Actually what you need is a 'New Musical Experience' to sort you out. My
system was being to sound anonomous, due to me listening to the same old
CD's again and again ... Then I saw Adrian Belew in concert, thought wow
... must find some of his CD's .. bought a bunch, played them, and all
of a sudden my system sounded the buisness again.

Try listening to Fishhead by Belew, nice and loud, that will make you
fall back in love with your system :-)

In case of total Belew failure, listen to Zappa in New York!

It comes with it. And it's available in the sb3 menu. You might want to
visit the website. http://inguzaudio.com.

I put up a little guide, based on my experiences installing it, about a
year ago on this forum.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29489highlight=inguz

It's a bit of a pain doing the measurements, but after that, you just
run some software from a command line, and voila, you have filters.

It's going to cost you ~200 to get a mic, stand, and preamp, but then
you have it forever. I would imagine you'd have to get a mic, stand and
preamp to properly set up the behringer eq.

I'm not sure what you want to control in Inguz, but it adds a menu to
the SB3 that lets you select different correction filters and adjust
other audio settings using the SB3 remote.

Using the Inguz plugin to Slimserver does require a fairly hefty
computer (mine is a 5 year old 2.4GHz pentium and runs around 50% CPU
usage).

You will also need a measuring microphone, probably a microphone
preamp, and room measurement/filter generation software like DRC.

I think you will find the Behringer much easier to configure, but I
think you will get superior results in the long run with Inguz.

If I were starting over again, I think I'd use the Behringer for the
first year or so. I've been using room correction devices since 2001
and it takes quite a while to get comfortable with the subleties of
room correction.

The ease of use of the Behringer would allow you to experiment with
correction much faster than spending time learning and refining the
various skills needed to use Inguz.

Kim

I owned three TacT preamps, which are audiophile versions of the
Behringer units. IMO, adding external digital processing and another
component is guaranteed to limit sound quality in other areas besides
frequency response.

If your FR issues are enormous AND correctable by DSP, the benefits
might outweigh the problems.

Inguz works within the mystical realm your bits already live it - the
computer. It's a Very Steep learning curve to get it figured out and
it's difficult to get a handle on what's happening with it since
there's no graphic interface.

So, convenience-wise it's not good. Performance will be much better
however.

If you have FR problems, try the Inguz semi-parametric EQ. It might
fix you right up in an hour with no equipment necessary.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] ripping SACDs

2007-11-07 Thread opaqueice

In case anyone has an SACD library and wants to do this, it turns out
there's a not-too-difficult method. You need an SACD player that can
output PCM through an HDMI connection. (I think most SACD-capable
universal players will do that, but I haven't tried it myself to be
sure. Oppo sells one for ~$150.)

Then, with an HDMI to DVI + SPDIF converter box (like
http://www.hdtvsupply.com/hdmi-to-dvi-digital-audio-converter-adapter.html),
you should be able to split off the SPDIF audio, send it to a computer
soundcard, and record a hi-res WAV file.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inguz or Behringer DEQ2496?

I'm wondering if there is an inherent performance advantage to one over
the other if I wish to implement room correction with my SB3.

Now, purely from a convenience standpoint, the Behringer might be a
better fit for me (but I must confess I don't know much about Inguz).
With the behringer, I can control it from my listening room. With
Inguz I'm not so sure as my PC is in a different room. Would it be

So I guess I'm asking for input from folks in terms of both performance

measurement mic, which cost me all of $40. My mic stand was $30 at Mars
Music.

However, inexpensive has to show somewhere. While the Behringer ECM8000
generic published response curve is pretty good (within a dB or 2),
ECM8000's that have been individual measured show up to 10dB deviation
in the treble. Rather than spending $50 to have mine calibrated I just
purchased a $200 pre-calibrated measuring mic (a LinearX M31) for use
with my $200 E-mU 0404 USB sound card. There, I just spent more than
the Behringer EQ AND the ECM8000!

The primary benefit of room correction is in the bass, say below 500Hz.
If you limit the EQ to below that, it doesn't matter what the ECM8000 is
doing at 8kHz.

I find that 4 or 5 shots of whiskey causes a STUPENDOUS reduction in

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] HDCD ripping

2007-11-07 Thread lucas72

I've read (most of the) thread here. Thanks everybody it was very
interesting.
A question raised in my mind. I converted an existing flac to wav using
flac.exe, then using hdcd.exe I generated a 24bit wav file, as per your
suggestions. Now the question is: can I use any standard method
(flac.exe from dos, EAC, Fubar2000) to convert back to flac? Or is
there any particular parametes I have to set. I'm asking because using,
for example Fubar, I see that at the end of the process the FLAC file
its just of bunch of Kb larger then the initial FLAC file. Is that
normal?
Ciao

No! - my TACT works only on the bits - it has no ADC or DAC in

I understand. This is the same way I ran my TacT units. Regardless,
TacT upsamples the signal to 24/96 asynchronously and reclocks
everything. Even in the pure digital realm this comes at a price. I
eventually found transparency to be limited and went away from the TacT
units.

Now I have a Lamm tubed preamp and am much happier, even though the
rest of the system is the same.

The semi-parametric is included in the standard Inguz install. It's a
slick deal. Being able to move the frequency centers makes it much
better than old-school tone controls.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Stabilizing the SB3

2007-11-07 Thread tyler_durden

I am depressed. I will never know the joys of the huge improvements
due to sorbothane balls, sticky dots, wood pucks, green pens, CD
demagnetizers, $500 power cords, etc., that bring such transcendent
bliss to so many serious audiophiles. It's all because I learned the
meanings of adjectives from dictionaries rather than audiophile
magazines and advertisements. I blame my parents! If only they had
steered me toward the right literature when I was a child I might not
suffer this loss of sensibility today. I wonder if I can get a
handicapped parking permit...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Volume regulation of transporter?

2007-11-07 Thread thomsens

I finally decided to connect my transporter's balanced outs directly to
my Linn Artikulat Aktiv powered speakers. I think it sounded great
regardless of the fact that I used the digital volume to control the
volume for the speakers. I never had to go much lower than -25db and
if I did, it would be such a background level that sound quality would
not be important. I was easily able to get to -15 to -10db when
listening. If it could sound much better, I don't think I was missing
much. If someone is debating this setup, I'd probably simply try it
first before spending time and effort on some analog attenuation
inline. My pre-amp does give me the ability to attach other sources to
the speakers with minimal sound degradation, but I think the TP direct
would be a perfectly acceptable solution if I didn't want the
flexibility of other non-digital sources.

Did you try moving the SB3 off of the vibrating machinery? Try

If you do use an external A/D converter running at 44.1kHz, you need

 inputs
(eg. Soundblasters) resample the incoming stream to their internal
clock speed (48kHz), and since they do it in real time, tend not to
make a particularly good job of it.

I forgot about that, lots of cheap stuff works only at 48k sampling,
 and
 then you do
a crude and rude conversion to 44.1, which never works for quality.
 The
 answer
is simple, make sure it really does 44.1k.

Lately I've been using a Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202 USB soundcard going
into my laptop. It samples at 44.1 I believe. It's much better than my
soundblaster was.
