN STAR (popular in india) for giving movies like RDB,
ALAIPAYUTHE, LAGAAN, MANGAL PANDEY,...
2005 - 2010 - ARR is GLOBAL STAR (popular in hollywood) for giving movies like
SDM, ENTHIRAN, VTV, RAVAN..
2010-2015 ARR will be the UNIVERSAL STAR  (popular in world),,,for giving

I think it was a deliberate attempt to copy the incident which happened on one
of those international Idol shows. I forgot the name of the lady. She was
middle
aged and a bit on the plumpier side. The judges were skeptical on her entry but
then were blown away by her music.

This seems to be an attempt to "copy" this as is. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa is nowadays
famous for its gimmicks, which is unfortunate because it was one of the
pioneering talent hunt shows in India.

2010-08-16 Thread Ram Motipally
this is not a response to any of the points in this thread. It is a response to
the subject line.

I do not agree. I think AR has evolved and is still evolving and experimenting
and trying new things. Some will work, some will not work. Some I will like,
some I will not like. But I believe AR is still top-class, world-class and his
peak is ahead of him and not behind him.

Rahman of today - looks better than ever ! Just the expectations are higher

Even he himself
may not be liking all!

that
it was better than VTV and a masterpiece. What happened? And don't worry, Mani
Ratnam is not going Harris Jeyeraj's way. And to answer your question

"wat international commitments have made him today...nothing..."

Have you forgotten the "international commitment" that brought AR two
significant Oscars along with many other reputed music awards bestowed on an
Indian for the first time! Come on Shai. Please try not to use phrases like "
it
makes me sic". AR is not our property. He is not our slave for him to do
"something for us because we are his fans". He should be and is a slave to
music
and only music-that's why we are here. I think he deserves respect for that
and
enjoy what we can. Not all his albums may please you but remember that it
pleases someone else out there. That's life. "Like a box of chocolates! "

Subject: [arr] Rahman promises to go beyond ‘Waka Waka’ with CWG theme song

It will be another 10 days before the Commonwealth Games theme song is
officially launched but Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman on Monday promised
it
would be worth the wait as his ‘Yaaro India bula liya’ would be unlike anything
that has happened before.
Rahman said the song would go beyond Shakira’s chart-buster for this year’s
soccer World Cup ‘Waka Waka’
Rahman said the launch of the song will have to wait some more because he is
still giving some final touches.
“I have been working on the song for the past six months.
It is in my voice with a chorus and I promise that it will be a big part of the
celebration and will be unlike anything that has happened before in India,” the
celebrated musician told reporters.
Rahman, however, refused to give details about the song beyond the opening line
‘Yaaro India bula liya’, saying it would be better if it is launched properly.
“I can’t reveal much because I have to tweak the lyrics a bit and add some
sound
elements. But the song is about India, about energy, winning and not giving up.
We want the crowd to sing along with us at the opening ceremony. It is simple
but not simplistic,” he said.
When asked whether the song will manage to overshadow Shakira’s popular
football
World Cup anthem ‘Waka Waka’, Rahman said it is “exactly no” Waka Waka’
“It is not ‘Waka Waka’ We wanted to go beyond it. It is complex, difficult to
explain but I am sure you will like it when you hear it,” he added.
Rahman has also planned an orchestra and a dedication to the country’s cultural
heritage and Mahatma Gandhi.
“I have cancelled all my prior engagements to prepare this theme so you can
understand how serious I am about this,” he added.
Rahman said that he was initially apprehensive whether the GoM will like the
song but they liked the song.
“I was a little bit apprehensive if they will like it because the Group of
Minister consist of aged people but they all liked and approved it,” he said.
Organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi said the theme will make every
Indian proud.
“The GOM gave us their consent in the 26th meeting yesterday and I am sure
Rahman’s song will make every Indian happy and it will spread awareness,” he
said.
The opening ceremony will have Rahman performing live.
Filmmaker Shyam Benegal, who heads the CWG cultural committee, was also present
along with noted dancer Shovana Narayan, creative head of the committee Bharat
Bala and director of Wizcraft International Entertainment, Viraf Sarkari.

Don't media make use of the opportunity to ask some sensible
questions? The q&a section was like a market place with people
screaming around. In the presence of an achiever, won't people at
least try to speak something meaningful? Attrocious. Hate those
people.

[arr] A.R. Rahman to ‘Welcome’ Games Athletes

2010-08-16 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
A.R. Rahman to ‘Welcome’ Games Athletes
http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2010/08/16/ar-rahman-to-welcome-commonwealth-athletes/

By Arlene Chang

It’s official. Oscar-winning music composer A. R. Rahman’s song
“Swagatham” (”Welcome”) will be the theme song for the Commonwealth
Games to be held in Delhi this October.

Mr. Rahman presented his song to a committee of ministers recently
appointed to oversee the progress of the six-billion-dollar Games
organization, which has been plagued by delays and accusations of
corruption Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy heads the group,
which includes Sports Minister M.S. Gill and Delhi Chief Minister
Sheila Dikshit, among others.

“The song is about energy, winning and not giving up,” composer Mr.
Rahman said at a press conference organized Monday by the Games’
Organizing Committee. “Once you hear it I think you’ll like it.”

Mr. Rahman seemed reluctant at first to reveal much more about the
song, saying he was still tweaking the lyrics and that it would be
released in 10 days.

But the journalists were persistent.

“It’s kind of ‘Waka Waka’?” one journalist asked, referring to the
song Colombian pop star Shakira sang for the FIFA World Cup in South
Africa this year.

“Exactly no,” said Mr. Rahman. “We wanted to go further and do
something else. And doing same thing like ‘Waka Waka’ was not my
thing.”

Finally Mr. Rahman sang the first line of the song: “Oh Yaaron! Yeh
India, Bulaa Liya…(Oh Friends! India has called you…).” Watch:

Pratik Prakashbapu Patil, India’s junior sports minister, told the
Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house on Thursday that Mr. Rahman will sing
the theme song at the opening ceremony for the Games. Mr. Rahman is
being paid 55.5 million rupees ($1.1 million) for composing the song
and for his appearance, inclusive of service tax.

The Games organizers no doubt hope that Mr. Rahman can bring a little
“Jai Ho” magic to the event. Last year Mr. Rahman won an Oscar for
that song from the 2008 movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” which also won
Best Picture in 2009. The movie won two Oscars for Mr. Rahman,
including for original score and original song.

With just 48 days to go, New Delhi’s Commonwealth Games and its
organizing Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi have largely been
generating negative publicity, prompting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
to decide to personally review preparedness for the event that begins
Oct. 3.

“The Prime Minister said that the eyes of the world were on the
country as we conduct this prestigious event,” said a statement from
Mr. Singh’s office Saturday. “He urged all concerned to work
single-mindedly so that the Games could be held in a manner the nation
could be justifiably proud of.”

[arr] Indian Idol 5 Sreeram wants to sing for Rahman

2010-08-16 Thread A.R.Rajib

For Hyderabad boy Sreeram Chandra, this Independence Day couldn't have been
more special. He realised his dream of winning music reality show *Indian
Idol 5*, and can't wait now for his next dream - of singing for Bollywood
and Oscar winning music composer A.R. Rahman - to come true.

"My next dream is to make it big in Bollywood," Sreeram, who was declared
the winner of *Indian Idol 5* Sunday, told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

"I want to sing hit songs, be a well-known playback singer and be a star
performer. I want to learn a lot. 'Indian Idol' has given me a concrete base
to create a name for myself and I want to improve on it by working with all
the music directors, especially AR Rahman sir," he added.

[arr] Waiting for the anthem

2010-08-16 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Waiting for the anthem
Navdeep Kaur Marwah, Hindustan Times

It’s touted to be India’s version of Waka Waka. But, less than 50 days
before The Commonwealth Games, Delhiites have no idea what the theme
song for the much-anticipated event sounds like. The frustration was
only compounded on Monday when, at an event to unveil the anthem, no

same was aired. To make matters worse, neither the organisers, nor AR
Rahman, who has composed the theme song for the Games, gave out any
details, barring a couple of words. “I urge everyone to be patient and
wait for at least 10 days,” Rahman said.

When members of the media insisted on more details, Rahman remained
elusive, and spoke only in broad generalisation. “I’ve been working on
the song for the past six months — it’s energetic, and will get
everyone hooked. We are still tweaking the lyrics and we want this
song to go further than Waka Waka.” Sounds good, Mr Rahman, but
anything more concrete? Hardly. “The song is simple but not
simplistic. It talks about the spirit of winning and not giving up. It
is mostly in Hindi, with some English lyrics.”

Interestingly, Waka Waka, the theme song for the soccer World Cup, was
unveiled months before the event, so that the world could acquaint
itself with the song. “The anthem should’ve been out by July,” rues
Sukhmeet Kaur, a teacher. “Rahman should understand the anxieties of
the nation and stop procrastinating like this,” says Priya Sharma, BPO
employee.

"do we really want to listen to english songs from an english movie which will
not be like tamil or hindi songs that are so so soulful..."

are u kidding me??...so u are basically saying that Indian music has a monopoly
on soulfulness?..that's just ridiculous!face the facts...Indian music holds
little appeal for non-Indians EXCEPT AR Rahman...he is the ONLY indian MD who
produces songs the whole WORLD does/would (if they listened to more) enjoy!

ARR is a MD of INTERNATIONAL quality...don't try and peg him into a local role!!

This article sounds like song delay is a bigger
problem than all other problems weaved around CWGames.
How come they are so more frustrated about a theme song than
about the rest of the actual organization of the games?

My thoughts exactly. Vishal wasn't pretending not to know about KM Music
Conservatory. He just asked so the audience can understand. I am pretty sure
he knows about KM.

Thanks for the link Ramesh R. really loved her performance :)

I gave up on these people.  there is no point in explaining it to them as they
all are so convinced that the whole world should think like them.

But they provide good laugh. so, keep posting.  every group needs clowns.

2010-08-16 Thread Vinayakam Murugan
Was listening to an old Tamil song which had these lines in it and it made
me remember this quote from ARR :)

"Puthu Raagam padaithathale naanum iraivane.. "

Re: [arr] Congrats to Sreeram Chandra....a future ARR singer?

2010-08-16 Thread Vinayakam Murugan
I loved his rendition of Khwaja Mere Khwaja. He even sang "Saiyaan" from
Nayak. This was a song which I had dismissed off and is one of my least
heard songs. After hearing it again, I have started appreciating the song.
