Performance issue on Menu
I have a table with about 22,000 records. I have a unique index on 2 field on this table. On another form I have a Character field that connects via a menu to these records. Even though I have an index, it takes a good 40 seconds for the menu item to show all of the records when activated. Is there any way to increase the performance on this? Looks like it works this way on the desktop client and the midtier. Hi, If you want to load 22,000 records into your client, it will always take time. Would it not be possible to limit the selection? If you are loading all records, indexes are not important, as everything must be read anyhow. Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se Products from RRR Scandinavia (Best R.O.I. Table drill down not working for one form on mid-tier
Hi All, When I double click on a selected row on this table from web, the form is open in modified mode, but without any data populated. And: 1) it works fine with remedy client 2) other tables and/or forms works fine on web 3) I made a copy of this form without any workflow, created a new table based on this copy form from scratch with a few sample records, it still doesn't work 4) Furthermore, I deleted all the none-core fields, only left the core fields from this copy form, it still doesn't work! Platform: ARS server and mid-tier 7.1 patch 7 Really appreciate any ideas!! Re: Performance issue on Menu
Lisa, How are you qualifying the search on the menu? If needed, run a SQL log to see what query is actually getting passed to the database, and work from there. Often, it's not what you'd expect. Hopefully, you're doing something on the front-end to narrow down what shows in that menu from 22k, though! Re: Compound qualification for a GetList web service
Hi Chintan, Thanks for the additional suggestions. I believe I will take a different aproach... Instead of returning complete records on the get-list request based on the qualification supplied by the user, I will return a subset of the fields, specifically excluding the field(s) that may contain information that is not for general consumption. But I will include the Entry-id as one of the returned fields. Then I will provide another web service (get-entry) which will return all of the fields for a single entry, specified by Entry-id. Then I can impose my additional restriction on the qualification for the request since the customer will just be supplying the Entry-id and not a complete qualification. I know how to do this and have successfully done it on another service. This is not exactly what I was shooting for because it requires additional steps for the user, but it will give me assurance that the restricted information does not leak out through this web service. Thanks again for your thoughts on this question. Larry On Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 11:04 PM, Chintan Shah cbss...@yahoo.com wrote: ** Ah..I c what you are saying now..Sorry, in all of my conversation, I thought you would be comparing XPATH Qualification to some field on form but that's not the case. My bad for not reading the thread properly. IMHO, there are 2 solutions for this(there could be more..but this is what I can think of so far)..again this might not be the most elegant solution on planet but it can get job done. 1. Build an automated workflow that would push all Distribution!=Internal records to a staging form and build web-service from staging form. In that case you will never need AND 'Distribution'!=Internal qualification appended. This is probably good since amount of records to traverse would be lesser than what is on source form and it would take query off the source form. One of caveat I see upfront is that you will have to spend time in building that staging form(you can probably just do a save as on source form) and maintaining that workflow that pushes records to it. 2. Client should supply complete qualification(as you mentioned you will be at the mercy of the client) Does #1 help or does it over-complicate :)? Re: Performance issue on Menu
As Misi noted, a multi-tiered menu could be very helpful here – if you have indexes declared, those same datapoints should be useful as groupings as well for a multi-tiered menu. Or they could be separate elements set by the customer for the search to narrow the selection and make the query faster. These could be tiered elements like Product Categorization uses, in a multi-tiered menu or set of menus, or separate elements like Incident Matching (customer name, location, priority, etc) on a control panel with a list of query results in a table below. Perhaps some of these datapoints could be set by the system from what is known about the user; without knowing the data involved it's hard to guess, but an example would be showing by default sites that are in the same state as the customer, or issues that are associated with the laptop the customer owns, or the top 10, 20, 100 choices made by similar customers. This could also let you present most of the desired customer choices without having to do an unqualified query. Kelly Logan, Sr. Systems Administrator (Remedy), GMS ProQuest | 789 E. Re: Performance issue on Menu
Form a UI design perspective that is kind of harsh; here's your 22,000 records, select one. Unless you have a really good drill down tier structure to hide many of the values that do not apply it is likely people would pick the wrong value out of frustration. You are already seeing the performance impact in the amount of time it takes to open the menu but think about why. That is 22k records being sent over the wire and being stored in memory on the client's computer. With modern computers and a strong LAN this probably isn't much of an issue but will that be the case for all of your users? Can you give us a little more detail about your requirements? I am sure the community could help with a solution :) Jason On Jun 10, 2011 6:25 AM, Kemes, Lisa lisa.ke...@te.com wrote: I want them to choose one of the records instead Typing it in and getting it wrong. Another possibility (perhaps more forward looking) is to upgrade to AR System 7.6.04 or later and utilize the auto-complete feature. It's easier now than it was a few versions ago. What makes it easier is the fixed, floating licenses are stored in the data base. Anyway what you do is create a DNS alias for your production server. You configure desktop clients and any MidTier servers to connect using the alias. Any internal connections like the email engine should also use the alias. Make sure everything works right. Install the second server to the DB instance. Make sure you do the installation as an upgrade. Like with the production server make sure that internal connections use the alias. Apply any server license while you have the fail over up and running. (You can get a hot stand by server license at no cost but you do have to renew it each year). If you need to switch to the fail over server, you shut down the production. Change DNS alias. Start up the fail over. Desktop clients may need to flush their DNS cache. In our case we also have several MidTier instances that are running on separate servers around the world. Users connect to the MidTier servers using a DNS alias defined with in the regional zone. The big thing is to test the stand by configuration at least once a year. You will be surprised at the little things hiding in config files that you forgot to change. Re: Table drill down not working for one form on mid-tier
Did you... 1.) Do workflow logging to see if the API and/or workflow logging is firing to set the data into the fields? You should probably see a +GLE or +GLEWF happening if it's strictly API stuff happening. There's also a chance that there's workflow that's setting all fields to NULL after window open. Sounds unlikely but I've seen it happen (as recently as 7.6.03...) 2.) Verify row level permissions on the data 3.) Try this as the admin user as well as the others? That said - I have seen a few mid-tier bugs where data didn't display in this way though. BMC will ask you for the logs if you call them though, so you might as well check it first. Re: Performance issue on Menu
However One of my current customers has 40,000+ sites. Consequently the Site+ field pulls 120,000+ records because the way the application was structured the Region/Site Group/Site menus do not just pull form site - they pull from a cascading set of join forms that include things like site aliases, etc. The tiered menu system should help in this Instance - BUT - the best practice view blow that philosophy out of the water. There is specific workflow in several places that set Region and Site Group to NULL when you hit the Site+ field. In other places those fields aren't even on the form. 4 minutes later you get your menu with120,000 records. Believe it or not they are laid out well enough that you can find your site quicklybut there's some weird design in there. We're still working with BMC support and RD on this issue. We need to free some space or expand the volume. I am hoping to free some space vs. going to the volume expansion well (again). Does anybody know if we can delete these files? (actually archive them, never know when you need original defs). Are they ever used again? If they are used again is that only during upgrades/patches/etc? Resize Box in 7.6.4 Overlay mode
Hi, Does anyone know how to resize a Box in 7.6.4? We have created an overlay of the form and the box . But the properties are disabled and we tried all the tags at the corner, middle, etc and none of it is working. This is a display only form... does this make a difference. Re: Resize Box in 7.6.4 Overlay mode
So, you have an overlay of the Form, View, and Field? Double-check all three. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Vindhya Samarasekera Sent: Friday, June 10, 2011 4:20 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Resize Box in 7.6.4 Overlay mode Hi, Does anyone know how to resize a Box in 7.6.4? Re: Resize Box in 7.6.4 Overlay mode
You have to make an overlay of the view also. Open the form and click Form - Create View Overlay.
