Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Squeezebox Touch Mod

2011-11-03 Thread Jacky

First of all, sorry for my bad English.
I just want to share some of my impressions regarding SPDIF jive_alsa
value settings:
By moving back forward of those, I settled finaly to
SPDIF 45 jive_alsa 45 for best musical balance and coherence over the
whole frequency spectrum.
Suggested jive_alsa 55 by many of you sounds too soft, especially in
the bass region while in the other hand improves some airy which I
found
a little strange, soft and less correct for my set-up.
SPDIF below 45 goes to the dark side, while over it starts to sound
thin by loosing gradually bass the more you higher this value.
Bass becomes more contour by switching back to jive_alsa 45 and also
the treble (hi-hats,...) are more defined.

This my impressions on those settings and may be others for any
tasting.

Regards
Jacky / Vienna.

in soundcheck's blog he says maybe not and suggests that one not use

says he does something similar to dynobot's mods, but in a different

First off, I want to thank Klaus for his efforts and for sharing them
with the world. I've been delighted with the 2.0 toolbox and feel it's
brought by system to a level that I have never heard before. A donation
is on the way.

I did all the 3.0 installs except screen off, and sat down to a long
listen last night. To my ears, I lost liquidity and heft in the mids
and lost punch in the mid-bass. Things sounded more digital. I might
have perceived more details in the highs, but at a cost it seems. The
sound is more brittle. We're talking subtle differences, so I'm going
to leave the mods in place to get used to them for a few days.

Setup: Hardwired SBT Wyred4sound DAC-2.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

2011-11-03 Thread soundcheck

I'll fork into a new thread from here, if that is OK with you.

Of course a lot of interesting stuff discussed over here will get
lost over time.

Anyhow. Sometimes it's good to start over.

One hint.

Instead of rolling back certain features you should try to find certain
other bottlenecks. I did experience that you need to tune your system
over once you get a step further up the ladder (which has to be proven
for every single environment first obviously)

I and my little testgroup for example never experience XRUNS on 3400us
buffer. Would be interesting to figure out why this differs from box to

box over here. If buffers are over the edge things might get sharper.

If you do your testing report your experiences
make sure that you clearly communicate your toolbox settings.
If you e.g. run screen-on and wlan without tt -k results will be less
relevant in absolute terms.

I'll have a look at the SPDIF process.

P:S: I had a little outage on the blog an hour ago. I had to restore a
backup. Weired things might happened during that timeframe.

I left it at 40 intentionally (quite some time back though). I also

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0

2011-11-03 Thread soundcheck

Another finetuning subject is the buffer setting.

The closer we get to the system limits the more difficult it gets to
tune the instrument.

Some people won't get below 4000us without ending up into XRUNS.
Others run at 3400us without problems.
Which is strange. Over here I know of several systems, which also
run stable at 3400us. Let's keep an eye on that one. We might find
a solution.

Easiest is to tune your buffer size that it turns out best to you.

That buffer situation is known since quite some time of course.

First of all I want to thanx Souncheck for the passion and the

I used TT 2.0 with satisfaction for some time and I was waiting for
TT3.0 improvements.
The first impressions with TT3.0 in my system are not positive : the
sound is emptied , much more digital , too much highs. The sound is
more defined and detailed but the whole impression is something like
a little radio.

I'm not sure if going back to TT2.0 or trying to refine TT3.0 (spdif
process priority , buffer size , ).
I installed all the tt3.0 features except screen off and infrared
receiver off.
My system is : wired Touch , Naim DAC with XPS Teddy Pardo power supply
, Naim pre with Naim power supply , two mono Naim amps , Jean Marie

Bottom line I'm not saying that everything is 100% correct with the

Let see how things are developing. I also got quite some very positive,

NO - it should work. Maybe on the analog (port 1) though. USB might get
assigned to port 1 by default.

I'm still waiting for an USB interface to arrive. It should have been
here almost a week ago.

I'll then introduce USB DAC support (for those DACs which are working)
as soon as I have tested it.

TT3.0 does not do this on my sys, everything is bigger... but yes, I
think same tweaking might have to happen, as it's a little hot in the
highs now, but have not spent enough time, might just need some room
changes--

in TT2.0 i used ttbuffer at 2 cause it used less CPU I thought it

also I tried the priority change script, before the TT3.0 way--
thought it sounded brittle dumped it-- So I'm also gonna try

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0

2011-11-03 Thread cymbop

My thoughts at the end of the 2.0 thread:

So I am in agreement with some of you. Question: to uninstall the
daemon killer, will I need to restore factory settings and start over?
I'm definitely keen to tune the system to take it back to the sound I
was getting out of 2.0.

There seems to be as many people pro TT3 as against. Is it the fact that
people have had 1 year to get used to TT2 and suddenly things have
changed that they were not expecting?

Maybe time will tell and listening time will tell.

Presumably those people who were running TT2 can just revert back if
TT3 doesn't float their boat?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0

2011-11-03 Thread JohnSwenson

Hi Soundcheck,
on the USB front I have been working on a udev setup that consistantly
numbers all devices. Its going to need something in rcS or rcS.local
and since you are using that I would like to get it integrated in with
yours so they are not fighting each other.

A while back rgo posted a udev script which always numbered the USB dac
card3, but unfortunately the other devices were frequently also
renumbered. I know have a udev setup that always numbers the USB dac as
card5 and all the other devices (analog, digital and effects) always
have their normnal numbers no matter what. Its working great now for
booting with the USB dac plugged in, but hot plugging is not working
yet, I need a little more time for that.

It would also be cool to put in a system that could automatically
choose different alsa setups depending on what is plugged in, but that
is probably a next generation enhancement.

On the USB dac fron in general I still have not got it completely
figured out, I'm still getting ocassional xruns no matter what I do.
I'm starting to belive its down inside the low level USB driver, but
I'm not sure about that.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0

2011-11-03 Thread lovejoy

Many thanks for all of your efforts on TT3 Klaus. I've spent the evening
tweaking and listening and had some interesting findings:

I've been running TT2 for about 6 months and really enjoyed the
differences it brought over the stock touch. I particularly love the
sound of 24-bit recordings through it. Tonight I installed the TT3 mods
after a factory reset and applied all mods with buffer set to 3400. Like
others here I found it sounded quite digital, a bit forced, too hot, a
bit too in your face, but at the same time I was also aware that the
bass had tightened up and was really snappy and went lower with more
control. Nevertheless, to me it was not as musically enjoyable as
TT2.0, so I reverted for a couple of hours.

The bass in TT2 after going back really did sound quite flabby and
started to grate a bit so I wondered if a compromise could be reached.
One thing I always have preferred in TT2.0 was to have quite a high
buffer setting, particularly as 24/96 material tended to stutter quite
badly on pause/play with low buffer settings. I also found the sound
somewhat smoother and less fatiguing with large buffers so I thought to
try this on TT3.0.

So I did another factory reset and re-installed TT3.0 and weirdly,
before I even got the chance to change the buffer setting I was
convinced that it sounded better than it did the first time around.
That digital glare was gone and the sound was much more balanced. Maybe
this was just me getting used to the sound as it made no sense that it
should sound any different as the install method and settings were the
same as the first time around, although I'd be interested to hear if
anyone else experiences this.

Anyway, I went ahead and maxed out the buffer setting and later
increased the priority of the SPDIF output as you mentioned, and that's
where I'm at now. A good 3 hours of music later and absolutely LOVING
the sound. It's well balanced, that lovely tight and well controlled
bass is there. Detail levels are astounding: a real sense of looking
right into the recording. Engaging your method of fixing the volume at
100% seems to bring out more detail too, although I've not A/B'd this
to any great extent as yet.

With TT2.0 there was a real gulf between 16/44 and 24/96 recordings.
TT3.0 has made 16/44 that bit closer to 24/96 with a great big jump in
refinement.

I think it's going to be a weekend occupied with a lot of listening.
Many thanks again. A donation is on its way.

Rich

I've been away for a while, now back in the midst of all this
excitement!

First off, let me say that I absolutely adore what Klaus has done with
the Touch (and I'm talking only about his TT2.0) He basically opened
the box and gave us the ability to really enjoy music reproduction.

However, I hasten to add that only after applying dynaudio mods,
including the jive_alsa and spdif priority mods, have I experienced how
my Touch finally made it into the higher echelon of top end digital
transports. Right now, it sounds like a million bucks. It sounds so
good, that I'm overwhelmed with this superstitious feeling which is
holding me back from trying the latest TT3.0. I need a push, someone to
tell me that it's gonna be worth it.

I am of the opinion that a high end audio system is somewhat similar to
a well stocked wine cellar. The only way to make sure you get a good
bottle of wine is to let it sit there, aging gracefully. I know it's a
silly superstition, but my system is giving me so much pleasure right
now, that I feel as if it would be blasphemous to rattle its cage by
doing a factory reset and applying the TT3.0.

I honestly question that things could sound any better than they do
with TT2.0 and all the dynaoudio mods. Can someone reassure me that it
is indeed possible to squeeze even more music out of Touch?

Also, has anyone attempted comparative listen between TT2.0 with
dynaudio mods vs TT3.0 sans dynaudio mods? Any findings?

When I first initialized 3.0 last night, I received a quick error
message along the lines of unknown process. Didn't pay attention to
it, because tt -s reported things installed and working.

Tonight i used tt to do a reset and then reinitialized tt. No error
message this time. Set my buffer to 4000, enabled the volume lock and
killed the daemons.

I'm getting better results(fuller sounding) tonight. Not sure if that
error message related to something that was causing issues or it's a
placebo in my head.

Amazing! I love when I get proven totally wrong in this fashion.

So you're right, I finally got off my butt earlier this evening, did a
factory reset, upgraded firmware to 7.7.0, and then modified all the
settings on my Touch and on the squeezebox server, as per Soundcheck's
instructions, and then installed TT3.0. I also applied his vollock, and
finally killed deamon jobs (tt -k).

Set down for a critical listen and... wow! (insert your favorite
audiophile hyperbole here)

The first song I listened to was Papa Was A Rolling Stone by
Temptations. Right off the bat, I was blown away by the visceral
physicality of the opening bass lick. And then the Pandora's box opened
up -- the heavenly sounds of the strings and the never before heard
detailed and intricate cascades by the harp. Meanwhile, two funky
guitars with amazingly clear textures were barking from the left and
the right channel, respectively. So many previously unheard details now
emerged in crystal clarity.

And when the backing vocals kicked in (wherever he laid his hat was
his home...) I yelled in joy! Such realism, such musicality! These
singers are standing right there, in my right speaker, living,
breathing.

This mod is amazing, because it accomplishes the impossible: it
presents the sound that is at the same time both in-your-face and laid
back. Impossible!

I have a SHM-CD by Sade (refurbished, repackaged Japanese remaster of
Diamond Life), which offers amazing clarity and details. Still, I
found the overall remaster to be on a bit of a harsh side with TT2.0.
Now with TT3.0, any traces of harshness have disappeared, although the
very aggressive over-the-top pushy sound became even more prominent.
Only this time it's completely relaxed, unhurried, not nervous, and
(dare I say it?) analog-like.

I am now at a loss when I read people complaining how TT3.0 sounds
thin, digital, with leaner bass, etc. Quite the reverse, it now sounds
(on my system, at least), so much fuller, rounder, silkier, milky and
with unprecedented presence. Overall, as we keep moving from one
favorite song to another, my wife and I are consistently commenting on
how much more realistic, musical, fuller and deeper the bass now
sounds. Gone is all the boomines and messiness, and the only thing left
in the deeper regions is music driven by a very tight, taut and nimble
bass.

To me, the silkiness of the cymbals is just one thing among many that
is totally worthy of the price of admission. Plus, so many more
previously undetected details. Even during the loudest passages in
Thomas Dolby's I Scare Myself, I can now easily follow every tiny
little strum on the acoustic guitar. I can plainly hear the plectrum
cascading down the steel strings even during the very loud piano and
trombone solos. Amazing!

Thank you a million times, Klaus!
