[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Lossless Downloads

2007-01-27 Thread Olav Sunde
There is an enhancement request filed at http://bugs.slimdevices.com for
this. See #4172.
As for the problem with WMA, I sent an e-mail to Linn Records asking if
they would offer FLAC for download. Here is the answer:
"..We will be offering Flac in the future, although I don't have a
schedule for when we will do this yet."

This is good news..

any converter appreciated which could turn those WMA lossless into
plain WAV 24 bit 96 kHz samples...(and upsamples 88.2 to 96 kHz)

24 bit 88 kHz? It shouldn't show that...

To transcode to WAV, set the checkbox then DE-SELECT the "WMA - WMA
(built-in)" box.

2007-01-25 Thread truckfighters

hi and thanks for the quick response!

slimserver runs on windows 2000.

tried the microsoft tool wmal2pcm.exe to convert the WMA to wav and it
worked (for the file).

but when playing the 24 bit 88 kHz (?) wav-file through transporter the
only thing I heard was terrible 24 bit pink noise!

on the computer, I have a the video lan client (VLC) player, which
played the converted WAV file.

transporter does not play the WMA lossless file even when set
conversion to WAV format in slimserver settings.

what the heck?

when I try to play the WMA lossless file with TP, the server shows an
windows error message box (german): Der Prozedureinsprungpunkt
"WMCreateReader" wurde in der DLL "WMVCore.dll" nicht gefunden.
this means something like the DLL file couldn't find the entry point or
something like that?

windows 2000 related?

I just upgraded from 6.5.0 to 6.5.1 but I don*t think thats the issue?

any other tool than the microsoft tool to convert wma lossless to plain
WAV?

thanks for the tip with spectrum analyzer, but I'm far from that :)

What OS are you using? WMA lossless is transcoded (as opposed to WMA
lossy, which uses the built-in decoder). On Windows this is through
Windows Media Player. On Linux it's more tricky (something about
mplayer?)

It should have worked - try transcoding to WAV.

Yes to both. I have several 24/96 test files and they play fine on the
Transporter in both WAV and FLAC form. Note: do not enable the spectrum
analyzer screensaver or you'll peg the Transporter's CPU and get
stuttering. See http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29059

I tried one song at $2.75 for the Studio master. The Liszt Piano Grand
Etudes (track 4) was downloaded as a Studio Master (WMA lossless). It's
properties info says it is a 24/88 WMA 9.1 lossless 2 channel, VBR 100
quality, and runs at 2.27mps. Slimserver plays it fine on the
Transporter and Squeezebox3, but only when I told Slimserver to convert
WMA -> FLAC or WAV (not WMA built in). The players show it as a WMA
file, playing at 22.7khz with a bitrate of a high 2283kbps VBR, but I'm
not so sure that's not info coming off the tag, not what the network is
seeing. Not sure how to know whether I'm hearing true 24/88 on TP (and
of course 24/48 on SB3). ?

While I never underestimate marketing underhandedness these days, I
wonder what's in it for companies to offer lossless downloads? They
will consume more storage space and bandwidth. For a 1-million album
library, -considerably- more storage space and bandwidth!

I suppose they'll charge more for them. And then they'd kick the "MP3s
are so yesterday!" marketing campaign into high gear, pretending they
invented the lossless format...

It's just hard to see this coming from companies that taught the
consumer so well that 128 kbps = "CD quality" (and even invented the
phrase "CD quality" which they can use to indicate anything they want.)
With the financial carrot there, maybe.

It depends what they actually are.

They indicate the Studio Masters are 24-bit. I downloaded both the
16-bit and 24-bit samples and foobar2000 indicated they were both
16-bit, 44.1 kHz (CD equivalent). Perhaps foobar2000 downsamples WMA
to 16/44.1?

Linn does not indicate what sample rate the Studio Masters are, only
that they are 24-bit.

The Squeezebox 3 can play up to 24-bit, 48 kHz. 24-bit, 96 kHz
material is downsampled to 24-bit, 48 kHz, apparently very well. The
Transporter can play 24-bit, 96 kHz material natively (without
resampling). Neither can play material encoded higher than 24-bit, 96
kHz.

2007-01-15 Thread fred7

This is off the topic but since someone was mentioning that Amazon was a
good way to get music I figured that I would mention yourmusic.com I've
been using them for over a year now and I love it. Every CD that they
sell is $7 including SACD's (it used to be $6 but went up to $7 on the
first of this year). This includes shipping. The only catch is that you
have to set up a queue and but one disc from your queue each month. The
other thing is that most of their CD's are manufactured specifically
for BMG but I haven't had any problems with that, they sound perfect
and all of the artwork is included - even with box sets. They mostly
have mainstream stuff, you won't find hard to get stuff here but for $7
it's a steal. You can but as many discs as you like but you must buy one
from your queue each month and you can cancel at anytime. The only other
odd thing is that you can only add single discs to your queue (no box
sets or multi disc sets). I've probably bought over 400 CD's from them
so far, at $6 I was buying stuff that I *might* listen to but even $7
is a steal.

If you like classical music, the Philadelphia Orchestra has an online
music store that sells recordings of their live concerts in MP3 & FLAC
format (yes, lossless downloads!). I have downloaded a few things, and
it all works well and sounds great. Very progressive -- I wish more
orchestras would do this.

See: http://www.thephiladelphiaorchestra.com/

(The Philadephia Orchestra has always been out in front: it was the
first symphonic orchestra to make electrical recordings (1925), the
first to perform its own commercially sponsored radio broadcast (1929),
the first to perform on the soundtrack of a feature film (Paramount’s
The Big Broadcast of 1937), the first to appear on a national
television broadcast (1948), the first American orchestra to record the
complete Beethoven symphonies on compact disc (1988), and the first
major orchestra to give a live cybercast on the internet (1997).)

Turns out that they partnered with a site called www.nugs.net, which
makes most of its money selling downloads of live rock concerts of
bands like the Dave Matthews Band, Metallica, Phish, the Grateful Dead,
Barenaked Ladies, Gov’t Mule, Widespread Panic and the String Cheese
Incident. (Presumably, also in lossless formats?)

So, from Beethoven to Barenaked Ladies...

Perhaps because there are only one or two tracks on an album to which
you'd want to listen? I'm in exactly that position at the moment,
having about two tracks from each of half a dozen albums that rank
among my top favourites, but also knowing that I really do not want the
rest of the albums. Downloading is lots cheaper in those circumstances.
However, I'm still never going back to any downloading poor quality
lossy, as in iTunes music store. Most of these single tracks were
originally bought from iTunes, and I've decided that I can put up with
them no longer. Either I download lossless files (preferably AIFF or
ALAC) or else I grit the teeth and return, wailing, to haunt Amazon
again.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Lossless Downloads

2007-01-14 Thread mikeruss

I buy all 99% of my music from www.cd-wow.com Cheap as chips!! Plus it
often works out quicker (delivery and ripping ;-)) than downloading
large FLAC files. There is also the added benifit of having a hard copy
of your tunes.

I can't see a reason why I would download, apart from maybe a listen to
a track or two of an album then I will decide to buy.

Sorry, my tongue was firmly within my cheek in that post. Since buying
CDs is usually cheaper than downloading (especially since Amazon makes
it so easy to buy from the USA, and it's $2 to £1), the old fashioned
way works for me :)

Sorry to turn this into a music giants thread, but I just puked in my
mouth a little. Here's the bit of stereophile journalism I read before
mentioning them in the other thread
http://blog.stereophile.com/cedia2006/091606giants/ . Looks like they
set up an unmanned booth. Hmm...

I believe that the last part of the URL in www.amazon.whateverTLD
stands for "whatever Top Level Domain". So that would be www.amazon.com
or www.amazon.co.uk or whatever is appropriate for where you live/shop.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Lossless Downloads

2007-01-13 Thread opaqueice

Maybe half of the music avaliable at allofmp3.com was recorded in a
lossless format. They allow you to choose the format for your download
(FLAC is an option) and charge by the megabyte. Be warned that the
legality of downloads from there is in question.

If an album says OE (Online Encoding) it was recorded as a lossy free
format LAME MP3 at 384 kb/s. In that case the best option is to
download in that format, which is a pain (because very few media
players support it) but avoids transcoding artifacts. If it says OEEX
(Online Encoding EXclusive?) it was recorded losslessly.

I generally recommend www.amazon.whateverTLD. You need a little
patience (it can take days, scarcely acceptable in these days of
instant gratification and high bandwidth), but you get lossless music
with no DRM, a convenient system to store your backup in, often
includes front *and back* cover art :)
