The issue now is the best permanent solution. Should I connect a wire
with an RCA jack to the Squeezebox digital coax output and connect the
other end to the Nait's ground prong, or is there a better way?
The interconnect from Squeezebox to Nait is a phono-to-DIN cable,
right? Question: is the DIN plug a metal bodied one? (A lot of cables
made for use with Naims have locking metal DIN plugs that can easily be
opened up). If yours is like that type, then you might want to open it
up and connect the centre pin to the metal body, which I'm assuming
will be connected to the Nait's casework (and therefore be grounded).

Alternatively, as Patrick suggested (and probably a less fiddly
operation): you could open up the Nait itself and connect the centre
pin of the input socket to the casework. There might even be a more
convenient place on the main board to hook into the ground plane.
Ideally you want to do this as an easily reversible mod.

It's a long time since I took apart a Naim amp, but they always used to
have simple screws holding the case together, inside the rubber feet.
You could loosen one of those screws then tighten it back up with a
wire captured underneath, then connect the other end of the wire to the
outer ring of a phono plug, and plug it into the Squeezebox's COAX
digital output (with nothing connected to the centre pin of the phono
plug).

Another option would be to buy a 5-pin DIN plug from somewhere like
Radio Shack (even a cheap plastic-bodied one will do), and on the
inside connect the centre pin to the metal sleeve. Then put it back
together and just plug it in to a spare DIN socket on the Nait.

But if you find the Nait is really easy to open up, it should be very
simple to insert a wire between one of the -ve input socket pins and
the (grounded) chassis. That gives you a much neater installation,
because it's all internal to the Nait.

With all due respect, just make sure the slimserver settings are
identical and try the test blind. If server configuration
variations(OS, CPU, memory, hard disks, etc.) were really changing the
bits going over TCP/IP, then we would have much larger problems than
audible variations with the Transporter, as TCP/IP networking would be
unreliable.

Make sure none of the Slimservers are doing any type of transcoding or
bitrate limiting. If the slimserver settings are the same, and you are
streaming identical files, then it is extremely unlikely that there is
any audible difference.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Hum?

2007-05-22 Thread AndyC_772

Maybe there's actually a fault in the amp - the case is meant to be
earthed, and somewhere inside there's a piece of circuitry that relies
on this connection being present - but in your case that connection is
missing.

That could explain the hum, and the fact that joining the SB ground to
earth fixes it, and also the fact that joining the SB ground to the amp
chassis doesn't.

Next step: try connecting the chassis of the amp to earth and see if
the hum goes away then too.

(I presume, of course, that you're connecting to a bare metal point on
the chassis - right?)

The problem isn't that the grounds aren't common - they are, but that
in this installation, none of the grounds are actually connected to the
mains ground. In other words, the whole setup has a floating ground.

Why is this a problem? Well, the signal that is reproduced (and
amplified) in the system is the difference between the ground and the
actual signal. The ground should nominally be at 0V. But if it's
floating, and if there's any 50/60Hz ripple on the 0V side of the power
supply, then that ripple will be treated as signal by the amp. Therefore
it needs to be shunted to a real ground (eg. via the mains ground) to
eliminate the ripple. My experience with the stock Squeezebox power
supply is that it does seem to have a fairly high degree of mains
ripple.

Traditionally, it's the amp that tends to be grounded, and other
components are grounded via the amp. It would seem that Naim amps are
peculiar in this respect, expecting the source component(s) to be
grounded.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Review in Hi-Fi News (UK)

2007-05-22 Thread darrenyeats

Guys,
Here's an update. To recap I am comparing the SB3 and my Monarchy unit
being used as transports. I use an external DAC.

Loudness levels
---
I did buy the SPL meter from Radio Shack whilst I was in the States.

The SPLs via the SB3 and Monarchy transports were identical (using a
multi-tone signal, octave spacing from Stereophile Test CD 3). Not
surprising. So we can rule that out.

Mains supply

On the power supply side I have improved the mains filtering.
Subjectively I think it's helped the sound all round, but the gap
between the SB3 and Monarchy remains. Seems the jury's out on the power
supply issue (see JLM's last post and thread SB3 and external DAC -
views) and I don't have the time to go there without knowing it's
going to solve it.

Digital cable
-
I haven't tried a different digital cable yet. I've been reading
several other forum threads on this site and it seems the jitter
debate is very alive (see thread SB3 and external DAC - views). I'm
not confident enough that a new cable is going to help the SB3 with
jitter more than the Monarchy. I know my current cable is a decent one,
so although improvements might be possible I don't feel it will cancel
the gap in performance between the SB3 and Monarchy, which is my
concern.

To repeat, the differences are subtle:

I think the Monarchy allows the little details to just sit there and be
appreciated. The SB3 reproduces those little details when I listen -
it's just that I sometime don't notice them until I've first heard the
same passage on the Monarchy. The point is that instruments are better
separated in the soundstage, meaning the brain can recognise the
individual sounds with less effort. The Monarchy seems to have a
deeper, wider and less forward soundstage.

The Monarchy sounds darker, but this isn't just tone - it has a
cleaner, quieter and more dynamic feel, the canvass of little notes is
quieter allowing the transient louder notes to stand out more vividly.

The Monarchy's bass is more dynamic and has more low-end slam too.
(Ultimate frequency extension was measured as very slightly better
using the LF test tones.)

The Monarchy sounds better on transients - the leading edges of notes
sound crisper and more real.

In the end the differences are subtle. Each aspect of difference
stretches the capabilities of my ears - and more likely, the rest of
the hifi system - to characterise precisely in isolation. It would be
easy to go into subjective ravings which certain kinds of hifi
journalists seem to love, but I'm trying to be as careful as possible.

I am very sure that in a less resolving system the differences would be
lost, maybe entirely. On the other hand, in a more resolving system (and
I admit the newest component in my system is 10 years old - see previous
post) they would no doubt be a big problem.

I don't know the reason still, but perhaps it can be put down to
jitter. I believe Monarchy have some reputation around low jitter.

Thanks, Darren

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Hum?

2007-05-22 Thread AndyC_772

More to the point: why should it matter if you have a floating ground?
Earthing the chassis helps (though is not essential to) pass EMC and
safety tests, but there need be no other connection between signal
ground and Earth.

Thinking about it: most of my components don't have an earth connection
at all - they use 2 pin mains cables and plugs. Certainly I could easily
put together a source component, amp speakers and have no earth.

Needless to say, they work fine. No hum. (Well, apart from my subwoofer
- but that IS earthed, so I think the hum is from a ground loop).

It still sounds to me, though, as though the Naim amp is relying on
signal ground and chassis ground being the same thing at some point,
but for some reason, they're not.

That's probably because it has a power supply with significantly less
mains ripple. I hate to say it, but the stock SB power supply does seem
pretty bad in this respect. The kitchen system in my house is an SB2
feeding a pair of powered (but ungrounded) multimedia speakers, and
they'd been used successfully for years with other sources. It was only

Please see my previous post.

You only want a ground to earth connection in one place in the system,
and Naim started at a time when t/ts were the prevalent source, and
they normally had ground and earth connected. Naim simply continued
this with their CDPs.

FWIW, I think the 'correct' place to make the connection is at the

Slimserver will send whatever file it is asked to play to the Squeezebox
in its native format. Windows has nothing to do with it. SB3 outputs
48khz, Transporter outputs 96khz to an external DAC if required. When
playing 24/96 recorded files the SB3 will drop every other sample.
Rather crude but it seems to work.

No.

Music is sent to the squeezebox as a data file over a TCP/IP network,
not as any kind of digital audio stream. If that file is, say, a WAV

Linn Records - http://www.linrecords.com

Linn has a few of their albums available in 24/96 format for download.

Classic Records - http://www.classicrecs.com/
Hires Music - http://www.hiresmusic.com/homepage.html

The DAD HDAD recordings have 24/96 audio that I have extracted using
DVD Audio Extractor. In another thread, it was claimed that it could
not be done with DVD AE, but I think that's just older versions;
according to the DVD AE website they now fully support 24/96 extraction
and 24-bit WAV format.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Volume on SB3

2007-05-22 Thread Anne

Dont quite understand you last 3 lines there, why would Inguz make it
sound like mp3 ?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, this is a bit different, but still
concerns volume...

I responded to this thread :
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32271
and I know there is an agreement that the lower the volume the better
sound more or less. But, here we are simply talking output from the
analog outs on SB3, and I dont understand why this is so low
With my headphones I can easily turn the volume all the way up
listening to a ripped cd via the SB3 6.0 volt ( ?? ) analog output,
with my Philips dvd 963SA, and its 2.0 volt output its enough with a
12.00 setting on the volume.
Seems like the SB3 doesnt put out more than 0.5 volt to me.

i currently have a laptop with a 40gb hard drive. i want a squeezebox3,
but want all my music as FLAC first. SO, i need more space. simple, you
may think. buy an external hdd. however, my laptop is so bad (dell
inspiron 1100) that is barely has the processing power for EAC and rips
take 1/2 hour. until eventually they ake over 1 hour, becuase of the
heat.

What should i do? i need it to serve my squeezebox. Adive on getting a
cheap pc jsut with fast processor and big hdd. nothing else neccessary
(except a cheap monitor to do the rips.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] modding digital of squeezebox (boldercables)

2007-05-22 Thread needanamp

but i dont understand, because i thought digital out was simply passing
out the 1's and 0's, so its not likely to pass out 1, and 0's with any
mistakes without the mod, so why mod? and its not like you can get
better 1's and 0's is it?! (i assume not - since its a digital signal -
but knowing me, im totally wrong)

thanks for andswering.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 'dirt cheap' music pc

2007-05-22 Thread Mark Lanctot

Do you have the skills/inclination to build one yourself? If so it can
be fairly cheap.

In regards to EAC, the CPU intensive task is the encoding. Ripping
itself is easy and is constrained by the optical drive - optical drives
in laptops are notoriously poor. The current encoding champ is the
Intel Core 2 Duo. I have an E6600 and it's incredible - FLAC at -8
(maximum compression) and LAME -V 6 one after the other - both tasks
combined at THIRTY SECONDS per track! This is more than twice as fast
as my retired Pentium 4 2.8 GHz and four times as fast as the AMD Duron
1.2 GHz in my secondary PC.

Core 2 Duos have come down in price and you can get the low-end ones
for not all that much. Motherboards for this can be pricey but I'm
using an economical ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA - the nice thing about it is
that you can reuse your old DDR RAM and your old AGP card.

But if you don't want to build a PC yourself, the lower-end Dells ought
to do. If you can find one with an entry level Core 2 Duo you'd be all
set. As long as you go for a desktop you'll get a better optical drive
than you would with a laptop, so you would be covered there as well.

How cheap do you want?
I suggest you look at your local craigslist and just buy a working,
used PC.

Compression takes a while, so just allow for it.

Once you have the used PC, just use it as the Slimserver and use
your laptop to control it.

Depending on your taste and experience, make sure the used PC includes
Windows, or install a Linux distro on it.

The 1's and 0's are not the problem - converting them to analogue is!
The SB3 has an onboard DAC and built to a price. External DAC's usually
have no such limitations.

Sorry, I meant *if* mp3 is adding an artificial bass boost he could use

of having to stream a .wav sized file.

I know there is an agreement that the lower the volume the better sound

When I use my T-amp and Fostex speakers with the Sb3 analog out at full
volume, 12 o'clock on the T-amp is WAY too loud, so I personally
wouldn't want them to have a higher voltage.

I thought the agreement was that the higher the volume on the sb3, the
better the sound- more or less. Or were you talking volume in general?
(in which case I still say the louder the better!)

Eh, I am a bit embarrassed but honestly dont have a clue as to what
happened, I withdraw my statement on the volume completely.
I got my HD580 Precision headphones in the mail today, and I plugged
them in my Bryston. I then lined up Eva Cassidy on the SB3, and the cd
player so I could compare, and the sound was very low on the SB3
compared to the cd player.
Just now I was listening again, and now the volume is the same ! I dont
understand because I didnt change a thing, I just slept an hour, so
sorry again.

Hi Topa,
Thanks for your comments re my unit.

The shield position was arbitrary. I could have moved it closer to the
display or viceversa.

The enclosures are standard models from diyenclosures.com. They happen
to be a near perfect fit!

Thank you very much CardinalFang!

Yeah, I guess this would have been the ideal Transporter. Minimalistic
yet functional. No buttons or knobs on the front panel.

As an audiophile, this is the way I like my electronics. I'm sure many
fellow enthusiasts would agree.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linn Records now doing FLAC

2007-05-22 Thread Ron F .

Oooops ... Update...

dBpowerAMP updated their codecs yesterday and fixed their FLAC 96kHz
bug! The application can now process 96kHz FLAC files without any
problem. To resample a 96kHz FLAC to 48kHz, download the Music
Converter DSP Effects R1 which was released on May 19th, and install
that after installing dBpowerAMP. Use the DSP resample tool and
recode FLAC to FLAC. It works well.

So, Adamslim is right - it is easy to do all this in dBpowerAMP - great
program.

In addition, Audacity released a new version as well on May 18th. They
also had a FLAC problem but theirs was related to handling 24bit files
- and that has been fixed!
