Old one will come down and new one in it's place.

[AsburyPark] Stuff wanted....

2008-07-09 Thread martin_kerri
Our old, crappy but faithful charcoal grill was stolen from the
parking lot of Holy Spirit Church recently. Somebody must have
brought it to a scrap metal place for cash because I can't imagine
anybody wanting it. If anyone, has one for us, please contact me
directly.

Also, The Bike Church is going on many trips this summer on our bikes.
This week we went fishing. Next week we are going to play tennis.
So, we are in need of poles and rackets. Seems like stuff that might
be hanging around in people's basements

And, of course, we always welcome bikes, parts and helmets

Thanks,
Kerri Martin
The Bike Church

The marketing and hype doesnt match the product.
Multicolored concrete buildings do not pass for good architecchture,

The past six months is when things took shape -a t elast on the BW.

Convention Hall and Casino are the onyl2 old buildings on the
boardwalk. 5th Ave with bandshell and the round building are from the
early 60's in an attempt at the point in time to draw people or was
inspired from the Worlds Fair in NYC. Modern or futuristic

The first ave building was more or less dull. The 3rd ave building was
crumbling apart.

Since mid feb of this year, the have been rebuilt. First ave almost
down to steel frame and new framing. 3rd ave all the old block,
concrete, roof etc, 5th ave , CH and more. Loads of work in a short
period of time. Streets, mini golf, lots.

Like night and day even from last year's minor Madison Marquette
participation.

The question is - what type of building WOULD be correct for the
boardwalk? Victorian? Modern? Futuristic, Fun? Brick, wood, stucco,
glass??

2008-07-09 Thread New Beetoap
Thanks for the background, but I still dont get it.
It took 6 years to get started ??

The things you mention about reconstruction are just a normal part
of any building rehab. Its done all over the place, not a big deal.

You ask what kind of buidings would be good.
All of your choices have some merit, some more; some less.

But colored concrete cubes ???
That should not even be in the running.

Reminds me of all the classic strip malls I see getting the fake
victorian make overs. Not to mention the new strip malls. Everything
looks the same and fake.

I read a lot about striving for great architechture in that local
paper - the TriCities. Didn't anyone care about it?

period of time. Streets, mini golf, lots.

Like night and day even from last year's minor Madison Marquette
 participation.

The question is - what type of building WOULD be correct for the
boardwalk? Victorian? Modern? Futuristic, Fun? Brick, wood,
stucco,
 glass??

[AsburyPark] Re: after the fact rant

2008-07-09 Thread Heshy
Jack,

I take your point and feel a twinge of that nostalgia as well, but
some things I DON'T miss AT ALL are printing up and posting a
gazillion flyers, taking out ads in the papers you mentioned, calling
people up and begging/harassing them to come to your gigs, and (worst
of all) sending out mailers via USPS. It was an effort that all too
often paid very slim dividends. One thing I am grateful about the
internet is that it did away with all that mess.

Also, not all was hunky dory with the scene as described. If you
didn't fit their particular format, you pretty much fell between the
cracks. I had the misfortune to being a little too bizarre for the
mainstream but too old-fashioned for the alternative crowd; cult
artist was something to be aspired to. The scene never quite knew
what to do with my music. Of course, it didn't help that I didn't go
to high school in the area, which is often the key to building a
band's fan base.

At any rate, thanks to everyone for your replies. For the record, I
was not referring to the Press, but rather the publication that has
positioned itself as the anti-Press since the Press left the
struggling city of its birth, if you take my meaning. It seems as if
they're ashamed and embarrassed about the whole music scene that
emanates from AP, despite all the lip service they give to supporting
all that's original and creative in the area.

I think our entire music scene went downhill after the demise of
106.3.
That station really supported local music, and their DJ's also
worked in The Green Parrot and other local clubs.
Many of us had the good fortune to do interviews with Matt on the
station, which was always fun.
Alot of younger musicians will say that the internet and myspace in
general have saved the music biz, but I have another take on it.
Back in the pre-internet/myspace days, 106.3, the Monmouth College
and Brookdale stations, and The Aquarian were the centers of our
local music universe. We weren't as distracted by being able to click
away. We were all reading the same papers, listening to the same
radio station. And it held the scene together, big time.
Along comes the internet and we're faced with a myriad of
distractions, including the internet itself. Now, instead of hanging
out in person, talking in person, we do much of it online. We'd
actually call people on the telephone rather then emailing them or
texting them. The time that we now waste here on the internet was
spent hanging out with your friends in the real world.
 I kinda miss that.

Reminds me of all the classic strip malls I see getting the fake

victorian make overs. Not to mention the new strip malls. Everything

looks the same and fake.

What?  How do you think they all look the same?  All the buildings are the
same style, modern.  But, I don't know if it's a true statement to say that
anything else you see around looks like them?  Use some of the previous plain
yellow brick buildings as examples.  How were they unique?  The same style
buildings can be found in near by Spring Lake.

or well designed?  That's how i read it, not sure if that's what you had
intended or not.  Almost like the boardwalk is the way it is, but we can hope
for better on the west side of ocean ave.
I think the boardwalk buildings are nice.  I mean, it's true, their not
that different or stand out features.  But were the ones before really that
stand out themselves?   Yea,  one could argue we had the chance, and we should
have went all out.  Ah, I don't know.

Hopefully Main Street will have received the attention it should have long
ago: I'm talking boastful eye-catching signs and/or banners proclaiming
progress so far, directions to the Cookman district's shopping and restaurant
row,
etc.

I'm talking simple window dressing type stuff for now until main street gets
the full treatment the town deserves. Same with Asbury Avenue which others
have addressed here.

Some time ago, I came ago across and posted the startling figures for the
number of cars that pass through this city each day via Main Street.

I can't find that post now, but the number could be multiplies by two
eyeballs and multiple passengers who pass through and could be encouraged to
check
us out.

Anyone have those vehicle numbers?

I forgot where I heard it, maybe it was a city meeting.  If down the road
main street is changed to one lane, AP is in trouble!  Do you know how many
cars go through both of those lanes each way?  Image if they were forced into
one.  Traffic!  Parallel parking?  Forget it!  Doing that in a one lane road
backs up the entire flow of traffic until the car is parked.  People are also
hesitant on parking because they don't feel like holding up traffic.  A mental
thing, maybe not even knowing their doing it.

[AsburyPark] Re: Bringing this up yet again

2008-07-09 Thread dougandcathy_mcqueen
Regarding my response to last week's post entitled Baronet Graffiti
Cleaned Up, I think everyone can acknowledge that there's a
difference between street art and malicious graffiti. I intended to
address the latter, specifically the prolific tagging that exists
in Asbury, on both public and private property. Although I didn't
see the Baronet piece, the title of the thread, 'graffiti',
implicated the malicious type.

The main problem is that the line is not usually clear. In the U.S.,
as in most countries, defacing property with graffiti without the
property owner's consent is considered vandalism, which is punishable
by law. Of course, sometimes graffiti is employed to communicate
social and political messages. To some, it is an art form worthy of
display in galleries and exhibitions, to others it is merely
vandalism.

Which raises the next question: who gets to decide? On private
property, does the owner have a say? What about public property?
The public decides to deal with the issue by passing laws that ban
the defacement of property without permission. Unfortunately for
some, these laws don't distinguish among the artistic merit of the
graffiti...but they could. Why not advocate to change the law making
only BAD graffiti a crime? Meanwhile, it all gets lumped together.

I'd like to see more art in Asbury, but since this isn't Lord of the
Flies, we all have to live by the rules. Don't like the rules:
change them to make Asbury Park a more art-friendly place.

--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, chris.hartsgrove
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I don't really come on here very often... I have plenty of other
things taking up my time at
the moment. But I did go back and read some of the threads from a
few days ago that
centered around the painting of the Baronet wall, and the
subsequent debate about
graffiti. And as artist, I feel obligated to throw my opinion into
the mix.

First of all, graffiti is not necessarily vandalism. Vandalism is
defined as malicious
destruction or defacement of public or private property. I
strongly doubt that you could
view a detailed swarm of multi-colored painted flies as having a
malicious intent. There is
a huge difference between some pissed off kid going out with a can
of spray paint and
putting something offensive, inane, or (this is still Asbury) gang-
related on the wall of
someone's business, and a talented artist putting his mark on the
wall off an abandoned
 building.

Good street art adds to it's surrounding environment... and with
the case of the Baronet
flies, go down and take a look at that block in the daylight. You
would be hard pressed to
find another spot along Kingsly that looks nearly as reminiscent of
the Asbury of ten years
ago. I'm curious to know what kind of aesthetic taste you need to
posses to think that
those spray painted flies detract from the visual beauty of the
empty lots of dirt and
compacting stone, boarded up windows, and the skeleton of the
Esperanza (the ultimate monument to Irony).

One of the things that Asbury Park has become know for in recent
years is it's art. Asbury
Park is filled with talented artists, many of whom see the
abandoned buildings that litter
the city as the perfect canvas for their work. In fact, they are
just about the only people
around here who have an interest in said buildings that doesn't
include tearing them down
or blogging about how they shouldn't be torn down... either way,
they're the only ones
doing anything with those buildings that isn't implicitly lazy and
counterproductive.
Personally, I want to see more street art. It would make the
landscape of Asbury a bit more
 interesting, if nothing else.

Ever since the early 80's, there have been those who debate the
artistic validity of graffiti
and street art. As a whole, the art world has settled the debate
and moved on. Having an opinion on any art put into the public realm
is vital... but to classify it as something it's
not, or belittle it as vandalism is not only insulting to actual
artists, it's laughable when
you're talking about a building that's falling apart and slated for
demolition anyway.

But it's ok... it seems like most people want to see the Asbury
waterfront become either a
gentrified shopping mall or an over-glorified retirement community.
So really, who cares
 about art anyway?
