Jack's and Oak's comments have been most reasonable. And regarding those
anti-gov people, keep in mind that, during this state of emergency for a
storm that forecast well in advance, guv chris christie and Lieutenant
Governor Kim Guadagno are MIA. The guv who has made a name for himself by
scapegoating government employees is at Disney World. The lieutenant governor
who
is supposed to be in charge when he is absent is in Mexico.

That makes me feel better I'm working from home, although I did attempt to go
in, car got stuck 30ft from my driveway, an hour of digging and 30mins of
maneuvering and its somewhat back in my driveway

Police were polite when I called to find out the ramifications of leaving the
car there (it didn't look promising at first) they also pinned blame on the
state and county for not having their roads cleared

I'm taking your question as facetious. Waiting until there is several feet

The proper process is to start sanding/salting when snowfall starts. Followed
by clearing during the storm so that accumulations on streets do not occur
leading to the stuck vehicles you mention.

Dealing with a heavy snowfall is s much art as it is science and requires
 experienced leadership to be effective.

Waiting until a storm is over and then trying to address it is clearly
 irresponsible.
Certainly there can be extenuating circumstances (available resources,
equipment/manpower), but the basic process is well known.

hinge, I think we can all vagree its stupid for people to get out in thier
cars for non-emergencies. I think there are probably few people who are out
driving to get milk for thier coffee.

It sounds like you are saying both you and the city blames abandoned cars
for a lack of plowing... but these few abandoned cars are NOT an excuese for
only having one front end loader to try and move snow AFTER the fact for the
entire city.

If there was a plan in place - a plan for snow removal that we the people
pay taxes for - they could have lessened the impact by plowing as it was
snowing, salting the roads, etc.

This is not an emergency yet. i am happy and have food at home and water and
electricity. I am however angry as hell that the city PD blows me off and
says it doesnt know when the streets will be plowed, the DPW doesnt answer
the phone and answering machine is full, and that there are no police out
there for public safety , or tow trucks to take care of abandoned cars or PD
to ticket the absentee landlords and lazy homeowners who have not yet plowed
thier sidewalks!!

Im fed up and im going out to shovel the damn street myself

 Probably not.
Instead, when the disaster hit, it's easier to bitch about it than take the

We ALL heard the warnings. Yet how many of us got our cars stuck after the

What's more important? Having milk for coffee after forgetting to get some,

While I agree with your point about taking action instead of complaining,
this is one case where the government response to an important need was
inadequate. For example, Route 35 in Ocean Township looked like a war zone,
even at 11 pm on Tuesday. At the same time, the parking lots of the Monmouth
Mall, Wegman's, and even Red Lobster were all infinitely better than the
state highway. Why are these private enterprises so much more capable of
 clearing the snow?

...and I'm a fairly liberal Democrat, but I can admit when the public

I have never seen such an incredibly non-existent snow removal plan in my life.
My street is a nightmare. My downstairs neighbor is a nurse, and it's going to
take all day to get her car out. The only plowing that occurred left 1 car wide
lane in the middle of the street, and there's 3 car widths of heavy snow
between. What a joke. Where did all the money go that AP made from parking?

Werner you hit the nail on the head

Sunday night I watched two plows trying to work together, and all they did
was move snow to the middle of the road

You could tell they didn't have the skillset or know-how

That was the last time I saw a plow

The issue is not money... recall that the City has not had any problem spending
money it does not have for the past decade.

The problem is not having the skill set to deal with this. The two most
experienced public works employees were relieved/fired/retired last month.

True.
It's amazing that the city had plenty of warning for this storm, yet as it
unfolded there was no road sanding or salting, no early plowing, nothing. Even
Main street is a nightmare.

i just got back, i walked down third to grand to cookman, back up to main
and back to third.

there is one lane down all those roads (except side streets). on main st,
everyone is walking down the middle of the rd. cars are parked / abandoned
literally in the middle of the street. at around 2nd and main there is an
abandoned taxi, looks like it was trying to make a left turn but got stuck.
NOT A SINGLE COP or FD or city personnel in sight. i peeked in the firehouse
as there was a APFD truck w/ plow outside - about 4 men were sitting having
coffee, looking out the window...

cars are not only double parked, they are IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.

my neighbor is a volunteer citizen on patrol. when he called the PD, the
dispatcher said they city had NO PLAN and no contracts in place for
plowing and that the city manger was driving around trying to come up with
a plan.

she reported that they were trying to get the side streets plowed tonite or
tomorrow morning, hopefully.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Has anyone seen a snow plow yet

2010-12-28 Thread Bob Loblaw
you know what, it isnt about walking or cars or about what everyone else is
doing.

as mentioned, i was happy to walk. i enjoy the snow. However, when i am
unemployeed my spouses' income is essential to us.

Asbury would be really fantasic if it were not for the city government. I
suppose i have been fortunate to have previously lived in towns and cities
where things ran smoothly and we didn't notice when things went as planned.

but the fact is, Asbury Park did NOT plan for this even though they had 48
hours plus notice. can you imagine if there was (god forbid) a terrorist
attack, nuclear accident or natural event such as a flood or eathquake? It's
be a free for all.

The city of AP has let me and my neighbors down over and over and I'm fed
up, this is just one more thing to add to my list.

- this fall 3 of the 7 houses on my street were broken into

- one car window broken by kids, one car window broken by the neighbors
who got into a fight (the police responded to break up the fight, noted the
property damage but did nothing to prosecute the responsible party or notify
me, the owner),

- the unreasonable traffic tickets (1. lights not on while wipers were on,
despite it not raining, got that dismissed. car parked too close to traffic
light - i was in the middle of a block and there was no light, that was
dismissed too). dad got no seatbelt while moving the car across the street
for alt parking by THE FIRE DEPT- all within last yr.

-my female neighbor who was arrested by APPD (who called her names i wont
repeat) for hitting her husband when she attempted to defend herself from
his repeated physical abuse. she was taken to monmouth county jail overnite
and prosecuted for assault becuase he had a 'fresh' mark on him when hers
were old.

 - the drug dealers next door the PD doesn't do anything about, despite eye
witness acoounts from a number of neighbors

- i will also note the obvious which doesnt need mentioning - the waterfront
redevelopment.

yea, save your this is the real world / this is AP speech. I know it. But
guess what? I have choices. I am exersizing my CHOICE of where to live and
im selling my house and moving (a decision we made months ago).

I complain about this snow plowing because I PAY TAXES. these are services i
have pre-paid for and have not recieved. just because all the jersey shore
is not being plowed DOESNT MAKE IT RIGHT.

I moved here because i wanted to help make a difference and support AP. I am
a designer, an artist, and I wanted to be surrounded by like mided folks. I
have been involved and tried to help and volunteer.

I love the people - all walks of life - except the corrupt people in office
who run this town.

I am not the first and will not be the last to leave because of this.

all well and good to walk around and be peaceful about it, but I don't keep
a ton of food in my house and I am not walking down the middle of the street
with a 17 month old on my back. Luckily, I took this week off from work
anyway because if not, there is no way my employer in NYC would be
understanding about me taking 3 or 4 days for a snow storm. People in North
Jersey where my mother lives have been driving since Monday afternoon and
she claims they also got a lot of snow. It is about planning and execution
as Werner said. The Stone Pony cancelled shows through Thursday? That is
four days for a storm. In my mind, that is unacceptable. And just because it
isn't as bad as what the miners went through- I mean how could you even
compare to something like that?- Doesn't mean we don't have a right to have
our town execute a cohesive plan to clean our streets after a snow storm.
