Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide 2011
WPP, Thank you for the update: A most informative post. Good luck in your position of CD. With a good support team, and hopefully Qld weather back to normal, how can you go wrong ... go wrong go wrong? May you have a great comp. Re egos - maybe it is only a matter of time? Just spent (another) week competing with Matthew Scutter, at Horsham Week. {A very successful - 4 days flown - but difficult (weather wise), competition :Check out the dedicated Horsham Week web site for results and details.} No problems here with ego, or Matthew's approach to the sport - other competitors at Kingaroy watch out! A great pity that no other Junior competed in this event. For the record, I think I am right in saying that there is an ongoing policy of subsidised entry (free?), to this event for juniors. Anyway, it is certain that Matthew gained a lot of valuable experience from being there, which will make him even harder to catch: He gains - every other junior losers. Why? It is now an acknowledged fact, that to be ultimately successful - the elite of the elite - in (almost?), any endeavour, the first step is that participant must put in 10,000 hours of MEANINGFUL practice!!! Basically talent does not enter into the equation - but there are a hell of a lot of other factors! Check out such books as Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, or Bounce by Matthew Syed - there are others - for an overview to gain some insight into this. If you are a AFL fan, have a read of Collingwood's Nathan Buckley's biography All I Can Be for his story to football success, and verification of the theory - of which he seems to be blissfully ignorant! [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide 2011
G’day Race Fans! After another successful junior nationals – thanks to Angus ‘Gus’ Stewart (CD), ‘Super John’ Hudson and his hard working team at the Waikerie Gliding Club. I thought I had better get started early to try and top another great event! Lead by a positive junior pilots meeting in December 2010, it was my job to put it all into action. What was said at this meeting? That JoeyGlide was to be held in Queensland for the first time since the event began in 2004, and the rest was up to the juniors to decide: Dates and configuration of the gliders. So after two months of ringing around, writing e-mails, and generally gathering the thoughts and views of the juniors for their preferences – it’s with my pleasure that I can announce that the 8th Australian Junior Gliding Nationals will be held at the Kingaroy airfield! Particular thanks of course must go to the members at the Kingaroy Soaring Club (www.kingaroysoaring.com.au) for their support and enthusiasm! I’d also like to thank Ross McLean, Anita Taylor and their positive sports committee for Australian Gliding. They’ve both been of great help to ensure that our competition is held at the best time for us all, at the chosen site and not at conflicting times to the other senior nationals. So please join in thanking these key people to make our competition an amazing event! I’ve started the organisation early so to help the juniors plan well ahead, set goals, save money, etc. JG every year is a success, regardless of numbers. Why? It’s the amazing culture that it brings, everyone is there to have a good time. As John Hudson described from the JG10 comp, “It’s a senior nationals really, great people but all without the ego’s!”. The juniors are an extremely safety conscious lot of pilots, as they seem to be really concerned how they’re looked upon by their senior peers – I guarantee you’ll all be very impressed of you’re able to make it to JoeyGlide for a look! Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide 2010 - Practice Days 1 2
JG is over for another year, and what a year it was. After the last minute chance of venue, we ended up with flying and tasking EVERY DAY of the comp (including two practice days), a total of eight consecutive flying days. This had never been done before in the seven years of JoeyGlide. Thanks again to everyone who helped out, especially the people involved in the last minute move. Special mentions to the Waikerie Gliding Club, lead by 'Super-John' Hudson who made everything run smoothly and drove the tug every day; Jean for cooking up a wonderful meal for us every night; Anne Wolfe who sorted us all out with accommodation; all the Waikerie club members who staffed the bar and put up with us invading their clubhouse; Grant Johnson for keeping his watchful eye on us as safety officer; Cath Conway for helping hugely with the move, setting us great tasks (even if I didn't make it around them all) and coaching in the K21 and Duo; Andrew Horton for his continued generosity to the Juniors and helping out coaching; and Derek Spencer, Paul Mander, George Brown and Bernard Eckey for their time in the back seat coaching for the week. A huge thanks also to Gus Stewart who comp directed the week. Having only taken on the job six weeks ago, he then took on the huge task of moving the comp only two weeks ago, Gus then pulled off an awesome comp with everyone: competitors, coachees and anyone else who popped in, having a great time. If he wasn't buggering off to England for a few years he'd have a job for life. If there's anyone I've missed out I apologise, and thank you! Now time to start looking forward to next year! At the pilots meeting it was decided to move the comp up north to Queensland next year, and Adam Woolley was nominated CD. I'm sure we'll be hearing from him before long! Thanks again to everyone involved! It was a great week. Now back to work L. Membership of the club is available at www.ajgc.org.au to all pilots of any age. Applications, detailing why you think you should be awarded the scholarship, should be either emailed to p...@ajgc.org.au or posted to: The Australian Junior Gliding Club, 7 Lomandra St, O'Connor, ACT 2602. Applications close Friday 12th November. Any questions, please contact myself on the above email address. More information is available on the Australian Junior Gliding Club is on our website at www.ajgc.org.au , and more info on JoeyGlide is at www.joeyglide.com. Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide airspace
As is generally acepted, a breach of Controlled Airspace is a serious issue and must be treated accordingly. It is my considered view that there is no plausible excuse for Violations of Controlled Airspace (nothing is acceptable) under any circumstances - if you are lost, unsure of your position or in trouble, talk to ATC, they want to and will help - at least by keeping everyone else out of the probable area. Ignorance of the vertical or lateral boundaries cannot be an acceptable excuse - it is every pilots responsibility to remain outside Controlled Airspace Boundaries unless a clearance is obtained. There is ample information - maps (in this case, detailed maps produced by ASC), Tolerances, Briefings etc readily available. A focus on the consequences of unauthorised penetration of a CTA may put the focus in perspective - particularly those close to busy primary Capital City airports (the chances of it happening half-way between Broken Hill and Alice Springs are remote). Try to imagine the consequences of running into (or near to) a 737 in descent (it doesnt bear thinking about about surely - we would all be flying in the back-of-beyond). Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide airspace
Hello all, I can confirm that Joeyglide is being run in accordance with the Australian Nationals rules, and I apologise for any suggestion that it might not be. In my previous note, I was stating the default penalty. There is a provision in the rules for the Penalties Committee to apply a more lenient penalty in the non-competitive part of the flight, if the breach of airspace was not to the competitive advantage of the pilot and where there were extenuating circumstances. I cannot comment in detail on the reasons for their decision - I can only say that they have that option and obviously exercised it in this case. Cheers and Merry Christmas to all. Tim Tim Shirley wrote: The Australian Nationals Rules do not differentiate. There is a three-level penalty which is the same as that which operates at World Comps: first offence, outlanding at the point of the offence; second offence, zero for the day; third offence, disqualification. Naturally, an outlanding before the start makes the first offence the same as the second :) I do not know why Joeyglide would be runto any other rule. They should be running on current Nationals rules - and until I had spoken to the CD, I would not assume otherwise, regardless of what may be posted in this forum. Tim Mike Borgelt wrote: At 10:15 AM 20/12/2007, you wrote: Well this changes everything. The scorer has undertaken to seek clarification about the rules, and it seems that pre-start airspace violations provide for a 100 point penalty, not zero points. There'll be updated scores in due course :-) The other interesting thing is that we're now five days into the contest and none of the people affected by this have read the rules and raised a protest. As David Conway says, That kind of education is one of the reasons we run JoeyGlide. - mark Maybe nobody bothered with that rule because it is absurd. Could someone please detail the thinking, to use the term loosely, behind that penalty system? Surely an airspace violation during a contest flight is just that and the penalty should be the same no matter when it occurred? The consequences whether in civil penalties or mid airs are surely the same. I can't see CASA bothering to differentiate between pre start and after start when taking the violater to court. Airspace Breaches and Competition Rules. In my opinion there is no excuse for breaching airspace if you're a competition pilot, the only penalty for breaches should be disqualification from the event - No repeat offenders and it sends a clear message to the remainder of the competitors. If a pilot has to enter C, D of even A class airspace due to stress of weather, declare a PAN and negotiate a clearance, how easy is that. There are a good number of people both at the GFA management level and at club level negotiating access to airspace for all GFA members; if competition directors are not seen to take breaches seriously this could provide CASA and AsA with evidence that we as a groups do not take airspace seriously and withdrawal what we have already negotiated, and not negotiate again. Just a reminder to remember that one of the reasons for airspace penetration is not knowing the reference point for the airspace. Do you want to be responsible for that? Airspace breaches are taken seriously as a safety issue. Each breach results in an incident report which I've been following up with the pilots concerned, and pilots are left under absolutely no doubt about the seriousness of the matter. More than one breach from a pilot will result in the pilot's exit from the comp, no if's, but's or maybe's. As a rule, I don't believe a competition safety officer should give a crap about the rules of the comp; If something is unsafe or illegal it's unsafe or illegal regardless of what the rules or scoring equations say. A safety officer needs to make decisions independently (although consultively) and, one hopes, intelligently. Which, more specifically, means that an airspace breach is a serious operational issue regardless of what the non-operational competition rules have to say about it. I can see how someone who has absolutely nothing to do with what's going on here could form the view that someone doesn't take airspace seriously, but perhaps a less combative and less patronizing approach that such a person could take might be to enquire, Do you guys take airspace seriously? before rendering judgement. Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide airspace
There is really no excuse for violation of controlled airspace. Most of the comp area of Joey glide would be covered by the Adelaide VNC, this clearly shows the airspace boundaries. Although flying around Gawler, you are less than 5NM horizontally from the airspace boundaries!!! Also NOTAMs should be covered as part of the daily briefing (as these should disclose any differences to published airspace boundaries). Refer to AIP for guidance: 19.11 Avoiding Controlled Airspace The pilot in command of an aircraft operating in Class G airspace, or to the VFR in Class E airspace, must apply appropriate tolerances to the flight path to ensure that controlled airspace, or restricted areas, are not infringed. In calculating whether an intended flight path may infringe controlled airspace, the following navigational tolerances must be applied to the intended flight path depending on method of navigation used. These tolerances may be rounded up to the nearest half degree for practical purposes: NDB ±6.9° VOR/TACAN ±5.2° DR ±12° Note: For DR tracking ±9 o may be used where initial track guidance has been provided by NDB, VOR or TACAN and there is no subsequent change in track. RNAV ±14NM VISUAL (POWERED AIRCRAFT) 0 ? 2,000 AGL ±1NM ( ±2NM by night) 2,001 ? 5,000 AGL ±2NM ( ±3NM by night) 5,001 ? 10,000 AGL ±4NM ( ±5NM by night) VISUAL (GLIDERS) 0 ? 10,000 ±5NM VISUAL (ALL AIRCRAFT) 10,001 ? Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide airspace
Perhaps some people should talk to the pilots involved in the competition that breached airspace before commenting on this. I do admit, breach of airspace is a serious thing, but there are a few different reasons. Some breaches were avoidable, arising out of lack of navigation and/or pilot error, but some were not. I'd rather avoid explaining why on here, but perhaps talk to the pilots concerned (especially from day 3) before commenting. I think that after doing so, you would have a slightly different opinion of some of the breaches. Dion Baker. On 21/12/2007, Stuart Kerri FERGUSON [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Alan, What a crock! [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide Day 4 - Quick Summary
Task was originally going to be Robertstown, Waikerie, Kapunda, return, but was modified several times before the start gate opened as the weather conditions changed. We had Cb and thunderstorms for most of the afternoon, lots of Cu, cloudbase at about 9000'; but a rain front coming in across the task area from Burra. In the end it didn't end up reaching Gawler, but pilots had to exercise their met navigation skills to get around (especially the Pik pilots -- there was lots of virga, which can be a tad amusing if you're in a Pik20). THere were also three sea breeze influences during the day, with the Northern part of the task area getting it from the top of the Gulf, the South Eastern part getting it off Lake Alexandrina, and Gawler itself receiving the typical Gawler sea breeze that everyone knows and loves. Sorry, I'm writing this at home at the moment and don't have the final task in front of me. It'll be on the website soon along with the scores, and that may well be more edifying than reading this. Charlie I'Anson came third, Heath Ledger L'Estrange came second, and Sarah Allen won the day in Pik20D WVA. That win also happens to put Sarah in first place for the comp overall at the end of day 4. Todd, and AshLEY both busted airspace pre-start and received zero points for the day. Charlie and Colin Stauss both came close enough to it to get a warning. Wilson and Sylvia, from NZ and USA respectively, had their first comp days and also breached airspace and received zero points, so they'll be working hard today to get themselves onto the scoreboard on day 5. Gus had an undercarriage collapse after landing pre-start. He's flying an LS4, which means it's probably working as designed :-) Some inspections and phone calls to Tom Gilbert confirmed that the aircraft is ok, so he took a late start and flew again, coming in an hour under the task time. Caleb also flew the minimum task distance one hour under time, and between the two of them they pretty severely degraded the scores for the four outlanders. Betting observers may wish to know who those outlanders are. I'm at home now without the score sheet in front of me; suffice to say it was AshLEY, Anne, Ben and Nick Maddocks. One of the comments that's come through very strongly throughout the comp is that the level of organization and professionalism being shown by the competitors is fantastic. They're gridding on time, turning up to briefings, their preparation is all happening when it needs to happen, nobody is complaining about stupid stuff and everyone is getting on with the job. If this is the future of competition gliding in Australia, the organizers of future Nationals comps will find their jobs getting easier with time as these people move up to the big comps and set an example for everyone else. - mark I tried an internal modem,[EMAIL PROTECTED] but it hurt when I walked. Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide airspace
The Australian Nationals Rules do not differentiate. Thanks Mal, The two people to be thanked in this case are Martin Feeg (who came up with the concept, and thought it a good way to get exposure and give something back to the host city/town) and Simon Hackett (ie. There is a new 'Mailing List' page on the JoeyGlide website ( www.JoeyGlide.com ) for those who are either a Junior ( sub 26 y.o.) or that have an active interest in the junior movement in general and would like to subscribe. Those travelling from QLD WA will be compensated by greatly reduced entry fees ($20) we will make every effort to source locally available gliders vehicles to allow them to fly commercially to Adelaide. I have had several emails from S.A. based non-junior pilots who have expressed an interest in helping out - If the offer is still standing we would greatly appreciate your help! Regards. G'Day Dion, JoeyGlide falls under the nationals rules, as do the other 2 national contests. We use the Club Class Handicaps, but it is not necessarily a club class competition as such (competitors can use water ballast). Bring it along! Nick. Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide 07/08 - Gawler, SA
Heh, can't use water ballast, we took the bags out, and there's no way I'm going to attempt to put them back in again (it's done by a network of strings and pulleys, so to speak, and just isn't worth the trouble). Also, just realised it's 17meter not 16.5 . Looking at the Club Class Handicaps on the gfa website it's 0.980 for Diamant 16.5. I'm assuming all the conditions and prices for the comp are on the website. Of course, if you cant make it to JoeyGlide to give us a hand, the least you can do is switch to using Internode for your ISP. Not only do they provide this list, they are by far the biggest sponsor for JoeyGlide - There is no way it would be growing the way it is without their support. God bless you Simon. Here is a very brief rundown on criteria : Must Haves: - Must be reasonably central (sorry Western Australians - central to the eastern southern states :) - Must be 'junior friendly' - Must have generally good weather late December / early January and be able to host the comp at this time. Nice to Haves: - Either Winch Aerotow Ops Possible, or tugs onsite to reduce ferry launch costs - Plenty of non aviation activities (something to do on no-fly days) A small committee is in the process of being formed to evaluate any expressions of interest received. I can be contacted on 0430099771 if you would rather talk about it on the phone first. The contest runs for 7 days and is likely to start in between Christmas and New Year. Hi JR, a good year to you too :) Interesting question. I just read a fellow club members chat email post whose flight started at 8:45 local (AEST)(Its not a rounded time with respect to minutes) By the mention of a time zone and the variable of Daylight Savings Time I had to think a touch more with regards to which time is in fact earlier. Being a Queenslander, what would I know about DST and therefore timezones anyway... That said, is the time zone at all relevant? Correct me if I'm wrong but 2007 started at a different point in time for someone, depending on their time zone. So a launch of 8:45 local was exactly so many hours/minutes into the new year of 2007. So apples can be directly compared with apples? Converted back to UTC, ACST is UTC +10.5 where as Qld is +10 making the 8:48 launch earlier in absolute time. I can be so pedantic sometimes ;) I'll let the club member answer your post directly (to make his claim!) The flight itself was noteworthy as well. Just a gentle flex of the grey matter post festive season;) Rgds A.J. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of JR Sent: Tuesday, 2 January 2007 8:22 PM To: Tom Wilksch; Discussion of issues relating to Soaring in Australia. Re: [Aus-soaring] Joeyglide
AJ Wesley wrote: I'll let the club member answer your post directly (to make his claim!) The flight itself was noteworthy as well. Well - that was me. According to my IGC file, I took off at 08:42:55 and soaring commenced at 08:45:37 (at 2,667ft - which is interesting as that is 1,467ft agl and Alice was full of water). I was trying to do a 1000km flight from Jondaryan to Charleville and back. In the event, I got to Mitchell airfield (west of Roma) where the landable country ends. It's still 160km or so to Charleville and there is only one landing option - halfway at Morven airfield. So I needed the day to be higher and stronger than was the case. Still it was an interesting flight. I am getting used to early take offs and working from 1500ft to about 3000ft whilst full of water. I could actually have launched at least 15 min earlier if we had been ready! Fortunately, going west from Jondaryan the landing options are everywhere, but with the convection top so low, there is generally a great deal of weak lift around (much of it not workable in a water laden Nimbus2c though). Coming back from Mitchell the day overdeveloped and I had to divert quite a long way north of track (to Jandowae) in order to get round the over development, but I had my two highest climbs of the day as my last two climbs (getting close to 8000ft qnh). If it had been working that high at Mitchell I would have been able to push westward over the scrub for a while - and could have been faced with interesting decision about going on or turning back. Today doesn't look good but possibly tomorrow (Thursday) will allow me to have another try. What I need is a day that starts early (as it did on 1 Jan) but develops more quickly and goes much higher. I really need to be at 10,000ft or more at Mitchell with good experience of reliable lift to be able to cross the two 80km segments of unlandable country (twice) to make it to Charleville and back. You can see my trace on the OLC at http://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/gliding/flightinfo.html?flightId=-593380508 and I'll let everyone know if the next few days weather cooperates to allow the first 1000km flight entirely within Qld! -- Robert Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] +61 (0)438 385 533 http://www.hart.wattle.id.au ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

[Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide - Towplanes
Hi There, Due to some issues with Tugs Tug pilots, the Australian Junior Nationals is desperately in need of a Tug pilot that is able to attend Leeton from this coming Friday to the following Sunday (2nd December – 11th December). Anything will be considered at this stage! Please pass the word around. If you know of someone with a Pawnee, Maule, Cessna 180, Cessna 182, Cessna 185, etc. that may be available, please give me a call on 0419 412 772. Thanks, Nick Gilbert Contest Director -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide
Hi, First of all, the tug dramas have been solved. Thanks to those of you who responded with leads ideas. The competition itself starts this coming Saturday (the 3rd) with the practice day, and runs until Saturday the 10th. There are already several gliders onsite at Leeton, as you can see if you go to www.JoeyGlide.com and click on the ‘Webcam’ tab. The intention is for this contest to have the best competition website Australia has seen. We have a full time web developer / photographer coming to keep everything up to date, and scores will be published on the website (barring any technology issues) following our evening presentation ceremony which will happen at about 8:30pm – 9:00pm each night. We also have an online database that will show the status of each aircraft during the competition task. This can be accessed through the ‘ContestLive’ link at the top of the page. Ideally we would have liked to have real-time tracking, but this uses the GPRS network, something that is rather scarce in regional NSW. As we have gained a large amount of sponsorship for this contest, the best thing you can do the help the contest is to view the website as often as possible, and show our sponsors that they have gained the sort of exposure for their brand or organization that they have paid for. Thanks to all of those who have assisted. Nick Gilbert. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
