There's a virtual filesystem on Linux called mp3fs. Using this you can have just one set of real files in FLAC yet they can be presented as MP3 files virtually. They are only decoded from FLAC and encoded into MP3 when they are accessed. All tags are preserved. I've used mp3fs on Linux successfully (and it works with Samba too, so you can export the virtual mp3 files across a network). It might be worth trying out with iTunes, but it depends what kind of things iTunes does to files in its library...not sure. A quick google suggests it works on Mac too: http://www.uwe-arzt.de/patchmp3fs Darren -- darrenyeats http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/richpub/listmania/byauthor/A3H57URKQB8AQO/ref=cm_pdp_content_listmania/203-7606506-5721503. Can I play my Apple Lossless in 'native' mode (please no mails on the great Apple nasties - it works, it is solid and it has the market ...). No and no. AAC+ and ALAC both need to be transcoded by the server for the Transporter to play them. There are some very good reasons for this. There isn't enough space in the firmware to be able to have all the codecs out there. There is also the time/cost to port these codecs over to the Ubicom processor vs. the benefit they would give to the customer base. -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61804 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I gotta admit, I'm nervous of just this... iTunes is one of the best packages I've used for organizing music, but apple haven't demonstrated that they're really concerned with hi quality. Their low end players don't support lossless, and their high end touch and iPhone products shipped with an obvious bug when playing lossless (random drop outs). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Ramblings ...
Thx for the confirmation that I have not missed something (ie. the ability to play AAC+ streaming and ALAC in native)regarding the Transporter. And while I appreciate the comments about 'size of firmware' and 'cost to transcode' there remains this huge presence of iTunes out there. You might not like it but it is there and it is the dominate factor (at least according to the stats I see). So, there must be a middle ground here. I am not going to convert all of my CDs to FLAC so they work with the Transporter as that causes an issue with my iPod. As mentioned, before the proverbial Catch 22! As mentioned, I want the Transporter to be the premium platform for digital music at an audiophile level. Whats wrong with transcoding on the server for proprietary formats (if you insist on using them ) ? it will load the cpu a bit but a decent mac/pc/server will cope with it. It won't hurt sound quality at all, lossless is lossless. you can have alac transcoded to flac. Besides there are some kamikaze pilots ;-) here that insist on having alac and wma lossles on linux based NAS boxes ? that would be like me shopping for cars in uk and complaining that the steering wheel is at wrong side. Use your alac or wma lossles with an os/hardware that has natural support for it, makes transcoding painless (unless you like pain ). -- Mnyb Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61804 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

As mentioned, before the proverbial Catch 22! I know too well what you mean! I hate maintaining two copies of everything, but that's actually what I'm doing right now... Flac on Linux for Squeeze center, and Apple lossless on OSX for the ipod. But to even get down to two, I had to throw out an ipod shuffle, because it won't do lossless, and iTunes wouldn't allow me to transcode to better than 128... It should be noted though, that some of the problem lies with Apple. AFAIK, they have never released their lossless codec algorithms (certainly not to the open source world), they've only provided hooks to allow you to use iTunes or QuickTime to compress or expand. Those tools that don't rely on Apple software, reverse engineered the codec... That means they're always at the mercy of Apple making changes -- DCtoDaylight Audiophile wish list: Zero Distortion, Infinite Signal to Noise Ratio, and a Bandwidth from DC to Daylight DCtoDaylight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61804 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Use flac2mp3' to make a complete parallel copy of your library, point your iPod to it. There are 2 Terabyte disk drives for $100, and the MP3 library will be only 20 to 25% of the size of the flac library.
