Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Lossless Downloads

2007-08-30 Thread 325xi

Just placed another order at cdbaby.com - they got some nice solo piano
pieces, and send them an email if they're planning to offer lossless
downloads.

They replied enthusiastically that they just started to offer non
DRM-ed downloads... which of course happened to be MP3. I wrote back
explaining why would I appreciate FLAC. :)

Anyways, they got some really good music, and now they have an
infrastructure for downloads. I was thinking if they receive some more
request for FLAC from the fellow audiophiles, it might help to
accelerate the required development...

What do you think?

i did the upsampling to 96 with audacity, but with straight wav
files...

they now play fine in transporter...

no problem to convert them into flac now...

make sure you check out all the settings in audacity first (high
quality sampling with 32bit floating integers and so on...)

wav export output 24 bit

I think the header of the wma lossless LINN files is somewhat
corrupt, since when converting them with the m$ tool into wav, some
audio tools still can't properly import the wav... only a few do this
correct - so far my experience...

yes you'll probably be right there.

but resampling a 24 bit 88.2 kHz source up to 24 bit 96 kHz with all
the features on (high quality sampling and 32 bit floating integer
for calculations), I assume that the target file is at least sounding
the same as the source.

may be just a little bit smoother due to the little extra wave
smoothing...

there are those dithering algorythms which guess the missing bits and
calculate the (speaking of 88.2 kHz source!) very tiny, missing
spaces...

The reason why I'm asking is that I remember that some older DSP
algorithms usually did more harm then good, and the word DSP was
considered bad in audio context.

The 88.2kHz wav files to the external dac just give a loud hiss, just

44.1kHz signal.

Sure would be nice to find a way to get the SB to handle higher sample

I then coverted the WAV to FLAC using xACT. I had to change some

Then I reflected over the 88,2 kHz and I'm not sure wheter you asked a

I though'd I already checked but realize I just confirmed wmadec just
converted it to 44 kHz. I'll convert one of the 88 kHz files using your

That said, SB3 is not supposed to support anything more than 48 kHz

It probably can - the SB3 passes along digital formats it can't decode
over S/PDIF, bit-perfectly. These are things like HDCD and AC3/DTS -
it's logical to assume this also applies to high bitrates like 88.2 and
96 kHz. Bit comes in, bit goes out...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Lossless Downloads

Thanks. The album I'm using is Vivaldi by La Serenissima. I checked
the WMA file in Windows Media Player, and Properties says it's an 88kHz
file. So it looks like I got this right.

Still quite a pain to have to do two conversions to get the file to
play on my SB3, even if each conversion is lossless.

I should be receiving a DAC that's capable of up to 96kHz (a Lite
DAC-60) in the next couple of days. When I get a chance, I'll check to
see if the SB3 can pass an 88kHz signal to it, using either WAV or FLAC
 files.

OOPS! I've now realized that, while the SB3 is playing the 88.2kHz
FLAC files, it's playing them at half speed! I didn't notice this with
the first couple of instrumental tracks I listened to (of music I'm not
familar with), but it became blindingly obvious with vocals. Oh, well
- we'll see what happens when I hook up a DAC, although another user's
report that his DAC shows a 44kHz signal when the SB shows an 88kHz one
isn't encouraging.

They are for sure, one of your support guys have one from me.
His name is is Anoop, I think.

When you use the wma - wav decode (wmadec) it will be 16 bits, not 24.
Which is why I used truckfighters method, using wmal2pcm.exe, then wav

I had slimserver setup to to wma - flac and wma - wav, both worked
too.

I'm not sure how you know it's 16 bit in any of the cases.

Because for -b it says Valid values are 8 or 16 I assume it doesn't
handle 24 bits.

I just tried this on a 24bit 44.1khz file from Linn Records (Barb Jungr
 - Waterloo Sunset, studio master). The wav file doesn't play, but the
flac file encoded from that wav does (on my SB2)! They both show as
24bit in Foobar, flac=1474kbps, wav=2116kbps. They both play in foobar.
 Weird!
btw, Foobar shows the wma as 44.1khz/16bit!!/1462kbps. I can transcode
to flac from foobar but then my flac is 16bit, and half the size as the
 wma.

Works straigth away for me. Just downloaded the all the WMA files for
that album, rescanned slimserver music lbryary and then they all played
fine.

Foobar also views 88 kHz/24 bit has as 44.1 kHz/ 16 bit.
