[Bes-admins] BlackBerry IT Policy

2009-12-07 Thread Nguyen, Dzung T
Hi all,
Just want to get a feel for how restrictive is everyone BlackBerry IT Policy?

Our current controls:
1) Dissallow Third Party Application Download
2) BlackBerry Device Password ( Min. 6 character + numeric + alpha)
3) Disable USB Mass Storage Mode

With the new BlackBerry AppWorld, is anyone opening their policy to allow users
to install applications?

Re: [Bes-admins] BlackBerry IT Policy

2009-12-07 Thread Todd R. Martin
Why would you want to restrict people from having the goodness of the appworld?
The only thing I force on BB’s is a signature from our company. Else they have
free reign of whatever they want to do. Unless you work for the gov. or don’t
own your own BB, I would expect many others to be like this also.

2009-12-07 Thread Gargano, Steve
We disallow third party apps (if we allow them, then we would have to support
them which became a mess)
we require a password after 20 minutes. has to be at least 4 characters
we disable mass storage because we don't even allow thumb drives in our system

Re: [Bes-admins] BlackBerry IT Policy

2009-12-07 Thread Dan
Good question! I've been meaning to post this on here for a while.

My company has around 100 users on BES and we don't restrict anything,
although most of our users don't know how to install an app, so we aren't
too worried about them messing something up. However, I have had a few users
"Error: 507" their devices before.

Re: [Bes-admins] BlackBerry IT Policy

2009-12-07 Thread Nguyen, Dzung T
We don't allow personal BB on the enterprise.
If you don't control user's ability to install 3rd party applications, a user
could upload their business contacts and calendars to FaceBook or other social
networking site?

Are there any known security vulnerabilies with BlackBerry device that can be
installed with a 3rd Party Application?

Re: [Bes-admins] BlackBerry IT Policy

2009-12-07 Thread Chris Burwell
We view it as a coporate owned device (which all of our Blackberries are).
We do not let anyone install software on their computers, so we extend the
same policy to our mobile devices.

Our policy is just as restrictive as Dzung's, plus we block BIS. Everyone
(including myself) has all the tools they need to perform their job using
this policy.

The only complaint I have heard is "Why don't we have iPhones"! :)

Re: [Bes-admins] BlackBerry IT Policy

2009-12-07 Thread Jonathan Barker
“How come my previous messages are disappearing?” - because you’ve installed
every app you can find leaving no memory for Messages.
“How come I only have half a day of battery and it runs slow?” – because you
have a bunch of apps running in the background constantly.
“How come some of my unrelated to work applications aren’t working right?” --
[bangs phone against the desk a few times then hangs up.]

We tried application restrictions but it was removing apps that were Allowed
each time we added an app to the Allowed list. May try this again when we move
to BES 5.

My biggest gripe with iPhones/Windows Mobile phones is that we cannot secure

Re: [Bes-admins] BlackBerry IT Policy

2009-12-07 Thread John
I control the IT policy and BES so I allow most everything on the BB’s. The
only people that have them anymore are the exec’s and only 2 of them come to me
and ask for help and that’s just long enough to setup a new one they purchased,
after that I rarely hear from them except asking about the latest AT&T BB’s
because I always have it.

All of our BBs are company owned, however, our IT Policy is not very
restrictive. We allow 3rd party apps. If I put in a lengthy password
requirement, I would never hear the end of it! We use AutoLock for the
standard keyboard lock. We don't disable USB Mass Storage mode because some
folks like to have some photos or music on their SD card.

All of our machines run a program called USBVirusScan, which automatically
starts an antivirus scan anytime anything is plugged into a USB port.
