 Gary,

you're right, the new font does look great. I've taken the liberty
of
redesigning the inside of the paper as well as the cover. Maybe you
should hire me so I can make your paper look better. First of all if
someone sends in a letter that sucks or if we don't have the space
or
if it comes in late, we're not going to print it. We do have
deadlines
Gary, just one of our many standards. But aside from that...

Your numbers really don't mean anything. You still never seem to get
bigger than 26 pages. And yes we do have our audience, a very big
one
at that. Lets not forget that we don't just cover Asbury. I don't
know
anyone who reads Upstage other than to flip through it and throw it
in
the garbage. Eddie Murphy is Back (from you recent issue)? Are you
serious? What does he have to do with anything in this area - you
put
him on the cover no less. And you have the nerve to make comments
about the triCityNews? Plus you print syndicated articles from Kam
Williams that 100 other papers print. Very original Gary I must
say.

Hey I'm not trying to be an asshole but you're the guy always making
comments on this board about triCity so I'm gonna fire back at ya.
The triCityNews. Does it really matter? Remember that one Gary.

And fortunately for us we don't have a sales department because we
don't need one. Why? Because all of the advertising comes to us.
Interesting. We must not be very well read. Or, get this Gary, we
must
actually be doing something right. Lets not forget that Dan is one
very smart guy as well as myself and editor Steven Froias. We know
what we're doing. As for Tommy, I can't stand the crap he writes as
much as the next guy. Hey Tommy, hope you're reading this. Update
that
 justifiedright.com website for Christ's Sake.

Bottomline, we are here to help Gary, just ask every business we've
ever profiled. Ask them how well they did as a result of our
coverage
of them. Go ask Gary (a different Gary) down at Sister Sue's how
well
the triCityNews has helped his business. Have you been there yet? If
 not go and support him.

And go ask the countless other businesses, artists, musicians,
nonprofits, etc. how much we've helped. Go ask Ross at America's Cup
how he got interested in Asbury and what inspired him to open his
shop
on Cookman. He'd tell you it was the triCityNews and what he read in
the paper that got him interested. He used to call us once a month
about 2 years before he opened to get our opinions on if he should
open a coffee shop downtown. Our answer was of course yes. I could
tell you a thousand other stories just like that one. So yes Gary,
 we're here to help.

If you've got something to say, email us. Don't worry, we won't
print
it because I'm sure it won't be very interesting.

  Jason,

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not jealous of Tri-
City
at all. The fact is that people have told me they put Dan's
mantra
of printing every letter to the test and their letters didn't
get
printed. As Tommy will attest, I really haven't read your paper
in
years. I picked up the copy the other day at the Saint because
the
Saint was on the cover. I really think the new font looks great.

As for jealous... I am envious of newspapers who have sales
people
although we recently added a sales department with our merger.
Our
paper is going to 15,000 copies in March with a brand new
upgraded
look and we'll be at 25,000 copies per month in July.
Considering we
had over 150,000 visitors to our website last month and the
numbers
continue to grow, I'd say we're in a pretty good position.

  Jealous? I doubt it.

I think Tri City has its audience and we have ours. It's funny
because we're an arts paper but the audiences are largely
different.
Asbury is just one place we distribute though and that's why we
don't
consider Tri City as a competitor.

Hope this clears things up a bit. After all, we're Upstage
Magazine... we're here to help (lol)

No, I just think it sucks. The writing is bad, and although I like

Besides, I recall when he let my buddy go off on me two years ago. I
won;t rehash it, but needless to say, it was not the truth. DJ
personally did the same thing with Keady. Then all his bs about
cool/kool and suburbia. Wake the guy up - he's lived in nothing but
subirbia his whole life.

This area sorely needs an independent news source that reports the
facts. I would say that Asbury Radio does that, but it will be lost

Jason I'm going to respectfully ask you to not take part in this
discussion of TCN anymore.

We get to say what we want, to thousands of people, each week.
These folks here don't have that privilege, and I consider it an
honor to hold that privilege. We find ourselves in the unique
postion of trying to guarantee a platform in the paper to even those
who disagree with us.

If we are going to come here to defend TCN, we can only end up
looking like bullies. That's why I never respond to a letter writer
in the paper - I think the least I should do is let the public have
the last word since I get so many words.

Let them vent against the paper here. It doesn't have to be
defended here. You know how well we're doing. You know the reach of
the paper and that we get out of state mail and press releases from
every politician in the county.

Don't rub it in. Just let it go.

What you don't understand is that we're not trying to be a real
newspaper. That is the Asbury Park Press' job although they don't do
it very well.

The whole point of the triCityNews is to point out happening or dare
I say cool things across the entire Eastern Monmouth region, not just
Asbury, and connect the dots between them all. Plus push for
preserving and building great architecture and writing about the
local political scene. That's it. Yes it is only our opinions. And
while that may get annoying to some, that is what makes the paper
successful. It's different than any other news media whether you
agree or disagree with it. The paper is very well read and our
influence is felt from Point Pleasant to the Highlands whether you
believe it or not. And we do a lot of good things for a lot of good
people. For instance this week Market in the Middle was unfairly
blasted in the Press by Andrea Clurfeld. Marilyn, over at the Market,
is devastated. Well guess who's stepping up and defending her when no
other media outlet would? The triCityNews. We will be blasting
Clurfeld in this week's issue. It's these things that separate us
from everyone else. I don't have a problem with people who don't like
the paper. You can't please everyone no matter what field you're in.
Everyone has their own idea of what we should be writing. I have a
problem with people who say we don't do any good and this is
completely wrong.

Jason, I've changed my mind since you've taken Tommy's writing to task

I'll look into it. It is really DJ's and TD's that I have a problem

think its promotion of AP and its merchants are commendable, but I also
think DJ's rant regarding suburbia, is not only misplaced, but turns
off folks who might give AP a try. I know he probably doesn't care
about that, and I understand and sympathize with him about
the prejudice in suburbia against AP, but nothing is worse than an

What you suggest then is that the journalist claims to know the

Do you think Katie Couric can look at two sides of a disagreement,

I'd rather see the two sides tell their own stories on Matthews or

Journalists? Are you sure about that?
Is Steven Frois a journalist?
What about the article he wrote a few months ago lamenting the potential loss
of the
Historic Gay Cruising Zone
In my opinion, that was the most ridiculous and irresponsible article ever
written in the
TCN.
Maybe it was satire and I just didn't get the joke, but to wax poetically about
a place who's
basic purpose is for guys to go to and have annonomous sex is ridiculous.
Last time i rode my bike down the north boardwalk, I didn't happen to see the
plaque
commemorating this historic place.
I'm surprised he didn't follow up that article with a report on the Historic
Gloryhole
District

Do you think Katie Couric can look at two sides of a disagreement,
filter out the unncessary and just tell us the ultimate truth? I
 don't.

I'd rather see the two sides tell their own stories on Matthews or
O'Reilly, and I'll decide who makes the better case for the truth.

Well its a journalists job to research the facts/truth that can be
known and report it. That's why they are called reporters. As Joe
Friday was fond of saying, Just the facts Ma'am. Give me the facts
and I will reach my own conclusion. I don't need you doing it for me.

We analyze the news, just like a mulititude of other publications,
audio and video communications do.

IF you don't want to see or hear analysis, it is far more than just TCN
you are going to have to avoid.

But I think we have reached the last of the discussion. I understand
you don;t like the analysis genre. I enjoy it (often can't get enough
of it).

To each his own, compadre!

[AsburyPark] Re: Jason

2007-01-21 Thread Jason Thomson
Gary,

you're right, the new font does look great. I've taken the liberty of
redesigning the inside of the paper as well as the cover. Maybe you
should hire me so I can make your paper look better. First of all if
someone sends in a letter that sucks or if we don't have the space or
if it comes in late, we're not going to print it. We do have deadlines
Gary, just one of our many standards. But aside from that...

Your numbers really don't mean anything. You still never seem to get
bigger than 26 pages. And yes we do have our audience, a very big one
at that. Lets not forget that we don't just cover Asbury. I don't know
anyone who reads Upstage other than to flip through it and throw it in
the garbage. Eddie Murphy is Back (from you recent issue)? Are you
serious? What does he have to do with anything in this area - you put
him on the cover no less. And you have the nerve to make comments
about the triCityNews? Plus you print syndicated articles from Kam
Williams that 100 other papers print. Very original Gary I must say.

Or, get this Gary, we must
actually be doing something right. Lets not forget that Dan is one
very smart guy as well as myself and editor Steven Froias. We know
what we're doing. As for Tommy, I can't stand the crap he writes as
much as the next guy. Hey Tommy, hope you're reading this. Update that
justifiedright.com website for Christ's Sake.

Bottomline, we are here to help Gary, just ask every business we've
ever profiled. Ask them how well they did as a result of our coverage
of them. Go ask Gary (a different Gary) down at Sister Sue's how well
the triCityNews has helped his business. Have you been there yet? If
not go and support him.

And go ask the countless other businesses, artists, musicians,
nonprofits, etc. how much we've helped. Go ask Ross at America's Cup
how he got interested in Asbury and what inspired him to open his shop

Don't worry, we won't print
it because I'm sure it won't be very interesting.

 Jason,

 I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not jealous of Tri-City
at all. The fact is that people have told me they put Dan's mantra
of printing every letter to the test and their letters didn't get
printed. As Tommy will attest, I really haven't read your paper in
years. I picked up the copy the other day at the Saint because the
Saint was on the cover. I really think the new font looks great.

As for jealous... I am envious of newspapers who have sales people
although we recently added a sales department with our merger. Our
paper is going to 15,000 copies in March with a brand new upgraded
look and we'll be at 25,000 copies per month in July. Considering we
had over 150,000 visitors to our website last month and the numbers
continue to grow, I'd say we're in a pretty good position.

 Jealous? I doubt it.

I think Tri City has its audience and we have ours. It's funny
because we're an arts paper but the audiences are largely different.
Asbury is just one place we distribute though and that's why we don't
consider Tri City as a competitor.

Hope this clears things up a bit. After all, we're Upstage
Magazine... we're here to help (lol)
