[AsburyPark] Extra police activity??

2012-09-29 Thread Claire Davids
Anyone know why there is so much police activity at the moment? I know
there's been some shootings lately but it feels like there are cops walking
everywhere, last night at football practice (bangs ave on the west side of
tracks) there were 10 or 12 cops waking around and today and yesterday on
the east side we have walking and driving up and down 7th.

I think something is going on or about to go on.

Re: [AsburyPark] How others see Asbury Park....

2012-09-04 Thread Claire Davids
The bishops bleed blue and black, it's team spirit i guess.

We can't take away from the fact that these kids get a crappy education and
crappy school management, the one thing they do well is football. You
could have taken that money and thrown it into the school but it would have
just been misappropriated anyway and none of the kids would have benefited.
At least this way the handful that work hard for something (even if it's
sport) benefit. If they're required to go to school and keep up their
grades to play maybe it will encourage others.

Hi

It's so funny - i was just thinking this morning when the email came
through. Hope you guys had a great vacation, can't believe the summer
is now over and reality sets in.

Asbury Park Pop Warner

Not sure if you know colleseum gym (Carmelo) but he donated too which was
really nice.

We're 2 games into the season and i cannot tell you a great job the coaches
do, this is first year of tiny mites (5,6,7 age group) and the coaches are
great and the kids love it, there's 30+ kids enrolled. I can't believe
that most of these guys do this and just donate their time without kids on
the team for the love of the game and community spirit.

Anyway, thanks for the remind and the donation, it's really appreciated.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Crappy experience at Rafferty's

2012-06-12 Thread Claire Davids
I will say about McCloones in AP - we went on memorial day at about 8pm for
dinner and service was so slow, i mean ridiculous, we had 2 kids with and
we waited for 90 minutes for our entrees, and when . However. the
server and manager could not have been nicer, they came to us and
apologized profusely and they came to us before we complained, they comped
us a round of drinks, they gave us a free membership card (which you
normally have to pay for) and they we all over the problem. They
recognized us a regulars (which doens't happen much in AP and did the
right thing)

Generally the service there is pretty amateur but not as awful as some
other places, the menu is ok and the staff are friendly.

Yep. The New Brunswick Raff's is very good. That was my palce when I
 worked in Piscataway.

We had a group of people 2 weeks ago at Raff's - yes, some of the orders
were screwed up and slow and the food is generally ok.

that being said, we often go there later at night on a friday if my wife
is heading home late - the best tomato soup (just remind them with a bowl
you the gnocchi) great bartender - drink each and head home - all within my
 budget.

As far as langosta not letting you sit for a drink when tables are empty
 - we had the same experience during the week at McCloones - but in Long
Branch. Almost all tables empty - and we ordered two drinks and an
appetizer as a warmup - then a manager came over and offered for us to sit
inside as he handed us menus to order dinner...

So I cancelled the appetizer sipped my drink for another hour and left.
My appetizer orders and drinks usually add up more then a couple ordering
just dinner -no drinks, no coffee etc.

My daughter said the Mccloones in AP is now much better - but I haven't
 taken a shot.

Nothing worse then getting a waiter/waitress pissed because you don't
 order dinner.

I don't mind going to Wegmans's, getting a greek salad for the increased
price of $6.50 driving down to the beach, parking my car eating it and
going back to work. No tip, no attitude and it's consistent.

Kids wanted to take me out the other night for a b-day - said screw it.
I went to shop-rite got the filet on sale, stopped at weg's got myself a
cake and some veggies and had my kids and their friends help prep it all -

  a) 100 times better b) cheaper c) more fun

Hint: Carrots cost pennies, no need to cut it in half, then quarters
then put 2 pieces on a plate with 2 fingerling potatoes and call it with
 vegetables

  2 olives, 2 pieces of cheese, 2 crackers and 4 grapes ain't worth $14
 plus a tip

  Don't microwave bread.

  Leftovers aren't fresh.

Know what fish are in season and are really local. I'm not in florida .
Local doesn't mean the local supplier, it means local water.

If you can't be in your restaurant and watch the kitchen yourself or
understand a complaint and know how to suck it up, then you shouldn't be in
 business.

And for gods sake, you're not going to go broke by making a good cup of
coffee. If you can't make it right, go for a keruig or nespresso.

Re: [AsburyPark] Crappy experience at Rafferty's

2012-06-11 Thread Claire Davids
It's amateur service and people not caring about their locals

Let's add Langosta to crappy experience.

Went there Sunday, dropped the kids at the sprayground and wanted to have
some drinks outside and keep an on the kids. They wouldn't let us sit down
unless we were ordering food. There were 6 or 7 empty tables out there,
they remained empty the whole time we sat on the bench across the way.
Greeter was cluess and didn't care.

Another Asbury restaurant forgetting the locals who actually go to them
year round.

probably wouldn't have happened if she had bothered to write it down.

Despite being empty, the service was slw. Rule #1 when there are
little kids, move things along efficiently. Then there were little things
like my wife's soup not coming out until 10 minutes after the salads came
out, and the table being given a basket of bread with only 4 pieces for 8
 people.

I've eaten there before and it has been fine, but this time really turned
me off to the place. I think I'll stick with the brick wall.

Re: [AsburyPark] Day one...

2012-05-19 Thread Claire Davids
The thing about the price gouging is the convention center shops do it
always. It's always $50 for a hoody on there (Asbury park/Tilley type
tops) so if that's what the concert tops are it doesn't seem so bad.

We are on grand and 7th, I thought it would be mad here but it was very
organized.

All in all I think yesterday was a success. But.. Let's see what today
brings, I suspect it will be a little/lot worse.

So same could be said for the concert vendors. It's not gouging, it's all
the fees, setups and 'stuff' that drives up the pricing.

I don't have a problem with the convention center vendor pricing, I
support as much as possible. I was making a comparison. I guess it's
just unfortunate that MM gouge on rents.

Didn't knock myself out bidding. And your taxes will continue to rise. You
will eventually be picking up more and more of the school taxes. Good thing
they didn't piss another 45000 on a blue field. At some point enough is

I've had three offers in on houses in AP the past year. Out I'd each time

Its about time property taxes are levels out on two factors..
Square footage and lot size and a factor of market value.
Not your house is pretty or you have an extra bathroom or pretty
 shutters.
All one has to do is look around AP. AP has a wide fluctuation for
similar properties. Tax appeals now are available through monmouth county
 web site.
If you think you are paying to much look at your tax bill. You'll need
some recent sales to make your case.

I should reword - probably to possibly - i have no idea of their position
and don't mean to speculate about it. But it seems to me as a business
person that you don't just close your doors overnite, it's a long time
coming perhaps you couple that with the fact that it's winter so there are
less of us here, and this is the slowest time for the fitness world (pre
holidays, after the beach) anyway etc etc. Could the parking contribute to
that, sure, but i'm sure it could not be the only reason for a business
closing their doors, we shoudn't blow it out of proportion.

Take the conversation further with the Americas Cup owner though, my husband
and i spoke to him last saturday for a while about parking and at that
point he was very happy with the paid parking, even if business is down he
sees it as a huge benefit in the long term, plus you can't gauge business
being down, there are now 3 coffee shops downtown (if you include the gelato
place), maybe that's why business is down, we don't drink enough coffee to
support 3 coffee shops. maybe now there's parking people will come from
neighbouring towns for coffee. there are way too many variables at play to
blame it one just one thing.

2011-10-28 Thread Claire Davids
We have to compare it to other towns though, if you lived and worked in
Hoboken, Jersey City, Manhattan in the downtown areas you would have to pay
for parking (when we lived in NY we paid nearly $000s/month for parking for
a car and motorbike), it's a lifestyle choice we had to accept. Living in
AP and working in AP is no different to that, much cheaper, but you would
expect it to be much cheaper as it's the suburbs. It's tough to impose
costs on people who have not paid them until now, and I understand that is
not pleasant to increase your cost of living and I truly feel for those
impacted, but perhaps we've not been in a reality until now.

It's not dissimilar to gas pricing, when gas was $1.50/gallon it was not a
reality, the rest of the world was paying $5 to $10 / gallon if not an oil
producing nation. So when it raised to $3 / $4 here it put the country in a
real situation as opposed to a deflated one. I don't mean to bring this up
to raise a debate on gas prices here or cause some political debate, i'm
just using it as a comparison about living in reality.

happy about it. The city has basically said screw you to employees and
residents. Same thing that happened in my neighborhood.
I think the America's Cup guy is reluctant to admit that his own push for
paid parking has had a detrimental effect on his business.
I work on Bond Street. Every employee at my company refused to buy a
parking pass. In this economy, adding what amounts to another tax on your
income simply isn't a good idea. Not only that, but I believe that if you
buy the employee parking pass, you still have to park blocks away from where
you work. Correct me if I'm wrong about that one. Then, if you get somebody
like me, who now has to pay to park in front of his home and works downtown,
you are screwed. How is this helping residents and employees?

I'm a weekday shopper - right now if i'm working from home and want to run
out to grab a coffee i do a flyby on cookman, see if there's anywhere to
park and if not head on to panera or somethign where parking is guaranteed.
I know now that i'm sure to have parking now downtown and frankly if i'm
running into a coffee shop to grab and go i won't bother paying to park (and
i'm sure that others will be the same), that is a huge positive for the
coffee shops and deli and grab and go places. If i need a change of
scenery and want to grab my laptop to work somewhere else, same thing, i do
a flyby, parking, yay, i'll go to cookman, no parking and panera here i
come. Now there will be parking, i will pay if it's a stop and i'll spend
more money down time as i wander and now buy 2 cups of coffee, maybe a snack
etc.

Same thing with lunch, quick stops at local shops, hell, i'll even join club
a now as I can park for sure and not worry about missing class as i'm
driving around looking for parking. I will happily pay for all those
things.

I'm sure i'm not unique in this philosophy, so the pure nature of freeing up
spaces will drive more business for the merchants and that's what we want,
give them a chance to survive in the off months and thrive in the on months.

From a safety concern, in the UK you can pay your meter parking by text
message or by calling a number and using an automated answering system -
maybe something like that would be a good idea here. Then there'd be no
fumbling around at midnite trying to pay the meter. Or maybe the
bars/restaurants should have the meters insite or right outside in the lit
areas so there's no deserted dark roads that we have to worry about.

You have to define what a weekday shopper is.

What would draw one to to shop AP - is it selection, price, the scene,

that comes down to is it a weekday destination shopping trip? Or are those
people more likely to go to the mall on a rainy day or The Grove in
 Shrewsbury.

You want daytime life on cookman? Then like it or not, you need a major co
(or groups of little ones) who have employees with disposable incomes and or
a major shopping destination - like a Marshalls where people just walk in
and buy tons of useless items. We had this discussion before.

What you have now is the funkiness that you want so cater to the night
business of music and restaurants ( that means be open when people ARE
there). You can't be closed when people are there and open when they aren't

It could be good for business for other reasons too. For example, i never
shop at Lush because there's no parking and the nature of what i'm buying is
heavy. I don't mind paying a dollar to park and for sure if there's
parking i would always shop there and support the local businesses.

Same with most of the stores downtown - i would even buy the permit if i

Cookman midweek is tough. If the spaces were filled with residents and
employees then nothing lost. Parking was definitely a problem on weekends.
If someone has a problem spending $1 to park then you don't need them as a
customer. (BTW, you can buy 1 minutes, or 30 minutes). That'll be the same
cheapskate that buys a cup of coffee and sits there for 2 hours. Parking is
NEVER free. It always has a cost.

BTW Hinge, did they suspend parking on your block? I saw your VW in a
numbered spot in front of your house the other day, or did you buy ht
 parking pass?

Pre-conversion I had a looked at a couple. The city back then was to
quick and desperate and let these happen. So a place like yours that was
paying maybe 10k in taxes as a 5 family rental (or more or less) all of a

Many of the apartment to condo conversions looked great as well. They
are as a second home, weekend home etc. Those that bought to flip got
screwed as were those that were duped thinking that the rent always covers
the mortgage . Maybe someone bought as a second home or yr round home only

North beach didn't do a blow-out sale either. If I'm right, Amboy Bank
was/is the mortgage holder and they had a clever set-up to hold their own

either sold for proft or hold and manage and rent the properties.

And yes, the value of your condo - is based on the supply on demand.
Some people want to be in downtown, some in a conversion, some in a

 minimal taxes for now.

My fiance had 4 guys taken in the other day. They parked a car at the
corner of my street (in front of my house), the 4 guys (not kids) got out,
placed the hoods on their sweatshirts up on their heads and began walking to
the HS. When she saw this, she called the police, as it was 1pm on a
 Thursday

They were from Neptune and looking for 2kids from AP. Car was towed the
 next day.

Moral is, call the police if it looks suspicious

Has anybody noticed the new gang tags that have been appearing around the
city recently? At Library Square Park, somebody spray painted MDP at each
of the trash containers at the 4 corners of the park.

What is MDP? MDP is short for Murder Dem Pussies

This same tag is spreading fast. There's a new Latin restaurant on Bond
street that opened about a week ago, and somebody tagged it in the past few
 days.

This is not good news, because it signifies a subset of a gang staking
 out territory.

If you observe anybody doing this, call the PD immediately.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Reflections on Parking

2011-09-20 Thread Claire Davids
Issue with resident only parking on public streets is some of the weekend
folks. If you take a look on cookman at some of the cars parked, they have
flyers on them and some of those flyers are a week old, what that means to
me is weekend residents are parking in public streets for days when they're
back in their monday to friday residences. That means those of us who want
to go to cookman and park suffer as there's no parking and the stores suffer
as we may well go elsewhere. Resident only parking would perpetuate that.
If you live in a place with attractions (beach/shopping) it's price to
pay.

That holds promise but I think residents should have to pay in the
beachfront, cookman, etc. Parking is never free (always has a cost) even if
its not charged for. Hogging spaces so customers can never park and frequent
businesses. But even implementing some sort of resident parking has issues.
Do you make it like Hoboken where there is a visitor parking for limited
time? You have to pay someone to mark the tires and measure time?

same complaints, so we do the same there, and so forth and so on.

It is only going to get wore unless the whole thing fails. 1.5 cars off

I would have bought the permit if the city designated a number of

Wouldn't it make sense for the city to have done a parking survey
first? Find out how many residents park in the designated area, and reserve
spaces for residents in those areas. On my block this summer that would have
amounted to 3 spaces. I realize that varies from block to block, but as I've
said, the current system is great for the city, but useless for residents
such as myself. What's the value in paying to park when you can't find a

24 days when visitors took up all the spaces?

deepened
overnight as evidenced by a drop in central pressure (943mb) however
this
deepening has translated into a more expansive wind field rather than

She is big.She is mean. She is Hurricane Irene.and like it or
 not, she's coming our way.
At 8:00 am, Hurricane Irene was making her way through the northwest
Bahamas with highest winds of 115 mph. Irene has been going through an ERC
(eye replacement cycle) which has prevented additional strengthening, but
 that
process is nearly complete and the hurricane will likely gain strength
 today and tonight.
Forecast guidance has shifted the forecast track of Irene decidedly to the
west. The track spray of the models are now all very close to the NJ
shore. A couple have a landfall in Ocean City, MD and then northward along
the Delaware River, a few more are right over the Jersey Shore and a few
 others are just offshore.
The National Hurricane Center has issued a Hurricane Watch for the North
Carolina coastadditional watches are likely further north today,
tonight and tomorrow. The earliest time for a Hurricane Watch in New Jersey
 is
 late tonight or tomorrow morning.
We are still 2 1/2 days away from impact, but given the trends of the
forecast guidance, our area should prepare for, and expect, hurricane
conditions on Saturday night and Sunday with the possibility of a direct
 landfall
on New Jersey, which has not occurred since 1903.
Assuming that Irene reaches Category 4 status later today, strikes eastern
North Carolina on Saturday afternoon as a Category 3 storm and then
tracks over or just east of our area as a Category 1 storm, wind gusts of
 80mph
are possible Sunday morning with perhaps 90 mph south of Atlantic City.

Curious, how do you know it was gang members you saw swimming? Is that a
fact or stereotyping?

Yeah, they really have so much on their plate right now. What do you think
is behind this serious increase in shootings lately?

Also, Library Square Park is once again becoming a bit of a nightmare.
Yesterday I had to yell at a drunken street person who was pissing in the
bushes at the center, at noon while kids were playing a a short distance
away. And another street person has been shitting near the center for a few
weeks now. The smell is nauseating. The fountain has become a trash can. The
3 globes were destroyed weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the drunk crack head lady from the Del Monte is getting worse
and worse. She shakes down people night and day for money and she smells
like shit. Yesterday, she started yelling at me when i warned her to get out
of the street or I'd call the PD. And we all call the PD, but considering
how much they are dealing with it's almost a waste of time because nothing
ever changes. She is a nightmare in our neighborhood.

Re: [AsburyPark] On social issues...

2011-06-29 Thread Claire Davids
It would be really great if to get involved and help out with some of the
social issues here on a volunteer basis, but it's not easy to do. My
husband and I signed up for a program with the high school to mentor kids
who might actually make it to college (the 2 % or whatever the shockingly
low number is), the theory being is the kids that may actually make it to
college don't have the support structure at home or motivation or the family
environment to understand the opportunities. it's run or managed by the
boys and girls club, we interviewed, completed the paperwork, did the
fingerprints / background checks and were told yup, this is great, we're so
excited, we'll be in touch and introduce you to the kids you'll mentor and
never heard back again. i kept following up and asking and same thing, was
told they'd get in touch, and nothing more. after about 4 months we gave
up, talk about a system failing.

 the table

Called DIFS that day, they came out, toddler is still living in the house,
so I don't know what they found, or didn't find

The problem I find most disturbing, is how these parents act towards you
when you try and do something nice or help them. Typically its getting the
kids out of the street and onto a sidewalk because the parent is not paying
attention. My favorite is when they tell me to stop telling them how to
raise their kids just after I get said kid out of the street while they
 ride their little tricycle.

There are several problems with the parents, but I personally feel the 3
main ingredients for the social disaster we have is

 #1 - kids raising kids(most parents I see can't be older than 19yrs old)
 #2 - absentee fathers
#3 - poor living conditions (ie Boston Way)

Just my opinion, and as of right now I can not offer any solutions except
what to do with Boston Way

Re: [AsburyPark] 1st Summer stage show and parking in front of my home.

2011-05-15 Thread Claire Davids
Perhaps some rezoning of the parking areas? We live on 7th and paid parking
is only in effect on the first block (where the northbeach is) it's not been
done on 100 blocks and up. I walked past there at 8pm there was tons of
parking still available around the berkely, paramount and northbeach.
Seems a little unfair that if you live on 200 block in some areas you have
paid parking and not in others when not all the paid parking is used all the
time anyway (allthough as the season goes on it does get more full up down
by the berkeley too. i really don't want to attract puke and rubbish onto
my street but it does seem a little uneven.

What could have been done better? Easy, make the residential portions of

would be willing to reimburse me for cleaning up the puke on my lawn due to
 their crappy plan?

Doesn't free employee parking give people an incentive to drive to work
rather than take public transport or walk/ride bike?. Employers don't give
bus fare or train fare so why give free parking? In today's quest for
being more green discouraging use of cars, encouraging car pooling or use
of public transport is a good idea.

Note - i'm being an idealist, i drive everywhere in a gas guzzler so i'm a
hypocrite, but seems we're missing the big picture.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Disgraceful

2011-03-19 Thread Claire Davids
As a parent is Asbury this is close to my heart. It is shocking. I cannot
send my son to school here (and believe me i really want to as i think he
should be part of the community), but his education and safety are more
important. So i pay astronomical taxes (and i mean astronomical) and i pay
private school fees. In fact, i now spend as much money in the combined
schools fees and taxes as a friend of mine who lives in Larchmont NY
(westchester county, which are the highest taxes in the NY area). I love
AP, love living here and i keep saying, perhaps by the time my son reaches
highschool age it will be better, but who am i kidding. Perhaps i should
have moved to Wannamassa so i could still access AP easily but at least had
a better school option. I'm sure that's what other families are thinking.

school system is such a mess it makes the powdered and made up boardwalk and
downtown seem like real deals. The only time the community rallies around
the kids of Asbury Park is when there is some kind of athletic success.
Protests , marches, parent demonstrations over sports, but have there been
any such actions over the education of the same kids? Huge salaries to
administrators to NOT come to work. Athletic Directors ripping off the kids
but again all that matters is if the kids are winning games. Owning property
in Asbury Park costs a fortune in property taxes, and young couples who are
looking for a great place to live can't or won't choose Asbury Park because
the school system flat out sucks.
Come to Asbury Park and it's so easy to celebrate the musical legacy, a
true musical legacy on a par with the likes of Memphis. But what of the
legacy of Asbury Park High School. Other than slight mentions of Frank Budd
every now then, how many know of the brilliant athletic legacy of Asbury
Park? The generations that built that legacy are aging and passing on, all
but forgotten, I understand the trophies and banners they won competing
against the great high schools of North Jersey are long missing from the
halls of one of the most beautiful high schools in the state.
You want to really restore Asbury Park to it's former glory, make it a
great place for families to raise their children, start at Kindergarten and
don't stop until the graduating classes of APHS are known for more than a
conference championship or two. Build the system from ground up and throw
the corrupt and self serving crooks out of the school system. Make the
entire Asbury Park school system, not just a team or two, worthy of
celebration. And stop dissing the hard working volunteers who give their
heart and souls to fixing a completely broken system that has been so
mis-managed it could cause the closing of the once mighty APHS.
