Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Vila Franca Records

2019-06-30 Thread Terri Santos
I wanted to chime in here and say that I am currently working on the *Vila
Franca Matriz marriage records for 1763-1799* (since there already is an
index of names starting 1800-1900)
I currently have Apr 1763- July 1777 marriages done and will definitely
share with the group when its all done.
I think it would be fantastic if volunteers transcribe and share their
index lists. I still think its super important for people to confirm
names, dates with the original documents on the CCA site in case something
was interpreted wrong. The documents online may have alot more information
that might be important that we are not including on the transcribed
indexes like...places of birth, sidenotes of info...etc...

Thanks for explaining Cheri. And yes... i have already noticed some of my
own mistakes...ie... writing ‘Antonio’ instead of ‘Antonia’ under the
brides name.
I want to continue with the next index years at some point and I’ll try to
do better!
But for now its off to the parade to celebrate the Raptors victory!!! 😁

island...scroll right to the bottom if that page and the Sao Pedro index i

If she was baptized in Ponta Delgada, so then I'll look thereperhaps

Here's the marriage record I found in SM-VFC for Francisco and Maria. Here
it mentions Sao Sebastiao, Ponta Delgada for her again.

this is the death record for Maria

at marriage..

2019-05-25 Thread Terri Santos
OOPS...Pressed post too quick and I wasn`t done writing
In the baptism record I found below i found that she was from Sao Sebastiao
in Ponta Delgada along with a brother Joao. But both children were baptised
in different places I think.
Can anyone share some clarity to what might be going on here.
Thanks

I`m trying to get some clarity for one Maria de Jesus in my files. She
married and died in Sao Miguel Vila Franca do Campo.
Her death record on 10 July 1896 states she died at the age of 53 years
old. That makes her birth year c.1843, but that would make her 11 years
old at marriage.

wife's name was Marianna da Piedade. Did you find her name as such anywhere
on the childrens records?
well...take a look and see.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Passport records for Sao Miguel Island before 1875

2018-04-08 Thread Terri Santos
Through one of my Sao Miguel Island records, I found that an ancestor was
'ausente' (away) in Brazil at the time of his grandsons baptism in
1866. Seems there are no passport records earlier than 1875 for Ponta
Delgada. I see that passport records go back farther for Horta and Angra
do Heroismo. Has anyone found Sao Miguel ancestors on those passport
records? I looked a little through them, but not sure if its worth the
search.
Thanks
Terri Santos

I don't have anyone with the surname Raleza in my family but just wanted to say

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: The Power of the Azores Genealogy Google Group and DNA

2018-03-09 Thread Terri Santos
Hi Pat,
I believe my cousin has been in touch with you already as she is starting
her research on her dads side. I have been trying to help her as well.
I saw this post and perhaps you have already found much more by now.
You said in this message that you didn't have much info on the Rosa's . I
found from Jose Francisco's first marriage to Maria Felicia do Coracao de
Jesus
Rosa born 20 July 1860 in Feteira, Horta, Faial Isl. and she was baptized
on 29 July 1860

from Jose's second marriage to Virginia Emilia was
Rosalinda born 11 July 1874 in Feteira, Horta, Faial Isl and she was
baptized on 23 July 1874

Sorry if this is old news

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ancestor Trip to Azores...Azores Airlines Fare Sale

2018-01-06 Thread Terri Santos
My parents are coming back today from their 2 week vacation on Sao Miguel. I
know the flight there was fine with Azores Airlines and the stewardesses were
very helpful with them. Seems there was a half hour delay going and we'll see
how coming back will be. Really bad weather right now in Canada which may
understandably be cause for another delay.

2017-11-05 Thread Terri Santos
This is wonderful Manoel! Thank you! I had Maria your descendant on my
list of Lazaro's children and you helped me with quite a bit more going
back. I descend from his son Antonio Soares who married Maria de Medeiros
on 24 Jan 1734 in Sao Pedro, Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande.
I did have Lazaro's father as unknown (is that the 'N' person you have in
your chart? and his mother as Maria Velha... not Clara Velha. See the link
below

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-VF-SAOPEDRO-B-1630-1699/SMG-VF-SAOPEDRO-B-1630-1699_item1/P117.html

Did you happen to have Lazaro's mother as Clara somewhere else? Perhaps she
was Maria Clara?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande-Need help with husbands name on record for Barbara Soares

2017-11-03 Thread Terri Santos
Just found a family line from Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande. I have their
childrens records, this death record and STILL cannot figure out Barbara
Soares' husbands name. It looks like it starts with the letter 'L' in all
the records and last name is Rodrigues or Rois. Can someone please help
with this writing? Maybe I've been away from doing my geneology work too
long. Thanks in advance

Hi Eliseu, I've been helping to look for a few names for my cousins maternal
ancestors and she has a Joao de Medeiros (born 1902) married to a Maria do
Patrocina and another Joao de Medeiros (born 1871) married to a Maria Jose de
Andrade. Their records show that they lived in Ribeira Seca but baptisms and
marriages were in Sao Miguel church in Vila Franca do Campo

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: How to format names on family trees?

2014-08-03 Thread Terri
At one point I did have my surnames entered as D*e* Pimentel or D*os*
Santosbut there were soo many people with the de, da, dos
etc...that it became a task in half to find the right people through my
data base. It was suggested to me also to attach the de, da, dos..etc...to
the given name and although i may still have many people who are Maria de,
or Joao dos..it became a little easier to find people on my list. The
exception is if the persons given name is for example, Maria de Jesus. It
took me a long time to go back through all the names I had collected
already and make this change, but I find it was worth it. Now I have to
take the time to make sure I record* where* a person may have been recorded
as ie..in the marriage record; Joao de Pimentel Andrade and then at his
death just Joao de Pimentel.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Searching for Jacinta Emilia Soares in Ribeira Cha, Sao Miguel, Azores

2014-03-20 Thread Terri
Hi Terry
I think we have two different Jacinta's. My ancestor is Jacinta Emilia
Soares married to Antonio Ambrosio de Araujo. They had 11 children born in
Agua d'Alto. I have never seen the name Sentinella in any records but I
will go back again and check through what I have (just in case) I don't
have her death record because it wouldn't be available online (circa 1942)
. Funny though how two people with almost the exact same name were born in
the same place and died in the same place. Maybe there is a connection
somewhere along the lines.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Miguel to Brazil before 1875...Passport records or Passenger lists?

2014-03-07 Thread Terri
I have an ancestor from Vila Franca do Campo that married in August 1874.
His marriage record said that his father, Manuel Pimentel Andrade was 'away
in Brazil'. The CCA site has passport records starting at 1875 (of course
only one year AFTER the year I need to look up...) So CCA site is out. Is
there any way to find the passenger ship list maybe on a Brazilian site
somwhere for when he might have arrived in Brazil if I can't when he left
the Azores?

there like 'filho' or paternoall ending in the letter 'o' which makes

[AZORES-Genealogy] Barnacle Love, a fiction book about an Azorean immigrants experience

2013-12-01 Thread Terri
I bought this book and enjoyed reading the fictional characters' journey
from the Azores to Canada. I just thought with the holidays arriving, some
folks might want to have something new to read or buy it for someone you
know.
I've also just started his latest book 'Kicking the Sky' ...also fictional
but from the viewpoint of young boys of Azorean immigrants in Toronto
during the time of the murder of the 'Shoeshine boy'...which was a true
incident in the 70's that shook the whole Portuguese community.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Exorcisms? of children in Ginetes documents

2013-11-06 Thread Terri
Thanks for all your answers. It gave me more insight about why a child's
document would say 'exorcism'. I had first even thought that it could have
been a seisure or something they saw in a child and mistook it for being
'possessed by the devil' since they wouldn't have known much about medical
conditions like that in that era. But your explanations made alot of
sense.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ginetes.....Salanca? Is it a name or a place?

2013-11-04 Thread Terri
I was searching on the CCA site for a death record for someone in my
Ginetes line. I thought I had the right person but now I see another word/
name in the documents after his name that makes me wonder. I have a
marriage record for Manuel de Sousa Carvalho x Anna da Estrella . But
in the death record I found, I read 'Manuel Carvalho Salanca' who
was married to Anna de Estrella .Sometimes I am seeing ' Lomba' after some
names and I assume this is a place but is there an area of Ginetes called '
Salanca?' or could this be a last name and maybe I have the wrong death
record.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder test

2013-07-29 Thread Terri

I had my brother swab for the YDNA testing (because my dad refused to do
it..) and then upgraded that to the Family Finder. I got the breakdown for
that already. BUTIf I wanted to take advantage of this great new price
and could convince my mom to do a swab for FF, would I get any real
difference in the results? Or would I just be paying again for pretty much
the same information to be sent back to me since my brothers test already
includes male and female lines

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree DNA Sale

2013-04-21 Thread Terri
Hi Cheri, I had my brother do the YDNA test and then upgraded it once (I
think to YDNA37 or 67?) If I were interested in chosing one of the choices
on sale, (perhaps the Family Finder) would it be considered an upgrade? or
a brand new test? Sorry...I know...I'm one of those last minute shoppers
Thanks

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for Bed and Breakfasts in Ponta Delgada this month

2013-04-09 Thread Terri
I was asking about the B&B for another cousin of mine who is going this
month to Sao Miguel. They are from my maternal side and unfortunately there
isn't any close relatives living there anymore. I'm not staying in the B&B
myself because I'll be staying with my dads side of the family in Agua
d'Alto when I go in June for two weeks. Yeah!
But thanks for the info. I've passed it on and hopefully it helps them find
something quick.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bischo/Bisho

2013-03-22 Thread Terri
My father and his sibllings have the same parents but a few of them have
different or slightly different last names. There's Santos, dos Santos,
Amaral, and Macaroco. I always heard that my uncle Jose Macaroco had a
been registered with a nickname by his grandmother (who liked a drink or
two...) and she registered him with the nickname 'Macaroco' which means
'cob'...like corn on the cob. Researching a bit farther back now...I've
found another ancestor with this name but spelled 'Massaroco'. I've
haven't been able yet to go further back and see how far this name or
nickname goes...but it'll be interesting to find out when it started or how
it's changed through so many years.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Entering your places in your genealogy program

2013-03-12 Thread Terri
Thanks for bringing up this topic. It's a good reminder that I've yet to
be consistent throughout my whole program( mostlly on how I'm spelling the
names of the places like ie..Azores or AcoresSao Miguel or San
Miguel.) One day soon I should go through my data and fix the way I'm
typing things in. But mostly in the Legacy program it divides where
someone is born, baptized, married, died, buried. I usually type in for
ie..
BIRTH-Sao Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel Isl., Azores
BAPT-Matriz Sao Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel Isl. Azores
MARRIAGE-Sao Lazaro church, Agua d'Alto, Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel
Isl., Azores

Glad I confirmed some of your information.  I have found that sometimes the
fraternal lodges have great genealogy information.  Digging it out of them can
sometimes be difficult and that is why, when I had the opportunity, I created
the death record database.  There is also one for the UPEC (men's lodge) that
the FHC microfilmed.

I think you might find additional information by using death certificates,
etc.  My big breakthrough when researching my son-in-law's great-grandfather
was the voter registration.  The census for 1890 did not exist and I was told
if he had been naturalized and voted there was evidence of that.

I found the original forms he signed each time he voted and on one of them it
said he was born in Flores!!!  I looked at all the villages in Flores (thank
God it is not a large island) and found him.  Talk about doing the victory
dance, I did one.

The Perry name comes from my husband.  His Perry grandfather was Filipe Pereira
da Silva, born in Lajes do Pico.  My husband and his father were born in RI and
Felipe used Pereira, Silva and sometimes Perry as surnames in RI and CA.  If
any of this sounds familiar, let me know and I can give you more info.

Hello Celeste--

Your information is right-on.  Jerry Simpson is my 1/2 brother.  I note your
last name is Perry--are we related I wonder?   I was born Linda Catron to
Maximiliana Perry Leonard's daughter, Lena.  I was adopted at 5 years old and
grew up in the Bay Area.  I searched my real family out 30 plus years ago and
my search led me to Jerry and Maximilliana.  I am still very curious about
my heritage from the Azores.   I have met some of Maximillian's family in the
Visalia area--Mancebo's are cousins of mine.

Hi Terri,
I am not sure this information will help you; however, it may give you more
leads to look here for the information you need.
I looked in the death records for the U.P.P.E.C., a woman's Portugtuese
Fraternal Lodge.  They have merged with 3 others and are now The Portuguese
Fraternal Society of America.  In any case, the name "Maximilliana" was
different enough that I searched for that first name in the database.
   Here is what I found:
Maximiliana Leonard Ross died Nov. 12, 1983, from cardiopulmonary arrest,  a
death record exists, at the age of 80, in Visalia, CA (possibly an obit
exists).  She was born 8/19/1903 in Lowell, MA.  Her father was Joseph Perry
and her mother, Rose Bettencourt, both born in the Azores.
She belonged to council #64 then 104 then 64 again.  This probably means she
moved from Visalia to Artesia and back to Visalia.  You may find some
information there that can lead you to the village/island in the Azores you
seek.
The funeral palor was Hadley Funeral Chapel in Visalia (they may have some
information) and she is buried at the Visalia District Cemetery, again there
may be information there.
She had a grandson, Jerry J. Leonard Simpson and she was preceeded in death
by her husbands: John Leonard, Peter Zaris and Sol Leon Rosa.  Her children
were Helen Coito and Lena Hamond.
   Hope this helps you.  Celeste

Celeste

residents of ? Espirito Santo
Born on the 22nd of November 1762 at this church and was baptized on

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: LDS Family History Library Resources

2012-03-29 Thread Terri
I have ordered quite a few microfilms from the LDS (recently i ordered
10 of them!!)
Yes they are images of the original documents. Some are easier to
read than others.
The beauty of seeing the records on the CCA site is that they are
always available online, clear and you can easily
jump back and forth from a baptism, marriage or death record at the
click of the mouse.
It takes patience to focus and roll through the microfilms which can
only be viewed AT your local
Family history center. Even soordering the films have been a
great help to me and very valuable! You just have
to think ahead of which films would hold the most needed info for you.
In the past I've ordered a film or two and then regretted it just
because I paid for an extended loan and only found one or two
documents that i REALLY wanted.
Good luck!
