Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Using a convolver in conjunction with LMS / PCP

2021-12-26 Thread bpa

I don;t know anything about Audiolens - I can only find references to
AudioLense

If AudioLense is the system then it looks like a user has been trying to
use Audiolense filters in CamillaDSP see
https://moodeaudio.org/forum/showthread.php?tid=4103

Having DSP within the ALSA environment would enable squeezlite based
player to leverage any non LMS developments (i.e. no LMS specific
development needed).

LMS internally only deal with 2 channels.
For any special audioprocessing - usually it is done by transcoding with
Flac in and Flac out as that is the only way for it to happens within
LMS.

However, within LMS it is the player which decode the audio stream data
into playable audio samples, and now that players such a PI have
reasonable processing power - it makes more sense to do any audio
processing on the player.

The simplest approach is likely to be some sort of ALSA based module as
there are altrweady generics (i.e. non LMS) examples audio processing
and equalising. ALSA can also deal with multi channel.

A similar question was before about CamillaDSP
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?113712-CamillaDSP and
therer is apost about how to route ALSA audio through CamilaDSP

I don't know inguz but those FileTypes look very wrong.

How are you playing the BBC R4 AAC stream ? If it is using BBCiPlayer

A good move for the future. If you use any internet services then latest
versions of LMS (7.9.2 onward) is nearly essential as it has better

It is odd to have no executables. Are you sure your nas is classified
as i386-linux ?

If it is a mainstream NAS /architecture - you may be able to use
compatible executables from the slimserver repository.

What type of NAS model etc and what version of OS ?

It will resample if transcode rules are working on your system.
Resampling will be done using sox and maybe flac. Your LMS system is
very old 2012 and sox and lms may no longer run. For example, if OS has
been update in the meantime the libraries for sox / flac may no longer
be compatible.

1.Check if LMS supplied flac and sox run on your system.
2. If they don't - update LMS
3.if you can't update LMS (e.g. NAS based) then see if you can update
sox and flac separately.

You could check if the noise is due to the USB GND & 5V power lines from
either device by either cutting the GND and 5V wires in a USB cable or
just putting thin slivers of paper in the USB socket at the outermost
edges where the GND and 5V pins are.

The USB signal are differential and since both devices are self powered
- no USB power should not affect USB operation.

cue sheets are a bit special but you should be able to send audio
without conversion to Flac. Be careful when reading the player.source
log - conversion only take place when you see a command line log with
the various application such as flac and sox with full paths detailed.
This can seem to be in the midst of other conversion attempts and so be
confusing.

No - LMS can understand WAV just that some more recent additions
(higher res, 32 bit setc may not be fully supported by players. If
format is not natioveky supoprtred by a player then LMS has to convert
but if no convert rules defined - LMS doesn;t know how to convert.

WAV is package format not an audio encoding - supporting WAV does not
means it supports all audio encoding within that packaging.

Your first issue is to determine what formats does squeezelite say it
natively supports (i.e. DAC capability is not enough but also audio
subsystem reporting back to squeezelite). Enable squeezelite logging to
find the formats.

"unexpected edn of stream" usually measn one part of the transcode is
not working but since you are using c3po - it could be something else.

C3Po does some weird/clever stuff and anybody using it should post on

LMS conversion to flac is usually for bandwidth but also it means more
time can be buffered in player and so result in less chance of
rebuffering.

IIRC 32bit wav fixed point is handled. Floating point is unusual - I
recall there have been a few time it shas comes rectnly and they seem to
related to DXD and user conversion of DXD file confused LMS. (example

It seems to imply that either
1. LMS has not understood the file type (drill down on the the track in
WebGUI to see what format LMS thinks the file is )
2. LMS does no have any rule to convert the format suitable for a player
(i.e. sox)

Enable logging player.source to INFO to get a log of how LMS is trying
to process the file.

Flac is a executable on the same system as the LMS. You can find it in

run the4 command from a command line (i.e. shell in Linux, Terminal in

IIRC the wifi signal strength comes from the chipsets and it is not

therefore the 2 numbers are not comparable i.e. 50% on SB2 is NOT the
same level as 50% on SBT. The signal strength is just to be used as a
guide when trying to get a better signal. However since 96kHz streams
play OK - wifi is not the issue.

However since the problem is only with 48kHz when coming from digital
and there is no problem with playing 48kHz through analog. It seems it
could be an incompatibility between SBT and DAC. The problems happens
with both optical and coax connections ? Does the problem happen with a
different DAC ?

It is a very strange problem.

If it is not incompatibility - then it is back to source.

Were the Flac files all created with the same application and compressed

If the OP takes a working 96kHz file and then uses it to create a 48kHz

Whether you get better audio is up for debate and your ears as many user

There is a space vs processing consideration. Send data in WAV rather

manipulations. So there could be significant CPU usage to handle this
doubling of data.

Which format requires least amount of CPU will depend on many factors
and issues such as whether the code has been optimised to prefer
receiving a compressed data format (e.g. MP3, AAC, Flac) rather than
WAV (e.g. expect to processed data and do a copy while decompressing)
may be a factor.

I take no position in the discussion - just feel that the current CPU
utilisation levels may be a result of a balancing act. The developers
spent a lot of time optimising the system - I suppose the ideal would
reduce CPU for all formats to an acceptable minimal level but there may
have been other sub goals such as ensuring screen updating (e.g. smooth
text scrolling).

I also expect Flac (especially 96/24 with high compression) to be more
CPU intensive than WAV but it need be not as big a difference as
expected. Ultimately, measurement should show which is more CPU
intensive and their relative performance.

 Wiki insert:
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a switching technique for
telecommunication networks. It uses asynchronous time-division
multiplexing,[1][2] and it encodes data into small, fixed-sized cells.
This differs from networks such as the Internet or Ethernet LANs that
use variable sized packets or frames. ATM provides data link layer
services that run over OSI Layer 1 physical links. ATM has functional
similarity with both circuit switched networking and small packet
switched networking. **This makes it a good choice for a network that
must handle both traditional high-throughput data traffic (e.g., file
transfers), and real-time, low-latency content such as voice and
 video.**

ATM technology is not relevant to domestic users. It is/was used by
Telecom operators in the backbone network where they had different
types of traffic which had to be transported over high speed links
(e.g. SDH/SONET). The nearest a domestic user will get to ATM is when
using ADSL as many ADSL connections terminate in a ATM based DSLAM.

As a technology ATM is now out of date and there are other backbone
technologies taking over.

I think a VLC based solution would be best for you. Plays a video stream
and also sets up an audio http stream (this avoiuds the conf file
stuff). So once running Tune-in Sc to http://hostIP:8000/audio.mp3.
You can change port number and name on VLC command to suit. The
command below shows a delays between video and audio of 2520 msec -
again change to suit. The audio will be streamed as 2 channel
192kbp/sec - again read up on VLC to get other options.

The following Windows command line

Code:

  C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe --sout
#transcode{acodec=mp3,ab=192,channels=2}

:duplicate{dst=display{delay=2520,noaudio},dst=std{access=http,mux=raw,dst=:8000/audio.mp3},select=audio}

You may need to experiment to find the command line on OSX.

If you have an SBC - I believe there is a applet which can be used to
control VLC.

They have only recently upgraded to 64kbits from 40kbits/sec. The
worldwide remit is to provide services accessible to all - so this used

The BBC have been doing private trials of multicast and higher rate

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Beginner's Basic Setup - Home Theatre or Hi-Fi

2007-12-27 Thread bpa

I think a carefully chosen Home Cinema system will meet your cabling
needs but it may compromise audio.

Home Cineman systems usually have
- DVD / CD player
- AM/FM radio
- Play Decode TV sound (e.g. Dolby Surround) from off-air/cable
signal if fed through Aux Phono input
- Digital Phono Aux input - this can be used for Squeezebox, DVD
recorder, Games console etc.

The Home Cinema/Theatre system audio will usually be set up for Movies
and it is not hi-fi but it may be adequate for your requirements.

Choose a LCD TV with at least two HDMI ports and a Home Cinema system
which uses HDMI.

There should be at least two independent Aux input - one for TV off-air
sound and one Squeezebox. On some system this is one Phono and one
digital (optical Toslink) input.

If Squeezebox is connected to digital input (Toslink) then Home Cinema
system is the DAC but the benefit you can play Audio DTS track (if you
have any).

If you want surround sound from SB using all 5.1 speakers from AUX
input - check the Home Cinema system supports this mode as some Home
Cinema systems restrict AUX input to 2 front speaker.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Buffering on the SB3

2007-01-30 Thread bpa

You could try the Network test plugin from the Sb which is used to
measure sustained throughput from a source - AFAIK buffering is not an
issue in this test.

Some measure of SB buffering can be adjusted from 3 secs to 30 secs
from the Slimserver menu.

I think a significant issue for streaming radio would be latency - with
live streams buffering helps but if packets are too late the buffer gets
depleted and eventually link stutters and breaks down.

Large buffers help delay this effect, but if the buffer is too large
then it is possible for packets to be held for too long before they are
read, acked and played and so you can get TCP/IP reset.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Buffering on the SB3

2007-01-30 Thread bpa

I think a 50msec changeover is a bit irrelevant to a TCP connections as
long as the basic comms link stays up. If there is a glitch which
results in packet corruption/loss, TCP will arrange retransmissions as
long as the TCP connections is maintained. If the retransmission can
occur such that the missing packet arrive in time, then there will be
no gaps in the audio.

If the changeover resulted in some loss of sync or similar which resets
the TCP connection then there would be a problem regardless of the
amount of buffering.

So if you are demoing that physical comms path can be changed (e.g.
onto a different fibre in a SDH ring) without
interrupting/breaking/resetting the TCP connections, the SB will be
ideal and the amount of buffering won't really matter.

Internet radio will not approach CD quality but many stations give you
choice of encoding. The quality of a stream depends not just on speed
but also how it is encoded.

Supposedly a 48kbps/sec AACplus stream is as good as FM and 128kbit/sec
MP3 - so speed isn't everything but it helps. Usually higher speed
streams have an associated subscription.

Picks a station with multiple streams and do a comparison test of the
different formats say with a www.Sky.FM or a www.Somafm.com station.

You can get AACplus to work by having Slimserver transcode
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?AACplus) and there are a few
higher speed AACplus which say their 96kbit/s or 128Kbits stream is CD
quality. The web site www.tuner2.com has

I think the BBC still wants to support Narrowband (dialup) users and

is why the new WMA based UK only services may have higher rates.

replacement for SW and before DAB for users where FM was poor and only
received LW/MW.

As a side issues - the encodings of the Listen Again programs are
different to the live streams.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Naim enters the music server game

Is using the number RS-232 on the network products some sort of joke by
the developers ?

RS-232 is the old modem standard 300-19.2k bit/sec.
