Re: Book Recommendations?

He lost me at Daemon, and I never bothered with the second one.  You literally can't do that without AI.  I believe in the possibility of AI, but an expert system literally can't be that good.  Whether or not we end up with such a social structure in the end is hard to say, but perhaps we'll all evolve into brains in jars, destroy the planet, discover FTL, or do something strange like decide to deliberately stop forward technological progress because we are all happy with what we have.  I think that any short-term change that large, however, can't really happen.  Also, whether or not it's  "good" or not is defined by those who come after, not before, and we don't know what people will decide to do with or because of it, not really.  Predicting anything outside the next hundred years can't be done at all, not really-our rate of technological increase is quite large and is, itself, still increasing.
; As for the proposed expert system: you would need to either be capable of autonomy to the point of having emotional intelligence  for humans or your designer would need to literally know every person for which the system must be programmed to the degree necessary to reasonably predict them.  If he had said AI, at the time I read it, I'd have been more fine; nowadays, I have a better picture of what a true AI would be/do coupled with a computer science understanding of the subject, and unless we're careful it's not pretty (the links I can provide on this topic would take this thread way off course).I haven't done kill decision, and I basically agree on Influx.  The impression I get is that he hasn't finished  finding his voice yet, or that he hasn't managed to get it to his liking.  He seems to have good ideas, but seems also to not be the best at fitting them into books (or, perhaps, the editors get to it-we'll neve
r know).Timothy Zahn.  Dragonback is technically YA, but good if you just want to feel good about people in general, and quadrail is fun train mysteries in space.  His main genre is Star Wars, as I recall, but I've only read his original works. And here's something completely off-base, and the only genre I can put it in is, well, itself:young Wizards by Dianne Duane.  The first book starts off typical Urban Fantasy, and looks like it's going to head in the direction of fun adventure for kids.  They then end up hopping over to an alternate new york where the buildings and cars are out to kill them, and one of the three "people" (I'm trying very hard not to say too much as doing so spoils the whole first book completely) self-sacrifices to allow them to finish reaffirming the universe's existance by reading from a book that describes it in the speech, essentially a programming language which can describe everyth
ing and, in the process, rewriting the name for the entity responsible for the invention of death (yes, it's not enough for the villain to kill, it also invented the concept of dying and irrevocably wrote it into the universe).  This rewriting and an event in book 3 have some strange consequences which are, indeed, explored-if you are a being living outside time, interesting plot lines can develop.you're probably wondering why I don't call it fantasy.  First, wizards are presented as programmers and mathematicians on steroids, have to worry about the energy cost of doing things, have to worry about entropy, etc.  Second, by book 3 we've got sentient computers who start pondering if they can apply a patch for entropy, and a stargate system.  Common magic includes bringing air along with you, and it's easier to enter a gravity well than to leave one.   Wizards study such things as chemistry and physics. It's intere
sting, and a bit unusual.  The further you go, the more towards sci-fi.  This is the second thing in this thread so far that I consistently reread-the other is fine structure.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169226#p169226

Re: Swamp, zombie fps by Aprone

Hi all.Must say that after the initial plunge I never hit it off with swamp as much as I used to after a few updates and me getting tired of mucking round the place never really making inroads to the game I decided to drop back in here.I haven't been following everything thats out there but as I understand it swamp will be a 25 buck subscription for online mode because of the hackers and the like.I wouldn't buy online access for swamp in its current state, maybe mucking round advanced things may be hardcore would need to be brought but I don't really see swamp as being worth 30 bucks a year. For what it is 30 bucks all up maybe but still.I don't have the cash anyhow.Well thanks hackers now you have to pay for online access that will teach you or not as the case may be.For me it probably does spell the end of me ever going online with swamp.even if I could afford it I don't go online enough to concidder it a sm
art decision to buy a account on swamp. On which note, what happens if you have an account already on swamp will it remain open unless you stop playing or will you have to buy one.AAhch it doesn't matter.I doubt I will be back necessarily on the online game again anyway. It was good in the day but I am so out of touch and after getting stuck in map2, I really have not the time to really put work into trying to bash, hack and slash my way back I always got lost in buildings and other things.I do think for those of us that can not afford online that there needs to be some sort of campaigne.I The main reason I came on swamp was to chat with other survivers especially late at night especially when a big kai day was active.I did try a few times to muck in but mostly I hung close to the action and either shot what was in range. If swamp is destined to be payed, then I'm out, I am not a hard core bastard and never will be.I don&#
039;t have the energy or time to really make it worth my while right now and who knows I may never do.but it was fun.Just like to tell the rest of the survivers out there I enjoyed it all even though I hardly mucked in that much really.Maybe if I have the time and energy before swamp stops going free I will stop in and do something.maybeURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169223#p169223

Re: I'm making a new game, but have a question

Oh Mord-Sith, sorry for taking this long to respond. But yes, I forgot to tell you what the game was.  In fact I should probably do so, in case the game turns out to be something you guys aren't intrested in, and I post it all for nothing.  It's a card game, called trash. In trash, each player is delt a certain number of cards, usually 1 to 13, at which point they lay there cards out in a row from left to right. (the controls are left-right oriented as well, and you use tab and shift tab to navigate them.  Anyway, when it is your turn, you draw a card from the draw pile. If that matches one of your positions (say you get a 10, and the 10th card from the left is face down, and it exists), you place your 10 face up in the 10th position. However if this is not the case, you junk the card and let the next player play.  Anyway, if you did place a card, you read the face down card origionally in that position. If that matches any o
f your positions, you repeat the process, however if it doesn't, you junk the card.  Note that if your oponent junked a card you still needed to place, you can draw from the junk pile rather than drawing from the draw pile.  When either all your positions or the other player's positions all contain face up cards, all with numbers corosponding to the position, that person wins. And in the next round, they will be delt one less card than before -- so if they had 10, it will now be 9 that they start out with.  The first person to be delt 0 cards wins the game.  If that wasn't enough explaining, let me know.  Anyway, soon I'll do a layout overview of the game for you guys soon, and post it here.  Now tell me the truth. Are you guys going to be interested? Or should I not post the game here? Thanks,Steven.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169218#p169218

Re: Book Recommendations?

Influx wasn't my favorite; I agree with what one amazon reviewer said that it was more like an action movie, enjoyable but you have to kind of shut off your brain for a while. The BTC thing seemed kind of implausible; that someone hadn't somehow leaked it in all that time, that they decided to make a bunch of clones of only one guy probably without doing tests, who isn't even the director etc, and the resisters just so happening to find john; if the organization was that big and powerful, it just seemed a bit too convenient, but it's an alright book besides that. I thought daemon and freedom had an overall more optomistic tone than influx and kill decision, even though they probably had a bit more violence. The scale and autonomy with which the daemon could reliably operate without human intervention is somewhat hard for me to swallow, but I think something like the Darknet is very plausible, and might actually bring a better future if something like that were
to emerge. Btw kind of going into a different genre here, but Utopia by lincoln Child is a nice read, and it deals a bit with robots, advanced technology and such. Haven't yet read any of his other books, so not sure if they're all as good. Timeline and some other books by Michael Chrichton sound good, though I've yet to read those as well.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169217#p169217

Re: Book Recommendations?

Heechee is good, as I recall, but it's been a while.  The books start out very depressing, but do switch to the optimism later. For future earth, something I really liked is Charles Stross's Accellerando.  It's technically 9 short stories, but is more a novel.  Starts with tech we have right now, or can be reasonably expected to have in the next 20 years, and follows through until after the singularity and AI converting the solar system to computronium.  High points include discovering the galactic internet.  Strouss has some other good stuff, but I didn't care too much for the Escheton, and the rest that I've read is a strange twist on urban fantasy.Neuromancer (William Gibson) is widely credited as starting a genre, but this may just be internet myth.  Whether or not you would enjoy it depends highly on your age and past reading experience.  it's very fast-pased, but doens't do too much original bey
ond that.  It basically invented the Matrix. For really alien aliens, though I couldn't get into it, C. J. Cherryh has a lot of stuff.  By alien I mean "our language is a 2-dimensional structure" and "literally incapable of comprehending the concept of trading".Kevin J. Anderson has the Seventh Sun Saga.  telepathy and psychic powers abound, as do insect aliens, creatures that live in gas giants, creatures made of water, and all sorts of other crazy stuff.  Technically sci-fi, and basically feels like starwars taken in a strange direction.  Takes the entire first book to get up to speed.  It's not groundbreaking, but does have ust about all the sci-fi tropes, so if you like that kind of thing...Tad Williams is not someone I generally like, but Otherland is cool.  I don't agree with the premise or all of the ideas, but the storytelling is top-notch.  Group of people get stuck inside virtual re
ality.  It does address why this is possible, but not until the end.  The books are incredibly lengthy, however, and it takes 75% of the first one to build up enough of the story to really start rolling forward.  Tad Williams does not go for the hook, but builds the story properly-when you get to the parts that are good, it's good, but the groundwork is all laid in the proper order so there's no Deus Ex Machina.I wish I could point at something realistic for AI gone wrong, as that's just about the only thing I haven't or can't cover at the moment.  I have yet to read anything that does it right-either they're friendly, or they have it in  for humanity explicitly.Influx, by Daniel Suarez is good.  I didn't care for Daemon, and it feels like he's still missing something.  Again, I don't agree with all of the ideas.  Scientists discover gravity mirrors, which would allow one to do things li
ke cheaply travel out of the atmosphere.  Big conspiracy organization turns up and takes it from them, after arranging fake deaths.  Big organization has been taking tech they think would cause social catastrophe, and using it to keep taking tech, which is why we don't have AI and cures for everything and practically infinite energy, etc.And that's all I've got at the moment.  I'll have more later, I'm sure, especially if the topic keeps widening.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169213#p169213

As I said... he didn't invalidate the old testament. And context is still mattered... as I said in another post, as times changed so did understanding, and Jesus was the one who brought a more clear understanding to a later time. And that was the whole reason they crucified him... because he preached the opposite of what the old rules always said. Jesus did not say slavery was right, nor did he condone needless killing. Christianity would be a very different thing today if that really was the case. Again, there are parts of the Bible which are litteral and parts which are metaphorical.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169207#p169207

I might actually consider developing with this engine. If anybody has information please let me know.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169205#p169205

Re: [Audiogames-reflector] Book Recommendations?

2014-03-18 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — Off-topic room: Dark

Re: Book Recommendations?

Interesting discussion and there are several authors here I've not heard of. Heinlein is a classic, red planet was the first book I ever read in braille for pleasure at the age of 9, so I always remember it very well, though I find his adult stuff while fantastic in concept can both be slightly  preachy and down right disturbing in parts. Moon is a harsh  mistress was my favourite of heinlein's  adult stuff, on all counts and showed some unique ideas about a  society living on the moon, plus is a cracking good revolution story where you can route for the good guys. I didnt however enjoy fear no evil at all. If your looking for sf and historical, well doctor who ( when it is done  properly), is sort of both one reason I enjoy it so much (although I won't start on my thoughts on the recent tv series or Steven mophat sinse that would take another topic in itself and involve lots of threats of  violence ).I'm not entirely   certain  what you mean by "startrek feeling" I   know many authors who have written books about flying through space and colonizing or exploring new worlds, however few of them have the sort of  eutopian society  optimistic outlook startrek has. Equally, most of the optimistic sf I've read tends to be focused on future earth rather than the galaxy. For an optimisticauthor however I'd suggest fredric pohl, his Heechee books are very centered around a world slowly getting onto it's feet, and the first two novels at least have brilliant characters and a grat style. The series begins with  the book Gateway, and humanity discovering an asteroid full of alien spaceships capable of ftl travel, however having no idea how to steer them or how they work. This means people literally
get into a ship, put in a random course on the unreadable display and hit go, which could either mean ending up too close to a  neutron star, or finding an alien planet full of technology that could be exploited (making the discoverer rich in the process). The series then follows as you discover   the race who built the ships, where they went, and eventually why they left. Pohl is one of these authors who is just all around awsome, and his stuff isn't all gloom and doom, but if your specifically looking for space fiction ala startrek the  heechee books might be good. I would also recommend  the majipoor series by Robert silverberg, at any rate the first of them.  silverberg  Silverberg isn't a good author for complex characters, but he  does right a good adventure story, and his descriptions of alien planets and races is just down right awsome! the first book particularly   Lord  Valentine's ca
stle I would recommend for simply being great fun, although it's closer to star wars than star trek in terms of strange semi  medeval society with lots of alien races and a mix of technology and  religion. Anne mccaffry's space series might also be good. Though I found her dragon riders went on a bit too much for mytaste, she has written a lot of stuff set in the same universe. In particular her crystal singer  trilogy I  really enjoyed, especially as they concern people with perfect pitch who cut sonic christals for use in spaceship drives. LAstly I would really recommend Nathan Lowal, his stuff is available on podiobooks, or on http://solarclipper.com/ his own site. Lowel's stuff is very different, looking at space travel through the eyes of afairly ordinary  crewman  on a freighter who rises to become owner of the company, but the   world, the concepts and the chara
cters are just fantastic, it's one of these series where you really! start caring for people and understand just how difficult and dangerous running a spaceship might be. Lowel reads them himself, so they're all available in audio. There are many others I could recommend for different reasons,  Lowice Mcmaster Boujalt for galactic empires, Frank herbert for Weerdness, or Colin  Greenland for the most alien aliens I've ever seen, heck even Terry pratchet's two sf novels are very worth reading. However I'll probably stop here or this post gets too long.Generally for me, I don't particularly care  too much whether  a book is   sf or fantasy or whether or not it is in  tune with any given field of science, heck I've often found  extremely hard sf that just! exists to explore some sort of far out scientific  principle or new  technology in detail to be unninteresting if it doesn'
;t actually work as a story with decent characters, good writing style etc. What I do tend to find needed is consistancy in the books principles    and world which goes for either sf or fantasy, so that the plot actually has propper resolutions and occurrences, not just the hero suddenly increasing their own magic power and blowing all his enemies away with emotionally charged fire, or some  hitherto unsuspected god like alien race appearing and sorting everything out.I could go on about what sf I like for a good while, but I'll stop here .URL: http://forum.au

Re: Smugglers 5 invasion released

I think the scattergun may only work when it's one turn away though I could be wrong. Also, I think it's an issue with the game not streaming or retrieving the file correctly because when I saved my progress, then got into a fight litterally right after saving the same issue happened again. I closed out of the game, loaded the save progress up then proceeded in the same fight and on with out any issues. It was the same type of ship as well. I know the developer doesn't monitor this thread, so how exactly do I bug these things? Also I'm nt sure how the updates work for the game, so if someone could explain that too I'd appreciate it a lot.Thanks.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169203#p169203

Eclipse, I'd so do the second option. Well, he can buy only what he'll need - armor, a silencer, a good amount of ammo, and maybe an emergency gun like a Benelli or AR15. Then, dump points into speed and sneak, and run for it. Really, that's all you can do, especially at the lower levels. Okay. well, first, I have a bad habbit of getting lost... and the camera guide never seems to help. I'm at the first save point in day 2, with the big battle before the kunai climb. After the battle ends, I always seem to get lost trying to find that spot. Then after the first kunai climb where I have to kill the guard at the top, there's another battle that starts with a falcon dive off the roof. After that I have no idea where to go... and having to find my way to that battle is driving me crazy every time since there's no save point right before it. lolURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169200#p169200

Short answer... because of cultural and scientific leaarning. We can't reasonably hold to the same beliefs in physics, culture, and all those other things as we did 2000 years ago. As times change, the way of communicating the gospel and christ's truth has to change to speak to that culture. There's probably a longer answer, but Lord knows I'm not a scholar or all that learned about issues like this. Brian, Dark or Tward probably have more to say than me. lol And not to mention I find their opinions a lot more fascinating when I compare it to what I write here.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169187#p169187

It seems to work now though and doesn't have weird side effects involving those variables, since I handled them completely differently. We should be getting an XP release soon. The manual details each mission type, so check there for descriptions. At least, I'm pretty sure that's in the latest released version. If I were stuck on Map2, I'd honestly stay there for a while. Buy basic gear, then just loot like crazy. There are more places to find loot, more quests to do, and more locations to explore, but the map really isn't harder than map1. That's just me though. As to the concept of altitude, Swamp doesn't technically have that. When you go up or down stairs, or climb out of or into a hole, you're just moving straight ahead or switching to  new map. That is why, for instance, there is no way to enter the business on Map2 whose roof is the outpost; Swamp has no way of holding both locations, one on top of the other. That is also why the "roof" of the large warehouse is tiny, not a full roof at all, and why there is nothing where that "second floor" is, and why the second floor is jus
t a small area, and so forth. The cool thing is that SCS lets you simulate 3d locations. When the user steps on a certain tile, the location changes to somewhere else. So, to simulate a second floor, just hide that floor somewhere that the user can't walk to normally. When he hits the top of the stairs, a tile trigger jumps him to that new, hidden location. When he leaves, he's back on the staircase. Internally you're jumping the player around, but in the game, it feels like you have multiple floors, or a basement, or a cupboard under the stairs. Swamp doesn't yet have this, but my personal hope is that it is one of the coming features. Re: question about christianity

I won't turn it into an argument, but I do like a good discussion... but I think the idea of the bible condoning slavery as well as being full of contradictions is only true if you take it all litterally, and out of context. The new testament certainly doesn't condone those things and that is where most of the Christian doctrine comes from. the old testament isn't wrong or invalid, Jesus affirms it but also clarifies a lot of what was written down. Ahd the context is also important, not just in the book itself, but at the time it was written.. the deuteronomistic history, which was written after the very real exile of Israel and where the killing and attrocities you mentioned are located... was written by people who were just recovering from the very things they wrote about. Sacking of cities, killing of everyone old or young, whatever... but there is a lot of symbolism in the bible which people tend to miss out on. If you study the bible the way you would any other
piece of litterature, then of course it would make no sense... because that's like trying to study the history and fantasy sections of a library at the same time. As for the first four commandments, I can't answer that in any way that would satisfy anyone intelectually, so I won't try. I just think everyone should be a little more open-minded to everyone else. and Christians are included in that bunch... there are Christians who I know who slam other religions and their texts the same way that people attack the bible and our own faith. Both sides frustrate me... especially when studies of the Bible or any other religion's doctrine are only done on a cursory level and when someone doesn't ask questions and assumes that this religion condones that or is full of contradicting theories.Again, I'm not trying to argue or be offensive. Just trying to discuss what I know and share.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169180#p169180

This would let users make much, much more complex and realistic maps.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169179#p169179

That would be all well and good if the Bible were actually a book worth following. But anyone who really takes the time to study it will see that it promotes and condones slavery and the killing of disobedient children and women who aren't virgins on their wedding night among a shockingly long list o other atrocities. Even setting that aside it's so full of contradictions that it's laughable. Then there's the ten commandments the first four of which in particular paint a picture of a jealous, insecure deity who constantly has to remind us and himself that he's out there.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169177#p169177

Yeah, Ink got them in the jail. Not prison The inmate WHO tattooed him was Cohen, whose name Puck and the pals also find on one of the doors in the hallway. They can't make out what stuff Ink gave him though.Further than that, Ink had, as I remember at least, drawn some of the symbols on his walls, or something similar. I should go back and listen to those chapters, really interesting stuff there, especially if you start digging into it and read about the drugs they find at Raydon Labs:StanozololSolmatropinArenespMegaceFollistatinOther drugs worth looking into are the antibiotics Tanya uses on Saul, and the one they just found at Cain Hospital:VancomycinClindamycinSpiramycinNot 100 percent sure about the spellings, but I think most of them are right, I need to go back and check my notes. Re: question about christianity

Hi.Don't want to make my post too long, since if  did that I'd be going way beyond my bounds... and since I'm not as well-versed in this kind of study. but as a Christian who considers myself to be pretty open-minded to about everything... I would say that while there are some denominations and believers who are as extreme as Tward said, that's far from the case in a lot of circumstances... as Dark said, Christianity is so complex and so wide spread. I don't think it's appropriate to say Christianity on a whole is bad just because the personal examples you've seen haven't been good. That would be like saying every single Chinese person is cheap or a bad driver just because your local group of chinese populus happens to be that way. As for faith being about purely personal belief as opposed to evidence, not exactly true... Christians in nowadays are much more open if not accepting of the fact that religion and science can co-exist
together, the Catholics especially. Our faith does, in fact, come from historical evidence... and archeological as well. The remains that have been discovered lately of what has the exact dimentions and approximate appearance to be Noah's arc, for example. Do I believe the world to be 6000 years old? Not really... nor do I believe in the creation of the world in litterally six days. And many christians I know share the same perspective... but I also believe that if God could create Adam as a man rather than as an infant, then he could've created the world aged and then sent it on its way. But the personal experience or encounter with god is something which also contributes heavily to my faith. I've been part of at least a few freak accidents where I would've had to be lucky within an inch to escape serious harm, and yes, I have had prayer answered... not by a litteral voice, but I have had answers. I wasn't raised as a Christian... in fact there was a point
where I would say I walked away from it. It took me 6 years to find my way back... after about 8 years of half-heartedly going to church while not really wanting to.I would agree though, that the church and state should be a little more separated... not entirely, because I do believe there are good things to come as a result of following the plan God has for each and everyone of us, and for our nations. But I'm also willing to respect others enough to know that not everyone will choose the same as I... do I think salvation is key? Yes. Do I think as many people should accept Christ as possible? Yes... but I'm not going to force myself on anyone and smack them in the face with a Bible. But to lump Christianity into the same category as radical extremist Muslim activities is a litle unfair, imho.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169168#p169168

Well these don't feel much like star trek, but if you want a good sci-fi thriler type thing you could try deamon by Daniel Suarez, and the second book freedom. Also bzrk, it's technically a YA book but I still quite enjoyed it, since it's about nanotechnology, and the idea is pretty original. Also the paris option, part of the covert 1 series is another good one, just to name a few. Btw if you haven't read them already, the star trek vulcan's soul trilogy is awesome, as well as the lost era books.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169161#p169161

I just read through the rankings. They seem very accurate, at least from my off-and-on gaming experience. In addition, I am pleased that Apple Vis is on the list. I just got my Mac after Christmas, and have found that website to be an excellent resource for learning the Mac as well as Apple's other products. I think one thing this list demonstrates for sure is that I need to get back into gaming, and stay there this time. I tried to download a game for the Mac platform not too long ago and it totally didn't work. I believe this was UA Invaders or something similar, and their site hasn't been updated since about 2007. That's the other thing that impresses me about these rankings: the outdated stuff has been removed. Or at least it seems most of it has been removed. Re: Smugglers 5 invasion released

@Sneak, first might I suggest editing your forum posts rather than  adding lots of one sentence posts in a row, this is a forum not a chat system after all and they do rather clutter things up. Regarding scattergun, I've tried it when i can't get the ecm to work but I've never actually seen it shoot down any missiles, though i do know the  description says it should, maybe increasing the chances on scattergun working would be a way to negate the no ecm ability. If the game is  missing a ship jpg I can see why it would crash. Do you remember what kind of Jaukath ship it is?I would suggest you definitely need to report that bug.As to mail Dan I use outlook express  which is still the easiest mail program to use in terms of screen clutter and speed, again why microsoft decided to bugger  things up in windows 7 I don't know, just another reason to stick with xp.I'll see if I can get a copy of the files from b
mt micro, otherwise I might just have to wait.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169158#p169158

Re: Yaiba: ninja gaiden Z

Sterlock... did you beat Razors edge? Or just the original game? I find easy mode helps a lot too, especially since the game automatically switches back once you complete one of the days / levels. I love Razor's Edge so much more as compared to the original... the combat is just much satisfying. The fact that steel on bone is actually controllable now is great, whereas for 99% of gamers in the original NG 3 you kinda had to get lucky for it to work. lolURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169156#p169156

True that. Re: Why is jaws 13.0 a piece of shit?

I agree with SLJ. If you don't like jaws, just don't use it.Also, I can think of many other things that are a lot bigger in size than jaws. Heck, even some audiogames are a lot bigger than jaws, so I don't understand why people are saying that JAWS is too big when we've got dozens of things that are way bigger than that. I haven't had very many crashes with jaws on windows 8. The only cases where it does crash are when programs stop responding, but NVDA does this too, and it's extremely annoying. At least I can recover JAWS when it does this. NVDA, I can't, because it refuses to let me press anything, and when programs stop responding it does not work properly in the start menu or in task manager.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169153#p169153

Re: Things you really miss?

[[wow]], I bet those were fun times. Maybe it'd be cool if we could make a BNS driver for NVDA, or make an eSpeak voice out of it or something, but I doubt that anyone has those things or they're selling them by now since that unit is so old, but has fond memories all over it. Yes, the voices were cool and we could make it do funny things. I remember when I was in first grade, I made my Braille 'n Speak sound like it had a seizure, lol. It got so funny that I literally laughed outloud. I was using headphones at the time, and my teacher was wondering why I laughed. I took my headphones off and unplugged the headphone jack from the headphone port on my BNS, and shortly there after, I showed it to her, and the entire classroom laughed with me. I had this saved under the name, "seizure". I still have that file to this day on my computer's hard drive, and I don't know about deleting it or not. I don't know what synth they were using when they mad
e the BNS, maybe it was their own, or a different one. All I know was that the newer models used DoubleTalk. I recreated my seizure file on the newer BNS units, but sadly, it wasn't funny like it once was. I was like, "Uh, no comment." I also used the older units to do prank calls. My older brother would sometimes prank call someone, and I would sometimes bring my BNS with me, and I would make it do lots of wacky things. I remember the first time I heard my favorite synthesizer, Eloquence. It was on an old machine, not JAWS, but rather, it was back when Eloquent Technology wasn't acquired by Nuance. It sounded different back then. It had a more robotic sound, and I heard it in a store, I can't remember when, but it was used in a cash register, using the voice Reed. There were other languages that some of us never heard of for Eloquence, like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, that I wish weren't so hard to find for us to use. I also heard a few voices from
Lernout & Hauspie, like TruVoice, TTS3000, etc. Since then, I used Eloquence in most of my chiptune performances, but people keep wondering what that voice was, unaware it is Eloquence, particularly Reed, Sandy, Glen, and Bobby. There's a rumor that keeps going around that Eloquence will be on iOS. Is this true? Anyway, back on topic, I even remember DECtalk back then. I had the hardware version of the synthesizer, but sadly I don't have it anymore. I also had my first video game system, the NES. My first game I played on it was Super Mario Bros. It was a fun game, and I then had other NES games that I was able to buy either when I got good grades, did something good, for my birthday, or Christmas. I currently have 80 of them, my favorites being Batman, Mega Man, Mario, Ninja Gaiden, there are too many of them to name! I just wish Eloquence was used in other things, not just technology, as that synth brought back good memories first time I heard it. First computer I us
ed was a Windows 2000 PC running JAWS 7. I still have my Win 2000 boot disk, and now I have XP and 2000 on the same machine, running NVDA and JAWS on each.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169150#p169150

Getting super leum to run under windows 7?

Hey guys. For the life of me, i don't know why i never really dived in to this game until now. I know, i know, what the hell is wrong with me? This is a classic audio game arq, why have you waited until now to beat the game, much less play it? Well, i'm not sure, but i now really want to play this game. However, i'm getting a runtime error. I can copy and paste if needed, but i think it has something to do with some type of vb6 redistributable that i probably need. Any insight?
