Most of the songs that he has sung seem to reflect his personality to the Tee 
fun, confident and passionate. Twenty three-year-old Benny Dayal has had the 
dream start in the music industry that many dream of. His debut was with A.R. 
Rahman and from then on he has gone on to wield the microphone for the likes of 
Harris Jayaraj, Vidyasagar and G.V. Prakash.
His first song to hit the airwaves was Maduraikku Pogadhedi, from the film 
'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' in which he has also sung Nee Marylin Monroe Cloninga, 
both of which can get you to shake a leg or two. But it wasn't just luck, 
there's a lot of practice and exposure that earned him the call from Rahman's 
studio.
Based in the Gulf, Benny came to Chennai to earn a graduation degree from MCC. 
That's when he participated in SS Music channel's talent hunt contest and 
became a part of the then-famous S5 band. A few years later, he was also 
spotted in Vijay TV's 'Paadum Office', a singing competition between 
professionals working in corporate offices and is a part of a Rock and Roll 
band called "Rainbow Bridge".
He has also sung a few ad jingles. And all this with the Tamil he had picked up 
while in Chennai, and that's really good going by his songs."I don't know how 
but somehow I must have got noticed and that's how I got a call from A.R.

Hi Rahmaniacs
Now we are discussing abt SIVAJI,AKJ etc. When we look
forward to next year we can see some exciting project
especially in hindi. Lajjo,GHAJINI(hindi)and subhash
ghais movie. These projects are slated for 2008
release. Another glorious year in ARRs career coming.
I have one doubt. When composing for these 3 project
which movie will make some pressure to ARR? My answer
is GHAJINI.People will compare the tracks with GHAJINI
tamil. Like all of u iam sure ARR will take it easy.

I saw the very first show of The Rising-Mangal Pandey here in Dubai,
It is simply superb, no doubt the film will cross Lagaan's records
frenz it's party time again...BGM is marvellous, camera work is
stunning, direction-ketan's best to date, aamir great and all others
too...
Mangal will be MegaHit.

well with this era.i am a big fan of our boss as well
as Aamir Khan.Both perfectionists combine to give us a
classic in the form:Mangal Pandey.

this is my first mail to the group.i have read many messages with -ve 
response to the music of rising.after listening once even i  felt that 
its nowhere near bose or swades.however after repeatedly listening to 
it,i felt most of the tracks are simply superb.especially mangal 
mangal.al maddath maula is a
song i feel no one else could compose.although rasiya and takey takey 
are good i felt very slightly let down but that is b'cos i expect 
nothing less than exceptional music from boss.i still feel bose and 
swades were better b'cos each and every one of the songs were 
absolutely superb

LOCARNO, Switzerland (Hollywood Reporter) - Ketan
Mehta's sweeping epic, "The Rising -- Ballad of Mangal
Pandey," is a kind of Bollywood "Braveheart" as one
courageous and doomed man confronts the might of the
British Empire, plus there's singing and dancing.

Sumptuously designed and beautifully shot, the film
will delight Bollywood fans but likely will fail to
capture mainstream audiences with its melodramatic
style and jarring combination of stirring action,
brutality and musical numbers.

For 100 years, the East India Company was the face of
the British Empire, ruling one-fifth of the world and
dominating the Indian subcontinent with the help of
300,000 Hindu and Muslim soldiers called Sepoys.

In Mehta's tale, the introduction of a new rifle in
1853 brought down the most successful private company
in history. The rifle used a cartridge that soldiers
had to bite the end of in order to pour the powder
into the barrel. But the company used the grease of
pigs and cows to seal the cartridges, and so placing
them in their mouths violated the Sepoys' faiths.

Mangal Pandey (Aamir Khan) is one of the bravest
Sepoys, having served with distinction in places like
Afghanistan's Khyber Pass, where he saved the life of
Capt. William Gordon (Toby Stephens).

At first, trusting the Company lie that the cartridges
do not use pig or cow grease, Pandey bites the bullet,
but when the truth is revealed, he leads the Sepoy in
a rebellion that for the first time unites all the
various creeds, tribes and castes of the region. It
sows the seeds for the end of the East India Company's
reign, though India would not gain its independence
from Britain for about another century.

The saga is told in black-and-white terms with a clear
division between good guys and bad guys. The dastardly
villains are the ones in the red uniforms who speak as
if they've just swallowed a plum. The only good
British officer is, inevitably, Scottish.

The Bollywood style is so bouncy and optimistic,
however, that it's difficult to sustain the effect of
an oppressed nation when everyone, even untouchables
and slave girls, all appear so jolly. The hero is
savagely beaten by five Company men, but shortly
afterward he joins the beautiful pleasure house girl
Heera (Rani Mukherji) in a jaunty dance number.

Although the film is expertly rooted in its period,
Heera seems to have been parachuted in from the 21st
century with her cover girl eyes and MTV choreography.

There are many bold statements about freedom and
peoples' rights to their own cultures and faiths and a
suggestion that there are modern versions of the East
India Company at work in the world, which might well
be true, but the message gets a bit lost amid all the
happy singing people.

I am in dubai an I just heard that Rising has been delayed by 2 
weekscan anyone confirm
I spoke to the theatres releasing it on 10th (2 days before the date in 
India) and they said its gonna come only by 24th.
He also said the movie is delayed all over India due to Mumbai rains as 
they donot want to lose the opening.

Is it true?

Aamir Khan returns with "Mangal Pandey — The Rising" after a four-year gap.

My passion for my work shows on screen... I thoroughly enjoy the work I do.
EPIC TALE: Mangal Pandey — The Rising pivots on how one man can change history.

For the past six months, irrespective of the film being screened, the audience 
at Chennai's
Melody theatre gives a standing ovation to the trailer of "Mangal Pandey — The 
Rising." The 90
seconds theatrical trailer showing Aamir Khan walking in shackles with the 
patriotic song
"Mangal ... Mangal ... ," tuned by A. R. Rahman, in the background creates a 
stir.

An Aamir Khan film is releasing after four years and the trade feels that 
"Mangal Pandey — The
Rising" is sure to take a bumper opening worldwide as it releases on August 12 
for the
Independence Day weekend.

Four years without a release! It's something unthinkable for a top Bollywood 
actor but Aamir
Khan's box-office ratings remain the same.

His "Lagaan" (2001) was a path-breaker, which was not only a huge commercial 
hit but also took
Indian cinema into the International arena.

It was followed by "Dil Chahta Hai" the same year, a stylishly-made trendsetter 
that was also a
hit. Now Aamir is back with "Mangal Pandey... " and a lot is riding on the film 
directed by
Ketan Mehta.

It is an epic tale of friendship, betrayal, love and sacrifice set against the 
backdrop of what
the British called the `Sepoy Mutiny' (of 1857), but for the Indians it was the 
First War of
Independence.

Aamir was in Chennai recently for a day to dub Om Puri's voice over at Four 
Frames, the
state-of-the-art studio of director Priyadarshan.

Om Puri is the narrator of "Mangal Pandey ... ," something similar to what 
Amitabh Bachchan did
for "Lagaan."

In an exclusive interview Aamir Khan chats about his long break and ``Mangal 
Pandey." Excerpts:


They say that you are an elusive star and media shy... .

I have not given an interview to any Mumbai film magazines for 15 years and 
have my own
reservations about mainstream media. I subscribe to The Hindu, Chennai edition. 
I like it
because it is one of the few newspapers in the country that reports news unlike 
some others
that are full of trivia (smiles).

You seem to be a perfectionist going by your choice of films

I am honest with my work. I only do films that I believe in and am extremely 
passionate about
it. My passion for my work shows on screen. To be honest I thoroughly enjoy the 
work I do.

What are your criteria for selecting a film?

First I expect a bound script from my director. When I read the script for the 
first time, I
put myself in the audience's seat. I follow my instinct and if it excites me I 
will do it.

Your last release was "Dil Chahta Hai" nearly four years ago. Was this long 
break intentional?

To be precise, "Dil Chahta Hai" opened on August 10, 2001 and the release date 
of "Mangal
Pandey ... " is fixed for August 12. This gap is unplanned. I was going through 
some traumatic
time in my personal life and for two years, I was dealing with that problem. 
Then it took me 18
months to grow my hair and moustache for the Mangal Pandey look.

So how long did it take to finish the film? Where are the locations?

The actual shoot took 180 days. We shot in Super 35, it gives you better 
quality in
cinemascope. Unlike other films where only the special effects are shot on DI 
(Digital
Imaging), Ketan did the entire film on DI. The locations varied from Pataudi 
Palace in Haryana,
j to some exotic places in Maharashtra. In Mumbai film city a set was erected 
that depicted the
Sepoy basti.

What attracted you to this theme?

Obviously the script, based on the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny, excited me. The film is 
set in one of the
most beautiful countries on earth, told across the divides of time... It is the 
tale of
friends, lovers and enemies, exploiters and exploited, and the growth and 
awareness of a man
and a nation. The basis of the story is about how one man can change history... 
This sweeping
epic is based on real historical events, seen as a trigger for Indian 
independence. It is
extremely contemporary in topic.

Does the film have any message?

Basically it is the concept of freedom ... and the right of a man to hold his 
head as high as
the other. As I told you earlier it is extremely contemporary.

What is the difference between Bhuvan in "Lagaan" and Mangal Pandey?

Bhuvan is cool and level-headed, while Mangal is a hot headed reactionary. 
Though Mangal's
character is historic, there is no record of his personal life. So the 
scriptwriters Farooq
Dhondy and director Ketan Mehta took some liberties.

And you have sang a song... ?

(Laughs) It is Rahman's fault as he encouraged me to be part of the song "Holi 
Re... " There
are six songs, in the film though Mangal appears in only this "Holi... " song 
as per story
requirements.

Dhondy has projected Mangal as a symbol of freedom ... a spirit of that time

Its growing slowly but surely. If you have developed any special taste 
after hearing previous ARR albums, you will find them in plenty to 
satisfy it through The rising.  From all the music reviews from fans 
and websites it would be an understatement to say that everybody's 
favorite is differing. Somebody criticizes Rasiya to the core, the 
other one alludes it as the pick of the album. Make no mistake every 
song in the album is rich in orchestarisation and all of them are 
equally good. The best way to scrutinize an ARR album is to find 
rejection on first hearing (No example needed to illustrate this one). 
The later it grows the stronger will be its impact and Mangal Pandey 
is that kind of an album.

[arr] Rising..

after listening the album for the first time, i was about write the 
same "Disappointment" cliche'in the group.  but i said to myself.. 
hey hold on..  the album is certainly upto something..  cos it is 
arr.

we indians became quiet estranged to this kind of music.  over the 
period, indian music became too sweet and pretentious.  and thus it 
became sometimes a bit hard for us to digest the tunes that are very 
folky and rusty.  i think that is why the album disappointed a few 
people.

i have to accept that i am not really up that standard to enjoy all 
the songs of rising.  but..  i loved the "main wari wari" and "Holi"

they are really really awesome. 

I will give full marks to the rest of the songs too.  because i 
realised i am starting to like them.

Main wari wari is my pick of the album.  a very unique tune.

And ya!  it is time for arr to stop doing the period films.  but 
what ever he has done, will be remembered forever.

after listening to the rising album, i dont know why.. i am thinking 
about an arr song with no background music.. a unique melody, little 
rusty.. little raw..  a bit off from the rhythm..  unperfect in 
singing and awesome as a song..

i dont know if i would get to hear a song of that kind or not.

[arr] Rising does justice to late Mangal

Someone asked here why he does more period films instead of
commercial.. I will tell you why.

Rising is ARR at his best! Well, it is difficult to decide what is
ARR's best, the list is long..

Not surprisingly, rising is more classical and folk, but with a twist.
He has used synthesized sounds and tech effects stunningly! Some
reused beats, but that is insignificant in front of the overall genius
of the work.

First of all, I have to acknowledge Javed Akhtar's brilliant work
without which the tracks probably wouldnt be the same.
Vocal control is pretty much airtight on the spot.. especially for the
'sur' demanded by ARR. Kailash Kher takes the cake! 

Technically, Rising is brilliant. Innovation wise it keeps one hooked
to the new sounds and classical tunes - and yet again very very
addictive. (i need to sleep.. almost time to wake up)


Of all tracks, Mangal Atma is the most emotional piece. As the song
progresses ones heart can't help but visualise Mangal's last moments.
Silence is a very powerful technique when used well. ARR bring out his
talent to do justice to what is to be the most heart wrenching scene
in the movie. From the grief of the dawn when he is to be hanged, and
the courage one garners just before he is, to the moments when one
can't get hold of what just happened. It is orchastrated brilliantly
to follow the audience's emotions with the storyline.. as only ARR can.


Someone asked here why he does more period films instead of commercial. 
Answer: He does so because no one else can do justice to the heroes of
our motherland.


I cant wait to see the movie!!

For a long time I havent mailed in the groupChanged my base to Chennai.so was busy getting settled down...!!
Generally I get ARR cds on the first day...but this time I couldntPeople say "There's always a first time for everything..." and that happened to me...
Atlastgot Mangal Pandey - The Rising yesterday (Monday).I was pretty tensed after reading such bashings by our own fans for the past 2 days (which is pretty starnge for ARR). Yeah...the music didnt really strike me the first time I heard it...I knew it was different...but it wasnt catchy expect for RASIYA ...(the hauting humming)
Started hearing it again at 11:00pmwent on and on and on  till 2:00 am over and over again.by then I felt we are all lucky to get such an amazing album having paid just RS.195 ...it must have been costlier...!! The effort deserves more.
BOSS and Javed Sahab have become like Wine and cheese...the chemistry seems to be showing in each and every note...Though some tunes seem to be of heard before stuff...Rahman still has made it very refreshing...
Just close ur eyes and the music expands ur thoughtsTransports to a land never before seenIt takes u through a legends life who started a revolt which turned out to be the turning point in Indian History...Verdict: This album isnt for people who look for timepass stuff...this one is for serious listeners.

While I do admit that the line between fans and
fanatics sometimes is blurred, I still feel that it is
more a matter of opinion than a critique on the music.
I am personally not qualified to dissect the songs of
Mangal Pandey and give you all it's technical details,
but I can definately tell you that the music appeals.
It is amazing and it really is very nice to listen to.
I haven't heard it that many times, but I still feel
that it is one of Rahman's better period films. In
fact, it is one of the top three, right up there with
Iruvar and 1947. 

If some feel that the music is bad, others feel that
it is great. What we have is a clash of opinions. It
has nothing to do with who is right and wrong, but
just like how guys who liked Mangal Pandey cant seem
to stomach the critisism, guys who didn't like it seem
to think that those who like it are just lying to
themselves. 

It all boils down to personal choice. Yes, maybe we
shouldn't rip apart people who didn't like it, but at
the same time, if someone loves the music, he is as
entitled to saying so. It's the passion that keeps
this group going!!

I agree with Aanand. Lets understand taht we have responsibilities as a fan too.taking both constructive criticism and appreciation for our boss in stride. There's more to discuss than only praise our boss...the very fact that we are here proves that we r all rahman fans...so that doesnt need much of discussion to claim repeatedly the same fact. 
Use fair-value judgement, I am sure, our boss would rather appreciate taht.

Ok, Rising music is not titillating for many I guess. Fine, but what
is that u guys were expecting? A fast tappy number?? a duet song?? use
of modern instruments?

If u were expecting all the above, the film wud be a comedy. As said
its a period film with differnt story (its not Lagaan again). They are
the creators and they know what to give.

Its easy for we youngsters to throw our opinions. Ask people like
Naushad, and the contemporaries of RD Burman. They'll know the essence
of it.  Its like asking Sachin to hit century each time he plays. Its
like asking to score 100 marks in each exam. 

I guess we r demanding too much. Try appreciating and have some faith.
Even if the music is bad, let it pass there is still music and
life ahead.

[arr] Rising is ok, but growing on me

Mangal Mangal (all 3 versions) are brilliant.

Main Vari Vari, I didnt know what to make of this song at first, but 
I really appreciated it on the second listening and then it got 
stuck in my head. 

Holi re, to me, is abit of a mess, too much is going on in the song, 
in terms of instruments and vocals, you can understand y rahman did 
that because holi is such an energetic song, there is something 
stopping me from truely enjoying the song. and the reused loop from 
chand aya hai-dil hi dil mein didnt do the song much justice.

rasiya is another okay song, i think it will grow on me, but it is 
decent.

takey takey is a song which i truely dispise, i think its stupid and 
sticks out like a sore thumb on this album, and it didnt like the 
reuse of the intro from saaiyan from nayak.

al maddath maula is a very good song, and i instantly loved it.


the rising is a good album, and as usual its better than the usual 
nonsense that is out on the market (but its the nonsense which ends 
up selling more).  the problem i am having is that all the rahman 
albums since boys have seemed in some way disappointing, though some 
grew on me like aayitha ezhuthu, i felt as if rahman's heart was not 
in making the album, he seems more happy composing background 
scores, but unfortunately we cannot go out and by bgm's.

anyways that was my 2 cents on the album

Anand -

I do agree that judging music is a subjective process. It is also not
always true that the most popular music is the "best." So let everyone
have their own opinion of Rahman's music. 

But that is not my point. I can be a fan of Rahman's music and still
say that some of Rahman's songs were poor. What's wrong with saying
"poor quality music?" I'm not attacking Rahman personally .. I'm only
criticising his music. Nothing wrong with that!! (unless we lived in a
communist state). Even geniuses perform poorly at times, because
they're human. Rahman is a performer ... he gets paid a lot of money
for his movies, we spend a lot of money on CDs and cassettes, so he is
infat *obliged* to make good music. I don't want to spend $14 on a
Rahman CD only to like 1 or 2 songs. (Ofcourse, he rarely disappoints
me ... so its ok)

I also don't agree with the argument that the songs were situational.
None of us has seen the movie yet, so how does anyone know whether
they were situational? Right now, we are simply judging the songs as a
separate entity.

My main point was that some people here are unable to take criticism
of Rahman. Thats not usually a healthy sign.

dont listen to pple who say that rising is a boring album.it is a beautiful albummelody at the forefront
 
i have not in a long time heard melodies like vaari jaaoon  ( not since teri mehfil me kismat azmaa kar_ mughale azam _ music naushad!!!) it is beautifulthe stanza ...wowthe line badi mehengi padi mujhe.( 2:50   to   3: 15)have me reaching fr the rewind button on my cd playerthe tabla is recorded like never before and the bass is awesome...the image it creates is awesome!!!
 
holi re started with the disappointing beats ( notorious by now) but it is the best holi melodytrust me guys.
 
takey is out of this wrldthe stanza is a wonderfully clear ,,,shining melody ...brilliant like th e sunshine.
 
same with rasiya...the goriyaa manat manat man gayi is so sexy...it oozes oomph i guess it will be used in a sensuous way in the movie added with the magic of richa sharma...wow...she outsings herself in this one for sure!!
 
al madaht maula i cry listening to the poignant song so full of pathos that it makes me wonder how a person can think of it as a song for " jehaadis" and one for the "extermination of non muslims"..it scares me to think of the existance of such non secular elements in the society ..leave alone the group.pathos and pain are the correct words to describe what the song invokes !!!
 
and mangal is a good melody although an overkill of sorts in the album...but anythign for such a GEM of an album

[arr] Rising is scintillating

Hi folks,
This is the first post of mine to this group. I only used to read the 
posts in the website but now I couldn't resist myself wrt "Rising" 
that I have joined the group jus to say that "Rising is scintillating".

Even in the first few runs I began to like most of the tracks and now 
I am permanently glued to it. For those who didn't find the album 
great, I can only say that a few more hearing is all that is required.


This album is definitely a very good one.

[arr] Rising is growing

I have been listening to it since yesterday. Have lost count 
of the number of times.

I have started to like, rather love all the songs except maulaa.

mangal mangal is still at the top. Its lyrics are also so 
lovely.

And Rasiya had come to be the second best. The initial 
confusion about the mood of it has got cleared. It can be 
considered like "kahiin aag lage" of Taal.

The beats of main vaarii vaarii are also getting in my head. 
I still find kavitha's voice irritating in it. but overall 
the song is good. The only problem is that it seems out of 
place in the album. And its placement is also wrong that it 
is kept just after mangal mangal. A mujra feels cheap after 
a song like mangal mangal.

I am not making any opinion about Takey Takey. That seems to 
be a situational song and probably we can understand its 
significance only after seeing the movie.

Holi re looses on the count of poor lyrics. All old stale 
metaphors, all those radha kishan things that had been in 
millions of songs.

The worst song is maula maula. I am surprised how could ARR 
come up with such a song after having given dozens of divine 
devotional songs. Just the other day, he gave zikr, and now 
this crap.

The problem I find in this song is that it is less of a 
devotional, and more of a fighting/ attack song. The voices 
have spoiled the song. The devotion and bowing to almightly 
is not becoming apparent in the song. Only ARR's voice has 
some semblance of "calling allaah", rest of the voices are 
just singing or speaking something.

They are not pleading to allaah to help them. They are 
rather ordering allaah to bloody help them, or face the 
conseqences.

It is so fast that it might be a march song of zehadis out 
to exterminate non-muslims. This type of song raises fear in 
the heart of non-muslims.

contrast this song with noor un alaa or haji ali, and you 
will know what I am missing in this song. ARR's chant of 
maulaa is the only saving grace of this song.

[arr] rising - a concern (please read on)

hi ppl,
   i jus' went thru the groups posts, this whole week. 90% posts r abt
rising audio. the pre-release posts stated abt release dates
confusion, audio availability problems, ARR's participation n so on.
the posts after the release r getting outta control like
dissappointing music et all. no1 can blame ARR or his fans abt it. sum
fans in this grp r expecting music like alaipayuthey, taal like music
which is natural. they cudn't accept music of the past...nor wud u
when ur dad listens 2 old songs. itz gen gap. ppl xpecting new-age,
hip-hop, rap, trance n fusion as trend gets changing. ARR have already
explored sum parts of these music i beleive. but the same music type
won't make him different. a difference comes when u differ from others
n not trying the same. tats wat ARR is in2. this time he's back 2 the
past. try setting up ur mind 2 historic music then. our mind keeps
changing off diff music types. when u wanna "enthan vaanil" or "nahin
samne" i bet u won't enjoy "shakalaka baby" or "anjana"
  a concern - discussing abt release dates n audio availability on
pre-release is common among us. so try posting msgs tat wud explain
the film's story 4 which ARR composes music. this wud make ppl get
prepared 2 the type of music launched at tat time making them get in2
the feel. this is a pre-relaese concern 1nly.
   abt the post-release, i'd request u guys 2 use a gentle
vocabulary 4 criticizing, if the music's not appealing. even normal
ppl used 2 say the music's ok if they don't like it, n not horrible,
etc. as i read in sum posts. itz not simply saying tat u r a hardcore
fan of ARR n criticizing him 2 the grass root level. criticize
decently, applaud effectively. have a nice time

This is the album in which ARR has taken care of chronology. I am not any master in identifying styles and instruments prevelant in any era, but Rising gives a clearcut feel that ARR has come up with some old style.I mean to say that the songs do sound 1857-ish, unlike Kisna songs which were no 1947-ish at all.3. on first few
 hearings, main vari vari reminds of chilaman   uthegii nahiin of Kisna. The song sounds odd among the other songs of the album. Maybe someone insisted on keeping a dance no. somewhere to relax people.4. Holi song is also good folk music. But I feel that the freshness of Udit Narayan's voice kills the 1857-ish feel of the song.I feel that ARR should stop using Udit Narayan (irrespective of today's national award) and Kavitha Krishnamurthy. The voice of these two are so typical that they snatch attention of the listeners away from music towards the voice.5. The mood of Rasiya does not become clear in first few hearings. The song sounds of "separation" but the voices is not able to convey the pathos. But if it is taunting, cajoling, chhedh-chhaadh song, then too, the feeling is not becoming apparant.Somewhere the singers do oh-aah-oomph like Ila Irun which sounds a tad out of place, on the verge of
 being cheap.6. Could not get the mood of Takey Takey. They seem to be talking about some market place, unless there is some metaphor in it. The Chorus sounds overly muted in it. Seems to be filler song.7. Al Maddath maula is a confused song. ARR seems to be doing too many devotional songs, thus these sound repetitive. This song is not able to raise any clear cut feeling, of devotion, of submission, of worry, of anxiety, or helplessness. It has all in a khichadi manner. And after the halfway, it grows in loudness to become irritating.Meenakshi's noor-un-allaah was far better, Bose's zikr was far far better. Vandemataram's songs were far better.The directors might be using these songs to pull muslim crowds to theatres and to music. These are like all those dargah's songs of Manmohan Desai's films.But, muslim listeners will sure like this song. Thus the purpose of keeping this song gets
 fulfilled.It is sad that ARR is only in this song.-Javed's lyrics seem to be excellent. His choice of words is very good and powerful.I am getting the feeling that the folk beats of this album are going to extremely popular and it is going to break the records of Taal. Touchwood.For that matter, I am from U.P. (Lucknow) thus the music is tailor made for my liking. is En uyir tozhiye = Kumariif u still think he is wonderful...ur

the songs of mangal pandey be sounded had harris jayaraj done it..he 
is also a wonderful composeri would like to see another

3. and now, in Risings rasiya

The ones criticising Rising are loosers who are letting go 
of the divine enjoyment such songs offer. It is your funeral.

I listened to The Rising on Raaga.com this morning after reading many posts in the group mail.
 
 My very first impression was that it was like Naushad had made the music - in the sense that it sort of reminded me of Baiju Bawara and Mughal-E-Azam!  Instantly I realised that AR Rahman is trying to transport us back to those times in which the film resides. Thus any one who wishes to knock the music down could perhaps consider this that AR Rahman in modern times is perhaps taking us back in time via the 'time-machine' of music for The Rising.
 
By the way I believe that the song 'takey takey' has the makings of a superhit song provided it played repeatedly by young DJ's on radio and in clubs, underground etc and also if the situation in the film is good.  Another great thing would be if Yashraj as a company promote The Rising music like their other films.  It had a very good beat indeed.
 
I was surprised that Sonu Nigam did not sing in this album!
 
One thing is sure, popular or not with the masses, it will be remembered for ever!

[arr] Rising...Disappointing?

I'm very surprised at the disppointment! This is one of the few 
instantly likeable Rahman albums in a long time. 

Mangal Mangal, far from being about the man, is on auspiciousness as 
Rawat mentioned and that itself was a pleasant surprise. Main vari 
vari is the pick of the album, very catchy. You thought Darbar had 
milked the khotewali genre to the hilt in devdas...listen to this! 
But yes, Kavita sounds old.

Every composer worth his name has a holi song to his credit. And now, 
even ARR does. And a very different holi song at that. Beats most 
other cliched holi songs like those in Waqt and Baaghbaan. The 
combination of tunes that flow without any pattern and the continuous 
use of rhythms make it very lively. I feel this would become a sure 
shot addition to holi fests.

Rasiya and Al Maddath Maula didnt register initially. Al Maddath 
still hasnt, but Rasiya is pretty interesting. Though I really cannot 
place it in any particular situation yet. Takey takeythe lyrics 
are superb and very well sung too. Like Rawat mentioned...looks like 
an intro to a bazaar, why would anyone want an intro to a 
Bazaar...well Ketan Mehta better have a decent situation for it and 
not the regular 'the-lonely-khotewali-ventures-out-of-her-confines-
for-the-first-time' or 'the-lonely-widow-ventures-out-of-her-confines-
for-the-first-time'.

I dont think ARR cares much about the period-authenticity and it 
really doesnt matter. In that sense, who'd vouch for Devdas's 
authenticity with regard to its music...just because you use 
hindustani classical it doesnt fit the period. Same thing about 
Kaalapani and IR's music or Parineeta and Moitra's music. The 
bottomline is about the music saleability and appropriateness within 
the script. Though there are no obviously modern sounds in Rising - 
in fact its seeped in folk music - there are very modern 
accompaniments in the orchestra that makes it very enjoyable for me!

Guys,
Just heard the songs. I like Mangala mangala, mai vari vari, takey takey, holi re(disappoined that he used dauad and dhandiya beats for it thoguh)  and rasiya in that order...They def have the 1857 feel to them and so will def take a while to grow on ppl especially if they r nor Rahmaniacs like us.
My fear is if the film were to bomb then the songs wud remain unappreciated just like Bose or Swades...

Hi all,

As always, first hearing was disappointing but the songs have grown on
me since. There is still a tinge of disappointment about the use of
instrumental pieces from his earlier songs (Mudhalvan, Kaadhalar
Dhinam etc), but overall the album is pretty good. Maybe not "hit"
material, but very classy... Anyway, not many authentic period scores
catch the fancy of general junta, so I guess we'll have to live with
it... All of his period albums have been absolutely great and yet only
Lagaan became popular ( I personally rank 1947 Earth and TLOBS above
Lagaan). I hope The Rising breaks the trend but I am afraid it might
not.

Khair... the songs... this is not really a review.. just a few
comments that come to my mind as I'm listening...

1/5/8) Mangal Mangal - 3 versions: Each of the versions is superb,
though the first two don't sound very different from each other. And
the third one (Aatma) starts slower but picks up the pace later on and
sounds much like the earlier versions. I am not complaining though.
Its a superb song! 3 is better than 1! :)

2) Main Vari Vari: Very well sung by Kavita and Reena. Basically a
"mujra" song that grows on you. However, doesn't really break any new
ground as far as mujra songs are concerned except the portions sung by
Reena where the song really attains a little modern touch and sounds
really different and interesting.
7.5/10

3) Holi Re: Starts with Aamir reciting a longish portion which is
followed by a catchy tune sung by Udit and madhushree mainly, joined
by Srinivas and Chinmayee... sounded very ordinary initially but now I
think it can turn out to be "Radha Kaise Na Jale" type popular song if
promoted well and if the movie manages to be a hit. Like I said the
mukhda tune is pretty catchy.. My only problem is that it is a bit too
garba-ish for a Holi song.

4) Rasiya: Not your typical Richa Sharma song. Very different (and
MUCH better) than what I had expected. Introduces another great ARR
discovery - Bonnie  Chakraborty (at least I haven't seen her name
anywhere before). Its very "intoxicating" if you know what I mean...
the rhythm probably reminds one of "Badan Dhuaan Dhuaan" and yet the
song is probably closer to "Rang Hai" in its effect. Amazing
instrumentation - understated throughout and yet its amazing how good
it sounds with  the song. And the Chorus!! WOW!!!...  Great Song!!!
Will not be very popular among masses but I am sure it'll be a
favorite with a LOT of people who'll end up buying the album.

6)Takey Takey: ammm... very weird song on first hearing.. in fact, it
still sounds a bit weird after all these hearing... clearly the most
situational song of the album... but going by the lyrics, it will
probably have a very interesting picturization... Must say that the
song won't have worked on me had it been sung by ANYONE other than
Sukhwinder... As of now, sukhwinder's irrepressible singing makes it
good for me... still waiting for it to grow though...

7) Al Maddath Maula: The Qawwali we've been waiting for. I must say,
Zikr did not go down very well with me. I still don't like it. But
this one is amazing! When ARR sings "maul maulaa maulaa ho" it is
pure paradise!! I'd probably have liked less of "Al Maddath Maula"
chanting that goes on in between the lines. The mukhda tune once again
is very catchy.. something that draws you in from the first hearing
itself... "ae mere daataa.. ae mere maulaa"...
8.75/10 (would've been 9 if I could somehow take the "Al Maddath Maula" out... )

So... there you go... a very good album overall.. Must mention Javed
Akhtar's lyrics which are great throughout...

instruments can b used any number of times...they shud b used differrently...
like ARR does...nARR songs creeps on to u slowly...n u cant get em outta ur mind...
so listenin once cant really judged ARR's music...i guess u shud b knowin this as a

  First get a original copy of CD or atleast cassette and listen to it in a good system.U have heard the songs online and the quality of songs is not that good.Remember u r listening to Rahmans music and u will not even understand wat instruments he has used if u dont listen in a good system.And finally dont jump into conclusions that too aftter jus hearing it online...Remember some 7000 of us are listening to ur comments...To be frank i too felt the same way when i first heard the songs..But the fact was that i din get any idea about the songs on first listening..After listening to it for some 5 times already i feel the songs are definitely going to make it big... I had the same feeling when i heard Rhythm,Alaipayuthey,and for that matter most of his albumsListen to it for Some 5 to 10 times without any preconcieved notions and then get back if u still didnt like the
 songs...Which i m sure u wont even if u r Rahman basher...

I think it was our mistake to expect too much. Ketan Mehta is a director whose movies never had good music. His movies too are at times very lousy(May be thats why MP is getting so delayed ..Aamir jus doesnt want it to be released.)

Remember Oh darling yeh hai India.. Lousy movie ..lousier songs... Sadly MP joins them ..

Well,wellan album from ARR which beein expected by ALL the ARR 
fans...but as for me...i didnt give much attention on it as im more 
excited on Ah Aah & Godfatherso my expectation on RISING wasnt 
high...so i manage to listen to it online.well well,many saying its 
horrible...i duno y u guys come up with lines like that...i think the 
album is good..knowing its a historical subject,u cant expect people to 
run around dancing for Rang De or singging duet song like Hum hai iss 
phal yaahaan..come on...just watch..the songs will suit the movie 
allot!!...but def the songs aint as powerful as Lagaan,which it manage 
to pull my atraction on the 1st hearing...lets see how it turns 
up...see u guysRISING = will rise on u slowly...GIVE IT TIME!!

And that is what the song is for the album.

Mangal Mangal is the find of the album.

Nice to see Kailash Kher getting so much share of album. 
Seems that ARR has rightly decided to make him his regular 
like Sukhwinder singh.

I also feel that Kailash's earlier songs (non-ARR) were a 
tad louder thus their longevity got restrained. In this 
album, his voice has come to very tolerable range that will 
make one hear it again and again.

In mangal mangal, at some places it seems as if ARR's has 
used the style of aalhaa-uudal folktales of Bundelkhand 
region (jhansi area). It was used bappi lahiri in "aisaa 
tiir chalaa mere dil par jisakii piir sahii na jaaye" song 
of Dalaal.

I feel that this album surpasses Bose in the sense that the 
songs of Bose, however good, could not bring the spirit of 
rebellion, fight, on-the-move. But mangal-mangal is all in 
one song.

The great part is that mangal mangal can't be said openly 
patriotic like TLOBS songs or Bose songs. It is like 
vandemataram songs which had the spirit of freedom and 
patriotism. I am sure that it is going to become very very 
popular. Open patriotism switches off some people.

I have yet to identify the differences in the three versions 
of mangal mangal. But I am sure that that will enhance the 
beauty of this album.

2. This is the album in which ARR has taken care of 
chronology. I am not any master in identifying styles and 
instruments prevelant in any era, but Rising gives a 
clearcut feel that ARR has come up with some old style.
I mean to say that the songs do sound 1857-ish, unlike Kisna 
songs which were no 1947-ish at all.

3. on first few hearings, main vari vari reminds of chilaman 
  uthegii nahiin of Kisna. The song sounds odd among the 
other songs of the album. Maybe someone insisted on keeping 
a dance no. somewhere to relax people.

4. Holi song is also good folk music. But I feel that the 
freshness of Udit Narayan's voice kills the 1857-ish feel of 
the song.

I feel that ARR should stop using Udit Narayan (irrespective 
of today's national award) and Kavitha Krishnamurthy. The 
voice of these two are so typical that they snatch attention 
of the listeners away from music towards the voice.

5. The mood of Rasiya does not become clear in first few 
hearings. The song sounds of "separation" but the voices is 
not able to convey the pathos. But if it is taunting, 
cajoling, chhedh-chhaadh song, then too, the feeling is not 
becoming apparant.

Somewhere the singers do oh-aah-oomph like Ila Irun which 
sounds a tad out of place, on the verge of being cheap.

6. Could not get the mood of Takey Takey. They seem to be 
talking about some market place, unless there is some 
metaphor in it. The Chorus sounds overly muted in it. Seems 
to be filler song.

7. Al Maddath maula is a confused song. ARR seems to be 
doing too many devotional songs, thus these sound 
repetitive. This song is not able to raise any clear cut 
feeling, of devotion, of submission, of worry, of anxiety, 
or helplessness. It has all in a khichadi manner. And after 
the halfway, it grows in loudness to become irritating.

Meenakshi's noor-un-allaah was far better, Bose's zikr was 
far far better. Vandemataram's songs were far better.

The directors might be using these songs to pull muslim 
crowds to theatres and to music. These are like all those 
dargah's songs of Manmohan Desai's films.

But, muslim listeners will sure like this song. Thus the 
purpose of keeping this song gets fulfilled.

It is sad that ARR is only in this song.

Javed's lyrics seem to be excellent. His choice of words is 
very good and powerful.

I am getting the feeling that the folk beats of this album 
are going to extremely popular and it is going to break the 
records of Taal. Touchwood.

For that matter, I am from U.P. (Lucknow) thus the music is 
tailor made for my liking. I don't know how non-hindi 
speaking people are going to find it.

An excellent album.

first impression is that the album is extraordinary. it's very 
westernized for the nature of the movie but the ambience exactly fits 
anyhow! takey takey has overtones of oh darling yeh hai india I 
guess.. Main vari vari.. the main tune is based on very western chord 
progressions and a r changes melodies in ways not done in classical 
indian styles. chords are too good.. rasiya.. the main chorus is 
astounding.. again the backing chords and sound texture is amazing.. 
santoors in the background I guess.. saarangis, all sound great.. 
al maddath maula.. got to hear this first ;) excellent again.. murtaza 
and qadir perform as usual.. the lines i mentioned before and the few 
following lines are great. lots of strings..
overall the album is a lot more HAPPY than I would have expected. 
upbeat, uptempo.. but the songs are catchy.. mangal mangal is an 
excellent song as well..
i personally like the sound and the ambience of the album.. i would 
put the sound as lucknowi or north indian traditional.. rasiya 
chorus.. only a r r can do this I guess.

[arr] Rising on Raaga

Hi all -

I listened to Rising songs on Raaga.com today. After brilliant songs
in Bose, "Rising" is certainly a disappointment. Overall, the songs
sound like "Meenaxi" and it seems to me that Rahman probably composed
Rising soon after Meenaxi, since you can see the similarities in the
orchestral arrangements.

Then again, I've only listened to the songs twice .. so there's a
chance that the songs will grow on me. So far, Al Madduth Maula is the
one song that has stuck ... the others are below-par.

Here's my review :

1. Mangal Mangal 

Good song. Kailash Kher's rustic voice lends a lot of authenticity to
the song. Some of the formations later in the song remind me a bit of
"Des Mere" from Bhagat Singh.

2. Mai Vari

Very ordinary song. This is a classical song sung by Kavitha
Krishnamurthy, and her voice sounds old. Someone else could have been
used. It is probably a courtesan song however the ("thumhari adao pein
mai vari" chorus in the background sounds out of place and modern).
Reminds me of many other Rahman songs from old including Kangalal
Kaithu Sei (Anarkali) and Bombay (Kehna hi kya). The song doesn't have
the right feel to it ...

3. Holi Re

Very ordinary. Doesnt sound Rahman quality.

4. Rasiya

Good song. Sounds like a drunken song ... Richa Sharma's voice suits
the song well. The lilting music in the background is beautiful, as is
the strings.

5. Takey Takey

Ordinary song. This song has a confusing start and the melody doesn't
hold ... Kailash Kher's voice which sounds good in Mangal Mangal
sounds annoying. Reminds me of certain lines in Dil Se (Satrangi Re) ...

6. Al Maddath Maula

Great song. Rahman has gotten into a habit of adding an Islamic song
to many of the movies he makes. And he does it brilliantly (although
not as brilliant as "Zikr" from Bose or "Noor Ul" from Meenaxi). This
has got to be the best song in the album. The tune is VERY refreshing
and new, especially the line "Hai mera maula ... " brilliant. Reminds
me a little bit of "Haji Ali" but that is to be expected.

I feel that your mail is in poor taste and is aimed at 
hurting the feeling of ARR's fans on the great day of 
release of the album they have been waiting for for three years.

As for as the rating is concerned that you have so 
generously given, I can say that the title song itself will 
fetch a rating of 8+ for the album. I have yet to 
internalize other songs. And there are three versions of it 
in the album, making it the longest song of ARR.

Any way, now that you have realized that ARR's music is not 
your cup of tea, maybe you can resume hearing Anu Maliks and 
Nadeem Shrawans. Just leave us fans in peace.

[arr] rising/mangal pandey music is horribly dissapointing

Well, take my word. I heard mangal pandey's music, and it is 100% 
percent boring and disappointing from our music god arrahman, I mean 
what is he doing repeating some of his old music instruments like in 
1.holire- he has used the drum beats of dhandiya from kaadalar dinam 
and daud. And in 2. takke takke (the most expected song) the song 
starts with saiyyan song instrument from the movie nayak. At least 
try to give some fresh music to at least quality actors and foremost 
actors like aamir khan. At one stage when I was listening the 5th or 
6th song I felt if I`m really listening to mangal pandey, or am I 
dreamin. So diasapointing, I have always praised arrahman and never 
criticized arr's music at any stage in my life mind you, but this is 
the first time I'm Really criticizing arr and his music. For a while 
I thought this was my luckiest day when I saw that mangal pandey was 
available for online listening, then 45 minutes later I felt as it 
was my worst day listening to one of arr's worst albums which I 
expected to be the best. Bye (I'm Really sorry if I have disappointed 
any one who has not heard the songs yet.)-well for your inf I heard 
the songs from indiahits.com.

[arr] Rising - First Impressions

all i can say is that this is one of those "it grows
on you" kinda albums, first time i heard it, i hated
it! then it started sounding ok, now after getting
used to the feel of the sound, am unable to stop
listening to it over and over again! yet another
masterpiece... 

sad that no theme music was included though:(

P.S: Rahman's daughter Kathija is singing in the
chorus

album might be a big let down ... Am expecting it to be on the lines 
of BOSE ... where we had couple of good songs and thats it ...

Its quite apparent that you have no taste for music. And for those people reading this response..let this be the final word on it.a man puts in months of his time to make something and people dismiss it in moments..quite a shame, especially coming from a fan (I doubt it, whether you are one), constructive criticism is welcomed, that which is detailed.and guarantees dont work in this industry. As I told Rahman bhaiya once...I hate critics, who dont know tha abc of music, criticising someone else's work, that to, through one liners...absolutely unfair..it gets on my nerves these days. Cant we just enjoy whats their and try and appreciate what and how can one man make such brilliant 'original' compositions, that also from scratch.sorry Gops, Vij and Rano for my outburst, but its like people like Adnan are hell bent on ARR making bland, nonesensical music, what they fail to see is, these soundtracks will live through the test
 of time.and not the crap that mainstream music in India dishes out everyday..
 
Sorry but I disagree with Adnan and I think, in 10 years time, this will be, like Bose, considered a landmark soundtrack... in his career..

Few things that disappointed me were that he used the same beats as "Daud" and 
"Dil hi 
dil mein" in the song "Mai Vari Vari" and also used the same music from 
"mudhalvan" in 
the begining of "Takey Takey".otherwise it is OK on the first listening...i 
believe it will 
sound better on CD

music wud mostly be a slow hit.
there r many evidences for this.
i liked those songs.& i hope it wud be a
hitif boddy bedi gave a chance to other
music director only becoz he wasnt satisfied wid
rising
music then he need to recognize tht music by any other
music director wud no way be better than this.

Just had a word with Planet M, Brigade Rd., Bangalore. They say that MP 
will be out tomorrow evening, latest Saturday morning and the audio for 
Aa Aah will be out in 4 days. So, by 20th/ 21st, expect a double 
bonanzaThis hasn't happened in a long time. The last time 3 ARR 
albums came out back-to-back with negligible gaps in between, was when 
Rhythm, Taj Mahal and Jan Gan Man came out in 2000 I think??

[arr] Rising on 15th?

I went to my cassette waala today evening (13th) to enquire 
about Rising release.

He was not aware of it, though the poster of rising was put 
in his shop telling "cd and cassette available at your 
nearest music shop" or something.

He immediately rang the local person of Yash Raj film 
(music?). The person gave the info

"it is being said that it will be released on 16th but no 
date has been given by the company."

So there. Consider that it can release "anytime in next 3 to 
4 days".

As always, my cassette wala will ring me as soon as he comes 
to know of the release, and, most likely, I will get the 
first cassette of Indore. In past, ARR's music got sold at 
Indore days before the actual release date at Bombay.

Oh yeah, definitely. Will update you guys. No shipping confirmation
yet. Indiaplaza is not very reliable. I've had plenty of bad
experiences. The recent one with pre-order of Swades DVD. I ordered it
on 29th December, 2004 and got hold of it sometime in March !!! 

Nevertheless, I could'nt resist myself and bought the Rising CD. Also,
not sure whether the CD is in Hindi or English, since there are two
versions of the movie (Hindi/English). The name says : Rising - The
Ballad of Mangal Pandey , which is the title for English version. 

I will update ya'll All I can do is wait and watch...

[arr] Rising soundtrack listing

Hello all.

The soundtrack list for the rising is available at yashrajfilms.com 
and option for US people to preorder the CD though it will be 
available only in the last week of july. But look at the credits seems 
to be very earthy album like lagaan and bonus a song by ARR and this 
must be the one where kailash said he felt like he was in the mosque 
or something. Sounds classically promising no mention of 2 cds hoping 
for the best.

[arr] RISING time getting delayed....???

According to the latest information, Rising music will
be delayed by some days more. I talked to the distributor, who said -
in very clear words - that it is NOT POSTPONED, but ONLY DELAYED.

Ketan Mehta and Bobby Bedi are planning to release the movie on 15th
August this year, so as one friend said here, we can expect the audio
exactly one month before, that is 15th July..

Another reason for delaying the audio could be the addition of the
soundtrack (probably). I heard that this idea came at very 11th hour.
Yash Raj people are now wasting time in making decision on whether to
compile songs and soundtrack on one CD (like Bose) or to have 2 copies..

If there are more updates, please share here only. Thanks..

is still not available in Pakistan..i don't know whyI'm dying 
for it..Maybe, because the Pak Government has now put restrictions on 
Piracy and related stuff..Its not a good environment for creative arts
