[AZORES-Genealogy] Vila Franca do Campo People

2014-02-20 Thread Marcia
I've been communicating back and forth with the Camara Municipal trying to
find some information that could be helpful to fellow researchers who
decide to visit. One of the things we've really enjoyed are attending a
couple of the Festas in VFC, but often find it hard to get dates in
advance. Here is the festa schedule for the upcoming season:

Festa de São Miguel Arcanjo | Procissão do Trabalho - May 11
Festas do Feriado Municipal – São João da Vila - June 24
Festa do Coração de Jesus (Ribeira das Tainhas) - July 20
Festa de Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Ponta Garça) - August 3
Festa do Santíssimo Sacramento (Água d`Alto) - August 24
Festa do Senhor Bom Jesus da Pedra - August 31

We attended Sao Joao last year and it was wonderful - crazy, but
wonderful! Advice to attendees - rest up in advance! A few years ago we
attended the Festa de Sao MIguel Arcanjo and it was extremely moving.

The other thing I've noted from time to time on this board is that folks
would like to rent apartments in VFC which are also a bit difficult to
find. Here are 3 links provided by the Camara.

2014-02-20 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
That is a tough one to answer, his first name in Portuguese is Joao As far as
his last name if I were to guess I would say Henrique but that does not seem
right. When you say (in the records), what records? In order to search the
islands in the Acores it is important to know the Freguesia (village) where he
came from. You should search all US sources to determine that. One way would be
to find when he came to the US and then search passport records if they are
available.

Jan 5, 1692. Sebastiao , son of Antonio Ferreira and ? da Costa. Luzia Carvalha

Does Roiz stand for Rodrigues?)

All from Ginetes.

Erica, the bride's record is pretty clear, it states that she was baptized in

baptized in Sao Jose (PD), he discharged his obligation (desobrigado) in the
Church of Nossa Senhora da Asumpcao, on the island of Santa Maria.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Americanized: John Harris

2014-02-20 Thread Dano
You need a little more info than St. Jorge,to be able to identify where to
look. Was St. Jorge the island of St. Jorge, or the parish of St. Jorge, on
some other island? Start with the most recent data you have, plug that into an
immigration website such as the Ellis Island foundation.org, and backtrack from
there. In order to be able to do this you will need names, dates and places;
what were his vitals: when was he born - where? when was he married - where?
when did he die - where? when did he immigrate - where? Did he immigrate to the
east coast (New England), or, west coast, (CA, HI), etc.? Did he come as a
fisherman, whaler, or was he a farmer or factory worker? With a common surname
like Harris, be prepared to do some work. If you can identify his birth name,
that will be a major step. Let me know when you have some details, I may be
able suggest a more specific course for you to follow.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Catholic Church in Cambridge, MA

2014-02-20 Thread Sandy Dolan

Hi Karen,

My grandparents also attended St. Anthony's church, now on the corner of
Cambridge Street and Cardinal Mederois ( Way or Street). The original old
wooden church was across on that street a little further down. My dad and
his brothers and sisters went there as well.
My grandmother was Deolinda (Augusta) Souza and was born in 1882, also from
Angra, Terceira. I was wondering if you had any more information about your
grandmother who's last name was Augusta. I have been trying so hard to find
out how many brothers and sisters she had and there names. I know she had a
brother Joseph and a brother Bernard. My Dad is now 86 (soon to be 87 next
month) and was the baby of 8 kids in his family and the last older brother
he has left has dementia, sadly. My dad doesn't remember any family history
to tell of. I was only 12 when my grandmother died in 1972 and back then I
didn't have the bright idea of asking her about her family and growing up
in the Azores. She spoke mostly Portuguese so I never really had a
conversation by myself with her. My aunt would translate. But I loved her
just the same and now want to know all about her (when it's too late!).
Just wondering if there might be a connection I could work with!
Thanks!
Sandy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Antonio da Rosa (Roza) Maciel (Marcial) baptized Nov 1860, S. Mattheus Magdalena, Pico

2014-02-20 Thread Betty Fredericks
Hello,

I think it was last summer when helpful researchers told me that, when my
husband's great-grandmothe came to MA/US, she was coming over to stay with
her brother, Antonio da ROSA. Would that be a completely different
family to the MACIEL /MARCIAL family?

From memory before 7 am, I'll summarize the family. The father was
Laurindo / Lucia da ROSA from Faial / Fayal, and the mother was Clara
Emilia from Pico. I believe Antonio and his brother, Manuel da ROSA,
were born in Faial during 1860's. Their younger sister was Filomena da
ROSA, b~1872 on Faial. In early 1880's she married on Faial to
Francisco MOURA from Sao Miguel.Their 5+ children were born on
Faial. I'm told that Francisco probably died ~1905, and Filomena and
her 5 children all came over to Cambridge, MA, between 1905 and 1915.

I was able to ask a descendant of Filomena, who is now in his 80's, and
he has no memory of his mother having uncles with the da ROSA name.On
USA census records, she was known as Phoebe MOURA, and she died in
1949. I haven't had any luck finding her brothers in US census
records, but I suspect they remained in Cambridge or Somerville at least to
start with. They married here after they arrived.

Most of New England has been smothered with SNOW, so the only research
most of us can do is - from home.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

P.S.
For my husband's family, I research PACHECO / MOURA, and the MOURA
siblings,
the sisters married PERRY (PEREIRA?) and MEDEIROS.
(Always looking to find out how Antonio PACHECO was related to the other
PACHECO's
in Greater Boston, MA.)

I am looking for the church that my grandparents likely attended
when they lived in Cambridge from 1921 to about 1924. I'm guessing
it was probably East Cambridge, as that was where many other ethnic
groups first settled.
My grandparents, Joe Machado Silva (1894) and Maria Augusta Silva
(1897) came from Angra, Terceira to the area in May of 1921. Joe
had several brothers and sisters that lived in Cambridge. I do not
have an address. Their first born child, Paul L. Silva was born
there. I know that because I found him on the Massachusetts birth
Index on Ancestry.com. I have the book, volume and page and I am
requesting a copy. I would like to also get the church record.
Paul only lived a few months and died in 1922 (again I found him on
the Massachusetts Death index and have requested the civil record).
Knowing where he was baptized and buried would be great. My
grandparents left Cambridge for California in 1924 so it must have
been so hard to leave their first born there.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Gardine

2014-02-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Maria Roque,

Well, that's the problem. Don't believe everything you read in the trees
you find on the Internet, whether they are posted on Ancestry,
FamilySearch, Geni, or what have you.

When you discover a tree, you need to be able to retrace that tree
yourself. If the tree that you found does not allow you to do that, it's
not that good of a tree. It needs to have names, dates, and places. If
the names are places are from the Azores, they should be written in proper
Portuguese. If things are completely misspelled, the person doesn't know
how to do Portuguese research.

Somewhat over simplistic. You can make a file/family/project with one

Hi Sandy,

I know what you mean about wanting to ask questions when it is too late. Have
done that many times myself.

As far as Maria Augusta goes, Augusta is her middle name. You probably already
know that during periods of Azorean history, most women only listed their given
and middle names; not their surname as we would. What a trick to play on us
when we want to find them. Her actual family name Goncalves. I have a list of
all her siblings and Bernard is not among them. Her mother was Maria
Clementina and as far as found, no Augustas among them. So sorry to not be a
bigger help.

Happy hunting,

how many brothers and sisters she had and there names. I know she had a brother
Joseph and a brother Bernard. My Dad is now 86 (soon to be 87 next month) and
was the baby of 8 kids in his family and the last older brother he has left has
dementia, sadly. My dad doesn't remember any family history to tell of. I was
only 12 when my grandmother died in 1972 and back then I didn't have the bright
idea of asking her about her family and growing up in the Azores. She spoke
mostly Portuguese so I never really had a conversation by myself with her. My
aunt would translate. But I loved her just the same and now want to know all
about her (when it's too late!). Just wondering if there might be a connection
I could work with!

Thanks!

Sandy

I am looking for the church that my grandparents likely attended when they
lived in Cambridge from 1921 to about 1924. I'm guessing it was probably
East Cambridge, as that was where many other ethnic groups first settled.

My grandparents, Joe Machado Silva (1894) and Maria Augusta Silva (1897)
came from Angra, Terceira to the area in May of 1921. Joe had several
brothers and sisters that lived in Cambridge. I do not have an address.
Their first born child, Paul L. Silva was born there. I know that because I
found him on the Massachusetts birth Index on Ancestry.com. I have the
book, volume and page and I am requesting a copy. I would like to also get
the church record. Paul only lived a few months and died in 1922 (again I
found him on the Massachusetts Death index and have requested the civil
record). Knowing where he was baptized and buried would be great. My
grandparents left Cambridge for California in 1924 so it must have been so
hard to leave their first born there.

2014-02-20 Thread Cheri Mello
That's good to know.

One of the goals of this list is to teach people to read the documents
whereby they can extract the pertinent information to build their trees.
In order to do this, they need to go over the learning curve and utilize
people on this list who can read or are native Portuguese speakers. I'd
like to make it as easy for the readers so I'm asking everyone to state
whether it's a baptism, marriage, etc, post the link to the record, and
give the location of the record (right side; bottom left, etc). And as
they learn to read, they can say what they are able to read and what they
need help with.

So I'll probably state the frequently, as we get new members weekly on this
list!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Gardine

2014-02-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Maria Roque,

And I can put George Washington, Pope Francis, and Lucille Ball in my tree
and post it online. It doesn't make it true.

I know it seems that I'm being a bit facetious, but you really have to
evaluate the source. The true source is what we call the primary source.
That's the document that is generated at the time of the event. Like a
birth certificate which verifies the birth date, a marriage certificate
verifying the marriage date. Secondary sources are things generated after
the event or things gleaned from a primary source. Many times, you need 2
or 3 of these to agree with each other. Portuguese research uses the
baptism records as a secondary source for the birth record. We don't have
the luxury of trying to find 2 or 3 other sources to verify the birth
date. But if the person died within the last 100 years or so, we can order
their death certificate and get the death date (primary source) and get the
birth date (secondary source) from the death record.

So until you can find the true source of the name (which document it is
coming from), no one is going to be able to tell you with any type of
confidence what that name is. It's going to be a bunch of guesses.
Someone has seen the original record and transcribed it. Who is that
transcriber? How good are that at transcribing? Reading Portuguese
records? Dealing with the paleography? I've seen some really poor jobs
done by Ancestry (which I was told was outsourced). American censuses with
the last name of Turner (quite common) and written Turner as clear as day
on the census which were transcribed completely wrong. There are also
whole areas in the midwest part of the United States that migrated west
from Indiana. How was that transcribed by the Ancestry folks? As India,
another country. So I went to the actual source and saw that all these
people came from the state of Indiana and not the country of India. The
Ancestry transcribers can also mess up Iowa with Indiana as state
abbreviations changed over time. The Ancestry transcribers apparently were
not trained in historic place name abbreviations.

Hope this illustrates why going to the actual source is so important in
research.

history to tell of. I was only 12 when my grandmother died in 1972 and back

growing up in the Azores. She spoke mostly Portuguese so I never really had
a conversation by myself with her. My aunt would translate. But I loved her

Just wondering if there might be a connection I could work with!
 Thanks!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Please help to read my grandmothers birth registration

2014-02-20 Thread Sandy Dolan
Unfortunately Chris, I know nothing about computers except how to write a
post. I'm sorry, I just assumed the picture would come out as I was seeing
it. :/ Thank you so much for helping Leonard!

Yes, that is the one that is hers, Manuel Jose and Maria Maxima. I just
want to translate the whole page so I can read all the information. A few
questions are;

Is Jose her Dad's middle name? I know the family last name was Augusta.
Is Maxima Maria's maiden name or middle name?
Does it list any brother or sister she may have had?

This group is great! I never thought I'd find anyone to help me. Thank you
so very much!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Wondering if anyone has this couple?

2014-02-20 Thread blackice430
Hi everyone. I have been looking for Simao de Souza and his wife Theresa
(Ursula) Machado. She sometimes goes by that name Ursula. They are from Sao
Jose Ponta Delgada Sao Miguel.
I am looking for their marriage. They started having kids from 1710 to 1721. I
have 5 children .  Theresa died in 1724. Simao remarried in 1724 and died in
1726. I have searched a lot for this couples marriage and just can't find it. I
even looked in Baptisms for simao figuring it wasn't a popular name, but that
was not the case. I guess in those years it was.LOL Oh well , Don't know where
to go from here. Looked at Simao 2nd marrage and it only gives Theresa's name .
No parents. Anyone related to these people?

Thanks once again.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Gardine

2014-02-20 Thread Maria Roque
Cheri

Thank you
I eventually did find his baptism record
So I do have the right Gaudino, father, grandfather in the document but did
some running around as birth year in a tree were wrong and on the other was
right then it was looking in S. Pedro and S. Roque found him in S. Roque

On Thursday, February 20, 2014 4:06:29 PM UTC-5, Cheri Mello wrote:

Hope this illustrates why going to the actual source is so important in
 research.

not that good of a tree. It needs to have names, dates, and places. If
the names are places are from the Azores, they should be written in proper

Liliana, If it's Areia, look for "d'Areia" or "da Area" and maybe in Calheta, where I found some who are originally from Piedade, Pico. Calheta is where my own Areia family is from. Maybe we're related. You might consider getting the Family Finder DNA test, too. I have written about it on my website:www.dholmes.com/dna.htmlGood luck.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Thanks for the thoughts, Rick. My biggest obstacle is not having any records that refer to his origins on Sao Jorge. I only have a notation in the family Bible: John Harris, born on Sao Jorge, the Western Islands, and the same on his marriage certificate. I have no idea which village he came from. I found nothing in the Ellis Island records. I'll keep at it. This is like a treasure hunt!On Thursday, February 20, 2014 7:24:40 AM UTC-8, Richard Francis Pimentel wrote:That is a tough one to answer, his first name in Portuguese is Joao As far as his last name if I were to guess I would say Henrique but that does not seem right. When you say (in the records), what records? In order to search the islands in the Acores it is important to know the Freguesia (village) where he came from. You should search all US sources to determine that. One way would be to find when he came to the US and then search passport records if they are available. All I know at this point is that my great-grandfather's name was John Harris (in the records) and he was from Sao Jorge. Any ideas on what his Portuguese (birth) name might have been? Thanks!--
