Here's a small but confusing bug: I'm setting up LMS 7.9.2 on a new Windows server. When I configure plugins for the first time, I uncheck quite a few, and I add a couple of 3rd party plugins (BlankSaver and What Was That Tune). When I click 'Apply' and choose not to restart the server, the refreshed 'Active plugins' list fails to display the 3rd party plugins that were selected. And they no longer appear in the '3rd Party plugins' list. [SlimDevices: Beta] Instability in Windows build
For the last couple of years I've been mostly using only the compiled Windows EXE build. I update the server to a beta build exactly once a month, on the 1st, on two different servers running Windows 2008 R2 Standard. Today I found the server unresponsive, and on examining Windows services found it in the 'stopping' state. Unable to get it stopped, I was forced to reboot the server. This has happened one time before on the same server, and one time on the second server. Below is the end of the most recent server log. It may have something to do with new/change scans, which I have scheduled to run each night via the 'Rescan Music Library' plugin, or maybe not. If you go to Settings > My Music > Browse Artists, you now have the option of seeing two artist lists - "All Artists" and "Album Artists". When you enable the two lists (it may have been enabled by default), then "All Artists" should include track artists from compilations, as well as guest artists. Browsing "Album Artists" should exclude them. In the old server, the way you had Artists configured probably corresponded more closely with album artists. You can either flip that option to the other setting (one list), or else go have a look at Album Artists and you'll likely see a similar count. I'm not sure how (or if) that affects the behavior of playlists, though. That could be something else altogether. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Track artists for compilations not shown in web interface current playlist
So, is this behavior intentional for some odd reason? Why should the type of album or the fact that there's an album artist in the tagging of a compilation affect how the individual tracks are shown in the playlist? If I have a non-compilation with album artist and track artist, then both of them are listed for individual tracks in the current playlist. And fwiw: Squeezeplay lists them correctly, showing both the album artist and track artists, in that order. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.9 Problems/Bugs
If you were to use this, obviously you'd schedule it when there's nothing going on. For example, if you do a nightly rescan at 5AM (using the Rescan Music Library plugin), schedule the server to restart at 4:50AM. It's something of a last resort, in any case. I would think that one of the few things that would cause LMS to become unresponsive after several days of use might be if memory usage got out of control. That can sometimes happen with misbehaved 3rd party plugins. Getting rid of the bad plugin would be the best course of action, but a periodic restart might help. You can get rid of far more than just non-default plugins. Most or all of the default plugins are unnecessary. I don't even remember which ones are enabled by default any more. One that's really good to get rid of is UPnP/DLNA, unless you actually need LMS to function as a UPnP server. Go down the list, read the descriptions, decide which ones you absolutely can't live without, get rid of everything else. Try that first, but if this is something that mysteriously happens after LMS has been running for a couple of days, you could also try restarting LMS nightly. Create a small batch file on your server and use the Windows task scheduler to run it in the middle of the night. Code: @echo off setlocal net start | find /i "Logitech Media Server">nul if not ERRORLEVEL 1 net stop "Logitech Media Server" net start "Logitech Media Server" JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101516 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

Michael, are there some performance issues with the SVN server? I only do SVN updates occasionally now - maybe every week or two at most, but I've noticed this for the last couple of months. When I attempt to do updates, the server will time out the first couple of attempts, then it works fine. Like it's waking up. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.9 Problems/Bugs
Not sure if this has anything to do with your problem, but I've noticed that if you update anything in the plugins, such as enabling or disabling them, and immediately restart the server, the changes often aren't saved. I believe the reason for this is that LMS only periodically saves internal settings to disk. I was looking at an old thread containing posts of mine and noticed that one of my posts was missing the image that was posted. I don't recall if it was an attachment or an external reference. Small request. When you enter Random Albums in the SqueezePlay interface, since the list is new every time, it should take you to the top of the list each time. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] COMMENT field in 'advanced searching' - only searches in 'description'?
Seems to me that LMS would be better served to scan both COMMENT and DESCRIPTION and create multiple (or combined comments). The database is set up so that it could easily handle a one:many relationship, allowing more than one comment per track. The spec states that you can have multiple tagging fields of the same name (and it works with some fields, such as ARTIST). I've never tried to see what happens if you have more than one COMMENT field, but the expected behavior would be that you'd end up with two comments. So that should also be the behavior (IMO) if another field that is mapped to the same internal field is present. Kind of an ironic in light of the behavior of 'bug 18126' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=18126). Maybe when that bug is fixed, this problem could be tackled at the same time. I don't use the Android app very much, so just noticed this a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure when it stopped working, but it might have been when my phone updated itself to Lollipop. The app launches and I see a screen with my Transporter player and below that "Home". I see a "Connecting" spinny that stays up for 10 or 15 seconds. When it clears, there's nothing on the Home menu screen. If I hit the 'notes' button, I get a volume control, but it doesn't work. There are no menus ever displayed, no playlist or Now Playing info. Is there any way to embed a link to 'All Albums' in the genre list itself, so that the user can skip the Genre > Artist hierarchy? Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LMS 7.9 - Various Artists not listed under genres
I don't recall at the moment the exact reason that lead me to change, but I've retagged all of my VA compilations with an explicit ALBUMARTIST of "Various Artists". And I can, indeed, see this "Various Artists" listed under genres. I also add an ALBUMARTISTSORT field to these files with the value of "000" (three zeroes), which causes this artist to sort to the top of any artist list, and albums, when sorted by ARTIST/YEAR/ALBUM show the VA compilations at the beginning. Still, I don't see any reason why the -pseudo-artist- Various Artists shouldn't be included among a genre's artists. [SlimDevices: Beta] Sorting of songs in search results
In the web UI, when I do a quick search and then view all of the songs found, they appear to be sorted by ALBUM name. From the advanced search, the results appear to be sorted by SONG/ALBUM. IMO, the most helpful order would be SONG/ARTIST/ALBUM. Just seems to me the most natural and most logical if you're trying to find something in a list of songs. Any chance this could be changed, or would it potentially break something? The first sort order is odd, as it doesn't even group the same song together. For example, when I do a quick search in my library for "birdland", it finds two popular jazz tunes: "Lullaby of Birdland" (a George Shearing song from the 1950s) and "Birdland" (a Joe Zawinul tune first recorded by Weather Report in the 1970s). But the two different songs aren't grouped together. Sorted by album name, the order actually appears random unless you examine it closely. [SlimDevices: Beta] SB Radio - Can this be done from the server?
I realize the Radio firmware is unlikely to be updated, so can a change in this behavior be effected from LMS? This is small, but it drives me crazy: When you clear the Radio playlist remotely (from, say, the web UI or a mobile app), the screen on the Radio updates to the Current Playlist, showing the word "Nothing". It will then eventually fall into the Stopped screensaver (fwiw, I use the digital clock). The next time a user goes to use the Radio and wakes it out of the screensaver, it will show "Current Playlist Nothing" and you have to hit the Back or Home button to get to the home menu. Ideally, it would wake up in the home menu. Is this possible from LMS? When the playlist is cleared remotely, simply update to the home menu without displaying the Current Playlist screen. Oddly enough (I just tested this) when the current playlist is cleared at the Radio itself, that's exactly what it does. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Web interface annoyance: middle divider does not preserve column ratio
Yes, something should be done in the scripting to make sure that resizing the window doesn't completely hide the left-hand pane. Or to make sure that the divider always remains visible, so that the left-hand side can be expanded. To tell you the truth, though, I've never encountered the problem. What I do, and perhaps this could be a workaround for you, is to always keep the right-hand side at its minimum width (without completely hiding it, which is now possible in 7.9). When I'm browsing through the library, I want as much screen real estate as I can get on the left size so that I can see as many covers in a row as possible. The current playlist on the right will text wrap just fine, so I see no reason to make it any wider than the minimum. And the only reason that it can't be made smaller is to keep from hiding the controls in the Now Playing section at the top. Just an FYI, but you can disable the full text search by disabling the full text search plugin. Then the search behavior reverts back to what it was previously and library scanning is quicker. Personally, I haven't found a compelling reason to use full text searching and prefer the old substring search, which returns fewer and better focused results. Don't buy compilations. They suck :-). You asked the following question in Bugzilla. As usual, the answer may need some discussion. > Is this a new issue in 7.9? Yes and No. :) In 7.8 it depends on how you have the setting [_] List compilation albums under each artist [x] Group compilation albums together If you set 'List compilation albums under each artist', then the album artist for the compilation does appear under Artists. If you set 'Group compilation albums together', then a contributor who has only compilation albums does not appear in the artist list. But the album(s) can be found under 'Various Artists'. I think we've discussed this a number of times in the past, but this behavior makes no sense to me. What that setting _actually_ does is suppresses track-only artists from the artist list when set to 'Group compilations' (and why I've always thought the wording and description should be changed). If I explicitly give an ALBUMARTIST tag to a compilation, I would expect to be able to browse to that artist no matter what the settings. Whether or not that behavior is changed (er, -fixed-), in 7.9 there is still the bug. When one artist list is used, the behavior is the same as in 7.8, and depends on the group compilation setting. When two artist lists are set, the artist does not appear on the Album Artists list (he does appear under All Artists). There's an option at Settings > My Music > Filter Contributor Roles. I think if you set it to "Show all albums and tracks for an artist" you'll see the first behavior in both instances. The compilation albums should not appear for artists with a TRACKARTIST role when browsing Album Artists with the option set to "Only show tracks or albums matching the selected role for an artist". Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.9 Problems/Bugs
When you move files like this, why don't you just modify your playlists before dealing with any issues of missing playlist references? Relying on LMS' logs to fix your playlists is like chasing your tail. You should be doing it (moving files between drives) in some way that makes editing all of your playlists fairly simple. You may also want to look into storage pooling software, so that you don't have to worry about the physical location of files. Storage pooling software can consolidate drives so they appear to the computer as a single drive or folder. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Compilation Tag causing Artist/Album Artist problems
Damn. I just tested this and it sure is broken. If I set COMPILATION=1 and ALBUMARTIST=Various Artists, it picks up -that- album artist. But no others. Closest bug that I can find on file in the bug database is this one, but it's virtually the opposite of the behavior we're seeing, so it probably doesn't apply in 7.9. http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9523 If you examine any of the albums tagged as described (e.g., in the web interface), it clearly shows the correct album artist. So the bug must be in the code to retrieve the list of album artists. It appears to be suppressing those having compilation albums, except for the one named 'Various Artists'. Again... The only sane solution would be to write a value of 1 into the albums.disc column when there is no discnumber tag -- NOT to do multiple queries of the database just to work around all the corner-cases like this. And that again leaves the display/formatting problem for the rest of us who DO NOT want to see tracks in single CD albums listed like 1-1. Taxman 1-2. Eleanor Rigby 1-3. I'm Only Sleeping 1-4. Love You To 1-5. Here, There and Everywhere 1-6. Yellow Submarine etc. To suppress the disc number in the formatting when albums.disc = albums.discc (disc count), it also requires figuring out the total number of discs in the album. As I said before, I have no problem with doing this, but I don't expect it to happen. LMS has quite a few oddball issues with how it stores data in its database. Many of which affect how it has to work to retrieve that data. For instance: An album is either a compilation or it is not. There is no 'maybe'. Yet in the album.compilation field you'll find 1, 0 and NULL values, which results in such idiotic SQL as WHERE albums.compilation = 0 OR albums.compilation IS NULL That should never have happened, but it's how LMS works, in that if a COMPILATION value of 0 isn't explicitly found in the track tagging, LMS doesn't store it, even though it's correct, and would make life easier and the retrieving of data faster. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.9 summary?
Stability is great, but you know how that works. You can (unluckily) install a nightly that has a bug, maybe even a large one. But it's almost always fixed by the next day, so you just install the next nightly. No reason to update constantly, as it doesn't change that quickly. There are some great improvements to new & changed scanning and (yay!) updated artwork handling. Changed covers are now picked up nicely and you should find that you now have little need to run a full scan. Make sure you take advantage of new 'maximum' memory setting under Settings > Advanced > Performance > Database Memory Config. It gives a nice performance boost, especially when scanning. Full text search may or may not be your cuppa tea. It doesn't particularly fit the way I like to use the basic search, but it may be great for you. But it's a plugin, so it can easily be disabled and when you do, the behavior just goes back to the old basic search behavior. You'll find a bunch of new interface stuff, which is probably the biggest hurdle. I don't recall, but there were one or two example plugins installed previously. You may want/need to disable them after installing. In any event, be sure to look at plugins after installing, to see what's new. Oh, and then there's the single greatest enhancement in the history of Slim Server/Squeezebox Server/Logitech Media Server: *Random Albums*. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] What should be included in 7.9 ?
Gotta be a way to fix it. Somehow. I can't believe there's no way to pull mod time for files in unadjusted UTC. If the Perl libraries are the problem, couldn't you directly use Windows system calls? (Forgive me, I know we've discussed this before. I'm too lazy to look up the conversation.) Michael, the Daylight Savings Time change is coming up once again in the US this Saturday night. Care to take another stab at fixing the Windows bug? Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] --nomysqueezebox: disable all mysb.comintegration in LMS 7.9
I never had the opportunity to test if this really works now, but I'm also wondering how/if this change would affect the behavior? 'Bug 17526 - Push any firmware found in cache/updates to players' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17526) Say mysb.com goes away at some point and LMS is no longer checking for updated firmware. Will it still be possible to manually download and update firmware on all players? Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] What should be included in 7.9 ?
Is there any reason why a blank screensaver, as implemented by the BlankSaver plugin, couldn't be made a standard part of LMS? I know there's the philosophy of allowing/encouraging willing 3rd party developers to contribute and maintain their own plugins, but I can't imagine that a screensaver of this type is either very complicated or requires any real maintenance. IMO, it should have always been a standard screensaver option to help preserve VFD screens on players. IIRC, LMS also uses 8.3 file names when it installs itself as a Windows service. Given that it's possible (and often desirable, for performance reasons) to 'disable 8.3 file names in NTFS partitions on Windows' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/121007), I've wondered how well LMS would run on systems that don't support for it.
