Free graphical Midtier/AR System/Dashboards memory/CPU profiling tool

2011-05-27 Thread John Baker
Dear Listers,

Earlier this year, we provided a video on monitoring Midtier and AR
System using jconsole. The jconsole tool uses JMX and is primarily for
monitoring your Midtier, AR System Java plugin server, Dashboards, etc.

We've produced a new video that demonstrates how to profile memory usage
using the jvisualvm tool, a hidden gem within the Java Development
Toolkit. The video covers the following:

* An overview of jvisualvm functions.
* How to profile memory usage on the Midtier.
* Take snapshots of memory usage, essential for reporting memory issues
to BMC.
* And for the most curious, how to examine the state of objects held in
memory.

The video can be found here:

http://www.javasystemsolutions.com/jss/video/view/MidTier-JVisualVM

Whilst the video demonstrates how to profile memory, a CPU trace can be
taken by using the CPU button next to the memory button at 1m22s.

jvisualvm is a superb tool and we hope this is a useful addition to your
support toolkit.

Patrick, thanks for the link!

JD, it is strange. I'm fairly certain that BMC has gutted their training
department. There are plenty of classes in the catalog, but they're not
offerring much. Maybe it's always been that way, I don't know.

Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong.

BMC used to offer a lot more class options than they do now. I haven't
noticed if any of the partners (Rapid Technologies, Column, etc..) are
still allowed to offer training.

Re: BMC:Analytics Training?

2011-05-27 Thread Pierson, Shawn
I've also noticed that they have shifted a LOT of the few classes they offer to
their online classes, which I am not a huge fan of.

For BMC Analytics, you're probably better off just learning how Business
Objects works and getting some report writing classes in BOXI. I work closely
with the reporting team in my organization and they say that there is a wide
variety of BOXI classes available from different vendors. If you already know
ITSM and the basic structure of the data, it should be very easy to just get
the BOXI training and be able to use BMC's universe.

Thanks,

Re: BMC:Analytics Training?

2011-05-27 Thread Jason Miller
I think Column has a facility in NY were they do training. We recently went
through Column for training but basically they resold us BMC education and
we ended up at BMC's office in San Jose (I prefer training by BMC anyway).

A few years ago we arrange a local training course in San Diego through
Rapid it was cancelled a week or two before the class (glad it was local).
We ended up in Pleasanton for real BMC training.

Regarding the course offerings, when we were at BMC a few weeks ago there
was some discussion as to why we were taking ITSM 7.5 courses. Answer being
7.5 is the latest version being offered. It did sound like 7.6.03 was just
about ready when it was held and revamped for 7.6.04. I tried to make the
point that BMC is pushing these new versions pretty hard and it appears
there is a pretty good adoption rate of 7.6.0x, they should be able to back
it up with the appropriate training.

DSO Delete

2011-05-27 Thread Frank Caruso
ARS 6.3
Solaris/Oracle

We are passing records between ARS servers. The records are transferred
using Independent Copy. The records only go one way. The receiving server
stores the sending servers EntryID (field ID 1) in a separate field which
the master server uses during updates. The master server does not sore the
remote records unique identifier.

All is working fine but we now have to handle deletes of records from the
master. I cannot figure out a way to do this from the master server without
knowing the unique identifier of the remote record. Can I use Distribute
Delete in this situation or is there another way of doing this?

Thank you.

Re: DSO Delete

2011-05-27 Thread patchsk
Distribute delete may not work in this scenario.
However you can make a dso update on the master record with a
particular field set to a flag, say: fld1= deletefromsecond.
You can write a filter on the second server like:
RunIF:$USER$ = DSO AND 'fld1' = deletefromsecondserver
Action: Application delete entry $RequestID$

We are passing records between ARS servers. The records are transferred
using Independent Copy. The records only go one way. The receiving server
stores the sending servers EntryID (field ID 1) in a separate field which
the master server uses during updates. The master server does not sore the
 remote records unique identifier.

All is working fine but we now have to handle deletes of records from the
master. I cannot figure out a way to do this from the master server without
knowing the unique identifier of the remote record. Can I use Distribute
Delete in this situation or is there another way of doing this?

 Thank you.

Business Object Infoview session timeout

2011-05-27 Thread Mr. Tee
Hi,

We have a problem with the Business Object Infoview were the session
time out after approx. 30 minutes.

This happens both when we are working actively - and when we are idle/inactive.

Can anyone help with a setting so that this only happens when we are
inactive - so we are not disconnected while working?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

filter consuming an external webservice is not sending namespace

2011-05-27 Thread patchsk
Anyone seen this issue where a remedy filter consuming a webservice is
not sending the namespaces in the xml sent to external system.
It is sending like AbstractDescsummary/AbstractDesc instead of
tic:AbstractDescabstractdesc/tic:AbstractDesc.
I tried with soapUI and it is sending correctly with the namespace
included.
Any ideas on alternatives?
Writing a custom java client or asking the external system to not use
namespace is the last option.

We had the same issues with BOXI. Resolved it with the following. Read the
below config changes and reference the two links below. This resolved our
timeout issues which were heavily impacting our report development resources.
Nate.

Navigate to the deployed application where the web.xml file containing the
session timeout for WebI Report processing: Tomcat ex:
JavaAppServerInstallDir/webapps/AnalyticalReporting/WEB-INF/web.xml
Open the web.xml in a text editor such as Notepad or vi Edit the following
line:
session-config session-timeout20/session-timeout /session-config This
line is in minutes.Choose a value as required
Save the web.xml file. Stop and start the Java Application Server
Change the below paramters in Central management console.
Log on to Central management console (CMC) in XI 3.1
Go To #Applications# under Manage
Right Click (Web Intelligence) Manage Properties.
Increase the time of #auto-save time delay# to 120min.
Click Save Close

Re: BMC:Analytics Training?

2011-05-27 Thread JD Hood
It is rather frustrating to pay the prices they ask for a three-hour, WBT
power-point presentation that basically skims the docs.

I'd rather have an instructor-led course, presuming the instructor is
actually knowledgeable. Someone with a brain to pick between sessions.

For BMC Analytics, you’re probably better off just learning how Business
Objects works and getting some report writing classes in BOXI. I work
closely with the reporting team in my organization and they say that there
is a wide variety of BOXI classes available from different vendors. If you
already know ITSM and the basic structure of the data, it should be very
easy to just get the BOXI training and be able to use BMC’s universe.
