So I did a restore of some of the files with different checksumms and compared
the restored files with the source files.

restored files:

48a684d8ea6291dc97e76aa327f1df9a /tmp/[...]/vp0014.trn

The md5sums are identical.

Any ideas what I'm missing? I've a second verify job of an other client which
is not showing any differences.

 Hi again,

I still have problems with my IBM TS3310 library, so again ask for your
 help with this.

I use an IBM xSeries host with CentOS 4.3. DDS-5 internal drive (working
perfectly), and IBM TS3310 tape library, with two LTO-3 drives connected
directly (i mean without FC switch) to two QLogic QLA2460 HBA. IBM tape
drivers taken from IBM site. Catalog is created in PostgreSQL 8.1.5.
Bacula 2.0.2. Both pg and bacula compiled from sources.

After btape tests (went 100% OK) I added some suggested options to
device definition, so now it looks like this:

 ...
 Device {
   Name = Dev:TS3310-drv0
   Device Type = tape
   Media Type = LTO-3
   Archive Device = /dev/IBMtape0n
AutomaticMount = yes; # when device opened, read it
   AlwaysOpen = yes;
   RemovableMedia = yes;
   RandomAccess = no;
Block positioning = no; # hint from btape
Hardware End of Medium = No # hint from btape
Fast Forward Space File = No# hint from btape
BSF at EOM = yes# hint from btape
This will only work when you also set Two EOFs at tape end, I think.

I added TWO EOF=yes, but unfortunately, it didn't help. I got:

 18-Jul 13:58 Sd:pl-admbackup01: J:RepositoryFull-ncx.2007-07-18_13.53.20
Error: Unable to position to end of data on device Dev:TS3310-drv0
 (/dev/IBMtape0n): ERR=dev.c:1359 read error on Dev:TS3310-drv0
 (/dev/IBMtape0n). ERR=Input/output error.

Was this with a tape that has been used already? In that case, the
problem is to be expected.

If you wrote to that tape only after the Two EOF were set and the SD
restarted, and then got that problem, I'm running out of ideas...
probably the best thing you can do now is investigating the caching
problem Kern mentioned...

The problem appears when tape is reloaded - SD cannot correctly find end
of tape and it marks volue as Error. In attached file there is a part
of debugged SD log with related elements. The curious case is that it
not always fails! Sometimes one or two reloads works fine, job is
appended to the volume, but after first error all further jobs fail to
 append.

Lately, I tested 2.1.22, hoping for some fixes here, but still have same
problems. I wonder if there is at least a workaround for this, i.e. with
 some additional device options.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Re: [Bacula-users] [Bacula-devel] Bacula always u pgrade differential/incremental to full

2007-07-20 Thread Kern Sibbald
Hello,

I am unable to duplicate this problem, and suspect that there is some
other problem such as confusion between the original backup job name and
the name of the migration Job. Below, you will see that the migration job
is named migrate-job and the job to be migrated is named MigrationJobSave.

All Migrated jobs already have Type='B' so the proposed solution of checking
for 'M' is not correct.

Here is a job listing of a Migration that I just did:

list jobs
+---+--+-+--+---+--+-+---+
| JobId | Name | StartTime | Type | Level | JobFiles |
JobBytes| JobStatus |
+---+--+-+--+---+--+-+---+
| 1 | MigrationJobSave | 2007-07-20 10:40:46 | M| F |7,336 |
133,686,677 | T |
| 5 | MigrationJobSave | 2007-07-20 10:40:46 | B| F |7,336 |
134,833,665 | T |
| 2 | MigrationJobSave | 2007-07-20 10:40:49 | M| F |7,336 |
133,686,677 | T |
| 6 | MigrationJobSave | 2007-07-20 10:40:49 | B| F |7,336 |
134,833,665 | T |
| 4 | migrate-job | 2007-07-20 10:41:01 | g| F |0 |
   0 | T |
| 3 | migrate-job | 2007-07-20 10:41:04 | g| F |0 |
   0 | T |
| 7 | MigrationJobSave | 2007-07-20 10:41:11 | B| I |0 |
   0 | T |
+---+--+-+--+---+--+-+---+

In the above, I ran two full backups (JobId=1,2) Then a migration job
(JobId=3,4) which
produced the Migrated output JobId=6. Note, jobids=1,2 were both marked as
migrated,
type='M' and the resulting migrated job JobId=6 is marked with type='B' as they
should.

And finally, I ran an Incremental backup, which since
I had not modified any files backed up nothing. If it had been upgraded, it
would have
backed up everything.

If you still think there is a problem, at a *minimum*, I'll need a job listing
equivalent to
the above plus the bacula-dir.conf file so I can see the parameters that were
set
for migration.

Best regards,

Kern

As I am no bacula or SQL expert, have I understood the statement
  correctly?

I think so, but I'm not a migration expert :-)

If so how does it get fixed on bacula?

Should be a rather simple change somewhere in cats/sql_find.c and / or
the files where the function db_find_job_start_time() is used. Perhaps.

 Arno

  Thank you.

Re: [Bacula-users] why does my verify job show errors?

2007-07-20 Thread user100
Hi Ralf,

I can just tell you that I have nearly the same problem on one AIX4
server since I have upgraded to 2.0.3 from 1.38.x (verify is ok on all
linux and windows-servers here). But my errormessage is: 'SHA1 digest
differs' or 'MD5 digest differs' (I tried both). I restored such a file
and made a diff but the file does not really differ.

Greetings,
User100

Not sure what is happening, but it might be useful to turn on sql query

[Bacula-users] Solved: [Fwd: Bacula GDB traceback of bacula-sd]

2007-07-20 Thread Thomas Kempf
Hi,
as i noted before, i did an upgrade from 1.36.x to 2.1.26. I ran both
database upgrade scripts to bring the databse from version 8 to 10
before i started the new binaries. But when i looked in the media-table
i found a text-field named mediatype which contained the string LTO2
(beeing defined in my bacula-sd.conf) and an int4 field mediatypeid
which contained the value 0 in all rows, allthough the table mediatype
contains one row with the corresponding name LTO2 and mediatypeid 1.
Changing all rows in table media and setting the mediatypeid to 1 made
the kaboom vanish.
I still can't connect to the storage-daemon (I'll have to doublecheck
the configuration files), but at least the SIGSEV is gone.
I checked the docs before, but have not found any mention of this
problem, but perhaps now the update_db scripts could be adapted.
Best regards
Tom

what else could be wrong? A VolumeToCatalog verify job compares the

[Bacula-users] Max Wait Time Query

2007-07-20 Thread Stephan Heine [ Genetic Interactive ]
Hi to all,

Running Bacula 1.39

I have a schedule of jobs executing sequentially one after another based
on priority where
My Catalog Job has the lowest Priority and is executed last.

I have a situation where I added the Max Wait Time configuration
directive to all my jobs to
specifically get around the entire backup halting if the Volume for one
Job has a status of
anything other than Appendable, which sometimes happens when we've
been messing
With Volume Status Parameters such as after a weekend with a power
outages where we
have to manually re-run backup jobs.

Subsequent to including this directive I now have one host which fails
on every single Job
With a status of Cancelled and the reason isn't reported in either the
e-mail sent to me
or in the Logfile.

Is this the right way of accomplishing what I set out to do or are there
better ways to ensure
that the entire backup schedule still completes even though one or more
jobs may fail while
they don't have an Appendable Volume to write to ?

Yours sincerely

Re: [Bacula-users] Solved: [Fwd: Bacula GDB traceback of bacula-sd]

2007-07-20 Thread Thomas Kempf
SHAME ON ME for creating that noise!
Just after i sent my last mail regarding the database updates, the
bacula-sd had another SIGSEV. At that point i decided to check the docs
again and found the real problem. The Autochanger Resource which was
introduced in the 1.38.x release and which i did not have in my
conf-file. I changed the bacula-sd.conf and bacula now seems to run fine
again. Once again sorry!
But it would have been very helpful if the sd would have cursed a little
at me while parsing the conf-file instead of just doing a kaboom when
connecting to a obsolete resource definition. And i don't know for what
it's good, but the mentioned inconsistency in the database could be
changed too.
Best regards
Tom

I had some problems in setting up the verify jobs. But I thought that
the config is ok now. Maybe I'm still missing something, but if the
right jobid is choosen for comparison and the checksums are different,
what else could be wrong? A VolumeToCatalog verify job compares the
checksums on tape to the checksums in the catalog.

I found the problem (after opening a bug). The client with the
different checksums is an i386 machine, the one without differnt
checksums is amd64 like the bacula-dir. As test I compiled bacula-fd
on my desktop machine (i386) and got no errors. Next I checked the
bacula-fd version on the first i386 machine. It was 1.38.5. After
installing 2.0.3 on this machine I get no different checksums anymore.

So backing up a 1.38.5 client with an 2.0.3 dir works, but the
checksums are different.

Hello,

Please always 'reply to all' so that the mailing list also gets a copy
of your responses.

In this case, the version you use is indeed the problem. None of the
currently released (stable) versions works with Vista. The fixes to make
the FD Vista compatible are only in the beta (2.1) branch for now until
2.2 is released.

Indeed, please consider testing a backup and restore on the Beta version --
it would be a great service to everyone. Many do not have Windows Vista
available for such a test.

I'd say the entire storage is fried.

A fsck ran without any errors. And I can't see anything wrong with my

This could be because the file changed its size during backup. While
this can be a problem in many cases, it doesn't have to be one.

If this bothers you, you'll need to use some sort of snapshot or disable
the service that's using this file during backup.

This is probably more of a problem. I think Bacula tries to restore the
hard link only, but the original file does not exist. This can happen if
you selectively restore, and in your selection are only file entries
detected as hard links by bacula, but the file data itself is not
restored and does no longer exist on disk. In my opinion, Bacula should
restore the complete file... I'm not sure if an upgrade to a more
current (beta) version fixes this, but I'm not even sure this is the
problem :-)

This is probably a corrupted volume file.

Check the size of the volume file, and try bls to see it's contents.

The reason why it's corrupt is not easily determined. You might try
looking throuh your logs to see if there were problems with this volume
earlier...

If you really need that data resored, you can try using bextract to get
the volume contents back, but I don't think that's very promising.

Do other restores run without problems?

Also, try checking (a selection of) your volume files with bls or
bextract to see if you've got really serious problems.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much if one volume is damaged - there
are many possible reasons outside of Bacula for such a case, but if
you've got this issue with a large number of files I would investigate.

First make sure your OS and file systems don't have problems -
sometimes, a file system check reveals more problems than you expect :-)

[Bacula-users] Restore to local server

2007-07-20 Thread Efren Bravo
Hi,

I've installed Bacula over freeBSD6.1 server and the clients are windows XP.

I've been trying to restore some files that were saved from e:\Documents.
It worked ok sending the files to their remote path but didn't work using
the path /tmp/bacula-restores neither the path /tmp/bacula-restores/e as the
manual says since the files were saved from the drive e:\.

The path /tmp/bacula-restores applies locally on the Bacula-Server or is it
on the remote PC?
If was remote, how do I restore the files locally on the server, supposing
the remote PC doesn't exist?

Thank in advance...

A followup: Windows Time Sync appears to use NTP, or if not, at least
something on my host that is running is able to be the source for a
Windows Time Sync. It must be NTP, as I can't imagine it's SMB.

Windows can use ntp, but it's different than other OSes: First,
setting it up to use your own, local time servers is not as simple as
it should be. There are some articles in MS' knowledgebase.

In my last message I mentioned a link to a description of how to configure NTP
server on Windows. For a person like me who knows next to nothing about Windows
it is rather scary to configure this beast by editing the registry. I did some
further search and found this excellent paper:
tf.nist.gov/service/pdf/win2000xp.pdf which descibes an easy way to configure
the use of NTP servers.

Then, it only syncs time from time to time, it doesn't follow the time
server to learn about clock drift. The result is, as far as I know,
 clock steps can happen.

On XP it is once a week, on W2K once every 8 hours. You can properly change it
by editing the registry, but I dare not.

[Bacula-users] Problems authenticating with FD on remote machine

2007-07-20 Thread Philip Clifton

No ideas here?

First, a little background about our setup: We're running multiple virtual
machines, and the intended method for our backups is to store backup data from
each virtual machine on the host machine. Basically, we're using Bacula to
prevent against inadvertant deletions of data, rather than against catastrophe.

As such, I have the full Bacula package installed on the host machine, and
instances of the file director on each virtual machine. All machines are
running Ubuntu of various versions, 7.04 on the host machine and 6.xx on the
virtual machines (they vary). Bacula version is 1.38.11.

What's really baffling to me is that I had this setup working fine previously, until we
moved up to a beefier host machine. The virtual machines were all copied to the new host
whole, and so the only new part of the install was on the host machine. Even
there, I copied my old config files whole cloth, figuring I'd be able to replicate the
old setup.

Anyway, when I try to contact the FD on any remote machine, I get an auth error
along the lines of:

16-Jul 16:38 vhost1-dir: *Console*.2007-07-16_16.28.22 Fatal error: Unable to
authenticate with File daemon. Possible causes:
Passwords or names not the same or
Maximum Concurrent Jobs exceeded on the FD or
FD networking messed up (restart daemon).
Please see http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/faq.html#AuthorizationErrors for
help.

Notably, I have no problems contacting the FD on the host machine.

I've checked that FAQ reference and double/triple/quadruple-checked my config
files to be sure that names and passwords were the same all around, as well as
concurrent jobs. I've verified networking my using Telnet to check the
pertinent ports on the remote machine. I've tried substituting the actual IPs
of virtual machines in place of addresses.

Any other ideas about my problems here? I''ll continue here with some excertps
from the config files. Since my bacula-dir.conf is really long and repetetive,
what with seven virtual machines, I'll abridge it to reflect only references to
one machine.

for sdlt tapes the barcode must be code 39 without checksum,
there are several free barcode-fonts available that can be used e.g.

Or use the program 'barcode' which should be available for many

In the above, I ran two full backups (JobId=1,2) Then a migration job
(JobId=3,4) which
produced the Migrated output JobId=6. Note, jobids=1,2 were both marked
as migrated,
type='M' and the resulting migrated job JobId=6 is marked with type='B' as
they should.

And finally, I ran an Incremental backup, which since
I had not modified any files backed up nothing. If it had been upgraded,
it would have
  backed up everything.

If you still think there is a problem, at a *minimum*, I'll need a job
listing equivalent to
the above plus the bacula-dir.conf file so I can see the parameters that
were set
  for migration.

[Bacula-users] rescue cd and usb keyboard and mouse

2007-07-20 Thread Raymond Luong
Ok

I'm sure someone knows the answer to this. I don't. I'm trying to create a
rescue cd on a fedora core 6 using bacula-2.0.3 to create the
bacula-static-fd file and bacula-rescue-.2.0.0 to create the iso

I follow the instruction stated in the manual and everything looks fine. The
iso got created.

I burned and use it to boot the pc. It would boot to a login screen with a
blinking curse but I can not type. It seem the rescue cd does not have usb
drive load for the usb keyboard. It would work if I boot a pc with ps2
keyboard.

Help?

[Bacula-users] Informix ontape restores via FIFO?

2007-07-20 Thread Christopher Manly
Hi all,

Is anyone out there backing up Informix databases with Bacula? If so,
have you tried combining ontape and FIFOs to do it? Are you going
something else?

I'm running into some issues on restores when I restore directly from
Bacula that I don't get when I restore onto a file on disk and then feed
the data into the FIFO with dd. I'm curious if anyone else has tilted
at this particular windmill.

Thanks!

[Bacula-users] Bacula BETA 2.1.28 released

2007-07-20 Thread Kern Sibbald
Hello,

I have just released the source code and the Win32 binaries to the bacula-beta
area of Source Forge. I recommend that all users running 2.1.26 and using
the Scratch pool upgrade, because it should eliminate certain spurious SQL
error messages.

The main changes, some of which are important since the last beta are:

- Several bug fixes #842, 893, and some unreported bugs.
- Storage overrides delete all previous storage definitions instead
  of prepending.
- One should be able to mount and unmount removable devices if the
Device resource has Removeable Media set and the mount and unmount
  directives are defined.
- ./configure will do a better job of searching for qwt libraries.
- The Win32 version can no longer be shutdown from the tray monitor.
Use the command line or the Services panne.
- Make Mac OS X compile work.

Best regards,

Kern

PS: I saw an email asking on which platforms is bat supported.
Answer: on all platforms where you have Qt4 libraries and the qwt libraries
loaded.

Alternatively, for the qwt libraries, you can download the latest
depkgs-11Jul07 release and build them yourself.

By now I don't know if the rescue-cd process executes an mkinitrd, if
the answer is yes, try to add

--preload=usbcore --preload=usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd

in the line where mkinitrd is called.

Hi,

One example is srv-erh01, the one I've got the select statement from,
however the same error occurs on:

srv-gisanet

spock

BTW I think I've found something interesting: There is a migration job
running right now. I've noticed that the select statement works
perfectly for srv-gisanet because it hasn't been migrated yet. By
executing the slighlty changed statement:

SELECT * FROM Job WHERE JobStatus='T' AND Type='B' AND Level='F' AND
Name='srv-gisanet' AND ClientId=36 AND FileSetId=21 ORDER BY StartTime DESC;

I get only:

But if I run a select for all reccords of srv-gisanet I get the
following (only the interesting part):

   1184362380 | 5556 |533459016 | 0 | 0 |
18 |21 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

The thing I've noticed is that the line of the job 9646 (with Type=M)
contains the same FileSetId of the job 9721 (with Type=B) and, as I
said, job 9721 hasn't been migrated yet. However there is this job 9658
(that is the New backup JobId according to the migration log bellow) has
Type=B but the FileSetId is different. For migration jobs I use a
placebo Fileset named Arquivos as I have only one migration job
defined. Have I messed up something here?

Thank you.

[Bacula-users] 20GB on DVD

2007-07-20 Thread lucio
Hello *,

I need to configure Bacula 2.0.3 so that it makes full backups of 20GB of
data onto 4.7GB DVDs... that boils down to the following questions:
Is it possible to make Bacula span the full backup over different DVD media?
Is it possible to achieve that with only one DVD writer?
Is it possible to make Bacula send the operator an email asking to change
DVD media in order to continue/finish the full backup?

Thanks in advance,
Lucio.

[Bacula-users] manually mounting continuation tapes

2007-07-20 Thread Craig White
I think this is the last little niggling detail on my bacula setup.

I do a 'Full' backup on Friday's and differential backup on
Mon-Tues-Wed-Thurs.

A 'Full' backup requires 1 whole tape + part of a second backup tape. No
big deal except that I must manually mount the second tape.

from today's log...

20-Jul 11:00 SRV1: Start Backup JobId 136,
Job=SRV1Backup.2007-07-20_11.00.00
20-Jul 11:00 SRV1: ua_purge.c:611 All records pruned from Volume
1_Friday_Week_2; marking it Purged
20-Jul 11:00 SRV1: ua_purge.c:611 All records pruned from Volume
2_Friday_Week_2; marking it Purged
20-Jul 11:00 SRV1: Recycled volume 1_Friday_Week_2
20-Jul 11:00 SRV1: Recycled volume 1_Friday_Week_2 on device
DDS-4 (/dev/nst0), all previous data lost.
20-Jul 13:08 SRV1: End of Volume 1_Friday_Week_2 at 25:7055 on device
DDS-4 (/dev/nst0). Write of 64512 bytes got -1.
20-Jul 13:08 SRV1: Re-read of last block succeeded.
20-Jul 13:08 SRV1: End of medium on Volume 1_Friday_Week_2
Bytes=25,453,596,672 Blocks=394,555 at 20-Jul-2007 13:08.
20-Jul 13:08 SRV1: Recycled volume 2_Friday_Week_2
20-Jul 13:08 SRV1: Please mount Volume 2_Friday_Week_2 on Storage
Device DDS-4 (/dev/nst0) for Job SRV1Backup.2007-07-20_11.00.00
20-Jul 13:32 SRV1: Recycled volume 2_Friday_Week_2 on device
DDS-4 (/dev/nst0), all previous data lost.
20-Jul 13:32 SRV1: New volume 2_Friday_Week_2 mounted on device

20-Jul 13:57 SRV1: Job write elapsed time = 02:33:29, Transfer rate =
3.301 M bytes/second

So it automatically 'purges' both 1_Friday_Week_2 and 2_Friday_Week_2
when it starts up and finds 'expired' tape 1_Friday_Week_2 already in
the drive and begins backing up. Then the tape fills and it sends me an
e-mail asking for 2_Friday_Week_2. I have to manually eject
1_Friday_Week_2 and insert 2_Friday_Week_2 but it won't begin using
2_Friday_Week_2 until I open bconsole and issue a 'mount' command. This
is unfriendly for those times when other people have to insert the 2nd
tape on a Friday.

my 'sd' configuration...

Device {
  Name = DDS-4#
  Media Type = DDS-4
  Archive Device = /dev/nst0
AutomaticMount = yes; # when device opened, read it
  AlwaysOpen = no;
  RemovableMedia = yes;
  RandomAccess = no;
}

my pool definition for 'Fridays'
Pool {
  Name = WeeklyPool
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 19d
  Volume Use Duration = 4d
  Maximum Volume Jobs = 5

[Bacula-users] An idea for dynamic config files

2007-07-20 Thread Joshua J. Kugler
After not using Bacula for quite a while (a little over a year) due to leaving
the job in which I was using it, I'm finally getting it up and running at my
new place of work.

I know the discussion happens every now and then, but I was looking for a
while to dynamically include sections in bacula-dir.conf. The docs say that
@ can be used anywhere, but that's only for including files. What I'm
looking for is including directories. The bar | is used to execute scripts,
but right now it only seems to support being used in file lists (at least
according to the docs). How hard would it be to have it support being used
anywhere in the config file? Then I could do something like this at the end
of my bacula-dir.conf:

| sh -c cat /etc/bacula/clients.d/*.conf

Guess I'll have to take a look at the source.

Yes to all of those questions. Just follow the instructions in the
manual and ask questions here if you have any problems.

Re: [Bacula-users] Restore to local server

When it prompts to either yes/no/mod the restore, you can change the
default client to perform the restore to. By default, it's the client
machine the backup was taken from.
