The negatives of films have not arrived yet and the release of the film will be delayed, said Sanjay Bhutani, business head of BR Films, which is distributing the film in India. The film will be released on March 2 or March 9, instead of its earlier release date February 23. The Oscars will be given away on February 25 and if Water does bag the Best Foreign Language Film award, it will no doubt help its box-office prospects in India. The nomination to Oscars has already helped us in the marketing of the film, said Bhutani. I am sitting with my team to chalk up a strategy on releasing Water across India. Obviously, the film will not have a release like Dhoom: 2 -- or for that matter Baabul too -- because it is a different kind of film. I will however want maximum number of people in India to watch this film because of its great content, added Bhutani. BR Films acquired Water's distribution rights in India long before it was nominated as Canada's official entry for the Oscars. The film, set in the 1930s, highlights the plight of widows in Varansi then. Starring John Abraham, Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas, the film has been in the making for the last seven years. It ran into controversy after rightwing Hindu parties objected to Mehta shooting the film in Varanasi. Mehta's earlier film Fire too had run into controversy, because it touched upon lesbianism. The Uttar Pradesh government banned the shooting of Water in Varanasi in January 2000. If this film is not allowed to be shot it will be the end of democracy in India, Mehta told rediff.com then. It will show that the (UP) state government is being totally run by thugs, Deepa finally shot the film in Colombo, Sri Lanka, quietly. Five years after its production, it has begun creating waves in the international film circuit. After receiving an overwhelming response since it opened at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival, Deepa Mehta's Water has been riding on success. Having already broken box office records in Canada, Australia and Spain, Mehta's controversial film Water will hit American theaters on April 28. And after a long period of uncertainty about its India release, the film is finally headed for a theatrical release in India in mid-May. We had been talking to the distributors in the last 3-4 months as to when would we be ready for release. And it's just been finalized. I think they're looking at May to open it in India across 90 screens, says the director, Mehta. The film was shot secretly in Sri Lanka under the title Full Moon, after the production faced violent protests at the original location of Varanasi due to its subject. The story deals with the treatment of widows in India during the early 20th century, and has great performances from its cast which includes Seema Biwas, John Abraham, Lisa Ray and 8-year-old Sarala. The film circle is abuzz with Water being an Oscar contender. And Mehta could help but gush at the prospect: Yeah! There's talk about the Oscars. I think it's a little early but if it does qualify for that I'd be ecstatic because there are some performances in the film that are so mindblowing. Chances are Water will find a place not just in the Foreign Film Category at the Academy awards. I have been tracking IMDB's Water listing from the beginning. IMDB relies to a considerable extent on user submissions for its listings. That's one reason why movies that ARR has explicitly denied any association with, like Mahabharata, The Rebel, A/C and RGV's Sholay, appear in the listings. So, all that IMDB lists need not necessarily be the gospel truth. I am sticking out my neck to say, as things stand, its unlikely either T-Series or Saregama is sitting on the rights of Water's music or movie. I would, no doubt, be happy to be proved wrong but preferably with substantial proof rather than slapdash graphic jobs. Gopal. P.S. Hi wasim We are not blaming u for fooling us. But I think you are being cheated by your friend or even your friend might have been cheated by someone else. Because it is very difficult to believe a Music company making such a low quality graphics for their album. even a Pirate music company will not do that cos with todays technology and easy availability of professional graphic designers, it is not a big task to make a decent CD Cover. Well, even if it is an original CD as your friend claims, then he might have made the cd covers by himself.. who knows. hi yasheer i have also placed a "SERIOUS REQUEST" here in this message on behalf of u. before that, i want to kid u. atleast we in india are longing for the day to see the audio cds of Water (OSTs). but u being in srilanka its very bad to ask like this. becoz the whole shooting was done in srilanka. so while filming it, u should be the first among many others to hear the water songs when picturisation was done long ago and u should post us, saying "i heard water samples it is going to create a special place for fans who like more classicals melodies". so why u missed such hottest menu??? But it is really sad to see all songs have become like BGMs in this movie at a point oftime, when we were already complaining that some of arr's songs in a movie are not used properly. but here entire songs are likeBGM scores. but one could also feel that it cannot be better picturiesed more than this and looks even apt to define a pathetic atmosphere. I watched the movie yesterday few interesting things again the songs in the movie are slightly different from what we heard in both internet and the cd. (!!!) especially piya ho.. it is more like an unplugged version towards the ending.. because when sukhwindar sings the songs.. the tabla plays in a very mild and a little different than both versions we heard. well, thats what i feel.. and the songs are picturized so beautifully, except the holi song shyam rang i think the shyam rang's picturisation is something not upto the mark overall film is too good.. it is better than earth.. michael danna's music, the photography and our boss' amazing music.. it was a treat. 'Water' Chosen as Closing Film at Cinequest Festival By LISA TSERINGIndia-West Staff ReporterDeepa Mehta's acclaimed drama Water will close out this year's Cinequest film festival in San Jose, Calif., Mar. 12, it was announced last week. The 16th Cinequest festival will screen 191 feature films, including 21 world, 14 North American and four United States premieres. Once again, the festival features numerous films from South Asian filmmakers and on South Asian themes, including Milk Opium, The Gold Bracelet and It's a Mismatch. Cinequest this year will also debut some of its trailers, shorts and other content on mobile video platforms such as Palm handheld devices, iPods, wireless laptops and video-enabled mobile phones.• Water is the final film in Deepa Mehta's elemental trilogy that included Fire (1996) and Earth/1947 (1998). In 1938 Varanasi, a precocious, feisty eight-year old, Chuyia (Sarala), is married and then widowed. Required by Hindu laws at that time to leave mainstream society, she is consigned to a dilapidated home for widows, where her hair is shorn and she is made to wear white as she adapts to a new life to be spent in deprivation and renunciation. But her fiery character proves a refreshing distraction to the home's widows - one of whom, Kalyani (Lisa Ray), who has been prostituted out by the home's mother, starts to question her own fate. When Kalyani falls in love with an idealistic young lawyer, Narayana (John Abraham), she shares her secret with Chuyia, with unpredicted results. Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Waheeda Rehman, Raghubir Yadav and Seema Biswas play key roles in the film, which took seven years to make and was shot in Sri Lanka after controversy in India over its subject matter made it impossible for Mehta to complete the film there. I bought the soundtrack of Water on Itune. I've been listening to it since this morning It is really wonderfull. Michael Danna has done a good job but all the credits goes to Ar Rahman. All his songs are GREAT. All are melodious songs. The ones that i find Excellent are Piya Ho and Naina Neen Baha. Each time that I listen to these songs, I feel like crying...They really touched me. As an opening film of the 30th annual Toronto International Film, it has been back in news after it was stopped from being shot in India years back. Third in the trilogy after Fire and Earth, 'Water' is director Deepa Mehta's long cherished dream that has finally been realized after a wait for number of years. Produced by David Hamilton, 'Water' was secretly shot in Sri Lanka and stars John Abraham, Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Waheeda Rehman, Raghuvir Yadav and Baby Sarala in principal roles. Just like 'Fire' and 'Earth', A.R. Rehman gives music for 'Water' as well. Sukhwinder Singh begins 'Aayo Re Sakhi' in his trademark semi- classical rendition and just when you start thinking that the track would pump up its tempo, Rehman throws a surprise by keeping the pace consistent. There are very limited musical instruments in the background that makes 'Aayo Re Sakhi' a kind of number that deserves to be heard with more attention. A soothing rhythmic track with a strong classical base to it, it has a female singer joining Sukhwinder after the song is about half way through. Lyrics are poetic that convey the message of love, happiness, celebration and above all freedom. A song with a Radha-Krishan background, 'Bangri Marorii' has a rather strong classical base with again vocals doing all the talking (literally) with little or no music playing in the background. And this is where Rehman wins in creating a much desired effect by composing 'Bangri Marorii' in a manner that would be identifiable by people with strong understanding of music belonging to this genre. This is a kind of track that has a maximum impact when one wants to relax in dark isolation! By the time 'Naina Neer Bahai' begins, you are well aware about the style of music that Deepa Mehta and Rehman have chosen for 'Water'. This number too is totally subtle in nature and has references to Meera-Krishna love. With great lyrics and some excellent singing, this slow moving song about selfless love and admiration is an even better composition when compared to the earlier too and is a must for the lovers of classical/semi-classical music. Ditto for 'Piya Ho' that moves at even leisurely pace and is a duet where Sukhwinder Singh comes in towards the end. 'Bhang', 'nasha' and 'masti' are the key elements of the celebration song 'Sham Rang Mei' that appears to be a 'holi' song. Beautiful is the way to describe this duet that has an innocent feel to it. Lyrics too are different from numerous 'holi' tracks that have been composed over all these years and has a 'pure' feel to it. The album ends with one of the most popular 'bhajans' 'Vaishnava Jana To' that is known to one and all. One can almost sense Rehman's enjoyment over composing for 'Water' where he is not bound by commercial boundaries and has just let himself be free. He is completely uninhibited in his approach and comes up with a musical score that can be described in three words - 'Pure', 'Honest' and 'True'! Will the music of 'Water' turn out to be a commercial success?
