I feed both my Chord Qutest and DAVE via USB and find it works
flawlessly - it depends how it's implemented on the board.

I recently replaced my Khadas tone board with a Chord Qutest

it - I have a CXN 2 which is also very good , I can choose whether to
play using the CXN directly into my amp or to pipe it through the Qutest
- to be honest they are both so good I can't tell the difference

I bought one a couple of monthe ago and it's a superb piece of kit.
I believe you can set it up to work with LMS as a PnP player if you
install a plugin in LMS but I just installed Minimserver which works
very well with Cambridge Audio's Stream Magic app.
I have the CXN V2 piped to a Chord Qutest DAC but I have tried using the
CXN's DAC and it too is pretty impressive.
And it costs less than I paid for my Transporter all those years ago.

I think the Pi group have lost their way a bit - removing the full size
HDMI for one and adding two minis was a mistake in my book. Who will
want to run a dual monitor setup on a pi ? and yes I agree they run a
lot hotter than the other models. I've used a 3b+ as my LMS server and
player for years now without any problems. I'd be interested to know how
you use a Khados tone bar as I would like to try using another SBC (
FriendlyElec Nanopim4 v2) as a server and player and as none of the pi
DAC hats will work on them maybe a Khados is the answer. My motive for
using it is you can fit a NVME M2 SSD drive via a hat and that would
enable me to get rid of my external USB drive and reduce the clutter of
wires. Does the Khados simply plug into a USB port ?

source rather than as a music server feeding a remote device (the basic

offers a audiophile quality stand alone USB power supply for this
 device.

Mmm, I don't understand who they are trying to attract with this, I'm a
long standing customer of Meridian and they have always made very good
quality products for mid to high end markets - but the Director just
doesn't seem to fit ? As you mention USB power supply no RJ45 socket ,
doesn't say what media streamers it supports. Weird marketing on
Meridians part think I'll stick with the TF. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the explanation, I've been in IT for 40 yrs and the jargon

neighbor simply couldn't believe it and even asked if I'd added a
sub-woofer (as the Cary is known, among other things, for bass
extension). I have been using the transport of the Cary these days
since the result is better than using the digital inputs. I'll mess
around with the Transporter or other front end options at some point.

That list is not comprehensive or official. I'm sure we have members
here who prefer to believe that the Transporter is the best DAC ever and
if you are satisfied, then I have no argument. As for others looking
for far superior sound quality in all areas (transparency, freq
extension, transient speed, etc) and you have the speakers and amp to
provide the resolution, then the list is a decent starting point. If
you drop down a notch to the likes of the Cary 306, which remains among
the very best at under $10 grand, then you will still have quite an
amazing upgrade. The next rung up will require a bit of investment, but
prices may be coming down as Esoteric has recently reduced theirs.

It's an exciting time in digital.

Hi there, I also have a ReadyNAS , how do you find the performance of
the NAS , mine is better since I doubled the RAM but I wish I'd done
more homework before I bought it ' the fan noise would be enough to stop
me buying it now.

 requirements.
I use a T7 Home Server running Microsoft Windows Home Server Version 1.
It has been updated by Tranquil and has performed extremely well for me.
It is small and sits on a shelf in my office. It uses about 14-28 Watts
of power, dependent on what you are using it for.
I am not connected to the company; but I can say I am very happy with my
 server.

Thanks I will check everybody's recommendations.

for almost three years. It's on 24/7 except when I go on holiday or the

and a Duet via wifi, in various places at various times.

It's an excellent piece of kit, extremely well made, very durable. I
don't think you'd need one of the newer models, the Fit2 (like mine) is
still available and is just fine for LMS. It can do a lot more, LMS
 barely impacts on its cycles.

 I bought mine diskless and installed a 500gb 2.5 drive -- completely
foolproof, just slides into place. You then need to install an OS,
though -- you can get a unit with Linux pre-installed, but the drive
size is limited. I had a spare XP licence available, and used a cheap
external CD drive (that I already had) to install.

Under normal conditions I use it headless (without direct connection to
a monitor or keyboard) -- it's networked into my home network, and I
access it using UltraVNC (free) viewer (which allows remote control.
I put that in quotes because the Fit is sitting beside my main computer
monitor, looking dwarfish -- it's not directly connected to the monitor
and keyboard, but it could be and sometimes is when I need to do
something substantial -- but it's been many months since I last did
 that.

 Highly recommended.

 Ron

All sounds good, as long as it will run Linux its in the frame.

I ask because if you get a tiny nettop type system then you may be
forced to use an external hard drive (or drives). That's not a terrible
thing, but the extra cabling and wall wart can be messy and it somewhat
defeats the purpose of using such a small box for the computer itself.
If you need a lot of storage space then it means you'll have to use 3.5
drives, since 2.5 drives (which are quieter, cooler, a little more
expensive) are currently limited to 1 TB in size (about 2800-3000 CDs
encoded in FLAC). If you do need one or more 3.5 drives then IMO it's
best to get a case that can hold them internally.

I think 1 Tb would suffice my current collection is ~ 350gb and these
days I don't rip anywhere near as much new stuff as I used to

The only bad part of this board is that it only supports 4x SATA and I
had to use the PCIe slot for a SATA board. If I didn't use it as a

I have 6x WD RE4-GP 2T server drives setup with Linux software raid. I
have a small mirror setup for the root fs, 140G of space for the rest of
the OS and 100G for /home. Then the rest of the space (7T) is a raid6
volume for backups (crashplan of my family's laptops) and other media.

I also have an external USB-3 drive or two that I offline backup the
important stuff to, like my FLAC files.

Of course, none of this is audiophile related, except that I have my
audio system (Transporter, Revel speakers, Musical Fidelity amp)
 networked to it.

Thanks but that's overkill for my needs, I just need a quieter version
of what I have now. Thanks anyway.

If you want quiet, capable, and convenient you probably can't do better
than the Fit-PC line (www.fit-pc.com/web/). The Fit-PC computers are
also ridiculously small. They take 2.5 hard drives, which are also a
lot quieter than their 3.5 counterparts. Or if you have the budget, get
an SSD. And in the grand scheme of things, the Fit-PC is not absurdly
expensive. It's more than many other alternatives, but it is quite
 reasonable for what it is.

Hi Aubuti, do you have one of these units ? They do look appealing but
the graphics capability would be wasted with my setup.

be time to say goodbye to the old girl and buy something else. Anyone
know of a reasonable priced quiet device that runs SC well ? preferably

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Using TP wireless and wired ethernet

2011-10-29 Thread pkfox

Hi all, is it possible to have my TP connect to my NAS ( which has all
my music on and slimserver running ) via CAT5 and the internet via
wireless ? - I've just moved house and at the moment the only way I can
connect the NAS is by plugging it into the TP directly which I've tried
but it doesn't work - can't connect to server is the error message.
It's probably not doable as the wireless is on a 172.x.x.x ip address
and the NAS a 192.x.x.x address.

to get a brand new G08.2 for £1899.00 from Sevenoaks Hi Fi which is
about £500 below RRP - still sad to see the old one go though - any
suggestions as to what I could do with it ? ( keep it clean please )

 One quick question:

Does this problem happen with all CDs or just with CDs that you've
 burned yourself?

I ask this question because many older CD players do not read burned
CDs very well. If this is the case try burning the CDs at a slower
speed (say 4X) and see if that helps.

Of course if the problem is occurring with both burned and commercial,
i.e. store bought, CDs then follow some of the advice already given in
 other responses.

Hi there, unfortunately it happens with all cd's - with the exception
of one brand new one which it plays ok ! don't understand why ? all my

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Meridian CD player

2010-10-02 Thread pkfox

Hi All, I know I shouldn't really ask this question here but the wealth
of knowledge here is the best I've come across - My trusty 506 CD
Player has starting behaving badly - sometimes it wont play at all,
other times it jumps or sticks - basically it is unusable - Meridian
can't help as the player is now obsolete and they don't have any parts,
So , can anyone recommend a lens cleaner that they have used ? - I don't
want to ruin it by using a crap one - any other recommendations welcome
- again apologies for posting here but I can't think of anywhere else
that I trust. I use my TP as the main music source but my wife still
prefers to use CD's.

controller linked to that box, which would allow to program AV
controlling in a way similar to Logitech remotes, but integrated with
the rest of the home - press one button, and it not just turns on your
SB, amp, and selects input, but also turns off AC and dim lights. And
also can reduce TV volume in the next room so it won't disturb
listening, and turn off TV in kids room so they finally go to bed :)

Interesting, have you set it up yet (LinuxMCE) also, how can it
possibly turn off lights etc... ?

Wow, I wasn't aware speakers like that existed, so you're saying you
send a digital stream from the TP to the speakers and the speakers have

The ear test on the DAC60?

Well, I've had mine for a year so I think I'm qualified to comment.
The improvement in sound quality is very noticeable with the Lite DAC.
It basically turns the SB3 into a Transporter for a fraction of the
 price :-).
Actually, I've never heard the TP, but the SB3+DAC60 is so good I'm not
in a real hurry to upgrade!

Hi All, I too have been running a SB3 + DAC 60 for over a year now and
overall I'm happy with the sound except for tracks where cymbals are at
the forefront (tinny springs to mind ) but the best improvement I found
was ditching the wireless part and going hard wired especially the
Squeezenetwork performance

Sorry for jumping in here Patrick, but I have been thinking of
upgrading to one of your units for some time and would like to know if
you've heard a Transporter yet, and, if yes, how it compares with SB+

thanks

Good though the Transporter is (and I know I will be accused of bias

Both are of course, leagues ahead of the SB3.

Hello Patrick, thanks for your time, have you any plans to produce a
Transporter + ? (Where will it all end ?)

Question: What do you think about the new SD NAS device?

- Awesome! Where can I get one?
- Nice. I'll put that on my wish list.
- Not for me, but it sure is pretty.
- Lame idea. Have the SD folks lost their minds?

The readyNAS has an http based admin interface, just log on and you can

One thing - to get decent performance, you need to turn off library
statistics and I'd advise setting the Use RAM thingy to 3 - works
 well for me

(all im slimserver server settings / performance)

Hi there, I'm sure it's easy when you know how, but !, is it a case of
unchecking the slimserver checkbox and clicking on apply ?, I can't see
anything that states this starts and stops slimserver ( and I'm a
software engineer !)

many thanks

 Hi,

Just wanted to add my support for the NV. I imported a 1TB NV (with 2
wireless SB3) from SlimDevices a couple of weeks ago and have to say
it's an excellent piece of kit.

I'm still ripping my CD collection to FLAC (just over 500 albums so
far) and the NAS has never missed a beat. Like others I've turned off
statistics and album art, and I've increased memory to 3.

I don't have any problems with noise, although the NAS is set up in my
home office. I guess it might be a little too noisy to have in a
 living room though.

It's a shame that the NV doesn't support more plugins (AlienBBC would
be nice) but they will probably come along at some point.

All in all a 5-star purchase for me.

 Regards,

 NZ

thanks for that, I'll give it another shot - gives me some hope

'Ur[s Wrote:
uS']em, i would have guessed under 2 hours
 after advice from Siduhe, try:
 stopping the slimserver service
deleting the database file - browse to it (a hidden file - so be sure
to have folder properties set to view hidden files) at
 \\[insert NAS Name]\slimserver\.slimserversql.db
restart slimserver (late at night, before bed - or some other period of
server inactivity) and check back in the morning or a few hours later

 i have:

 ReadyNAS NV
 RAIDiator™ v2.00c1-p9 [1.00a014]
 SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 - 7135 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1

and it takes 11 hours for scan of 23,000 files (all MP3/FLAC and all on
the ReadyNAS - no playlists, no old file references, no shortcuts - just
 music and artwork)

sorry i cannot be more help - i'm not really that tech savvy

how do you stop the service when it's running on the NAS ?

'Ur[s Wrote:
uS']Database clear and rescan took 11 hours for 23,854 songs (mixed Flac
and MP3, about 170GB). Using ReadyNAS NV and Slimserver 6.2.2. This
creates a *.db file of 40.1MB.

I do not rescan often - with new albums, I Browse Music Folder to add
the album to the database (a useful tip.). I control using remote and
am happy with access speeds, no faster or slower than using remote with
Slimserver on my laptop. Again, I Browse Music Folder (I have a good
pyramid hierarchy - ABC/Artist/Album Name, with some exceptions to
differ singles from albums from bootlegs etc.)

If accessing from laptop, I use Moose on WinXP - which is very
responsive for database queries and browsing.

I use Tag Rename, but this is slow read/write to the NV - so I tag
all files on local drive and then transfer to NV. For the errant tags
that I miss, I can correct afterwards without much pain.

My only problem is accented characters and the like - I will have to
update to get these, but will after user experience of the newest
 firmware/slimserver update have been settled.

It is too loud for living room use, but this is well signalled in
advance in the Infrant forums and here.

I don't have much frame of reference, but am happy with my purchase -
it does what I want it to.

Hello there, PMFJI, I recently bought a ReadyNas NV and find it hangs
whenever I do a rescan, if I Telnet into port 9090 and try to get the
rescan status (rescan ?) same result. Also file transfer very slow ,
but it does play ok once it settles down. I'm using a Linux box to
transfer the data which you would think would suit it, what's that tip
on adding music by browsing to the music folder ? - this could save me
a lot of time if just adding one album

Just got my Lite 60 DAC from Hong Kong ( GR-Research ), $480US including
shipping to the UK, not bad in my book, never having used a DAC before (
apart from the obvious ) I thought the difference would be minimal at
best ( to non_dac_aware_ears ! ), but !, I am very impressed indeed,
pretty it ain't - but not ugly either , end result one almost redundant

might as well ask this as well ?, I've ordered a DAC Lite 60 which
should arrive some time this week, which output should I use (optical /

it's coax or optical from the SB3 and RCA's into the 551
