Open Alert List receive error message Cann ot create the COM object for AR System User”

2008-11-18 Thread Sergio Tomillero
Hello,

In Remedy Alert, when an user receives an alert, selects it from the list
and clicks on Open Alert List button, these two messages appears:

- Cannot create the COM object for AR System User. Returned error code is
0x80010005
- An error has happened in the start of AR System User session. Description
of OLE automatization error: Cannot perform operation because the user has
shut down the application

Once the user clicks OK for each message, he can see the alert list form.
Any idea about how to solve it?

Configuration:
ARServer 6.3 patch 20
Remedy User / Alert: 6.3 patch 24
Remedy User OS: Windows XP

Thanks in advance
Kind regards,
Sergio Tomillero

Re: ARS for non Trouble Ticketing applications

2008-11-18 Thread Mark Gemmell
Hi,

Way back in 2001 I was part of the team that built a big work order management
system for Telefonica. It is still in production and processes 30,000 work
orders per day, so you *can* think big if you want.

These days we build CRM ITIL suites... the usual Remedy sweet spot but with
cooler telephony integration.

I wouldn't use ARS for just *anything* but there's a whole World of business
processes out there waiting to be automated, and doing it in Java is no fun!

Best of luck

Mark

Which version of ARServer and ARAdmin? Patch Levels? Database and server

If it matches mine, I'm game for trying it, as long as it doesn't really

All,

Both a colleague and myself have seen this behaviour fairly consistently
...

In the admin tool, go to Add/Remove licenses, and select the AR Server.
License type shows up correctly with all the relevant details, and shows
a type of Server.

Leave it for a while, other windows over the top, then come back and
instead of showing type as Server, its decided to show Demo.

Bizarre, and not quite end-of-the-world stuff, but its ever so slightly
disturbing. Anyone else on the list seen this happen?

Been there, done that, even deleted the Default Admin View (the only

Change Calendar errors

2008-11-18 Thread Ramey, Anne
ITSM 7 patch 7 installed on Red Hat Linux 4 kernel 2.6.9-78.0.5.ELsmp. ARS is
at 7.0.1 patch 5. When I installed ITSM patch 7 (upgraded from 4) my change
calendar stopped working. In the user client I get 3 errors:
An Error has occurred in the script on this page.
Error: 'Calendar' is undefined
URL: https://its.support.nc.gov/arsys/plugins/DashboardPlugins/param

An Error has occurred in the script on this page.
Error: 'MonthGrid' is undefined
URL: https://its.support.nc.gov/arsys/plugins/DashboardPlugins/param

An Error has occurred in the script on this page.
Error: Object Expected
URL: https://its.support.nc.gov/arsys/plugins/DashboardPlugins/param

When I access it via a browser, I don't see the errors, but it still doesn't
work properly. The calendar will come up, it will display the day, or week,
etc. but when you click on a change, it never is selected and you can never
pull up the full details of a change from the calendar. That makes it less
than useful. The URL it displays appears to be correct. I'm running Tomcat
on the same red hat version for my mikd-tier servers. No one else seems to be
able to re-create it, but its happening in all 3 of our environments (dev,
test, and production). I'm unsure what to try to fix it, or where to look to
find the error.

Thanks,
Anne Ramey

It seems that after the migration it cannot get the user name.

It's a pretty painful process, but I will attempt to explain.

When creating a new record on this form, I have to take GPS coordinates
(provided by user), plug them into a mapping program to see where the
site is located (predefined territories on the map), then assign it the
appropriate number for that territory (1-9).

I wanted to create workflow that would create a .CSV file and save it to
a specified location, then open the map (which I have linked to the .CSV
file) and update.

I have it all working except that I have to save the form first; then
press the button that fires the workflow. Once it opens I can see what
territory it's in and go back and update the ticket.

I was hoping to be able to do it before actually saving the form the
first time, but it sounds like that might not be feasible.

A report is generally pulled from the database and not from the current
transaction that has not yet been committed to the database. Why do you
want to pull a report before the transaction is committed anyways? Just
curious?

You could perhaps 'work around' this by committing the transaction to a
temporary table using Direct SQL prior to saving the request and pulling
the report off that temporary table.

I know this is probably simple, but my brain is having more problems

I want the active link to create a report from information on the
current screen. The thing that has me stumped is that I need to do this
prior to the record being saved.
I'm able to get it to work after the record is submitted using the
qualification of 'Request ID' = $Request ID$, but of course that will
only work after the record has been saved and I need to be able to do it
before saving.

RMA for customers

Company/Contact/Products Master DB

Purchasing

Technical Support (for customers)

Customer Feedback

Problem Tracking (for internal engineering group)

Various specialized tracking systems for beta customers

Time Tracking System (Remedy backend with a Java GUI)

Oh and they also have old Help Desk 5.6 for internal tech support. That

Connecting a form to data in another database

none of my field definitions are as they were in the past. Everything is
an integer (like Priority, Case Type, and most importantly the date

translated) field types? Date fields will be date fields instead of
integers...

Create the fields on your View form as the correct type of field. i.e.
Create a Date field on the view form. In the Database tab put the
correct database field name in the View Information Name field

For Selection fields do the same thing... Create a selection field with
the correct choices and just fill out the Database tab with the correct
database field information.

Am trying to size discovery hardware, and ran into an issue. BMC's docs say
that the limit per server is 2.6 million CIs, but after deeper questioning,
that's just the highest number they tested, not the highest number a given
server will actually handle.

Does anyone have any real life experience pushing more CIs than that through
one Foundation Discovery service into the CMDB? If so, I'd appreciate
knowing your hardware, settings, performance stats, etc. We're looking at
about 10 million.

Re: HTML Email Template

2008-11-18 Thread Jon Chau
Janet,

If you want to view the email you could modify the entry so it gets sent to
your address. Then export the record and import it into your production
environment if the mailbox configurations are the same and if you have the
templates there.

Otherwise, you could use a different mailbox for your dev environment. We
have a filter on our dev environment that changes the 'Send Message' field
to No when the 'Message Type' is Outgoing and the 'Create Date' =
'Modified Date' on modify. Then if you want to see a specific message, you
can just select the record you want and hit the Send button.

Re: HTML Email Template

2008-11-18 Thread Hall Chad - chahal
I haven't done HTML emails, so I can't speak to that. But you could add
workflow to suppress emails for all but a select few email addresses.
Then you could turn your Email Engine on and let it send emails to one
of those email addresses.

We do this in our dev and test environments. We have custom workflow
which will suppress emails for everyone except the list of email
addresses we define in a separate custom form. I can provide more
details if needed, but you probably get the idea. An even simpler method
would be to hard code a list of email addresses in a custom AR System
Email Messages filter so it changes 'Send Message' to No unless its
one of the defined email addresses.

I had previously done the install with patch 5 and it went fine. I have
installed it on patch 8 on the Development server without any problems.
The only difference between the dev server and the QA is, that  there are two
servers in QA as part of the server group. I have tried installing after taking
the server out of the server group and doing it as a stand alone server, no
luck.

thank you as always for any help or pointers you can provide.

Re: Work Log Conversion utility

2008-11-18 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

I just wanted to point out that the RRR|DiaryX-utility is FREE.

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se

Products from RRR Scandinavia:
* RRR|License - Not enough Remedy licenses? Save money by optimizing.
* RRR|Log - Performance issues or elusive bugs? Analyze your Remedy logs.
* RRR|Translator - Manage and automate your language translations.
Find these products, and many free tools and utilities, at http://rrr.se.

You could write one yourself using remedy workflow. I've had to do
this before, it's not too hard. Processing would take a while, but it
 would be free.

Ray,

I think that you'll find it just depends on the Market Sector that your
focused on. I suspect that as far as the US Federal sector goes, things
will remain relatively strong. Financial and Manufacturing will probably
see some difficulty as companies tighten up. I would imagine that is true
for State government also. They are really feeling the pinch with all of
the unfunded federal mandates out there and a huge drop in tax revenues

I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect it's going to get worse before it gets
better

Re: Server Hangs

Help

I believe we may have found the culprit of our server hang ups. I
believe we've traced it to an Active Link (which really confuses me) and
I'm hoping that someone might have a clue as to why. The strangest thing
is that the server seemed to hang as soon as the Active Link was
enabled, without even firing.

Is this even possible?

I'm not 100% sure this is the problem, but it's really starting to look
like that might be it. I can attach the def file for the Active Link if
anyone wants to see, but below are the actions it performs.

I have the Active Link performing 4 actions and being triggered by a
button press.

Action 1: Set Fields = Sets a value to a display only
field with the change flag disabled. (the path for the report generated
in action 2)

Action 2: Open Window= Open the report form and
runs a predefined report and saves as .csv on local machine.

Action 3:Run Process= C:\Program
Files\Microsoft MapPoint\mappoint.exe /U C:\SOC Apps\SOC_MapIt.ptm
(This updates the map file which is linked to the csv file created in
action 2.

Action 4:Open Window= Opens a confirmation box window. (I
have another separate active link that fires after this one that closes
the confirmation window... I knowI have no idea why I did it
this way.

Anyone have any ideas? I am thoroughly confused.

Check the Windows Temp driectory. Check at the time when you perform
certain operation if there is a temp file that gets created that keeps
growing indefinitely to a point it starts eating out most of your disk
space.

If you notice this, yes we are facing a similar problem and I am still
in the process of troubleshooting it. For us it turns out that there are
some fields that have somehow got corrupted in their definitions on the
forms that result in this problem.

Using a debug version of the arserverd process, I am in the process of
finding which fields are causing this problem and eliminating it by
changing the properties of the field and saving it.

We've begun having a strange problem. Our server has begun to hang
making searching or creating records on most forms impossible. It will
still allow you to log in and work with some of our smaller forms (6 or
so fields), but it makes our Trouble Report form hang.

The error message you get after a few minutes states: ARERR [94]
Timeout during database query -- consider using more specific search
criteria to narrow the results, and retry the operation :

You have to either restart the services or totally reboot the server to
recover.

Below I've listed a couple of symptoms that seem odd to me.

1.You can search for a specific ticket number and get the results
just fine, but if you search something that will return multiple results
it hangs.

2.As stated above, searching for multiple results causes it to hang,
but it will populate tables with multiple results with no problems and
will allow you to refresh them with no issues at all.

Re: Load Balanced Remedy - Load Balanced Oracle environments?

2008-11-18 Thread Garrison, Sean (Norcross)

Word of Caution on an Oracle RAC ... make sure you allocate a lot of memory to
the db. Here is what remedy recommends:

Small DB:
CPU 2
Memory 4 Gig
Concurrent Users1-400

sga_target 1-2 gigs
pga_aggregate-target1 gig

Medium DB:
CPU 4
Memory 8 Gig
Concurrent Users401-800

sga_target 3-4 gigs
pga_aggregate-target2 gig

Large DB:
CPU 8
Memory 16 Gig
Concurrent Users800 or more

sga_target 6-8 gigs
pga_aggregate-target2-4 gig

(page 18 on the Performance Tuning for Business Service Management Document)

One problem we ran into with RAC: 4 servers x 1 gig of memory is not equal to
1 server X 4 gigs of memory. The more memory you allocate to the DB the better
your performance. So if your remedy db is shared among other databases on the
same server you may not be able to allocate a whole lot of memory to the db.

Something to keep in mind.

Thanks,

Sean

Been asked an intriguing question.

Our current Remedy environment :

- Hardware load balancer
- 2 x ARS 7.0.1 Remedy servers running on Solaris
- 1 x Oracle database server running on Solaris

Looking to the future and scaling the application, we're looking at load
balanced Oracle solutions (I've heard about an Oracle RAC - real application
cluster?), and our DBA has stated that Remedy will not work against an Oracle
RAC in a load balanced mode.

Anyone on the list have experience of running Remedy against a load balanced
Oracle cluster? Any case studies, or information to share?

Re: Max CIs on a Discovery server

2008-11-18 Thread Guillaume Rheault
Just to expand a little on this topic
If my memory servs me well, the limit on the number of CIs is around 4 million
if you keep the default settings on FD/TD. At around 4 million CIs, the JRE
hits the 2 GB limit, and the discovery can't run no more The 2.6 million CI
limit on the docs is a conservative estimate, plus they are taking into account
all the relationships too.

When you hist the 2 GB limit, you need to partition the discovery. If you have
10 millions CIs, you'll need 3 or 4 discovery servers, configured so the
discoveries don't overlap.

Typically each discovery server is a 4 GB memory dual processor server, that is
what is recommended.

The real hardcore limit is the JRE running under the discovery tool, that can
only grow to 2GB.
You will need to have multiple discovery servers if you hit that 2 GB limit

Am trying to size discovery hardware, and ran into an issue. BMC's docs say
that the limit per server is 2.6 million CIs, but after deeper questioning,
that's just the highest number they tested, not the highest number a given
server will actually handle.

Does anyone have any real life experience pushing more CIs than that through
one Foundation Discovery service into the CMDB? If so, I'd appreciate
knowing your hardware, settings, performance stats, etc. We're looking at
about 10 million.

Thanks!

Re: ARS for non Trouble Ticketing applications

2008-11-18 Thread Steve McDonald
I wrote an application(with help from the perl API) that was used to track
calls to our licensees 4 times per month. the calls were a secret shopper
kind of thing. On the first of the month an escalation fired that preloaded
the survey form with over 12k blank survey forms. the callers pressed a
Next Call button and the next randomzed survey was displayed.

That was a fun one.

The one that tracked manual credit card autorizations real-time to predict
third-party prosessor communication problems was fun too.

Midtier Time Zone Issues

2008-11-18 Thread Paul Blasquez
Hello,

I've gone through the archives and I cannot find a situation quite like
mine so I'm opening a new thread.

The issue I am having is that the mid-tier is reading the user's Windows
Time Zone information, and I want it to either use the server OS time
zone, or read from the User Preference form.

My goal is to have everyone across several time zones use the same time
zone on the mid-tier regardless of their Windows setting. I cannot find
a way to override the Windows Time Zone at this time.

I have tried without success:

-Setting the Locale portion of the User Preferences form to be en_US and
PST time zone, with the Mid-Tier using the Preference Server.
-Removing the Preference Server from the Mid-Tier settings completely

The User Preference setting is working correctly if I use the User
Client, but not the Mid-Tier.

Here is my AR System and Mid Tier environment:

Mid Tier Version7.1.00 Build 200708221849
Web Server Information Apache Tomcat/5.5.17
Operating System Name SunOS

I hacked around this by modifying the TimezoneFinder.js file to always

ARERR 91 and 9351 at new site

2008-11-18 Thread ChrisF
Hello,

I am at a new site trying to access my Remedy server with the client
and/or mid-tier.

With either method I get an error trying to load the Incident or
Problem Management Console.

On the client, the system hangs for a bit and then displays:
ARERR (91) RPC Call failed: RPC: Unable to receive; Asynchronous
event occurred

On the mid-tier, the system hangs for a bit and then displays:
Unable to set up data connection which is preventing the application
from working correctly (ARERR 9351)

When I click Ok on either message, a blank Incident Management Console
displays.

Other forms open OK, and sites local to the server work OK too.

Could latency be causing this? I have eliminated any router or
firewall issues.

At all times after it is started once started..

An easy way to check for tomcats processes is grep for the installation path..
when listing your processes.. For eg if Tomcat is installed on /usr/apache do a

ps -ef | grep /usr/apache

This will definitely reteurn all processes that are running from within that
directory.

Hope this helps..

Cheers

Hi Guys
An install problem with the SLM Module. I am trying to install the SLM Module
on my QA server, and the install repeatedly fails. It gives the message that
the install finished successfully, but no SLM forms appear on the server.
Looking at the install logs, there does not seem to be any errors. It just
reaches a stage where it re-starts the ARSever after doing part of the install
and then gives the message that the install was succesful and exits. Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated.
I am talking to BMC support regarding this issue, and they seem as stumped as I
am.

ARS 7.0.1 patch 8
Oracle 10
SunOs 5.10
SLM 7.01

I had previously done the install with patch 5 and it went fine. I have
installed it on patch 8 on the Development server without any problems.
The only difference between the dev server and the QA is, that  there are two
servers in QA as part of the server group. I have tried installing after taking
the server out of the server group and doing it as a stand alone server, no
luck.

thank you as always for any help or pointers you can provide.

Did you notice any files in your Temp directory that might be growing
constantly eventually filling up the entire disk space? I'm assuming no since
you said you would check on that..

If you suspect that AL, why not delete it and recreate it?

After deleting it check the underlying meta tables like actlink_set,
actlink_open, actlink_process to make sure that all references to that AL have
been deleted after it is deleted from the Admin tool. Since its a suspect AL,
you want to make sure that it doesn't get deleted 'leaving a few traces'

I believe we may have found the culprit of our server hang ups.  I believe
we’ve traced it to an Active Link (which really confuses me) and I’m hoping
that someone might have a clue as to why. The strangest thing is that the
server seemed to hang as soon as the Active Link was enabled, without even
firing.

Is this even possible?

I’m not 100% sure this is the problem, but it’s really starting to look like
that might be it. I can attach the def file for the Active Link if anyone wants
to see, but below are the actions it performs.

I have the Active Link performing 4 actions and being triggered by a button
press.

Action 1:   Set Fields     =  Sets a value to a display only field with
the change flag disabled. (the path for the report generated in action 2)

Action 2:   Open Window        =  Open the report form and runs a
predefined report and saves as .csv on local machine.

Action 3:    Run Process        =  C:\Program Files\Microsoft
MapPoint\mappoint.exe /U C:\SOC Apps\SOC_MapIt.ptm  (This updates the map
file which is linked to the csv file created in action 2.

Action 4:    Open Window    =   Opens a confirmation box window.  (I have
another separate active link that fires after this one that closes the
confirmation window... I knowI have no idea why I did it this way.

Anyone have any ideas? I am thoroughly confused.

Check the Windows Temp driectory. Check at the time when you perform certain
operation if there is a temp file that gets created that keeps
growing indefinitely to a point it starts eating out most of your disk space.

If you notice this, yes we are facing a similar problem and I am still in the
process of troubleshooting it. For us it turns out that there are some fields
that have somehow got corrupted in their definitions on the forms that result
in this problem.

Using a debug version of the arserverd process, I am in the process of finding
which fields are causing this problem and eliminating it by changing the
properties of the field and saving it.

We've begun having a strange problem.  Our server has begun to hang making
searching or creating records on most forms impossible.  It will still allow
you to log in and work with some of our smaller forms (6 or so fields), but it
makes our Trouble Report form hang.

The error message you get after a few minutes states: ARERR [94] Timeout
during database query -- consider using more specific search criteria to narrow
the results, and retry the operation :

You have to either restart the services or totally reboot the server to
recover.

Below I've listed a couple of symptoms that seem odd to me.

1.    You can search for a specific ticket number and get the results just
fine, but if you search something that will return multiple results it hangs.

2.    As stated above, searching for multiple results causes it to hang, but it
will populate tables with multiple results with no problems and will allow you
to refresh them with no issues at all.

There is a placeholder in server.xml file in tomcat which looks something like
below (if you have deployed an app under webapps directory..you can replace

Context path=/app docBase=app debug=0
 reloadable=true crossContext=true

Make changes appropriately.

Shutdown tomcat.

Start tomcat.

Do ps -ef || grep java. You should be able to see jdk version that tomcat
uses and something like below
