How about a pair of Klipsch outdoor speakers about 10 feet apart where
the main seating will be. If that is not enough, add another pair
later.
A volume control on the wall would be nice. Here is a weather proof
one:

For an amp, a used Speakercraft amp on ebay would fit your budget.
These are tanks and can handle two sets of speakers easily. E.g.,

I can vouch for that Niles outdoor inline volume control. I have that
same model on my outdoor system, for those times when you need to
change the volume faster than you can find the SB remote. But it's not
cheap.

I noticed that, and to be honest, I haven't listened to most outdoor
speakers :-) But I thought I'd chime in since the equipment in my
outdoor system is pretty near bottom of the scale, with the speakers
only $100/pair and the amp about $90.

2011-10-03 Thread JJZolx

If the patio is covered is there a need for outdoor speakers?

I think I'd mix it down to mono as well for that setup. Nobody is
likely to hear much of a stereo image and anyone sitting close to one
of the speakers isn't going to hear all of the music. There was a
recent thread that discussed how this can be done in Squeezebox Server
itself by using SoX to do the mono mixing. Pretty simple, and easily
disabled to go back to stereo, so you could wire the speakers LRLR and
then experiment.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best option for an outdoor music system

2011-10-03 Thread RonM

In my own covered outdoor environments, I've found that the Boom works
very nicely. I abandoned my wiring projects altogether once I had my
first Boom.

Stereo issues won't arise, since the Boom's speakers are conjoined
twins, and stereo is only really produced at close range. Two Booms
(if required) could be synced and produce a very nice effect over a
large space.

And, of course, they can be used in uncovered environments in clement
weather, and regardless of where they are, they easily moved under
cover.

Sound is better than most outdoor speakers.

Without a dedicated listening position, stereo is pointless IMO. I think
I would place the speakers evenly, and perhaps try a LRLR configuration
for even distribution of the sound. (And maybe experiment with LRRL for
some semblance of stereo.) Switching the cables back and forth should be
a breeze, so if you don't like it you can easily go back to the
default(?) LLRR setup.

Agreed - in fact unless one is a big fan of 60's psych (with its
out-of-phase panning FX) I'd use mono instead and feed 2 or 4 speakers
with the same signal. This is easily achieved.

In a space that's 80 feet by 25 feet I LRRL would give a reasonable
stereo sound for those at the ends, but way too much right channel for
those in the middle. And LLRR would do the opposite: fine in the middle
and hugely unbalanced at the ends (all left at one end, all right at the
other). I would definitely recommend LRLR over either LRRL or LLRR.
Imagine 3 clumps of people spread out along the 80' length. The ones at
either end would get more than a semblance of stereo, and those in the
middle would more than a semblance of stereo with the channels
reversed. And it would be fairly smooth transitions as one walked along
the length. I have my kitchen speakers set up LRLR and it works well.

I hadn't thought about mono, but that's definitely worth a try.

Without knowing the exact layout and way the space tends to be used(
where people gravitate and so forth), it's all a guess. Is the goal
even distribution across the whole span or are there some specific ares
who's layout might support a stereo arrangement?

Wiring for mono can work, or in fact you can buy outdoor mono speakers
-- usually two tweeters, a single woofer and l/r inputs. If the
speakers are to be mounted nearly 20 feet hIgh, a rough minimum of 14
ft from the nearest head but likely more as their out from a wall,
you'll likely begin to lose a lot of separation anyway.

I use a Touch feeding an indoor amp, speaker wires running outside from
it to a pair of N-E-A-R A8 outdoor speakers. I have a volume control
in- inline that is in a weatherproof outdoor box, the type you might
use to cover a power outlet. Whole system works perfectly, I use my
iPhone or iPad for control.

The NEARs are excellent outdoor speakers and have held up four years
now in bad weather (incl the recent hurricane) w/o a problem. I've
recently become a dealer for Paradigm -- so take this as you will --
but they make excellent outdoor speakers as well.

I have decided to go with an amp and two sets of outdoor speakers, along

two right channels. Should I space the speakers evenly along the wall or
would it make more sense to put the lefts and rights closer to each

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best option for an outdoor music system

2011-09-27 Thread aubuti

I agree on the suggestion to use passive speakers. Normally I would also
agree with the suggestion of an amp indoors along with a Duet Receiver
or SB Touch, and I'd add a weatherproofed in-line volume control, for
those times you need to drop the volume quickly and can't find the
remote fast enough.

But since you've thrown an iPod in as the music source I'm not sure
what to say, esp in the Audiophile forum. Maybe an iPod dock and an amp
that can be hauled in and out whenever tunes are needed?

For outdoor passive speakers I have been happy with Polk Atrium 45.
They are only about $100/pair, so with your budget and the amount of
space you need to cover I would look higher in the Polk lineup. And be
sure that your speaker cable is rated for outdoor use -- ordinary
speaker cable isn't.

Passive outdoor speakers require only one cable per speaker, and you
won't have to think about electrical wiring outdoors. As the speakers
are exposed to the elements (to some degree, at least), you want as
little electronics in the speakers as possible.

Put an amp or two inside and connect it to a Squeezebox Receiver or
Touch. I can't give you any specific recommendations about makes and
models, but I'm sure somebody else around here can.

Controlling the volume in software with the Squeezebox will be
sufficient for this setup, so you won't need a pre-amp.
