[arr] Re: ARR songs for meditation/stress relief

2010-09-09 Thread DineshVaidya
Have been using Rahman therapy for stress relief on myself and others for last
15 years and find that ANY Rahman song can be used to de-stress anybody.

And if you are part of a group / band where you can participate in exploring
the Rahman sound, then you are blessed !

I would nevertheless recommend entire albums such as CONNECTIONS, Water,
Swades, Lagaan, Kannathil Mudhalmittal, Parthale Parvasam, SDM, Bombay, VTV,
D6. I can go on and on.

Once you are connected with ARR's music, you are in a blissful world
altogether...

2010-08-30 Thread V S Rawat
Yupp.

That is quite an earful. Why were you not telling till now that you
liked so many songs. They are great. I don't know about tamil ones.

A R RAHMAN music my love , no matter how much critical i be , i
love him to the core.

Yes. That's that point of convergence for us all here.

Only that, we can be as much critical of a song and an album as we
wish, but generalising our dislike an album to ARR has lost is does
hurt a lot of people here, so we should use a bit restraint while
criticizing.

Enjoy.

 Rawat,

You made a lot of sense here. I agree with what you said.

Taimur, you are free to choose what you like and not like, but I
honestly feel that if you cannot like an album like D6 or Raavan,
your chances of being happy with future ARR albums will be quite
low. I am glad I am not in your position.

Also, I never mentioned as a rule that you only have to choose songs
from my list. I only listed the songs that touched me. Why didn't
you choose songs that touched you independent of my list? Why did
you want to make it a point to show that you are so critical of
ARR's Hindi works that you only listed one song in the last 5 years
that you enjoyed? But, later, you mentioned Chan Chan and Shyam that
you liked from Water. Any more that you forgot to mention? So,
 what is it man?

Taimur,

If I'm guessing correctly, you like more of the rustic/folk numbers from Rahman.

Please tell us which songs from Tamil you liked the most in the last 5 years.

   but very little in hindi.

His list has many tamil songs also, but it seems you didn't like those
particular ones and might have liked others.

I wudn't be much help in discussion on tamil songs, but I think it
will help u regain confidence in ARR if you put efforts to make his
list of tamil songs that you liked. You mentioned total three, you
could have off hand recalled 5-10 more at least that you liked.

I personally felt offended for a moment that you just mentioned 3
songs that you liked. I can mention many more than three songs of
Anu Malik, Nadeem Sharavan, Anand Milind, SEL, Vishal1, Vishal2, and
most of the MDs that I like.

I feel like saying that if you can't even like 1 song a year from ARR,
you should rethink why you remain a fan of him? You should move on to
other MDs that you like. It is OK. It happens that we stop clicking
with someone and start clicking with other ones. We should not let our
old habit stagnate us without pleasure. After all that is how, I mean
by moving on from other previous MDs to ARR, we had come to become fan
of ARR in the first place.

Another aspect is that ARR's fan based likes, loves, adores D6, Ravan
type of music. This was vintage ARR with innovations. So, if you don't
like even a single song in these, it will be very unprobable that ARR
will ever give an album for your genres of liking.

I am also dumbfounded that these time when ARR is at the peak of his
worldwide fame only due to his sustained efforts, you are dissatisfied
  so much with him.

   regards,
   taimur

  Enjoy.

Re: [arr] songs database

2010-08-25 Thread raj
Hi Gops,

If we do have most of the information, then please share the same in any
format. A scalable design is possible, but i am afraid it can be bit
complicated for us to start enetering the data with it. We can come up with a
ER diagram for the same, but it can be diffcult for us enter the data to it.
IMO, as a first step if we have the details of songs as a excel sheet prepared
by murugan, then we can easily import the same into a scalable DB design ( I
can help on that ). Importing the data from the basic excel to a complicated
database design cn be performed easily thro ETL tools and bit of querying and
data massaging.

Between ourselves, we have 90%-95% of the data we need. So, that need not be
the focus. In my view, the focus needs to be on designing a database that is
robust and extensible in design. It should allow for backend storage and
front end ingestion and retrieval of data. Extensibility is particularly
important because there may be views of data that we don't conceive now but
will be come apparent in future. A relational database schema seems like the
best approach to take. Let me illustrate that with an example - in some
cases you have credits for musicians for a song and in many cases only for
an entire album. This is true for awards too. The only way this can be
handled is through relational databases with well thought-through
entity-relationships. I would therefore request that let our initial focus
be on defining what kind of information are we seeking to archive and then
design the database before getting down to implementation. Populating it
with data is a relatively trivial task. Suggestions welcome.

Yes can. Perhaps have it comma separated or have a additional column.

Ragas can be comma separated as of now.

The idea is to develope a page/application like Roshan did which
would help us search all the details we need. The page or application would
demand bit of thinking to do. But, as a first step we would need
the data to be represented in some format which the guys the working on. Once
the song details are complete, we ca start working on the application. Changing
or adding data to the database is not a difficult task anyways.

say what the song is predominantly about? patriotic, mother, wedding song etc?

*/

Yes definitely. We can add a column as sound engineer. Please feel
free to add columns with related info. Target is to have all the details on CD.
But its a tough target to think of right now. To get started we can first start
with song list with a few basic details.
As said earlier, rest of the details can be added later on as they come.

Thank you for your suggestions

Thanks for this Roshan. Great start. I think before people start entering data
into this, we should decide on whether more columns/data are required and
 agree
on it collectively? Just a suggestion.

ok..

sorry guys. i think there is something wrong with the forms. i honestly
didn't test it. i was in a rush and generated theform with phpformgen.. and
assumed that it would work.

Vinayak, I agree. i think the best way still is to import using csv, that
way everything is refined and perfect before we actually put it in a db.

I wlll redo the form though.. just in case if any of you think that it will
be good and easy to do taht way..

i will add the song duration and tags as well..

lets do it. :)

Thanks to everyone that agreed to participate. The enthusiasm to get things
rolling is encouraging. However, I would caution against adhoc development.

I agree fully! I think, we need to think about what we want out of this with
the

database we want/need. I also think that we should try and keep these e-mails
separate to the group mail until a framework is finalised in order to help
focus
on the issues.

My suggestion.
Decide on the best Hosting Platform before starting to design the whole
applicationFor example, if the application is going to be deployed
on a cloud hosting platform like the Google App Engine, the typical DB
ER design becomes irrelevant. Also bear in mind the hosting providers
restrictions, like DB restritions based on the package/solutions
offered.

Re: [arr] songs database

I agree, Gopal.

The idea of having an excel sheet was to get all the columns (fields) in
place. Then we can have it normalize it further if required and convert it
into a db.

[arr] Director Siddharth about the slow poison effect of ARR songs

2010-08-23 Thread Bivin Chandra

Agrees Siddharth, who had A.R. Rahman compositions at the back of his mind when
he took this decision. This is what happens to me in case of Rahman's music as
well. When you hear it for the first time, all you feel is that it is something
different, case in point being Taal, Dil Se or Delhi 6. It's only later when
you hear it repeatedly that you start considering it as fantastic. This is why
Rahman's music is cut above everything else as it has it's own style and unique
identity

[arr] Songs in movies - time for a change

2010-05-04 Thread Roshan
I think most of the time songs in movies make it unnecessarily lengthy and
sometimes even hurts the narratives. it is a good move by Mani ratnam to
reduce the number of songs in a movie. But I would like to see the
lip-syncing gone from the movies as well.

Recently watched The *Three Burials of* Melquiades Estrada. and even bought
the OST after watching the movie. it had 6 songs! all used in the
backgrounds. and the ost came with beautiful background score.

I agree that Raavan is short. but I also think that is what it makes even
more beautiful. Less is more.

My only complaint - and i have been complaining about it for years - is that
none of the background scores are getting released.

Why not use official website to release the BGMs if the music labels don't
want to release it ?

The album is so short to begin with.I just can't help but feel
disappointed and upset, even if I love the music of Raavan that's there.
But, the shortness leaves a feeling of dissatisfactiona lingering
longing, and now confirmation about what could have beenif those 3 songs
 were addedperhaps a blockbuster CD

 Why, Mani, why?

  That’s
Allah Rakha Rahman for you †man of few flamboyant words, but of
  immensely
popular, globally hummed music. While his global appeal grows by the day,
 Rahman
continues to add to his Bollywood repertoire, the latest being Mani
  Ratnam’s Raavan.

  Asha Bhonsle’s song
  wasn’t used
While everyone gushed about Raavan’s music
launch with Rahman and Gulzar, Sonu Niigaam tweeted about his song
 missing from
the album. Rahman said, “Unfortunately, because of the narration, we
couldn’t fit many songs. We have three more songs that we recorded, but
couldn’t use. We had a song with Asha Bhonsle too, which wasn’t
used. The movie’s narration would’ve halted with so many songs. So,
  we took a creative
  decision.â€

  I want to work with
  Mani Ratnam... always
  Since Roja, Rahman’s been associated
with every Ratnam project. And, the camaraderie is “precious†to
him. He says, “He doesn’t do three movies in two years, but one in
two years. Which means, in about 20 years, he’s done about 10 movies.
  That
translates into a great working opportunity with him. I want to do stuff

  Mani wants me to

Rahman also sang a number for the flick. But, doesn’t he
usually sing a song in all the movies that he does? “Not necessarily.
Sometimes, Mani wants me to sing. In fact, he was one of the first
  people who
  asked me to sing.â€

  You learn
  to compartmentalise
Since he works with international artistes like
Usher and then comes back to Bollywood, does
  he ever feel disconnected?
“No. When I work there, I feel excited. When I work here, I feel
  excited.
After a while, you learn to compartmentalise and use all the inputs to
  create a
new kind of product. As long as I create music anywhere, I am in great
  spirit.â€

  I took a break for a
year, while taking awards for Slumdog
  What happens when you
don’t feel like creating music? “I take a break,†he says. So,
when did he last take a break? “I took a break for almost a year in
2009... when I was collecting awards for Slumdog
  Millionaire!â€

  Slumdog a
  turning point
  Since the movie got him
  international recognition,
was Slumdog the turning point of his life? He says that it was one of
  the
turning points. So, which one was the most important? “The most
  important
turning point was in the ’90s, when Roja released. My life took a 180
degree turn. My direction turned towards spirituality, it became more
  Sufi.
Everything sort of aligned itself in the same
  direction.â€

  If possible,
  I’d visit a dargah everyday
Does Rahman always visit a dargah
before embarking on a big project? Says he, “Yeah, I try to. If
  possible,
I would visit a dargah everyday. There’s so much spiritual energy. It
  helps me.â€

  Choose
  love
Besides his spirituality, what else makes him tick?
“Choosing love. It’s what I’d said in my Oscar speech. Choose
love †all my life I had a choice between hate and love, and I chose
  love.â€

[arr] Are they official REMIXes of ARR songs ?

2010-04-20 Thread arrbals

Guys,
I see a lot of remixed versions of ARR's great songs like Masakali,
Genda pool, Kabi kabi aditi etc and a lot more in some of the music channels.
But they sound really bad. A complete massacre of the classics. It really pains
to see these so called remixed versions. Im sure its not composed by our Boss.
Are they official versions ? If not who does all these kinda stuff ? Do they
have the rights ?

Luv u Rahman !

2010-01-31 Thread Dinesh Scaran
Uyire Uyire from Bombay no doubt is 1 of my most fav love number from ARR. I
feel it has the deep love yet painful feeling in it. Esp the second interlude
and Chitra's magnificent vocal. Love how she goes AdadaAdada... indre
kanneerum thithikindrethey... U just have no heart to stop the song anywhere.
Vairamuthu lyrics is another plus point. Kadhal Irunthal, yenthal Kannodhe
kalanthe vidhe.. Kaalam thadethal, ennai maanoodhe kalanthe vide.

Just a perfect example of the extraordinaire combo of Mani Ratnam - ARR -
Vairamuthu.

Hi AJ aka Chord,

That was a nice track list. You've listed down practically all the songs from
D6, Blue, CR and VTV ;) ...and rightly so, as all of them deserved to be in
everyone's list of favourite songs.

On a second thought, any reasons for leaving out Passage? I personally thought
Passage has some of the most captivating and poignant tracks. Not that I'm
expecting you to share the same feelings about them...nevertheless, I do wish
to know your opinion on the tracks.

Hi Gayathri,

I did include a lot of songs from each album, but not all..I did leave out
quite a few, leaving only my favorites, which you're right, are a lot! From D6
- 4 tracks, Blue - 3 tracks, CR - 9 tracks, VTV - 5 tracks. If you listen to
this playlist, it's really a mindblowing experience.

About Passage, I do listen to it and enjoy it, but because of the HUGE volume
difference between these tracks and the others, I didn't include it in my
compilation. I do like the Passage tracks very much.

[arr] Songs As Per Mood Swings...!!

2009-12-22 Thread Vinayak Mohanlal
Hey Rahmaniacs,

Before getting into the purpose of this mail, let me get to the background
of such a thought...
Right now, i am just waiting for a meeting to happen with a prospective
client...
I got time and thought to relax with Rahman Sirs music...

To calm my mind the songs immediately came to me were, Pachai Nirame...from
Alaippayuthe... then..Vellai pookkal...From kannathil muthamittal...Mustaffa
from Kadal Desham and all...

These came just random...I was wondering we go through so many situations
like this..maybe some client meeting...some interview...some date...some
tragedy..some celebration like wedding or birthday or anniversary or just a
get together...?

I am sure there will be some or the other songs for each situation by AR
Rahman Sir

Now, coming to the topic, lets start a discussion on various moods and their
most appropriate song (3 atleast).. What say, friends...?

I dont know whether i had seen any thread like this

Hi All Rahmaniacs

Hope all r doin gud. Its been a while since I had posted something in our

to know abt the songs composed by 3 guys Shyam, Prasan Praveen. I donno if
u've hrd d sngs already but I tell u they r extremly talented. I dloaded hrd
some 5 sngs frm their website (they r providing free dload as dey did not
release d sngs officially!) http://blog.tsjstudio.com. All d sngs r nice to
hear. Even at d time of release of Vaaranam Aayiram der was a rumour dat one
sng composed by dem 'Ragasiyam' was mistaken to b a sng frm VA. Its such a
wonderful song. So guys I recommend u all pls giv it a try as I believe dat
eventhou dey r now doin their engg course (I rememeber dat twas posted so in
their website) they wanted to become well-known musicians in d future. Thank
You. HAIL ARR

Heard Blue some 5-6 times..

IMO Blue is a pretty `heavy` Album. I don`t know how to explain it well.. but
this is a different and my first ever experience. For me, the liking of AR's
tracks always start from the ground level in the graph and it hit a pretty good
level.. It takes a moment or sometimes years and we all know the pace. But I
got a feeling that Blue is not at Ground Zero, but it's somewhere up and I need
to bring it (not down) to a `pretty good level` for my mind to like it as an
usual AR composition. So this means AR's standard is increasing per Album !

He also surprised me with Delhi 6.. but for that too, I took my own time to
like it starting from the point zero. I suspected about the standard then
also.. (LOL!) and such thoughts are so sweet. Our own feelings for AR inside
our minds ! :)

Love you, AR ! Thanks for this..
Blue is not an Album to grow on me.. but I need to grow upto its standard !

[arr] Pune does it again...... ROOBAROO (Acoustic Show of ARR songs ) !

2009-08-17 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
The home to the The Wandering Soul's show Rahmania, Pune witnessed yet
another show but of a different kind and by a different group. only common
thing ? love for ARRahman's melody !

A group called ROOBAROO in Pune took their first step in the world of Rahman
music on 22'nd July by performing ARRahman's choicest songs in front of select
audience. In what way they were different than the TWS Rahmania show ? well
they had exactly 3 guitars and a rhythm-man to accompany 2 lead vocalist ! Call
that UNPLUGGED show or Acoustic show, but to me this was a novel concept
showcased by Saurabh Bhalerao who felt the need to get close to the Rahman
melody sans the orchestration and the show simply rocked !

Since there was no pressure on the showcasing minutest details about ARRahman
sound which RAHMANIA team of TWS tries to get closer to, the ROOBAROO team
could experiment a lot with the song selection and presentation and thus could
play some (probably ) un-usual songs like Shauk Hai - Guru, O re chhori -
Lagaan, Luka Chuuppi - RDB, Tu Bin Bataye - RDB and many more in a
non-stop 2 hour show.

This show is certainly for diehard ARR fans, for you HAVE to know all the songs
they play so that your mind is playing it's own track alongwith the unplugged
version on stage.

The group comprises of professional singers and instrumentalists and led by
Saurabh and assisted by Rasika and Nishad on Vocals.

It is a welcome effort by Roobaroo and certainly many more such programmes will
be happening in near future and on behalf of all RAHMANIACS of the World, I
wish them best of luck ! May the Rahman Sound be always with them

There is something special in the air of Pune (and Mumbai..counting Swapnil
Mistry and his gang ) for sure

Jai HO !

There are so many ARR songs that appeal to me in such significant ways, but
the following songs recently have truly touched me in a deep way and get my
  emotions going.

  1) Zindagi (Yuvraaj): There is something so magical about this song that
keeps me addicted and wanting to listen again and again, even 8 months
later. From the touching, melancholic lyrics about life to the mellifluous,
evergreen melody to the soulful and heartfelt, sincere singing by Srinivas,
this song is a modern day classic IMO, sadly, largely gone un-noticed by the
  masses.

  2) Man Mohanna (Jodha Akbar): The raw emotions in this sung expressed so
beautifully by Shende in raaga Mishra Bhairavi is truly moving. Whether you
are a Krishna devotee or not, beyond the surface lyrics, I feel such a
powerful expression of pure devotion in this song, not to mention that awe
  inspiring sounds and arrangements.

  3) Arziyan (Delhi 6): The energy in this song is so straight from the
heavens with the incredibly soulful and passionate singing by Kher and Ali.
The melody in this song just flows so naturally and like Man Mohanna, you
can feel the intense devotion expressed that really pulls on my
  heartstrings.

  4) Khwaja Mere Khwaja (JA): Like the above 2 devotional numbers, the pure
feelings in this one are so innocent and sincere. You can tell that ARR
composed and sang this song straight from his soul.

  5) Rehna Tu (Dehli 6): ARR combines style and feel in this song like he's
never done before. The ending continuum piece is the one that touches me to
the core with such honest, pure, feelings expressed through ARR's playing.
Another one straight from his soul.

  6) Tere Bina (Guru): I love this song for so many reasons, but the pure
emotions of true love and affection between a couple stand out that are very
touching. This song talks about real, true love between two people, not
  infatuation or surface romance.

  7) Jaage (Guru): The depth of this song is just amazing and everytime I

 7) Jaage (Guru): The depth of this song is just amazing and everytime I
hear it, I am moved so much. Again, pure, sincere emotion in this one.

I wanted to share the same too..
My drive is so easy with these little soft songs...

I wish there be a grammy or any high rated award (if not yet) for best songs
of the decade, then sure these 2 songs will top the list as mine.

New York Nagaram Munbe Vaa (my list toppers)
Netru illatha maatram
Putham puthu boomi vendum
Azhagu nilave (Pavithra)
Uyirum Neeye (Pavithra)
Pudhu Vellai Mazhai (Roja)
and few others...

We've found a new pacifier for my 13 month old daughter when she gets
irritated while travelling...
its nothing but the magic song Jai Ho, this go repeated until we reach the
destination.

I'm getting kind of used to / nothing spl about it being a proud fan of AR.
coz, we are always proud of him and proud to be a fan for the past
16+ years, he does us proud in every single thing he does.

Hi group,
It's my pleasure to say that I've reached the final few in Airtel Super Singer
2008, on vijay tv. And most of the songs I've sung in this competition have
been ARR sir's songs. To the extent that everyone acknowledges it on the show
as well, that I'm a die hard Rahmaniac :D

I have dedicated my perfomances in the wild card round to ARR sir and all his
fans, and all three songs that i've sung in this round are boss's :)

Of course, only one finalist will be selected from the current 5 contestants,
and this would be based on audience votes. Do watch the show, and if you like
my performance, I request you all to support me by voting for me. Even if I do
not go on to become a finalist, the music shall continue always :)

To vote, sms SS18 to 57827

In the wild card round, he performed 3 ARR songs, 2 of which have already
been telecast on Monday and Tuesday, and one more rocking performance will be

Hi Vijay,
we are watching you from bay area(Northern california,USA).
From Day 1 I felt you should be an ARR Fan.I really felt happy when you
brought some of our Boss Gems which were not heard frequently because of movie
failures.I really enjoyed your hindustani style of singing and all dance
numbers...You are versatile

Best of Luck

 Vijay,

I am your fan. I am the relative of Srivathsan, one of your friends. I was so
happy to know that you somehow connect to me thru Srivathsan...as right from
day one when I started watching Airtel SS program, I liked you for you sang
mostly ARR songs and you had this quality to improvize on it. Apart from you
I also like Prasanna (I want to put this on record), either of you should win
 this contest.

Fellow Rahmanics, this show , Airtel Super Singer, has assumed a good
coverage among Tamil Nadu audiance and Vijay winning it will be a victory of
a ARR fan, AN OFFICIAL ARR FAN :))). So I request each one of you to atleast
send one SMS, just one atleast , to 57827 and message it as SS18...

Gopal, if possible make this as a default footer in all our messages from the
group for the next couple of days.

 Bye,
 Karthik

 Hi group,
It's my pleasure to say that I've reached the final few in Airtel Super
Singer 2008, on vijay tv. And most of the songs I've sung in this competition
have been ARR sir's songs. To the extent that everyone acknowledges it on the
show as well, that I'm a die hard Rahmaniac :D

I have dedicated my perfomances in the wild card round to ARR sir and all his
fans, and all three songs that i've sung in this round are boss's :)

Of course, only one finalist will be selected from the current 5 contestants,
and this would be based on audience votes. Do watch the show, and if you like
my performance, I request you all to support me by voting for me. Even if I
do not go on to become a finalist, the music shall continue always :)

To vote, sms SS18 to 57827
