don't know your skill level, but I'd be happy to provide a transcription

Is top right the correct record?  I don't see any of the names you mention.

The top right is an obit dated 6 Dec 1726 for Maria Martins, married to 
Luiz Machado, and 31? years old.

She was 59 years old (more or less) and mossa (or mosza) donzella (moderns 
spelling I believe is "moça donzela" meaning a pure, unmarried woman).

She is daughter of Manuel Pereira P???, already deceased.  The second 
surname seems to start with same letter as what I believe is Pereira and as 
Paroquial on a later line.  I does not resemble the "S" in Silva on a later 
line or in Supra on the last line so "Seixas" doesn't seem to work.

I cannot make out how Antonio da Silva fits into this picture but his name 
is given in the sentence concerning the burial.  Perhaps he provided the 
grave?

No. It says (madrinha) Florencia, filha de Manoel Costa Branquinho. The 
godparents are same line as another researcher on the list. Antonia 
Pereira, is probably also the daughter of Manoel da Costa Branquinho and 
Barbara Pereira.

mulher Antonia Pereyra, baptised parish of ther parents, Pad- Reverendo,

children.  My grandmother, her daughter came at a different time. So thrilled 
to have found this.My skill level is zero!  It is good enough for me to be able 
scan the records on tombo.pt but I'm not able to translate.

and with very little practice, you can be reading them in no time.  
FamilySearch.org has a list of words used in the records on their site, and 
that's really all you need to get started.

Bill I could not figure out whether it was Ma or Mel.  The name Seixas is
Jewish.  There are many variations:  Sejas, Cejas, Aceijas, Seixas,
Aseixas, Acejas, Acezas, ... I have even seen it scribbled Xoxas.

Well, indirectly it helps. Florencia was one of his daughters. I bet 
Antonia Pereira is also his daughter, so you may want to look for her 
marriage. It has to be around 1732, give or take. At 18 years old, that 
would be 1730 to 1733. It could provide a clue on where they married or if 
they were from another village. Maybe look for more children and it might 
state if they are from another village. Maybe Lagoa.

JR,  I have the marriage for Antonia Pereira fa Manoel da Costa Branquinho
to Manoel Fernandes Freites on 9 Jan 1727 in Sao Roque.  I assigned that
marriage to the first Antonia b. 1709 because the second Antonia b. 1712
would have been only 15 yrs old.  Is it possible she would have married
that young?

JR, I don't know what disobligated means. Joam da Costa Furtado's death was
in Santa Cruz. If he was disobligated in Rosario could that be a clue to
his nal village?  Joam's death--top right.

He paid his obligation tax or fee at Quaresma-Lent= disobilgated. It was 
not Joao that was disobligated but Joseph Matos. I can only assume he is 
from Lagoa, which has such a variety of surnames, I could not even guess 
where he came from.

It do not think it has anything to do with a tax; it means to have fulfilled 
his Easter duty, i.e. gone to confession and taken communion sometime between 
Lent and the end of the Easter tide, as required by Church law.

I see no reference to any familial relationship with Leonor.  It does say 
she was left at the Roda Pública so any relationship is presumably 
unknown.  The godfather, Antônio José da Luz, is married and is the 
caretaker for the church (Sacristão).  Anna Ermelinda is also married.  
They could be married to each other, but since it doesn't say that I think 
it unlikely.  The only other thing it says about Anna Ermelinda that I can 
see is that she didn't sign the assento because she can't write.

(so
 was Perpetua as mentioned earlier in the documènt).

thank you once again Mara. The house without number is interesting because 
when her husband died 12 years before it also says the same thing about his 
house on Ribeira do Nabo. When he died, she said in her letters that they 
were about to lose the house because the Government would take it as my 
GGgrandfather, the eldest son, was not there to claim his inheritance. It 
appears she didn't lose the property unless she moved further along the 
Ribeira do Nabo.
 
Would this have been a street as we know it - or an area? I have no concept 
of how they would have lived, their houses etc. as all the information I 
can find is in Portuguese and is a big new challenge.I'll keep looking. 
Luckily I know a bit of French and Latin and that has helped. Wish they had 
Google Earth pictures back then!

I believe its a neighborhood, though there could be a street or road by that 
name, I don't know. . When I last visited in 2005 (and before) there was an 
artist cooperative there where they were trying to preserve the local 
handicrafts. I bought a small piece of the traditional Sao Jorge weaving among 
other items.

That is very interesting. How lucky to have visited. It is unlikely that I 
will ever get there, however one never knows for sure. I hadn't come across 
anything about traditional handcrafts so will look further into that. 
First, I will purchase a Portuguese/English dictionary. I could work out

everything. There are 2 doors, one for the men's side and one for the
women.  I guess they named it in honor of our lady of Fatima.  From Fatima,
Portugual, where the Virgin Mary appeared to the 3 children.  If you want

Thanks for the translation and its just about what my Uncle Manny told
me about the picture, all except the different entrances.  He said it
was a grocery store on one side and a liquor store on the other and
the picture was sent to my family after the passing of my
grandfather.One of the ladies in this picture is my grandfather,
Manuel Sousa's sister.  The property was turned over to her after the
death of my grandfather.  I know this is a long-shot, but if anyone
remembers the location of this property, please let me know.

That's what George said...the men's entrance was because of the liquor.

You never know with pictures.  I had one that I took around for a few
years.  I was helping a man at my FHC in Los Angeles on his Portuguese
lines.  We never found a connection (yet).  He asked me to come over around
Christmas and meet his parents from RI.  I came with old photos.  His father
identified some of the people in the photo!

women NEVER went inside a tasca. It was strictly a place for men. A woman 
might stand at the entrance and call to husband inside to come home (before he 
got too drunk!), but going inside was not OK if she valued her reputation. 
The idea of a woman standing at the bat downing cachaças with the best of 
them was a scandal. These general stores-taverns were generally 2 room affairs, 
one for the store and the other for the tavern. There was a connecting door 
so that the owner could go from one room to the other and tend to business 
single handed on both sides.

In case you find this arrangement strange, here in New England (Billy's 
Café on Bedford Street in Fall River comes to mind) always had a "Lady's 
Entrance" The front of the bar was exactly that: a bar with stools, some 
tables, a 
TV, a pool table, etc. It was just for the guys. The Lady's Entrance 
brought you to the back room, a "lounge" with booths. Billy's is still there, 
and 
still has the back entrance, now called a "Family Entrance" for those who 
are there for a meal in the lounge and not just a few frosties in the front. 
By the way, Billy's still serves the best chouriço plate this side of the 
Mississippi. A Happy Easter to all!

This is interesting.  The situation you describe is exactly what I found in
Australia many years ago.  Being an American woman, I was very curious as to
what went on in the men’s side of the place so, I got a job behind the bar
there. (Found it odd that I could work behind the bar but; not enter through
the men’s door!)  Nothing went on except for guys laughing and talking and
enjoying their booze.  All rather mundane stuff.  I didn’t realize this

of Francisco Pires Machado and his wife Dona Joana in this record.
Just as a point of order, however, the name "Pires" on this record is
spelled with an "s" at the end.

I believe I found a sibling of Isabel Ramos.  Could you translate this one
too?  The parents and grandparents appear to be the same.  This time it
lists the father as Jose Coelho Ramos. (I guess they were drinking less
vinho)  :-)

 

 I can't make out the first name or any of the date information.You can
find it at the baptisimos for Flores, Lagedo,  baptismo 1860-1910, page 102,
#4 baptism.  I believe the name is Antonio or Victorino??

Another thing that is confusing when you start out...they write like this:

Thequ ick brown fox ju mpedov er the lazy dog.

They run words together and then put spaces where there should not be any
space.

They also have contractions that we don't (when was the last time you
thought about contractions?  When you were 10 years old?)  LOL

"of the" is da (female) or do (male)
"in this" is nesta
I think those are in the word guide.  Those are just examples.  There are
more.

"digo" is basically and "oops."  I think the literal translation is "I meant
to say."  There's some in this record.

Verbs (at least in the romance languages) put the pronoun and conjugated
verb together.  In English, we would say "I baptized" but in Portuguese it's
all one word: baptiseu (spelling?) because the ending denotes that it's
first person, past tense.

I see the dates exactly as you see them.  

I believe the father, José Martins de Gouveia and his parents, Manuel 
Martins de Gouveia and Maria da Luz are all from Senhor Bom Jesus, Rabo de 
Peixe.  

I believe the mother, Barbara da Concepção and her parents, Luiz Pereira 
and Catherina Izabel are all from Nossa Senhora do Livramento, Rosto do 
Cão.

Manuel Martins de Gouveia and Maria da Luz are also my ancestors. They 
married in Rabo de Peixe on 11 feb 1820 - CCA #91.

I descend from their daughter Rosa born on 16 march 1833 - CCA #44. Your 
ancestor José was born in Rabo de Peixe on 3 jan 1824 - CCA #8.

What I also should have added to my first email was I really can’t discipher 
what is written in the margin. My working knowledge of Catholic sacramental 
records and the clear date of 1880 suggests it might be a death entry. Could 
you or someone else confirm my suspicions? Thanks again!

I believe it says "Premiera certidao em 7 de Novembro 1880" meaning that he 
needed a certification of this record.  This would probably be for a marriage 
or passport so this could be a hint as to his immigration time.

Interesting…as far as I know he never came to the US but there could be a 
second marriage because the birthdates of my grandmother’s known siblings begin

Hello Cousin,

I would like to know about José's descendant line and will be glad to share 
everything I have in my files.

My ancestor Rosa Emilia Carreiro, José's daughter, married Antonio Jacinto 
de Faria, in Rabo de Peixe on 1849. Their daughter Maria Carreiro married 
Manuel Tavares de Medeiros, in Rabo de Peixe on 1874, and they emigrated to 
Brazil on 1891.

As to Manuel Martins de Gouveia and Maria da Luz, I have researched all 
their ancestors. This line goes back to several settlers of the island of 
São Miguel, e.g.: Afonso Enes do Couto; João Lopes, dos Mosteiros; Diogo de 
Oliveira de Vasconcelos; Rui Tavares; Francisco Anes, da Praia; Martim Anes 
Furtado de Sousa; Afonso Anes da Costa Cogumbreiro; Pedro Velho de 
Travassos; Jorge Velho.

Not that this is helpful, but my family is from Rabo de Peixe and I have a 
relative named Francisco Martins Gouveia. I dont know his dates of birth 
but I a assume its in the mid 1800's. I'm just curious if he is related to 
any or your ancestors from the same time period.

Hi Sean,

I have done a lot of research in Rabo de Peixe and I think that all those 
"Martins de Gouveia" are connected. As far as I know they all descend from 
Manuel Martins Mascarenhas, from Rabo de Peixe born around 1610, and Maria 
de Gouveia, from Matriz da Ribeira Grande born on 1 sep 1613.

Do you have the names of the parents for your Francisco Martins de Gouveia?

My husband's aunt's father came to the U.S. to earn money to send for his wife 
and son from Portugal.  It took ten (10 years) before his wife finally got in 
the U.S.
Therefore, there is a ten year gap between his children.

  Interesting…as far as I know he never came to the US but there could be a 
second marriage because the birthdates of my grandmother’s known siblings begin 
a good 10 years later. Guess I have more digging to do! :)

I don't. I haven't researched that side of my family at all (My mother's 
side.) I have been working with one of my relatives to focus on my father's 
side for now. I don't want to overwhelm myself with information so one 
thing at a time. But I saw this post and I wanted to reach out because 
there may be a connection at some point.

I have a relative named Jose Martins Amaral that was born around 1896. I'm 
not sure when Francisco Martins Gouveia was born but I'm assuming 20-30 
years prior to 1896.
