Re: [Astlinux-users] Enabling Astlinux/Soekris hub
Hi Philip thanks for your reply. I have a couple of further questions if that is OK. 1. I assume these changes need to be made in /rtc/rc.conf? 2. I currently have eth0 bound the external interface which plugged into the old hub; i.e. EXTIF=eth0 EXTIP=192.168.0.124 EXTGW=192.168.0.1 EXTNM=255.255.255.0 and none of the INT settings are currently being used INTIF= INTIP= INTNM=255.255.255.0 INT2IF= INT2IP= INT2NM=255.255.255.0 INT3IF= INT3IP= INT3NM=255.255.255.0 If I make the change you recommend, what should the EXT settings be set to? 3. If your suggestion allows me to plug two voip phones in (using eth0 and eth1) , and I wanted later to plug four phones in (using all four eth ports); what settings would I need to make? Many thanks for your time. regards Mart - Original Message - From: Philip A. I can't look at the patch clearly on my bb but I will take a look at it when I get back home. I JUST today tagged 0.6.5 and started building the release files. Does this patch apply to 1.4.24.1? It applies to builds from 1.4.22 onwards - which were apparently changed to make the channels more sensitive to alarms (though I have not diffed the revisions). The status of this patch is currently only ready-for-review but things are bad enough that I will take it as it is. I will review the .mk file packages structure and try to fold it in. I am running 0.6.4 in a net5501 with a TDM400p with two FXO cards. Occaisionally one of the PSTN lines (always the same one) goes unavailable, usually overnight. I have tried swapping FXO cards and TDM400 daughter board slots to no avail - the same line still goes down every now an then. The problem seems to be that ZAP/Dahdi cannot cope with some alarm state which occaisonally occurs on one of the two lines. I noticed that something very very similar had been reported at digium : http://bugs.digium.com/view.php?id=14163 with a proposed patch : wget 'http://bugs.digium.com/file_download.php?file_id=21096type=bug' -O - | patch -p0 I set up a CentOS build machine checked out and compiled up the trunk version of Astlinux for the net5501. I ran the above patch and it changed chan_dahdi.c as expected. However. If I run then 'make' it does not detect the change and recompile the file. What is accepted best practise in this environment for folding this change in to a local patched version of astlinux. It would be a shame to have to 'make clean' the entire build and start from scratch. One is to try and IPSec under the firewall, another is to use a commonly open UDP port. Does anyone know of a UDP port which is likely to be open - I can't think of one. Can anyone provide a guide to configure IPSec on Astlinux and on a Windows machine. This does not look like a quick job. Is there another way of achieving connectivity back to an Asterisk box - presumably someone else has hit this? I note that Skype is good at burrowing its way out through the firewall, invariably I end up using Skype instead of Asterisk because of this. Any ideas ? Mart Try OpenVPN or straight IAX2 on port 53 (usually used for DNS). I find it is often left open. Thanks for the hint. I have moved IAX2 over to port 53. The obvious bits were setting bindport=53 in iax.conf, changing the Astlinux firewall to allow UDP 53, and changing my router to forward UDP 53. However Zoiper was a bit of a fiddle. Changing the IAX port to 53 in the Zoiper configuration did not work - the registration failed. A Wireshark trace revealed that this configuration field only affected the source port, the destination port was still using 4569. Adding a :53 to the Server Hostname IP configuration field as well, convinced it to use 53 as the destination port. It now works OK on a local network, now to try it out on the road. Or better still create a batch file that just does it? I'm starting from a standard 0.6.2 image on a CF card with plenty of room. For example, in the instructions below, step 1 is clear (does it matter which directory I'm in to start with, though?) but step 2 presumably involves ftp or wget and finding a suitable writeable location on the CF card. 1. 'mount -o remount,rw /oldroot/cdrom' 2. Download the new files. The upgrade files would be astlinux-XXX.tar.gz. For example, if the release is 0.6.0, the files will be distributed as astlinux-0.6.0-ARCH.tar.gz. You could download these files onto a client PC or on your AstLinux device (in an area with enough free space) 3. Expand the archive: tar -xzvf astlinux-0.6.0-ARCH.tar.gz 4. cd astlinux-0.6.0-ARCH; cp * /oldroot/cdrom/os (if downloaded and decompressed on your client PC, you'll want to use a tool to scp the files to the AstLinux device. -- Open Source Business Conference (OSBC), March 24-25, 2009, San Francisco, CA -OSBC tackles the biggest issue in open source: Open Sourcing the Enterprise -Strategies to boost innovation and cut costs with open source participation -Receive a $600 discount off the registration fee with the source code: SFAD http://p.sf.net/sfu/XcvMzF8H ___ Astlinux-users mailing list Astlinux-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/astlinux-users Donations to support AstLinux are graciously accepted via PayPal to pay...@krisk.org.
Re: [Astlinux-users] Astlinux 0.6.3 Released
Hi just set up my first net5501 box with 0.6.3. What a breeze. Very straight forward indeed, in fact I had more problem getting the TDM400 to fit properly in the case that I did with any CF or Astlinux issues. One thing I would say about the case, is that the unsupported corner of the PCI card really needs stabilising. These boxes would not normally be moved around powered up, but they could be. As supplied, the PCI card can flap around slightly and could ground out the semiconductor in that corner. I fitted a plastic tower in that corner and it seems fine now. Many thanks to all who contributed to 0.6.3. Mart Darrick Hartman wrote: We are proud to release Astlinux 0.6.3. All users of AstLinux should upgrade to this release. My own experiences are somewhat limited, but I had settled on VIA in the Neoware 140 model. However because of the way the motherboard is architected there seem to be significant problems getting the PCI slot to use a different IRQ to the on board NIC. This produced horrible quality when using a TDM400 card. I have used Wyse Winterm boxes (VIA) with much more success, but in order to save space and power I am now looking to net5501. [Astlinux-users] Hardware requirements
Hi could anyone advise if the net5501-60 has sufficient resource for an Astlinux SOHO PBX, in particular, the fact that it has just 256MB RAM. Is this likely to be a problem going forward with newer versions of Asterisk/AstLinux. Should I just cut to the chase and settle on the net5501-70 boards. The envisaged configuration is likely to be 2 FXO 1 FXS on a TDM400, and probably 6-8 SIP endpoints, supporting a maximum of say four concurrent calls. Any observations from real deployments would be of interest. [Astlinux-users] TDM400 Quality
Hi I have been using a TDM400 with 2 FXO cards for over a year but am disappointed in the quality. I mainly use the Astlinux box to join a number of SIP phones, but wanted to avoid having another two phones (POTS ones) on the desk for each of the two PSTN lines I have, when I can route it all through one of my SIP phones. This part works fine of course, but I would be interested in any best practice guidance on configuring FXO channels with a view to improve sound quality. Despite trying to tweak RX/TX gains the sound is quiet and noisy. The Asterisk box is sited right next to the PSTN master sockets so noise induced in long cables is not a factor. I know that the SIP phone to the Astlinux is good quality and I know the PSTN line is good quality. The problem it would seem is the TDM400 processing. If anyone has any sample zapata.conf files which work well in the UK or any other suggestion I would be grateful. Re: [Astlinux-users] Extending the life of flash
Michael, many thanks for your sharing your experiences. Interesting stuff. Mart Michael Graves wrote: After watching this a while I feel that I must weigh in based on my own experience. I've taken an embedded system approach to my Asterisk installation from a time when this was not at all commonplace. My earliest embedded systems were early in 2004. AFAIK Astlinux was the very first distro to be carefully tuned for booting and running from flash media. In a small office environment I can say with certainty that my very first system would still be running today if I didn't take it down. And THAT was running using a small, cheap Dane-Elec CF card recycled from an old digital camera. Once that system was down I wrote a script to drive that CF card into failure, just to see what it would take. I been using the old (0.43) Astlinux release and a CF card with three partitions since that reelase came out with no problems at all. Clearly, I'm not running a call center. But I do work from home full-time. The system handled all my work and home calls until very recently. Much effort went into Astlinux to ensure that flash wearing was addressed. All of my experience points to this being a theoretical problem more than a practical problem. Until someone can point to systems actually failing I think that the developers are not only to be believed, but commended. In reviewing the Jazinga Asterisk appliance recently I was pondering their used of an Intel SSD over a cheaper flash module. Then when their CTO was later on a Voip Users Conference call and they got to speaking with Darrick it became clear that Astlinux likely has a better architecture for dealing with flash memory that their product. They were interested in learning about the dev enironment and various techniques employed in Astlinux. Truly, Astlinux is in a leadership position WRT embedded Asterisk on small format hardware. In terms of what you can and cannot move will vary based on what you install.apps on your base image. You can use things like iostat to verify the amounts of writes that have been done to various mounts. Most things like logs can be moved without worry to a memory disk. (although keep in mind you will loose them on power cycle) A good methodology for taking care of the writes is to create a memory disk ie (/tempdisk) and symlink any directory/files back to it which are written on a regular basis (such as logs) or temporary files. You have to watch out though that your memory disk is properly sized for your system or you could run into errors when its full. A good way to deal with growing log files is something like clogd which lets you do circular log files with a specified max size. That's the point I was trying to make. The actual 'life' of a CF card or any other storage device is dependent on several use (user) factors. With the steps we've taken, there are minimal writes by default to the CF. AstLinux is intended to be a tool that you can use however you want to (within reason). Assuming you use a large enough disk, even if you did have problems where portions of the disk were no longer writable, the only affect should be the amount of free space on the device. The amount of data that's written to the CF is fairly small. If you're super paranoid, use a 4GB card and swap it out proactively in a few years. If you consider this as being commercially viable then we are looking at different business models. [Astlinux-users] Extending the life of flash
Since upgrading to 0.6.2, partitioning my flash disk and running genunion I am now not only able to make ordinary configuration changes sticky but the root password too. The trouble is however that if your mobo only supports a single hard disk channel, having multiple partitions does not really help. If the rw partition wears out it might as well all be on the same partition anyway, as the whole flash module will need changing. I understand the philosophy often cited in this forum that in reality, the real lifetime of flash under astlinux could be a very long time, and you could even take the precaution of swapping flash modules every year or so. I think this is a point well made if you are the person maintaining the system, e.g. you are running your own pbx or are a hobbyist. However this strategy does not fit well imv once you try and work it into commercial scenarios and business models. If I had (say) hundreds of Astlinux boxes in the field, having to send someone out to each site once every year is certainly not going to be cost effective. Neither is the continual disruption and risk of downtime to the client desirable. I think trying to pass the burden of this maintenance on at time of sale to the buyer would also make for an unattractive option. I do not have a definitive list of all that is stored on the rw flash module, but I understand that CDRs and Voicemail are possibly amongst the noisiest. Wouldn't a better option be to try and store these in RAM and if necessary support the unit with a UPS ? Your thoughts please. Re: [Astlinux-users] Extending the life of flash
Absolutely. Note that for some deployment models, this may be a justifiable compromise. It means that you don't have to worry about flash life, and it may also be possible to conceive of a situation where the client is responsible for configuring the backup parameters on the Astlinux box, as well as providing the target storage medium. Mart da...@kerr.net wrote: Saving CDR and voicemail in RAM would only work if there was also some persistent backup in real time, to USB or network share. Darrick thank you for your reply. My hardware is a TDM400P with 2 * FXO and 1 * FXS daughter boards It has been working fine for the last year. The problems have only come about (coincidentally) since going to 0.6.2, and more significantly since the temperature has dropped. This particular box is fitted in a room with no environmental control and temperatures have been down around zero degrees C lately. I do wonder if this is related. Last night was around +9 and there was no crash. The other speculative possibility is that the telecom company could be running overnight line tests which would explain why this only happens at night. The configuration is as follows (largely unchanged for a year as I said): Zaptel.conf : fxoks=1 fxsks=3 fxsks=4 loadzone=uk defaultzone=uk Zapata.conf : ; Zapata telephony interface ; ; Configuration file [trunkgroups] [channels] hanguponpolarityswitch=yes cidsignalling=v23 ; Added for UK CLI detection cidstart=polarity ; Added for UK CLI detection ukcallerid = yes ; Added for UK CLI detection sendcalleridafter=2 ; Added for UK CLI detection immediate=no context=default usecallerid=yes hidecallerid=no callwaiting=no usecallingpres=yes callwaitingcallerid=yes threewaycalling=yes transfer=yes cancallforward=yes callreturn=yes echocancel=yes echocancelwhenbridged=yes rxgain=4.0 txgain=1.0 group=1 signalling=fxo_ks callgroup=1 pickupgroup=1 immediate=no context=internaloutgoing busydetect=yes callerid=POTS 4000 4000 signalling=fxo_ks channel = 1 group=3 rxgain=5.0 txgain=5.0 callerid=PSTN ONE PSTN1 signalling=fxs_ks context=incoming-PSTN1 mailbox=778 channel=3 group=4 rxgain=5.0 txgain=5.0 callerid=PSTN TWO PSTN2 signalling=fxs_ks context=incoming-PSTN2 mailbox=779 channel=4 from rc.conf : ZAPMODS=wctdm Thanks regards Mart What zaptel hardware are you using? What is ZAPMODS set to in your rc.conf file? (cat /etc/rc.conf |grep ZAP). Can you paste a copy of your zapata.conf and zaptel.conf files? I have a half-dozen or more systems running 0.6.2 with zaptel hardware and have had no problems. The hardware ranges from the original TDM400p hardware to the new 8 port digium card and the 8 port Rhino cards so I have a wide range of Zaptel hardware covered (and it's all working). Re: [Astlinux-users] Asterisk exiting
Michael, thanks for your reply. I will bear this in mind. Mart Hi Martin, I had a similar problem with my Soekris net4801 and a 1-port HFC ISDB card. The box was crashing every few days or sometimes just Asterisk was silently crashing. Because I still had warrenty for it, I sent the box to my distributor are they tested the box for a week. The problem was the power supply. Without the PCI card all worked well, but with the card it crashed again. So I bought a bigger power supply and now it works. Maybe in conjuction with your low temperature this could also be the problem - who knows. Re: [Astlinux-users] Securing Astlinux 0.6.1
If you allow calls to your default context to be relayed back out then you can be in a position where unregistered entities can use your machine to make free calls. I guess this is a security issue. Certainly that can be an issue that one should be careful of when setting up a PBX. But when I hear the the term security and I am on a computer the first thing that comes to my mind is an attack vector for taking control of the machine itself. For example an ill-formed packet or sequence of packets that cause the server application to crash in such a way that executes part of your packet data left on the stack. From your response, I am I correct in believing that the issue is in allowing guests is in the former (free calls) rather than in the latter (taking control of your Asterisk box)? Thank you for any clarification. And, by the way, I was and am still a little take aback by seeing that everything except a spawned session of mini_httpd runs as root in my AstLinux box. I would much prefer that Asterisk run as its own unprivileged user. Tod Yes my own concern was one of preventing unwanted use of PSTN lines in an Asterisk box which was on the internet. I would like to share a problem I hit when trying to install runnix images from Windows recently. Obviously this does not involve low-level writing of an image files - I am talking about uncompressing/unpacking a .tar.gz to get the .run and its associated files out ready for copying over to the os directory. Niksa could you please advise which model of router you have got working with OpenVPN. Also can you confirm that you are running the VPN on the PBX rather itself than in front of it (e.g. rather than on its own router in box-to-box vpn mode). Out of interest, if you are running it on the PBX did you use the astlinux web tool to configure this ? Thanks Mart Niksa Baldun wrote: Martin, you are unlikely to find OpenVPN support on the phone. So far it works flawlessly, users are not even aware they are not using traditional telephony (admittedly the phone traffic is pretty low, rarely more that two simultaneous calls). Re: [Astlinux-users] genkd/genunion
Hi Darrick, I have been trying to sort a hardware issue and have now managed to try the genunion and export of the keydisk to the CF card. I am using astlinux-0.6.1-via.img.gz from your site on a Wyse Winterm box. My configuration was a CF card at /dev/hda with the image on and a keydisk at /dev/sda. I fitted a 1GB CF card at /dev/hdc. I ran genunion and it claimed to have worked. I rebooted and could make permanent changes to root password (nice!). However my PBX had not picked up any configuration e.g. there were no phones showing in sip show peers and my TDM lights were not on. I ran movekd. Unfortunately this threw errors : /usr/sbin/movekd: line 7: =: command not found /usr/sbin/movekd: line 8: =: command not found /usr/sbin/movekd: line 41: syntax error near unexpected token `fi' /usr/sbin/movekd: line 41: ` fi' Apologies if this is old news, but the first pair were fixed by removing the spaces around the = and the $ prefix on the left hand side on the findfs assignments. The second pair was fixed by adding a then line to the branch at line 41. I then ran movekd which claimed to work this time, but still my PBX would not pick up any configuration. I rebooted, still without success. I observed the console at boot up and the only thing possibly relevant was the message : ext2f_check_if_mount(): no such file or directory while determining if /dev/hdc is mounted. A df after startup showed : pbx ~ # df Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hda1 130734 38256 92478 29% /oldroot/cdrom /dev/hdc1 975268 9804915924 1% /oldroot/mnt/asturw none 92160 79392 12768 86% /oldroot/mnt/asturo none975268 9804915924 1% / none 20028 172 14% /dev none 5000 124 4876 2% /var none 1 172 9828 2% /tmp /dev/sda1 121999 6433109267 6% /mnt/kd I rebooted and tried again with the USB stick removed - again without success. As a work around I refitted the USB stick and ran e2label /dev/sda1 ASTKD my PBX came alive again after the next reboot. However this is not where I need to be, I now have a three disk system and would like to get rid of the USB stick on read the config from the second CF card. The root password is now changeable and sticky which is good though. Question: How can I get my configuration exported AND picked up from the CF card ? Your thoughts please Thanks Mart Darrick Hartman wrote: Mart, Sorry, been busy. If you are using both an existing key disk AND created a new unionfs partition, you should see a script called 'movekd'. I created the script, but it has not been tested extensively. It does the following: Moves files from a key disk to a unionfs partition based on file system labels (it uses 'findfs LABEL=ASTURW' and 'findfs LABEL=ASTKD') then moves the data from the key disk to a directory on the unionfs partition. It then relabels the old key disk with a different file system label (OLDKD). After that's done, you should reboot immediately, if not sooner ;) After rebooting, you should be golden. However, if you just have the keydisk now, follow all of the instructions in the 'genunion' script. It will prompt you as follows after creating the unionfs file system: echo Filesystem Created. On new systems you can optionally use unionfs instead of they key disk. To create the appropriate file structure, type yes. If you have an existing key disk and want to migrate your key disk settings to this new unionfs partition, execute movekd $DEV after this script exits. To create a new key disk structure on your new unionfs partition, type yes followed by the Enter key. Press any other key to exit. If you are new to Astlinux, you will want to say yes. If you have an existing keydisk answer NO then run movekd. Darrick Martin Rogers wrote: Hi any takers for this question please. Re: [Astlinux-users] genkd/genunion
David, many thanks for your reply. regards Mart David Kerr wrote: Unionfs turns the Astlinux RAM-based disk into one with persistent storage... anything that you write to the disk gets saved onto the CF card and replaces the version that is on the RAM disk. So all (yes every) configuration file will survive a reboot. If you use genunion, you no longer need the USB keydisk. Everything that was on the USB KD is now on the CF card (in the same file structure that it was on the KD). I believe that the genunion script includes instructions on where to copy your existing KD filed into the new unionfs partition so that you don't need to recreate everything. In general you wouldn't explicitly access the CF card by going to the CF card mount, rather you would access it through the normal filesystem... and unionfs would read/write from the CF (or the ramdisk) as necessary. However, if you want to see exactly what is on the CF card unionfs partition, then you can go to /oldroot/asturw and you will find it. Hope this helps Daivd On Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 9:05 AM, Martin Rogers [EMAIL PROTECTED]wrote: Hi any takers for this question please. If I run genunion, 1. which config files will be stored on the new CF ? 2. will the USB stick files still be required/used. If so which ones. 3. If I wanted to do away with the USB stick and just use genunion by reinstalling the system and not running genkd, where would the .conf files be stored on the CF partition. [Astlinux-users] How to use keydisk with UnionFS
Hi I have been using various versions of Astlinux using genkd and a USB flash disk with a good deal of success. I would like to resolve an issue whereby I am unable to update modprobe.conf (in turn because MODOPTS settings do not work). I have received advice from Darrick that I need to modify/create /oldroot/mnt/asturw/etc/modprobe.conf in order to do this. However, I assume that as I have never run genunion I do not have unionfs enabled. Of course it would be nice to change my root password too! Is it possible to enable unionfs but instead of using a second CF partition, to use a USB flash disk instead? If so, how do I do this? Do I still need to run genkd. Any help gratefully received Mart - This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100url=/ ___ Astlinux-users mailing list Astlinux-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/astlinux-users Donations to support AstLinux are graciously accepted via PayPal to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [Astlinux-users] 0.6.1 MODOPTS ignored ?
Darrick Hartman wrote: Martin Rogers wrote: Darrick thanks for the reply. I tried editing /etc/modprobe.conf originally (setting the filesystem to RW etc) but the changes do not make it past a reboot. I also tried storing one on the keydisk in case this could be used to replace the etc one - without success, it does not get copied over. Where is the fundamental copy of the file - it is probably this one I should be editing. With unionfs, you don't (and shouldn't) modify the read-write status of the system. That's why the changes don't make it past a reboot. If you edit a file, the changed file is written to the unionfs partition and when seen by the OS, that file is used instead of the file on the image. (so if /etc/modprobe.conf exists in the image AND /oldroot/mnt/asturw/etc/modprobe.conf exists, the latter will be used). Darrick Darrick, /oldroot/mnt/ does not exist on my system. Are you suggesting that I should create /oldroot/mnt/asturw/etc/modprobe.conf? What is the best practice way of adding to modprobe.conf. If I didn't know about this filesystem structuring (oldroot etc) how would I find out - e.g. is there any documentation which indicates how to create modprobe.conf settings on Astlinux, or details what files get overwritten from the keydisk. How for example should I kmow that some /etc files (e.g. rc.conf and zaptel.conf) are read from the keydisk and used by the system instead of the image ones but yet others (like /mnt/kd/etc/modprobe.conf) are not. Do you consider that the the problem with MODOPTS not being picked up is a bug which needs to be raised? Re: [Astlinux-users] Runnix obsolete?
Hi Mark my understanding of this is that it is only obsolete in that you don't need to go through the pain of installing Runnix as separate step. You would normally install a whole image which includes both Runnix + Astlinux. After that, you could if you wished, just upload upgrades of .run files to the runnix OS directory to make use of Runnix itself. Alternatively if you could just blow a whole new image of an upgrade over the old one. Mart Mark Phillips wrote: OK so I have a question for Darrick/Kris, The howto-ish points one at Darrick's website to download runnix. Darrick's website has the runnix stuff in the obsolete section. Why? Is runnix now obsolete? If so how does one install the AstLinux software onto the CF card? I'm kinda going round in circles here. [Astlinux-users] 0.6.1 MODOPTS ignored ?
Hi This is a followup to a recent thread on modprobe which did not conclude in any resolution. It appears that setting MODOPTS in /mnt/kd/rc.conf are ignored. I am using the astlinux-0.6.1-via.img.gz image. I have set the following line in the /mnt/kd/rc.conf to set the opermode to UK and to turn debugging for the module on. MODOPTS=wctdm:opermode=UK wctdm:debug=1 This line appears also in /etc/rc.conf after a restart indicating it was sucessfully soaked up from the keydisk. However, after a restart : /sys/module/wctdm/parameters/opermode =FCC /sys/module/wctdm/parameters/debug =0 which looks to me as if the two flags were not picked up in the startup processing. Using a single parameter such as MODOPTS=wctdm:debug=1 does not have any effect either. Is this a bug, or am I missing something. Re: [Astlinux-users] 0.6.1 upgrade - Unable , to create channel of type 'Zap' (cause 66 - Channel not implemented)
Hi I have resolved this issue now, and thought I would share it in case anyone hits this. After the upgrade all the original files were restored to the keydisk except for the rc.conf and the zaptel.conf which I created by hand. When I configured the latter I setup the file as : fxsks=3 fxsks=4 loadzone=uk defaultzone=uk which ztcfg seemed quite happy about. However what I had forgotten was I have an FXS module in port 1 which I no longer use (I use just sip extensions). I added configuration for this module as follows : fxoks=1 fxsks=3 fxsks=4 loadzone=uk defaultzone=uk and PSTN is all up and running again. The bottom line is that it seems you need zaptel.conf entries for every module on the card regardless of whether or not you are using it. regards Mart Martin Rogers wrote: Hi I have just upgraded a Wyse Winterm box which was running an old Astlinux (Asterisk v1.2) to 0.6.1-via. Re: [Astlinux-users] Skype vs Astlinux[Scanned]
I would just add two comments. One critical criteria for me on the Skype v SIP debate has been whether or not the user can always guarantee they will have access to a computer. I have found that for traveling employees Skype has its place. I agree that trying to run two systems side by side is not ideal, but in my experience the only practical way to transition between system is an evolutionary one. There are solutions but they require running the Skype client and hooking in to its API, and I am not sure that they are mission-critical ready. Do you run a VoIP system in your office today? Do you want remote users to contact their colleagues on a telephone at their desk, or is it OK for them to run Skype (or other SIP) client? If you run VoIP today, then setting up remote (travelling) users to use a standards-based SIP client (like X-Lite) and hooking them into your existing VoIP PBX might be a good way to go. If you do not run a VoIP system already and just have a traditional PBX, with direct dial from BT and you want office-bound to use regular telephones, then you need Skype-out like service. You could sign up with any UK VoIP service to give you this. If it is OK for everyone to use SIP-clients on their computers (or SIP phones) then sure you could set up your own VoIP PBX based on asterisk. But do you really want to do that if you are not committed to VoIP in your office already? Mixing VoIP and non-VoIP in the same office is not really practical. You have to keep it up 24/7/365. etc... As an alternative consider a hosted virtual-PBX solution, someone else runs the PBX in their data center, not yours. Take a look at www.pbxes.com http://www.pbxes.com for example. We have a handful of users on our network who want to use Skype to talk to colleagues back at the office from various international destinations as well as the UK. At what point would it be more economical (financially and bandwidth-wise) to sign up with a SIP provider and build our own VoIP server and set these users up to use our VoIP service rather than Skype? Like all useful technologies, once the cat's out of the bag, other people are going to want to use VoIP as well. I would project about 40 semi-frequent VoIP users after about a year. For bandwidth, I'm guessing it's going to come down to the codec choices and Skype seem to do pretty well with quality vs bandwidth. They're pretty cheap too -- so, is it worth my efforts building a VoIP box at all? What do you guys think? Thoughts and suggestions welcome! Re: [Astlinux-users] Problem booting astlinux 1725 Via Serial
From: Darrick Hartman [EMAIL PROTECTED] - 2008-05-13 14:40 Mart, Try one of the older images on my site. I'll be uploading a new image later today. We made some changes in the initrd which may be causing some of the problems you're seeing. Not sure why it's been so quiet around here lately. When I build the new images, I'll do both the via-serial and non-serial versions. Darrick Hi Darrick I tried the 1625 VIA serial image and it gets further than the 1725 one. It seems to verify and start the bootstrap of the Astlinux/Linux image. However it then runs into USB initialisation and locks me out of the console. I am unable therefore to change the files in the OS directory (for example to try the 1703 image) as I have no command prompt. What I see on the final screen (this is build 1625) is: Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.d00 usb usb2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice It then goes through a sequence of assigning USB bus numbers 3,4 and 5 before outputting the line : USB Mass Storage support registered. This is on the final line of the screen, there is no command prompt and the cursor is flashing at the start of the second line. Note that the machine is not totally locked up as the Num and Caps lock still toggle the keyboard lights on. Q1. Is there a way to get past this stage of the processing so that 1625 can complete boot up? Q2. Is there a way to interrupt the boot up so that I can get control of the console and change the Astlinux files - otherwise I will need to reinstall Runnix. It is a NeoWare E140 thin client (with 512MB flash disk module). The disk module has proprietary data and power interfaces and hosting it elsewhere is non-trivial. The usual way to load images onto these is via a bootable USB stick. USB Mass Storage support registered. Note that the machine is not totally locked up as the Num and Caps lock still toggle the keyboard lights on. I don't think this is a usb issue, if you're not using the usb, turn them off. Are you 100% sure that this is actually hanging up? How long are you waiting before giving up? There may actually be activity while the screen is blank. I am using USB to copy the Astlinux files from a USB stick. However this is not connected when I get these symptoms - and there is nothing else connected apart from a monitor and a keyboard. I will boot it up again and leave it for a longer period to see if it sorts itself out Thanks for your reply Mart - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. Re: [Astlinux-users] Problem booting astlinux 1725 Via Serial
John Novack wrote: Pardon the novice jumping in here, but why are you using the SERIAL image? This thin client has both a VGA and DVI interface, as well as PS/2 keyboard and mouse connectors. Are you not using those for your console? I have installed AstLinux on the HP thin clients and used the VGA and PS/2 keyboard as my console with a good deal of success. We are using the VGA/PS2 via a conventional console as you suggest. We are not using a serial interface. As far as I am aware there is no non-serial image available for the latest Astlinux builds, and as we need VIA support we have to use the VIA-Serial version - which oddly enough seems to be configured by default for normal console access. Thanks for your post all the same. Mart - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. [Astlinux-users] Hard disk requirements
I am attempting to install Runnix/Astlinux on an embedded device with a solid state disk drive. Can someone please confirm what the minimum and typical disk capacities needed for this environment are. Thanks Mart - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. Darrick thanks for the info. Mart Darrick Hartman (lists) wrote: Martin Rogers wrote: I am attempting to install Runnix/Astlinux on an embedded device with a solid state disk drive. Can someone please confirm what the minimum and typical disk capacities needed for this environment are. For a typical small office setup, get a good 512MB or 1GB CF card and configure it this way: 128MB for runnix balance for unionfs With typical use (voicemail, but no call monitoring) you won't run out of space pretty much ever. If you're concerned about life on the cards, replace them once a year or so. At $40 each, that's a pretty minimal investment. Realistically, you should get several years life out of a good card without any problem. Darrick - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. [Astlinux-users] Problem booting astlinux 1725 Via Serial
Apologies for the unthreaded post, but I have not received any mail from the mailing list since my 'welcome to the mailing list' email. Can you capture the entire byte-stream (say, with script -c kermit) and attach it? Although this is a 'serial' image I am have access to the console and am not set up for serial transfer to another machine. It is VIA I am interested in and I don't think there is a non-serial image available. I note that Ctrl-PageUp/Down on the console does not help here. Aside from photographing the final screen (which is a possibility) is there anything else I can do to help rectify this issue ? [Astlinux-users] Problem booting astlinux 1725 Via Serial
Hi I have downloaded the Runnix.img.gz and the astlinux-trunk-1725-via-serial tar/gz kindly provided at http://www.djhsolutions.com/astlinux/ I have installed the runnix image onto a NeoWare CA22 thin client and this boots up OK. I have unzipped/untarred the astlinux file, and have copied its contents : astflag astlinux-trunk-1725.run astlinux-trunk-1725.run.conf astlinux-trunk-1725.run.sha1 initrd.img into the /mnt/base/os directory. However upon rebooting the box I get the following message when Runnix tried to process the astlinux image : Verifying astlinux-trunk-1725.run... : No such file or directory5.run astlinux-trunk-1725.run not verified. Note that there is no space after the word directory on the second line, almost like the line has been overwritten. Has anyone seen this before or can anyone offer a solution ?
