Re: [arr] D6 lyrics query

2009-07-07 Thread Adi
The song is describing a city and not a human being. Actually it is
describing a city as if it were a human being. And when he says that it has
heart on the right and the left sides, he means to say that the city has a
heart. It is emotional. If you listen to one line Bas ishq mohabbat pyar -
only love, romance and more love! ;) The city is totally emotional is the
bottomline. A poetic way of saying it is that it has heart all inside it.
Nice and simple I thought.

I was so disappointed too! Almost shocked I must say!

Some very irritating Malini was hosting some show called 'Music Mantra'

this?
Sad to have missed the Pune concert too.

heh heh... Get real... Get real...

2009/3/21 uday kiran uk_heartb...@yahoo.co.in

Nellore, March 20: Oscar winner and popular music composer A R Rahman
allegedly squabbled with a media person at Venadu dargah in Tada mandal on
Thursday while the latter was taking his photographs.

Rahman is a regular visitor to the dargah and reached there at about 1 pm
on Thursday from Chennai. When a vernacular reporter who belongs to the
village tried to take photographs of Rahman, he reportedly instructed his
followers to take away the camera from the reporter.

There was a heated discussion between the scribe and supporters of Rahman
for sometime and finally the camera was given back. Rahman immediately left
the place after offering prayers. A large crowd gathered to have a glimpse
 of the musical
 maestro.

Among the current music directors who's the toughest to work with?
AR Rehman. I haven't sung many songs for him. But it's really tough to
 work
with him. Rahman likes to work in the night. When you are in deep
 sleep,
suddenly his assistants come and knock the door and ask you to sing.

Now that Pak is in news again, your take on Pakistani singers ...
I have many friends and followers in Pakistan but I don't have a high
opinion of Pakistani singers. Our film industry is already bogged down
 by so
many artists who come for employment and then it also has to take the
 burden
of Pakistani artists, which is not fair to Indians. It's only a one-way
process because Indian artists can't go and perform there. Because they
don't have a platform. Set aside the political difference, both the
countries have cultural similarities but then exchange has to be two
 way.

This was the best ever TV programme on ARR I have watched till date.
This was telecasted on Pongal day in 1995. The Programme was titled A
R Rahman oru Kadhiraa illay Pudhiraa?. It was hosted by B.H. Abdul
 hameed.

  K. Balachander, Vairamuthu, SPB etc spoke about ARR for about 45
minutes. (Remember that this was during his early days where he has
done only Roja, Pudiya mugam, Thiruda^2, Vandichola chinrasu, Duet,
Kadhalan etc). SPB also told that in Japan they had printed T-shirts
with Chinna Chinna Aasai as the slogan.

ARR was wearing a Green Shirt (which was very common in all of his
interviews during those days) and it was in his Panchathan studio. For
the last 15 minutes of the interview, ARR was asked to compose
something for the Sun TV viewers on occasion of Pongal. It was the
first time (and last time i think) that ARR produced LIVE music .
Couple of Nadaswaram and Thavil people were there in his studio
and ARR gave them the swarams in verbal and asked them to play, and he
recorded them as they played (This was done 2-3 times after some
corrections) . He also gave notations to the Thavil person which was
awesome to watch. In the end, ARR mixed it completely and played it
for the viewers which was a TREAT to watch.

I am searching for the interview (SUN TV has the rights for it). In
those days there was no Internet or Youtube to get the interview next
day. I have recorded the same in a Audio cassette during those days.
 Have to search it now.

This one is a real treat for all RAHMANIACS and a must have !!

  Thanks,
  Sriram

ARR. I guess the Tavil was played by a famous person (Pazhanichamy? ??).

Good Thoughts Chord. I completely agree.

However, I guess, I have been really lucky in this regard :)

The biggest ARR fan and the closest to me is my dad. He brought a Tape
Recorder during the time Genteman was released. That was my first ever
cassette. He bought it after he liked the songs.

However, the next cassette we bought was Kizhaku Cheemayilae and it was on
the day of the audio release. He brought it home with a lot of excitement I
still clearly remember. With the song on side A starting Athaiku
piranthavalae, I remember the smiling approvals we gave each other :)

We still treasure all those audio cassettes. Infact for most of them, I can
recollect the day we had bought it and the initial feedback we shared.

During my school days, it was always my dad who tracked the audio release
dates and kept coming home with the 1st day release cassettes. After I moved
to chennai, I slowly took over, thanks to the Internet and
 arrahmanfans.com :)

He still listens to most of his music. He loved Chinnamma
Chillakama(Meenaxi). He loved O Saya from Slumdog!

No Surprise, the first person I called after ARR won the oscars was my Dad.
He was at his school. He is a teacher. Luckily he was in a break so I didnt
have to wait to share the news :)

Sorry abt a long mail. Somehow, whatever Chord shared, made me nostalgic
about all the good times :) Thanks for reading.

 Regards,
 Mugilan.

After reading Jagjit Singh's, Pyarelal's and Ali Khan's comments about
ARR and his music, it also struck me the big generational differences
in terms of attitudes and exposure towards music. Personally, I have
found that even with people I know, like my parents and their friends,
their appreciation for music is within a narrow range. Anything
outside that range is overlooked and not appreciated as much, and
sometimes ridiculed. I have found that amongst many elders, there is
a certain arrogance or haughtiness implying, we know what's best.
This is a product of our culture revering elders and their wisdom by
tradition in contrast to many seniors and elders feeling left out and
disrespected by attitudinal changes in today's world reflecting less
 respect and reverie towards seniors.

For example, when I gave my parents a copy of the D6 CD, they only
liked the folk and semi-classical elements of the soundtrack. That's
it. When I asked them about Jaane Tu, they said that they didn't like
the music, although they love and appreciate ARR's other works that
are more in line with their taste. Of course, even within elders,
there will be a lot of variation in terms of taste and attitude, but
overall, I feel that they are more narrow minded about music than we
youngsters are OVERALL AS A GROUP, keeping in mind individual
differences. Because ARR's music is so diverse and touching upon so
many different genres, a large percentage of his work is not going to
be appreciated by those with more narrow minded definitions of good
 music.

Who knows, maybe when we reach that age, we too may reflect some of
that narrow mindedness in terms of our exposure compared to what the
youth may be listening to at that time. However, I have hope that
because we youngsters have been exposed to such an array of world
music through ARR and other artists, I think we will generally have a
broader appreciation for music than previous generations.

ARR has gifted us with something very important: tolerance and open
mindedness for different types of music. Thank you ARR!

early March launches for similar compilations.

T-Series launched a three CD set two days before the Oscar awards
and the album has been well received by music lovers. Says T-Series
president - marketing media publishing (TV) Vinod Bhanushali, “The
album tracks Rahman’s journey from Roja to Slumdog Millionaire as we

Sony BMG, on the other hand, is in talks with major music labels

launching a compilation of Rahman’s hits in March.

Sony BMG Marketing director Sanujeet Bhujabal says, “We are
looking at most of his landmark works including songs from his Tamil

Bollywood, Tamil numbers, albums etc. We already have some five to six
Tamil titles which would be a part of the compilation.â€

A R Rahman and Sony BMG have been associated with his first album
‘Vande Mataram’. “We have been doing A R Rahman
collections/compilations since the past couple of years for his fans.
We feel it gives a nice platform to showcase AR Rahman’s range of
music to all his fans worldwide,†says Bhujabal.

Venus, which already has three earlier Rahman compilations in the
market would be giving out their title track of ‘Dil se’ to Sony
BMG, which is also in talks with Times Music for the rights of
Rahman’s ‘Jana gana mana’, the only Rahman title with that
label. Sony BMG is also obtaining the rights of ‘Saathiya’ and
 ‘Sapnay’ from Saregama.

Saregama would also be launching a compilation by 10 March by buying
rights from other music labels like Sony BMG, Venus, Universal etc.

Saregama head, New Media and Publishing Gautam Sarakar denies that
the label is trying to cash in on the slumdog ...

The trend continues. Like most of the times, whenever the music by ARR
becomes such a big blockbuster hit, the movie falters, and it falters
big time. I couldn't believe that Rakeysh also fallen like this with a
 bad screenplay.

ARR composed gems for this movie, but now the film has been declared a
disaster. after Yuvaraaj, now its Delhi-6.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra thinks out of the box and it's more than
evident now. First AKS, then RANG DE BASANTI, now DELHI 6. A two-liner
of the story may give you an impression that it's similar to UTV's
earlier outing SWADES, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker: An American of
Indian origin returns to his roots and decides to stay back in India.
But DELHI 6 bites more than it can chew.

Set in old Delhi, the screenplay [Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Prasoon
Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey] takes its own sweet time to come to the point.
In fact, the entire first half is dedicated to the sundry characters
in the bylanes of old Delhi, where several stories run parallel with
the main plot... The two warring brothers [Om Puri, Pawan Malhotra]
and the wall that divides the two; the daughter of the house [Sonam
Kapoor] aspires to be an 'Indian Idol' contestant; a moneylender's
[Prem Chopra] wife has an illicit relationship with one of his
lecherous debtors [Cyrus Sahukar]; an 'untouchable' [Divya Dutta]
makes more sense than the so-called thekedaars of samaj; a friend of
the family [Rishi Kapoor] has still not forgotten his first love
[Tanvi Azmi]. Oh yes, there's also a 'Kaala Bandar' who spreads havoc
in the locality. Really, Rakeysh tries to pack in multiple stories in
  those 2.18 hours.

But, alas, the problem is that barring a few individualistic
sequences, you don't carry the film home. The film is engaging in bits
and spurts. Worse, it tends to get monotonous, preachy and boring and
the end is so bizarre, you actually want to ask the writers, 'Hey
  guys, you okay?'

Let's cut a long story short: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra misses the bus
  this time.

DELHI 6 tells the story of a young American boy Roshan [Abhishek
Bachchan] of Indian origin, who comes to India for the first time, to
drop his ailing grandmother [Waheeda Rehman]. She wants to retire and
spend the last leg of her life back home; dissolving into the soil she
  was born in.

In America, having led a very western lifestyle, Roshan is not
familiar with the sites and smells, the food and culture, the religion
and beliefs, this huge melting pot that India is. He believes that
Dadi had left her family and loved ones back in America, only to
realize that how wrong he was.

The warmth and affection of the neighbourhood embraces him with open
arms. Amidst all this he meets the beautiful Bittu [Sonam Kapoor], who
wants to break free from the typical Indian social structure, to whom
Roshan is destined to lose his heart.

That Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is an accomplished storyteller is evident
in several individualistic scenes. Note the scene when Vijay Raaz
slaps Abhishek and Abhishek slaps him back. Also, portions in the
second hour, when a Baba [Akhilendra Mishra] triggers off the
Mandir-Masjid talk and divides the two communities, is very well
structured. The sequences are disturbing and the writers and director
succeed in exposing the fickle-minded people residing in the locality.

But the screenplay isn't foolproof. The romantic track is the weakest
link in the enterprise. The love story falls flat. Also, the ending is
so abstract that an average moviegoer would find it difficult to
comprehend what the actual culmination is. The sequence in the end,
when Amitabh and Abhishek have a conversation, looks weird. In fact,
ridiculous. What was the need to have this sequence? It makes no
sense. Even the Ram Leela sequences, interspersed at regular
intervals, are forced in the screenplay.

Rakeysh's handling of the subject is exemplary at places. But the
writing [faulty at times] as also the execution of the material isn't
the type that would appeal to all sections of moviegoers. A.R.
Rahman's music is outstanding; it's easily amongst his finest works.
'Masakali', 'Ye Dilli Hai Mere Yaar', 'Rehna Tu', 'Maula' and 'Genda
Phool' are amazing tracks. Ditto for Prasoon Joshi's lyrics; they're
gems. Binod Pradhan's cinematography is brilliant. Watch the Jama
Masjid sequence [breath-taking] or the camera movements in the bylanes
of old Delhi. Just one word to describe the output: Incredible!

Abhishek doesn't work. Also, his American accent looks fake. Sonam is
  likable.

It's three nominations that have been given for two award categories. I
understand we love ARR but even he cannot win three awards this Oscars! I am
just saying so that you are not disappointed on Feb 23rd morning! :)

I liked all three songs that were nominated. I hope AR does a hattrick
at Oscars (Bagging all three awards!). However, I will be happy even if
Peter Gabriel wins his first Oscar.

One more thing I would like to quote - Martin Scorcese has created better
films than his own Departed, but academy honoured him for his work in
Departed. So, let's not worry about the academy's choice and instead just
say, if one wins Oscar it's for what he has given to the society till date.

And something in this song reminds me of some of Bryan Adams' songs and

'Slumdog' vs. 'Wall-E' for best song
No clear frontrunner among Oscar nominees
  By JON BURLINGAME

For the third time in the past 20 years, music-branch voters chose only
 three tunes as best
song nominees. Two are from the same movie, and two of the singers are
 world-class world-music
  recording artists.

There is no clear-cut favorite this year, unlike, say, eight years ago
 when Bob Dylan's win for
Things Have Changed was a foregone conclusion, or the year of
 Titanic and its ubiquitous
Celine Dion song. What happens Feb. 22 depends several factors.

First, the Slumdog phenomenon: Both of the key songs in Slumdog
 Millionaire are nominated,
both co-written by leading Indian composer A.R. Rahman (who is also
 nominated for his original
score). The soundtrack album is rising fast on the charts, so a
 Slumdog win would not
  surprise.

But which song? Will voters remember that it was Jai Ho that was
 performed as an elaborately
choreographed, Bollywood-style dance number in the Mumbai train station
 at the end of the
  movie?

Jai Ho, with Indian lyrics by poet Gulzar, may be the most
 talked-about musical moment from
year-end films. And Oscar voters, excited about the prospect of seeing
 the number re-created on
the telecast, may be thinking about that when filling out their ballots.
If it wins, it will be
only the second foreign-language song to do so (after 2004's Al otro
 lado del rio from The
  Motorcycle Diaries).

But Rahman's collaboration with London-born, Sri Lankan-raised Maya
 Arulpragasam -- better
known to the pop world as M.I.A. -- on O... Saya may resonate with
 younger voters for its
pounding rhythms, electronica sound and rap-style vocals. That song's
 used earlier in the film,
as police chase poor youngsters from an airport tarmac through the
 streets.

Slumdog's competition is the song from the end of the Disney-Pixar
 movie Wall-E, co-written
by Thomas Newman (also nominated for his score) and Peter Gabriel. The
 nom is Gabriel's first
despite having composed scores for such films as The Last Temptation of
 Christ and
  Rabbit-Proof Fence.

Eight of the past 20 song statuettes have gone to tunes from animated
 movies (all Disney pics
but one). And nine of the past 20 have gone to popular artists
 (including Gabriel's ex-Genesis
bandmate Phil Collins, for Tarzan, another Disney toon). Also,
 Gabriel's human-rights and
environmental activism would seem to coincide with the politics of many
 Acad voters.

And, in recent years, voters have spread the Oscar wealth among multiple
 pics. A Slumdog
score win could translate into a Wall-E song win.

Re: [arr] The Right Place, The Right Time

2009-01-31 Thread Adi
A justification that's still not convincing any Rahman fan. He still gets
away making baselsess blanket statements. I respect his reviews a lot, but
these articles about ARR just go to prove that he cannot get over his
personal preferences of Ilayaraja and MSV. Sad, but true. Its like saying,
Bardwaj Rangan is a genius but he is able to get his readership across
because he is at the right place at the right time. Otherwise I guess he
would be restricted to his circle not because he is not a genius but because
the time was not right.

Overall, as a Rahman fan, I agree the times are different and *maybe* a
little more helpful to new music. I just don't understand the hue and cry
about this. Why can't Ilayaraja, if he is as big a genius as Rahman is, make
use of the same times and ride the wave? My take is this: In the case of
Rahman, it's not new music that's being appreciated it's the original music
that's being appreciated. Not to say that his precedents churned out banal
music, but it's Rahman's originality that's being celebrated throughout.
Originality coupled with melody is what is driving Rahman all the way. And
Rahman has delivered time and again - consistently. It would be rare to find
a rank bad composition among all his compositions. It is this pursuit of
perfection that is being rewarded. Why cannot people just accept that Rahman
has achieved what no other Indian has been able to despite wishing and
hoping and dreaming to get there. And at some point that has to be
attributed to the man himself and his greatness above his precedents. This
denial does not worry me, but has me thinking if I am making the same
mistake of giving too much importance to my personal preferences, as
Baradwaj Rangan has, without looking at facts. The facts, anyway, point to a
conclusion that's not contrarian to any of my views!

Love,
Adi.

*FEB 1, 2009 - WE HOPED FOR ONE OSCAR NOMINATION,* and he ended up with
three. How else can one celebrate the awesomeness of AR Rahman's achievement
than by appropriating the season's catchphrase-cliché: *Jai Ho*! I'm also
happy for Resul Pookutty, a name I've been noticing in the titles of most
prestige productions of late, and especially ecstatic for that genius
wordsmith named Gulzar. Yes, please note that I said genius. I'm making a
point of explicitly mentioning this because when I last wrote about another
genius – Rahman (and his Golden Globe achievement) – I'd made a case for his
success being a result of his being, at all times, at the right place and at
the right time, and quite a few readers misread this as taking away from the
 composer's genius.

That's the last thing I wanted to do – for the Tamil film industry has been
blessed with at least three incontrovertible geniuses in the musical front.
I do not have to affix the tag of genius before the names of MS
Viswanathan, who came first, or Ilayaraja, who followed, or now Rahman – you
only point out things that need pointing out, and calling these composers a
genius is like declaring that the sky is blue. We've had several
hit-makers, musicians who've churned out songs that were on our lips for a
month or two before getting consigned to the trash heap of memory, but this
Trinity – so to speak – has left a mark on how Tamil film music will be
perceived by posterity. If that's not genius, I don't know what is.

With the right-place-at-the-right-time thesis, I was simply alluding to
the *circumstances *that allowed Rahman's genius to shine through to the
extent that it has. My primary point is this: he arrived on the musical
scene when the country was expanding, when the world was shrinking, and when
he could be exactly who he wanted to be without worrying if enough listeners
would *get *his music. During the age of MSV and Ilayaraja, Tamil film
music was for Tamil Nadu and the Tamils scattered worldwide. Very few
non-Tamils had a clue what this music was all about because the film
industry, the music industry, the country, and indeed the world, was split
up into isolated pockets of locally consumed culture.

The audience for the music of those older composers was a vertical
cross-section of Tamil Nadu, percolating from the cities downwards to the
tiny little outposts whose names are familiar to us only through the films
of Bharathiraja. And it is a mark of the genius of MSV and Ilayaraja that
they were able to incorporate so many sounds and so many genres into their
music – to pick examples out of a hat, think MSV's big-band stylings in
 *Ninaithathai
nadathiye *or Ilayaraja's seamless assimilation of Carnatic and folk music
in *Thanaa vandha sandhaname *– while still satisfying what you'd call the
least-common-denominator listener, the Tamil equivalent of someone from the
North who tapped his feet to massy Laxmikant-Pyarelal

Re: [arr] Music to your ears

Awesome interview. Typical Rahman stuff. Never takes any credit for anything
he has not done. Mindblowing!

2009/1/20 Gopal Srinivasan catchg...@yahoo.com

   Music to your ears

 Dipti Nagpaul D'souza

A.R. Rahman is getting used to the global hysteria around Slumdog
 Millionaire.
Do the Golden Globe nomination and talk about a possible Oscar nomination
 for Slumdog
 Millionaire feel surreal?
When I first made the music, I hadn't imagined that it would be such a huge
 success. But after
watching the rough cut of the film that Danny Boyle sent me, I was
 optimistic. A lot has
happened since and the music has won accolades. But honestly, I'm happier
 about the success of
 the film as a whole.

How did you get the film?
Danny had been tracking my music for some time. In fact, every time he
 liked a Bollywood score,
it turned out to be mine. So he planned to have me do a part of the
 project. But I told him
that I'd either do it all or none. And he understood that I was asking for
 it because I could
not put half my heart into the project and give him one score. I wanted to
 give it my all.
Also, Anil Kapoor's kids were instrumental in convincing the team to take
 me on for the
 project.

 How involved was Danny Boyle?
To start with, I tried to see the film through his eyes. I found out what
 he liked and didn't
like about Bollywood films and their music. After an initial discussion, I
 e-mailed him four
different ideas. He liked three of the four options; we then started
 interacting more. I kept
sending him stuff and made short trips to London to meet him and finish the
 project.

You pushed the envelope with Slumdog..., giving it a racy edge.
There was stuff I'd wanted to do for a long time, but could never try it in
 our film industry.
When Slumdog Millionaire happened, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to
 utilise those ideas,
especially since I'd been given so much freedom to experiment. I then added
 elements that would
surprise the audience. Indians may find it too noisy. I don't think I can
 use this kind of
music for our films because Indians like to listen to music again and again
 and this may not
 suit their palate.

How did you manage to complete the music in three weeks?
Danny was also concerned about it. You can say I concentrated the energy of
 three months into
those three weeks. It was hard work indeed, and I didn't touch any other
 project at that time.
It worked because we all really wanted it to work.

Your work with M.I.A. in O saya is being applauded. How was it?
The equation was great. And it all started with a joke. M.I.A. said, 'You
 do romantic and
sentimental music and my work's very edgy. Let's do a role reversal.' I
 then sent her the music
online — she didn't even know the track because though she was present at
 the initial sittings,
she had to return since she was pregnant — and she sent me back her work.
 We then mixed it all
 together and it worked fabulously.

What's your opinion of the film?
After Bandit Queen, this is the first film I have so much hope for. I like
 the contemporary
touch and the technicalities are commendable. The spirit of the city has
 been captured well
though there's more resemblance to Mumbai of the past. Be it in music or
 screenplay, a right
balance has been maintained. When the film was being made, Warner Bros,
 which has invested in
it, was not even supposed to release it.

Only a DVD release was scheduled. But then the response was so great that
 they decided to take
 it across.

also because of this great man. Thanks Sridhar Anna. We miss you!

Arr should definitely do movies for talents like ameer and many more.

such pretentious directors who claim to make good movies but seldom do. In

Re: [arr] Sultan The Warrior

2008-07-21 Thread Adi
Taking this article at face value:
With Rajnikanth in a project, nothing seems to happen at a realistic scale.
I wonder what happens. Even on a commercial scale, I think this is a dumb
decision. A 1-and-a-1/2 hour animation movie can be run twice the number of
times a three hour full-length commercial feature film in one theatre having
the same capacity. That means double the revenue per day than a regular
format commercial film. Is it so difficult for the producers to figure this
out? Does Rajnikanth's mere presence hijack people's intelligence also? I
always thought Soundarya Rajnikanth was intelligent. I hope this article is
wrong!

Soundarya Rajinikanth, the director of Sultan the Warrior, which is
touted as a Rs 2- billion cartoon extravaganza profiling her father's life
and work, is considering including in it the superstar's live action to
increase the duration of the one-hour animation film to 2-1/2 hours and make
 it a regular commercial film.

The live action, it is said, will appeal to all sections of the audience
 and not just children.

Actress Ileana's name is mentioned to play opposite Rajinikanth in the
'live portion' and she is said to be very keen to sign the project. Many
other actresses are in the race and no final decision has yet been taken,
 according to sources.

Soundarya originally wanted to make the movie with animated Rajinikanth
 playing the protagonist.

By increasing the duration of the film and making it a regular commercial
film with Rajini's presence, the producers are said to be hoping to sell its
rights for a price even higher than that Kuselan has fetched.

The film is being produced jointly by Ocher Studios owned by Soundarya and
 Warner Brothers.

A.R. Rahman has scored the music for the film and the graphics and visual
effects have been done by Soundarya's team at Ochar.

My picks for the most under-rated albums of ARR would be:

   1. Tehzeeb
   2. Zubeidaa
   3. Bose
   4. Water
   5. Bombay Dreams (in India)

I am sure not many would agree with this. But then, my two cents. Thanks.

techno beats backed by nice Saxophone bits. The only problem with
Tehzeeb (in those days) was it had weak storyline and Rahman
introduced sudden techno gener (same like Yuva in those days)

Regarding to the subject, I think Swades is most under rated /
unnoticed album of ARR. Though 'Bose' and 'Meenaxi' are others, they
weren't mainstream movies like Swades. The biggest disappointment
for me is, ARR not getting any awards for Swades, even it was best
deserved for National awards. 'Yeh jo des hai' alone had capability
of fetching a national award. But anyway, people still enjoy and
praise Swades album. ARR once said, that he is getting lot of

Re: [arr] Time gap between albums

2008-06-18 Thread Adi
Nice thread here. Will add my two cents.

Actually the music label companies should negotiate with each other to be
sensible business-wise. They are eating into each other's pie here.
Unknowingly, somewhere this kind of thing also supports piracy I guess.

I think that the cost of the music CDs should be reduced to Rs. 50/- or
thereabouts. This way the dependable youth can buy three music CDs for the
cost of one and also have the satisfaction of having the original (ADA
costed Rs. 160/- if I remember right). This results in a low-margin (the
margin would still be around 50% though [not considering distribution
costs]) high-volume game for the music owners without having to compromise
on the release dates and also avoid piracy. Thus it would be two birds with
one arrow to quote a cliche! :)

Love,
Adi.

in one month (let alone in 1 day) will not be affordable to all. Not many
would want to spend on two albums in one month Moreover, there are lots
of students who are ARR fans, and they can't afford 2 albums. And of course,
they can't wait... They download MP3s, and once they get MP3s, they never
buy the album.. I know at least 4 friends of mine who are students, who used
to buy all of ARR CDs. They couldnt afford both Ada and JTYJN, so they
bought just JTYJN Reason: parents object to 2 albums in a month! These
are no isolated cases, and i guess this must be happening everywhere.. . On
a similar note, two movies of the same lead-actor never release on the same
day. If two films of an actor are ready for release at about the same time,
the producers of the two films negotiate and one of them postpones the
release by a few weeks I've seen that happen many times in tamil film
industry. Similarly, can't ARR can also intervene in audio release dates?
I'm sure he will hav that much influence... Just my two cents.. Aravind

Vithur, you have posted a particular part of the entire interview. I guess
you did it with a reason. Because this part of the interview always gave me
the goosebumps and left me teary eyed seeing Rahman's spirituality and
humility. It's the way you take life.., imagine anyone making that
statement at age 40. I am going to write a post about the spirituality
around A R Rahman. I don't think he is just a music director, he is a
spiritual guru. Music happens to be his route to help us attain divinity.

Thanks Vithur.

Re: [arr] Re: ARR RGV combo a possibilty again

2008-04-30 Thread Adi
As much as I might want them to pair up I also feel that the possibility is
remote. Primarily because RGV has lost the faith of the producers by
consistently churning out senseless movies and worse - movies that did not
make commercial sense to the distributors and producers (I say that because
there are a number of senseless movies that are commercial hits!). And to
work with ARR, RGV will need to come up with a script that can win the
producers' trust back. And unless he has that financial backing he will not
be able to work with ARR. And let me now get out of my territory and tread
some dangerous parts by suggesting that ARR might not want to lower his fees
for RGV simply because of the risk that is involved in an RGV project
(Proof: Daud). Atleast if the movie fails, the money can be used for the
conservatory which is what ARR is doing by signing up endorsements (ToI),
tie-ups (Nokia) and doing live concerts within couple of days of each other
(Sharjah and ToI Chennai).

Having said all this, I would be the first one to queue up outside a
music store if the two paired up for a movie! :) I am a gone case, na?!! :)

[arr] Rahman may give music to kirtans of Annamacharya

2007-03-11 Thread Adi

http://www.greatandhra.com/movies/news/mar2007/reha_music.php

Tirupati: Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) wants to rope in composer A R
Rehman to give music to the famous Annamacharya kirtans.

Rehman would be the ambassador to popularise the kirtans among the youth.
So we are planning to give the Rehman touch to at least some of the kirtans
so that it would have an impact on the youth, said officiating director of
project Bhuman Subramanyam Reddy Saint poet Annamacharya had composed nearly
32,000 songs in praise of the Lord of which only 12,000 are available.

TTD would be observing the 504th death anniversary of Annamacharya from
March 15 to 22. A spiritual-cultural event has been arranged at Tallapaka,
the birth place of the poet in Kadapa district, where nearly 1000 students
from Annamacharya Engineering College would take part in a community
devotional singing programme.

[arr] Connect: Rahman, Mozart and 1771

2007-02-15 Thread Adi

Hi,

A quiz question for all you Rahman fans out there!

Connect: Rahman, Mozart and 1771

Any guesses?

Well, let me give you the answer.

*Rahman* owns a car (Toyota Innova is a car or SUV?) whose registration
number is *1771*. And the connection between *Mozart* and 1771 is: (taken
from this link: http://www.mozart2006.net/eng/id/15780/direktlink.html)

*Mozart's Biography*
*1771*
* *
*Commissioned to write an opera for the Milan Carneval of 1772/1773
(Lucio Silla K. 135), father and son returned to Salzburg on March 28th,
1771.*
* *
*For 138 days they remained in the city on the Salzach, before once again
leaving for Milan. There, on the occasion of the marriage of Archduke
Ferdinand to Princess Maria Ricciarda Beatrice d'Este of Modena on October
17th, 1771, Mozart's Ascanio in Alba K. 111 was performed.

On December 15th, 1771, they returned to Salzburg. Just one day later,
Mozart's lord and patron, Prince Archbishop Sigismund Christoph of
Schrattenbach, passed away. Mozart's Serenata dramatica Il Sogno di
Scipione K. 126 was performed in honor of the new prince archbishop,
Hieronymus Count Colloredo. This change in the political tide - Prince
Archbishop Hieronymus was a strict, uncompromising and, in artistic matters,
unenlightened ruler - rapidly had a noticeable effect on Mozart's
travel activities.*

Isn't this an amazing discovery? Thanks to my blog friend: Ramanan. He blogs
at http://dandanaka.blogspot.com and also thanks to Pyarilal of
www.pyarilal.com fame.

Is this just a coincidence? Or is there any truth to this discovery?

Love,
Adi.

on the rehearsal day itself when he met the Maestro! I couldn't agree
with him more! :) Hey Mugilan, if you are reading this, lets connect
up! :)

Love,
Adi.

I bet this sounded nothing less than divine when performed live.
Pure masterpiece and a lot of room to improv live too, I guess. I
really hope they play this song when Rahman comes to Toronto next
Spring, because that is when I am going!

Some of us had the good fortune of listening to the rehearsal and
  this song sounded phenomenal. Sukhvinder Singh sang brilliantly;
 with
  a lot of fervour.

   Sakhi Aayo Re...

Simple yet intricate, mesmerizing yet catchy. Only
 Rahman...only
   Rahman

Despite terrible sound quality, did you guys notice the
 intricate
keyboard playing by Rahman throughout the song? When
Sukhwindar
 sings
the jan janana janana... part really fast in monotone,
 notice how
Rahman plays the keyboard really fast and intense in some raaga
 as a
counter melody backup, most notibly during the second
 repetitions of
the stanza (could not identify raaga yet due to poor sound, but
 could
be Madhuvanti?). SIMPLY MINBDLOWING!! The effect is
 nothing
short of divine. On top of that is the dancing two note piano
 loop that
runs throughout the song. You will hear that most when the
song
starts. And then, Rahman adds keyboard layers using different
 swaras
to create an absolutely incredible listening experience. God,
 please
let the CD release before Nov 8. I can't wait that long!
 AMAZINGLY
BRILLIANT SONG, and despite the weaving intricacies that run
 throughout
the song, the melody, rhythm, and instrumentations are all very
 simple,
folkish, and catchy. Only Rahman.only Rahman..

And I love how the percussion is added in the middle. Very
 typical and
awesome of Rahman to add layers of instruments and percussion
as
 a song
progresses. Love the emphasis on the dhaga with added volume on
 many of
the transition stanza zonesfeels like a live
 performance.

Forgive my premature enthusiasm before the actual release of
the
album. Aayo Re is a MODERN CLASSIC along with Piya Ho. I
 love the
rest of the songs too..pure and beautiful.

   This manonly Rahman..only Rahman.
