Re: [AsburyPark] Re: where'd everyone go?

2007-05-29 Thread GG518
Hey if places like Coney Island and Brazil where thousands of people walk
and hundreds of people ride bikes can do it so can Asbury Park.
Yes, they can designate a bike lane and enforce a speed limit on it. While I
did see people on bikes this weekend, a lot of them were respecting others
walking,I did see a few who did not.
I see no reason we can't have a bike lane as long as the police enforce it.

[AsburyPark] Re: Happy ~MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND~

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY, to all our Veterans. Monday, Americans will
pause to remember Veterans, from ALL wars. I can't help, but think of
the Poem, In Flanders Fields and the wearing of the Poppy, the
Memorial Flower. If you see a Veteran, with a bunch of red paper
poppies, please give a donation. The funds, from the donations, are
used to fund coffee parties at the VA Hospitals, in East Orange, Essex
County, Lyons, in Morristown, Veterans Haven, in Cumberland, Creative
Arts Festival, for disabled veterans and many other worthy causes, for
veterans or the families of veterans. Moina Belle Michael,
(8/15/1869-5/10/1944), also known as The Poppy Lady, initiated the
use of The Flanders Field Poppy, while serving in the overseas, YMCA
War Workers Hamilton Hall, Columbia University, New York City, when
the idea came to her, on Saturday, before Armistice, Nov. 9, 1918.
She resolved to wear a red poppy, of Flanders Fields as a sign of
remembrance and tribute to all who died in Flanders Fields and in the
war. Through this idea, the Poppy became universal and permanent, in
the national life of the English Speaking world, as a Memorial Symbol,
to the men who died for their country.

On August 12, 1920, at the Georgia Convention of the State Department
American Legion, the Poppy, was a dopted as the Memorial Flower and on
September 29, 1920, it was adopted by The National American Legion.
In 1921, The American Legion Auxiliary, was organized and they too,
adopted the Poppy, as their Memorial Flower. In May, 1940, The
National Executive Committee, of The American Legion, as recognition
for the benefits resulting from Miss Michael's idea, voted her a
Citation for Distinguished Service. Miss Michael, was born near Good
 Hope, in Walton County, Georgia.

This Poppy fact, is being furnished, because a veteran, interviewed by
the Coaster, didn't know the origin, of his own Memorial Flower. The
Poppy Chairmanship, was the very first committee, I chaired, 20 years
ago, when I joined Frederick Dempsey Post 266. The Post, was
chartered in Asbury Park, in 1922, after Frederick Dempsey, an Asbury
Park resident, of Embury Ave., now a part of Neptune Township.

He died in 1918, fighting in France and is buried, in hallowed ground.
Every year, a wreath, is placed on his grave, with the use, of Poppy
funds. If anyone goes to Veterans' Park on 5th Ave., the Post, has a
placque, among all the others and until 2002, was still chartered, in
Asbury Park. Post 266, is the host of the Memorial Day Parade and
refreshments, will be served afterwards, at 240 Drummond Ave.,
 Neptune. All are invited!

[AsburyPark] Re: where'd everyone go?

2007-05-29 Thread Hinge
Yesterday, I took a bike ride to the boardwalk, fully prepared to
dismount and walk my bike. As I was doing so, about 5 bicycles passed
me and the 3 cops that were hanging out at the entrance to CH. The
cops were deep in conversation and didn't even notice the bikes
passing by. I walked my bike about halfway to the Casino, and after
noticing about 2 dozen other cyclists riding by, I got on my bike and
rode the rest of the way, passing 2 more cops.
I noticed that the beach rules sign has been updated to show the new
hours that riding is allowed, but why aren't the police paying any
attention?
The person who posted earlier about the cyclists riding all over the
boardwalk is correct, but he needs to realize that if the people don't
know what the rules are, and if those rules aren't being enforced then
how are they to know they are doing anything wrong. To me, a bunch of
other cyclists on the boardwalk says it's ok to ride there.
I really don't understand why a simple bike lane hasn't been painted
on the boardwalk. AP has an opportunity to be progressive with bikes
on the boardwalk and promote responsible bike riding.

If the council decides  to allow bike riding on the boardwalk during
prime hours, then there has to be a dedicated lane for all bike
riders so the pedestrians can feel at ease and not have to be worried
about  being hit.  If we are not going to allow bike riding on the
boardwalk during prime hours, then the no bike riding rules need
 to be strictly enforced.

Had the same thought and conversation this weekend. Make a rule and
enforce it. Coney Island bw has a dedicated bike lane. Even with one,
you have to enforce it. Saw police (specials) walk right by people
riding after 12pm. Recipe for disaster.

Yes. However, I suggest that there is no specific speed limit
because then the police have a duty to prove the violater was going a
specific speed, which would be impossible. Violations would be for
reckless endangerment or some other vague infraction. But yes, a bike
lane say after 12 pm with good enforcement. Maybe someday we'll have
to worry about baby strollers too;)

[AsburyPark] Mario - APP Response to Pallone

2007-05-29 Thread dfsavgny
Keeping jobs in Asbury
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 05/29/07
Story Chat Post Comment

Metro Homes, which is building the Esperanza high-rise on the Asbury
Park beachfront, is helping the city's redeveloper meet its pledge to
hire as many city residents as possible for construction jobs. Many of
the 50 to 60 workers have been screened by the city's nonprofit job
training agency and are gaining valuable experience, and income,
working on the condominium project.

The hiring system employed by Metro Homes for the project is working
the way the city had envisioned. But area labor unions and Rep. Frank
Pallone Jr., D-N.J., have their own agendas. Even though union members
have worked on other phases of the project, they are upset Metro Homes
is not paying the nonunion workers the prevailing wage — the hourly
wage plus contributing to the worker's pension and benefit package.

As usual, it's all about money. One organizer said a first-year
apprentice in his dockbuilders, pile drivers and foundation workers
union would be paid $14.10 an hour, plus $22 an hour in pension and
benefits. He said the nonunion workers on the Esperanza were getting
$18 an hour.

If we don't take a stand now, we are going to see the continued
deterioration of who works on these sites, Pallone said at a protest
at the Esperanza last week.

The critics are failing to look at the big picture: allowing qualified
Asbury Park residents to benefit from the city's revitalization and
gain experience in the construction trades. It is vital for the city's
economic health that its residents find good jobs.

Metro Homes is reaching out to city residents, through the Asbury
Works job training program, in accordance with its commitment to the
redevelopers and the city. Only a small number of city residents are
construction trades union members. The unions should develop their own
outreach to bring more residents into their fold and provide the
training they need to advance.

[AsburyPark] Crossing Ocean Ave

2007-05-29 Thread dfsavgny
Ocean Ave looks great with the striping, etc. I am even encouraged by
the striped walkways at corners for pedestrians. Thus far the two way
traffic has not presented a problem as expected, however, it is early
in the season. On Sat i did almost get hit by a car that was traveling
the old one-way (northbound) but which was going way too fast and did
not stop for us in the walkway. Luckily a police car came by and they
pulled the car over. Let's put the orange cones out at the pedestrian
walkways like they do in other towns indicating that it is state law
to yield to pedestrians. Rethink a two-way stop sign at the bend near
the Empress.

[AsburyPark] Emory Street - Why are the drug dealers still in biz

2007-05-29 Thread Hinge
The other night, I took a long bike ride all over Asbury.
After cruising up and down Cookman, which is looking great, I took a
turn down Emory street to head home.
I was approached several times by drug dealers on bicycles, asking if
i wanted anything etc.
I see these same dealers on bikes in my neighborhood all the time.
I wonder why this crap is still going on. I know AP has enough trouble
to deal with, but how is it that obvious drug activity like that is
allowed to continue?
And back to the subject of cameras, there are many areas in our city
that could benefit from having them.
It's pretty depressing to think that Cookman is doing well, yet 2
blocks away it's drug city.
I think Asbury needs to work on new ideas on how to deal with it's
social problems.

Difficult to hit a moving target. The congregation point is Emory
Deli. Same owners operate several similar businesses in AP that also
have similar problems. We are trying to do something about. What you
can do to help is go to police station and file a complaint. Many

[AsburyPark] Stand Up For Asbury! - Additional homeless arriving in Asbury Park!

2007-05-29 Thread Paul Vail
The zoning board will reconvene tonight to consider the application for
the variances sought by the Market Street Mission.

More important testimony will be heard tonight by the board. I
encourage all those who oppose this mission to attend this hearing.

The stakes for Asbury Park are rising. This evangelical men's shelter
is already attracting homeless individuals to Asbury's streets, parks
and boardwalk.

These people are are not Asbury residents, former or otherwise. It is
no coincidence that these individuals have arrived in town now that the
Mission begins operations. Safety and quality of life for all Asbury
Park residents is being jeopardized.

Your presence at these hearings is invaluable and you are strongly
encouraged to attend.

I totally agree, and as I have in the past, i'll continue calling the
police when I see suspicious things...but honestly, I really don't
understand why obvious things like the drug dealers on their bikes
need us citizens to point it out to them. The other day, there were 3
AP cops hanging out at the boardwalk doing absolutely nothing but
having a good time, and 2 blocks away the same blonde prostitute that
has been doing business in my neighborhood for over a year now was
working, and 2 more blocks after that we have guys making obvious drug
deals. Something is very wrong with that in my opinion.

I've heard the discussion in our city many times about how building
new condos and bringing in new business's will help drive out the bad
guys and make the problem magically disappear.
So far, I see no evidence of that happening, and I really don't think
that the problem is going to magically disappear.
All one needs to do is look at Atlantic City as an example.
Their problems just got worse.
If Asbury really wants to improve their PR profile, and huge and
visible crackdown on street crime should really be taking place...not
just here and there, but daily.

[AsburyPark] Re: Emory Street - Why are the drug dealers still in biz

I totally agree, and as I have in the past, i'll continue calling the
police when I see suspicious things...but honestly, I really don't
understand why obvious things like the drug dealers on their bikes
need us citizens to point it out to them. The other day, there were 3
AP cops hanging out at the boardwalk doing absolutely nothing but
having a good time, and 2 blocks away the same blonde prostitute that
has been doing business in my neighborhood for over a year now was
working, and 2 more blocks after that we have guys making obvious drug
deals. Something is very wrong with that in my opinion.

Were they specials on the BW? I won't comment on them having a good
time, but if they are assigned to the BW, assuming they are doing
their job there, what can they do about the hooker or drug dealers
blocks away. There are only so many sets of eyes and hands. We are
just going to have to deal with it. It is much better than it was and
it will continue to get better. But there will always be crime and
criminals. Think of the surge in Bagdad. It's is like those bw games
where you hit the weasel in the hole. it is only when everyone refuse
to allow the conditions for the hookers and drug dealers to exist that
it can be eradicated.

I don't want to fault the AP police either because I do realize they
have a tough job here...but one has to laugh when you see cops hanging
out at the boardwalk and ignoring the bike regulations while 2 blocks
away there are no cops and a stinky AP prostitute cleaning her armpits
on the corner of 1st and Kingsley while waving down prospective clients.

Police are busting them and building their case. Would I like more?
yes, but I cannot fault the APPD. They are doing a yeoman's job. It
takes time. There are now two shifts of street crime units. Everyone,
including residents need to do their part. There are private citizens,
who I will not name, that have made a tremendous difference to the
quality of life here by their vigilance. Never turn your head. Have
 the APPD on speed dial.

[AsburyPark] Crime Rate Drops, City Credits Its Embrace of Surveillance

The Crime Rate Drops, and a City Credits Its Embrace of Surveillance
Technology
EAST ORANGE, N.J., May 28 — Detective Robert Harris starts patrolling the
raw streets of this worn-down city before he even leaves the parking lot at
Police Headquarters.

After climbing into his patrol car last Thursday, Detective Harris flipped
open his dashboard-mounted laptop computer and, with a few clicks, was able to
access live images of the streets ahead from video surveillance cameras.
A few more clicks, and he could view up-to-the-second police reports in this
city of 70,000, which within the past half decade posted crime rates as high
as twice the national average and where an average of five cars were reported
 stolen every day.
And if that were not enough, electronic listening devices mounted around the
city send an electronic signal to alert officers within seconds of a
shooting.
“This is something else,” Detective Harris, 30, said with a smile.
The convergence of those technological crime-fighting tools is in large part
the reason why police statistics show that the crime rate here has declined
by more than 50 percent in the past three years, East Orange officials say
Mr. Cordero has made a crackdown on so-called quality-of-life crimes a
priority — the hope being that attention to relatively minor issues like
loitering
and curfew violations by youngsters will deter such infractions from
evolving into more serious crimes.

Sometimes the public see things that are wrong, obvious things. It makes
you wonder why, or how police can't see this? There are lots of things police
are kept busy with, so its understandable sometimes. But when you see things
right out in the open, and there are police ridding by... why arn't they
picking up on the same things the public are?
