Re: [Bes-admins] Droid X

2010-07-22 Thread Chris Burwell
The factory support for exchange is getting better on Android phones
(as has been the case with the iPhone as well).

HTC devices that run sense have better exchange functionality. Some of
the things that are missing from the stock Exchange-Android support is
the abbility to add a signature to your emails or accept a meeting
invite from the email. HTC sense addresses these issues, but it should
also be noted that Android 2.2 (Froyo) is also addressing these
issues.

I gave up the BB for Android and I use Touchdown for my Exchange messages. It
does support exchange security policies and the app itself does a pretty good
job of syncing and giving a lot of functionality. The app also has a remote
kill command. Basically on the device you come up with a kill code, should
your device go missing, send yourself an email with TDKill and  your kill
code in the subject and the app clears itself so that's always an option. We
are also running Exchange 2007, there is a built in tool to manage mobile
 devices and do remote wipes.

 Just a thought.

I am starting to get pressure from some top level managers to support these.
Coincidentally, they were the same managers who 2 years ago drove the
decision to switch from Palm Treos to BB.  Of course, when they drove the BB
decision, they had no idea about the task of deploying BES, they just think a
phone is a phone from an IT perspective.  In the two years since I have
deployed BES and taught myself how to use it, I think it is one of the best
decisions they made for me.  No more running to desks to fix one phone at a
 time.

My personal phone is the HTC Evo.  I love the phone.  But I don't want to
support individual phones again.  I just don't have the resources, and don't
want to take a step backwards in efficiency.

Whether you have faced the issue with iPhones or Android, I am looking for
suggestions on how you resisted management pressure to support these
 non-enterprise phones.

Re: [Bes-admins] iPhones overheating while connecting to an Exchange server

2010-06-23 Thread Chris Burwell
Can you change the sync interval on the iPhone from as mail arrives to
some interval to see if that will solve the problem? This will at least tell
you if the issue is the realtime push.

We have the same exchange environment and our two iPhones do not experience
this problem. They are only 3G models.

The weird thing is--if I delete their account that connects to our Exchange
server (via our Exchange 2003 SP2 front-end / OWA server) the iPhones cool
right down and the battery lasts all day.. Its almost as if the constant
sync'ing with Exchange is causing them to heat up and drain the battery.

Anyone seen this or have any ideas?

The migration kit is just another SRP-ID (Since you cannot have two
servers connected to the Blackberry network with the same SRP-ID).

In my case, RIM issued me a new SRP-ID and said that in 90 days the
SRP-ID that my current/old BES was using would become inactivte.

The migration kit is generally used to make transitioning to a new BES
server easier.

Re: [Bes-admins] Not all Outlook contacts are sync'ing

2009-12-07 Thread Chris Burwell
I ran into an issue with this using BES + Domino. One person had a
large amount of contacts and the contact sync would fail at a certain
point. I narrowed it down to a corrupt contact. I ended up having to
go through exporting the contacts, deleting incomplete ones and then
re-importing the new list (all in Lotus Notes).

This was a few years back, so I would recommend trying newer/faster fixes first!

Re: [Bes-admins] Delete POP email account from BES

2009-12-04 Thread Chris Burwell
I can confirm this, as when I re-activate my device the servicebook
for my old @att.blackberry.net email comes down even though that
account is no longer setup through BIS on my device. Deleting the
service book works for me.

I wonder if there is a way to remove this service book from BES so it
will not come down each time I reactivate?

Re: [Bes-admins] Block Personal Email

I found to fully block BIS accounts you have to configure service
exclusivity as well as configuring the firewall policy to block incoming
BIS messages. I learned this after discovering that some users were still
able to get BIS accounts to function even with only Service Exclusivity
configure.

accounts on their device via the email setup page. I have found in the IT
policy how to block access in the initial setup. The problem I am facing is
how can I block the users that already have these accounts setup on their
phone. Is it possible to block non corporate service books???

The problem we are having is when a user leaves and we reissue their
device, the new users is getting the prior users personal email. We want to
prevent this all together. Does any have any ideas?? I have not been to
successful on finding the answers in the forums.

[Bes-admins] Block BlackBerry Device Email Address

2009-10-06 Thread Chris Burwell
I am trying to block email sent to what the BIS site calls the
BlackBerry Device Email Address. The one where you can create an
email address in the format of usern...@carrier.blackberry.net,
where carrier is ATT, etc.

In our IT policy I have set message exclusivity and set the device
firewall to block in comming BIS messages, but I am still able to
recieve messages sent to the BlackBerry Device Email Address.

Is there an option I am missing somehwere in the IT policy? I assumed
that these emails would be considered BIS emails, but apparently they
are not.

Re: [Bes-admins] Block BlackBerry Device Email Address

2009-10-06 Thread Chris Burwell
On a hunch, I tired sending an email from my Gmail account (using the
web) to my @att.blackberry.net address, and those emails are blocked.

I guess if I send an email from my work email account to my device,
BES somehow sees that the message is coming from someone on the BES
and allows it through. That's my best guess.

Anyway, this accomplishes what I need for the time being.

I am running a BES 4.6 server MSDE in a VMware environment with about 900
users. We are in the process of getting this database migrated to SQL 2005
within the next few weeks. I saw Blackberry's webcast today on migration
options, and I was wondering if anyone can provide feedback on the bet
option for my setup. Has anyone done the in place upgrade? Do you recommend
it? Also has anyone implement high availability? Can you share your
experiences. I am thinking the parallel migration sounds like the safest and
cleanest option if I can get a new SRP ordered.

Re: [Bes-admins] Finding out who your BES server is talking to

2009-08-20 Thread Chris Burwell
Check with your network team to see if there is any sort of QOS or
bandwidth limiting going on. Sometimes this can cause latency if
traffic from your mail servers is being de-prioritized or choked in
some way.

I think it queries active directory to find the exchange servers and dns has
records of the services and it chooses the one with the lowest weight to it
 from there.

Where can I find the tail agent logs?

Also, perhaps a dumb question but – how does a BES server know which
exchange server(s) to talk to? I don’t recall seeing where to set this up.
We recently (1 year ago) migrated from Exchange 2003 to 2007, we still have
our 2003 servers active and running but aren’t hosting any mailboxes or
routing mail. In our 2007 environment currently we have an NLB for our CAS
servers and have the MBs set up in an active/passive mode.

It is talking to MB servers to get the messages. Both servers are being
“worked” at the same time via UDP notifications to the agent. If UDP does
not work, then “long” store scans are performed. This would cause major
delays - up to 15 minutes or so.

The easiest way to see what’s going on would be to tail agent logs (for both
agents). Those would also contain the queue size and queue status.

That was my initial thought process, doesn't DM overwrite (or amend) to
the Outlook\Contacts folders?  Meaning all his personal stuff will wind
 up on the Corporate BES?

Why don't you use DM to sync wired and BIS emails? As far as google sync
I have found it buggy at best.

Re: [Bes-admins] Blackberry Enterprise Server monitoring

2009-05-05 Thread Chris Burwell
If you just want to monitor the hardware, then you probably don't need to
worry about the Blackberry services running on top. Most commercial
monitoring solutions I have run across have provisions for Windows 2003
server built in. That means you configure the SNMP service on your BES (with
the proper community names) and point your netMon server to the BES and tell
the netMon that it is a 2003 server. After that you should have basic CPU,
Memory, and hard drive monitoring.

I added the person to the BES and a minute later received another
notification stating that the user had been activated! After checking the
server, the status for this user is Running, there is a PIN, and the last
contact date is some time in 2007. This same situation has happened on a few
users that I have migrated. It seems that if I remove the user, then add
them again the same scenario will not occur again.

The company I work for had Nextel Blackberries several years back, but I
wouldn't think that after 2-3 years that information would still be present
on the blackberry network (let alone automatically activate a device).

 Any thoughts?
