I too like DJ and wish him success. Consider my comments as gentle noodging.

My take on the financial pressure being felt by print media is that those
readers who used to buy a paper for want-ads, classifieds, tv schedules,
lottery numbers, sports scores, et al. have gone to more immediate sources or
lists
like Craig's which are free. I'm guessing that a huge chunk of that
readership weren't really print news consumers.

I'm also guessing that there is a narrower audience out there which is still
interested in news and analysis by professional journalists both in print
and online. I'm willing to pay for both.

I've received a few emails from people asking me why those on this

Good neighbors usually revel in one another's success.

Another theme was that the detractors on this board seem to be outside

That of course came as no surprise.

2009-01-03 Thread oakdorf
...my friend is a big shot a large print advertising company. They
merged with another co a few months ago. They do inserts layouts
distribution etc.

The pain they have begun to feel - Boscovs, Circuit City etc etc - no
more stores - no more ads once or twice a week.

We then got into an 8 hour conversation about transformation to the
web - a problem their co is facing.

Why even have a web presence at all or accept ads via email or
advertise ad rates - on the web? Why not use regular mail or the
tele? So the web/net does have a publication.

Flip it around - there are many, many large and small Internet
publications or blogs that are or were very successful - profitable.

Without the net RentLaw.com would not be around in paper form. And it
wouldn't of been picked up those paper book publishers referring to
it or newspapers writing about it.

EVERY co should have some kind of web presence. TCN does. Imagine
those archives on the net

PS - a couple people joined the Asbury Park GROUP on linkedin.com

Go to linkedin.com and search for the group ASbury Park and join.

We'll have real who's who in and thinking of Asbury.

[AsburyPark] Ads...papers etc...

2009-01-03 Thread oakdorf
I had(ve) an ad on the Internet.
Basically cost me nothing. I think I got a little deal from it today.

My boss is old. He believes in signs, signs, signs.
Look, there's our sign SEE he always says.

Signs, print, net, email blast, newletters - all ads. Up to the
advertiser to determine what works best for them. Might be the TCN,
might be the NYT, might be co-op ads, the Internet or the worst - I
don't need to advertise...

And of course the net is great for PR, controversy etc. Controversy
sells more product. My cousin married some well know photographer.
People in her world and some out know of her. She then took
some shocking photos. Someone complained. He took that complaining
and complained more - then all the media ran with it. More fame, more
success then before the controvery... as reported on the web.

Depends how you look at it.

1. The ad appeared on my website, asburyboardwalk.com. How do I know? I
ask how'd you get my number.
2. Did other realtors ask to advertise on asburyboardwalk.com?
a) Yes. Do I show ads for other realtors? No. I did quote a price, but
that's ok.

I have another rather large website - national. All from my laptop.
It's profitable. Why? My reach is national. Every state and I can
disect those states easily - Google or Yahoo or other services target
mysite (and their advertisers) and in target,a re getting much better
at targeting local internet users. Still flaws in the system, but it
works. It works for the advertiser, for the publisher (me) and for the
adserving company (example, google).

You can pay rent and serve the local community who may or may not have
money, or use the Internet, pay a little rent, and be anywhere you want
to be - and anyone you want to be.

The TCN is neat for it's market. Look, we all know what's in it every
week or we couldn't comment. But Tommy has to embrace the web, or we
woudln't see the justifiedright.com blog nor him on FOX, via the web.
From a local guy toan Internet cult hero...
