About accessibility, caring years ago is better than never. And this year alone they have made massive improvements. I tried discord on iOS last year, and I just couldn't get use to it. In February it was usable, but still had some work to be done. Around June is when the iOS app had finally become decent enough to use. Yes it still needs work, but within less than a year, it has gone from a nightmare, to decent. As for its accessibility vs skype, whatsap, facebook, and so on. Discord is built for complexity. Skype, whatsap, messenger, are built to be simple. Facebook is just bloted even for normal users. But they do a good job with making it readable, and even with picture descriptions, or maybe that is apple's part. Instagram, well it isn't as usable as discord. The interface with voiceover is not friendly.The other thing I love about discord is how every platform is almost the same. And that's another reason why their accessibility gets another plus 1. If you know how to use discord on 1 platform, you have the basic idea of how to use it with another platform. Honestly that's what helped me get use to it on the iPhone. I knew the computer layout, and so the iOS screens were much easier to get to use afterwords. Yes the tab bar at the bottom, and the toggle drawer are different, but that's to be expected. Here's why it didn't get off to a good start.First of all, y'all wanted to start with skype. That's already a death blow. Good luck talking about multiple games, of different genres with different parts that are accessible, all in one huge ass chat.Second, y'all wasted a whole week to decide should we go with shitty skype, or the best social platform ever, discord. Seriously. A few cry babies set y'all back a week. And look at the end results. More than 85% was discord! Guys it is pointless. Nothing compares to discord.Third, the rules weren't already thought of. Of course this doesn't mean, oh here are the rules and they are final. But there was no draft. At least have a draft or outline before just asking about this. Some criteria could be, what games are allowed, what counts as accessible, how open is this group and what will the requirements be to join, etc.And fourth, the original poster is very busy, and despite that, no one has taken the initiative to make the server for them and say, hey we're going to get started, join us when you can.I'm not trying to be harsh, well except for the discord reason. I am just trying to say, this wasn't off to a good start. But, no worries, that can be fixed. You guys already know which platform to use, and there is already a server built. If the original poster is ok with it, he can send someone the invite link and temporarily transfer ownership, so that at least things can get started rolling. Once more people join, it will be easier for more people to discuss the rules and all agree on an outline. And they can take it from there. I've personally never had it jump around or lose focus on the PC app. I have had it do that on the IOS app, which I almost never use any more. That use to be a huge problem on IOS where if you accidentally scrolled down too far, you'd find yourself jumping back to the middle of the conversation. It was extremely frustrating.Like I said before, I just treat it like a web page. I use headings, the comma key to jump past blocks, ctrl+home to get to the top. The only place I have any sort of complaint is how selecting a server works. But, if you learn ctrl+k and what hash and bang do, and know the name of the server or channel you're trying to get to, it's not that bad. Re: linking up with blind video gamers I thought Discord wasn't that bad either. Then I tried to read messages in high-traffic channels. Oh my god it's terrible, focus jumps around everywhere. Skype feels native, TT is native, but Discord feels clunky. That's about all of it. They are working on that though, to give them credit. Keyboard navigation is a thing now through message lists, but it doesn't read the messages. Once that's fixed, it will be better. All this back and forth about Skype, TeamTalk, and Discord brings back bad memories of pre Trillian where there were friends on Yahoo, friends on AOL, friends on ICQ, friends on MSN, and no one wanted to jump off their favored chat client.I wouldn't even consider loading Skype back up just for one user group to clutter my already cluttered task bar.I think if the naysayers would just give Discord more than a half-second's chance, they'd find it's not that bad. Don't just load something up, say "I'm not an immediate savant at it," then declare it terrible.There are some issues with it for sure, but the developers are not ignoring our community. I've been using it for a year or so for Dungeons & Dragons and I've gotten use to its interface and I don't even use the hot keys. I just use normal website navigation. It may be me who is having the issue because noone else browses servers this way and simply joins them through other means. Not all servers will be listed through other media like youtube or reddit. But it's misleading to say it's fully accessible when one can't access the full list of servers through the app without a workaround, again unless I'm missing something which noone has pointed out yet.@67, there definitely does not have to be a blind client for everything. Better to work with developers as best we can to get as much accessibility out of the base client so we can stay up to date. A list of servers comes up, probably about 10-15 of them, and then underneath it it it says there are more communities out there and a try searching for them button. Yet when I click on the gaming category, for example, I only see the same results that appeared initially. There can't be only ten public servers for gaming... so something is up with refreshing. Same thing when I click on any other category. IF there are more results, the discord window is not showing them. And I have no doubts some people include discord links in their other social media, I've seen it. What I'm saying is that the fact that I can't search for other servers and only have access to a few is very odd... and to me, it's a serious accessibility glitch. Maybe not to others, though.Disclaimer: This post wasn't meant to reject your thoughts, it was helpful. It may be me who is having the issue because noone else browses servers this way and simply joins them through other means. And on the contrary, there are tons of servers for general topics, which is why I'm searching through the app. Not all servers will be listed through other media like youtube or reddit. But it's misleading to say it's fully accessible when one can't access the full list of servers through the app without a workaround, again unless I'm missing something which noone has pointed out yet.@67, there definitely does not have to be a blind client for everything. Better to work with developers as best we can to get as much accessibility out of the base client so we can stay up to date. This is something I haven't gotten to work, as I can only see four or five results. And again, using NVDA's focus mode in the windows app doesn't seem to work well as nothin reads and I either have to revert to browse mode or object navigation. Aside from the occasional problem here and there, I can use it perfectly.To switch servers, just ctrl+tab through your servers. For switching channels, alt+up or down. Re: linking up with blind video gamers I've been using Discord for several months now, and it's fully accessible on mac, and now iOS as well. There is only a small problem on mac with the list of servers, but simply disable quick navigation, press down arrow or up arrow and you will be browsing the list. Hit enter on a server and it will take you there. Everything else navigates correctly and is perfectly labeled.Obviously I prefer Discord to Skype, the former is much better for organizing something like that. Also, I haven't used Skype for years.The idea of creating a community of blind gamers focused on mainstream games seems great to me, I hope it succeeds and we can enjoy together. Like several here, my interest in audio games has been waning fastly for some time. For me, the future is in accessible video games, and being able to play with all kinds of people, not just our small community of audio games. The best thing to do is get a link, click it and it can be navigated to by hitting shift k I believe. But in my experience discord works fine.
