[AsburyPark] Re:Library Park
Mario, I'm willing, because I have the time, to meet on a given day, place and time, to clean up, one block, one street at a time, like an improvement group, to make someone else's surroundings pleasing and sanitary. The dollar store on Main and Sewall, sells mops, brooms, buckets, etc., all for a dollar! My galley kitchen and bath, are the only 2 tiled areas, here. I even have a fake grass lawn, on the terrace! Don't laugh! Every summer I create a garden in the large containers I own, creating an oasis in the air! I had huge strawberries, tomatoes and chiles, along with wild flowers, ferns and summer plants growing like mad, over here! I am willing also to plant hardy mums and other seasonal plants, around time, with my 2 good hands and discretionary income, to create the town called perfect, because it's where we should all live! The little breakfast places around town, have the nicest people in the world, operating them, like Chat Nibble and America's Cup! It takes five minutes to scramble eggs and toast a bun, but it always tastes better, when someone else does it! At Sunset Landing, you get those crazy ducks! At Franks, you get the important people and the ordinaries, like me! I dream a world, but since it's just a dream, I try to live it, so Jack, whenever you're ready, I'll come with broom and rubber gloves to clean up! When it's time to plant, I'll provide some flowers! I don't mind a little sweat and I still have 2 good hands. I don't consider myself a do-gooder! I hate 'em! I like to just pitch in, where needed. I still own a couple of aprons, but never considered myself, domestic! When my kids were hungry, I cooked, when they were dirty, I cleaned them in places they didn't know they had! Well, they're gone now and things still need to be done, so just buzz me and tell me where I'm needed! I'm good-hearted, but not a goody, 2 shoes! Just sign me, a dreamer! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 10/24/2007 8:07:47 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Simple stuff! I've always given mine to the Salvation Army. Twice a year, I clean the closets out and good, clean, wearable garments, are accepted. You can also take a tax deduction. On the 1st Avenue side, is where you can take the clothing, shoes, appliances, knick knacks, aka dust catchers and Cha-chis, books, furniture, even canned goods, you don't want. My organization, hosts, table sales, chinese auctions, etc., and I tend to buy the new things, like candles and gift sets. Many stores that have items they couldn't sell, wind up over there! Still in their packaging, brand new! I usually have 2 shopping bags, of new items, to generate sales. The money from sales, goes toward the general fund, that pays for postage, copy paper, etc. My organization, like the Salvation Army, is non-profit, all volunteer and lobbies for veterans issues. I collect white porcelain and have found really unusual pieces, over there, CHEAP! If you want to get rid of your stuff, take it to the Salvation Army. The clothing goes to families in distress, from fires, floods and other natural disasters. I had never been in the building on Asbury Avenue, until the fire, last month. I needed to get indoors, from the heat and found refuge there. I will never forget them, for the soft chair and the cold water. I wish everyone in this group, could send them a dollar! They really provided a safe place to congregate and rest, after standing outdoors, for hours. I think of the commercial played during Christmas, with their bell and donation holder. Give a hungry man a fishing pole and not a fish. Spend 40 hours 80 miles out on a 36' boat fishing. You can keep the $1000 reel and rod and I'll take the fish. Give that fishing pole here and that person would be selling it on the corner for $5.00. Plenty of poles have been given out in AP. Time to take the time and teach them how to use it. Just another observation. If you don't live on the West Side, you'd never know, but St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, has a fedding program, ONCE a month! The last Sunday, I believe. My girl friend is a parishioner and helps with the preparation and the serving. On Fridays, if you care, people form a line and receive free food, around 9:00 AM, until ??? The first time I saw this a coule of years ago, I didn't know what was going on, until I asked someone whose business, I patronize, on the avenue, as we call it. St. Peter Claver, had a similar program, when they had the thrift store. I stopped in to donate some clothing and walked in on the giveaway. Most churches in the area, have something, going on, which is funded by the government and distributed by the churches. Sisters of Mercy, were doing the same thing on Main St. and Bradley Beach, has a location, also. The only location, I see, having a potential problem, is Trinity, where they seem to congregate outside and I didn't know that this is what they were doing. ( I had observed people congregating,) as I drive past on Emory and Asbury Aves. The church on Grand Ave., gives flu shots and food! Had a part-time job there, a few years back and found out by chance. I had no idea, that practically ALL of the churches in this area, has this giveaway. Also found out that the poor go from location to location, collecting, these freebies. Being naive as hell and not in the system, an onlooker, like me, had no clue! Just cruise past 2nd Baptist, on Atkins and Springwood, on a Friday and you'll see. I am a Senior and have no idea, what's available for seniors, as far as recreation, etc. Seems you have to be 80 and above, to join in. [AsburyPark] Re:Library Park/Senior Center/Library
I always thought a great idea would be to put the senior center next to the Library. The property to the right if you are going up the steps. I'm sure the city could get it for a good price or through eminent domain. What I would do is expand the library and connect via an enclosed passageway to the senior center. That way the two building could cross pollinate uses. The senior could go to the library, volunteer, check out books, baby sit, use computers, etc. and the library could hold seminars at the senior center in the evenings. A win win for all. The other nice thing is that the seniors could use Jacks park and keep an eye on the things. This location is within walking distance to Cookman avenue and the Boardwalk. Let's keep the seniors involved in Asbury Park. It's the right thing to do. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, 2fine4u [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am a Senior and have no idea, what's available for seniors, as far as recreation, etc. Seems you have to be 80 and above, to join in. Park update. Today, the park has been immaculately cleaned by the city. The fountain looks as good as it's gonna get. All the drug bags are gone, cigarette butts are gone, and litter is gone. This is a good starting point, and since things are so clean it will be easy to see the effects of what goes on in the evening, until the lighting is restored and improved. I'd love to see the area patrolled more. I don't think it's being patroled at all so far. Also, I'd like to see our PD start to pay attention to the many litterers that are trashing our city. Just this morning, there were 2 discarded 40 oz. beer bottles on my sidewalk. I'm really getting sick of that. Tickets need to be given out, and fines need to be imposed. I call out every single litterer I encounter. Usually, they tell me to go F myself. Now I remind them that it's a crime and I'll call the police. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Traderdube [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The Trinity Church does a good job of helping the needy, and Paul Vail goes on to say Residents should lobby the church to change it's policy. Finally update for tonight, then it's time for some couch potatoing. I noticed that the light pole near the fountain is now intermittently working. It goes on a bit, then off for awhile, and when it is on, it casts a pretty weak moonlight kind of glow on the fountain area. It's something, but it's still not enough because even at full blast you can't see much of the central park area. Only one of the original lights along the pathways is out. Anyhow, thanks for the support today. We will fix this situation and make the park better for all of us. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Traderdube traderdube@ wrote: The Trinity Church does a good job of helping the needy, and Paul Vail goes on to say Residents should lobby the church to change it's policy. A small percentage of Trinity's guests have no respect for public private property. In my view, the church has a responsibility not to allow its guests to ruin the quality of life in our neighborhood. The church should identify who these people are and direct them to the substance abuse programs they really need. Isn't this a contradiction of one of the key points to the successful mission victory? Didn't we claim that Asbury does enough already and that bringing in another homeless mission would be adverse to Asbury Park? Maybe, instead of trying to cut down the Trinity Churches charity, we step up patrols in the area and not allow misbehavior. Yahoo!
