50, well the most important advantage of win10pro for advanced users is the addition of the group policy editor, which allows you to configure stuff like windows updates to manual, ask to download and install mode, to perminently turn off defender,  disable automatic threat action,  etc which win10 home just can't do mostly.

@47 Yeah that sically happened to me. I got the computer for free from Voc Rehab (with no input from me, so I couldn't choose a later model, which I would have), but that's the issue that I have about Dell, the Waves Maxx. Does Windows 10 Pro have to do adything with it, because that's what I'm running. Speaking of which, what advantages doesWindows 10 Pro even offer?

Hi,So when I got this laptop, it had Function Key Lock on. Which meant I was having quite a great time playinga udiogames. (not?) So I had to ask my brohter to help me to disable it in BIOS. If i am not mistaken, there is a thing in the BIOS called like Keyboard Settings or something like that, and then in that area is a thing called Action Keys Mode.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

Sometimes you can even just hit function escape to switch it, at least you can on Dell laptops. But the BIOS is workable with Aira or Be My Eyes Microsoft Support as long as you read up on what to do first. It's not just Lenovo that does the function key thing though, it's most laptops now.And I would hesitate to believe anyone that says an entire brand sucks.  It's usually just a couple model lines that have problems, or even a model from a specific year.  From what I've seen, all the top manufacturers have good computers, it just depends on what support they can offer in your country and if the model your looking for has been shown to have issues.Often times people will get upset because they didn't do enough research before hand as well, so they didn't know the specifics of what they were getting into, for instance non standard keyboards, pointing sticks, low voltage CPU's, or no repairability.  We all wish manufacturers would state these things in the specs but of course they won't, so unfortunately it is the responsibility of the buyer to try and figure things out before making such a big purchase IMO, even if the information can sometimes be hard to come by.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

@34 I honestly like portability because it's easy to carry around (in school when in-person teaching was a thing I carried it around a lot). I also like my laptops thinner so they're lighter, but I do like power. That being said though, I understand why you have trouble with the AMD. It appears that the Ryzen 4000 ones from my knowledge might even surpass Comet Lake in efficichcy (at least I would assume so, 14 nm vs. 7 nm), and I think they may also be less expensive. The problem I have to going to more powerful stuff (like on a gaming laptop) is stuff like RGB which is useless to someone with no vision. I do think build quality is a good thing to have (I've owned my Dell laptop for a year now and it's case has already cracked, even though I handle it nicely.)

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

32, those laptops while good, still are a rather limited  set of choices. The tough line is Asus's more budget range of laptops, wgich reflects in the plastic case apparently. And the g14, in the name of being portable, ditches the ethernet jack and  has several keys, pg up and down missing from the keyboard.I don't want a high performance ultraportable, because of the lower wattage CPU, decreased thermals, lack of ethernet jack and  missing keys as well as likely reduced key travel from having a paper thin chassis. I am eagerly awaiting more machines to come up which are more high end  Asus, Dell, Lenovo etc seem to be exclusively reserving those machines to mainly intel now though. The AMD variants always have much less hardware customisations, and  inferior specs.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

So a few things.Yes, programs are moving  to multicore, but that in of itself increases ram usage, as the processes, e.g firefox get split up.  12 gb wouldn't make much sense, remember until now ram has increased  by doubling, e.g, 2 gb, 4 gb, 8 gb, and now 16 gb being the norm. I did have a 3gb laptop, but I think that was a Turkey specific thing rather than the norm, as the  international model had 4 when I checked. For ram, it also is important to have dual channel memory, as that exacts a performance penalty on single channel. Ram speed for AMD processors is also very important apparently, so it is advised to use the fastest, asus's gaming laptop with the 4900hs uses 3200mhz ram.Ram usage would be another reason I would opt for a discrete GPU as well.

Sorry for the double-post.As much as I don't like upgrading my laptops the year after I got them (I have a 2019 13-inch MBP for Mac-based applications), I am seriously considering it because of the keyboard. I cannot stand the butterfly keyboard, and I know that if I upgrade now, it'll last me another 7 years like my 2012 one did. 32GB even in music production in Logic wouldn't even be needed, it's mostly the processor for me that is the bottle-neck. That's one reason I like Macs more, because you tend to know what audio you're getting when you buy them.

@Enes and @NevEdYeah point taken, and I've edited the post suggesting 6GB minimum.  My computer starts to lag allot at around 7.5GB usage, and many users aren't as careful about closing extra programs or checking what's running on startup, so with only like 1.5GB wiggleroom and the fact that integrated GPU's use your RAM plus that paging thing, I see what you mean.I still feel like more RAM isn't as much of a futureproofing measure any more, given that it seems as though multi core usage is now the determining factor for most programs trying to eek out more power, rather than more RAM like in the jump from 32 to 64 bit.Still, given that modern laptops have increasingly bad user access, installing your own additional RAM after the fact may not be easy or even possible, so I can definitely find the value in buying a computer with more preinstalled.I just wish that manufacturers still gave you the option of 12GB, because that would make more sense cost wise, which of course, is why they don't.  LOL

Meh, maybe theirs a special case where dedicated graphics is better than IGPU for light stuff but honestly I never ran into instances like that. Ironically the old macbook I used to use before I got my Mag-15, ran way better on windows, it was super snappy, probably because it didn't throttle like Mac OS, and I worked that boy out, that thing was playing Doom 2016 and it had no business playing that game.

Well, I would still get a discrete GPU, as the intigrated GPU has increased latency, and uses system ram. Believe it or not GPUs are used for more than games, especially browsers, such as Firefox  web render. Some audio/video programs apparently also can process with the GPU instead of the CPU. You can't get a high end system without a discrete GPU anyway.

Honestly man, go for what you like, but when I got my macbook in 2017, the jump from 4 gb to 16 was extremly noticeable. For it's not hard to get almost up to 8 gb RAM usage at all and I'm the kind of guy that doesn't like to get the bear minimum only to have to upgrade later. It's just an avoidable pain in the ass. And honestly $80 is not bad for 16 gb because I paid a little under that for my desktop. And if you wanna do video encoding or audio editing, 16 gb is absolutely necessary. Hell I'd say even 32 but only for the video part. Even if you don't do that rite now it'd be a bummer if you try something and realize that your RAM is your limiting factor. Also, I've noticed that Firefox has been eating a bit more RAM lately. Also Windows 10 takes more of your RAM when you have more, to cache files and stuff, to avoid hitting the pagefile or unnecessary disk usage, so theirs that distinctive advantage, or not depending on how you feel about stuff like that.Imo last priority in this guys case would be gpu which is a heavy chunk off any computer price. He said he wanted an xbox for AAA games, so IGPU (I've heard lots of good things about AMDs IGPUs, Vega graphics or something?) will be just fine.

Defender, remember about 4-5 years ago, it was said that 4 gb was more than adequate, and then I was feeling the limitations of 4gb, and now I am feeling the limits of 8gb. I can use about 5.5-6gb without trying  at all. And remember, if you get more ram, its basicly future proofing, as I saw.  Firefox ram balooned with process split, as well as windows with svchost.exe process isolation. I would get 16 gb minimum, and possibly go up to 32, even 64 if my budget enabled me to do so.

Hi there,As of now, I am using an HP Laptop with an Intel core I3 10th gen processor, with 8GB ram and 128GB SSD. It sounds crappy, but honestly, it runs like an Intel core I5. It's just that great. You can have almost up to 7 tasks open on this thing and it only takes up about 5 gigs of the ram. It is also hyper threaded, so it gives the processor that oomf to it. The fans do go crazy every once and awhile, but its nothing to panick about as long as you're not running like, 30 task windows on it or something. The price of the laptop was around $358USD, so it was rather affordable. If you are looking for something that can run most audiogames with barely any speed hacks, then an Intel Core I3 hyperthreaded processor is the best way to go for something inexpensive and lightweight. Here is my system information if you want to take a quicker look at the specs.System Manufacturer; Value: HP 6 of 41System Model; Value: HP Laptop 15-dy1xxx 7 of 41System Type; Value: x64-based PC 8 of 41Processor; Value: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-1005G1 CPU @ 1.20GHz, 1190 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) 10 of 41Installed Physical Memory (RAM); Value: 8.00 GB 28 of 41Total Physical Memory; Value: 7.76 GB 29 of 41Hope this helps.

@NevEdAgreed about the 4GB thing but 16GB minimum?  I don't know man, I think the RAM upselling propoganda machine has gotten to you.Unless your virtualizing another system alongside or working with a shit ton of VST's at once in an audio program or something, I think 8 is perfectly reasonable.Personally I almost never get over 5GB even with a bunch of tabs open in Chrome, word open in the other window and a PDF in Acrobat with Dropbox running in the background, and I"ve seen similar results with other people's Windows 10 laptops, even without all the manufacturer bloatware removed.I believe that these days RAM is the last priority as long as you have a comfortable amount, but manufacturers are happy to charge you another 80 bucks for the false security of another 8GB.

Gonna just post my $0.02 here, didn't read all the posts yet. But do not, and I repeat, do not get a laptop (especially if it's not upgradable) with only 4 gb. Don't do it. Chrome will eat your RAM like I'm sure my ass will eat once this damn lockdown gets lifted. 8 GB is eeh but pushing it. If you can 16 gb minimum. The ryzen CPUs are great and I've heard nothing bad about them, but I've never used them in a laptop. Just have a 2700 in my desktop rig. If you're gonna have an xbox for the mainstream games, then that $1000 laptop will be more than just fine for you I'm sure. But make sure you check to make sure if any parts are user-replaceable, because that can determine how long you can use that machine for the foreseeable future.Edit: And if integrated sound is important to you, avoid anything that uses realtek. Fuck realtek forever and ever with a spiked bat on the beaches of hell while drinking white lightning.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

Honestly, I find the portability craze to make laptops that are paper thin and have 27 hours of battery life pointless. You're battery will decline each time you charge it, and as it ages,  and it will likely be soldered anyway, so replacements will be costly, and only a service technician likely could replace the specifically tailored part. Another reason I would avoid ultraportables  is because to make themselves more portable, they remove so called unnecesary keys that we blind folk use all the time, such as applications, pg up and down, etc. A fucked keyboard is a deal braker for me, regardless of how good the laptop is otherwise. This time around when I  replace this laptop, I want to opt for a high end system, likely a desktop replacement or gamer pc, and see if I can get better audio or still get a good keyboard.

@EnesMan I miss that too.  I think the thin and light thing has gotten a bit out of control, we've lost so much in the rush to make laptops feel like tablets.  Anything under 4 pounds and 14 inches wide is perfectly portable IMO, and I'd rather not have to pay a bunch of money to just have my battery replaced or RAM upgraded for the sake of another 8th of an inch reverse dick measuring contest between manufacturers.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

@joshknnd1982Yes I think that first one is definitely overkill, but also keep in mind that if you buy a more powerful laptop now, than it will probably still be usable in like 7 years as long as you treat it well, where as if you buy a lower powered but cheaper one than it may only be good enough for 4.Also, generally the more powerful the computer, (and that one looks like a gaming laptop or high powered workstation) the worse your batterylife will be and the heavier and thicker the machine, though you will probably get more port options and upgrading/repairing the computer will often be easier on a bigger laptop.I would suggest at least 6GB of RAM and an I5 8th generation or Ryzen 5 3000 series processor as well as an SSD of at least 128GB, but everything aside from that is all up to you.You shouldn't have to pay more than 750 USD for a machine like that at most, and if you are than your getting ripped off and should either wait for a big sale or try another manufacturer. If you want to watch lots of movies and shows, you can save money by buying an external hard drive or even a fast high capacity USB flash drive to store them on, or even a plan with a cloud provider, or just go with streaming services and avoid the issue altogether.Laptop Mag, Thom's hardware, and Notebookcheck are all resources I trust for getting good in depth reviews of laptops before buying, but checking customer reviews on retail sights like amazon from users who have had the machine for a while and have more than a single sentence to say is good too, especially if you run the page link through fakespot first.Good luck!@EnesI mean it is kinda impressive the sound they can get out of such small speakers using these technologies though, and I get that your gonna need thinner speakers as laptops get slimmer and lighter, but yeah it sucks for us, as well as for people doing audio mixing or home theater stuff.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

Well, that's why you can have larger laptops, not just for speakers, but for better cooling and thermals. But the sound coming out of those speakers the effects and such is just smoke and mirrors, and not real quality audio. I miss the sound of my old laptop, the satallite 1805, which had two massive several inch long and thick speakers, backed up with two woofers, holes in the case on the side of the laptop. In effect I had four, and the sound was so intense people could hear it several hallways  down even with the door closed in school when I turned it to  a little over half voluem. I was kind of scared to see what would happen at full volume.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

Well my two cents here. I personally would wait on buying a laptop, and get one of the new AMD Ryzen 4000 ones if you can aford it. The audio problem is one of the reasons I put off buying a laptop for so long. I would nedd a USB audio device to fuck with it, and  having to manually track down all the enhancements. I said this before, and I'll say it again. MS should enable a screen reader mode, when NVDA etc show themselves to ease of access, that disables any and all audio enhancements unles  configured otherwise automatically similar to how they added native windows support for audio ducking.I think the enhancements will grow more and more, and I have heard that alot of laptops are adding hardware based enhancements that use the sound card to do the processing rather than the software. I guess these are all to make the crappy tiny 2.5 MM speakers sound awsome.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

@NightshadePersonally I can deal with it so I haven't looked into the specifics much but unless it's just a surface application over top of the regular drivers that you can simply disable at startup through "MS Config" and or "services.MSC" than messing with it could be really risky.Blind people; who rely on screen readers, messing with their audio drivers is usually a recipe for disaster unless they have a tech savvy sighted person available. But if you are confident enough to mess with sound drivers (having an external USB audio device as a backup helps here) than I'd grab your sound card's exact model number from "device manager" and go find some generic drivers for it from the manufacturer to replace the Dell one's with. That's not something I really want to explain how to do though (it's not always simple) and I don't want to be responsible for messing up your computer either, so I would suggest using Google and double checking any info you see.@MitchHmm, interesting.   Keep in mind that I was talking from a Windows 10 point of view, but if that's what you've got already than I'm guessing your particular drivers just don't support that feature. In which case you might need to go through the dreaded MAX audio control panel of inaccessibility and broken dreams to turn things off, (which things exactly I'm not sure, but Google probably does). I would suggest using Aira and hopefully having a USB audio device on hand just encase things go totally to shit, which they probably won't as long as your patient and know your way around Windows a bit, since you should be able to undo anything not on the driver level pretty easily with sighted assistance.Sorry guys I wish I could give you more, and maybe someone else knows something I don't, but audio has gotten so complicated on modern laptops and every manufacturer and even some model lines do something slightly different.

@Mitch3 Dell laptops in the home here, and I know what your talking about. To fix the issue, type "sound set" into the start menu and press enter. After that screen loads, hit tab once and pres enter on the device properties link next to your output device, which should be speakers/headphones.In the properties page, find the Combo box that mentions spacial sounds, and make sure that the (off) option is selected.Next, tab to the related settings and press enter on the additional device properties link.Once in the additional properties dialogue, press control plus tab until you get to the (advanced) tab, then find the check box that says signal enhancements and make sure it's unchecked.Press the apply button and enjoy.

I have a Precision 3520, and Dell's forced "audio enhancements" basically make playing audio games almost impossible. They may  a good company, and if anyone has any ideas as to how to turn this off, but I wouldn't suggest Dell after my experience with their audio.

Re: buying a new computer soon, suggestions

Wow, I sure wanna know where someone could get a laptop with 16GB ram plus that hardware for 1000 USD If you only want to brows the internet and play audio games, you definitely won't be needing powerful hardware.I would look at the HP pavilion range, they have decent enough laptops without a dear price tag.I would look for an I5 just to be on the safe side, just avoid Celerons and Pentiums like the plague!
