RE: [arr] Revisiting Parthaale Paravasam Album

2009-12-13 Thread S, Karthik
The fact of the mater is KB killed PP album in its birth itself. The Audio
release just 3 and half days before the film released. The film was a dud. It
was a feast for ARR haters those days to trash him even more vigourously as the
film failed due to its horrible content. Added to that not all the songs were
public pleasing and hence the new sensation HJ and u1 were put in comparison
with ARR...as you all know IR was always there for comparison as far as the
media was concerned.

Great review ARRvind! Like many, I too had high expectations on Parthale
Paravasam.

KB sir has always strike me as a director with a good sense of music and like
you rightly pointed out, he's one of the few directors who is meticulous about
song pciturisations. Plus, with the winning association of KB-ARR (who can
forget the minblowing Duet?), expectations for PP were sky high!
Unfortunately, for some reasons, the movie just failed to strike a chord with
the public.

To tell the truth, I wasn't quite fond of PP's music when it was released. I
always regarded the album as one of ARR's weaker compositions. Nevertheless, a
few months ago, I had the oppurtunity to listen to the album...and I just felt
like slapping myself for rejecting it years back! What do I say, the whole
album was just refreshing and amazing! And thanks to you now, I'm once again
reminded of the joy I've encountered through the album!

K. Balachander( KB), a lengendary and veteran south indian film maker, who
introduced ARR to the world of Tamil music through Roja, roped in him again
with ultra high expectations for his highly ambitious 100th movie Parthaale
Paravasam. Every department in the crew seemed to be perfect. R.Madhavan,
Simran, Sneha, choreographer- turned-actor Raghavendra Lawrence,
lyricist/actor Vaali, comedian Vivek,,...all stars glittered the casting
department. Unfortunately for KB, the movie turned out to be a damp squib at
the box office. But nevertheless, thankfully though, the movie is remembered
even today ONLY because of its music by the whizkid.

  Ada Moondrezhuthhu Harini, Karthik

A supposedly peppy song neither impressed nor disappointed me
personally. It has got its share of likability and disappointments. While the
audio part is very neat and clearly done, the visuals are sorely disappointing!
.Both the actors(Maddy and Simran) look very pale and dull in this song.
However, its only the trio ARR - Harini - Karthik, put in hard efforts to
thump up the beats and they succeed too. The lyrics by Vaali are another plus
point. His lyrics revolves around the word Love and say it in different ways
to convey the word. He creates the female as a Guru and her beloved as her
Shishya (Disciple). A kind of time pass song for the average listeners.

Kaadhale Jayam Balram, Chitra

Yet another melody churned out by the king. Again, i feel the
visuals could have been better. A fresh sounding Balram makes a decent start
and even excels alongside the veteran Chitra. The melody quotient of this song
is very high with small tinges of classical harqats by the melody queen Chitra.
She is one of those blessed singers, who, by the very presence, would give a
new dimension to any song. Listen to her Naan...Vendiya Varangalai Varavil
Paarkiraen.. .Unn Varavil Paarkiraen.. . lines and you can't stop loving her.
ARR makes use of many traditional instruments and create a perfect rhythm.

Parthale Paravasame -- Raihanna, Ganga, Febi Mani, Kanchana, Poornima

ARR's long-time troop singers including his own sibling croon this chorus
situational track where the lead actor Madhavan is being chased by a host of
girls and falling for his charm ! Vaali's lyrics are convincingly witty and
naughty and the singers keep the spirit going on till the end. Rahman's genius
can be profoundly observed in the interludes with some unexpected violin
strings . Wonder who mouthed the word Thappichhukko. .. towards the end of
each charanam(Stanza); his name is left uncredited.

24Nov09
“India and Hungary are very close to each other”
Almost 900 film scores, 5000 film songs, countless discs — a dizzy amount of
work stands behind IlaiyaRaaja. The most wanted composer of the Indian film
industry is a relatively frequent guest in Hungary: as friend and as colleague,
he is in touch with several Hungarian jazz musicians, from time to time he also
resorts to the help of the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra. He has recently been to
Budapest again.
Csider István Zoltánhttp://cellovolde.com/, Le Marietta|
Népszabadsághttp://nol.hu/lap/kult/20091118-nincs_ket_egyforma_atkeles| 2009.
november 18.

One tries to imagine Indian film composers very rarely, but still: we had
imagined IlaiyaRaaja exactly like this. Bright eyes, friendly face and the
obligatory glasses. He received amicably the journalists of Népszabadság in an
elegant, stylish hotel room, after offering them a seat, he almost disappeared
in a giant armchair. During the conversation there was a bleak smile on his
face, even when we were asking him about his ex-disciple, the composer to the
soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire, A. R. Rahman and his success in Hollywood,
or about Rahman at all. Smiling and correct, he refused to answer by saying
everybody can do what he’d like to do, and well, it wouldn’t be elegant to talk
about a fellow. “And anyway, would a Hungarian journalist talk about other
Hungarian journalist colleagues?”, he asked, and it could be seen he was sure
of getting a negative answer.

Right from this saw we that IlaiyaRaaja doesn’t know the Hungarian, to a bit
extended level: the European press relations. Which is, however, a good thing.

The most productive composer of the Indian film industry came to Budapest to do
the post-production of his newest film score which had been recorded in July
with Miskolc Symphony Orchestra conducted by László Kovács, the mixing was done
at the Hungarian Radio’s studio with the help of Dénes Rédly, sound engineer.
But why had he chosen a Hungarian symphony orchestra for the records? The two
countries are fairly far away from each other…

“India and Hungary are actually very close to each other, the national
tricolors differ only in one tone of color,” he answered laughing, but then
turned to talk seriously: he thinks Hungarian musicians can compete anytime
with other countries’ artists. In his homeland there are no symphony orchestras
at all. In Chennai where he lives, there are excellent musicians playing on
strings, playing on wind instruments but they’re never organized to one
orchestra: setting up this kind of ensembles has no tradition there.

When IlaiyaRaaja had been in Budapest around 2000, he had gotten to know Attila
László jazz guitarist-composer. He had liked the compositions of László so much
that he had asked him to work together. In August, this year the Hungarian
composer traveled to Chennai with Béla Lattman, bassist and János Nagy, pianist
to play for the recording of the Indian master’s 882th film score.

A series of coincidences had led IlaiyaRaaja to the profession of music, for
that later his goal could be defined: once he would be music director. When he
had stepped into the field of film-making, composing had had just a functional
role in the Indian film industry, there had been far less spiritual content,
and the variety of music had had much room for improvement, too. This probably
had derived from the working method of composers, indeed from the relations
among musicians. Raaja had found something important for him in Western music,
he had started to play the guitar, the piano and the violin, and he had been
the first to use Western instruments, indeed unknown genres in his
compositions. Just to mention some examples, pop, jazz, rock and roll, bossa
nova and flamenco had gained grounds on the Indian screen by his work. And it’s
not an irrelevant feat of arms that he had been the first Asian artist to
compose a symphony for the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Raaja said, in the beginning, if something hadn’t worked out as he had wanted
it, he had become impatient with his musicians. Afterwards, by more and more
spirituality moving into his compositions, this gradually had disappeared.

When asking him about the method of composing — by thinking that a work of life
like his (more than 5000 film songs and almost 900 complete film scores are
signed by his name) is a result of an effective method of composing — he
answered: composing is not a question of will or ambition for him. It doesn’t
need to be that.

Music is born mentally, in the soul, one doesn’t think about it too

I paid 2000 Rs of my hard earned money to watch this show. I am huge AR Rahman
fan and have seen two more of his live shows.
I am used to the substandard level of service that is offered in India. Any
kind of service. We don't have proper facilities anywhere in this country to
hold an event together for any number more than twenty thousand people. For
example Internation Cricket matches played in India. Have you been to any? No
stadium in India can boast of a descent parking facility for ten thousand
cars(now if you have a stadium for 50K people you would need it right?). TO be
able to park conviniently and to take it of and leave easily itself is not
possible. Let alone expect reserved seating, hygienic and versatile top of the
line snacks and toilet facilities. All this for the richest cricketing body in
the world.

Now coming back to the AR Rahman show, the organisers are purely cashing in on
AR Rahman's market to make money. Rapport Global thinks that if the Stage and
the SOund is good(sound has always had a problem, since the my first show in
2004) then they are world class. Its just a plug-in-plug-out stage and
organiser needs to understand that stage alone does not determine if the show
is world class.

I have a few questions proping up in my mind.
(1) For a Brand like Rahman why do you need to coloborate with MARG to donate
funds for AR Rahman foundation and Sakhti Foundation.
Even if Rahman had done the show directly for Shakthi, the money would have
come. Was collaborating with MARG so essential, taking 50K odd people for a 12
hour pacakage(total time to travel to-and-fro).

(2) People pay money for the event that is promised. Not to see MARG
advertising it self to 50K tired people(remember we are told no water bottles
allowed but later everybody seemed to have one and people like me who adhere to
ruled were idiots). When the program was promised to start at 6:30 PM why dint
they start atleast after the MARG PR excercise. From 7:00 to 7:25 people were
sitting like idiots. Tired and Hungry.

(3) Extremely unproffessional not to have a Anchor for a show of this
magnitude. Imagine 50 K people waiting and there is no show anchor, no
introduction to songs, singers. Shocking.
Most of the Junta dint know that AR was singing Fiqrana or what. Please
organise more professionally. Introduce singers and Pieces. Treat the audience
with respect.

(4) The way back was another chaos with buses waiting in queque to leave the
areana. The wait was for more than an hour. People sitting on the floor of the
bus and what not. I reached home at 3 AM. Can't See a good reason why only MARG
could do this.

(5) The barricades dont work!!! I paid for my ticket but I sat or rather stood
with people who dont seem to have paid or many of the people with 300 hundred
rupee tickets landed in this part of the arena. The screens were not clear at
all.

That for the arrangments, to the music part. This sequence of songs has already
been heard t the Times of India launch in Chennai Last year. The Jaage hain
start and move to Khal Bali. Unless you have a fresher approach what was the
need to do the same thing again. If Rahman wants to mix songs and does not want
the language to be barrier that is great. ALthough many complained about
Telugu(was it a dress rehearsal for the Hyd show?) and Hindi songs being played
to a largely tamil audience, am ok as long as they take you thru the song by
introducing it and taking people along. Certainly not the way it was done. Mr.
Rahman has also moved away from the keyboards to being only a singer on the
show. He dint seem as intersted as his earlier shows. But very kind and
generouse himself. Did the backup singing for Maula when Javed ALi was singing
and also wished everyone a safe journey back home.

I am just as big a AR Rahman fan as many of you. But dissapointed by the
quality of the show. In online to Rahman if you are listening respect the
audience.

If gopal or any other Rahman Army people are listening to this. Try to change a
few things.

But, do all of us know who KV is ? K. Vishwanath, who probably made Sagara
Sangamam (salangai Oli...probably the best ever film made by any one according
to kamal) , Swathi Mukthyam and..most importantly SANKARABHARANAM (I guess many
know what this movie means to music)...

God, I am thrilled...I never expected tis but always dreamt that one day ARR
should do a movie with KV..

IR produced some immortal scores for KV...hope ARR does the sameThis
project has to materializeARR can skip a couple of hollywood/Bollywood and
other dud projects for a movie with KV..

My only wish to God is KV should be atleast half as good has he was then, in
terms of creativity.

Music maestro A.R.Rehman is all set to make a music album in Telugu under the

I am doing a film in Telugu after a long time for Pawan Kalyan’s Puli,” he

For me Pudhiya Mugam is the film where I had the huge huge expectation and it
surpassed it in leaps and bounds. Guys, I belong to Aug 15, 1992 cadre of ARR
fan school. Afte Roja and after knowing that ARR is not a 60+ oldie but a 23
year old lad who is just few years elder than me, I had expectations on Pudhiya
Mugam, like anything. Infact for no other film I had such a high expectations
till today. ARR was still relatively less known among my circles and those days
cassettes where the ones which carried ARR songs. I know how I pestered my
Audio shop walla regarding this film, when he did not even know what I was
talking about again and again. I did not have permission to spend Rs. 50 for
just 6 songs in a cassette . So I decided that I will spend Rs. 18 in recording
PM songs along with Anna Malai (I am a Rajni fanatic also), Chembaruthi and
etc, in one of my old and empty TDK cassette. I remember, that after noon when
brother (3 year younger)was waiting near railway station for me just to tell me
that the music is mind blowing. He had heard it hours before me. I can still
recollect the kind of feeling I had while listeing to PM a sense of reassurance
that indeed ARR whom I started adoring is indeed a genius.

Netru illadha maatram to me is the best ever ARR song. Best ever. Thee
Thee, Enuyir Thozhi all would come next , but this song for me is some thing
that has gone deep into my soul.

2.
The album that disappointed me the most is E20U18. The media reports and hype
around this movie did not justify the end product. AM Ratnam shouldn't have
hyped it so much.

Answer to Question No 1.

The old music peace is not a remix kind of a thing. It was specially created
for this song, though I did not see the bit being used properly while
picturizing.

Q No - 2

It is a great song..I mean it..great song. I took notice of this song almost
after 2 years of its release...I used to skip this ong. It is a single song. I
realized the beauty of the song only after seeing it on the screen. The
situation for this song is like this...
the hero..in the middle of a dark night goes thru the woods to his girl
fiends house, who is gaurded by several goons belonging to her village...the
first melody will signify this situation

The second melody comes when the hero meets the girl and the girl is surprized
that he has come inspite of heavy security...she is still under fear...just
nitice the melody and the songs flow...

The last part of the song is a sixer...it is the expression of the joy of the
hero who has accomplished the impossible..of having ventured into the girls
village all alone and come back safely after seeing her.

Imagine guys...ARR composed this song before the song was shot and
picturized...he must have visualized all this situations and composed it...true
genius at work.

wonderful lyrics this song have. no doubt that Vairamuthu also won national

I will answer the 3rd question because its such a lovely song which is

song is about the Srilankan tamils leaving their hometown (Mangulam
town in the movie) because of Army raid and it explains the plight of
their journey amid the bomb shelling and air raids.

Here's my attempt on the translation:

 Give us farewell, our land
The homes where the ocean beats down to the doorstep
 Palm tree forests, birds nest.
Will we ever get to see you again?
We buried the smiles in our lips
We buried our lives within our bodies
We embark on a journey just as skeletons.

Even if its in tatters, will there be a comfort like a mother(land)'s
 lap.
Even if you went to heaven, will you get the freedom of your home town.
Here's the nation where we opened our eyes.
Where will be the place when we close our eyes.
We part with you.. Rivers.. we will return if we survive..
We will return is our motherland calls us back.
Oh land that was born behind a curtain of tears.
We see you one last time

We lost our music to the cries of the infants.
We buried our land when the sun went down
At dusk we were on the flowers
At night we were torn by the thorns
Ocean waters, birds - we will meet you if we are alive
Sky and Mountains - we will meet you if we are alive
We are going away with little burdens in the head and more in the
 heart..

Personally my favorite in the movie would be Vellai Pookal which prays
for Peace in Srilanka and all over the world.. Let the song come true
 very soon.

What a marvel by Rahman and the guitars.. awesome

I have dedicated my perfomances in the wild card round to ARR sir and all his

Of course, only one finalist will be selected from the current 5 contestants,
and this would be based on audience votes. Do watch the show, and if you like
my performance, I request you all to support me by voting for me. Even if I do
not go on to become a finalist, the music shall continue always :)

To vote, sms SS18 to 57827

Multiple votes for the same contestant are allowed.

Do watch today's episode at 9 PM IST or if you miss it, tomorrow at 1 PM.

I'll post my experiences on the show, and the amount of influence sir's music
has had on me, after i'm done with the show. Been ages since I posted to the

I have to say this is got a lot of Rahman's flavor in it but it is unlike
anything. Jiya se Jiya have two versions in which i like the one which rahman
himself sung. My pick of the album is Kural. i am 13 and i live in the US. once
i heard this, i had a new thing going on. i wanted to learn some of the
kurals written by thiruvalluvar. my mom was proud of me and when she listened
to it, she absolutely loved it. Blaaze has outdone himself although i could not
recognize who the female singer was. Mann Chandre was very captivating. i liked
it but it was third after jiya se jiya (2nd). The rest are only music which are
great when you want to relieve yourself. i listen to himalaya practically
everyday when i am about to sleep. not joking. for those who have not heard
this, please do listen to it.

Satyajit ray won an Honoury award. Bhanu Athaiya share her award for Costume

ARR has won all alone for Best Score. So he becomes the first and only Indian

will be given first before coming on to the best score. In that case Resul
would be first Indian to bag BAFTA, overcoming ARR by minutes..

I mean, I want to reduce too much of Dhrishty(Bad omen coming out of too much

ARR can use his website arrahman.com to answer some of the filtered queries,

You know what, 95% of the interviewers in media are not aware of most of the

Subject: [ARR] If I were to Interview Rahman - Questions I would ask

I was just thinking if I were to interview Rahman, what question I wud ask.
Here's a part of the questions I thought of.. they are not exhaustive... some
more are to come.. hope you to add some... pls excuse me if i thought of a
question which was already answered :o)

1. You and Mehboob made a great combination, proved with the success of Bombay
and Vandemataram, why is that we do not see you working together again ?

2. Music Directors often say that they have n number of tunes in their
repository (one Telugu MD I heard said that he had 10,000 song tunes with him).
Is this the same with you as well. Or do you think music and tunes come
spontaneously ?

3. Why is it that whenever we listen to your music in different systems (eg.
Headphones, 5.1, Stereo etc), we discover new sounds that we had not heard
before in that song. For example in the song Ishq Bina Ishq Bina from Taal
you had mixed the sound of a CPU speaker between 5:15 and 5:17. Do you mix them
in your songs as a puzzle - to be solved by the listners ?

4. What according to you is the best music set-up to listen, discover and
enjoy your songs completely, with all the special effects.

5. When I was a teenager back in the 90s I saw one of your interviews on TV. In
that interview you had said that a lot of Directors are not happy with your
music, but the music went on to become hits. Did those directors ever come back
to you again ?

6. You had expressed your wish to do music for a film like Shankarabharanam.
Do you think that you will ever get to work on such a movie in today's trend of
commercial cinema?

7. We have seen many of your greatest tunes not getting the praise they deserve
because either they were part of a non-commercial movie of a one that flopped
(eg: Ada, Zubeida, Bose-TFH, Meenaxi, Tehzeeb, one 2 k 4, Gang Master, Palnati
Pourusham etc). But when you use any part of these overlooked songs in other
movies, critics slam you to be repetitive, how do you repond to it.

8. Do you think your style of music has indirectly put any pressure on other
music directors to keep-up with you and make music similar to yours ?

9. We all know that you are a very busy person, do you regularly listen to
music of other music directors by your instincts or when someone recommends it.

10. You had once said that you can make enough songs for 5 movies with the
Background music created in one movie. We see that some of the current music
directors are copying from your back-ground music (Eg: vishal shekar from
Swades to salaam nameste- my dil goes mmm.. caught by an active fan in the
yahoo group). How do you feel when other music directors copy your songs.
(We don't know how many of your background scores have inspired other MDs yet
:o)

11. Shivamani once said that you were the first music director in India who
insisted on printing the names of artists on the cassette and cd credits (eg
keyboard player, sound engineer, flute etc). That was a great gesture, but how
open was the music industry to this concept ?

12. How successful have you been in convincing the industry about the music
royalities issue ?

13. When the music of Lagaan, Jodha Akbar, Rang de Basanti, Zubeida, Thakshak,
The legend of bhagat singh etc... was released, early critics wrote them off
with comments such as Not expected from Rahman. But a few years after their
release, these albums are suddenly considered master pieces in Indian music
history. Do you think that this is the mind setup of the critics or if
something is wrong somewhere ?

Hi VIthur,

I responded to this mail as I knew that you know the area of Saligramam and
Vadapalani.

I am sorry, I do not know who Preeti is. Probably if she reads this group mail,
she can go to the Spenser's daily and get the CD. That is where I got it.

RE: [arr] Industry celebrates Rahman’s award

2009-01-15 Thread S, Karthik
With so many mails..I am slowly catching up

Ranadheera probably came at the time when Thambikku endha ooru came..I
happened to be in Bangalore and my elder cousin who introduced me to Rajni
films also took me to this kannada movie.

I liked the movie songs so much that I insisted him getting me the cassette...I
don't understand one bit of Kannada even now and asking some distant relative
to gift a expensive cassette (Rs.35/- or so at that time ) would be too much.
I still did that.

Only now I come to know that ARR is associated with the first ever film music
album I fell in love with.

See the connection...my ARR addiction should have started from there
itself..though I must admit Hamsalekha had done some wonderful original number
in that film (barring some LP's stuffs from Hero...)

Industry celebrates Rahman’s award

Deepa Ganesh

The shy keyboardist has come a long way, achieving a first for the country

Remarkable: A.R. Rahman has turned global attention on India

Bangalore: “I dedicate this to the billion people of India,” was A.R. Rahman’s
response to
winning the prestigious Golden Globe Award for Slumdog Millionaire. The
reticent musician, who
changed the sound and feel of Indian film music with his work for the film Roja
way back in
1992, bagged a Rajkamal for it then and there has been no looking back for him.

The Kannada music fraternity is jubilant about Rahman’s remarkable achievement.
“What can do us
more proud?” said Kannada’s most original music composer-lyricist Hamsalekha.
South Indian film
music has always been exemplary in terms of its discipline and sincerity, but
somehow it was
never spoke about or discussed in all these decades. “Rahman made it possible,”
says the
musician of unique perception. “He not only captured Bollywood, but got even
Hollywood to sit
up and take notice of us. I think he’s a phenomenon.”
Positive focus

What is important for Hamsalekha is the manner in which Rahman, in these times
of terror and
unrest, has turned the global attention on India on positive terms. “When
everyone is gazing at
us for the wrong reasons, Rahman has indeed salvaged our pride; it’s a historic
moment,” he
said. He recalled that Rahman was his keyboardist for Anjada Gandu and
Ranadheera, and added
that he had always been an admirer of his abilities.

“I cannot get over the young keyboardist who used to be at five keyboards
simultaneously,”
gushed leading playback singer Manjula Gururaj. She recalled the recording of
the Kannada film
Inspector Vikram during the time when Rahman was known as Dileep.

“We would stand in one corner of the studio and marvel at his talent. Luck
comes and goes, but
Rahman is the perfect example of how hard work and constant practise are
enduring,” she added.
“He was never careless about his work. He would never rest till it was done to
perfection and
with absolute dedication.”

“It’s a dream for any singer to work with Rahman. And it’s true of me too,”
admitted singer
Nandita, who has worked with leading composers and has bagged several awards.
“He has always
been ahead of his times. Listen to his Roja now, and you’ll know what I’m
trying to say. His
understanding of the audience is remarkable.”
Beyond cinema

Hamsalekha rates Rahman as the only Indian music director who is capable of
thinking on a
“broad scale”. He looks beyond the world of cinema, he said, and hence we find
him
collaborating with national players, global instrumentalists, theatre persons,
the ad world and
a range of people.

“His work is music plus technology plus marketing sense. Rahman has taken India
to global
heights; it feels like each of us has won the award.”

AR Rahman is a genius no doubt, but

—
AR Rahman has won his first golden globe and all of us are shouting from the
rooftop that he has done us proud.

http://passionforcinema.com/about/#iview

Yes indeed, but let me play the devil's advocate and ask you the question, how
many of us have actually listened to the soundtrack of SM? (I am not talking
about NRIs here). Many of us who have not listened to the soundtrack are now
predicting that he would even get an Oscar!

My opinion: AR Rahman is a genius and he does not need a Golden Globe to prove
that. I have not listened to SM so far, so I cannot form an opinion for sure if
he deserved it. What I can surely say is that he deserved the biggest of awards
for his score in Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Kannathil Muthamittal, Dil Se,
Alaipayudhe, Rang De Basanti, Minsara Kanavu, Kandukonden Kandukonden, Lagaan,
Swades, Bombay Dreams, 1947 Earth..the list is huge. Does a Golden globe change
our perception of him? We do not need a golden globe to recognize his talent.
But I notice that many of us (by us, I mean Indians) do not comprehend the
magnitude of talent that is available with us. All of us went ga-ga when
Elizabeth was nominated for 7 Oscars. Did we even think about what a talent
Shekar Kapur was/is, before Elizabeth? I remember only bad things said about
Shekar before Elizabeth. After Elizabeth, he has not won any award..does that
make him a lesser filmmaker? In my opinion, his 'Four feathers' and 'Golden
Age' were equally good films. And so were Mr. India and Masoom.

It is unfortunate that many of us badmouth our geniuses and need West to
recognize their contribution. I have several examples. Take any blog about
Kamal Hassan, there are at least a few comments which criticize him…that he
hams, that he wants to project only himself etc. A performace like Mahanadhi,
Guna, Hey Ram and Virumandi anyday can be compared to the best in the West(or
East). Yet we ridicule him saying that his ambition is to win an Oscar.

Ilayaraja..After Subramaniabharathi, this is one artiste who has never been
given his due(by the State, by the society at large). We are doing a big
mistake by not appreciating the kind of talent that Raja is. There are many die
hard fans of Raja and I am sure they would object to my opinion, but can you
justify not giving a Padmashree to a talent like this man, who has contributed
for the last three decades?

AR Rahman himself - Do you know that ARR was ridiculed for his background music
when he initially entered films? Just watch Roja now and you will understand
how his music enhances the film. Dil Se, 1947 Earth, Golden Age - a number of
films where the BGM has been exceptional.

K. Viswanath - The contribution of this genius to Telugu Cinema has never been
appreciated by the 'Neo Pan Indian' media and therefore his genius has never
come to limelight outside AP, and to some extent, Tamilnadu. At a time when
films all over India were nothing but Masala potboilers, he thought of
Sankarabaranam, a carnatic musical. He had the comprehension to rope in KVM for
music and the master stroke was to rope in SPBalu for rendition of songs.
Sagara Sangamam, Swathi Muthyam - such gems…!

I am not much aware of Malayalam films, but in whatever I have seen, Mohanlal
and Mamooty are no lesser than any talent that is ruling the world today.

And to top it all, Bachchan's over the top performance in Agneepath. After he
won the National Award for it, so many people criticised him. Yet today we are
praising Slumdog and from whatever I have seen bits and peices of it, it just
looks like a 'Classic over the top' Indian masala film.

Does it mean that the Golden Globe is not important..Let us put this in
perspective. The GG is important. In two aspects. Any recognition is
inspiration for an artist and therefore as a recognition it is important. Also,
a GG or an Oscar enhances the business potential of a film. It enhances
visibility for the GG/Oscar winner's other works. Once an Indian gets a Golden
globe or an Oscar, it opens a lot of business avenues for Indian filmmakers
across the globe. Mind you, these are two important benefits that we get from a
GG or an Oscar and I am not undermining that. Today the news is out that Taare
Zameen Par is out of the Oscar race. It is not in the top 9 shortlisted films
by the academy. With due respects to the academy and to the shortlisted other 9
films, Academywaalon, we respect your

technically speaking Doesn't Pt. Ravi Shankar have American citizenship when he

Also, India did not have a dual citizenship concept those days.

Still it could be that ARR is the first INDIAN composer to be nominated

Thats true..and for that matter..even SDM would not be considered as Indian
Entry...because it was not produced by any production house in India.

Regarding ARR being the first composer...it is false...because Pt.Ravi Shankar
was once nominated (for Gandhi) and if i am not wrong, another classical
musician (could be Ustad Ali Akbar Khan or Ustad Vilayat Khan) was also
nominated for some film made in 60s. I am not sure though.

One addition,

Vidhu Vinod Chopra was nominated in 1979 in the Documentary Short Subject

Also, technically, Water is not an Indian film. It was produced by a Canadian

RE: [arr] Jai ho and Zubeida link

2008-12-06 Thread S, Karthik
As per the film's script, Main albeli was set in 1947, that's why it is
having an altogether different type of music and arrangement

You are right about the arrangement, which was apt for those period. Few film
songs during those period had this arab feel to it...

I am pointing to the june itself .

The tune in the middle part for Mai albeli song leads to the Jao ho song
and vice versa.

Zubeida is probably one of the top 10 ARR albums and thans to ARR for reminding
us about that here.

A great loss to the neo sound and music industry of India. It is a personal
loss for many ARR fans like me for whom seeing Sridhar's name in the cassettes
and CDs would give them one more assurance that the sound inside is of
International quality.

May GOD rest his soul in peace.

RE: [arr] Re: ~~ARRchennaifans~~ Re: Chennai ARR fans - shifting to next spectrum of social service

2008-11-18 Thread S, Karthik
I have seen in IR group (Kamal Aakash can vouch) that they meet frequently in
some city and discuss about IR music. People present papers and research works.
One of my very close friends who is an ardent IR fan has visited one such
meeting.

I wish to take part in ARR fans meet and I would say that we can have our own
agenda. Only thing is we need to consider the following to slowly establish the
legacy of ARR.

1. We need to seriously start researching ARR's music and find his nuances.
Document them. Say for example ARR's period films, how is that it is different
from rest of the others and his own. What elements he brings in?

2. How does ARR manage great Post leuds and Preleuds. I am a mad fan of his
post leuds. The way he ends YUhi chala chal rahi or Thee kurivi song are
just droplets in the ocean.

3. How does ARR manage his music for different cultures with in India and now
accross world. ?

4. How does ARR employ classical music in his composition? Carnati and
Hindustani to large extend.

There can be numerous topics in which we can come prepared and talk and present
research papers. Only thing is some one needs to do this organizing task
diligently.

Karthik

I express my deep condolance on the death of one of the Maha Vidhwans in
Carnatic Violin Sri Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan. he is a genius in his own right
and people who have listen to him will agree that he is probably the pioneer in
taking carnatic classical music to the grass root level of the society, like
what we call B C centres.

As far as imaginations, what we call as kalpana shakthi, while playing any
raga in violin is concerned be was a uncrowned king. I am a big fan of him and
I really had plans to go for atleast one of his concerts this December.

[arr] Preserving the History of ARR

2008-08-21 Thread S, Karthik
The below conversation has kindled a thought. Are we preserving the history of
ARR. Is some one doing it? Are we obliged to do it?

Take the example of the VM program in Aah ahaa FM. We get so much of info about
ARR. Do we need to preserve them for future references.? I know Vithur does
that, but shouldn't those be documented for pointed references. There are lot
many infos on ARR floating around. Gopal is a live encyclopedia of ARR, but do
we really have one or do we really have any idea about those things?

ARR should think on these lines and people around ARR should do this. ARR has
become too big and too important to be ignored by the world history. All his
details have to be preserved.

Karthik

be proud if all these come to rahman..but..In Rahman's own words..He has just
started. Having given amazing songs, winning all possible awards, composing
albums such as Vande Matram,JGM,PFMB is not enough for musician and person like
Rahman. I beleive Rahman has moved into next most Important stage of his
life..with KM Musiq Conservatory, A.R Rahman Foundation, KM Musiq label, Music
rightsThese are going to be of great help to millions across the
globe..especially to those in our country.

All these awards, recognition would come in later stages of his life..He is just
40+ , Lets us all be proud and blessed that we are going to witness Rahman
acheive what no other person has acheived

You are right. The pattern of the violin is indeed like Toss the feather
That is a old Irish folk and thousands of people have used it, played it.

This is exactly why I love ARR as he as brought in a Irish folk and fused it
with a Tamil folk kind of a youth song.

This issue was discussed immediately after Sakkarakatti was release and people
had even given the links for various versions of this piece.

Rahman fan. Interviewer asks So did you think that you have to somehow get a
chance and sing for Rahman. Karthik replied, No No...I just wanted to see him
atleast once...I was such a crazy fan. I used to call the studios so many times
and usually the studio manager or someone picks and keeps the phone...It was
one of my cousin who was close to singer srinivas who got me that golden
opportunity to meet Rahman...It was purely by God's grace. When I met him, he
asked Do you sing? and I said yes and sang a song in front of him. He then
immediately said, You have a nice voice. why don't you choose singing as your
career. That was the moment, I left everything else and again started

- The opportunity that I got to sing for Rahman...That day was one of my
friends birthday...So we a gang of friends went out to a snooker parlour and
decided to spend till midnight and give a surprise birthday gift to our
friend...Those days Cellphones were not that popular and only one of our friend
had...Rahmanji was looking for some fresh voices to do a chorus and Singer
Srinivas was trying to reach Tippu, Harish Raghavendra, Gopalrao etc...When he
couldn't get hold of one of them he tried reaching my home number...My mom was
trying to reach my friend's cell phone but unfortunately couldn't reach as the
signal was so poor in the snooker parlour...Srinivas had atleast tried 8 times
to my home and my mom started literally crying because she knows how much
interest I was showing towards singing...It was at 11:45 when we came upstairs,
after 3.5 hours, i got to attend my mom's call and came to know about the call
from the studio..I took my bike and rushed t o the studio...I saw Javed Akthar
sir for the first time...The movie was Pukar and I had to sing with the chorus
with Tippu, Harish, and Dr.Narayan. That was my first recording and it just
happened in 30 mins and at around 1.00 am, I'm home...I couldn't just beleive
that I did a recording in Rahmanji's studio...I told all my friends but no one
beleived...Unfortunately, that song in Pukar didn't release. (Does anybody know
anything about this unreleased song?) Then I used to regularly do some chorus
with Tippu and Harish and I was singing Chorus for 1 year. Rahman always gets
confused in identifying Tippu and me. He always thought I'm Tippu...One day
during a chorus session, Rahman said, You...the guy without spectacles, you
stay there...others come out. That was me. I know he is going to ask me to
sing. I thought this is the opportunity and i have to prove myself else pack my
bags and go back to studies...He asked to sing a sad alaap.. I was singing and
he was guiding by playing the chords...He wanted more cry in the alaap and I
just forgot myself and started singing continuously, closing my eyes...After a
while, I opened my eyes to see everyone laughing...Rahman had already standing
next to me and said Good Job. You did well. Next day, he asked me to come to
the studio for a track. He said he is going to try something and also said if
it works well, he will use it. That was the song for the movie Jodi and the
song is Nendhukittaen Nendhukittaen. I was nervous but Rahman has a special
capability. He knows what technique to use to extract the work from the
singers. He sets the right mood to each singer. He started cutting jokes with
me and made me really comfortable before recording the song..It took me 45
minutes to complete the song. After the recording, he said, it's good, let's
see, if it works out, we will use it...This is how I got my first break with
Rahman...

The Girl Friend song in boys was really interesting. While working with

Subject: [arr] (SemiARR) TWSouls 12'th RAHMANIA concert in Pune ! Report !!

Hello All,

This is a brief report of The Wandering Souls concert Rahmania
performed in PUNE on July 26, Saturday evening. The lead organisers
were NU Event Mangagement company who launched their operations in
Pune with our concert.

If you have not checked the photos, kindly have a look at a bunch of
25 photos in our Yahoo group's Photo section !

In this concert, Kedar Bapat replaced Hrishikesh Ranade, except that
all the successful performers of TWS showcased their talent. The
famous Hindi actor Mr Raza Murad anchored the show admirably and
enthralled the audiance with his rich baritone voice and apt
sher-o-shairi.

The group performed under the able guidance of Anmol Bhave ( National
award winner for Best Sound Engineering ) all their hit songs and in
this performance, they added Kabhi Kabhi Aditi from JTYJN which was
performed very well by Ashutosh JOSH Joshi. A new voice Shashwat
from Symbiosis college ( he hails from Jaipur) performed Tu Hi Re
and 2 other songs and was well received by the audience. Pallavi
Paranjape again brought the house down with Maiyaa Maiyaa and
Chandralekha- (tamil).

The other successful members of the group consisted of Jasraj Joshi,
Swarali Joshi, Swarada Kulkarni, Rachana Phadke, Pinak Agte, Vivek
Kodilkar, Pravin Patil, Ajit Velankar, Satyajeet Kelkar, Mr Gaikwad (
on Live Shehnai ), Mandar and Tejas Lagvankar. Incidently Tejas has
left today to USA to persue MS in Computer Science. The group's loss
could be a big gain for some group in US for next 2 years :-)

Support backup was provided by Geetanjali Bhave / Prachi Lagvankar /
Nikita and many others. Digital Array sound system was provided by
Marzban Irani and it was managed by Nikhil Mulay. CHoreography was
managed by a 6 member SHINDE group who came down all the way from NASHIK !

THis was the group's 12'th performance and for next 7-8 months the
group is planning to take a break to work on new songs / new
performance format and most important, to look after individual
careers, because trying to reach close to the original Rahman Sound
was a mighty challanging task and very demanding job at times.

We are also looking at a possibility if other RAHMANIA-like performing
groups can come together in nearest future for a BIG event somewhere
in India to celebrate RAHMAN's MUSIC ! Let's see..

On behalf of The Wandering Souls, here is a big THANK YOU to all our
patrons, well-wishers, audience and all the RAHMANIACS in this group
for giving us constant encouragement. Thank you GOPAL and Vijay, our
constant supporters, we dedicate this 12'th episode to you !

To our GURU AR Rahman... you are and will always remain our source of
inspiration. We retained the soul of music and gave the best to
our audiance...

We will be back soon..

Best regards

2008-07-25 Thread S, Karthik

This song became very famous, and I started getting calls from a lot of people.
Once my car was halting near Teynampet Signal ( CHENNAI ) . There was a person
who was standing in a cycle near my car. he saw me through the mirror of the
car, and spotted me . he asked me to waive the glass down. he said, ' Sir. The
way you have written lyric esp those words, Magane Magane ( Oh Son, Oh Son
) . after hearing to it, I have started crying very badly. I started getting
memories of my father. You should live for long. . I cannot forget the praises
that I got from that cyclist , in tha t teynampet Signal. This is more than a
National Award to me. What more does a writer need ?

Vithur,

You got it wrong. Here VM said that MSV told him that once when when MSVs car
was standing in some place a person got doen from his cycle, requested MSV to
down the window mirror and said, Sir, the way you sand Magane, in that song
reminded me my father VM said , of an artist no award is big enough in front
of these sort of appreciative expressions from people.

Note, I only listened to this part and one of IRs unheard masterful tune from
the film Karimettu Karuvaayan...Truely this program is a boon for music
listeners. Sad I could listen to only when I drive home from office.

Subject: [arr] Vairamuthu Neram ( Thai Manne Vanakkam, iruvar .)

In Vairamuthu Neram today,

1.Chittathatinal Konda Pithathinal ( Duet )

Myself and A.R. Rahman worked very hard with strenous effort for the film
Duet. A.R. Rahman selected some lyrics from my works titled, Thiruti
Ezhudiya Theerpugal ( Rectified Writings of Judgements). We were thinking of
who could be the best singer who can sing the same. This should come as a
Voice, and should also be in a tune. It should be mid way between the tune, and
the utterings of the words. So, we decided that instead of a singer singing
this, it would be better, if the hero himself could be used to narrate these
lyrics , and sing them, instead of a stand alone singer doing it. The Director
also accepted it. A. R. Rahman also accepted it. The Hero didnt want to accept
it, and was hesitant. We called Actor Prabhu to the Composing Studio. We asked
him to read the lyrics. He is elder to me, but would address me as Anne (
Elder brother ) . Pls read the poem yourself, or make it possible by someone
who knows better Tamil than me. I replied, No No. You are the successor of
Nadigar Thilagam ( Sivaji Ganesan) . It would be a great fame for me, if you
read this. You cannot corner yourself, as not knowing Tamil. . He told, that
he has studied in convent, and was apprehensive, but I insisted in him doing it.

He did a wonderful job in rendering it in the movie

2. Udal Mannukku ( IRUVAR )
Of all the movies of Maniratnam, I like Nayagan and Iruvar. I consider it a
very great opportunity to write lyrics for the film Iruvar. Because its a
periodical film. The film starts in the 50s, and ends in the 80s. During these
30 years, how the beauty of the language has changed, how the lifestyles have
changed., how the political system has changed, have been depicted very well in
that movie. I came to write in the 80s. , and the film gave me an experience of
writing songs for about 40 years. There was a beautiful story line, depicted in
that movie.

when MGR, wanted to utilise his very first chance in movies, what sort of song
would he sing, if he acts in a King, Queen movie. This sort of situation was
given to me by Maniratnam, and he wanted me to write lyrics for the same The
style of the 40s, and the 50s should be replicated in a movie, which has to be
screened in the 90s. I started practising and learning the style of the lyrics
that was used in those times. This is not a song, but its like a declaration.
There was a question, as to who would sing, or utter these lyrics in the movie
?. we all thought that , A.R. Rahman could do it himself. But he didnt want to
do it. Some people thought of making it done with the help of some play back
singers. That was also not accpted. Some people wanted me to do it myself. I
told them in a very polite and decent fashion, that my voice neednt come for
the Film Industry. Finally, Maniratnam decided that if uttered by Arvind Swamy,
it would be great. I started teaching Arv ind Swamy this song.

 Udal Mannukku, Uyir Thamizukku.

I consider it a great blessing, if this song could be added to the Lists of
famous writings on Dravida Kazhagam

3. Aalakanda ( Sangamam )

More than the singers, its always the Music Director, who sings the maximum
number of times, a song. Right from the time, the song is composed, till it is
finished, its the Music Director, who takes the strains in giving it a complete
touch. Its the

Uyire - Bombay )

In Vairamuthu Neram,

En kadhaley ( Duet )

When the tune of the song was ready,,, I asked Rahman, Enna pa ( Oh brother )
, How come you composed such a tune. Only people who have been in deep love can
compose such tunes. . for which he replied, Yes . I am also in Love. I am in
love with my music. . The way, SPB had sung the lyrics, gave me tears, and, I
caught his hands , and thanked him so much. The rendition of the song, gives
such a wonderful effect, full of remorse and feelings.

Uyire ( Bombay )

This song is the best song , that would have moved me in my life ( for the
lyrics which I have written ). The speciaility of this song, is the way, in
which it is done. Its like a situation, where the male singer comes and sings
and finishes it and goes. And then the female singer comes, and she does her
rendition and makes us feel, that she has done much more better than the male
singer. Its such a wonderful song, that it refreshes , I listen to it.

Ennavale ( Kaadhalan )

A song, for which lyrics were liked me so much next to the old song ( Pavadai
Dhavanayo ... Old song ) and which was in those lines is Ennavale from
Kaadhalan...

 Anbe Anbe ( Jeans )

A song which I wrote after seeing the actress is this song. I saw her in the
stage. she was very simple. She was like a damsel, bathed in milk. There was
some depth in her beauty, and no pomp or show. There was some attraction.

Idhu varai paartha Pennil, Nee dhan Nee dhan azhagi a yadi

There was so much of beauty that made me write those lyrics.

Hey Karthik,

I know u very well. In 2005 we ARR fans met at Anna Tower park beside Iyappan
Temple. Did u remember that? Myself, you, Vinoth Raju, Baskar, Guruprasad etc.,

We enquired at A.M.Studio itself. They gave us the Audio Media Education Pvt
Ltd., Office number. Thats it.

I got an information from one of ARR at chennai fan who knows the close
associates of ARR said that a new website gonna get launched soon. Registration
can be done in that.

I don't know how far this info is true. But as I observed from the consecutive
interviews of ARR, he himself mentioned initially 150 students are gonna be the
maximum strength and he got 300 applications so far.

sribalaji.

I don't know how many of you know this info...AR Rahman has actually used some
of the tunes from his Khel Khiladi Ka movie and made it sound much better...I
mean, many didn't like Super Police as such...But people liked other songs that
were made out of Super Police tunes !!! Some of them are listed below. Also,
I found the lyrics was so worse in Super Police which could be the reason for
not making the songs a big hit.

Song - Pakka Dilbar Jaani from Khel Khiladi Ka reused as Sattena
Nanainthathu Nenjam in Kannathil Muthamittal...(KM song had better lyrics for
the same tune)

Song - Babu Lo Chal Gaya from Khel Khiladi Ka reused as Yaaro Sunlo Zarra
in Rangeela.

We can also understand how lyrics can spoil such beautiful tunes...

Just see the tempo of the Muththu Muththu sirippu part and the airtel tune

Just because some bald fellow comments in aTV program (Baski in Vijay TV), do

Hi All...

To say that 'Rahman has never copied' is not that right...

There are some instances where he has lifted or been inspired by other
musical works and tunes and has used it in his compositions.

One such example is the Airtel tune. It is lifted from a song by the
maestro Ilayaraja for the film: Devadai

This link has that song...
http://tamilcinema.dk/songs/songview.asp?songid=1234
http://tamilcinema.dk/songs/songview.asp?songid=1234

There is a chorus line which goes:
Muthu muthu sirippu... (2 or 3 lines)

and then...
Pakkathile neruppaa... (2 or 3 lines)

Another example: The song O Bhaavre... (Daud) is inspired from the
song O Saathi Re...

Thanks.
Chandra

FW: [arr] ARR critised by Sam (ARR Fan) - Mails Collected by Nitin (Other ARR Fan)

2007-03-27 Thread S, Karthik
True
Sam seems to be among the few black sheeps who are freely roaming around this
largely democratic group. It is quite evident from the mails and the links
posted that by this time Sam might have eaten humble pie or bitten dust several
times in his life.

Atleast by now he must realise that people have come to know about his and he
must just keep quite and watch what's happening. Obviously he does not belong
to us and I am sure if he opens his dirty mouth once again, in no time majority
of us will demand his outster from the group and I am confident that Gopal will
oblige.

SAMdid you see the SAMples posted here...you have lost your color...you are
the cunning fox...EXPOSED.

With no Regards,
Karthik

Great work, Nitin...!!! We've to identify the poeple like this from our group
and start ignoring their comments (not by affending them; but by not replying /
responding to their comments).

See, following are the comments made by SAM (one of our group member). Many of
the movies have got various awards including National Award. What does SAM
think? He is a great critiser or all others in the country are fools?

SAM, atleast after seeing this mail, please stop making false comments on ARR

RE: [arr]Manidha Manidha -- a Retrospective: An old interview with Srinivas

2007-02-08 Thread S, Karthik
This album Manidha Manidha is a true keyboard classic of ARR. It is unlike any
Telegu film songs and that's the reason why it did not reach the masses. The
hello hello song is such a veriety that in those days , the detail changes in
every interlude and lines of the songs - I mean the instrumentations etc..was
really great.

Kisu Kisu namakkul is another wonderful song...Listen to these songs now guys
, and you will understand what some other music directors are trying to do with
their key board and gadgets.

These numbers of ARR are good candidates for Remix and only few people have
heard it and if some one or ARR itself remixes them and markets well it will
definitely be a huge hit.

Gangmaster was one of ARR's first two original Telugu movies. The
movie was a remake of the Mahesh Bhatt-directed Hindi film, Sir. It
starred Dr. Rajshekhar, Naghma. The other movie was Super Police. The
music for both released on Magnasound almost simultaneously in late
1994. I am not sure which movie released first. Gangmaster was dubbed
into Tamil as Manitha Manitha.

The track listing is as below

Film: Gangmaster

1. Nagumomu (Mano, Chitra)
2. Misa Misalade (S P Balasubramaniam, Chitra)
3. Hello Hello (S P Balasubramaniam, Chitra)
4. Baddaragiri Seethammakku (Mano, Sujatha)
5. Kila Kilala Kokilala (Mano, Minmini)
6. Aa Siggu Eggulenthavaruku (Mano, Swarnalatha)

Manitha Manitha

1. hello hello anburani (Mano, Chitra)
2. kisu kisu namakkul (Mano, Chitra)
3. innaal oru ponnaal (Mano, Sujatha)
4. kiliyerandu konchikolla (Mano, Minmini)
5. Nee etty etty thottuvachuka (Mano, Swarnalatha)
6. enna mogam kannamma (Mano and Chitra)

I guess ARR music is Muthu is used verbatim in one kannada film by

infer that it is indeed a remake of Muthu...So we already had a film in Kannada
with ARR music..so this one should be the second,

Hi Rags, Being a kannadiga myself, I too hate most of kannada films.
Most of Kannada films in past 6-7 years are filled with violence and
plain love stories. But currently there are good directors like
Nagatihalli chandrashekar, Prem, Nagabharana, kavita lankesh, Ramesh
etc. who can do justice to ARR's music. I think ARR is playing safe
side by reusing his old tunes. If his music is accepted by Mass
Kannadiga's (which is dominated by kannada's Rahman, Gurukiran's
music) then ARR can do full fledged music with these directors IMO.

and BTW Minchina vota, accident, muthina-haara are my
favourites yaar!! Those were the gone days... Wish those Shankar
Nag, Ananthnag, Vishnuvardan, puttana kangal days come back in
kannada!...

Now all that happens out in Kannada industry is wrapping up a

IR has scored 800 movie. Hold on. MSV has scored for 1500 Movies
(oopps). But at the same time quantity doesn't matter

This is a mith..See, total films created tduring the period of 50, 60,
and 70s did not even cross 75 films per year...It is only during the those
period that MSV TR were at peak. Only during 80s when films started to base
their stories in rural locations, film production started booming and more than
100 films were produced /year consistently. IR's 800+films are listed in IRs
group and my guess is its nearing 900 or crossed it. IR still scores in all te
four south Indian language. I think 1500 for MSV is a bit inflated figure but
if experts could clarify I will be thankful.

[arr] Bappi da bluffs...IR did more films.

2006-12-04 Thread S, Karthik
I also hold the Guniess record for doing 37 films in a single year.

Absurd...IR did around 56 films in 1984 or 1986..I do not know exactly buy all
thru the three years from 84 to 86 he was doing more than 50 films a year and
max being 56 Iguess.. Also, you know what IR did BGM for every moview..

what guiness record is bappi talking about God..IR in his career of 32
years has composed for almost 1000 films and non film albums and BGMs for all
the films...

The problem with media and most people in India is that we neglect south and
its champions.. ARR is the only guy who could break the barrier. I thought
atleast now people and media will wake up and take notice of south and its
gems..but...I guess..still there are miles to go before that happens.

Appologise for bringing in IR here in ARR's forum..But the purpose was to set
the records straight.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/NEWS/City_Supplements/Lucknow_Times/Bappi_da_dhamaal/articleshow/712029.cms

Despite his flashy clothes and jewellery, Bappi Lahiri is no flash in the pan
musician.

Draw no parallels, Bappi da is simply Bappi da. What's more, he's a man who's
huge, not only in size but also in stature. In town recently to perform at
Lucknow Mahotsava, LT caught up with the Indian music industry's original style
bhai.

I am very selective about composing for films these days. With over 440 films
in 32 years to my credit, I think it's time to be choosy about what I lend my
name to. Sometimes I don't do a single film in a year, but on the flip side, I
also hold the Guniess record for doing 37 films in a single year. It depends on
what inspires me about the film and once convinced it surely gets the Bappi
Lahiri touch, says the flashy composer.

With Taxi No 9211 striking the right notes with the people, and a string of
similar successes following suit, Bappi Lahiri is definitely experiencing a
second coming. Composing for Ramu's Sholay was unique indeed. Unlike Don, the
songs I composed for this film are originals, not pepped up versions from the
old movie. All films I am composing for right now have original music truly
inspired by the film's subject. The audience will notice this in Mani Ratnam's
Guru, Ravi Chopra's Bhoothnath, Pyar Mohabbat, the new Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron
etc, he avers.

But that's not all he has up his sleeve. The projects he's particularly looking
forward to include a duet with Daler Mahendi and composing for KC Bokadia's
Govinda starrer Pyar Jhukta Nahin. Arre it's going to be an out and out
musical dhamaal! Can you imagine Daler and me singing together? It's the first
time both of us will come together to sing and I'm really looking forward to
it, he gushes.

Considering originality is such a big deal with him, what's his take on the
current music market? It's a matter of sustaining numbers, not originality. If
a song clicks with the masses and stays on for three months, it's certainly an
achievement for its lyricist and composer. But aaj kal yeh nahin hota hain,
even today songs from the '60s, '70s and '80s rule the roost. In my opinion the
only composer and singer capable of replicating the excellence of golden oldies
today is AR Rahman - he is a class apart, he muses.

Goad him about the TV talent hunt show he's on and how there's news of rigged
results and favouritism playing a role while picking winners on such shows, and
he is quick to take offence. No! No! that's rubbish, Sanchita won on merit not
because she is a Bengali! As far as the skirmishes on the show go, it's
Abhijeet and Alka battling it out, not me.

We'll take your word for it Bappi Da.

i dont think it is far fetched at all that Rahman is a potential
bharat ratna awardee . When MS , Lata Mangeshkar , Satyajit Ray and
Bismillah Khan have been awarded , I am very sure that Rahman who
has contributed greatly to the field of arts is definitely in the
race . get ur facts b4 u speak mr Aakarsh.
Hes just 40 . probably one day when he wins an oscar , u might take
back whatever uve said . I am sure a lot of sane minded Indians agree
with whatever i have said . Rahman is no less an icon compared to
Lata ji or MS amma or Ray da or even Kahn sahib . I remember vividly
in one interview in which Naushaad sahb himself admitted that Rahman
is a living musical genius of our times .
Aakarsh , u have an entitlement to ur views , and please dont be
dogmatic about it , i respect ur viewpoint but it is grossly unfair
to say that i insulted Ilayaraja ! puh leez dude , i respect the man
and his music . All i said was that Rahman's reach and knowledge of
application of music surpasses that of Ilayaraja , which is a fact .
I am not the only one saying this . Only a jaundiced mind would deny
this . Raja was a musical genius , but RAhman is a musical god .
Period .End of argument !
Chill out Aakarash and enjoy the music of Guru , i am sure u'll like

Today morning , i was just checking out the morning news
on cnn-ibn .
There was this poll for the greatest tamilian of all time . MS ,
Periyar , Abdul kalam , Rajni and Ilayaraja have been nominated .
No
nomination for the only and real maestro :( .

I dont know in what way Ilayaraja has contributed more than A R
Rahman for India or even in promotion of Tamil music in India (note
not TAmil NAdu) , I respect Ilayaraja , his music and his evergreen
melodies . But no way can he edge out Rahman for the prize of all

Sony music! Rahman is up there with the trinity of music , so what
if
he composes film music , his knowledge in music both carnatic and
folk , is unparalleled , his future works Inshallah will reflect
just
that . Wait till u guys see the opening song in Sivaji . I heard in
Tamil music history , no song has been
