The most story you ever get is Shades of Doom level "there are evil monsters".  The most RPG mechanics you ever get is Swamp, which really doesn't change the mechanics as you level.  The most puzzles you get are absolutely none.  When asking this question, as someone who used to have vision for sighted games, the answer is "everything but the shooting part".

Re: what do you think that fps audiogames missed?

I think one of the biggest things that draws me to a game like RTR as opposed to the other FPS's is how fast and easy it is to get going. You just log onto a server and you are ready to go in no time. The newer fps's that try and focus on long term setup already struggle with lots of balancing issues. When you combine that with the idea of having a persistent inventory, things get hard to keep balanced really fast. Then you end up with situations where new players are trying to fight accounts that have been building up an inventory for months, and no one is having fun. (That's not even to mention how 95% of the weapons are never used, because they have no advantage over the sniper rifle or whatever that does 5 damage and one shots everyone) There's nothing wrong with keeping it simple. Simple works. (Hence why I still choose RTR)

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

I don't precisely know why I'm writing it here; there are times when I start typing something without knowing where exactly it's headed.  the basis for this post is simple; my uncle died today.  After spending a fair amount of time on life support, affected by covid, he just wasn't able to pull through anymore.  For him, it's over.  Today marked the end.  for us, I believe we're just touching the beginning.  there are days like today when I wake up and things like this happen, and I wonder just how much horror a person is supposed to witness before they crack.  I know it could be worse; that's no secret.  I also know there's a chance this didn't have to happen the way it did.  I do not blame the leader of the US for my uncle's death; it is appointed to a man to die.  The question of when is arguable; the matter of if is inevitable.  What I do blame this president for however, is that many, like my uncle, are battling to keep their families alive and end up with the short end of the stick because they have to keep working to keep food on the table and so on, while this man and many around him simply concern themselves with their personal interests.Yes, if you support Trump, you'll say my anger is fresh and that it's intensified by my loss.  Yes, you'll legitimately ask if there's a chance I can wait to assess the situation at a time when my mind is clearer.  Yes, you'll possibly wonder if perhaps this is all just a kneejerk reaction.  What you cannott do, however, is say that you don't know someone who has been personally affected anymore, if you've read this post, and more will follow if something is not done soon.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

Jayde, I think something else that should be government controled and built, and not based on profit are infrustructure projects. I live in an apartment complex that I think made a contract for the local DSL provider to not allow any other providers in, while  the entire area here has cable basicly, I am stuck with the 18 megabit down, 1 megabit  up ADSL that the  provider markets as high speed internet, which probably actually is illegal, because the defenition of broadband is 25 down, and 3 up.  That standard was in 2015  btw. This provider gives us a data cap to top it off, and charges us the same 60 that 1 gbps down and up fiber companies in larger cities pay. That price for that level service is a straight up robbery. When I asked if they would be  upgrading the speeds, since this was an outdated technology that came out in 2003, they said it made no economical sense to do so, and they wouldn't do it, iether and the near or disatnt future. And you know what? They're probably right. They face zero competition, and people have to buy their services, regardless of how shitty it is, because there is no alternative. If any other provider came along, people would  jump ship  immediately and they would have to do upgrades. This is the fucked up nature of a privately run infrastructure. Also in covid-19 especially, such connections didn't allow people to do classes at home, or to work remotely. What should be done is a national rollout of infrustructure, similar to how electric lines were done, and then the government could pay off the cost by leasing each provider fiber capacity on the cables. This way, providers would compete for the add-on services and speeds they offer, and not the cabling.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

Of course, all of this is predicated on a health-care system that is built for profit. The companies that ensure your health in the United States are not doing it because they care about you. They're doing it because while they will ultimately pay for a lot of things - though they'll fight you on this if you let them - they're in it not just to break even, but to actually make a buck. There's a whole field of economics based on this, and it's sickening. The fact that the health-care system is a for-profit enterprise in the United States is just flat-out busted, so I'm glad you agree that health care is one thing you think that folks should receive for free.I'm reminded of a book called The Rainmaker, by John Grisham. One of the main plots in the book involves a poor twenty-something named Donny Ray Black, who is dying of leukemia. His family bought a cheap insurance plan because it was all they could afford, and the company in charge of the plan repeatedly denied the family's appeals for coverage when it was communicated to them that the only hope for Donny Ray was a bone-marrow transplant. The company used every tactic they could, such as claiming that bone-marrow transplants are untested (not true), claiming that they're experimental (not true), claiming that the plan didn't cover previous conditions (which is moot because he didn't have leukemia when they bought the plan). And while this is a legal thriller, and obviously a work of fiction, I bet there are lots of poorer folk in America who can relate all too well to scenarios like this. In the novel, Donny Ray died, and a young lawyer sued the parent company. He won, but because they declared bankruptcy and then sprayed their assets into several other companies, there would never be a payout for anybody. Capitalism, the legal system and big business at their finest.

OK ironcross, people should not have the right not to  have health insurance. People who own a car or home have to have insurance, and noone is complaining about that. Not having health insurance is like saying hey I don't want to pay taxes, because I don't use the things the tax dollars are spent on. Firstly, you can't know if you will needee it for sure, and when you do, you can go bankrupt, and someone else has to pay your costs.  Second, it causes premiums to skyrocket because alot of people will think they don't need insurance, and not buy it.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

A little digging brought me to this source:https://www.npr.org/sections/health-sho … that-goingIt demonstrates that one of the reasons for the mandate is to give ensurers more candidates, which allows them to keep on ensuring people at reasonable rates. You take away that penalty, you let people just skate on this, and suddenly you've got a bunch of folks who no longer have health insurance, or who use one of the "skinny plans" (which were boosted up in a lot of places, I might add), and those who still do have health insurance are having to pay more. Basically it sets the bar higher for the poor, doesn't impact the rich in any meaningful way since many of them can pay for expenses almost out of pocket. So it looks foolish, sure, but it wasn't just "I want it done my way". There was rethod to what Obama was doing when he made the ACA. It's not perfect, and never was, but I trhink trying to attack it is just silly.Really, a single-payer system, more like what we've got here, is what Americans probably need. I think you can agree with me when I say nobody needs to be hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt because they had a heart attack and needed a new heart valve.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

Okay, thanks for that. It looks like Obamacare did not result in a net large growth for premiums then. They're rising, but not sharply in most cases. What mandate is ridiculous? As for the other bit about your family members just taking the penalty instead of paying premiums, that isn't Obamacare's fault. That's your American health system working hard to fuck you over. In Canada, if we get sick or injured, we go to the doctor and get looked into. If it's an acute injury like a broken leg or finger, it's dealt with right away. If it's something else, you might wait a bit. And while we do have to pay for much of our medications, the actual hospital visit is covered. I will never wake up in a hospital room and think either "oh god, will my insurance cover this?" or "Oh great, now I'm going to be ninety grand in the hole". That's the busted American health care system overall. Obama made a bad thing a bit better, by the look of things.

The only thing I see that is fucked up is the fact that healthcare is based on profit, when it should be a public service due to the necesity of having it.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

This is not a hard-and-fast rule, but I feel like people who are left of center value evidence, and people who are right of center value tradition.Someone on the right who sees yet another measure that will cost taxpayer dollars will try and knock it down because it's money that nobody has (or seems that way). Rather than trying to find a way to validate it, they try and find a way to make it disappear, or to make it fit into their worldview.Someone on the left, seeing such a measure, may very well ask about its likelihood and its viability, but they tend to be asking from a position of empowerment. They want to know how it will work, rather than wanting an excuse to take shots at it.So how does this matter, and why am I bringing it up?Simple. Things like Obamacare are not especially well-liked by republicans because it goes against the grain of what came before. But when they're forced to stare it in the face on a personal level, they often come to see what others saw before having to get up close and personal with it. They see that it's not just democrats trying to spend money or ruin big business; it's democrats trying earnestly to stop Americans from being paralyzed by enormous medical debt. The fact is, a lot of republicans I know agree with many of the big-picture things that are needed, but they're just not sure if voting blue is safe. If you ask most sane people if everyone should have the same rights, for instance, they'll say yes, of course they should. But when a democrat suggests a bill to offer people of the same gender the ability to marry, suddenly it's a talking-point because (insert your reason here). It's a problem, in part, because a democrat suggested it.There are people on both sides of the aisle who will reject an idea out of hand if it came from across the way. I'm not one of them, but I find that the more you're tied to things like tradition and rigidity and the status quo, the more you'll probably buy the concept of party or brand loyalty, which means that you're probably more apt to swallow your party's line, whatever it is, without tasting it first. Again, not a hard-and-fast rule.I'll use a hot-button topic for a moment. Abortion.Nocturnis believes that abortion is basically murder. I have no problem with him believing this way. If his wife feels similarly, then clearly they would never abort, or would do so only if guided by medical professionals to do so at the risk of his wife's death (hopefully she's never been anywhere close to that impasse, and never will be). Nocturnis is not trying to make me believe the same way he does. Now, if a democrat says that we shouldn't have anti-abortion laws, basically pushes a pro-choice agenda, that might upset Nocturnis. But I strongly doubt that he'd vote republican solely on that basis. After all, he knows that while -he may not like abortion or whatnot, other people should have the right to choose for themselves and deal with the consequences. I don't know all the ins and outs of his stance, but that's my understanding of it. His typical party might be pro-life, and he personally might be pro-life, but that doesn't mean he'd be pro-republican regardless of what they said or represented. I guess that's my point.

@247 and 248, both well said, and I agree. The bombed on your own soil is a metaphor, so those of you saying that we don't have to worry about being bombed should dig a little deeper. Even since the beginning of this pandemic, I've seen more than my share of racial profiling, sometimes directed towards me, but most often towards my students who are very clearly of Asian descent. And that's in Canada... talk about the "that can't happen to us mentality!" No Asians would've ever thought of being told to go back to where they came from in the last two or three years in Vancouver, but that's all changed as of late. So no, we may not have to be worried about being bombed on Canadian or American soil. But we sure do have to worry about smaller scale versions of that...

But I've seen it at work even here on the forum. The attitude of a Trump supporter:"He didn't say that. He didn't do that. And if he did say that or do that, he was only kidding. And if he wasn't kidding, then you just don't understand. And if you do understand, it's not a big deal anyway. And if it is a big deal anyway, it's for the best. And if it's not for the best, I still don't care."

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@Jayde: nailed it.@kjsisco: I'm sure the Jews said the same thing during World War II. I'm sure even the protestors in the US said the same thing: "We don't do that sort of thing." Suddenly we start seeing protestors dragged off for no apparent reason. So, to tie this in with the current topic at hand, we can point fingers and things all we want at China, but the US is quickly getting to China's level because we refuse to accept that it can--and will--happen here, to us.This is my reality: every time I hear the President and other people who can actually make this happen say stuff like "ban the Muslims" and other negative things against minorities they don't like (in order to feed their war agendas,) those remarks are very real to me. You might think "Oh, he's just being that way." But keep in mind the majority of our anti-Muslim foreign policy is sparked by anger; and most of our racism towards Black people is sparked by anger. I used to identify as Muslim. So when I hear "radical Islamist" uttered by people in power, I can feel the anger and yeah, it does scare me.But as America always does, we like to point fingers at places like China and their concentration camps, when we forget that in the US we have detained so many so-called "radical jihadi terrorists" simply because we can, and that we use to put Japanese-Americans in concentration camps. So, yes, we actually do that sort of thing. As Jayde pointed out, I know I'm safer here in the US than in China but the reality is that it won't be that way for much longer, not if things continue to go the way they have been.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

It's extremely unlikely that the government itself would bomb civilians just because. That's true. But other heinous actions aren't out of the question, be they from a government point of view or just one civilian to another.Look at how children at the border have been put in cages and separated from their families for weeks on end, for no real reason.Look at how there was a violent incident a few years back involving white supremacists, and the only thing Trump could say is that there were "good people on both sides".Look at how the government is quibbling about the rights of transgender individuals, and yet they're still preyed upon fairly regularly.America may not be a country where you will be destroyed for having a dissenting opinion, but let's not pretend that it's a bastion of openness and tolerance, either. And I'm sorry to say it, but it's gotten far, far worse in the last three and a half years. Oh, it wasn't a picnic in the park before that, but the current administration has done absolutely nothing to foster peace. On a more Covid-related angle, I'm sad to say that we're probably headed for another full wave here in Canada. More lockdowns, more restrictions. I'll go with it, but I'm done with it. My patience is low, and it's coming at a bad time for me personally. When I say I'm "done with it", that's just a statement of patience, not me trying to say I'm going to forget the masks and the hand sanitizer and all that jazz. No no, I still believe that caution is right. I'm just tired of being in this position, as is everyone else, I suspect. But if I can help some other people get through, then I will. And if they can help me a bit, too, then great. If nothing else, the one arguably good thing about this pandemic - and I believe I've said this before - is that it's teaching us how vital it is to actually help one another. To bend the rules a little. To disregard blind faith and the status quo for their own sake, and instead to embrace others because they're going through the same hardship. The thing I think most right-wing folk have trouble with about the pandemic is that it makes them stare social responsibility square in the face. It's easy to hide behind systems if you're a right-winger, to say "this is how it is, and probably how it ought to be because it's been this way for awhile". Right-wingers sometimes have problems with being able to empathize with people, and since we're -all in this pandemic together, and since most of them do have consciences, it's forcing them to take a good long look at everything around them. Nocturnis is a really good example of this going well; Ironcross and Accman are examples of it going...not so well. The point is, we're being shown inarguable proof that social systems work, and that we need to change things, and for some people, that's really, really hard to stomach.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

Canlorn, I think the important thing to remember about Munawar's posts is just this. He's a logical adult who probably knows, on a rational level, that he isn't at seriously high risk of being disappeared or bombed or whatever. But he also knows that mosques were burned for virtually no reason in America, and knows that racial profiling is still a very real problem. As such, rather than take the incidents he referred to as proof positive that he is in danger, I take them as I believe they were intended. They provoked fear and suspicion due to actions in America which might seem unthinkable but which still managed to happen, and even by some people to be condoned. Once that happens, your "this can't possibly happen to me" filter breaks a bit, and I believe that's what's happened here.Munawar, feel free to set me straight if I'm wrong on this, but that's the impression I've gotten. I am in no way trying to minimize the struggles you may have faced over stuff like this.

No, they are not. Let me clarify this. He is correct that the west is not innocent in terms of assimilation, but that argument has the effect of diverting attention away from the current day, and China's actions. No one ever said that China was the only one committing such crimes and I will assure you that they are not. They were simply the ones who were brought up.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@240It may be worse for you, but I doubt it's China levels of worse.  "My building might get bombed" and "The NSA is creating a listening post" are very paranoid-seeming.  As far as I know there hasn't been a bombing on U.S. soil by the U.S. government aimed at minorities, and the NSA wouldn't build a listening post anyway, they'd just ask your ISP to intercept your internet or something.  Both of these seem very detached from reality, if only because the NSA would do way better of a job than to let you hear them building a listening post.I'm fully aware that police interactions and the like are worse. Don't get me wrong.  And I don't particularly like fighter jet airshows either.  Also I wouldn't actually go out and shout that because there are problems it could cause, just not the FBI shows up at my door unprovoked problems, so it's not like that'd be consequence-free.  But the number of non-white people that the U.S. has disappeared isn't actually that many people at all, in all the cases I've heard about it's taken much more than an unpopular opinion, and we can generally find out that they disappeared and at least a vague reason as to why.  I'm not saying they're guilty, I get that 99% of them aren't, just that it's not quite so easy as having said the wrong thing at the wrong time.  The U.S. government at least goes through the motions of finding some sort of connection or something.  Your second cousin's grandchild is a terrorist isn't really rational or anything the government should hold against you, but it's more than the Chinese get.  China just goes "We don't like you, actual guilt is irrelevant and we aren't pretending otherwise, delete".Trump worries me, because we are actually closer to something bad than anyone likes to admit.  Don't get me wrong.  We can go downhill.  But I don't think that anyone in the U.S. has it as bad as in China.  I' absolutely not saying that how the U.S. treats non-white people is okay.  I want to be really clear on that point.  But it's still better than China.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@237: If you are anything but white, your chances of actually being arrested and "disappearing" go up in the US. For example, someone like me can't go outside and shout such things. In the US we have a way of ignoring what should be dubbed as terrorism--because it's domestic and conducted by white people. As an example of how much fear we actually live in, two incidents come to mind. First, there was an airshow that I was unaware of a year or so ago. I'm sitting outside listening to a book and I suddenly heard fighter jets scream overhead. My first instinct was to seek shelter because I thought the administration was going to bomb my building. Judging by this administration's extremism towards Muslims, I wouldn't say this is far from the truth. We literally have a radical in the White House. The second incident happened when some vans started pulling up to a building across the breezeway from mine. I would hear drilling and things of that sort throughout the night. My suspicion for the longest time was that NSA was either creating a safe house or listening post. This stemmed from the days and weeks and years just after 9/11 when there would be black SUV's parked outside the Mosque I used to attend all those years ago when I was Muslim. We had even seen people taking pictures of the worship center. So the government threat (for those who are colored and against those groups of people which the US has a vandeta) is definitely real.As another example, Jayde has said some things against trump I found to be threatening in nature, and I've thought to myself "I could never come on here and write that."

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@238Via GitHub, apparently.  See, GitHub is too important to be blocked (because it will crash the tech industry) and forces SSL (so they can't see what you're doing). This is why I say I don't think China is in a stable situation.  Maybe they'll fork GitHub or something, but they're going to just have to keep doing that until the end of time at this point, and that's not sustainable.  If China has an entirely distinct internet, oops, there goes being part of the world economy.  And, as long as they share the internet and we keep encrypting more and more, it'll keep getting harder for them to do stuff.  SO I'm hoping it's self-solving.  They had a little bit of a golden opportunity when the internet existed but we all just laughed at encryption, but that's gone now.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@226I doubt that you will believe any of us, and I'm sorry for that.  But two facts for your consideration.First: in the U.S. I can go outdoors right now and shout as loud as I want that I hope the president is assassinated, and I'll only get in trouble for it if the president suddenly gets assassinated.  The FBI doesn't disappear people.  I'd only get in trouble for saying stuff if I said "I'm going to assassinate the president".  Hopefully you know enough English to understand the difference between those two statements, but in case you don't, the difference is that the first is saying that I would like something to happen, but the second is saying I'm going to do it.  To be clear, as much as I dislike Trump, I don't want him to be assassinated because that would be really bad for the stability of the country.  My point is merely that I can.Second: China is way less free than it used to be.  They're just good at telling you that that's not the case.  In the 70s and 80s, it wasn't like it is now, but they've taken the internet and turned it into something where you can't even say things in private.  I don't actually value freedom of speech as much as you seem to think, but "we can't discuss facts" crosses a pretty big line.  What's your response to Tiananmen?China doesn't have free opinions.  You can't say things, but that's honestly the same as not being able to think them.  U.S. companies have to block certain terms if they want to operate in China.  China's government doesn't just prevent you from saying things, they prevent you from learning about things as well.  It's the closest you can get to controlling what people think short of mind-reading technology.  I'd honestly be okay with China if you were free to say things in private and could at least look up all the history rather than just the parts of history China's government happens to want you to know about.  Instead China goes as far as religious reeducation. You should consider whether or not your government is being honest to you.  In the U.S. I have access to any information I want on anything.  Sometimes this is bad.  I could, for example, go learn how to build bombs.  But it does mean that when I form opinions about my government or how the world works, I have access to all sides of the argument.  People in China only have access to the parts that China happens to want you to know about.

Ok, so on early voting, I don't know if it will be worth risking covid though. I hate trump, and want him gone as soon as possible, however, I have medical conditions such that if I caught covid, I could get into intensive care or possibly die. Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

Yeah, that actually looks pretty solid. It looks like the Philippines were definitely overreaching a bit. I doubt either side is entirely without blame, but territorial incursion, while common, isn't just going to go uncontested either. Also, to the post before that:While I agree that being well outside of a country means that you can't possibly know everything that goes on inside it - especially if the country is known for secrecy - unfortunately there are too many stories to completely ignore, many of which come directly from people who lived there and have personal experience.China has done a lot of pretty amazing stuff over the years - roads and manufacturing and stuff are among some of its greatest accomplishments, and there are others - so there is definitely benefit to the way things are run. Also, the fact that things can be done quickly in China is definitely a plus. However, there's no denying the way that totalitarianism is used. Why else are Chinese citizens forbidden from accessing certain websites? Why else are there "re-education camps", of the sort mentioned previously? Why else would there be a means of restricting travel, wealth and status which can be arbitrarily controlled by the government, which you cannot rise up and overthrow in any meaningful fashion? It's all kind of just a little bit too dangerous and secretive and dictatorial for my taste.Generally speaking, two core beliefs inform my stance on politics:1. Tell the whole truth, and let citizens figure out how much of it they can handle2. Say what you want, but accept the realistic consequences for itIf people could abide by both those rules, I am certain that the world would be a better place.Unfortunately, my experience tells me that China selectively ignores both of these ideas. Truths are selectively doctored or straight-up not included in history and education, in the name of further propaganda. And if you say or do the wrong thing, bad things can happen to you, far in excess of what would be the case in, say, the United States. Look at how angrily and thoroughly I have trashed Donald Trump, and wished something bad would happen to him. I have never made any threats on the man himself, nor would I, but I've made my stance very, very clear. My bet is - and correct me if I'm wrong on this - if I lived in China, and I was caught making the same sort of remarks, I could be fined, imprisoned or even killed. Is this correct? The truth, please. If you are Chinese and have an inside view, I would appreciate an honest perspective on this, and I'll be quick to apologize if there's anything that I've misunderstood.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@225The 1898 "Paris Treaty of the West of the United States", the "Washington Treaty of the West of the United States" in 1900, and the "Treaty of Britain and the United States" of 1930 clearly stipulated that the western limit of the Philippines' territorial limit is 1653118 degrees east longitude as the boundary, Huangyan Island is outside this range. The Philippine Constitution of 1935, the U.S.-Philippines General Relations Treaty of 1947, the Philippine-U.S. Military Alliance Treaty of 1952, the Philippine Act No. 3046 on the Baseline of the Territorial Sea of June 17, 1961 and the 1968 Philippine Amendment of the Baseline of the Territorial Sea have all reiterated successively The legal effect of the three treaties once again clearly defined the territory of the Philippines. The base points and baselines of the Philippine territorial waters do not include Huangyan Island. The maps published by the Philippines in 1981 and 1984 also marked Huangyan Island outside the boundaries of the Philippines. The above facts fully prove that Huangyan Island is outside the territory of the Philippines and is not a Philippine territory at all.The Philippines had never raised any objections to the Chinese government’s exercise of sovereignty, jurisdiction, development and utilization of Huangyan Island before 1997, and has repeatedly stated that Huangyan Island is outside the Philippine territory. The Philippine ambassador to Germany, Bian Fujini, in his letter to German radio enthusiast Dieter on February 5, 1990, clearly stated that "According to the Philippine Ministry of National Maps and Resources Information, Huangyan Island is not within the Philippine territorial sovereignty." In the documents issued by the Philippine National Map and Resource Information Department on October 18, 1994 and the Philippine Amateur Radio Association to the American Amateur Radio Association on November 18, 1994, both confirmed that "Philippines’ territorial boundaries and sovereignty were established on December 10, 1898. According to Article 3 of the Japan-Paris Treaty, Huangyan Island is located outside the borders of the Philippine territory".In the early 1950s, the U.S. troops stationed in Subic Bay in the Philippines ignored China's sovereignty and opened up Huangyan Island as a shooting range without authorization. In October 1977 and June 1978, the scientific research team of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences also boarded the island for investigation activities. After 1980, the Philippine government designated Huangyan Island in its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone. However, because Huangyan Island was actually controlled by the US military stationed in the Philippines at that time, the Philippines did not claim sovereignty.Since 1997, the Philippines has repeatedly dispatched warships and military aircraft to track, monitor and interfere with the radio expeditions of civil organizations in Huangyan Island and its adjacent waters. On April 30, two members of the Philippine House of Representatives blatantly boarded a naval vessel to board Huangyan Island. They erected flags and monuments on the island and blocked and intimidated Chinese personnel. After the promulgation and implementation of the regulations on the exclusive economic zone of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1994, the Philippine government claimed that Huangyan Island was within its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone and claimed maritime jurisdiction over Huangyan Island, and later changed it to Huangyan Island. Have sovereignty. On April 30, 1997, the China-US-Japan radio expedition organized by the China Radio Sports Association boarded Huangyan Island for radio expeditions. During the radio expedition, the Philippines dispatched warships and military aircraft to track, monitor and interfere with it.On May 20, 1997, a Philippine navy patrol boat arrested a Chinese fishing boat 11 kilometers away from Huangyan Island that was about to sail to the Marshall Islands and detained 21 Chinese fishermen. On August 5, 1997, the Philippines and the United States jointly held an actual combat exercise of aircraft and warships near Huangyan Island. From January to March 1998, the four fishing boats Qionghai 00473 and 00372 and COSCO Yu 313 and 311 from Tanmen Town, Qionghai City, Hainan Province were intercepted by the Philippine Navy in the waters of Huangyan Island in two months. 51 fishermen were also accused of "illegal entry" and detained by the Philippines for nearly six months. On May 23, 1999, a Chinese fishing boat was chased by a Philippine warship on Huangyan Island and hit and sunk, causing 11 fishermen to fall into the water. According to reports, the Philippine Navy used machine guns to shoot when chasing fishing boats. The spokesperson

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@222I really hate the face of America pretending to be a savior. In addition, you said that the Chinese media is controlled by the government. Then, don't the Western media also rely on capital manipulation? As long as you have money, black can be called white. For example, for political purposes, the United States allowed the media to report only negative news about China, and even maliciously smeared it, which led to some Americans' understanding of China very interesting.Of course, in order to fight back against the United States, China also reported a lot of negative news in the United States, such as the shooting incident, perverted murder, and rape by female nurses.I saw an interesting question on the Quora forum, is there electricity in China?Only those who have been to China can objectively evaluate some things.Chinese people who have been to the U.S. can also give objective evaluations. For example, in the U.S., the air conditioner can be on all the time and there is no need to pay attention to the problem of wasting electricity. Tap water can be drunk, or even played, without worrying about wasting water.Milk is quite cheap in the United States, and watering and irrigation of plants is all mechanized. In short, the resources are extremely rich, and there is no need to consider wasting resources. In the United States, most obese people are poor, which is the opposite of China. There are also some negative comments. For example, white people always seem to feel that they are superior. In addition: Freedom of speech is not necessarily a good thing. There is a saying in China. Don’t pretend to understand what you don’t understand. It’s bragging to express opinions on a field you don’t understand. .There is also a saying in China, low-key life, high-profile work, people must know how to be humble and reasonable. Excessive freedom of speech will make you very arrogant and unreasonable. There are some things you can say, some things in your heart, you don't have to say them, Those who understand will naturally understand,People who don’t understand, even if you say it, they may not understand, You can't explain it to everyone. In addition, there are organizations like the FBI in the United States. If you accidentally say something wrong, or the news reported makes them unsatisfied, you may suddenly disappear at home. The United States wants to build bridges and railroads, and it may take 10 years to start construction.China can implement it immediately.Good or bad, right or wrong, who can tell. The solution that suits your own situation is a good way.China has been a centralized system since ancient times. This system has existed for 2000-3000 years, and it is already a kind of culture. It is absolutely impossible to change to a new system for a while.Otherwise, not only will it not change for the better, the citizens may not buy it.Don't always think that the Chinese government controls the media, so citizens will not be able to see the real situation.Everyone is human and has a brain. Those who understand it will naturally understand it, and those who don't understand may not understand it even if you say it.In addition, in ancient China, speech was not necessarily unfree.During the Song Dynasty, officials could point to the emperor’s nose and scold him.Citizens can also blame officials and emperors. In some respects, the Song Dynasty was more open than modern times.

Camlorn, again, those trade embargos wouldn't have any effect, the country and its citizens would have widespread poverty, and you know that China controls all the media to push their narrative, so a vast majority of the people would believe  what they say, and happily join the army. I really don't think the US would lose that war though. I'm not saying this should be done or should be an option, but theoretically speaking, the US could use nuclear torpedos to sink the warships and drop low yield nuclear devices on military bases to destroy them. But I really think a full on  military  incursion is the only solution now. Economical sanctions will allow china to become even more self-sufficient, and turn the citizenry against the world.

The term "any means necessary" is not a good wording when it comes to politics. Such a wording means, quite literally, any means necessary. There's a really, really good reason that no intelligence group on the planet (that I know of) has that in legalese (anywhere). Its a great way to make groups like that go rogue, and its a masterful way to justify anything that group does.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

The Philippines, which became an independent country in 1946, has no historical relationship with the South China Sea Islands. Before the 1970s, the Philippines did not have any legal documents or leaders' speeches mentioning that its territory includes the Nansha Islands. The Treaty of Paris between the United States and Spain in 1898 and the Treaty of Washington in 1900 clearly defined the territory of the Philippines, not including the Nansha Islands. The Philippine Constitution of 1953 and the Philippine-US Military Alliance Treaty of 1951 have further confirmed this. However, because the Philippines is close to China's Nansha Islands and has abundant oil and gas resources in the South China Sea, the Philippines has implemented a new marine strategy of "protecting oil and gas resources in the Nansha Sea" and forcibly invaded some islands in the South China Sea Islands. In 1996, the Philippine Navy conducted amphibious landing exercises on Huangyan Island in the South China Sea, many of which were aimed at China’s Nansha Islands. In 1999, a Philippine warship collided with a Chinese fishing boat.thetechguy wrote:@196. China at the side of reason? lol. China should abide by the unclos which they agreed on. There is a saying that is said. There are no permanent friends and enemies, only permanent interests.According to this statement, whether it is a friend of the United States or an enemy of the United States, it is actually the same.Jayde wrote:I also don't trust the American military to do the right thing for the right reason, so to speak.Sure, they might be able to go in there and raise hell and get certain things to stop, but they're going to do with an anti-China bias. They're going to do it because they're America, god damn it, and it's up to America to enforce their fucked-up version of democracy on everyone, whether they like it or not...instead of, y'know, doing it to alleviate suffering. I just see it as a really easy way to further cement the hatred of an ideology which is, in and of itself, not responsible for the problems that are being faced. There may be a time to be more aggressive about this, but that time is not right now.

I'm no conspiracy theorist or in a more radical camp, but I'm not wiling to just take things at face values either, especially hen they are restrictive measures like this. Maybe it's the Taiwanese upbringing... all too many times people set measures in Asia that are for the so-called greater good, which turn into examples like the way China currently is now. @213I'd be careful what you say.  Any means necessary here means that you need to give us a number of lives.  If you're not good with 10 million Chinese citizens who did nothing to deserve it dead, which is a realistic scenario if people start fucking around with this by any means necessary, then you're not in fact good with any means necessary.  There is a reason war has become less common between developed nations, and it's not that we don't want it really, it's that we've made it amazingly terrifyingly deadly.I'd work on subtlety.  Your approach to China is any means necessary.   Your approach to Covid is open everything everywhere.  I can't tell if you're trolling or unintentionally coming across badly here, but honestly, having views like yours and saying them how you say them, it's really not okay by most of us.  If nothing else it shows that you are very bad at considering trade-offs and aren't actually thinking about what things actually cost us to do, and are just letting your moral compass and what feels right to you control it consequences be damned.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@204yeah. I don't disagree.  But at some point you have to draw the line and say "this country is actively a threat to all the other countries" and do something about it.  The reeducation camps are World War II level shit.  I don't know for sure where the line is, or what the answer is, but it's not entirely about helping them once you're at the point of religious reeducation camps, anymore.@207I'm pretty sure the answer is people stop trading with China over these issues.  No need to overthrow the government.  "You want to do human rights violations and no free speech? have at it, but you won't be at our table" goes a very long way as long as the people in charge are sane.  Instead it's "we're happy to give you special versions of our product that help you maintain the status quo".  At the end of the day China values and actively wants to be part of the world economy, and I doubt that they'd be able to spin it/cover it up sufficiently that the citizenry just stands by and keeps putting up with it.I don't think China is stable in the sense that they are sort of approaching the point where they will have to start choosing between keeping their no freedoms and oppressed masses status quo and actually continuing to play on the world stage, because with the modern internet and stuff it comes down to loosening things or asking everyone else everywhere to please give us an exception.  But what scares me is that they've built the apparatus to close their border and go North Korea, except it's even better than anything north Korea could have ever dreamed of.@209China doesn't exactly hold us by the balls financially.  All the people saying that are too busy making a political point to stop and inform you that at the level of first world governments talking to other first world governments, money is kind of imaginary.  At the point of hypothetical invasions or other extreme action, the U.S. will just go "we don't care about our debts" and China will go "that sucks, but we have bigger problems" and that will be the end of it.'I'm not sure China does actually hold us by the balls financially anyway, I'm pretty sure that's a much more complex and nuanced point.  But my point is that it only matters as long as both sides agree that it matters.  Personal-level debt is different than country-level debt because the bank or the cops or whoever can show up at your door, but all countries can do is get out the armies unless it's a situation where it's China and everyone else vs. the U.S. wanting to disregard debt, and the thing is China isn't very busy making friends right now and hasn't been for along time, so if it got to the point where the U.S. was willing to just say fuck you to China in that way, it'd probably be bad enough that everyone else would just be like "we're staying out of it" and that would be that.Mind you, normal times are different, because what's actually going on with debt to China is primarily big financial institutions who aren't governments working with other big financial institutions that aren't governments.  So as long as the parent governments on both sides are like "we have good relations" the things underneath them in the hierarchy have to function as you'd intuitively expect them to.  So, another thing is, the people using this to make a point are too busy to rephrase it as "Chinese banks hold some major U.S. companies by the balls" because "China will use their evil demonic army to enforce their debts and invade us one day" is scary and feels correct to anyone who doesn't have more than a basic understanding of what money actually is.  I mean, most people believe that the u.S. dollar is still backed by gold.

I also don't trust the American military to do the right thing for the right reason, so to speak.Sure, they might be able to go in there and raise hell and get certain things to stop, but they're going to do with an anti-China bias. They're going to do it because they hate communism, not because they hate heinous human rights violations.

The US would likely find a way to fuck it up. Attempting to overthrow them isn’t the answer. But people should be made more aware of assimilation policies being employed by the Chinese government. This isn’t the first time after all, and it’s probably not going to be the last either.

@208, I think we can all agree something needs to be done. But the US sticking its fingers in China's pie to overthrow the government would be really, really difficult. It might even risk warfair between China and the US, which would not be good at all. The US may have the strongest military on Earth right now, but that doesn't mean China can't force all their citizens -- or even a majority of them -- to become part of the Chinese military if necessary, and if they did that the US would horribly lose that one. And I bet we all know what China would do if we lost a war with them. They already hold us by the balls financially.

Jayde, I just suggested the US to do it, since already being envolved in  many conflicts worldwide and having the strongest military force on the planet currently, it would have the best shot at something like this. But I really think something should be done, globally possibly, though none of the previous US interventions generated any good results. Jokes aside, both the US and China are nuclear powers, and any straight up military action would have global serious consequences.

I'm just not sure the answer is "have America go in there and fix it". Because that went...really, really badly in Vietnam, and it didn't go so well in the wars in the middle east either. Also? China is big enough that if the U.S. tried to invade, they might just straight-up lose.I agree wholeheartedly that suppression of culture in this way is pretty heinous. I'm not in favour of it at all. I'm just not certain what the answer is.

Being accountable means nothing, when the country has put into place a racist, asimulation policy actively persecuting minorities in its borders and denying them fredom, their language, and the fredom to practice their own faith. I don't think an embargo would get anywhere though. The country has too big of an economy, and it would make the people suffer, and turn  the people more towards to the government, by allowing them to play victom.

I had a friend in college who had uygur parents,, and the government was observing their houses in ramadan so they didn't fast, forcing the muslims their to eat in front of people during the day, suppressing the turks their from learning their own language and alphabet, and the reducation camps. My friend also said the chinese don't give uygur turks passports, so they can't leave the country iether.   Seriously the United States should do the world a huge favor and overthrow the chinese government with a coup and violence.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

O no, don't get me wrong. I think that the Chinese people are effectively victims.  And the politics behind all this is really subtle, sure, because you don't want to do harm to the people when the government is the problem.  But the thing is, look at North Korea.  You let governments do whatever and play nice with them when they're all about the no freedoms of the citizenry and let's rewrite the past, then you wake up one day and everyone's scared to do anything to them because they've got enough bioweapons to devastate the planet and are just insane enough to use them.I don't like Trump's stance on China because Trump is using them as a scapegoat and ignoring all the actual problems, but I do think that in this instance the whole rest of the world should really being doing a lot more "You know, human rights violations, have an embargo" or something, because in general by the time the world as a whole cares it's "We care, but if we do anything world war III" or whatever  and it's too late and we all end up living with it.  Fortunately, China's government is run by sane people at the moment, wrong, arguably evil but sane people, but it's so easy for that to change.

@199, I don't think anyone is going to try and defend that government. As a person of Chinese heritage, I was lucky enough to see both sides being raised in Canada but still having regular access to Chinese media and news. No argument from me there, especially after some of the things I've seen on Chinese social media. But this by no means defines China itself as bad. Government actions should be separated from the actions of everyday people. But politically and on the international stage, particular in the last few years, China has definitely made itself unpopular and there's no denying it. As someone with both cultural links to China and Taiwan, I get to see their international treatment of other countries up close and personal.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@189, fair point. But how long do we need to maintain them for? Forever? IT strikes me that there will be some people who, even with a vaccine, wil probably want to keep restrictions in place. Like I've said forever since this started; there's a difference between reasonable caution and paranoya. And short of some form of herd immunity whether it be from a vaccine or just from a treatment that helps give people enough of a boost, you're right, there really is nothing we can do. Actions taken in the name of minimizing transmission can only be maintained for so long before negative effects start to show, imo. But I'm glad we can at least respectfully discuss this while holding different opinions. I'm sorry for how things are going in Ontario right now, because if another lockdown does happen, there's going to be an explosion. It's a lot harder to go back there a second time, and I don't think people will be as ok with it the second go round. Same thing here in BC. They aren't talking about another lockdown yet, but with cases rising and dipping every day, who knows?

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@Jayde, I do get it.  I don't like it, but I do get it.  At the end of the day, neither one of these guys really strikes me as the right decision, but one of them, at least, stands out as having been given a chance for the better part of four years already and, even if I could point to like, say, 2 or 3 things I feel he's done well, there's a host of things he's done that are wrong which far exceed the goodness.  It only takes seconds, really, to destroy anyone's trust, so while signing something into being may only have taken minutes to do in the case of Trump, the consequences and reactions of it will be felt for years to come.  The same holds true with his inflamatory commentary, his less than professional conduct, his blunt meanness.  Going back through history, I cannot ever remember a president being so publically childish, and how anyone can make excuses for such immaturity is beyond me.  For all of the above and more, I just cannot support any of it, and while the other guy seems less than ideal, I'm certainly not looking for perfection in a man.  To me, Biden just feels like a somewhat more left leaning version of Bush Junior... A bit less conservative, a bit less family values oriented, a bit less of a lot of things I'd like to see in a president, but a lot more compassionate and with a greater heart than Trump, and that's what I care about.  While it's true that you cannot truly judge the inside of a man by what he does outwardly, you cannot turn a blind eye to a man when he's being outwardly self-serving and abusive to people around him, either.  Trump had four years to apologize to the American people; he has failed.Regarding Corona, There's a lot of me that says that eventually Covid will become like any other cold virus we have, able to stay as contagious as it is but affecting us with less lethality.  I'm no scientist though, so while I believe the way forward is to simply go about our daily business and let this thing run its course (it can't kill us all or it has no breeding ground,) I also know what the ramifications of such a course of action are, and they're not pretty.  This is where practicality and pragmatism lose their appeal because they're just cold.  To say that we should go about our day is to say the strong ones will survive and the weak will die and lets all have a party in the end because we managed to get there at the expense of millions of lives lost and we didn't kick the bucket!  We're awesome!I sadly don't see the end in sight, because in my mind, you can't really kill something that isn't really alive, and I'm not going to pretend that voting another guy into office will bring it about, but, and bringing this back around full circile if I may, bringing in another guy who is at least willing to listen to you?  Well, that's like the difference between being depressed and sitting in an office with a psychologist who tells you that all the sadness you feel is your own fault, and the stereotypical everyone thinks he's crazy uncle who comes over during the family reunion and pulls you aside and away from everyone else, listens to your story about depression and goes, "Well, what do you think we should do about it?"  The Uncle may not have the answer, but I'd prefer his sympathy and empathy to the destructive bullying of the guy with the bucks and the fancy office, because the uncle may also know someone who can get it right.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

Coal is dead or dying. That's a fact. It's time to move on, as difficult as that undoubtedly will be for a large part of the energy sector.AssaultFreak, I see what you're saying. I guess I don't totally agree with you, but I'm not discounting it either. I do think we need to maintain the distancing and restrictions and stuff, and we (at least here in Ontario) are likely headed for another lockdown, unfortunately, which bites. Let me tell you, I am very unhappy about this. But what I'm unhappy about isn't so much the lockdown; it's the fact that we haven't beaten this thing back yet, and more people are going to get sick and die, and short of vaccines there's not really a damn thing we can do about it besides minimize our chances of spreading the bloody thing in the first place. I don't really see Canada ever going to the extent that some much more autocratic/dictatorial countries managed. Also, Nocturnis, thank you for getting it. Seriously. I know you're not super cool with the idea of supporting a candidate who may push agendas you can't accept morally, but I also respect you for being able to see the bigger picture.

That's why that phrase strikes terror into the hearts of free thinkers.I don't like how Trump is so hell bound for coal. Like really dude? I get that making money is better than cocaine and sex to you but you already have billions, don't start anti-environmental bullshit.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

@183, at least, we hope they're temporary measures. I'm sorry, but skeptic as I am, it wouldn't surprise me if the government, at least in Canada, finds some way to justify extending these measures longer and longer in the name of safety. That's dangerous to me, unless someone can show me some sort of other reasonable conclusion that shows they are indeed temporary. I'm sure noone there would say those measures are unfair, either. It's for the benefit of everyone, after all, and the higher ups know what's best and as long as you draw inside the lines, you won't be disturbed. Or maybe I read too much Asian history.

Re: What do you think about the Corona virus conspiracy theories?

I just subjected myself to like, 2 and a half hours of the guy's most famous quotes, speeches, interviews, etc etc.  I'm not sure what people see in him.  Even when he's contradicting himself he thinks he's right!  He tells Schumer and Pelosi that we need a wall because country's going to pot thanks to pot and terrorists and drugs yada yada yada, two minutes later, in that same meeting, the country's doing great because of him.  You can't have it both ways.  either the country's doing great or it's not, and if it is then it doesn't need the wall so what in the blazes are we even fighting about?Telling widows their husbands knew what they signed up for when they die in military service?  Trying to come up with less than creative insults for every politician he doesn't agree with?  Telling the whitehouse they should end funding for a program that aimed to educate young women and little girls in developing countries?  Oh, and it's alright that James Comey  goes after Hilary, that nasty woman, but how dare he go after Trump!  You're fired! And on and on we could go.  Repealing net neutrality, destroying ecosystems and creating hazards for the environment and nature as a whole, falsely claiming that he's signed more legislation than any other president including Truman. , claiming the US could use some good ol global warming when temps were colder than usual in 17, claiming that dems had \commited treason for refusing to clap for him after he'd given his state of the union address, appointing a bunch of people to the EPA that have ties to fossil fuel companies, being proud to shut down the government, blaming google for fake news, claiming Obama was responsible for the 0 tolerance policy that was separating famlies at the boarder, saying we have no room for immigrants while simultaneously saying we need more workers... I just don't get it.He's less than intelligent, believes he alone is right, is absolutely certain that admiting being wrong is the worst kind of defeat... I wish I were president if only so I could address all the wrongs this country has to move on to all the rights it truly needs... I will never be president, btw.  Don't worry your head about it.

@Jayde, you can get fined 4000 US dollars here for over crowding, and 250 for not wearing a mask.
