[AZORES-Genealogy] Morisson name in Azores, late 18th/early 19th c.

2015-11-01 Thread linda

hi all,

Can anyone provide information on this name/family?

Luis Antonio da Costa Morisson signed as a witness to the marriage of one
of my 4xGGP's on Terceira in 1813, and I'm very curious as to what the
connection could possibly have been.

I know there were English and American merchants and their families in the
islands during this period, but the references I've checked (Familias
Faialenses and the book by Francis M. Rogers) don't include the name. If
anyone can suggest other potential leads, I'd appreciate it too.

Here is the record, in case any one is curious to see it:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-C-1813-1828/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-C-1813-1828_item1/P4.html

right side (Antonio Machado Fagundes and Victoria Angelica)

The marriage took place in Santa Barbara, where much of my family was
situated. All three of the witnesses were from Angra and do not appear to
be relatives-- all unusual for the time and place in what I've seen in the
other marriage records for my family there.

thanks in advance for any help with this little mystery,

Linda

I have found while researching my Ribeiras families, that many records
are filed in Lajes. My Silveira Soares family there lived in Terras,
between the two churches.

A marriage record may be found in Lajes , but baptisms in Ribeiras, then
obito in Lajes for the same person

Thank you for your responses on the name Adriano. Now I can go back to the
Hawaiian records to see if I can find the name in some sort of variant
form. It is probably misspelled in some way that I haven't uncovered yet.

Thank you, Linda...that helps. I, too, want that word to be Lorenzo...but
the first letter is like the other "S" in the record.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Manuel-son of Manuel Silveira of Ribeiras Pico Azores b. 25 Jul 1741

2015-11-01 Thread linda

Hi Evee,

Here's a stab at it.

I can't read the father's second surname, but I don't think it's Costa
though it could be da Costa.

The mother's name looks like Maria da Encarnacao (Maria do En CarnaCam)

I read the date the same as you do. I can't make out what it says after
Ribeirinhas.

I see "foi baptizado por mim o Cura desta Igza" Igza = igresia, Cura =
curate

Godmother is Roza da ConCeiCam (Rosa da Conceicao) m.er do Sargento (?)
Balthazar Vieyra. I don't know if it is "sargento"; my brain wants to
turn it into Lorenzo, but letter by letter, sargento seems to fit better.

The margin note is Latin and means "(he/it) has it not" I've never seen
that before and have no idea what it means.

best wishes,

Linda

Thank you, Denis, for explaining that there is a Santa Barbara in Santa Maria.
I do not think the person Elaine found in that search is my elusive Maria
Cristo.  Actually, the village where her family lived in Sao Miguel was called
Lomba da Santa Barbara during the time they lived there.Celeste Celeste Perry

Elaine, the information I received from Maria Cristo's brother's
great-grandson, Dickie,  was that he had found her arriving in Boston on the
Credic.  At that time, I did not look at the actual passenger list.  I don't
have any information that puts her or any of the family on the island of Santa
Maria.
Eliseu, I can't be sure that Maria Cristo was baptized "on the spot" before she
married.  I did look at her marriage to Filipe Perreira da Silva (or several
other surnames they used over the years of their marriage; Perreira, da Silva,
Silva, Perry).  He is buried here in Hayward, CA as Fillip da Silva.  His
gather is also buried in the same cemetery; surname, Perry, as is his brother.
So, surnames also vary. Celeste Perry ccgran...@yahoo.com

Celeste,

I don't know if this makes a difference but I looked up the ship's manifest
and it says she was born in Santa Barbara (City), Santa Maria(Country). Is
there such a place as Santa Barbara in Santa Maria?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Interpretation of Baptismal Record for Claudia, daughter of Florencia - Ponta Delgada, Flores 1806

2015-11-01 Thread João Ventura
Hi David,

Sorry for not replying before, but I wanted to check the CCA records before
doing so. I confirm my belief that this Florencia daughter of Maria de
Fraga Nunes is the same single mother Florencia that is your ancestor and
my wife's. Can you check if you match my wife in FTDNA (her name is
Alexandra Ribeiro)?

As to the clues regarding the identity of the father, I'm not into
200-year-old speculative history to be honest. Yes, the fact that her male
children are all named 'José de Avelar' seems strange but it could be the
father or someone that was kind to them for some other reason. However,
looking at the fact that this was a single mother, daugther of another
single mother, well... let's just say that her reputation might not have
been the best.

Did you manage to track more of this family records?

I need some help with the following baptism record:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PIC-LJ-RIBEIRAS-B-1732-1749/PIC-LJ-RIBEIRAS-B-1732-1749_item1/P74.html

Manuel is the first complete baptism record on the page at the right.

I don't know what the note in the left margin means. It seems to be the
same for most people in this book of baptisms.

This is what I think I see in the baptism record:

Manuel, son of Manuel Silveira Costa???[I can't read the mother's
name...looks like Rozia da ]
residents of this freguesia parish of Santa Barbara Ribeiras

born 25th day of the month of July 1741 ??? baptism by me [I don't
understand the abbreviation for his "title"] of this church underwritten
and assigned the 30th day of this month and this year.

For godparents: Bartholomu Homem husband of Maria Silveria and Roza da
[??] wife of So??? Balthazar

I don't understand the writing after Balthazar.

Pretty sketchy, I know, but I am having a terrible time reading the writing
with all the abreviations of this priest, Thome Cardoso Machado???

What I'm looking for, of course, are the names within the record and any
information specific to the individuals...beyond the "boiler-plate"
language that appears in most of the records of this time and place.

I'm looking for Manuel Silveira Costa who was the husband of my 3rd great
grand aunt...Maria Silveira...all of Ribeiras, Pico, I believe.

Thank you for any help!

FREGUESES means the ones who belong to that FREGUESIA. They were under the

I suggest you not use the letter "z" unless it is clear that is the correct

The oral history I had did not go very far back in time until I found a

village in Sao Miguel where the family lived before Seraphine, her brother,
immigrated to RI. I have been able to collect information about the lives of
those of her family that immigrated followed Seraphine to RI from the census
and marriage reords.

In 2007, I visited Lomba da Santa Barbara and found that all the church records
I needed were in the archives in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. I spent a week
going through the church records looking for my “elusive Maria Cristo.” Maria
Cristo’s parents had names that were not very common so the task was easier

I had been told by her daughter, Mary Cruz, that Maria Cristo was 5 years old
when her father died. I looked in all the records up to the time of his death.
 Found nothing.

In 2009, I returned to Sao Miguel thinking maybe Maria Cristo had been raised
by this family and was not biologically related. Or that she was the daughter
of an older sibling that was not married and raised by her grandparents.

I found that 3 of the older siblings had died young so I ruled them out. Then
I thought the family may have been visiting one of the villages surrounding
Lomba da Santa Barbara when she was born and was baptized in a village that was
near Lomba da Santa Barbara. I looked at all the villages that abutted Lomba
da Santa Barbara and could find neither a Maria born to her parents or to them
listed as grandparents to a Maria.

So….I left Sao Miguel with the mystery unsolved. As I worked more and more on
the other 7 Portuguese immigrant family for me and my husband, I left Maria
Cristo waiting for me to take up the search.

I have been following the Azores list daily, with my eye on anyone mentioning a
Maria born in Sao Miguel who could have a connection to my “elusive Maria
Cristo.” None has shown up YET. Any suggestions or help is appreciated.

It also says at bottom of record they received dispensation because they

Given the time period and with so few people on the island, they are likely

I suggest you not use the letter "z" unless it is clear that is the correct
letter. The z I see is quite distinctive, on you can see it on the opposite
page on first line; whereas the s at end of name is much like a lot of
letters at end of words, just a downward stroke completing words with a
flourish because it is the priest's style.

I thought all this info was on line in book form somewhere.

Celeste, do you think that she may not have been baptized in the Azores (or the
record was lost) and she was re-baptiaed here in the USA before her marriage???
That happened in the Azores (not here) to my greatgreatgrandma, records were
not available at the time of her marriage so she was re-baptized right before
she married. Just a thought.

It has been a long time since I tried to find documentation for the birth of my
husband, Robert Edward Perry’s, paternal grandmother. I call her the, “elusive
Maria Cristo.”

I began my search in 2001. At that time, there were limited resources on line
so I contacted relatives and researchers I found living in Rhode Island and MA.
The oral history I had did not go very far back in time until I found a
great-grandson of her brother, Jose. That helped some since I then knew the
village in Sao Miguel where the family lived before Seraphine, her brother,
immigrated to RI.

Cristo’s parents had names that were not very common so the task was easier
than it may have been. Joao de Morais (several spellings) and Jacinta Libianna
(several variations of spellings) were not as hard as some names to pick out in
the records. I found Maria Cristo had several siblings and I recorded all of
them.

Hi Celeste,

Do you think the record that Jose wrote July 31, 1909, might be the ship
entering the US, i.e. on US records? Of have you tried these? If not, I can
try Ancestry for these.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Maria Cristo Morais, Lomba da Santa Barbara, Sao Miguel, Azores

2015-11-01 Thread 'celeste perry' via Azores Genealogy
Thank you, Aaron, for your interest in helping me find "the elusive Maria
Cristo's" baptismal record.  The information I have is that "Maria Moraes
arrived July 31, 1909, age 25, est. birth yr. 1884, female, Portuguese, Port of
departure: Srt. Michaels, Az, Portugal; ship name, Cretic; arriving at Boston,
MA; last residence, Azores; birthplace, St. Barbara, Azores."
I had several people in RI and MA helping me try to find information about
Maria Cristo at that time.  In 2005, Joao Ventura (the researcher) told me
there was no passport record for Maria Cristo leaving the Azores because there
is a book missing from October 1908 to December, 1909.
In 2006, I received an email from a great-grandson of Maria Cristo's brother,
Jose.  He wrote "On Ancestry.com, I found Maria Cristo immigrated July 31,
1909."
Thank you for your help in solving this mystery.CelesteCeleste Perry

[AZORES-Genealogy] Confirmation/help with Santa Cruz, Graciosa marriage record

2015-11-01 Thread Lee
I believe I finally found (with the help of JR pointing me in the right
direction with his translation help last night) the marriage record I've
been looking for:

4th of October 1673
Antonio Vaz Sodre filho de Antonio Correia Serrde?? and Maria Viera
(defunta)
to
Anna Gaspar filha de Gaspar da Vis and Anna Fernandes (defuntos)

Top, right record

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-SC-SANTACRUZ-C-1672-1709/GRA-SC-SANTACRUZ-C-1672-1709_item1/P11.html

Can/would someone please confirm that I've read the above correctly?

Also, I'm seeing names (padrinhos?) of Andre Fernandes e Deogo ?? de ??;
Manoel Vaz Sodre directly after Anna's parents names.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.
