Adam, I got a TP on 7 day sale or return from Ripcaster. I didn't go for it and Ripcaster even arranged collection. The service from Ripcaster was second to none. At the time I had a stand alone sb3. I preferred the sb3's looks and simplicity. I bought a Shek 1 and was pleased with the sonic improvement. Within a couple of months I played devil's advocate by getting a Benchmark Dac1 on 7 day sale or return from Digital Village. The BM Dac1 is what I was looking for. Now I have the attack and deep bass of my Naim cd front end which rrp is about GBP6K. The sb3 plus BM Dac1 is a great pairing. I've still not found any combination of network player/dac (including the Transporter) that sounds as likeable as my CDX. I tried the SB3 (inc. linear PSU) with a Benchmark Dac1, Perpetual Technologies P-A3/P-A3, and NOS Arcam BlackBox and found the DCA1 the least likeable. Next to the CDX it was cold, clinical, mechanical and quite tiring over time. However, I agree it did have attack although I didn't feel that there was anything special about the bass. I'd be mildly surprised if Adam, who appears to prefer timbre over detail, would be satisfied with the Dac1... I heartily agree with Adam's sentiment regarding the sound quality of analogue/CD/network player. I am heartily pissed off that each new technological revolution appears to degrade the sound of my music still further. The NAIM CDX gave me the nearest sound to analogue (within my budget) and was acceptable.. but I've yet to hear a network player or network player/dac combination that pops my cork. I'd be very interested in your SB+ thoughts Adam... it's a shame I never get to London or I'd bring up my Transporter for a comparison (you provide the Merlot)... but saying that, it can sometimes takes weeks for the differences in the sound of a unit to sink into me. Well we could always swap for a week or two; just what happens if we agree on which is best? I agree that it can take ages to decide what is actually best - spotting differences is easy, it's sussing out which works with the rather impressive NZ sauvignon blanc I'm drinking at the moment (the death of South African cricket, once we beat them next week...). It's all kinda zingy over full-bodied right now - heck, I might even like your Naim system over my valves. Sanity will be restored tomorrow. It would be a network streamer plus DAC that would be guaranteed to pop your cork, plus you could stream and decode your HDCD FLAC albums properly :-) Possibly, but NAIM are just about to release a new thingy that has DAC's in it that can be used by third party devices like the SB3. It's too bleedin' expensive (as all NAIM stuff is) but if it gives me the convenience of the SB3 with the NAIM sound I can rest at last. ah you have been married too long... my fiancee is a serial ripping machine :-) still, dbpowerAmp and her don't get on - and there is always a chance that at end of day I find she accidently clicked something and all the results are useless. my excel flac editing program is fantastic. i can point it at c:\music and it dumps all the tags on 50,000 odd tracks into the spreadsheet very quickly or i can load subdirectories of c:\music instead. i can run global edit replace J S Bach with Bach. I can zoom in with autofilters, sort by up the three columns blah blah. It's a revolution compared to tag rename etc. Will post it as freeware on the net shortly. applied for the domain www.exceltagger.com but it's not up yet. thanks again for feedback on transporter. can't wait for it now. right now i am using SB3s with Onkyo CR715 midi systems plugged into Quad 21L speakers for the dining room, bedrooms and study. But in the living room I have a much bigger system with no digital optical in, and since i never got around to buying an external dae i can't use the sb3. the transporter will bring the living room into sync with the rest of the house. -- willyhoops willyhoops's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10563 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34313 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If you need more time to clear customs, you could catch the 21:55 back, which lands at 10:10. You'd be fresh and ready to go to work. You can do Zurich return for £50 though. I'm very happy with my TP. UK distance selling regs allow you to return it within 7 days if you buy on-line and the £1100 price (ex-VAT) is only £80 more than the US price which doesn't seem too unreasonable. -- Fifer Fifer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=639 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34313 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

It's simple really. Do as I did to get mine here in China. Send the wife to the USA on a shopping trip she brings it back for you. Of course you need to find a friend to stay with to get the TP delivered etc. At 1.97$ to Sterling, she could rapidly save the airfare. (well that was my wife's logic!) Adam - did you actually contact the Swiss reseller to see if pickup was an option? Just curious, as I'm in a similar quandry to you. I've tried all sorts of experimentation with my SB3, but it still lacks a certain something compared to my cd player - an Arcam CD23. I've considered a SB+, but its black, and I don't like the wood round the sides...fussy I know! And new SB3 are $230 right now, which is only about £150 at fair exchange rates. How happy are TP owners now? I'm happy. I am using it instead of my SB+Benchmark DAC-1. It has better WAF. Do we actually think the TP will go up in price in the UK? I never understood UK prices. Lots of things cost as much in pounds sterling as dollars, which is insane, the pound is worth much more than the dollar. Shipping is just not that much. Your VAT, etc. are steep, but not that steep. Adam, If flights are cheaper, come to Dallas. Or , better still, make a tour of the US TP owners so you can make a truly informed decision. Since you will have a pint at Pat's we'll have Mcallans 18 year here. Have a California cab while in Cali and I GAURANTEE you will like the TP a lot. I've had my TP since they 1st came out and I still think it's great. Cheers guys The main issue seems to be the 30-day trial. AFAIK there is no such trial period in the UK. Irritating, deeply. Your US offers are generous, but I can do Zurich in a day return, and the TP is cheaper there that in the US (comments on international pricing welcome :) ) plus the flight is much less and they have loads of drugs there... All I really want is to try it in my system; I've never bought anything close to that price unheard and I suspect I'm not close to doing it now. Pat, I have tried the SB3 wired and can hear no difference, even on 24 bit FLACs - wireless is not the problem, the SB3 quality is. Is the TP advantage over SB3/DAC-1 sonic or aesthetic, primarily? The sounds are both good, I don't have the ability to describe the difference. The idea reminds me of The Absolute Sound folks talking about chocolate and yin/yang. The TP is clearly better looking. But the Benchmark is not bad looking, it very 'serious' in a pro-audio way. I do not use the knob. I played with it when I first got it, but I use my laptop and the browser 99% of the time. British Airways has direct from Heathrow to Dallas sometimes as low as 200 pounds round trip, but you have to keep a lookout for prices like that. I thought there were EU consumer laws that allow you to return a product within a certain time period for a full refund. Wouldn't that apply to the TP as well?
