Re: ideal way of creating a map parcer?

I'm in agreement with Danny here. Another point I'd like to bring up, is the fact that the question asked here was "An ideal way of making a map parser". For the 2 or 3 people who decided to storm in and start up a mud war, there was no reason to do so. In fact, that started at post 6, right? Omar Alverado's last post was post 1, and he'd been answered 4 times, leading me to believe that this topic was over! Before this crap got started! In post 1, Omar Alverado strongly, strongly suggested that he needed help with B, G, T. B... G... T! Not that he needed to be told "Use a higher level language", B! G! T! If the situation really works people like Ctoth, Camlorn, and Ethin up, there's no need to answer this topic! I talk to this person on skype and he's been programming for... less... than a year? Probably less than 6 months.  Well, rant over. *heads off to site and forum feedback to enquire about a rule on such matters a

Rule changes in developers room?

Hi moderation team,to the dismay of myself and other members of this forum seeking programming advice, the developers room is becoming somewhat of a war zone. When questions are asked in that room, even simple ones such as how to create a map parser, a specific group of people, (it's usually the same ones), reply to that topic seemingly with the intent to cause turmoil, by bringing up what they view as better languages, which is a sensative topic here. If you would please, add a rule to the forum against this, as it tends to lead to more flame waring, less productivity.Thanks,Steve.

The keyboard I use for text entry on the ps4  died the death of getting a drink spilled on it. If that doesn't work, then I can only  try initializing with  the firmware from the US site. Re: Bokurano Daibouken 3 : secondary topic

For stage 25-5, I used the super buster blade. To start, destroy the unknown energy. It's at hite 10, so you have to use the hook to climb to 10, and kill it. It doesn't attack at all, but it fully restores hp of the enemies when there low on hp. Also, one of the enemies has an attack where there's a sound that you can hear from both speakers, then there's a lot of explosions, maybe bombs. When you hear that, climb up on the hook, so you don't get hit. The bloody extingusher is like the boss of stage 16. Use something long distance, and have armor equipt so you can block the attacks. Don't try to jump them, because the boss uses one on the ground and one in the air at the same time. The other enemies can be defeated by the super buster blade, and remember to jump! There will be a lot of jumping in this boss, so don't just attack. The life burner is like the burner from stage 12, and the master battery is something that uses guns. It has a missile
  thing that does 2950 defense ignored damage, so jump that. It also has a machine gun. This is where you can almost own it, probably. Jump the other side, and attack. That's probably the way you can beat it. If it's to hard, just use long distance weapons. That's what I did, simply because i'm not good at attacking short distance and avoiding at the same time. After the battle, you will have to escape with Carla. Just run, but make sure Carla stays with you. Run a little bit, stop, wait for Carla, keep running, wait, and just keep doing this. I made it really simple for myself by barly running at all, and constantly listening to make sure she was there. Also when you beat the game, don't play the batting game! You'll lose all your defense, and I still cannot get my defense back up! It's good that I have no homework to keep me for grinding power up items.

Silversword IOS game is now accessible

2015-10-02 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : welshweyr via Audiogames-reflector

Silversword IOS game is now accessible

Hi,I'm delighted to say that an update this July made the fantastic Silversword RPG game accessible. It was originally considered accessible but there were some Voiceover issues with navigation. They're fixed and the game is probably the best IOS game I've found.It's a game in the style of a 1980s game called The Bard's Tale and it plays like Dungeons and Dragons and similar RPGs. You control a group of up to 7 adventures in a very large and immersive world with hundreds of items and monster variants. There's an over-arching plot but plenty of flexibility to just wander around and explore.Other good features, in my opinion, are the ability to create more than your 7 characters. You can have up to 25 characters created and swap which ones you take out. A massive in-app purchase expansion which not only gives you a kind of sequel game to the main one but also unlocks lots of bonus features right from the start of the main game. A wide selection of races and classes to play with plenty of weapons and armour to customise your party. A huge list of spells and skills to learn. Repeatable side quests. Resetting dungeons with many random encounters to give replayability. There's also much, much more.I really do urge anyone who enjoys RPGs to check this one out. I think the main game costs around £3.00 or so but it has hundreds of hours of gameplay and the random encounters and different character options means you'll get plenty of replayability from it. The game's forum also suggests that there may be another expansion on the way in the short to medium term future as well so there's going to be even more to keep you hooked.The game's website is:http://silversword-rpg.com/And it has a forum at:http://silversword-rpg.com/phpbb3/viewforum.php?f=1Enjoy!

You don't really get that on the ps3/4. Sure they add a bit in or remove a bit here or there, but they don't  totally redesign everything for shits and giggles. More importantly they never ever switched the background color of there menus to that eye searing white that you got on the 360. There were other reasons also, but I don't want to derail the topic. So in regards to export codes, I figured I would have to get a rock band 2 ps3 disk so that when I contacted them I could give them evidence.  Did you just contact them and say you needed a code without the game? If so that's great... saves me a fiver and a journey.Edit:assault_freak I think harmonix have prepared a DLC package of all the RB1 songs. Your purchase history is checked for the r

Re: Rock Band 4 is on its way

That might be incorrect, as I have a code from EA that should, theoretically give me the RB2 songlist as export.  I discovered a post of a forum saying about the EA reps still giving out codes if you knew where/how to ask.I'll see if I can get lego and greenday codes as they should still be available, then it's just finding 360 copies of the game that's the hard part really.I agree Harmonix have really turned heel on those players who jumped system, to use a wrestling term.  Their stance on DLC isn't great, but the good thing is it's not their fault - they'd been trying to get everything "right" since the beginning.  I'd blame Sony myself, as they continued to pretty much turn their backs on those not in the US, who continued to receive content as per usual.  Microsoft seem relatively willing to work with developers etc but Sony are always very opaque when it comes to their technology and their dealings
  with other companies in these kinds of circumstances.Ok Rant of sorts over for the moment.On a lighter note, crowd clapping is still in, though you'd have to tweak the levels to hear it.  Crowd vocals are also in, though I probably already mentioned that as well.

Re: Rock Band 4 is on its way

the game does a library refresh every time you boot it up or it did in 3. The way harmonix have been talking, your purchase history gets checked for compatible DLC and it gets pulled down by the game. The exports are meant to be working on launch day, as is a chunk of store DLC. If your moving up from ps3 to 4 your ok. It's the ones who jumped ship like myself  that are screwed. Rock band 2, lego and greenday are all unexportable now because licensing. Harmonix already said they are going to do basically bugger all for those people who jumped system (Probably a large chunk of their player base). That's a lot of good songs that we never get to play again. If you have jumped console, you can still pick up the rb1 export key and get the tracks from the first game that way but the rest? not happening.

Re: ideal way of creating a map parcer?

* renders 10 dollars to make unity accessible * just kidding, I don't have that much money in the firstplace. The reason I put that disclaimer at the end of my last post is because I was expecting, at the very least a moddoration warning for how I posted it. It could have been a little harsh, but the problem is, and this is why I quit looking in the developers room in the firstplace, is that this sort of thing comes up, every time someone is just asking for some simpple advice regarding their language of choice. I fully understand about expressing viewpoints on this forum and highly suggest it. I've even expressed mine. In my personal view, bgt has its uses. Would I use it for starting out? Yes. Would I, personally, have used it for producing something like dmnb or project alpha? No. But that's my own viewpoint. I have quite a number of people on my skype contacts, the creator of this topic included, who use bgt and i'm perfectly ok with it, as a matter of
 fact, I understand what philip was trying to achieve with the engine and if its what makes you cumffy, use it. Its the cramming your 10, 20, 50, whatever years of programming knolige down others throte that i'm honestly getting sick of. Once again, as i've stated before, i'm not in this to make a profit though its been suggested I sell dmnb or project alpha or any of the other installments in the series of death match, i'm not in this to get a job. I'm in it because I enjoy it. Its been my dream ever since I was 10 to create games, and I have no intention to expand outwards from that goal. Hents, pure basic serves me, personally, as a dev, very well. I'm not saying it serves others well. I'm not telling anyone to go buy it. I'm stating my viewpoint, that its served me very well. In my book, your years as a programmer don't matter to me. I don't cair if a person has 5, 6, 10, 20, or 30 years of programming, its what you do with though
 's years and how you act, and what you learn in that time that counts. I've only been in this industry for 3 years and have already learned valuable lessons, lessons which have served to better me far along in life, and I for one try to respect the freedom of choice as much as possible, hents is why I don't go onto other games and bost about mine being the most popular, because in my view, they arn't, their just games, far from perfect, but enjoyable, playable, and just games. The same with pure basic. I'll give advice if people ask it, and i'll give out the methids that I myself have learned and come up with, and people can do with that advice as they please, but I won't go on a forum and post a hole diatribe on pure basic and how its the gratest software ever created and how you should all buy it and such, because its not, it works for me and that's just my viewpoint. Basicly in less harsher terms what I was trying to express with my last po
 st was, by all means, express your viewpoints, but don't shove them down peoples throtes and don't be a jerk about it. If you can't express your viewpoints in a kind, collective and well constructed manner and you have no advice on the topic at hand, don't post its that simpple.

Re: Rock Band 4 is on its way

I explained my situation and tried to hammer home the point that I needed a code as I've switched but legitimately own all the games, and after a fair amount of back and forward with the representitive I got a code that, theoretically, should work.  whether it does, we'll have to see.You're right about RB1 being painless, I bought a really cheap copy pre-owned and bought the license through that on my 360, worked near seemlessly.  The way you know all your songs are available is if they all show up in bonus vocal solo tour, at least for me that's how I guessed it'd worked.I'll try and keep everyone informed when I find things out about exports, but I won't promise anything.@exodusThat's one of the good things about not having any sight at all.  You don't have to put up with frustrating ui changes of colour and such.  In addition, the Kinect was designed to be built into the Xbox One from th
 e ground up, even though it was removed in later alterations to the bundle configuration in stores.  That means the voice commands are easy to use, quick to respond and the facial sign in feature is also handy.  Moreover, the Xbox webstore is even more accessible now than before with the addition of the ability to make multiple purchases in one session.Anyway, back to the matter at hand, I'm curious to see how different the new guitar is as well, considering they say it's quieter etc.

Re: UltraPower

Just to let you know, one of the most corrupt aspects of this game is that certainn players can appear out of the blue and kill you without leaving a single trace. I was just killed a few minutes ago on HarmonicaPlayer's server by a player whose beacon didn't play and the radar didn't alert me to the fact that he was there. This should be looked into because it isn't fair to other players. Not to keep comparing, but RTR doesn't give players serious advantages when it comes to stealth.

I don't understand why people keep comparing this to rtr. This isn't rtr. The only thing it really has in common with rtr is the fact that you can kill other players. RTR_Assassin, my guess is that one of the admins on that server probably used their commands to move directly to you then killed you. Unfortunately the administrators on that server are, quite frankly, corrupt and in some instances, annoying. A lot of them don't know what they're doing and their only reasoning for asking to be an admin is so that they can give themselves stuff. Just check they're levels, I think that should be enough of a hint. Also their constant spam of using the notify and nuke command gets really annoying. To put it quite bluntly, most of the administrators over there do not make good admins.I've gone off on a bit of a rant here, but that would be my guess as to how they killed you without you seeing them. Unless the radar bugged and turned off or something.

Hi Druv,(this is not meant to be a lashing so you can go ahead and read and don't expect to have your head bitten off).  Perhaps that is a great suggestion. In fact I've enquired multiple times to Camlorn about Python and the stuff it is capable of. One of the reasons I am so hesitant to learn this language, well, rather than try to explain I'll put it into prospective, get you guys thinking instead of screaming.  I am told that Python is a great language to learn. It's free, it has many guides and books, and is popular and widely used. Python is good because of all of its libraries that come boxed with great features that are bound to make the creation of audio games much quicker and simplerBut stop... stop for a second. It's just like a comercial. Okay? Sure people are saying its good. And? Yeah? They say, they're developing all these cool things, but why am I not seeing any proof? What do I have to base their cl
 aims on. Only proof of anything I've ever seen was... this really complex sounding game engine with a bunch of special affects and geometry involved... and a sound library, which is taking at least a year, to develop?  Think about it. We have LibAudioVerse, Chris Toth's game engine, and NVDA. None of those being anything close to simple.Conclusion:Bottom line, if you guys really suggest we learn Python, try the following:1. Give examples. It's simple? Proove it. Complex sound libraries, screen readers, and game engines aren't simple, and none of us have seen any of you showing us any source code.2. Help us. Don't just say "There are books out there, try Learn Python the hard way" and send us packing and out the door. A book is a, well, book. It's bound to teach audio game developers 998% (and the secondary 9 was not a typo) of what they don't need to know.3. If it's indeed simple, make it loo
 k that way. I've actually been wanting to learn Python but I keep having terms like box 2d, Piglet, Pygame, PyAudioGame, and other libraries and modules I don't remember right now thrown in my face. I feel like a poor blind man trapped on an unfamiliar busy street intersection with so many people telling me different directions and ways to go, but not knowing who is right or what the best solution is. 4. If this is indeed what you want us to do, Don't be shoddy. And don't start acting rude because we don't conform. Examples:"*drops a dead horse**pulls out a whip*Ahem.You know, if you used a higher level language, maybe even one inspired by a particular British comedy troop, a lot of this stuff becomes a simple matter"This was posted two days ago, still I have yet to even begin realizing anything helpful out of that paragraph."Want to parse your map? tructure format and just read it in, have stuff transparently and magically go where it belongs."Okay but what on God's green Earth is YAML? How does it even work? How would it know where everything goes along? Would I have to make my maps in a specific format? Are the maps stored in files? Can they be packed with the game? Does it allow for encryption? Is YAML specifically for maps? Where can I go to learn more about it?You see, that raised about 15 questions in my mind."If anyone wants to come to me with running BGT source code, I will help you port it to Python. I'm pretty busy during the day, but will mentor anyone who wants the help, and even directly help you port the code over an evening or two."  Thanks, but what about Pure basic? C? C++? D? Those are just 4 of the languages I've seen floating around these forums. He might be able to help us port that code, but sometimes we need other help. Plus the mainstream commun

And back to the argument of multiple sources? Stack overflow isn't coming here telling us to use Python. Learn Python the Hard Way is not being mailed to our doorsteps. Search Engines aren't mailing Python as a recommended language to our inboxes, helping us get started. My goal with those sentences is not to express that the audio games community has to have things brought or handed to us, not at all! I'm more than willing to search up problems I have. But if a group of "experianced programmers" comes to us and tells us to switch to this wonderful language they love s

Hello all,First, for your information :The account bogdanmuresan having an e-mail gmail.com should normally be unbanned now; Up to now I'm concluding that there were some past confusion between him and abdul+swisskarl.The account siervodejusticia, having the same e-mail as the initial poster of this topic, should also normally be unbanned now; his ban expired last night, 02/10/2015 at about 04:00.Please don't try anything potentially harmful; avoid being banned again !All helpers have been informed about the exceptionality of a ban forever. Usual bans shouldn't last more than a few days, or, at most, a week or two. Ban forever should be reserved for special cases like Abdul+Swisskarl. Perhaps one of our error was to distribute too much infinite bans when one of a few days would have been sufficient. Anyway, most people who have got an infinite ban finally find a way to work around it.I hope it will make problems happening less
 often.For all others :This topic is smoothly turning into stupidity. Unless someone come with something really new in the next few days or weeks, I would close the topic soon.A few things are sure though :1. Except me, nobody else in the playroom team is reading the audiogames.net forum, or very rarely2. Calling someone a liar isn't going to help your case3. Saying that me or someone else in the team is incompetent isn't going to help your case either, if you have only fuzzy arguments like 95% of all what is on this topic. I will take a note for the other 5%, thank to them4. Trying to attack the server will definitely not help you at all ! By doing it, you are going to touch thousends of innocentsRemember that 1. The playroom is a completely free platform, there aren't even ads2. We are working in our spare time to developp and maintin it; we aren't professionals3. Playroom is a long standing pr
 oject we all love; be reassured that we are always sincerely trying to do our best4. Moderation is necessary but is basicly a waste of time. If you want to enjoy new games and features, please don't oblige us to use it. Nobody like using it.OK. I think that's my final word here.

Re: ideal way of creating a map parcer?

Well, write it in YAML or a similar serialized data s
 tructure format and just read it in, have stuff transparently and magically go where it belongs."Okay but what on God's green Earth is YAML? Plus the mainstream commun
 ity isn't likely to know how to create things such as audio only forms, or for that matter, audio only menus for games, that's just 2 of the mechanics of audio games Sighted people aren't likely to know about.  Bottom line, while you guys seem quick to tell us to switch, You seem a lot more hesitant (and maybe even unwilling, how am I to know), to help us get started. But if a group of "experianced programmers" comes to us and tells us to switch to this wonderful language they love s
 o much, but doesn't seem too kean on helping us do so, what should we be expected to do, other then say "No go away?"  Also I just wanted to add this as a side note after reading through all of the posts again, this talk of jobs may as well just stop here, because we're making games here. A map parser. And

Re: Rule changes in developers room?

Not wishing to discount the complaint, but you can of course just ignore any comment that gives you any heartburn. Some people will never be convinced of the logic of letting people choose what works for them; ignore them. It's regrettably too often the case that people stick to what they know and defend it rigorously, irrespective of the reasons. In my experience the real reason is simply fandom; they learned it and now they know it, so anything else must be wrong and people who don't use it must simply be worse off than they are. Use what works for you. If it gets results and makes you happy, it's all good.

Re: Python crash course

A word on Dependency Scavenger Hunts: I don't even remember what dependencies different packages require, only that some require more than others. They are usually either in the same place where you found the package in the first place, or can be found at pypi.python.org or by googling the package name.(In this post, I'll put code in blockquotes, so it's easier to jump in/out of.)Oh, and if you want to run a program from an external .py file (notepad *.py is how I create them), import it, like so:import my_moduleHere's an excerpt from my attempt at giving Pygame easier 2D audio (will explain afterward):import math

def convert(pan=0.0, volume=0.0):
 v = ((volume+50.0)/50.0)
 if v<0.0 :
  v=0.0
 elif v>1.0 :
  v=1.0
 pan/=10.0 # or 100.0, I forget which BGT uses.
 if pan<-1.0 :
  pan=-1.0
 elif pan>1.0 :
  pan=1.0

 vl = v if pan<=0.0 else v*(1.0-pan)
 vr = v if pan>=0.0 else v*(1.0+pan)
 return (vl, vr)Explanation:To play sound using pygame, one must setup the mixer, get a sound pointing to the correct file, then invoke its play method.To adjust the volume and balance, however, we work with the channel that ultimately plays the sound.(It's something of a mess. Hence, everyone trying to come up with something better.)For example, this should play a sound in the right speaker:import pygame
from os.path import normpath as np

pygame.mixer.init()
my_sound=pygame.mixer.Sound(np("c:\\windows\\media\\ding.wav"))
my_channel=my_sound.play()
my_channel.set_volume(0.0, 1.0)Meh, not impressive enough.Box2DSo, here's a Box2D example. To run it, you'll need my port of Philip_bennefall's sound_pool: https://www.sendspace.com/file/h0m7tyJust to note, it is kinda monstrous to just read without having looked into Box2D enough to understand what half the stuff does. I basically use this tutorial as my primary reference:http://www.iforce2d.net/b2dtut/The point of this example is to have a ball drop onto a box, then bounce it.from Box2D import *

pool=sound_pool()
slot=pool.play_2d(snd, 0, 0, ball.position.x, ball.position.y, True)

frame=0

class CL(b2ContactListener) :
def BeginContact(this, contact) :

print "Begin Contact..." + str(frame)
pool.play_stationary("ball.wav", False)

def EndContact(this, contact) :

print "SERVE!\n"
pool.play_stationary("ball.wav", False)
# Force.
If you run the above, you should notice... ur, nothing, since I didn't include the sound files. But let's assume you have the two files it needs, then run it.You should hear a looping sound get louder, until it bounces a bit--at which point the bounce sound should play.Then it stops for a couple seconds, then there is another bounce, and it goes flying into oblivion.It really shouldn't go flying into oblivion. I goofed up somewhere.The solution to the oblivion problem is to use Edges. I seem to remember some confusion as to how to use those with my copy of PyBox2D, so I went with the Rectangle, for the basic test.I could explain that code monstrosity, but I should have started packing by now. So... HTH?

Just thought I'd add a little something.  You know how Druv said he doesn't care anymore? I'd like to ask why any of you... cared in the first place. Oh wait you didn't. If you did you'd have helped instead of taking out your metaphorical whip and commanding us to switch, but that's really besides the point I guess.  I have a suggestion, probably going to be my final word lest I'm misunderstood.  Help, don't be snarky, sarcastic, condescending, rude, and unhelpful. Or, if you are going to continue being that way, don't bother posting, or if you do continue to post don't throw out anymore pity-laden rants about how little you are respected and/or listened to. Anyways nine times out of ten when one feels the need to post such types of posts or any other rude material in public all it really does is conveys to the rest of us that ya pretty much know what you're posting is unreasonable and are look

This is pretty much people sticking their noses where they shouldn't, and instead of being helpful, being demanding. So I say this with finality. The next person to command I switch to Python or make any rude comment, or heck, even the next person to insult will be reported because this is tiresome. And the only reason I'm replying to this topic and trying to end this, is because it will just keep happening, over and over and over and, over, again. How do I know? Try inductive reasoning.

What does your map file contain?Is it empty?The top should look something like this, taken from the top of the simple fight map:Map10 // parser version|flagsintro_text This is a simple map with a couple hills and boulders which gives you one of each type of unit so you can get used to gameplay and test out all the abilities.victory_text You are victorious!defeat_text You have been defeated!width 8height 8victory_conditions defeat_conditions |script_flags|map_editor_marker

Re: ideal way of creating a map parcer?

Look, Camlorn. Your little rant on post... ah, 18? It wasn't exactly helpful. All you do is go on and on about how Purebasic is bad. Right now, all you do is complain, complain, and complain some more. So, if your going to complain about our faults, and think your the perfect programmer on the not-so-perfect planet called Earth, please leave, because it's really starting to irritate some people (including me). I wouldn't be surprised if Dark comes in here and bans a few people.Seriously though. danny was right. You are not the master of python, assembly, or whatever else you've messed with. You do not know everything about every single programming language you claim to know. And I duly, and happily will admit that I do not know everything about every single programming language that I know. None of here are experts. None of us are perfect programmers. Yet you still, unfortunately, do not seem to grasp that point. we use PureBASIC because it get's the
  job done, and if your not happy with that, go somewhere else, cause us PB programmers aren't switching until we have a very good reason to do so.If you'd actually play DMNB, you'd actually realize that it is a very fun game to play. Yet you still sit at your computer and say that we are sitting in padded sells and complain how Python is so awesome, and how M68k assembly is so awesome, and complain how every other programming language accept BGT and PB is awesome. as Severestormsteve1 said, you are showing us absolutely no proof at all to make your claims actually truths. Yes, Ctoth has developed a FPS, but I bet you that if Danny and I worked together, we could do almost the exact same thing in PB. We can recursively traverse directories, download things from the internet, get FTP acess to a server, and do so much more tha Python just can't do without extra libraries that you have to get iwth Pip. Yes, PB is all about simplicity, but you ahve shown us abso
 lutely no proof that PB ignores wise rules that programmers have given. How do you even know i does do that? You don't know the main programmer of PB, and you do not have the source code, so you can't just spout things like that and expect us to believe you. You aren't the god of programming. And I know that you don't know the main programmer of PB because you haven't mentioned him once in any posts you've posted on this forum that are about PB.Now, this rant is done for. I undersand that it may be extremely harsh, but it seems like that's the only way we can get some people on here to understand things. I shouldn't have to post rants like this, but certain people just can't understand the  points we are trying to point out unless we be harsh with them. I'm sorry to do that, but, unfortunately, it seems like it's the only way.

Python crash course

2015-10-02 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : CAE_Jones via Audiogames-reflector

Python crash course

(Disclaimer: I have never written a tutorial worth anything. This does not try to explain programming concepts, and instead focuses on input/output. First post is basics. Will try to continue into external modules, since those are where all the power lies.)So they say that Python is awesome.But let's just give the tour, and you can decide.This will be fairly thorough, but you absolutely should not try to absorb everything at once. Install Python, get the basics of the command line, and meet me at the next heading, if you don't feel like it's time for all those packages and complex command line features.Here are some important links:Python official site: http://python.orgInstaller for Python 2.7: https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-2710/Googling "Python Tutorial" might also come in handy.Lots of Python libraries, particularly accessibility-related: http://hg.q-continuum.net/- Specifically, accessible_output2 is the most straightforward way to use text-to-speech and braille output: http://hg.q-continuum.net/accessible_ou … ve/tip.zipYou might also want Pygame: http://pygame.org/Or Pyglet: http://pyglet.orgAnd if you do anything complex enough, you'll want to find Numpy or Scipy, both of which are great if you wan to do low-level audio manipulation.(People who have spent more time with Python will tell you that Pip is an excellent way to easy-install packages. I haven't bothered, so can't comment.)Anyway, let's get on to the instructions.It is advisable to be comfortable using the Command Prompt. You can get away with a few basics easily enough:- you can find the command prompt in Windows, either by using the built-in search feature, or by typing "cmd" or "command" into the run dialog (windows+r). It's probably in c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe.- The most common commands:cd documents^ changes directory to documents, if possible.cd ..^ Moves to the parent directory. SO if you're in c:\my documents, and type cd .., you will move to c:\.c:, d:, e:, f:, etc^ change drive. You need to do this explicitly instead of trying to use cd /d.cd /d c:\users\^ change directory, given the absolute path.pushd c:\users\^ Pushes the current directory onto the stack, then changes to c:\users\. This is useful if you'll want to go back to the previous directory later.popd^ Returns to the last directory on the stack.That's pretty much it. You can use tab and shift+tab to cycle through files and folders, including searching or autocompleting based on what you've already entered.And any file or directory name with spaces or special characters should be surrounded in quotes. So if you want to move to c:\my documents, you'd type:cd /d "c:\my documents"Entering a filename and pressing enter will have windows try to open said file.Some programs take extra command line arguments. This is relevant here, because a lot of packages use a setup.py script, and you need to cd into the corresponding directory and type:setup.py installAnd it will either install the package, or tell you what other packages you need to hunt down. Luckily, just about everything you'd need will be either at one of the above links, or at http://pypi.python.org/If you want to mess with environment variables, you can set it so that you can run the python console by just typing "python" at the command line. But I'm too lazy for that, since I just installed python in c:\python27.Getting startedI'm assuming you have the python console up and running. If not, try typing this at the command line:c:\python27\python.exeThe important part is running python.exe, from wherever it installed.If it works, it should display a message with version number and OS information, then leave you at a prompt that looks like this:>>>I have no idea how to save console sessions. It's probably something straightforward once you figure out what the session is called internally. But, basically, I treat the console as a place to test and debug things.Anyway, basics of syntax:C:\Users\CAE>c:\Python27\python.exe

Moderation!First of all, @Aminiel thank you for creating a compltely free platform to play on, keep up the good work.Next, @abdulrahman.essam: this is now reaching into the realm of drama. Some folks might be more confused as apposed to lying, so they are trying to state their side of the story, trying to help where they can. As a result I shall keep this topic open to give everyone one more chance to sort this out, but if this continues to devolve into drama I shall close it. I hope this time the phrase third time lucky will work. Everyone just seems confused. This needs ot be sorted out responsibly, and I'm going to give you one more chance to do that. It will, however, be my final chance.

The problem is that the people who run that server make everyone mods. They set someone as mod, who then adds a bunch of other people which leads to a never ending tree of bad administrators. Although I hate to admit it, even the server host looks like they've used admin commands to give himself tons of stuff. Personally, I don't want to play on a server full of cheaters and spammers which is why I stick to Rovedwals server at the moment. I don't understand why the people on that server constantly spam notifies. Re: Silversword IOS game is now accessible

Hi there.I don't think this has enough accessibility improvements to make it playable. Although it does announce if moving forward is possible, and what is blocking your way, there's no way of moving around the map efficiently. I spent a good amount of time bumping around, running into mobs, and killing stuff. The combat screens move too quickly to comprehend what is going on. I have no idea what all of my party was doing or how much damage they landed, I just know I won. There's no coordinate system that I could find either.The menus are accessible and you can interact with the game fine in this regard, but otherwise it's still a game of ping ponging around until you find the right location. I'm happy progress is being made, but I'd still say it's not accessible enough to play easily. I could have missed some critical detail though, so please let me know if there are additional accessibility features I had disabled or missed.

Re: Rule changes in developers room?

Agreed with you both. The main reason I set this up was the following:1. I may be able to ignore these, but others can't. Thus, when something is posted, they all come back and spam the topic with arguments, bringing the topic to a point of closure, and digressing significantly from the original topic.2. This could get in the way of helpful advice. While I'd be willing to skip over the arguments and close the topic after I got my help, there could be a decent forum member passing by to give their advice, only to have it deleted and unread by the topic creator because they're unwilling to read after a certain point, because they assume it's all flame wars and drama as is always caused in these situations. Thing is, they'd be completely reasonable to have that mentality.3. If this keeps happening, no one will want to come to the audio games.net forum to ask about coding audio... games. And then what good is that?  This is why I r
 eally believe the moderators should step in and clamp down on this. You guys do a great job of moderating this forum, and I think it'd be even better if this issue were stopped.Thanks,Steven.

Re: Rule changes in developers room?

I for one sirtenly agree with this rule, seeing as i'm one of the first few people that these people target when it comes to my choice. @post 3 i've done my absolute best to try and ignore them. I am fully with the belief that users should have the choice of programming languages with out having to be commanded that they switch to another one. After all, if we were all intended to use one central programming language, why are their even other languages around? Honestly, this sort of thing is exactly why I quit looking in the developers room in the firstplace, and had the argument on the ideal way to create a map parcer yesterday not spun into personal attacks directed at the languages of my 2 best friends and myself, I would have gladly stayed out. So yes, i'm fully in faver of such a rule and would be perfectly happy when it got created.

Re: Python crash course

2015-10-02 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : Ethin via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Python crash course

I do recommend python 3.x, however that's just my viewpoint. Most code is easily portable to python3 using lib2to3 but some of it does not port properly and requires editing to work properly. The tutorial I'm about to give, which expands on cae_jones's tutorial, is for Python 3 programmers, although some of it will work on python 2 as well.Functions, conditionals, and loopsIf you did not understand the code writtein in post 3, I will try and explain, in some detail, most of the elements used in that post to clerify exactly what is done. I will, however, not relate to such elements.FunctionsA function is a way of categorizing a lot of code into a simple one liner. For instance, a call to a function called play_3d_sound does a lot of things using that one function call. The function is defined using the def keyword. The code is indented; tabs or spaces are accepted, but a mix of both will result in a syntax error.The s
 yntax for defining a function is as follows:def (): # codeordef (, , ...): # codeIf you look at each portion of the function definition syntax, you will notice that the items after the colon (":") are indented by one space. This is called the "indent level" and must always remain the same through the code while writing the function. The only time this should ever differ is if your inside a loop, conditional, class, try-accept block, or with block, or if you have finished the function. We will cover with blocks and try-accept blocks later.An example function would be as follows:def hello (name): print ("Hello,", str(name))Let's brea
 k this function down into segments:def hello (name):This creates the function. A function cannot be called unless it has been defined beforehand.print ("hello", str(name))This is the code of the function. Think of a function as a document on your computer. Inside the function is code that the function utilizes, so think of that code as text you write. The function is your document, which was blank upon definition of the function, but when you add code, your writing paragraphs for, say, a book or thesis paper.Did you notice the str() call inside of the print() statement? It is possible to call functions inside of other functions, just like you can open more doors inside of a building.Keep in mind that if you write this function and never call it, it will sit in memory, never being used. So, let's rewrite the funct
 ion, this time calling it:def hello (name): print ("Hello,", str(name))hello("Ethin")Output:>>> hello("Ethin")Hello, Ethin!>>>Did you notice the blank line after the function definition? This is the terminator of the function. This is not required; Pythonists just use it as an indicator to them that says "Hey, this function ends here." This is also used for terminating loops, classes, exception catchers, etc. You will see it quite often.ConditionalsIf you paid attention in geometry class, you will no that a conditional says "if so and so, then so and so." Of course, you will know that a conditional can be conversed and inversed: "if A, then B.", "if B, then A.", and "If not A, then B." or "If
  A is not B, then C."Python has its own way of doing this:if A: # codeif not A: # codeOf course, there are if... else... elif... conditionals, which go like this:if A: # codeelif B: # codeelse: #codeAn example conditional would be as follows:i = 15if i * i = 225: print ("i is 225!")elif i * i * i = 3375: print ("i is 3375!")else: print ("i is not 225 or 3375!")As you noticed, we defined a variable. A variable must be defined before we could use it.LoopsA loop is a block which basically says, "If A is B, then do B until C."There is also a loop which says,
 "While A is B, then C" and "while A is in B, then C."These loops are called the for and while loops. The for syntax is as follows:for a in b: # codeReplace 'a' with a variable, and replace 'b' with a list, dictionary, or function call. For instance, here's the most common for loop I use:for i in range (1, 101): print (i)orfor i in xrange (1, 101, 5): print (i)A while loop looks similar:i = 0while i < 100: print (i) i = i + 1This does the following:Declare the variable i with the value 0.Enter the while loop, which conditionally says, "while i is less
 than 100: "Print i's value.Increase i by 1, while keeping the current value.If we had simply done:i = iWe would have caused an infinite loop, which would have run, indefinitely until control+c (CIGINT (signal interrupt)) was pressed.Well, folks, that's all for now. See you later.

Re: ideal way of creating a map parcer?

This doesn't seem like the sort of forum where a whole subject can get banned, but I'm starting to think we should all write a post on the strengths / weaknesses / our likes and dislikes and preferences, lock them, then never speak of it again. Possibly sticky the locked posts so no one has to look for them.We then assume that anyone who asks how to do x with programming language/tool/etc y has made an informed decision to do it that way, or is too lazy to read the sticky and will reveal this pretty quickly, so we don't have to suggest switching languages/libraries all the time.Alternatively, we perform a ritual sacrifice of several tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, hire someone to make an accessible analog to Unity, and render the entire point moot.

Re: Rule changes in developers room?

I totally and completely agree with that rule. It can be even harder for someone who's just learning how to program who gets targeted. For example, someone tries to ask a question about programming a 2d audio game in python, a complainer comes up saying hey, don't program games in python, python sucks, switch to *insert programming language here* but, it's their choir. Unfortunately, programming languages, screen readers, and operating systems are the leading causes of things like this. Someone works for someone, they will defend it. And it's not just in the blind community either, in deed the heat rages on those online fights between Apple vs Samsung fans, for example. The problem is not everyone gives respect to freedom of choice, and instead tell people to use this and that language simply because it works for them. Everyone's different, everyone's got different learning methods. And it makes no sense either. Imagine someone trying to learn python
 or pure basic being targeted and told to instead use c++. Ok seriously, with all the choices around today, the common programmer of today will almost never start to learn off of c right away. So there you go, my 2cents on this.

Re: Silversword IOS game is now accessible

The two-finger double tap anywhere on the screen does tell you the type of terrain you're on, the available exits from your current square and your current coordinates on the map. You can also hear your footsteps so can tell if you're following paths or going on to some grass.In the settings menu, found near the bottom right of the screen (as far as I can tell) there is an option to slow down the text delay in combat so that messages scroll much slower and you can get more of an idea of what's happened. You can also flick through your party's general health and spell points levels between combat rounds to see if anyone needs healing or whatever.There is a help option in the settings menu with a manual. You can also buy an even more detailed manual as an in-app purchase if you want. The basic manual does explain some of the aspects of the game and I recommend reading it. Indeed, I refer to it fairly frequently. That, at least, is easy to navigate with standard Voiceover gestures. The in-app purchase manual mostly adds more detail about all the items and monsters in the game so is not essential. Also, the website for the game has a "lore" section which is worth looking at. The website link is in my original post.I will agree that the maps are super complicated and it is still the case that trial and error are required when navigating with Voiceover. One good thing is that the game does generate plenty of random encounters so that at least stumbling around the maps isn't uneventful. There seem to be some direction-finding spells but I'm not quite sure how they work yet. Unfortunately, the complexity of the maps is something the developer has directly addressed on the forum and it's here to stay. I've asked for more accessibility features in the "feature request" section though, including the ability to check if you've visited a certain square before or to mark a spot to orientate yourself from it (like in Shades of Doom). I'll wait and see if I get any response.It is definitely the case, however, that this game has a very busy interface and fiddly maps that do make it more of a challenge with Voiceover. If you're prepared to be patient and embrace the sense of adventure then it is really rewarding. If you're not comfortable with that style of gaming, which isn't at all a problem, this probably isn't for you yet.There is a very good and detailed walkthrough of the general things you're apparently supposed to do in the game on the Silversword forums. It gives you a good idea of the rough directions you should be heading for for each part of it. It helped me a lot although I will agree that the complexity of the map makes it less intuitive to follow the walkthrough instructions easily. You can find the walkthrough here:http://silversword-rpg.com/phpbb3/viewt … =742In general, my thoughts are that those who find the map frustrating, confusing and complicated are quite correct. I must admit that the style of the game really appeals to me so I was able to persevere and overlook the fact that I spend quite a while trying to find everything on the map. At least it's a way of getting XP and gold without farming the same dungeons. Besides, some of the Entombed maps got pretty big, laborious and complicated so it's not like we're completely new to that. I'd say that the main appeal of the game is the RPG element and the ability to control, with relative ease, a whole group of adventurers. The combat menus are easy to navigate so at least you don't get hacked to bits while trying to find controls.In combat you select the actions for each of your party members and then start the turn. As mensioned in a previous post, text then scrolls across the screen to show you what's happened, action by action, as your adventurers and the monsters fight. Once the round is over, you are presented with the screen for selecting the next turn's combat actions and can leave the combat menus there while you review the condition of your party to plan if you need to do any healing or anything in the following round.I do feel that the fact that the developer, a single person and not a company, has made such a large and vibrant game and still taken the time to implement Voiceover support is something I want to support. If the game doesn't sound like your sort of thing then that's fair enough but I've not found a more immersive and detailed accessible game for IOS (although I guess KODP comes close, despite having a different scale).Feel free to ask any specific questions that will help you play and I'll see if I can help.

Re: Silversword IOS game is now accessible

Ahoy thereI haven't tried the game yet,have always wanted to but from what I heard  by the developer himself and the players I thought I'd wait a long while until the developer got time to fix the existing issues. although welshweyr's post did make me quite excited and want to grab it right away. :dThe difficulty of anything at all isn't the issue for me at all, I do not mind difficulty but what I do mind is stumbling around in the dark and hoping I get to where it is that I want to goBut perhaps if the map overview is still not intuitive enough, perhaps the developer could try something like  A dark room. The combat messeges could be handled as alerts or again as a dark room handles them. That is if the developer wanted to,of course.I repeat again I haven't tried the game yet so I don't really know if any or all of my
  suggestions are worth anything at all,or if something like them is needed,but eh.The developer as far as I remember already knows of this forum, has already taken part in discussions about the game and so on. I would however suggest people do not flud him with messeges, from what I have seen he does not seem to appreciate that very much. :dstill and all, I wasn't expecting this game to be updated with VO fixes anymore, but now that it has been, its a good thing.grryf
